certainly didn’t want a semantics game which watered down Jesus’ words, making them more palatable to those who preferred a symbolic interpretation over a more profound spiritual reality. “This is my body, this is my blood,” were simply words to trust. Philosophical debates couldn’t improve on a divine mystery. The meaning of the Biblical text, especially given the context of the Passover and the nuances of the original Greek, was clear: Jesus is truly present in the bread and wine of his Holy Supper.

and blood of Christ are really present in the Supper of our Lord under the form of bread and wine and are there distributed and received. The contrary doctrine is therefore rejected.”

As important as the words “This is my body, this my blood” were to Luther, equally important were the words “Given and shed for you.” In the Small Catechism he says these words are “the essential thing” in the sacrament. Trusting in Jesus’ true presence in the bread and wine are important, but trusting that his sacrificial love is for you is what makes this gift of grace reach the heart. “Whoever believes in these very words has what they declare and state,” Luther writes, “namely, forgiveness of sin.”

The Lord’s Supper has been described as “eating and drinking in the Word.” This is an excellent way of describing what Lutheran Christianity teaches about the Lord’s Supper. When we share in the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper we are eating and drinking in the word Jesus spoke when he promised to be present with us. We are eating and drinking in the word Jesus spoke promising us that this meal would be a way to reconnect with him and receive his forgiveness anew. The Lord’s Supper, then, is an embodiment of the Gospel itself. In it, the Word who became flesh now becomes bread and wine so that he might give himself for us for the forgiveness of our sin.

ne of the central practices of Lutheran spirituality is regularly sharing in the Lord’s Supper. We refer to this holy meal as a “means of grace.” It is a means by which God delivers grace to hearts which are hungry for it. Like Christians from well before and well after the Reformation, Lutheran Christians have found the Lord’s Supper to be a deeply meaningful source of peace, hope, and joy in their lives.

The theology of the Lord’s Supper was a big sticking point at the time of the Reformation. On the one hand, Martin Luther and his colleagues disagreed with the Roman Catholic understanding of the bread and wine being “transubstantiated” by the priest into Christ’s literal flesh and blood. On the other hand, they also disagreed with the more radical reformers such as Swiss theologian Ulrich Zwingli, who taught that the bread and wine were merely symbols which helped people remember Christ’s sacrifice for us. The latter understanding was particularly distasteful to Martin Luther, who quipped: “I would rather drink blood with the Pope than mere wine with the Swiss.”

Lutheran doctrine regarding the Lord’s Supper is not intended to isolate ourselves from other kinds of Christians.

Rather it is to safeguard the nature of the Supper as an embodiment of the Word and as a divine mystery. It is there to help us better understand its nature as a gift – a gift in which Christ is truly present in bread and wine to pour out his sacrificial love for you.

For Luther, the plain meaning of the Biblical text was all he needed to be convinced that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper. When Jesus says, “This is my body, this is my blood,” in the gospels, Luther was content to take Jesus at his word. He didn’t need an elaborate metaphysical explanation for how priests might change the substance of bread and wine into body and blood. He

Funeral planning workshop, February 26

For all ages!

One of the most thoughtful gifts you can leave your family is a well-planned funeral which points to the good news of Christ’s victory over death. Such a plan not only eases the burden of funeral planning on your family, it can also serve as your last “testament” to your faith in Christ. Join us during the adult education hour (9:15-10:15 AM) in the library as Pastor Spencer leads a workshop on planning your funeral service.

Please note this workshop will focus on the liturgical components of a funeral or memorial service, and not the legal or logistical arrangements which need to be made. For assistance with those arrangements, see the Will & Trust Seminar OHLC will be offering on February 19.

From Baptism to the Cross A study in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians Sundays, February 5-19, 9:30-10:15 AM in the church library Continuing a 7-week study of the first 3 chapters of 1st Corinthians, this study dives into the life and times of Paul and the Corinthian church. Following the lectionary for Epiphany, we will cover the reading of the New Testament lesson for that Sunday. Hear how Paul develops a careful, foundational argument to encourage the Corinthians to show unity in the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul’s theology of the Cross is expressed in practical terms, calling his Christian brethren back to their baptismal vows.

Worship & Music February’s Ministry of the Month Help Wanted: Ushers!

Joan Flowers, head usher for 8:00 AM services, and Randy Wood, head usher for 10:30, send word that more ushers are needed in both time slots. Training will be forthcoming. If you are interested in taking on a regular, monthly assignment or would prefer to fill in as a substitute, please make a note on a Welcome to Worship insert in your bulletin. Remember, this can be a great family activity!

Holy Communion class for kids, Sunday, February 12: Pastor Spencer will be offering a class on Holy Communion for young children (preschool through 3rd grade), on Sunday, Feb. 12. This class is offered both as a preparation for first communion, and as ongoing education for children who are already receiving communion.

We’ll meet in the education wing at noon, classrooms 4&6, and be done by 1 PM. Lunch will be served. RSVP via the Opportunity section of your Welcome to Worship bulletin insert, or by e-mailing Pastor Spencer (pastor@oakharborlutheran.org .

Calling all singers and instrumentalists!

It’s time for you to step forward and offer your voice to the Lord! We have all kinds of possibilities for you, so please do not be shy. For children between grades 2 and 5 we offer a Youth Choir that meets Thursdays, 3:45-4:15 PM. They sing once a month. For older students and adults there is Morning Glory choir that meets on Thursdays, 4:15-5:15 PM, and sings twice a month at 8:00 AM services. We have a Praise Team that meets Thursdays, 5:15-6:00 PM, and they sing between one and two times a month at either service. And now we are announcing the new, revised Harbor Choir that meets Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30 PM, and sings 3 times a month at 10:30 AM services.

There is something for everyone, so contact me, Verna Morgan, for more information. If you play an instrument I would love to know that as well to help coordinate special music. Come! Give your voice to the Lord!

Youth & Family Night, February 12: S’MORE JESUS, TAKE TWO! We’ll make another attempt at having a bonfire and s’mores, on Sunday, February 12 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. If the weather is really bad, we will have an fun alternate activity planned. So mark your calendars and plan on joining us – rain or shine – for a night of fellowship, treats, and learning about how we can all have “s’more Jesus” in our lives! All are welcome!

Fat Tuesday pancake feed set for Feb. 28 Join us for a Fat Tuesday feast of pancakes and bacon cooked up by OHLC’s youth, in cooperation with the men’s group. We’ll enjoy our feast at 6:00 PM, with fun and fellowship following. You are invited to dress crazily with Mardi Gras-like attire.

Traditionally, sugar and fat are eliminated or reduced during the Lenten fast, and so our Christian ancestors would have pancake feasts to use up whatever was in their pantry before Lent began. Whatever you might give up for Lent, this is a fun opportunity to feast before the fast!

hen the subject of a sabbatical comes up in board meetings, one of the primary questions that arises is “What benefit will it offer to the church itself?”

Congregations benefit from sabbaticals in the following ways: • Congregations gain a new understanding of how well the church body can function as a whole. Churches have individuals who, given the opportunity, will share their gifts and fill in the gap. This is a proving ground for up-and-coming leaders, spiritually gifted laity and volunteers. Volunteer involvement has been found to increase as a result of a pastor’s sabbatical.

Talent show and pig roast coming to OHLC

• Congregants will often lessen their dependency on the minister. They will better understand the ongoing balance that is necessary between the work of the clergy and the work of the laity. They may realize their own need to draw closer to Christ during this extended season of pastoral leave. Having come to expect the minister to be there for them, people may discover that their dependency needs to be on God instead.

On Saturday, April 1, OHLC will be holding a Talent Show and Pig Roast (cooked by the Anglums) as a free will offering fundraiser to help the Spencer family with sabbatical-related travel expenses. Whether you tell jokes, sing songs, play an instrument, write poetry, do card tricks, or juggle kittens, you are welcome to participate in our Talent Show. (Note: Any juggling of kittens is subject to ASPCA’s strict regulations, including kitty helmets and proof of kitty consent.) It will be held on April Fools Day, so you are invited to be silly! Save the date, and in the meantime work on your act!

• Sabbaticals help retain ministers who know the flock, the community and the dynamics that have taken years to achieve. Churches can expect to see longer pastorates when sabbaticals are given. Retention of ministers goes up when a pastor and a congregation learn to care for one another. Many ministers leave their posts due to stress, unresolved conflict or a sense of burnout. Without time off and time for renewal, ministers leave exhausted, depressed and defeated. Research has shown that “the most effective, growing churches are led by pastors with a long tenure. Pastors who ‘stick with’ a church through good times and rough times gain a level of credibility and respect that allows them to challenge the church to take risks necessary for growth.”

OHLC Dinner Club reminder For those of you participating in the OHLC Dinner Club – if you haven’t had them yet, remember you should be scheduling your dinners for the January through March round of gatherings.

Pastor Spencer enjoyed hearing several good reports from those enjoying their dinners together last fall. Please let him know how your dinners are going! You can e-mail him at pastor@oakharborlutheran.org.

Endowment Committee sponsors seminar on wills and trusts

There will be a Will & Trust Seminar on Sunday, February 19, 12:00 PM in the church library, hosted by OHLC’s Endowment Committee. Presenter is Brock Stiles, a Lutheran attorney from Sedro-Woolley. Lunch is provided – please make a note on a Welcome to Worship form in an upcoming Sunday bulletin if you plan to attend; this will make it easier for those who are organizing the lunch.

We did it!

After several months of deficits in late 2016, our congregation rallied and finished the year with offerings exceeding expenses! You’ll find the December statistical report on page 19 of this newsletter. Thank you for your support of our ministry together at OHLC! Here’s to a great 2017!

Endowment Fund report

O

ur Endowment Fund bylaws stipulate that a minimum of 5% (not to exceed 10%) of the fund’s value on January shall be distributed as follows:  Minimum 20% for local community or synod ministries  Minimum 20% for ELCA Church wide ministries  Minimum 20% for programs or capital improvements within the congregation  The remaining 40% may be distributed to above areas or at the Endowment Fund Committee and Congregational Council’s discretion This year’s distribution was rounded up to just over 5%, to $12,000. In keeping with these guidelines and with the approval of the council, the following allocations will be made: $2,400 to SPIN Café $2,400 to ELCA Hunger Appeal $1,000 to Watoto Scholarship Fund $1,400 to Synod Mission Starts $4,800 to OHLC Capital Improvement Fund The ending balance for the OHLC Endowment Fund as of November 30, 2016, was $221,695.87.

This Endowment has become a strong piece of our stewardship at OHLC and has grown by living gifts and gifts from members who have passed on and want to continue their stewardship into the future. Praise God for their faithfulness! As more gifts come in, each year we will be able to process more dollars to serve locally and around the world.

Update from our offering counters

L

ate last summer and in early fall, a group of 12 people agreed to become the team which is responsible for counting/depositing the offerings donated to fund the work of our church. During that time, these people were recruited and paired up so that they could start reviewing/learning the process of counting. The process includes the recording of the amounts of donations for all the numerous activities that generate and need funds for the work of OHLC. This information is recorded on a form and reported to our bookkeeper, council president, and treasurer. These funds are deposited each week in a local bank. The pairs of counters spend about two hours each week in order to perform their task.

Our financial secretary is responsible for tracking our donations.

This is done from the information that you provide on the outside of your offering envelopes. Please make sure that you indicate the amount of any general offering and any offering that is intended for a special purpose. Please clearly indicate the purpose of any special offering. If you use an envelope from the pew rack, please provide the requested information printed on them, especially your name! The counters need the envelope information in order to do their job and the financial secretary must have it in order to provide you an accurate tax statement at the end of the year.

The responsibility – to the OHLC congregation, accepted by the people who do all of these jobs – is significant. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Women’s retreat – save the date!

f you want to see signs of winter, take a peek into our classroom!

Paper plate snowmen, polar bears adorned with crayon-colored mittens and hats, and some cute paper towel tube penguins decorate the walls. Keeping the theme of winter going, we had Miss Debbie join us and she demonstrated two science projects. We learned how snowflakes and other crystals grow, and we made our own glittery snowflakes out of craft sticks.

Time goes fast, especially when we’re watching His Kids grow, so it’s not too early to plan ahead for the next school year! Registration dates for 2017-2018 at His Kids Preschool are as follows: Wednesday, March 15, for continuing students and siblings; Wednesday, March 22, for members and regularly-attending families of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church; Wednesday, March 29, open registration begins for the community.

As we learned about Martin Luther King Jr., we decorated doves for the education wing bulletin board to remind us that God wants us to love and help others. In January we also focused our attention on our local community helpers. We welcomed visitors from the Oak Harbor Fire Department as well as the Police Department to our classroom to visit and to the parking lot where we got an up-close look at their vehicles.

They shared with us what their responsibilities are and how they are here to help us. As it happened, the Fire Department’s visit to the morning class was cut a bit short when they received an emergency call, so we got to see them leap into action and turn on the fire truck siren as they left to go help someone else. (Then they came back afterwards and finished the presentation!)

We’ll send out a letter on March 1 to notify our families.

Clothes for the Cause fundraiser collects textiles and more This year, this fundraiser is being run by Oak Harbor Christian School.

January was the start of our Special Students of the Week program for the school year! Watch our bulletin board in the hallway between the classroom doors to see their great posters and learn about our star students. In January, we celebrated Luke B., Hunter, Reign, Aaron, and Max.

Stand up and be counted, and keep on SPINning…

Defibrillator training & emergency contacts Ushers, teachers, and other interested people at OHLC are invited to be on hand for the next training class for use of the church’s defibrillator, with Dr. Skip Lycksell, and me, your Parish Nurse. This class will be held in the library on Sunday, February 12, at about noon, following the 10:30 AM service. Contact me if you have questions; my office hours at OHLC are Thursdays from 1:00 to 3:30 PM. Emergency contact information forms at OHLC are a good idea and can be a helpful resource, especially for congregation members without family in the immediate area. These forms are confidential and kept in a secure, locked file in the parish nurse office. If you need to update your contact information or do not have a form on file with us, please stop by the church office and pick up a blank form.

olunteers are needed to serve at SPIN Café! The next time you’re in the narthex, take a few minutes and sign up on the bulletin board to the right of the sanctuary double doors and help us fill up our serving schedule at SPIN for the rest of the year.

SPIN Café – Serving People In Need – is located near the Island Transit terminal, at 658 SE Bayshore Drive, Oak Harbor.

We sometimes refer to SPIN Café as a “homeless ministry.” It is that, but it also serves people in need who have a place to live. They may be on such a tight budget that the meals they get at SPIN let them stretch their funds so they can pay rent.

And if you have been to SPIN, you know there is also community building going on there. We’ve seen people come in and greet other “guests” with big hugs and “I’m so glad to see you.”

Members and friends of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church have committed to serve food and wait tables at SPIN Café on the LAST Wednesday and Thursday of each month. (Always check the calendar – this year in May, those two days fall in different weeks!) Your service at a few of these once-a-month events will help fill out the team. We’ll be sure you get “educated” about the process, and experienced people are always there.

If you’ve not done this before, sign up and give it a try. There are some guidelines for you to take for reference – you’ll find those pages in the file folder near the sign-up sheets. Everything is posted on the narthex bulletin board in the Compassion Team section. (If you’re looking for it and end up in Herrigstad Hall, you’ve gone a little too far.)
