The first step in giving like “The Greatest” would be to give regularly. Our grandparents and parents of “The Greatest Generation” prioritized giving as a regular habit.

They knew well the biblical concept of “first fruits,” (Exodus 23:19) giving off the top rather than from the leftovers, and consistently gave a specific portion of their income on a regular basis. It was written into their monthly budgets.

This kind of intentionality created a level of stability in church budgets which has empowered all kinds of important ministry.

Giving Like the Greatest

R

ecently our nation observed the 70th anniversary of D-Day. With it came many fawning tributes not only to those who stormed the beach at Normandy, but to the entire demographic known as “The Greatest Generation.” Tom Brokaw, who popularized the term through a bestselling book by the same name, described this generation of Americans as exemplifying values such as “personal responsibility, duty, honor, and faith.” Several D-Day anniversary news stories last month solemnly noted that as time marches on, we are losing our World War II veterans and other members of “The Greatest Generation” at a steady pace.

Those who survived D-Day and Pearl Harbor and the Battle of the Bulge are now being lost to the inevitable slings and arrows of what obituaries obliquely refer to as “natural causes.”

Another important step would be to give generously. Many in “The Greatest Generation” were taught to tithe – meaning giving a set percentage of their income to the church, often as much at 10%, in keeping with biblical precedent (Deuteronomy 14:22-26). Mind you, this is the generation which endured the deprivations of the Great Depression. Even so, they found it in themselves to give generously to the church, doing without certain luxuries for themselves so that ministry in their congregations might thrive.

The values of personal responsibility, duty, honor, and faith Brokaw attributed to “The Greatest Generation” are not just nostalgic projections. They are real and quantifiable. One place these values can be measured is in the offering plate. In church circles we’ve sometimes called this generation “The Builders,” for they built many churches during the expansion of the mainline denominations in the 1950s through the 1970s – particularly here in the West. Many congregations, including our own, were built by their blood, sweat, and tears. Just as significantly, our congregations have been sustained by their checkbooks. “The Greatest Generation” has given money to the church regularly, generously, and faithfully. And we’re losing these givers at a steady pace.

Another quality we might learn from “The Greatest Generation” is to give faithfully – or, said another way, to give with a heart full of faith. When our hearts are full of trust in God, we find we don’t need to rely on money to bring us joy, security, or peace. There will always be personal economic realities we need to tend to with responsibility and discernment, but through faith we are set free to give, trusting that our joy, security, and peace are ultimately found in Christ. Through faith, giving becomes a joyful part of a life of discipleship.

We surely stand on the shoulders of “The Greatest Generation,” but we can only ride their coattails for so long. Can we who follow them rediscover the values of personal responsibility, duty, honor, and faith?

Can we learn to give regularly, generously, and faithfully? Time will tell, but I think we can. And if we do, the future looks great.

What will happen to our congregations – including Oak Harbor Lutheran Church – as we say our goodbyes to the last of “The Greatest Generation” in the years ahead? What will the church be like without “The Builders,” those whose values of personal responsibility, duty, honor, and faith drove them to give so generously to their congregations? Are we in for an inevitable decline in our budgets and our buildings as subsequent generations focus more on directing their resources towards their own personal pursuits and pleasures?

Perhaps. But maybe not. It is still possible for the Baby Boomers, Generation X (ahem), and Millennials to start giving like “The Greatest.”

Stephen Ministry, Eucharistic Ministry, Nursing Care, and Education, Visitation, and the Prayer Chain are all services of personal attention to members and friends in the congregation who require support during times of crisis. Learn about the various aspects of our church’s caring ministries and how you can help.

August 11-15, 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon An entire week of activities, crafts, games and snacks, with daily lessons based on Jesus’ parables: the prodigal son, the lost sheep, the good Samaritan, the house built on the rock, and the sower.

Our duty and delight: Adult class considers Biblical stewardship

S

et aside some time between morning worship services on July 13, 20 & 27 for Our Duty and Delight: Understanding Biblical Stewardship in Our Lives. This 6-session video program presented by Mark Allan Powell will guide participants to a clearer understanding of what it means to be servants of God as we respond to God’s care for us.

Dr. Powell is a Bible scholar and theologian and has emphasized a Biblically informed approach to Christian stewardship. He draws from personal experience and theological insight into how we respond negatively to the word “Stewardship” and approaches the subject in a positive way that calls us to act out our purpose as God’s people, created in his image. Dr. Powell seeks to evoke a faithful and joyful response by Christians as God’s good stewards.

Mother Mentors, Whidbey Island Parents of young children need mentors! Join other community volunteers who donate time for a weekly visit over a 6-month period to help parents of young children with everything from simple tasks such as preparing a meal or reading a story to a sibling, to more demanding needs such as helping with young children. Besides providing parents with a break and stress relief, mentors learn to refer families to community resources in case of postpartum depression or other family challenges. “All the children are above average” Congratulations to OHLC youth who recently received accolades for academic achievement! Rachel Margraf was co-valedictorian and a commencement speaker for the OHHS Class of 2014. Mariah Harbaugh (entering 11th grade) was inducted into the National Honor Society, and Sydney Higgins, Elizabeth Norman, and Luke Spencer were all inducted into the Junior National Honor Society. “If one member is honored, all rejoice together” (1 Corinthians 12:26). Great job, everyone!

New ministry teams are taking shape

Join us at the church picnic on August 17!

s discussed at our semi-annual meeting in June, we are making some slight adjustments to the organization of our ministry teams.

Please note the following:

HLC’s church picnic will be held at the Muzzall farm on Scenic Heights Road on Sunday, August 17.

Worship will begin at 11:00 AM, with a potluck BBQ following. Please plan on bringing salads and desserts.

(We will offer an 8:00 AM service at the church for those who can’t or don’t want to attend the outdoor service.)

Along with our worship and potluck BBQ, we will be conducting an auction to raise funds to replenish the building fund we emptied to complete our roof and fire suppression system projects.

Please consider what item or service you might put up for auction. Think creatively! Have fun! More information will be coming soon. In the meantime, save the date and think about what you might contribute to the auction!

Our Welcome Team is a new team which will proactively seek out and welcome newcomers to OHLC. We will continue the good work of the Outreach team by sending notes to visitors, and expand this ministry to include newcomer socials, more publicity, and the purchase of OHLC swag such as pens and/or mugs.

Our Worship & Music Team will remain unchanged, save for a new job description for the coach with better defined terms and expectations.

Our Growing & Learning Team will remain also unchanged, except for a new job description for the coach with better defined terms and expectations.

Our Table Fellowship Team is a more narrowly defined version of our former Parish Life Team, solely focused on ministries and events involving food and/or the kitchen. Other Parish Life duties have been separated out and will be dealt with by individuals

The Compassion Team has been split into two teams. The new Missions Team will coordinate the various global, regional, and local mission efforts we’re involved in. The Care-Giving Team, led by Pastor Stroud, will work with our Stephen Ministers, Eucharistic Ministers, and our Parish Nurse program.

What a great congregation we have! As of Sunday, June 22, our Pentecost Appeal has brought in $8334. If you haven’t yet made a special offering to help us catch up on our budget deficit, pink envelopes will be available in the narthex throughout the summer.

Your generosity is appreciated, and is making ministry happen! We’ll keep you posted on our progress in the weeks to come.

This is more than an arbitrary rearranging of the furniture with some new names thrown in. These changes are intended to foster greater focus on the key areas to which we have committed ourselves in our mission statement: “Oak Harbor Lutheran Church welcomes all people (Welcome Team) to worship (Worship & Music Team), grow (Growing & Learning Team), and serve (Table Fellowship Team, Missions Team, Care-Giving Team) for the sake of the world.”

This summer we are recruiting coaches and team members for these teams and preparing for the new program year this fall. If you are interested in serving in a particular area, call the church office or make note of it in the Opportunity Form!

Care-Giving Ministry

uly’s ministry of the month highlights the care-giving outreach of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. This includes congregation members who have received training and have been commissioned as Stephen Ministers. They provide confidential, oneon-one listening and caring support for people in the midst of difficult times such as illness, change in life situations including divorce, death of a loved one, loss of a job and relocation, and a host of other challenges.

Eucharistic Ministers bring the elements of Holy Communion to those who are not able to attend worship services due to a variety of situations.

Volunteers on OHLC’s e-mail Prayer Chain take time in the midst of busy lives to offer prayers on behalf of concerns near and far. Our Parish Nurse provides information to support healthy lives and helps coordinate volunteers with congregation members’ needs for transportation to doctors’ appointments.

Join us for an informational forum on Sunday, July 6, 9:15 AM in the library to learn more, and be sure to take a look at the monthlong display on the bulletin board in the narthex.

In the case of an emergency (your sudden need for hospitalization, for example) where it’s important that a family member be notified, the information on these forms enable Pastor Spencer, Pastor Stroud, or the Parish Nurse to contact the people who need to know.

Blank forms are available in the Parish Nurse office; when you’ve completed one, seal it in an envelope and bring it to the church office.

e received word of the death of Duveen Haist in North Platte, Nebraska. A daughter of charter members John & Agnes Nelson (OHLC’s first meeting was in their home), Duveen was a member of OHLC for many years and continued as a financial supporter of our Blanket Workshop long after she’d moved away. Our hearts go out to her sister, Deatrice Taylor in Oak Harbor, as well as to her family and friends.

Spring shipment for Lutheran World Relief projects

HLC’s latest shipment for Lutheran World Relief consisted of 189 baby care kits, 104 personal care kits, and 51 quilts. Our sincere thanks to Thrivent, Mt. Baker Branch, for funds for quilt batting, and to Whidbey SeaTac Shuttle for the loan of the bus to transport our projects along with those from Concordia Lutheran Church to the collection site in Seattle (and thanks, Rita Carter, for doing the driving!!).

OHLC’s Holiday Bazaar It may be midsummer, but November’s on the horizon and that means the Holiday Bazaar! The women of Lydia Circle are working on projects and they’d love to have your help. Oak Harbor’s Help House celebrates Christmas in July

I

n past years, we have ‘passed the hat’ for Help House as part of their Christmas in July food drive, inviting people to take a few slips of paper from the hats listing specific items that are needed.

We’re not going to do that this year, because we’re making an ongoing collection for Help House.

We thank you for remembering to bring an item or two of nonperishable food when you come for worship on Sundays, or for a meeting during the week, or drop by when you’re on the way home from the grocery store.

Jean Weiman at Help House says she’s very proud of us for our weekly collection! To help out, she gave us some posters to put on our Help House barrels in the narthex, and these list some of the suggested items they’re looking for:

LEFSE recipe using instant potatoes (Used by permission) Katie Zimmerman obtained this recipe from the Stump Lake, North Dakota ladies, Sept 6, 2010.

Katie says the ladies in Stump Lake prepare thousands of lefse for a big annual festival. They have it down to a science, using an assembly line process.

Heat: 9 c water and ¾ c butter until butter is melted.

Mix together: 8 c Hungry Jack potato flakes (one box) ¼ c sugar 3 c dry milk 1 T salt Add: Hot water and butter

Our welltrained staff are able to offer alternatives, love, support and hope to the clients that walk through our doors and to know that God is a loving and forgiving God. They learn that we are there for them at all times throughout their journey.

Mix together by hand. Divide into four and place in plastic containers to cool, preferably overnight.

Method (When you are ready to roll):  Working one at a time with the 4 sections of potato mixture, cut each section into four pieces and set aside.  Add 1 ¼ c flour by hand to each of those potato mixture portions, working with one portion at a time. Knead on a floured board to build up gluten (but not as much as for bread making). Form into a log.  Cut the log crosswise into uniformly-sized pieces. A thicker slice will roll out to a larger lefse.  Roll each piece on a floured pastry cloth, turning a quarter turn up to five times. Turn lefse over as you roll to avoid sticking to the cloth.  The traditional way to eat lefse is with butter and sugar. Some of us enjoy lefse spread with a mixture of softened butter and brown sugar.  Be sure to eat as many as it takes to decide if it’s fit to eat!!!

OHHS Transitional students say thanks!

he students and staff of Oak Harbor School District Transition Program would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the use of your church kitchen and fellowship hall this school year. The Transition Program assists students who receive Special Education services in learning how to live, work, and recreate independently in the community. Our main focus is on employment.

Our students have greatly benefitted from using the kitchen to learn to cook meals and work on practical skills that helped many of them obtain a Washington State Food Workers Card. In addition, learning to use your commercial dishwasher is a useful vocational skill.

Please accept our thanks and appreciation for your generosity, and know that what you have generously given is not a small thing.

Hints: (For this recipe, or whatever favorite lefse recipe you use)  Do not mix the flour into the whole potato mixture all at once. Mix flour into small batches of the potato mixture. If you add too much flour at one time, the mixture will become too wet and absorb too much flour, making it impossible to roll. You’ll either end up with flat bread or a mess.  Use 2 different floured cloths; one to knead flour into the potato mixture; the other to roll out lefse. Generously flour the board or cloth for rolling on and generously flour the rolling pin sock.  Bake quickly on a griddle set at Hot.  If your lefse recipe calls for boiled or steamed potatoes, the recipe will usually advise mashing. If you also rice the potatoes after mashing it makes a smoother dough.  The instant potato recipe yields a more consistent mixture than boiled potatoes (but some people swear the taste is different).
