about Jesus’ teaching and focused instead on his incarnation, his suffering and death, and his resurrection?

Following Jesus

“Then Jesus said to them all, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’”

The truth is, following Jesus means something more than being his students, striving to live out the teachings of an ancient rabbi. It means something more than imitating him, which is a limited prospect at best. After all, who among us can turn water into wine, or multiply loaves and fishes, or raise the dead simply by calling their name?

Following Jesus means walking in his shadow to the cross, where we behold what he has done for us. Jesus cannot be our teacher or example without first and foremost being our savior. Following Jesus means returning to the cross daily so the old person in us can die daily with him, so we can be set free from our sins and our failures again and again and raised up to new life in him. Following Jesus means walking behind him and watching him succeed in his obedience to the Father where we have failed, living a righteous life on our behalf. Following Jesus means walking behind him as he blazes a trail for us into the Kingdom of God, where there is forgiveness, life, and peace.

W

hat does it mean to follow Jesus? Certainly part of what it means is to obey his teaching. In the Great Commission, Jesus told the apostles to “make disciples (students, followers) of all peoples… teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). Following Jesus, then, means learning from him and implementing everything he teaches into our daily lives. We pray as he teaches us to pray. We strive to live as he teaches us to live.

We seek to carry out his mission by sharing the gospel as he has commanded us.

If your understanding of the Christian life is only ever about following Jesus’ teaching and example, it will inevitably lead you to one of two places: either pride or despair. It will lead to pride if you think of yourself as a model student, and despair when you finally realize that you are not. But neither pride nor despair, it should be noted, is a fruit of the Spirit! The Christian life is instead first and foremost a pattern of daily dying and rising. This might sound esoteric or even morbid, but it is the most wonderfully freeing thing in the world! We die daily with Christ so that we can be raised to new life in him. Only the daily death of the old self and its sins can create the space needed for the new person to come forth. This new person rises to a life of faith, hope, peace, and joy that begins now and continues forever. As St. Paul said, “For if we have been united with Jesus in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his” (Romans 6:5).

Relatedly, following Jesus also involves striving to imitate him.

Jesus himself encourages us to do this. On the night of his betrayal Jesus washed the feet of his disciples in a shocking display of humility and love. Then he said to his disciples, “So if I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. I have set an example, that you also should do as I have done to you” (John 13:1415). And so following Jesus also means imitating him, so that his love would be reflected in and through our lives.

This is all true and good, but there’s more to following Jesus than this. Think about it: If Jesus came simply to teach us and give us an example to follow, why all that messy business with the cross? Couldn’t God have sent Jesus to teach, both by word and by example, and then gone straight to the Ascension? Or why does St. Paul, Jesus’ handpicked apostle to the Gentiles, say so little about Jesus’ teaching as found in the gospels and so very much about his sacrifice on the cross? Or why is the Apostles’ Creed, the earliest Christian confession, utterly silent

Lent begins this month, and it incorporates all these themes of following Jesus: the obedience of discipleship, the call to imitate his sacrificial love, and most especially the dying to ourselves that we might be raised up in him. This Lent, come and follow Jesus into the life he has in store for you, today and forever.

Wilderness with Luther’s Small Catechism In a series of skits, we’ll follow a father and son on a backcountry camping trip through the wilderness, sharing some important conversations along the way. We’ll also sing the service of Holden Evening Prayer and have responsive readings from Luther’s Small Catechism. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the basics of the Christian faith in an interesting new way!

Easter:

Easter Sunday is April 21, and we’ll decorate the sanctuary with pots of begonias in celebration of Christ’s resurrection. Order forms will be available at church later in March.

Luth Youth head to QUAKE – thanks to you!

Growing & Learning

We have 14 youth and 4 adult chaperones attending the Quake youth ministry event at Great Wolf Lodge in Centralia, March 8-10!

The Bible Project in March

The theme is Diverge. Attendees will explore the idea that “to live a life of Christ, we need to diverge from the ordinary roads of this world to follow the extraordinary path He created for us.”

This is a great time to join us as The Bible Project continues to journey through the books of the New Testament. We meet in the Library/Fireside Room on Sundays from 9:15 to 10:15 AM, and Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. If you’d like to get caught up on previous books we’ve covered you can visit our church website or Facebook page for videos and discussion questions from past sessions.

Our group is able to go with minimal cost to families because of generous contributions from Lydia Circle, the Brotherhood of St. Bernard, generous individuals, and proceeds from our pancake feed.

OHLC celebrates Pi(e) Day on March 17!

Ethan Kai Woosoo Baek Piper was baptized at OHLC on Sunday, February 17. Ethan Kai is the son of Seth and Janet Piper, and the grandson of OHLC’s own Tom Piper. We were blessed to have Ethan Kai’s grandmother, Sunwha, here for his special day all the way from Korea! We wish Ethan and his family well as they eventually make their way back home to Kotzebue, Alaska.

Join us after our 10:30 service on Sunday, March 17 as we celebrate Pi(e) Day! What is Pi(e) Day? Pi is a mathematical term which refers to the ration of a circle’s circumference to its diameter: 3.1415. When March 14 rolls around each year (3/14), people celebrate by eating pie.

We’ll be celebrating Pi(e) Day a little late this year, but as we do so we’ll be giving thanks to God our Creator, who brought into existence both pi and pie! Pie bakers are encouraged to sign up via the Connection Card in your worship bulletin to bring pie; we’ll also need some help with serving and clean up. All are welcome to join us. Thanks to Rita Cline for keeping this wonderful, quirky OHLC tradition going!

Male Ensemble Northwest: Concert to be rescheduled February’s snow forced the rescheduling of many events, including the concert by northwestern school choral directors. Watch for forthcoming news; we’re hoping they’ll be able provide a concert for the community in the fall.

2019 Women’s Retreat

Very long-time OHLC members may remember Marge Gonyea [Hi, Marge!] who joined our congregation in 1961 and has continued to be a faithful reader of our newsletter since she transferred out in 1971. We received word that Marge will celebrate her 100th birthday in April, and her family is planning an event in the Lynnwood area on April 6 (time & location to be announced).

If you’d like to attend or send birthday greetings, we have Marge’s address in Everett on file in the church office, as well as her daughter’s contact information in Bothell.

Pick up a registration form in the church office for this spring’s retreat. April 26-28 at Quaker Cove Retreat Center, Anacortes. The theme is Loving Kindness, based on Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Registration fees are due by April 12: Full weekend (lodging + meals) is $105; Saturday only (2 meals), $50.

ebruary’s snowstorms (!!) put a damper on some of our fun activities at His Kids, but not a complete stop! We missed several days in class because of the weather, but we made it back in time to have our Valentine’s party and learn more about God’s love for us.

During the month we learned about our five senses that God gives us to help us learn about His world. Some of things we made to help us with our five senses were shakers made out of plastics eggs for hearing, a paper towel tube telescope for vision, flowers for the sense of smell, a sensory garden full of different textures for touch, and we then finally ended the unit by celebrating our sense of taste with a party!

We also learned a little about our country’s first President, George Washington, and our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln.

We managed to get to our field trip, although 2 weeks later than normal because of our snow, but Big Dan at the United States Post Office in Oak Harbor did a great job showing us how our mail gets delivered to our homes.

In March, we will be gearing up for fall registration 2019/20! In-house registration with current preschool families will be on Wednesday, March 13. Oak Harbor Lutheran members and friends will begin registering on Wednesday, March 20, and finally community registration will open on Wednesday, March 27. Spread the word!

In Sympathy

Our star students for the month of February were Cole, Logan Z., and Lily in the morning class, and Avery, Kaitlyn, and Alina in the afternoon class. Be sure to look at our hallway bulletin board for the weekly updates on our star students’ posters.

Our hearts go out to Kay Williamson, following the death of her sister, Ann Hall, in Syracuse, NY.

We were saddened to receive word of the death of Mavis Parillo on Feb. 14 at her home in Texas. A much-loved former member, she had moved there some months ago to be closer to family. There will be a memorial for Mavis at OHLC on May 17.

Peace be to their memory.

2-month highlight: ELCA World Hunger

T

he Ministry of the Month for both March and April is the ELCA World Hunger Appeal and the exciting things that are taking place. One of these is Reconciliation Lutheran Church and Community Center in the Juba area of Sudan, a combination primary health care clinic and worship center, attracting refugees and people of all backgrounds.

Participants must be at least 15 years old. High school students take note: this is a good opportunity to get 2 to 3 hours of volunteer time which can count towards graduation volunteer requirements.

During our Lenten soup lunches and suppers, take a look at the informational placemats you’ll find as part of the table settings in the fellowship hall. Sign-ups begin: 2nd Annual Old Dogs - Young Pups Cancer Relay Team

On Sunday, March 31, we will welcome Sharon Magnuson, Associate Director of the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Ms Magnuson, now based in the Portland, Oregon area, will be accompanied by her colleague Gabe Brannan. They will speak briefly during both morning worship services, will be available for conversation in the fellowship hall between services, and then will give a presentation in the library after the 10:30 service. Let’s give our partners in ministry a warm OHLC welcome! A light lunch will be served – if you plan to attend, please make a note on a Connection Card in your Sunday bulletin to help us with the meal planning.

ast year Oak Harbor Lutheran Church fielded 44 volunteers at the annual Whidbey Relay for Life Cancer Drive. Our team was 10th in team contributions with gift pledges of $2,396. (See the recognition certificate on the bulletin board in the hallway near the offices.) Total drive amount was over $104,000.

Tom Piper, team captain, invites you to join us again this year.

The event is May 31 from 5:00 PM until 12:00 Noon on June 1 and located at the North Whidbey Middle School track.

Marriage Encounter weekend set for May 31 – June 2

and to ask these questions—because now I have a context in which to reflect and respond.

A

Marriage Encounter weekend is 44 hours where married couples can get away from jobs, kids, chores, and phones, and focus only on each other. If you’d like greater depth, growth, and enrichment in your relationship, you’ll like the difference a Lutheran Marriage Encounter weekend can make. Join millions of couples worldwide who have learned how to keep their marriage vibrant and alive.

It’s important for me to realize that I am often preaching to those who are poor, feel captive, and are often blind themselves. I also believe, though, that when we can be a part of liberating others we can often be freed to find life as well—real life. I think this is why one of the most important parts of worship for those I work with is the offering.

For folks in their lives who are in the position of needing to receive care all the time, even for the simplest of their daily needs, many find life in being able to participate in the act of giving. This is why for the past couple of months, I’ve been putting together videos, to be shown during worship time, of where their offerings are going. We’ve been intentional about our giving and where it goes—spreading our gifts locally, nationally, and internationally, some directly connected with eldercare and sometimes beyond, some as continued support and some for new ministries… It’s been wonderful to be able to share that even though their limitations are real, and never what they would have ever imagined or hoped for, that they can also in their own small but significant ways be a part of liberating others.

The next Marriage Encounter weekend in western Washington will be held May 31-June 2 in Renton. Registration is now open! To register, go to www.godlovesmarriage.org.

This past Sunday, I shared about an $800 benevolence that they made to the Good Gifts Program. I not only shared how their contributions helped buy pigs, chicks, goats, honeybees, a share of a cow, a share of an oxen and plow, and a fish farm but also how important each of these livestock can specifically be to those who are poor and often captive in that poverty. Next week, I will share their participation in helping provide clean water to communities and their help in providing micro-loans especially to women. It’s been totally life-giving to help our folks connect a face to the few dollars they put in the offering plate on Sundays. Maybe we’ve also discovered what we were anointed to do. If you are interested in seeing some of these videos, I will try to post them on our website for you. For now, let me offer a continued word of thanks for your partnership and for allowing us to continue our ministry here on your behalf. God bless you all!

Liberating Beyond our Walls Dear Partners: For those of you on the lectionary cycles for worship, you may have remembered Jesus confirming his mission in life: “...the Spirit has anointed me to bring good news to the poor...proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free…” (Luke 4:18). As I do weekly, I now try to read these texts through the eyes of the people I work with at Josephine.

How would they read and relate to the scriptures we have? Would they take this text from Luke 4 and say: “I’m on a very limited income. What kind of good news could I offer the poor?” “I’m confined to a wheelchair and can’t drive anymore—how can I offer any kind of release to those who are captive?” “Sight to the blind?—I need a size 32 font to read these days and I can’t find my own glasses half the time!” As their pastor, I think it’s important for me to at least try to step in their shoes

HIS KIDS PRESCHOOL Saint Patrick used the shamrock to teach people about the Godhead. Holding up a shamrock, he challenged them, “Is this one leaf, or three?”

Inevitably, people replied that it was both, prompting Patrick to draw the analogy that so, too, is God: one God in three Persons — the Holy Trinity.
