There are no easy answers to these questions, but Scripture does give us some insight in how to understand some of these issues theologically. First of all, Scripture teaches us that creation is good, but fallen. The powerful, illuminating poetry of Genesis 1 & 2 artfully conveys the great truth that God created this world, and called it good.

Then we get to chapter 3, where creation begins to rebel against its Creator. Following Adam and Eve’s disobedience, there is now pain in childbirth, thorns and thistles appear, and the good garden in which the humans were placed now only produces through the sweat of their labors. These accounts don’t answer all our questions about God and nature (it’s poetry after all, not science), but they do reveal something which is key for how we can understand nature: It is both good and fallen. We see nature like one sees things in a funhouse mirror – you can make out the original contours of goodness and beauty, but there is much that has become twisted and distorted.

God and nature For in Christ all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

t our 10:30 service on Sunday, June 9, we were treated to a surprise visit by two deer who frolicked in the grass just outside the picture windows in our sanctuary, leaping and bounding like dancers on a stage just as I was beginning the communion liturgy. I could see the delight in your eyes. I saw the smiles spread across your faces. I heard someone later say the people around her gasped. (And here I thought you were all getting excited about the Lord’s Supper!) I caught on to what was going on, and eventually saw the deer out of the corner of my eye. What a joy! I thought later of Psalm 150, verse 6: “Let everything that breathes praise the LORD!”

But there’s more. In Paul’s letter to the Colossians we learn that if we want to know the truth about God we can’t look to nature alone.

First and foremost, we look to Christ – for “in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell” (Colossians 1:19) . Paul goes on to proclaim the Good News that “God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things (ta panta in Greek, meaning the whole ball of wax, the entire kit and caboodle), whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross” (Colossians 1:20). All things! Perhaps this is why those deer were frolicking as I lifted up the bread and the cup, the body and blood of Christ, the fruits of the cross.

I think everyone in worship that day felt like we’d witnessed something special. And we did. Those frolicking deer were a reminder of the wondrous creativity (in the truest, most literal sense of the word) of our God. Nature has a way of lifting our eyes, and our hearts, to God, who is the Creator and Author of all life.

It was a delight to see those deer outside our sanctuary windows during worship. I hope they come back. I hope they come for the eight o’clock service sometime. It was fun to see your eyes light up in wonder and joy. But I hope even more that we can lift our eyes to those sanctuary windows each and every Sunday and see not only the nature beyond, but the cross framed between its panes. For only when we view nature through the lens of the cross can we see it with God’s eyes. Only when we view creation through the lens of the cross can we hold together its beauty and its rebellion in a single unity which has been reconciled to God.

However, just a few weeks prior we witnessed a darker side of nature. A mile-wide F5 tornado ripped through a suburb of Oklahoma City, carving a path of death and destruction. The forces at work to create this tornado, colliding masses of hot and cold air, are part of nature too. More recently, related forces have been at work driving devastating wildfires across Colorado. Nature can be cruel. Nature includes tidal waves and cancer cells and animals with vicious predatory behavior. This side of nature doesn’t lift the heart so much as it brings us to our knees.

When nature isn’t entertaining us or performing in ways that are in our best interests, we tend to ask some pretty serious questions about God. How can God let this happen? What kind of God would allow his creation to function in this way? How can a loving God be responsible for a world as callous and capricious as ours? These questions are as old as human history on this planet.

Nature can be peaceful, but only the cross gives us true peace.

May we look upon it every time we gather and gasp in wonder at the incredible love shown to us in Christ Jesus, in whom all things have been reconciled to God. - Pastor Jeffrey R. Spencer 2

OHLC’s 75th Anniversary

Summer catch-up campaign Catchup is something extra. It goes on top of things.

It is a little something on the side.

We need some “catchup” on our budget. We are behind where we need to be with our general operating budget, and need to catch up. Therefore, we are asking our members for a little extra in the offering plate this summer, on top of what you usually give.

Our goal is to “catch up” to where we need to be by Rally Sunday. We have two incentives for you. First, we have a member of the congregation who is offering $5,000.00 in matching funds in support of this campaign. If we can raise $5,000.00, our budget will be infused with another $5,000.00! Second, OHLC treasurer Carol Reafs will be giving a bottle of catchup to everyone who gives at least $50.00 to the catchup campaign as a thank you gift. This special offering can be redeemed in the fellowship hall throughout the summer.

Help your congregation’s budget and your backyard BBQ at the same time! Thanks to our matching funds donor, and to you for generously giving to the catchup campaign this summer! (Please note our roof campaign will resume in the Fall.)

n July 4, we will be assembling to walk in Oak Harbor’s 4th of July parade. There will be a truck to carry supplies and possibly a few of our Charter Family members. Everyone is welcome to walk with us! We will be wearing the blue OHLC 75th Anniversary shirts - so if you don’t have one, make sure to purchase one or just wear bright blue! We will have Pastor Spencer post our meeting time and location on Facebook and will try to have an appropriate announcement on Sundays as more is known.

Cookbooks will be available by request during the month of July. Order forms will be found in the narthex on the information desk.

Please attach payment or enclose in an envelope to allow the bookkeepers to record the money properly and to make sure your books are ordered. There are limited number of books, and we will be reserving some for the 75th Anniversary Celebration event in September.

TIMELINE: We are going to make a time line of the current members of our OHLC community. To make this possible, we need your help! Please submit a recollection of your or your family’s initial experiences with OHLC (if you can provide approximate dates, that will help us).

Photos are highly encouraged! If you have come and then moved away again, please make sure we know that too. We’d like to know how OHLC inspires your life today as well... Because the July newsletter is going to press early, Vacation Bible School hasn’t taken place yet at this writing. We are, however, anticipating an exciting week, June 24-28, with our facilities transformed into an approximation of Athens in the time of St. Paul as our kids are immersed in God’s great love for them in Jesus!

Thank you to everyone who has been sharing gifts of time and talent and helping with the preparations… and there’s probably still some last-minute scrambling going on right now to get things finished up before our doors open!

SAVE THE DATE: September 29! This day will be filled with festival worship services, Sunday School, a catered banquet (free will offering) and a program celebrating the 75 years of worship, fellowship and serving here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Adult forum continues to offer Practical Wisdom

Coupeville Book Group…

he Christian church of the 1st century was a community wholly unlike any other time in the history of the church. Charged with spreading the good news of Jesus Chris, it was at the same time in the process of discovering just what that good news meant. The early Christian church did not have a theology of Christ; it had to develop an entirely new language and theology to explain the Christian experience.

The New Testament epistles are witnesses of that beginning time, when Christians were reflecting on what the cross of Christ meant and how it applied to their everyday world as they reached out to spread the Gospel. This is their gift to us today; the epistles continue to give us wisdom for daily living out our lives in Christ.

This summer’s adult forum, Practical Wisdom: The Theology of the Epistles, focuses on Galatians, Colossians and Hebrews, part of our scheduled lectionary readings for the summer. Pastor Jay Decker and I will lead the Bible studies and provide historical, cultural, and literary background.

The OHLC men’s ministry will focus on our national and religious freedoms during several gathering opportunities in July. Thanks for taking a minute now to focus on these quotes to help celebrate our many freedoms and faith at this time in our national heritage/ history. Also, close your eyes for a minute and bring back in memory some events, stories, special services, family gatherings, fireworks displays, “Kodak Moment” photos, or art work, etc., things that renew your passion, good stewardship, pride and love for the ‘good old’ US of A.

By the way, we’re not caught up in numbers; however, we would sure like to see you!

Fond farewell he easiest part of moving is being close to our children and grandchildren. The difficult part of the move – besides the decisions that come with downsizing – is leaving Oak Harbor Lutheran Church and our brothers and sisters in Christ. This church has been part of our family since 1980, and we promise that we will be back and visit.

In Sympathy Our hearts go out to Donna Lay and her family and friends, following the June 17th death of her husband, Chris. As of this writing, further information was not yet available.

Please keep Salvador and Fatima Carvallo and their young son Adam in your prayers. Fatima’s father died in Peru in mid-June, and their grief is magnified by their distance from the rest of the family.

Thrivent coordinator sought Are you a member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans? We are seeking a Thrivent member from OHLC to serve as our Thrivent coordinator. A Thrivent coordinator serves as a liaison between our congregation and Thrivent, attending regional meetings and helping our congregation utilize Thrivent resources. As we celebrate Independence Day, let us recall St. Paul’s words to the Galatians: “You were called to freedom, brothers and sisters, only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence (Galatians 5:13 NRSV). May God enable us to use our freedom for service and the love of one another.

Compassion Ministry July’s Ministry of the Month: 10 years of Russian partnership

I

n 2003 OHLC partnered with Evangelical Lutheran St. Katharina Church in Kazan, Russia. In 2005 nine members of OHLC traveled to Kazan to meet our brothers and sisters in Christ, as the city celebrated its 1000th anniversary.

After 83 years of use and misuse as a gym by the secret police, the building was returned for use as a church. Revived from its long non-existence, Evangelical Lutheran St. Katharina’s Kazan church is working with parishioners in many ways: church services, spiritual conversations, Bible studies, seminars, lectures, spiritual work, studies at children’s Sunday School, etc. The deacon work (to help people who are getting into difficulties) is an important part of the community’s practical life. The church now has Russian pastoral interns, Igor and Yulia Dyba, with their infant son, Svyatoslav.

St. Katharina’s Lutheran Church, Kazan

Since 2003, through the generosity and support of OHLC members for various fund raisers, money has been sent for building and furnace repairs, youth projects, devotional books, hymnals, architect fees, work towards reconstruction of the building, the moving and installation of the organ, and repair of the kitchen.

This year St. Katharina received a grant of 30 million rubles from the government of the Tatarstan Republic, to reconstruct the church. The work has started, and Igor reports the grant will be enough to finish the restoration of the building. The St. Katharina church council is now discussing the possibility of building a proper pastor’s flat.

In October, OHLC members, Ken Grigsby, Carol Lafond, and Billie Tull, plan to travel to Moscow with a Synod group, and will visit Bishop Dietrich Brauer and Pastor Lena Bondarenko, who were at OHLC last year. Ken, Carol, and Billie will then travel to Kazan to visit old friends from 2005, make new friends, and see the progress on the reconstruction of the church. E-mails, the visit of the Bishop and Lena, the 2005 trip, and now the October trip, all remind us of the mission of the Russia Partnership program: to create a spiritual bond and special friendship between the Lutherans of Kazan, Russia and the Lutherans of Oak Harbor.
