worship space includes imagery of thorns and nails. The themes of our readings and hymns are more serious and solemn.

Rather than shying away from themes of suffering and sacrifice, we gather together for worship on Sundays and Wednesdays to embrace them. Suffering does indeed create community.

The Community of the Cross

“Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have also obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”

Romans 5:1-5

But that’s not all it creates. As St. Paul teaches us in his letter to the Romans, for those who trust in Christ, suffering also produces hope.

ast month, OHLC member Brian Danielson gave a talk after worship about his upcoming journey to Laos, to the site where his father was shot down during the Vietnam war. Brian has been there before. After years of researching what might have happened to his father, who for decades had been listed as “missing in action,” his father’s remains and part of his plane were found. Brian made the journey then to have his father repatriated to the United States. He is going back to Laos this month with his family. Also going is the “backseater” who was in his father’s jet when it went down and survived, as well as another man whose father’s remains have yet to be found.

This time they will be attempting to recover a wing from his father’s jet and bringing school supplies to Laotians in a nearby village. The trip is being filmed for an upcoming documentary by Ramble Pictures.

Another part of Brian’s presentation that grabbed me was a couple of before and after aerial photos of the riverbed where his father’s plane went down. One photo, taken during the war, showed a landscape stripped bare, pockmarked with craters, devoid of life. The second photo, taken recently, showed a lushly restored landscape abundant with trees bursting forth with a glorious display of leaves in every shade of green. It was a beautiful image showing the healing of the land, but it was also a metaphor for the healing of all those hearts that had been broken by the war. It was an illustration of how suffering can give way to hope.

As the community of the cross, we are a people who have been brought together by suffering – both the shared suffering of our human condition and the suffering of our Lord Jesus, who bore the cross to save, heal, and restore us all. Christianity is not merely a philosophy or a belief system. It is a community. The Holy Spirit gathers us together in worship to give our suffering meaning as we come to see ourselves sharing in the suffering of Christ. The Holy Spirit gathers us together in fellowship to shoulder one another’s burdens, making them a bit lighter.

The Holy Spirit gathers us together around Word and Sacrament so that our ache would be eased by the presence of our Heavenly Father.

There was a particular line in Brian’s talk that especially grabbed me. In describing the group headed to Laos, as well as all the many people he has met along the way in his POW/MIA work, he said that “suffering creates community.” Wise words. The people making this trip are bound together in powerful ways by their shared suffering. As they are brought together in community, they shoulder those burdens together, making them a little bit lighter.

Suffering creates community. I’ve been reflecting on this statement and have come to see the group making this trip to Laos as a microcosm of the church. Are we not a community of shared suffering?

Are we not people brought together in our shared ache for the presence of our Father? Do we not shoulder our burdens with one another, making them lighter?

Suffering creates community. What a blessing this community is, this community of the cross. What a gift. As we are gathered into community this Lenten season, we will see that suffering also leads to hope. The new life Christ brings us is starting to take root in us even now. Come and see.

Such reflections are especially timely as we come into the season of Lent, when the church’s attention is drawn to the suffering of our Lord Jesus. During Lent we face and follow the processional cross. Our

Noisy offerings coming to OHLC! During worship on Sunday mornings this Lent the children of OHLC will be encouraged to bring handfuls of coins to toss into a big metal tureen, making a NOISY offering! This will be a joyful noise, as our children will learn about the importance of giving to our congregation.

March 1: Youth & Family Night Pretzels & Prayer It has become a fun tradition at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church to make pretzels at our Lenten-themed Youth & Family Night. Join us from 6:00 to 7:30 on Sunday, March 1, as we roll and shape pretzels (the dough is prepared ahead of time) and then enjoy them fresh and warm out of the oven with all kinds of delicious dipping sauces. We’ll also explore the relationship between pretzels, prayer, and the season of Lent.

All are welcome! Join us for a fun night of faith and fellowship!

Parents, please make sure you have some coins in your purse or pocket to give to your kids before they come up for children’s time!

(These noisy offerings will be hard on the ears and annoying to our counters, so we will only do it during the season of Lent.)

Services will be held at noon and 6:00 PM, with simple meals of soup and bread following immediately afterwards. This adult study focuses on the journey God has made with his chosen people and the unfolding story of God’s salvation brought to all humanity through Jesus Christ.

Discipleship in daily life There is often a big disconnect between what we experience on Sunday mornings at church and how we experience life throughout the rest of the week in our homes. How do we live as disciples of Jesus in our daily lives? Based on the readings and prayers for the Blessing for a Home liturgy, our midweek Lenten services will explore these questions as we move from room to room each week to reflect on Christ’s presence in our homes and how we serve God by carrying out the callings of daily life. Holden Evening Prayer will be our liturgy.

Using the six Old Testament texts assigned to our current Year A of the lectionary, we will cover the seminal moments in the scripture story which highlight the theme of salvation, and why the journey leads to the foot of the cross.

OHLC celebrates Pi(e) Day on March 15 Join us after our 10:30 service on Sunday, March 15 as we celebrate Pi(e) Day! What is Pi(e) Day? Pi is a mathematical term which refers to the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter: 3.1415. It’s used as an excuse to eat pie on or around 3/14.

We’ll be celebrating Pi(e) Day on March 15. As we do so we’ll be giving thanks to God our Creator, who brought into existence both pi and pie! Pie bakers and eaters are encouraged to sign up via the Connection Card in your worship bulletin. We’ll also need some help with serving and clean up. All are welcome to join us. Thanks to Rita Cline for keeping this quirky OHLC tradition going!

In Sympathy We received word on Feb. 25 that Vernyce Seltveit had died. A member of OHLC since 2002, she was Bruce Seltveit’s mother. Please keep Bruce and Kathy and family in your prayers as they mourn her loss.

Jan Kingham, a congregation member since 2018, died on Jan. 31 in Port Angeles; she had moved to Sequim sometime earlier for family and health reasons. Her memorial service was held at her home church in Oregon. While with us, Jan, a resident at Regency, played the piano there for OHLC-sponsored worship gatherings. Our hearts go out to her many friends, including the members of Deborah Circle.

Ava is lonely; her 25-year marriage has fallen apart and her children are off pursuing their own lives. She joins a local book group because of her love for books as well as out of desperation for companionship.

The group’s goal throughout the year is for each member to present the book that matters most to them. Ava’s mission is to rediscover the book from her childhood that helped her through the untimely deaths of her mother and sister.

His Kids Preschool A ministry of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church ebruary was full of fun at His Kids Preschool! We learned about the letters H, V, and Q, along with the 5 senses God gave us to learn about the wonderful world he created for us. During our class time, we made paper towel tube binoculars for sight, a paper plate shaker for hearing, a paper flower for our sense of smell, and paper hands with different textiles on each finger for our sense of touch. We wrapped up the unit with our annual tasting party, where we used all our senses as we tasted a number of interesting foods.

We exchanged valentines and played games at our yearly Valentine’s Day party. We took our yearly field drip to see “Big D” at the Oak Harbor Post Office, where we also mailed our handmade valentines to our families.

His Kids Preschool

It’s hard to believe that we’re thinking about the fall, but we’re gearing up for preschool registration for the 2020-2021 school year! In-house registration started on February 26. Registration for friends and families of OHLC opens on March 4, and community registration begins March 11. Please keep our preschool in mind if you know of a family looking for a preschool home for their little one. We also appreciate your prayers as we prepare for our future preschoolers.

Compassion Ministry

Care Kit items needed: Bath towels, toothbrushes, soap Cleanliness may not actually be next to godliness, but it certainly helps a person feel more human. When families find their homes destroyed, or must flee for their safety, soap and a towel rarely make the cut for what they can carry. Arriving in a refugee camp or other place of safety, they are scared, vulnerable and dirty from the travel.

The simple items included in a Personal Care Kit provide much-needed self-care, critical germ fighting, and the chance to regain dignity amidst situations of fear and uncertainty

March & April focus on the Hunger emphasis eep your eyes and ears open! You’ll have lots of opportunities to hear about the exciting things ELCA does to help people in the world – including in the USA.

We’ll have bulletin inserts, highlighting some of their activity. During our Lenten soup suppers, the placemats will have fun stories you can discuss with your neighbors at the table. Soup supper offerings will be designated for the ELCA Hunger appeal. There may be a special lunch opportunity, too.

Volunteers needed for roadside clean-up The next OHLC roadside clean-up event will be Saturday, March 28, for our adopted 2-mile stretch of Highway 20 north of town. It’s been more than 4 months since we picked up litter, so it needs a little OHLC community assistance, rain or shine! We’ll meet at 8:30 AM to carpool to the site.

I joined others from the Ministerial Association for Ashes-to-Go today.

We stood out in the sunshine in front of QFC, I in my vestments and stole, offering imposition of ashes to passers-by. It was a beautiful day to be out and we had some rich conversation – people were polite and cheerful, curious and grateful. AND I find it crazy uncomfortable to go so unexpectedly public with my faith – I mean, a parking lot in vestments?!

It is silly really, I am a paid religious professional and never try to hide my faith. But Ashes-to-Go is a challenge, pushes me out of my comfort zone. Maybe that is just right for Lent.

I invite you to something which may be new and uncomfortable for you. In this season, as your read God’s Word, as you receive rich preaching, as you engage in Lenten study, consider what God has to say about how the vulnerable are cared for in our society. Might you be called to share your insights and yearnings with people in power? Might your voice, grounded in God’s Word and presence, be needed to tell the story of God’s people here at Josephine?
