our founding families built an outpost for the proclamation of the Gospel.

They planted a church. Determination indeed!

Much has changed on Whidbey Island since 1938. Oak Harbor seems to be more “churched” than many other communities in western Washington – probably because the Navy brings us a steady stream of believers from other parts of the country, which offsets the impact of the heathen Washingtonians. (I say this half-jokingly, as a native Washingtonian myself!) OHLC has grown tremendously from its humble beginnings, benefitting especially from the demographic wave of the Baby Boom in the 1950s and 1960s. Seventy-five years later we not only have a building, we have one of the largest, busiest, and most beautiful church facilities on Whidbey Island.

ak Harbor Lutheran Church is celebrating 75 years of ministry in Oak Harbor! There will be events throughout 2013 commemorating this milestone, kicking off with our Gospel Sing & Pie Social later this month. Our big gala event will be held in September. We have a committee hard at work making plans for an exciting year at OHLC. I’ve been thinking about the handful of families who started OHLC back in 1938, and what things were like for them then. Franklin D. Roosevelt was president. Adolf Hitler was making some ominous moves in Germany. The United States was just coming out of the Great Depression. Our founding families had come to Oak Harbor from North Dakota, fleeing the worst of the Dust Bowl and the economic hardship of the times. The Deception Pass Bridge was only three years old. The Navy base was still three years away from coming to Whidbey Island.

They were times of great hope and great challenge.

Maintaining and continuing the ministry of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church in the years ahead will take more of what our founding families had: determination. We will be launching a capital campaign this year for some much-needed upkeep and perhaps even expansion of our facilities. It will take determination to raise the funds needed for these projects. So far we are bucking larger trends of decline in mainline congregations as we continue to offer a vibrant, dynamic faith community which is attracting new people. However, in an increasingly secular society with more and more options for how people spend their free time resulting in fewer volunteer hours to draw from, it will take determination to continue to grow our ministries. Furthermore, the Pacific Northwest as a whole continues to be a region full of people who are largely indifferent to the Christian message. Many of our neighbors are “unchurched,” and in some cases “de-churched.” Our region has been called “the none zone,” referring to the higher percentage of people who check “none” on surveys of religious identity. It will take determination to make new disciples in this cultural context.

The quality I ascribe most to our founding families is determination. There was no Lutheran church in Oak Harbor, and they were determined to start one. They had connections to other Lutherans in the region. There was a strong partnership with the Lutheran church in Anacortes. One of our old-timers remembers going to confirmation class at Fir-Conway Lutheran, south of Mount Vernon. But these families were determined to start a church of their own, a church right here in Oak Harbor. These founding families would go on to set a record in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the time by building a church and parsonage and supporting a full-time resident pastor with only eighteen families on the church rolls. Now that’s determination.

As in 1938, these are times of great hope and great challenge.

But our founding families have bequeathed us with more than a building.

They have bequeathed us with determination – a determination born of deep, strong faith. This determination is seen in the eyes of the descendants of our founding families. It is seen in the generosity of time and treasure people offer to this congregation daily in response to the grace of God in Jesus Christ. It is in the air we breathe here at OHLC, quickly picked up by new people whose hearts are moved by the Spirit.

This determination is alive and well here at OHLC, and I am confident it will carry us into a bright future.

I’ve read a bit about the history of Whidbey Island more generally, and in one book I came across a remark that made me chuckle at the time, a remark I’ve thought of many times since. The comment was that preachers on Whidbey Island have historically had a hard time earning their supper. (You can see why I’d be interested in this remark!)

As this region was being settled, it seemed to attract people who had abandoned their Christian faith or were indifferent to it. This comment reminded me of the old joke that the reason the Rocky Mountains are white is because that’s where people dumped their church transfer papers as they moved west. The West coast generally and the Pacific Northwest in particular has always been a region with a higher percentage of religious apathy. And yet, in spite of this challenging cultural context,

Garrett who helped with music, to our accompanist Kris Bruland, to Debbie Reetz and her crew helping children put on costumes and packing up those costumes afterwards, to the indispensable Kelly & Mary Brock, to Steve Ellis who cheerfully moves furniture and scenery and generally keeps the director sane (no small task that), and to Steve’s stage crewman, Kyle Tomlin.

Thank you, too, to the Sunday School students for bravely wearing weird costumes like lamb hoods and shepherd tunics, and to those with lines: Sydney Higgins, Elizabeth Norman, Luke Spencer, Peter Spencer (the 4 ‘big’ angels), Christy Thompson and Josh Margraf as Mary and Joseph, Peter Higgins, Mary Brock and Jared Johnson as shepherds, and Delaney Geist who did the talking on behalf of all the wise people (the five Wise Geists??). And many blessings on our delightful lambs, angels and shepherds without speaking parts who nonetheless raised their voices in song!

Thanks most of all to God, for giving us such an amazing story to tell.

Growing & Learning Luth Youth News Our first Luth Youth of 2013 will be held Wednesday, January 9. We’ll kick off the new year with an Epiphany Bonfire at our firepit behind the education wing. Parents and siblings are encouraged to join us for a fun evening of fellowship around the fire. We’ll meet from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, rain or shine!

Beginning Wednesday, January 16, we will resume WOW! (Word on Wednesday). Join us for games, snacks, and a multi-media Bible study experience, 6:30 – 8:00 PM. Bring a friend!

e’ll start off our adult education in 2013 with a variety of offerings: On January 6, come learn more about Opportunity Council and their work with needy people in our community. Opportunity Council will be our Ministry of the Month for January.

On January 13, we will offer something exceedingly rare: free legal advice! Attorney Brian Stiles will be with us to give a presentation on wills and estate planning. He is a member of Bethlehem Lutheran in Sedro-Woolley, and has practiced with his father and brother since 1981.

On January 20, we will gather in the sanctuary for our Semiannual Meeting. No adult class (children’s classes will meet that day).

On January 27, our Music Ministry Coordinator and accompanist Verna Morgan will give the first of two presentations on church music.

Verna is as delightful in conversation as she is when perched on the piano or organ bench, so you won’t want to miss this class!

We’ll join over 900 other congregations across the country in offering this night of marriage enrichment through a DVD presentation featuring relationship advice from Dr. Greg and Erin Smalley and Pastor Ted Cunningham, along with comedy from Michael Jr. and music from Dove award-winning recording artist Mark Schultz.

Details are still being planned, but dinner will be served, and child care will be provided with special activities for kids. Save the date and plan on attending this fun, meaningful evening with your spouse!

ll voting members of OHLC are encouraged to attend our Semiannual Meeting, which will be held between services on Sunday, January 20, beginning at 9:15 AM. We will be voting on our congregational budget for 2013, and electing representatives to Josephine Home, Lutherwood, our Endowment Committee, and the Northwest Washington Synod assembly to be held May 16-18 in Everett. Nominations for open positions are being accepted now at the welcome table in the narthex.

The deadline for reports for the Annual Report is Monday, January 7. Please send them to Carol Wiskow in the office, office@oakharborlutheran.org. Copies of the 2013 Annual Report will be available in the narthex on Sunday, Jan. 13.

In Concert: Angeli

ocal ensemble Angeli presents their winter concert, Breath of Winter, on Friday, January 25, 7:00 PM at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. This women’s quartet combines the talents of Whidbey Island residents Cynthia Akins Fletcher, Sharon Erickson, Carol Fitzgerald and Joni Keller, with accompanists Verna Morgan and Jan Ernst.

Ministry coaches, please note: There will be a coaches’ meeting and potluck on Sunday, January 27 at 6:00 PM. All coaches of our ministry teams are expected to attend. If you cannot attend, please send a representative from your ministry team. Bring a dish to share, and be prepared to report on your ministry area. We’ll enjoy a time of conversation, planning, fellowship, food, and prayer.

Breath of Winter brings a little light in the midst of midwinter darkness. The concert introduces Joni Keller, Oak Harbor Middle School Choir teacher, as a new member of Angeli.

Free-will donations from this concert will support Hope Therapeutic Riding Center on Whidbey Island. Hope Therapeutic Riding Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is: “to empower children and adults facing special challenges – whether physical, cognitive or emotional – to discover their abilities, independent skills and explore their potential through use of our nationally accredited safe and effective equine-assisted activities and therapy.” Hope provides a positive, safe environment allowing students to enjoy their experiences while learning a sense of self-confidence that will shape the rest of their lives.

The concert is open to the public.

ark your calendar for this fellowship opportunity; there will be an old time gospel sing and pie social on Sunday, January 20 to start the 75th anniversary celebration of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.

We’ll need pie bakers (be sure to sign up on the weekly Opportunity Form in your bulletin); we’ll also need pie eaters and music (pull out that old music and practice!). We’d like a variety of pies and an even larger variety of music. Can anyone sing “A Cowboy for Jesus” or “I’ll Fly Away”?

Donations will be accepted to help the 75th Anniversary Committee with expenses during the year and also to help St. Katharina Lutheran Church in Kazan, Russia as they continue to restore their sanctuary and to help itinerant pastors in European Russia. We will begin at 3:00 PM and go until the pie or music runs out. Join us for fellowship, singing, and pie!

Lisa Clark, program director for the Island County Opportunity Council office, will be our presenting speaker on Sunday, January 6, for the 9:15 AM Sunday adult education hour. Come and learn about the efforts this crucial organization is making to aid the population of our own Island County.

The Opportunity Council is a private, non-profit Community Action Agency serving homeless and low-income families and individuals. The goal of Opportunity Council is to help people in our community learn to become self-sufficient.

A broad scope of services are offered, ranging from addressing immediate and crisis-oriented needs (such as food, emergency shelter, eviction-prevention) to longer-term programs that promote selfsufficiency (including early childhood education, home weatherization).

We hope you will take this opportunity to learn about Opportunity Council and to give them what support you can beyond your usual monthly giving to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.

Roadside pick-up results are in, and the work continues!

A finely-wrought gem that plumbs the depths of one woman’s soul, and in so doing raises salient questions about the power – and price – of faith.

We’ve tallied our results for the roadside clean-ups in 2012: 10 people participated at various times and collected a total of 44 bags of trash along our 2-mile stretch of Highway 20 north of Oak Harbor.

Whidbey’s wind and less-than-careful drivers mean the job is a continual one. Our next clean-up will be Saturday, January 12. We’ll meet at church at 9:00 AM and carpool to the site. The Second Wednesday Book Group meets at 1:00 PM in the library/fireside room on Jan. 9 to discuss Baker Towers by Jennifer Haigh: Two decades following World War II bring excitement, tragedy, and unexpected changes for the Novak children and other residents who are living in a western Pennsylvania coal mining town. They live in company houses, attend church festivals, celebrate the firemen’s parade, and have union squabbles. Haig has written a compelling story of love and loss in a company town.

Our generous students and their families brought in hats and gloves to decorate our classroom tree; these gifts were then added to the church’s Sharing Tree gifts and sent to warm the heads, hands and hearts of people in need this winter. Our Pre-K Readiness Class sorted them out and added them up: 2 scarves, 2 pairs of slipper socks, 23 hats, and 48 pairs of mittens and gloves.

We extend our deepest sympathy and offer prayers for our Lord’s comforting presence with Le Linder and her family following the death of her brother, Doug Johnson, in November.

Wait for me!

The hurrier I go, the behinder I get… Wait for me!

I

t’s a little bit frightening to look around and see how fast the pace is with a lot of folks, me included. People everywhere are scooting from one activity to another with an eye on the clock.

Is it possible to slow down now that the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations, parties, pageants, and concerts to attend, even that last minute sprint for a 70% off special are over? It can almost make one shout: “Stop the world; I want to get off.”

Words from a popular song of yesteryear say it quite succinctly: “Slow down, you move too fast. You’ve got to make the morning last.” (Repeat to yourself several times.)

Let’s take a fleeting moment to look at a healthier way to think about “wait for me.” Our guides are, of course, the Holy Scripture and the Holy Spirit.

Examples: Psalm 27:14; “Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.” Psalm 37:34; “Wait for the Lord and keep His ways.” Isaiah 40:31; …“but those who hope (wait) in the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount up like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” See also: Micah 7:7, Acts 1:4-5, Romans 8:25, and others. These are profound affirma-tions (commands) to pay heed to as “the hurrier we go the behinder we get” obscures our vision to follow Christ more, and to follow our fast-paced agenda less.

Brotherhood of Saint Bernard, January 8 & 22 The Brotherhood of Saint Bernard (a.k.a. Old Dogs and Young Pups) will start a new tradition this year. We will meet on January 8, 2013, at China City in Oak Harbor from 11:30 AM (note this time change as well!) to 1:00 PM for a great lunch/meeting with time to share a highlight of a Christmas experience at home, in the community, or in the world.

Then on January 22, we will meet in the church fellowship hall from 12:00 Noon to 1:30 PM. Note that this year we will be using the helpful discussion guidelines in our Master Builders Bible as we feast on the scriptures. Do you need a copy?

Make a new year’s resolution to be a “wait for me” part of the men’s ministries at OHLC in 2013. Come and see!

Lutheran Men in Mission, January 5 All men are encouraged to join us for our Lutheran Men in Mission breakfast on Saturday, January 5, 8:00-9:30 AM. Our featured speaker will be Bob Mitchell. Bob is a community volunteer with the Pregnancy Care Clinic in Oak Harbor, and counsels young men as they take responsibility as fathers and husbands, often unexpectedly or under difficult circumstances. He uses a curriculum entitled “Authentic Manhood,” which has been presented not only at the Pregnancy Care Clinic, but also at a variety of congregations in town, including Whidbey
