Growing up as Christians means studying the scriptures, so we have more than a Sunday School understanding of the Bible. It means spending time in prayer, so we might deepen our relationship with Christ. It means gathering with God’s people in worship. It means serving others. It means growing in our giving. It means striving to be guided by the Spirit in daily life, so that the fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control – might grow and mature in us (Galatians 5: 22-23, 25). God gives the growth, to be sure, but it doesn’t happen by magic. It comes through an acceptance of responsibility to practice the faith and receive the means of grace.

Oh, Grow Up!

“We must no longer be children…but speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ…”

Martin Luther, Defense of All the Articles, 1521 fter worship on a recent Sunday, a beloved member of our congregation greeted me with the words, “You have such a childish spirit!” It took me aback at first, for though her facial expression and the tone of her voice suggested appreciation and delight, the words she chose suggested more criticism than compliment. Childish spirit? Am I being told I’m immature? Sensing my confusion, she hastened to explain that what she meant was that she appreciates my sense of humor. Ah, this made more sense to me. You see, just that morning during the announcements I had joked about all of us cramming into the church bathrooms to do a blessing of our new toilets. (“O God, who created the mighty waters…”)

In June, the paraments in our sanctuary are changed to green.

They remain green throughout the summer and into the fall. This color represents growth. While many of our programs here at OHLC go on hiatus during the summer, no one should think of this as a season to take a vacation from church. Like our lawns, which seem to grow faster than we can mow them this time of year, we too are called to continue to grow! Nothing grows without water, and so we continue to return to the waters of baptism, holding fast to the promises poured over us. Nothing grows without food, and so we continue to gather together weekly around our Lord’s Table to receive the nourishment Christ provides in the bread and wine, his own body and blood. Almost nothing grows without light, and so we gather for worship each Sunday to bask in the light of Christ. Regular participation in the life of the church is essential to continued growth as mature Christians – even in the lazy days of summer.

Jesus once encouraged his disciples to become like children, whose lack of power or pretense made them “greatest” in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3-4). Jesus also said that unless one receives the kingdom of God as a child – with openness, trust, and joy – one will never enter it (Mark 10:14-15). Jesus doesn’t say anything about toilet jokes, but there are certainly some aspects of being child-like which are part and parcel of being Christian.

“Grow up!” This admonition is often heard as a criticism. It is often spoken as a rebuke of childish behavior. In the scriptures, however, the call to grow up is a gracious invitation to a deepened, more mature faith. Being a mature Christian doesn’t mean being overly serious. It doesn’t even preclude toilet jokes. (Whew!) Instead, it means taking seriously who we are as children of God by taking up the practices of faith which lead to growth in righteousness.

Be that as it may, there is a difference between being child-like in the ways Jesus describes and being childish. After all, we are called again and again in the New Testament to grow up! Growing up is a theme in First Corinthians, where Saint Paul encourages his readers to “not be childish in your thinking” (1 Corinthians 14:20). In First Peter we are encouraged to “grow into salvation” (1 Peter 2:2), and to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:18). There are many verses where we are called to maturity in faith (Ephesians 4:13, Hebrews 6:1, et al).

While Jesus does indeed call us to be child-like in some specific ways, we are called to “grow up” as mature Christians as well.

Our mission statement here at OHLC calls us all to worship, GROW, and serve for the sake of the world. May it be so for each of us, this summer and always!

High school grads to be recognized on June 7

Growing & Learning

Join us as we celebrate our high school graduates during worship on Sunday, June 7. Juliet Aspery, Clay Doughty, Alexander Famellos, Michaela Geist, Aaron Kelley, Haley Lundstrom, Kayla Nagel, and Alexander Schmakeit will all be invited to come forward to receive an OHLC-made quillow, as well as a blessing and our prayers on their behalf as they mark this milestone.

St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble from Russia returns for a concert at OHLC

All voting members of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church are encouraged to attend our semi-annual meeting, which will be held on Sunday, June 14, 9:15 to 10:15 AM in the sanctuary. We will be electing council and endowment committee members, hearing a budget update and a report from the synod assembly, and receiving reports from our ministry teams.

Written reports will be available in the narthex before the meeting. Nominations for the open council and/or endowment committee positions may be made via the Opportunity Form, or by submitting a name in the “Nominations” can on the welcome table in the narthex

he St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble from Russia returns to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 13, 7:00 PM, to present a concert of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s AllNight Vigil (Op. 37) and Russian Folk Songs.

Sponsored by the ELCA NW WA Synod Team Russia Committee and the OHLC Kazan Committee, this event is open to the public.

Free-will donations from the concert go to support the ensemble in their tour of the U.S. west coast, and their families back home in Russia.

The Team Russia Committee works to create a spiritual bond and special friendship between the Lutherans of European Russia and the Lutherans of Northwest Washington.

Excerpts from Announcements, May 25: Director for Evangelical Mission Jerry Buss on sabbatical 5/18 - 8/11 Dianne Johnson has been called to a part-time, 12 week position on the synod staff to help with coverage during Jerry’s sabbatical.

Dianne is rostered as an Associate in Ministry and previously served at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Renton. As the chairperson of our synod’s Evangelical Outreach Team, Dianne is familiar with much of the work of the DEM. She will be the person to contact while Jerry is on sabbatical. Other synod staff will also be covering aspects of Jerry’s work, so if you contact Dianne, she will either respond herself or give your message to another synod staff person who will then respond to your inquiry.

Welcome to Pastor Esau Cuevas On April 15 Pastor Esau Cuevas started a part-time call as the Coordinator for our synod’s new Ecumenical Leadership Academy. This Academy will offer courses in Spanish to equip Latino lay leaders across Western Washington. Lutheran Men in Mission and The Brotherhood of St. Bernard Saturday, June 6

Blanket Workshop Blanket Workshop meets Tuesday & Wednesday, June 2 & 3, beginning at 9:00 AM in the fellowship hall to work on quilts for Lutheran World Relief. New volunteers are always welcome; you don’t have to know how to sew to participate!

Hey you guys! Breakfast will be ready! Join us in Herrigstad Hall on Saturday morning, June 6 at 8:00 AM for Lutheran Men in Mission.

We will start with a hearty breakfast and group conversation so we can get caught up on each other’s life and times. Then we will grab our coffee and adjourn to the OHLC library to watch a video presentation of “Ten things that keep men from worship,” an irreverent look at how men participate (and don’t participate) in Sunday morning services. A couple of short skits by “The Skit Guys” will also get you laughing at some of our assumptions of about our daily life as followers of the Christ. See you there!

Nepal Area Earthquake

n May 12, a second major earthquake hit Nepal, with its epicenter about 40 miles from Kathmandu. As of May 7, gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response totaling $500,000 have been allocated to support local partner organizations Lutheran World Federation, Lutheran World Relief, and others with a well-established presence in Nepal.

The ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Relief is committed to walking with the people of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh as they navigate every part of this disaster relief and recovery process, even long after the dust settles and media attention fades. 100% of gifts received for this appeal will be used to help with immediate and long-term need.

The holiday bazaar is on the calendar for Saturday, November 14, which will be upon us much sooner than we think. . . . .

Stephen Ministry begins a new training series next month

Compassion Ministry

Stephen Ministers have been an essential part of Oak Harbor Lutheran life for many years. These congregation members maintain an active listening ear to others who are going through various struggles in their lives. Stephen Ministers support, show compassion, and model a Christ-like love to those in need.

Those interested in becoming Stephen Ministers receive training to better understand the dynamic of communication that goes on between two people. Listening, asking the right questions, and refraining from judgment or giving advice are skills that help in developing a healthy relationship between the Stephen Minister and the care receiver.

In August, we will begin a new series of training for Stephen Ministers. If you are interested and have not yet contacted one of us, just let us know and we will include you in to the training.

Ministry of the Month: SPIN Café s many members of OHLC already know, the SPIN Café is an Oak Harbor community organization dedicated to Serving People In Need (SPIN); through free meal services, volunteer opportunities, vocational training, community gathering space, resource referral, and technology access. At the SPIN Café, we recognize everyone has needs. For some it’s a warm meal, a place to rest out of the weather or get information about resources. For others, it’s a place to connect if you are lonely, new in town, or just passing through.

SPIN Café also recognizes those who have a different need; a need to volunteer, to give, to serve and to know they are contributing to the well-being of others. SPIN Café is a place for everyone to give and receive.

The SPIN Café wants to acknowledge and thank all the members of the OHLC who give to and support the café through donations of food, hygiene products, time and talents. The president/founder of the SPIN Cafe will be the guest speaker for the mission of the month forum June 7 for those who would like to learn more about this organization and to highlight the OHLC’s involvement with SPIN Café .

Watoto News Thank you seems like such a small term for all the support that OHLC has given to our neighbors in Uganda. You have helped build a house and a medical clinic and brought many smiles to that war-torn country. Many thousands of dollars’ worth of medicines have been provided to help save lives, since medical insurance is non-existent in Uganda.

Now there is a new phase of helping these neighbors. Alfred Ogwal, a Ugandan, has been working as a Clinical Medical Officer (Physician’s Assistant) in the Watoto medical clinic and working with the women and children of Living Hope in Gulu, and is known by members of our mission team. He has been accepted to Kampala International University School of Medicine. In 5 years he can return to Gulu and provide medical care to the Watoto Village, Living Hope Community, as well as the city of Gulu. With your prayers and monetary support for his tuition which we are helping to raise through this past May’s Garage Sale ($1761) and the October 17 OctoberFest at the Elks Lodge, this will come to pass over the next 5 years. These funds will allow him to complete his medical degree and to return to the clinic in Gulu and provide care for the people there. Thank you for all your past, present and future support.

Mats for the homeless: a report from The Bag Lady Many thanks to all of you who have brought in your plastic shopping bags for this project! You have done such a good job that I have eleven 60-gallon bags in my garage, filled with your contributions!

I have completed Sleeping Mat #9 – right on schedule for my planned two mats each month.

I have to catch up (sound familiar?) with the bags you have brought, so I would appreciate it if you would return to your old ways of recycling your grocery bags for the summer. As soon as I have got all the bags used, I will ask again for your support.

In the meantime, I will be at church on Thursday, June 11, in Herrigstad Hall with instructions and supplies for training new volunteers to help with this project. Please bring scissors with 7-inch blades and a size 13 (M) crochet hook.

here has the year gone!? It seemed like we were just starting the school year and here we are saying goodbye to our preschoolers for the summer. Many will be returning in the fall, but the majority of them are off to attend kindergarten in September.

The month was a short but fun-filled one! We finished the school year studying appropriately the letters Y and Z. We were able to squeeze in one more field trip, which was to 3 Sisters Farm! OHLC’s own Jennifer Muzzall Jones gave a delightful and informative tour to the preschoolers, and we learned about pigs, sheep, cows and chickens. We were able to see what the animals ate and drank on a daily basis, and she even had displays of the animals for us to finger-paint chocolate pudding onto the pigs to make them “dirty”, place wool (a.k.a. cotton balls) on the sheep, and feathers on the chickens. Thank you, Jennifer, for a great field trip, and we hope we can return again for future field trips!

We had our end of year bowling party at Oak Bowl. What a great time our preschoolers had with their family members and their friends from school, as we bowled a game and enjoyed a pizza party.

The students had their final chapel time with Pastor Spencer, and the parents were able to attend and watch their children receive their preschool certificates and they even stood patiently for their photo ops!

We concluded the year with our all-school picnic at Ft. Nugent Park. We said our farewells and waved our good-byes. Any last hugs were received with a feeling of bittersweetness, as time does seem to fly by quickly when we share these small moments with the children of His Kids.

It’s been such a great year! The staff of His Kids thanks the congregation for the faithful support.
