From the Pastor: God Be With You

I

enjoy etymology, the study of how words originate and change over time. One word with a particularly interesting history is “good-bye.” It can be traced back to late Middle English, where it was a phrase of prayerful blessing, alternately spelled as God be wy ye, god b’w’y, or godbwye. This was more than a polite thing to say to someone leaving, it was used to call on God to be present for and with someone who was departing. In Early Modern English the phrase became the more recognizable “God be with ye.” With the influence of increasingly popular phrases like “good day” and “good night” in modern English, the “God” in “God be with ye,” was replaced with “good” and the “be with ye” was shortened to “bye.” At the beginning of the 17th century, both “goodbye” and “God be with you” were in common use, as evident in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, when Ophelia uses both phrases interchangeably as she parts with Laertes. Today, four centuries later, “God be with you” is almost never used, even by Christians. “God be with you” has given way to “goodbye,” and the sense of prayerful blessing has been lost.

Bennett family, God be with you as you move to Polson, Montana. Your big, blended, Brady Bunch family was always a joy to have filling up a pew. I will always remember baptizing you all (except the already-baptized Deren). I thought it was so neat for your family to share that experience together. God be with you.

Norman family, God be with you as you move to Texas. Thank you for strong, steady leadership as our council president this past year, Jennifer. (And for being a great kindergarten teacher for my son Anders!)

I loved having you in confirmation, Elizabeth. Katie, your sweet smirk as an early service acolyte brightened many of our mornings. I’m sorry you’re all going, but glad you’ll be reunited at last with Brian as he continues to serve our country in important ways. God be with you.

Higgins family, you’ve defied the odds of Navy families and managed to stay put on Whidbey Island for a long time. In the process, you’ve blessed our congregation over the years in ways too numerous to mention. You’ve celebrated many milestones with us, and became dear friends to many at OHLC, including my family. You will be missed.

God be with you as you make your way to Rochester, New York.

It is probably too much to hope that we would recover the phrase “God be with you” in modern culture as it stands today. It does seem important to me, however, that as Christians we understand the sense of blessing and prayer hidden in the origin of the word goodbye. It seems to me it is important for a congregation like ours, where military mobility and other factors lead to so many goodbyes. It’s especially timely to consider the meaning behind the word “goodbye,” as we have more goodbyes to say than usual this spring. Four beloved families will be moving away from Oak Harbor, and thus leaving Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, in the weeks ahead. They will leave empty spaces in pews. They will leave crucial volunteer spots open. Most importantly, their departure will leave some holes in our hearts.

We don’t just say goodbye to all of you, we send each of your families off with a prayer and a blessing. We give thanks to God for your time here, and call on God to make his presence known to you in your new homes. God be with you all.

We who remain do well to remember that God is with us, too.

The absences we will feel so sharply in the weeks to come become more tolerable when we remember to not just say goodbye, but to send them off with prayer and blessing. When our goodbyes are prayerful, those holes in our heart are filled with God’s presence, and we are reminded that in Christ we remain united in faith with these friends, and all our brothers and sisters in Christ, today and forever.

Saying goodbye isn’t fun, and we have some painful ones coming down the pike. What might help our friends who are leaving, as well as us who remain, is to remember that hidden between the vowels and consonants of the word “goodbye” is a prayer and a blessing. When we say goodbye we aren’t just politely wishing them well, we are calling on God’s presence and asking God to follow them from this place to their new homes.

od is with us here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, and so our G ministry continues. These friends can never be replaced, but as the ebb and flow of congregational life in a military community continues we can rejoice in the newcomers and returnees God is already bringing through our doors. Through the tears of this larger-than-usual wave of goodbyes, let us not neglect to joyfully say “hello.”

So, Suley family, God be with you as you return to Canada. We give thanks for your time at OHLC.

Growing & Learning

Sunday School wraps up the school year

J

une 5 will be a “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday for our Sunday School students and their families. During the Sunday School hour (9:15-10:15AM) we will be pulling weeds around the church.

Come to church in your yellow t-shirt and grubby jeans or shorts. (Feel free to wear them to worship, too!) Bring weeding tools, gloves, and anything else you may find helpful.

Our last Sunday of the program year will be June 12, which will include a teacher appreciation celebration.

YOUTH & FAMILY NIGHT AT OHLC Sunday, June 5, 6:00-7:30 PM Join us as we gather on the first Sunday of the month for a time of fun and fellowship for all ages! You are encouraged to have an early Sunday family dinner, and then meet at church for dessert, games, and devotions. Here’s what we’ll be doing in June:

First we’ll meet in the fellowship hall for BANANA SPLITS!

It’s not too early to collect school supplies We’ll be collecting items in August for School Kits for Lutheran World Relief, so start now to keep your eyes open for sales of school supplies! Kits contain:

After we enjoy our banana splits, we’ll break up into age-specific groups for games throughout our facilities.

In honor of Father’s Day, adults will meet with Pastor Spencer in the library for a conversation on fatherhood, including a powerful video called:

“Fathers as Image-Bearers” All adults – moms and dads as well as grandparents, guardians, and anyone else who cares about children – are welcome and encouraged to join us for this conversation.

We’ll conclude our evening with family-friendly devotions in the sanctuary.

We’ll put the donation box in the narthex as the collection time draws near.

Boomerang those baby bottles!

Those who picked up baby bottles on Mother’s Day to fill with cash, change, and/or checks as part of the fundraiser for the Pregnancy Care Clinic (PCC) in Oak Harbor are reminded to bring them back to OHLC on or by Father’s Day, June 19. Thanks to all who participated!

If you have any questions about our local PCC or would like to get more involved in their ministry, talk to OHLC member Morrie Parker, who serves on the PCC board.

Church picnic planned for August 7 Mark your calendars for our church picnic at the Muzzall farm!

We’ll have worship in the barn at 11 AM, followed by a barbecue potluck, games, and fellowship. Directions and more information will be coming later this summer.

High School grads to be recognized on June 12

oin us as we celebrate our high school graduates during worship on Sunday, June 12. Lauren Aspery, Mariah Harbaugh, Dalton Martin, and Zachary Tull will all be invited to come forward to receive a quillow (a quilt that folds into a pillow, OHLC’s traditional gift to our graduates), as well as a blessing and our prayers as they mark this milestone.

Attention, music men!

It’s time for us to share our talents with the church in song.

We’re scheduled to sing twice this summer, June 26 & July 17.

Rehearsals will be Wednesdays, 6:30-7:00, starting June 1. Please mark your calendars and plan to be there. As always, invite any other guys to join the fun (auditions aren’t necessary, but it helps if they can sing a little!).

Get ready for Vacation Bible School!

Semi-annual meeting set for June 19 All voting members of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church are encouraged to attend our semi-annual meeting, which will be held between services on Sunday, June 19, 9:15-10:15 AM. We will elect council and endowment committee members, hear a budget update and a report from the synod assembly, and receive reports from our ministry teams.

Written reports will be available in the narthex before the meeting.

Please note the new bylaws mentioned in the last newsletter have been postponed for consideration until our next semi-annual meeting.

LWR shipment report

O

n May 5, OHLC shipped 1180 pounds to the Seattle Ingathering.

From there it will be shipped to Baltimore before being sent around the world to people in need. The shipment included : 115 personal care kits 262 baby care kits 88 tied quilts Many people made this shipment possible. Thank you to the congregation for funds to pay for the cost of shipping itself. None of this is possible without your support. You also provided items for the personal care kits which our Sunday School kids, teachers, and helpers collected, sorted, put together and boxed. GREAT JOB, SUNDAY SCHOOL! Another thank you to Karen Bowers who made the baby care kits. If you would like to help Karen, she will gladly accept baby clothes, sweaters, hats sizes up to 24 months and receiving blankets.

Blanket Workshop ladies turned out the colorful and warm quilts.

They made use of the fabrics that have been donated to that cause. They are always on the lookout for gently-used sheets (any size). Fabric and sheets can be labeled and left with Carol in the office.

A huge thank you to Rita Carter for securing the bus on generous loan from Whidbey Sea-Tac Shuttle, then driving it to Seattle to deliver the goods. A big shout of thanks to all those who helped Rita load the bus on the evening before. Blessings to one and all who helped make this shipment a success.

Circles Deborah Circle meets every Thursday in the library, 10 AM to noon (except during Vacation Bible School week in late July).

Lydia Circle meets on the 1st & 3rd Mondays of the month, 6:00 PM in the prayer room (Note: No meeting on July 4).

Ministries of the month for June & July June’s focus will be OHLC’s Caregiving Team, which includes the one-to-one outreach of our Parish Nurse, Stephen Ministers, and Eucharistic Ministers.

In July, we’ll highlight OHLC’s support of SPIN Café, Serving People In Need in the Oak Harbor area. SPIN offers regular meal services, vocational training, support groups and day center hours.

Deborah Circle News June’s Bible study, “Slow Faith” (in the Gather magazine) is written by Liv Larson Andrews, pastor of Salem Lutheran Church in Spokane. She will be one of the panelists at the Region One Women’s Gathering (see above).

Shalom to you, dear friends!

The day of Ascension is coming soon.

I realized suddenly that Easter is not only Jesus’ death on a cross and then His Resurrection. The beginning of Easter took its place with a great fight on the Holy Thursday. This fight was completely finished only with the glorious arrival of Holy Spirit. During this time there was a special period, between the Resurrection and the Ascension. Forty days, when no bright miracles and powerful omens happened. Jesus simply showed himself resurrected. Besides, he did this to a rather small group of people, who were prepared to become witnesses of His Resurrection.

I asked myself, why did he show himself only to a small group of chosen people? He could be resurrected powerfully and gloriously, so that the whole Jerusalem could be stunned seeing that! Make it so that many people could have witnessed it and wrote it down in their books.

But he came only to a small number of unimportant people, whose words cost nothing and do not deserve to be written. That’s why we know the story only from the New Testament.

Why has this happened so? A simple answer came to my mind: it’s probably because He didn’t want to take blessing off the church. The blessing, about which he said Thomas: “...blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29).

St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble from Russia returns for a concert at OHLC

he St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble returns to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, Friday, June 10, 7:00 PM, to present a concert of Masterpieces of Russian Choral Music, From Baroque to Classical.

Sponsored by the ELCA NW WA Synod Team Russia Committee and the OHLC Kazan, Russia Partnership Committee, the concert is open to the public. In these difficult times, the Team Russia Committee works to create a spiritual bond and special friendship between the Lutherans of European Russia and the Lutherans of Northwest Washington. Free-will donations from the concert go to support the ensemble in their tour of the U.S. west coast, and their families back home in Russia.

It became a revelation for me. We are living with blessing and sometimes don’t even know about that! I felt sorry for those Christians who are denying this blessing, looking only for the physical things, and getting disappointed when God does not give them what they wanted.

Dear Ken, I pray for you and for us to remain and to grow in this blessing of faith.

ay was the final month of preschool at His Kids, and what an exciting month it was! We started things off by preparing a special Mother’s Day gift for our moms, which was their child’s handprint made into a flower bouquet.

Our field trip for the month was to visit Miss Debbie Reetz on her farm. As she showed us around we were given items to help us remember the things we saw: an apple to remind us of her fruit trees, a wooden horse to remind us of her own horse grazing in the meadow, a real egg for all her chickens strutting around the farm, a duck feather for their cute little waddles, and a finally a cheese stick to remind us of Big Mama, the farm cow. We were so thankful for a beautiful, sunny day to enjoy being outside and to have fun at her farm!

We wrapped up the year with a special chapel time where we invited our parents to join us. We listened to Pastor Jeff’s story, sang songs, had special prayers and received our end-of-the-year certificates, with plenty of photo opportunities!

Our annual bumper bowling party with pizza was on the 18th of May at Oak Bowl, and our year-end all-school picnic at Ft. Nugent Park was on the 25th, where we said our goodbyes for the summer.

We’ve had a great year with these children and their families, and we are looking forward to next year as we are planning to brighten up the space with fresh paint and – we hope! – new carpet. The 3-day AM class is full for the fall, but we still have openings in the 3-day PM, as well as the 2-day AM. There’s also space in the Pre-K class, offered for children who are registered in one of the 3-day classes and will be entering kindergarten in the following school year.
