I hear God’s Word, I am reminded that I am forgiven and loved. As I receive the Lord’s Supper, I am fed with that forgiveness and love. All of this works together to give me a sense of wholeness, making me complete, sound. It roots me once again in right relationship with God, moving my heart to greater openness to seeking right relationship with all those around me. The peace I receive in church isn’t so much about my emotions, which vary. It is about my identity in Christ, which makes me whole.

Why Church? Part Two: Peace

[Jesus said:] “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” John 14:27 “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

his article is the second in a three-part series seeking to articulate specific tangible reasons for being active, participating members of the church. These are my personal reasons for why I find church life so meaningful, not only as a pastor but as a Christian. In offering them, I hope you will be prompted to reflect on your own reasons for participating in the life of the church, and in so doing be better equipped to share your reasons with others. These three articles are not an exhaustive list of my reasons – more like my top three. Last month I wrote about community. This week, in at number two, is peace.

Our Sunday worship concludes with the sending: “Go in peace, serve the Lord.” The latter exhortation changes seasonally – but not the former. We always say, “Go in peace.” Gathering with God’s people around Word and Sacrament shapes how I live the rest of the week as a whole person. Having been “righted” by Christ Jesus, I go with the assurance of his gracious and loving presence throughout the week. The inevitable struggles of human life are ever-present, but they are put in proper perspective. They wield less power over me. Knowing who and whose I am brings a measure of contentedness no matter what is going on around me. I do indeed go in peace.

Peace, biblically speaking, is much more than the common understanding of peace as the absence of strife or hostilities or anxiety.

The biblical concept of peace (Hebrew: shalom) includes a sense of wholeness. It means being in right relationship – first and foremost with God, but also with others. It means to be complete, to be sound.

Why church? Because it is at church – through immersing oneself in the life of the church – that Christ Jesus gives his peace, peace that the world cannot give. It is through regular, consistent, ideally weekly worship that we are shaped by the peace that surpasses all understanding. It is at church that we are reminded of who and whose we are. This is much more than a peaceful, easy feeling (Sorry, Eagles).

It is the ongoing process of being swept up in God’s shalom.

I find peace at church. This doesn’t mean I’m never anxious . In fact, on Sunday mornings my mind is usually racing rather than restful.

There are so many details to tend to! And even after more than 18 years of preaching, I still get nervous about it. Leading worship on Sunday morning is always deeply meaningful For me, finding to me, but it isn’t a calm, relaxing experience. peace at church has

I hope you “Go in peace” on Sunday mornings. I hope you will share that peace with others by inviting them to join us. So very many people are searching for a peace the world cannot give them. They can find it at church, but they’ll never know that unless they come – and they probably won’t come unless they are invited.

more to do with being reminded by God of who, and whose, I am.

For me, finding peace at church isn’t a matter of being lulled into a calm emotional state, though prayer, scripture readings, choir anthems, and Holy Communion often help calm my Sunday morning jitters. For me, finding peace at church has more to do with being reminded by God of who, and whose, I am. As I see the font, I am reminded that I am a baptized child of God, joined to Christ forever. As

On Sunday, June 10, we will honor our Sunday School teachers during worship, and the classes will finish off the year with a potluck party at 9:15 in the education wing.

Registration now open for Camp Lutherwood We have a wonderful camp right in our own back yard, on the shores of beautiful Lake Samish in Bellingham. Camp Lutherwood is currently taking registrations for summer campers. You can register online at www.camplutherwood.org.

Through gifted funds from the OHLC Men’s Group (The Brotherhood of St. Bernard) we are able to offer a limited number of partial camp scholarships. Please contact the church office if you are interested.

Grad Sunday will be celebrated June 10 Join us as we celebrate Grad Sunday on Sunday, June 10. We will bestow upon Will Danielson his very own quillow (a custom-made quilt that folds into a pillow), as well as a blessing and our prayers as he marks this milestone. We will have a cake reception after the 10:30 AM service.

e had a wonderful time at the Muffins with Moms event for Mother’s Day. Thank you to all who attended and donated towards Vacation Bible School. Thank you to the Brotherhood of St. Bernard for preparing muffins for this event, serving, and cleaning up afterwards. You are much appreciated!

VBS Day Camp is approaching! Here are two reminders: Volunteer space is still available for 6th graders and above,. including junior counselor opportunities for those who have completed 7th grade and up. All voting members of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church are encouraged to attend our semi-annual meeting, which will be held on Sunday, June 10 from 9:15 to 10:15 AM. We will be electing council and endowment committee members, hearing a budget update, and receiving reports from our ministry teams. Written reports will be available in the narthex before the meeting.

Brotherhood of St. Bernard, 4th annual Who Let the Dogs Out? lunch & meeting

On Tuesday, June 26, the Old Dogs & Young Pups of the Brotherhood of St. Bernard will gather at Ft. Ebey State Park picnic area.

This is the fabulous location of our first such summertime gathering; directions will be posted later. Start time is 11:30 AM; bring Bibles and an appetite.

Yes, literal old dogs and young pups may come too if they’re on a leash.

Once again, there will be recreational activities: this year’s we’re adding scuba diving, hang gliding, tree climbing, surfboarding [ED. NOTE: Tom, if you provide the photos we’ll put them in the next newsletter] and power naps after lunch. Regular attendees are encouraged to invite someone new to join us.

CREDO St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble returns to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church

he Russians return! OHLC’s Russian Partnership Kazan Committee will host a special concert of Credo St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble on Friday, June 8, at 7 PM. The concert is free and open to the public.

Featuring fantastic Russian male singers, the ensemble includes the talents of Kirill Sokolov, Sergey Shapinsky, Vadim Smanster, and Andrei Volikov, who have been performing in churches and concert halls throughout the US since 2002. Their concerts reflect their culture and heritage, with a balance of sacred songs by Russian composers and Russian folk songs. A free-will offering will be received to support their US Tour.

It is 2011 and all universities in North Korea have been shut down for an entire year. The students are sent to construction fields except for the 270 highly rated in their studies. These students become the classes of Pyongyang University of Science and Technology or PSTU. In the walled compound, portraits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il look down on the students in every room. Suki Kim, a volunteer American teacher, offers a moving, incalculably rare glimpse of life in the world’s most unknowable country and these young men she calls soldiers and slaves.

His Kids Preschool

Our class picnic was held at Ft. Nugent Park. The bubble maker was going, children were playing, and memories were made. What a beautiful year it was! Here’s how the children finished the sentence, “My favorite preschool memory was…”

hile His Kids Preschool was wrapping up the school year, we were having a more difficult time wrapping that around our minds! Didn’t we just begin?!

We had beautiful weather when we visited Ms. Debbie Reetz and our classroom rabbit Little Blue at their farm for our May field trip.

While there, we saw and learned about sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, cows, turkeys, rabbits, and horses! We helped her plant onions, fed some of the animals, and even roped a steer! It was a practice one, mind you. No steers or children were harmed during this field trip.

Our month, in and out of the classroom, was fun-filled and action-packed. We had our annual bowling party at The Oak Bowl and Mario’s Pizza. The children were able to bowl, eat pizza, and have fun with their friends that they have made over the course of the school year.

Preschool families were invited to the last chapel time for the year. Our students received their certificates for all the hard work, smiled for photo opportunities, and sang for their families. For some of our children, they will be heading off to kindergarten, but others we are anticipating their return in the fall. Either way, it’s sad to know that our hallways will be quiet for a few months in the summer.

God’s Peace and we wish you a happy summer!

Our Pre-K Readiness Class enjoyed having a whole school day with Ms. Elva and Ms. Michelle. This opportunity allows them to take in what it would be like in a classroom setting for an entire day, and help them prepare for what kindergarten may be like next year.

This class also paid a visit to Broadview Elementary, and we met one of Sara Harbaugh’s favorite kindergarten teachers, Ms. Hwang. She invited our children to their circle time, read to them, and then gave them a tour of what a kindergarten class looks like.

Compassion Ministry We want your stuff!

I

t’s that time of year again, GARAGE SALE TIME! and Watoto is the Ministry of the Month for June (Coincidence? We don’t think so!). The Watoto Garage Sale will be held at church on Saturday, June 16, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. You may drop off your donations on Friday, June 15, 3:00-7:00 PM. Please, NO electronics, clothing, or exercise equipment. See a team member for info regarding large items.

OHLC’s volunteers are on duty the last Wednesday & Thursday of the month, 3:00-6:00 PM. At 3 we begin serving beverages to guests, and once we know the menu we begin to take food orders. Our goal is to have 4 people serve each time. Sometime on Thursday we have 5.

Watch for our informational bulletin board in the narthex! Also in June, we’ll be hosting coffee hour after both services on Sunday, June 10, and after the one service on Sunday, June 24. Future events include the annual Oktoberfest in October!

Last but not least…and in fact quite exciting, we have an investor who has purchased the “Sweet Rice” building on Pioneer. He will be “leasing” the lower level of the building to SPIN Cafe for 15 years for a minimum amount. Our next step is to upgrade the building area and put in a commercial kitchen so food can be prepared on-site. It will also give SPIN some better options of service that meet with the original goals and will involve some major fundraising.

Once you’re there, be sure you sign-in using the new time clock in the back room. It’s important for SPIN to track volunteer hours so they can apply for grants and for other reports. And as long as I’m talking about “paperwork,” double check that your food server permit is up to date and be sure you have a volunteer form on file at SPIN.

All money received from Watoto fundraising goes to support women and children in Uganda, meeting education and medical needs. It also helps support our 3rd-year medical student in Uganda.

Oak Harbor Lutheran Church sponsorship/participation in the cancer Relay for Life Event begins June 1, 6 PM at the track at North Whidbey Middle School for the opening ceremony and continues through June 2 at noon for the closing ceremony. Even if you didn’t sign up, please plan to come by and support our Old Dogs-Young Pups team and stop by for a delicious brownie at OHLC’s booth. Thank you in advance for all who donated time, energy, brownies, and money to support this great American Cancer Society fundraiser.

Jon Coble is serving at each of the meal times and is the overall coordinator and go to guy if you have questions. In addition, John picks up the food, frequently has drinks prepared, and stays to do all the clean up. That means you don’t have to do that and can easily get out of there by 6:00 PM. 9

End of Life Washington seminar motivated us to act n April 14, Bob and I attended the End of Life O seminar offered at church that helped us look at what can sometimes be a difficult discussion.

However, that being said, I wonder if there is a part of the life of faith that we should also not allow to simply be dictated just by a life that happens to us. Hear the voice of the Jews who would have such a strong faith in God that they would expect God to show up in every moment in their lives, especially in their times of suffering. Their expectation would be so strong that they would be so bold as to argue with God when they didn’t see God showing up! I love that spirit. I’m inspired by that spirit. It’s a faith that expects that with God there can be no moment in life that can be “ordinary.”

We all know that we will eventually face the “end of our lives” and our faith can give us peace about that.

This program is about making crucial decisions about how you want to be treated medically when you may not be able to make those decisions.

We had previously completed Health Directives as part of our Will and Trust preparations. This program gave us more in-depth information and motivated us to update our previous decisions, giving more options and choices and helping us to understand today’s legal climate.

We looked at things like ‘what quality of life do you want and at what expense?” “Do you want to be at home?” and who should care for you. Who do you want to make those decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself?

“Carpe diem!”–“Seize the day!”– or even “Seize your moment!” (from the movie Coco), all phrases that move us to see that each moment can be pregnant with God’s spirit. Once we are able to name the some times extremely difficult parts of life that just happen to us, I wonder if our life of faith then has the capacity and boldness to expect that God will also come?

The class was taught by two women who are dedicated to this program. As a result of what we learned, we updated our Health Directives and added directives related to Dementia/ Alzheimer’s. With God’s help, we plan to be around for many years, and this gives us a sense of peace and closure. I urge you to ask the church to invite End of Life Washington to return and give another seminar. Do you have a preferred day of the week or time? Let your ideas be known.

Let’s take an example. If Martha has memory loss, might she have the capacity to name that loss, not be embarrassed about it, and acknowledge that her value is based on how God looks at her and not by her disease? If Martha’s disease will no longer allow her to do that, can she count on her caring community to help her? If she feels useless because she can’t remember things, could her caring community help her “seize the day” and find ways for her to be useful again?

A volunteer named Dawn is stepping forward as Martha’s caring community to help. By visiting Martha in the Memory Care twice a week, she is pronouncing that she is worth hanging around with. By leading an adult coloring session with Martha, Dawn helps her “seize the day.” By framing those colored pictures and hanging them up on the wall when they are done, she is opening the opportunity up to Martha that with a little creativity she can be useful again.

In sympathy Our hearts go out to Diana Bull and family following the death of her husband, Lyle Bull, at their home on North Whidbey on May 4.

He was 80. During the course of a long and notable career with the Navy, Admiral Bull developed connections across the globe but he and his family still retained a solid anchor at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.

His memorial service was held on May 12 at the chapel at NAS Whidbey, with Pastor Jeffrey R. Spencer and Pastor David Lura officiating.

It’s a girl!

We’re delighted to welcome Adelia Marie Miller into the world, born May 11 in Anacortes! Adelia and her parents, Seth and Becky (Ogren), are doing well, as are first-time grandparents Eric & Lynne Ogren. Adelia’s baptism was celebrated on May 27. Lynne and Eric were here for the birth and baptism and to reconnect with their many friends before Lynne had to head back to the pulpit at Zion Lutheran Church in Lewistown, Montana.
