Ppastor’s Ppage: Celebrating His Kids Preschool

are blessed to have them both as our teachers at His Kids.

Our preschool families were fantastic this year as well. Our parents were patient with our procedures and respectful of our protocols. Our students were so good about following all the guidelines, including wearing masks. Thank you, His Kids families, for hanging in there with us. We are so grateful for your willingness to work with us as we navigated our way through all these challenges. You have reminded me that our preschool is not just a service we provide but a ministry we share with you. This past year has been difficult at times, but it has also been a joy to share it with you and your kids.

his time of year we usually have a special Sunday celebrating our preschool. We invite all our preschool families to a worship service.

The kids sing the songs they’ve learned in chapel. We have a big reception with cake and balloons afterwards. Sadly, because of COVID, we aren’t having a “His Kids Sunday” this year. It’s too bad, because in spite of everything – or maybe because of everything – there is much to celebrate this year regarding this wonderful ministry of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.

If we had held a “His Kids Sunday” I would have had more to say than usual this year. I would have said something like this:

Finally, we could not have made it through this year without the help and support of our congregation. There were times during the school year when the math was not in favor of keeping our preschool open.

Reduced class sizes meant reduced tuition income, and the preschool reserve funds only carried things so far. Donations from congregational resources such as our endowment fund as well as from individual congregational members saved the day. There have been times when His Kids was flush with funds and their contributions towards our congregational budget helped carry us through hard financial times. It was a blessing to be able to return the favor. I hope it assured our preschool staff how much we care about them and this ministry we share with them.

We have come through the most challenging year in the 27-year history of His Kids Preschool here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Our preschool staff bravely decided early on that we would offer as much inperson learning for our students as possible, and with the exception of a few missed field trips, we were able to offer our full program with a full year of in-person learning for our students. Pulling this off was a team effort which was nothing less than heroic.

Our director, Sara Harbaugh, deserves a lot of credit for making this school year happen. She did her research and came up with procedures and protocols to keep our students and staff safe, including commissioning her husband Matt to create Plexiglas dividers for the classroom. I know she endured some tears and some sleepless nights as she worried about how the school would remain financially viable with reduced class sizes and increased hours for our teachers so they could do the necessary cleaning between classes. I know she spent more time steering our preschool through these perilous days than is reflected in her job description or her paycheck.

Her passion for this ministry got us through this year. Thank you, Sara.

In addition to essential funding, several individuals stepped forward to help out and keep things humming along. I can’t possibly mention them all, but Rita Cline was particularly helpful in making several sets of matching masks for our students to wear. I hope we never have to ask our students to wear masks again, but the bright colors and fun designs she chose helped offset the dreary prospect of covering those precious faces, and the contribution of her time and talent was greatly appreciated.

I am sad we aren’t having a “His Kids Sunday” this year, but as we come to the end of a challenging school year for our preschool, more than anything else I am filled with gratitude. I am grateful that we make it through the year without any COVID transmission in our preschool. I am grateful that this ministry not only survived, but thrived. I am grateful for the new young friends I made during chapel time, including particularly one of our students who had the delightful habit of strutting into my office after school to chat me up and look at all my pictures and ask questions about my family. I am grateful for Sara, Elva, and Michelle, for their dedication to this ministry and the grit they showed during a difficult year. I am grateful for our preschool families, and for our remarkable, resilient congregation.

Our teachers, Elva McArthur and Michelle Harper, deserve equal accolades. They believed in the importance of in-person earning and came suited up for the job, literally! They spent the entire school year wearing special clear plastic PPE which offered both a shield of protection against virus transmission and the opportunity for our students to see their faces. I had a hard time wearing one for our weekly fifteen-minute chapel services, so I can only imagine what it was like to wear one for several hours a day, all week long! They also cut back on their down time between classes to take on the additional chore of disinfecting their classroom between each class. Throughout it all, they showed the same love and patience to our students as they always do. We

Changes ahead for Sunday morning worship!

Social distancing is practiced.

Every other pew is kept empty to maintain distancing, and those who choose to socialize after worship do so while distancing outdoors in the church parking lot.

ur church council has approved a plan for changes to our worship practices beginning Sunday, May 2. Please note the following:

+ Beginning Sunday, May 2, our 10:30 service will return to the sanctuary. After a full year of drive-in services, we're moving our late service back into our sanctuary! For those who are not yet comfortable coming indoors, this service will continue to be broadcast on FM station 98.7. You may briefly enter the narthex to pick up a bulletin and prefilled communion elements and then return to your vehicle and continue to participate from the parking lot.

The services are shorter, with most lasting less than 45 minutes.

Singing is limited.

Prefilled, sealed communion elements are handed out by masked, gloved volunteers as you arrive, and consumed in your pew.

Windows are kept open during the service to improve air flow.

You might want to bring a sweater or jacket on chilly mornings.

+ Signing up to attend in-person worship will no longer be necessary.

We have developed other ways to ensure we are maintaining distancing and capacity requirements. We will ask you to sign in upon arrival in case we need to conduct contact tracing, but you do not need to register in advance to attend.

We have been worshipping with these procedures in place for ten months at the 8:00 AM service, and it has resulted in zero COVID transmission. These are certainly not ideal circumstances, but as our 8:00 AM worshippers would attest, there is still a powerfully worshipful atmosphere and a sense of community in our gatherings. It is understood that some high-risk OHLC members will continue to worship with us online, but we hope that knowledge of these procedures will help many of our members better discern whether the time is right for you to return to our sanctuary.

+ We will continue to livestream our 8:00 AM service. You can watch the 8 AM service live or on demand on Facebook, or on our YouTube channel later in the day.

We are doing well here in Island County, with consistently low COVID numbers and a commendably high vaccination rate.

We are hopeful that the summer will bring opportunities to resume more normal communion practices and fellowship opportunities.

Adopt-A Highway: Jeff Margraf, OHLC’s coordinator for this State of

There’s still time to join us as we conclude our 5-week study of the letter of James. We will meet May 4 & May 11. This hybrid-style class is conducted in-person in the church library and over Zoom at 7:00 PM on Tuesdays. COVID protocols must be observed by in-person attendees. In-person and online attendees need to register in advance by e-mailing Pastor Spencer at pastor@oakharborlutheran.org. Come explore this oft-neglected and even maligned letter and hear what God has to say to us through Jesus’ brother, a pillar in the early Jewish Christian community.

Washington program, is looking to restart the project with a clean-up event along our 2-mile stretch of Hwy 20 in the next 1-2 months.

While the State hasn’t finalized all program restart details, it’s clear there will be new rules, procedures and paperwork to file for each event. In the meantime, we’d like to start building a larger list of interested members (minimum age 15) for our team. For high school students this is a good opportunity to get 2-3 hours of volunteer time, which can count towards graduation volunteer requirements. Registration is now open for Camp Lutherwood!

We have a wonderful Lutheran Bible camp right in our own back yard, on the shores of beautiful Lake Samish near Bellingham. Camp Lutherwood is open again and currently taking registrations for summer campers! You can register online at www.camplutherwood.org. Through gifted funds from the OHLC Men’s Group (The Brotherhood of St. Bernard) and other sources we are able to offer a limited number of camp scholarships. Please contact Pastor Spencer if you are interested.

Happy Mother’s Day! Mother’s Day has traditionally been a “high Sunday” in the church year, with many making a point of coming to church with their moms and with special brunches, teas, or muffins in the fellowship hall afterwards.

This is the second Mother’s Day under COVID restrictions, and a special coffee hour celebration is still not yet possible. However, we want all our OHLC moms to know that you are seen, valued, and loved by your church family. The world often sees your calling as trivial, a burden, and less important than other callings in the world. In the Christian church we see the calling of motherhood as holy and blessed, an avenue for discipleship, and a participation with God for the flourishing of humankind.

While Mother’s Day is not a liturgical observance, it has provided us with a regular opportunity to celebrate half of the fourth commandment and honor mothers. We’ll miss that again this year, but know that what you do is important, and that we are honoring you from a distance and in our prayers.

Synod Assembly meets May 15: The NW WA Synod Assembly will be convening via Zoom on Saturday, May 15. Our voting members from OHLC include Bob & Carol Wall, Gaye Rodriguey, Pastor Spencer, and Pastor Stroud. Please keep the whole assembly in your prayers as they gather to worship, learn, and engage in mission together as Lutherans in northwest Washington!

Semi-annual Meeting scheduled for June 13: Save the date! Our next semi-annual meeting will be held between services on Sunday, June 13, at 9:15AM. We will be electing new council members, receiving ministry reports, and getting an update on our budget. This will be an inperson meeting, with all COVID protocols being followed.

Heads up! Who let the dogs out?

The Brotherhood of St. Bernard, a.k.a the Young Pups & Old Dogs, will be let out on Tuesday, June 22 for a “safe” romp and picnic lunch at the Rosario Beach area of Deception Pass St. Park (on the Fidalgo Island side) Circle the date on your calendar and make plans to bring a guest. ohlc women: Fellowship, study, service

has helped me so many times in my day to day living. Daily devotions, Bible verses and prayers set the tone of my day as I navigate the issues of our present time.

And there are so many issues to navigate! Where to begin? Each of us has the opportunity to listen to God and with God's guidance discover which issue speaks to us as the one we are called to embrace. I was called by God to hold Racial Justice in my heart. y education into this began in 2020 when I listened to Ibram X. Kendi’s book, How to be an Antiracist. Prior to that, I read or listened to Jodi Picoult’s Small, Great Things, Mighty Justice by Dovey Johnson Roundtree, Just Mercy (also a movie) by Bryan Stevenson and I Am Not Your Negro (also a movie) by James Baldwin. Mr. Kendi’s book led me to see racism in my own life, in my own family, and in my own town. Merely stating “I’m not a racist” and “I’m colorblind” are not being an antiracist. Antiracism is about action on my part and others to defeat racism. How? For me, it meant asking our Deborah Circle Bible study group to delve into the difficult task of discussing “white privilege.”

Our resource was the study in the Jan. 2020 issue of Living Lutheran, “Unpacking White Privilege, The important work of making the church less harmful,” (still available at livinglutheran.org). It was painful and informative, especially when we read the 26 statements challenging us as white Lutherans to understand how white privilege is borne out in us and in our church. The Circle then read and discussed the series, “Just Love” in the June, July & August 2020 Gather magazines, a study about love and justice in our families, our communities and our nation.

While the title appears to be sweeter, the discussion was not any easier.

The author quoted from a 1981 speech by Audre Lorde called “The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism” and from Rebecca Traister’s 2018 book, Good and Mad, The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger.

The study is free to all and you can download it at womenoftheelca.org. In the fall of 2020 Deborah Circle read and discussed Be the Bridge, Pursuing God’s Heart for Racial Reconciliation

by Latasha Morrison. Again, not an easy read or easy discussion but worthwhile for our growth in a country and world that is wounded and hurting from racial injustice.

I also attended a virtual workshop, “Advocacy Tools for Loving Your Neighbor,” presented by leaders from both the ELCA and the Episcopal Church. The workshop was recorded and is available on YouTube.

Twice I have participated in “Be the Bridge 101 for White Bridge Builders” and I watched Verna Myers’ 2014 TedTalk - again available on YouTube - on “How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly toward them.”

There are many other resources available on our own church websites, elca.org., womenoftheelca.org and luthernsnw.org. Each has information about Racial Justice Ministries and Diversity.

ow do I journey through all that has happened and is happening in our country and around the world? First I rely fully on our God and His son, Jesus. Putting my hope in the Trinity of God and only the Trinity of God will bring peace to my today and to my tomorrow.

My favorite Bible verse is Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope.” Hope, joy, peace, trust, overflow... it’s a powerful verse that 5

e started the month of April with our week of spring break!

Then we wrapped up our Special Student of the week program with our last four students: Amara & Oliver (AM class) and Matthew & Amelia (PM class).

We wrapped up the month with a photo shoot by Ms. Kara of Kara Chappell Photography, who came in to take our school photos for the year! She certainly made us laugh and was able to get gorgeous candid shots of the children.

In the classroom, we created rockets out of paper towel rolls for the letter R. We also made paper lady bugs and dragonflies to add to our recently-updated classroom windows, where Ms. Elva’s friend and artist, Crystal, painted a beautiful flower garden.

Now we are on the tail end of the school year, and we’ve made it through successfully with healthy children and families. We are so proud of our families who have remained diligent in helping us protect our classroom and our staff.

Registration has been underway for the 2021-2022 school year.

We quickly reached waiting list status for our 3-day classes, and have only a few remaining openings in our Pre-K Readiness class! Call the church office if you need more information, 360-679-1561, or e-mail martha@oakharborlutheran.org.

April showers bring May flowers, so we watercolor-painted large umbrellas for the letter U and then proceeded to make flowers out of the bottoms of soda bottles. Also for the letter U, we colored and glued together a unicorn (including a piece of rotini pasta for the horn).

We have bir yellow paper bumblebees with wax paper wings buzzing around the classroom for the letter I for insects. Continuing our study of insects we cut out leaves from green construction paper and then made caterpillars out of pom-poms and pipe cleaners. We also used bright markers to color beautiful paper butterflies, which sat on our wrists as we learned about the life cycle of butterflies. During the month, we observed the ladybug larvae and patiently watched as they finally took on their familiar ladybug form. We also learned about pond life and the stages of a frog’s life. The sound of frogs croaking is a favorite thing, and a sure sign of spring!

The clinic has been serving Whidbey Island and our surrounding communities since 1986. The PCC Board recently expressed their deep appreciation to Sara Wroblewski for nearly 11 years of faithful and diligent service as Client Services Director and Executive Director of the Pregnancy Care Clinic, and they welcomed aboard Karin Black, who has stepped in to fill the position of Executive Director.

ur hearts go out to those in our church family who are suffering the recent loss of loved ones:

... to Bob & Carol Wall and family, following the death of Bob’s cousin, Wayne Wall; ...to our congregation’s good friends, Pastor David & Colleen Lura and their family, following the death of David’s sister-in-law, Terrie Lura.

We were also saddened to receive news of the death of Helen Grigsby on April 21. Her memorial service was held at OHLC on Monday, Apr. 26.

Helen celebrated her 97th birthday last November. She joined OHLC in early 2018 after coming north from Longview to move in with her son Ken. More recently, she was a resident at HomePlace in Oak Harbor, where she became a neighbor of OHLC’s Abby Chromy and Billie Tull.

Mighty to Save Ministries: Offering hope and new beginnings for young adults who want to be free from addictions by providing mentoring, discipling and transition assistance

une 2021 will bring the second anniversary of Jake’s House, a local men’s transitional home operated by Mighty to Save Ministries. Their 2020 annual report noted that five of their residents completed and graduated from the 3-phase program. Two of those men continue to live at Jake’s House as In-House Leaders and the other three have moved out but continue to keep in touch. Two weddings and one GED graduation were celebrated and six driver’s licenses were obtained. All the residents are employed with the exception of one who is a full-time student.

Their primary goal for 2021 is to purchase Jake’s House outright. Monthly program fees paid by each resident would then cover the costs of operations, housing upkeep, and other homeowner expenses.

MtSM plans on exploring the possibility of opening a transition home for women, including mothers with children.

he Pregnancy Care Clinic (PCC) in Oak Harbor is a ministry providing care and support for women and men experiencing unexpected pregnancies, providing free ultra-sounds, counseling, and material support in the form of diapers, clothing, strollers, and more. OHLC member Morrie Parker serves on the board of the PCC. This year, we are once again participating in their annual community-wide fundraiser, the Baby Bottle Boomerang. Those interested in donating to our local PCC may pick up a PCC baby bottle in our narthex on or after June 1. Take it home, fill it with change, cash, and/or a check, and return it to the church on (or by)
