behavior. It is understandable and even commendable to want to “suck out all the marrow of life” (Thoreau), especially when it comes to delighting in the gift of life and the wonders of God’s creation, but all too often these bucket lists and the attitudes behind them are nothing more than a rehashed version of the nihilistic pagan maxim scolded by St. Paul: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

Counting our days

So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart.

T

hat was just mean, Pastor.” Okay, maybe choosing that tearjerker hymn “Borning Cry,” with its artful accounting of God’s faithfulness throughout life’s journey was a little much to take right after recognizing our high school graduates at worship that Sunday.

I saw several parents wiping away tears, and more than one person issued me a mild rebuke at the door out of the sanctuary for choosing such an emotional hymn to conclude that rite of blessing. You don’t need to be a parent yourself to see the swiftness of time on such stark display as those young people stand before the congregation as graduates, as adults, talking about college and careers. For many of you, no doubt, it seems like it was just a short time ago that they were in awkwardly-fitting acolyte robes, stretching mightily to reach the candles.

And wasn’t it just yesterday that they were standing up front with a red carnation pinned to their chest on their Confirmation day? Graduation might mean the end of an era in parenthood or even the emptying of the nest for some parents, but it tugs on many more heartstrings because it reminds us all that life goes by so, so fast. It is enough to induce industrial grade nostalgia, if not full-fledged panic.

The psalmist points us a better direction.

Psalm 90 is a meditation on how quickly our time on earth flies by. In light of this reality, the psalmist asks God to “teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart.” As poignant as it can be to be reminded of our numbered days, God can use such occasions to lead us to wisdom. Such reminders can push us to sift through what is really important to us. They can bring perspective and clarity. They can prompt us to live more thoughtfully, more intentionally. They can move our hearts to cherish our loved ones more deeply. The psalmist offers us something much better than the morbid narcissism of our culture, which says, “The one who dies with the most toys wins.” The psalmist teaches us to prayerfully count our days, that we might be opened up to receive wisdom from God. Such wisdom leads to meaning rather than nostalgia, to peace rather than panic.

I know the feeling. I turned 44 this year, and to mark the occasion one of my sons made a clumsy attempt at encouragement by saying, “You’re not old, dad – you’re middle-aged.” Forty-four is still considered pretty young to many of you, but being middle-aged is rather startling to me. How did that happen so fast? Three of my nephews, all of whom were either unborn or barely toddlers at our wedding 19 years ago, graduated from high school this year. I’m writing this on the last day of the school year, and it has not escaped me that my oldest is now an eighth grader. This means we have a mere five years left to shape, guide, and love him into adulthood. I don’t have time for nostalgia – only panic! No wonder my hair is turning gray!

Even more, as we count our days we can take comfort in the promise that there will be a time beyond our counting. Our Lord Jesus came to give us abundant life now, and numberless days in the life to come. As we sing in the third verse of “Borning Cry” (sorry), “When the evening gently closes in, and you shut your weary eyes, I’ll be there as I have always been, with just one more surprise.”

Life goes by fast indeed. The cliché is true: the days are long, but the years are short. As Christians we can embrace this reality with the wisdom of God, the wisdom which comes from prayerfully counting our days. Even better, we can take comfort in the promise that when our counting is done, we all have a graduation to look forward to.

The brevity of life – either the child-raising years which go by in a blur, or the whole ball of wax from cradle to grave, pushes some into self-indulgent attitudes. It has become increasingly common for people to speak of their “bucket list,” which often consists of several grandiose experiences or accumulations to achieve before one kicks the….well, you know. “YOLO” has become a catch phrase, standing for “you only live once,” and used as an excuse for all kinds of indulgent or reckless

Church Council welcomes new members At our Semi-Annual Congregational Meeting on June 14, Marge Moore, Anita Needler, and Kyle Tomlin were elected to three-year terms on OHLC’s Church Council. Josh Margraf was elected to a oneyear term as the youth representative to the Church Council. We give thanks for their willingness to serve as leaders in our congregation, and look forward to the gifts they bring.

We also give thanks for our outgoing Council members, Trudy Decker and Jeff Margraf, for their good and faithful service to our congregation.

Join us July 12 for Lynne Ogren’s ordination!

All members and friends of OHLC are invited to celebrate the ordination of Lynne Ogren to the office of pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The service will be held at 3:00 PM at OHLC on Sunday, July 12. A BBQ dinner will be served afterwards in Herrigstad Hall.

Lynne has been called to serve Zion Lutheran Church in Lewistown, Montana. Come celebrate the culmination of years of discernment, study, and preparation – much of which took place right here at OHLC. We rejoice in the opportunity to celebrate this festive occasion, and hope you will join us!

Sanctuary is graced by a new banner from Marge Moore Be sure and check out the new banner in our sanctuary, created by our own liturgical artist, Marge Moore. A white cross emerges from a set of open vertical strips, with various shades of green stretching horizontally for a bold effect. It can be seen on the south wall of our sanctuary, and is a welcome addition to the long “green season” of the church year! Thanks Marge!

A call from the nursery Annual church picnic set for 2nd of August

Help Wanted: Back-up nursery attendant

Our church picnic will be held at the Muzzall farm (938 Scenic Heights Road) on Sunday, August 2. Worship will begin at 11:00 AM with a potluck BBQ following. Please plan on bringing salads and desserts. The Anglums’ will once again be providing their mouthwatering, award-winning BBQ. We will offer an 8:00 AM service at the church for those who can’t or don’t want to attend the outdoor service.

Plan on sticking around after our potluck to enjoy fellowship and an informal cornhole tournament. Be sure to invite friends to join us for this fun day on the farm!

OHLC is looking for someone who is willing to serve as a back-up attendant in our nursery on Sunday mornings and occasionally on weeknights on an infrequent, irregular, on-call basis. Michelle and Christiane are both still serving as our nursery staff, but it would be helpful to have another person who is already background-checked, trained, and qualified to fill in when they are unavailable.

Table Fellowship Summer coffee hour

Update on Vacation Bible School 2015 I AM on the case: Investigating God’s Word!

In order to make things easier for clean-up, we’re using paper plates and paper cups for summertime coffee fellowship following worship services.

Vacation Bible School will be August 10-14 at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, 9:00 AM to noon, for children who will be entering K through 5th grade. Volunteers are needed to sign up to help for the week.

Preparation is already underway in the education wing, every Thursday from noon until 4:00 PM. Come join us and help prepare crafts and games! No experience necessary! Thursday doesn’t fit your schedule? No problem! E-mail christianeeve1@yahoo.com and we’ll come up with alternatives.

We’re still collecting empty paper towel tubes, empty cereal boxes, and magazines as materials for craft projects – there’s a donation box in the narthex.

With that in mind, we have put out some new blue recycle bins in Herrigstad Hall. They’re marked for what should go in them. There’s also a smaller blue bin near the coffee pots for your use for empty paper coffee cups.

Please try to do your part to lessen our impact on the environment and to help with OHLC’s garbage output. Our Recycle Team (Sheila Ryan and Peg Fosnaugh) appreciates your help!

If the thought of throwing away a paper coffee cup simply rubs you the wrong way, you’re most welcome to bring your own reusable cup and then take it home for washing afterwards!

If you and your group would like to sponsor a Sunday morning coffee hour, you’re certainly welcome to use the china cups and plates rather than disposables, but you must take the responsibility to wash everything and see that it’s put away afterwards.

God & Family curriculum to be offered in August `

Next month, Pastor Spencer will be offering the God & Family curriculum for children entering 4th or 5th grades and their parents. Discover how building and strengthening families can be compared to making pizza.

Study the Bible to learn about God’s recipe for living together as children of our heavenly Father. This curriculum is specifically for Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Camp Fire Girls, but is open to all families with children in this age group.

Scouts who complete the curriculum will be awarded their religious knot (which remains on your uniform throughout scouting). All who complete the program will receive the “God and Family” medallion.

Classes will be held on Thursday nights from 5:00 to 7:30 PM on August 13, 20, and 27. Dinner will be provided.

If your family is planning to attend, RSVPs are required by the 1st of August! Please send your RSVP to pastor@oakharborlutheran.org .

When was the last time you were in our church library? It’s right there at the end of the hall, next to the preschool classroom. We have a wonderful selection of fiction and nonfiction, children’s books, reference works, and several shelves of large-print books.

In the “Parish Nurse” section, we have a collection of books that offer help for senior citizens considering moving into assisted living.

These books provide answers for seniors as well as for their families.

We’ve also acquired part of a new Guideposts series, the Church Choir Mysteries. Stop by and take a look at what’s on our shelves!

Coupeville Book Group We will be meeting on Tuesday, July 7 at 7 PM (777!!) at Donna Rieb’s home, 1011 Summit Loop, Coupeville. Judy Fantauzzi will lead us in our discussion of the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry: Jonas’ world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community.

When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it’s time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

The Giver is the first book in the series written by Lois Lowry between 1993 and 2012. Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son are the other titles in the quartet.

It’s time to get ready for the Holiday Bazaar Lydia Circle is sponsoring bazaar craft workshops, starting on July 6 & 20, 6:30 PM in the education wing. This isn’t just open to Lydia Circle members – Mary Brock sends word that anyone who’s interested in participating is welcome to attend. The holiday bazaar is on the calendar for Saturday, November 14, which will be upon us much sooner than we think!

Meet Vera Tkach from Smolensk, Russia, the Youth Coordinator for the Moscow Deanery.  At the 9:30 AM worship service, there will be a blessing of Vera and the teens from Anacortes who will be going to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit, July 15-19.

OHLC celebrates twelve years of Russian partnership

I

n 2003, OHLC partnered with Evangelical Lutheran St. Katharina Church in Kazan, Russia. In 2005, nine members of OHLC traveled to Kazan to meet our brothers and sisters in Christ, as the city celebrated its 1000th anniversary.

After 83 years of use and misuse as a gym by the secret police, the building was returned to the congregation. Revived from its long non-existence, Evangelical Lutheran St Katharina’s Kazan church is working with parishioners in many ways: church services, spiritual conversations, Bible studies, seminars, lectures, spiritual work, studies at children’s Sunday School, etc. The deacon work (to help people getting into difficulties) is an important part of the community’s practical life.

The church presently has a German-Russian pastor.

Since 2003, through the generosity and support of OHLC members for various fundraisers, money has been sent for building and furnace repairs, youth, devotional books, hymnals, architect fees, work towards reconstruction of the building, audio-visual equipment, the moving and installation of the organ, repair and furnishing of the kitchen, the building of a new entrance, and most recently helping to furnish the pastor’s flat.

In 2013, St. Katharina received a grant of 30 million rubles from the government of the Tatarstan Republic, to reconstruct the church. The work finished and building restoration completed, a service of dedication was held in August 2014.

In October 2013, OHLC members Carol Lafond, Billie Tull and I traveled to Moscow with a Northwest Washington Synod group, and visited Bishop Dietrich Brauer (now Archbishop for all of Russia) and Pastor Lena Bondarenko, who were both at OHLC in May 2012. We then traveled to Kazan to visit old friends from 2005, make new friends, and see the progress on the reconstruction of the church. E-mails, the visit of the Bishop and Lena, the 2005 trip, and the October 2013 trip, remind us of the mission of the Russia Partnership program: to create a spiritual bond and special friendship between the Lutherans of Kazan, Russia, and the Lutherans of Oak Harbor. We benefit by being transformed by the knowledge that no matter what our differences are, we are all united in Christ.

Quarterly roadside pick-up comes around again There will be a roadside litter pick-up along OHLC’s adopted 2-mile stretch of Highway 20 on Saturday, July 11. Meet at church at 9:00 AM to collect your vest and hard hat and to carpool to the site north of Oak Harbor. For more information, contact Pat Dallen, 675-9452, pckkd@comcast.net .

e’re delighted to announce the birth of Svea Stroud on June 14, the second grandchild of Marc and Sue Stroud! Svea’s proud parents are Aaron and Dana Stroud of Portland, and she joins her very energetic and almost-3-year-old sister, Makea.

ike and Kathy Horrobin’s son and daughter were featured in recent articles in the Whidbey News-Times: Lucas Horrobin, a 1997 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, came up from his home in California to win the 50th annual Whidbey Golf & Country Club Men’s Invitational in May. Kirsten Horrobin Ruchaber, a 1996 OHHS graduate, coached her girls tennis team at Portland’s Jesuit High School to another 6A Girls Tennis State Championship. This was Kirsten’s 9th champion-ship in 15 years as head coach, the most in Oregon state history by a female high school coach. Both articles are posted on the bulletin board in the office hallway and may be found online in the Whidbey News-Times archives.

HLC’s own 9-year-old Mackenzie Mathieu entered a contest for K-Kids, a Kiwanis-sponsored organization for 3rd, 4th & 5th graders.

She wrote an essay on inclusiveness and gave a speech on empathy. She won 1st place for both in the Pacific Northwest region, and was entered in the international competition. She placed 3rd with her speech in the international competition and took first place with her essay, shown on the following page. Needless to say, grandmas Karen Krotz-Sperry and Anne Wheeler are very proud, as well as the whole family (and the whole church family)!

ecent visitors to worship included Jeff and Donna Gruetzmacher, from Katy, Texas, who were in town for NAS Whidbey Island’s EA-6B Prowler retirement event. The Gruetzmachers are fondly remembered as OHLC members from 1986-2000, and Donna says she’s still a loyal reader of our monthly Harbor Beacon.

It requires that you take a short training, be able to lift 30 pounds in and out of a car or off of a shelf, have a food handler’s card, and basic reading and math skills. SPIN would help you get your food handler’s card if you need help with the expense.

Please share, and encourage students to apply that may need community service. It would be a great opportunity for a reference for them. Students must be at least 12 years of age to be an official volunteer.
