Facing and following the cross in daily life also means changing the way we look at things. We are often quick to see God’s hand in the blessings in our lives. God is certainly the benefactor of all our blessings, and we are right to offer our thanks and praise in response, but the cross tells us that God’s presence in our lives goes well beyond our moments of health, wealth, and happiness.

The cross tells us that when God seems most absent (“Why have you forsaken me?”), God is actually most powerfully present. Those times when we are at our most helpless, our most broken, are the very moments when God’s salvation is most profoundly at work, even though it may be hidden from us for a time. Facing and following the cross, then, means trusting in God’s power and presence not only when things are going well for us, but also when we are bearing the heaviest of crosses.

Facing and Following the Cross Then Jesus said to them all, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’

Luke 9:23 t the beginning of our Sunday morning worship services during the season of Lent, I will invite those gathered to face and follow the processional cross (with your eyes, not your feet) as the worship leaders enter the sanctuary during our gathering hymn. We will also face and follow the cross out of the sanctuary at the end of our services. We have a beautiful processional cross here at OHLC, and Lent is a good time to use it in a more intentional, visible way. Lent is a season when we focus on discipleship, on taking up our crosses and following Christ. Our use of the processional cross during this season will provide a physical, tangible reminder of Christ’s call to take up our crosses and follow him.

Facing and following the cross demands something of us, to be sure. Jesus calls us to do something, to take up our crosses and follow him. However, when we face and follow the cross we are also fixing our eyes on a gift, the gift of Christ’s sacrificial love for us. When we face and follow the cross we are meditating on a promise, the promise of forgiveness for all the many ways we fail to follow. Like the Israelites who were saved by looking at the serpent Moses placed on a pole, in looking to the cross with eyes of faith we find ourselves saved from our sin.

My hope is that in facing and following the cross in worship on Sunday, we might spend this season contemplating what it means to take up our crosses and follow Christ throughout the rest of the week in our daily lives. I hope our time in the sanctuary will tune our hearts to face and follow the cross outside of the worship service – in our homes, our relationships, our congregational life, our community, our workplaces, our world.

Join us for worship this Lent as we face and follow the cross.

Let this physical reminder enacted in our worship remind you to face and follow the cross of Christ in your daily life. May it inspire obedience to our Lord’s call to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow him.

Even more, may it inspire faith and trust in the cross he has already endured for our sake, so that you would live in the peace of his saving grace.

What does it mean to face and follow the cross in daily life? In part, it means dying to ourselves and living for the sake of others. In family life it might mean sacrificing your own desires for the greater good of your spouse and children. In congregational life it might mean being patient with and kind towards people who are different from you, people you might find difficult or disagreeable. In community life it means not just living for yourself in the cocoon of a well-appointed living room, but giving yourself in service to others, perhaps by volunteering at church, mentoring a child, or serving food to the hungry.

Facing and following the cross means living out the same sacrificial love our Lord Jesus put on display when he washed the disciples’ feet, and when he gave up his own desires in the Garden of Gethsemane to face and follow the cross before him.

Pastor Spencer enjoyed hearing several good reports from those enjoying their dinners together last fall. Please let him know how your dinners are going! Fat Tuesday pancake feed set for February 9 Come join us for a Fat Tuesday feast of pancakes and bacon cooked up by OHLC’s youth, in cooperation with the men’s group.

We’ll enjoy our feast at 6:00 PM, with fun and fellowship following. You’re invited to dress crazily with Mardi Gras-like attire.

Traditionally, sugar and fat are eliminated or reduced during the Lenten fast, and so our Christian ancestors would have pancake feasts to use up whatever was in their pantry before Lent began. Whatever you might give up for Lent, this is a fun opportunity to feast before the fast!

A free will offering will be taken for our Capital Campaign.

Join us for worship on Wednesdays this Lent!

February 10: Ash Wednesday We mark the beginning of Lent on February 10 with Ash Wednesday services at Noon and 7:00 PM. Services include the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion. Please note there will be no soup meal following services on Ash Wednesday.

February 17 - March 16: Worship & Soup Suppers We continue through the Lenten season with Wednesday gatherings for worship and a shared meal. Services will be held at Noon and 6 PM, with soup suppers following immediately. Please sign up at the display in the narthex to bring soup and/or bread or to help with set up and/or clean up.

The theme for our Lenten services this year will be:

Jesus on Trial: A Courtroom Drama Come experience an enlightening, thought-provoking, and at times even humorous exploration of Jesus’ life and ministry from the perspective of witnesses both supportive and hostile. Think John Grisham meets John the Evangelist. Don’t miss it!

Sometimes, however, we find our compassionate circle of friends is not quite enough to help us through troubled times. Sometimes it takes more. When we are going through such difficult times we may find a need for someone we can turn to as a listening, confidential ear.

Sunday mornings during Lent: Luther’s Catechism for Today

Stephen Ministers have a unique ministry within the church to provide such support.

Stephen Ministers are trained in specific listen and reflection skills to provide support care. It is most especially a ministry that maintains confidentiality and one-on-one support.

Join us in the library on Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15 for an in-depth study of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism.

Who should attend? This class is for: - Newcomers & Old Timers - Seekers and Steadfast Lutherans - the Curious and the Convinced

Sharing God’s love in Uganda

Music opportunities for the entire family abound at OHLC!

By the time this newsletter goes to press, our traveling Watoto Team members will be heading back from almost two weeks of service in Uganda. Skip Lycksell, Sarah Rodriguey, and Dave Norton (a local pharmacist) were joined there by four “experienced Watoto servants” from Florida They made a good team and helped many people. All of us on the Watoto Team are very grateful for your support and prayers!

Some of us may be absolutely amazed by the thought of Skip Lycksell texting… but it’s helped him keep in contact with those of us back home. These updates have included:  Temperatures have been in the 80s and the lines have been long – on one day they saw 120 patients.  In addition to other duties, Sarah has been playing soccer with the kids – they’ve worn out 2 soccer balls and had to buy new ones!  Sarah gave her testimony before the Living Hope women, and it was received as a very powerful witness.

If you’re inclined to want to make some music with other singers, here is your chance!

Children’s Choir for the little ones will be starting February 14 with a practice and pizza fun, and they will sing the following Sunday, February 21 at both services (Don’t worry – your family won’t have to sit through 2 entire services; the children will sing at the end of the 8 AM service and the beginning of the 10:30!).

Dates throughout the spring are March 6 & 13, April 17 & 24 and May 8 & 15. Preschool and elementary ages are invited!

Youth Choir Starting Thursday, February 11 for children in Grades 2 through 8. We will have practice on Thursdays, 3:45-4:15 PM. Dates to sing will be announced later.

Save the date: On Thursday, March 31, the Watoto Team and Oak

Morning Glory - Practices on Thursdays, 4:15-5:00 PM. This choir sings 2 Sundays a month at the 8:00 a.m. service. High School and adults invited!

Harbor Lutheran Church are delighted to sponsor the Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda, performing at the Oak Harbor High School Performing Arts Center. Plan on attending this evening of music and dance, witnessing to the power of Christ’s saving love. We will host the children of Watoto for dinner before the concert, and will also need help with housing. More information is coming soon. In the meantime, mark your calendars!

Senior Choir - Practices on Wednesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM. This choir sings 3 Sundays a month at the 10:30 service. High School and adults invited!

Praise Team - Practices on Thursdays, 5:15-6:00 PM. This team sings 1 to 2 Sundays a month at either service. High School and adults invited!

Worship can be so enhanced by our Music Ministry, so please join us!

A ministry of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church lthough no snow or extremely cold weather was in the forecast for the month of January on our little island, it didn’t stop the preschoolers from making their own snowflakes and snowmen!

In addition to that, we’ve been learning about the Artic and the Antarctic with the making of polar bears and penguins. There may be some early signs of spring out the windows, but it sure does look like winter in our classroom with all those displays of His Kids’ artwork!

In January we also have been focusing on community helpers, and we had our yearly visit from the Oak Harbor Police Department.

Officer Kretchman came to the classroom and shared about the importance of his job, and told us not to be scared of police officers as they are here to serve and protect us. We also went to visit the fire station on Whidbey Avenue, where we got a great tour of their facility and were able to see all their gear. With our focus on community helpers, we had the children make doves to remind us that God made each of us different. He wants us to love and care for each other with the talents He chose specifically for us, as we all are “helpers” in some way.

Quillows mean love for our high school graduates

MOPS February fundraiser collects textiles and more

Many years ago, someone in the congregation came up with the idea to make quillows – quilts that fold into pillows – for our graduating high school seniors. The idea was that it continued our promises made to them at baptism, a symbol of love to remind them of home and church as they were entering the outside world.

Having seen the heartwarming responses over the years, I would like to help ensure the program continues. To that end, I have made the quillows for this year’s group and will be making a video for YouTube to show the assembly process. I will also have two patterns available: One that makes just one and one that makes three.

It doesn’t take too many people to accomplish each year’s project and there are quite a few ways to contribute. For example: ♥ Make a quillow top, around 52” by 68” ♥ Make 12 12-1/2” squares for others to sash. ♥ Give money to the account or buy fabric ♥ Buy fleece. There are so many different themes that can be oriented to specific students. ♥ Offer to assemble the finished pieces.

I can happily pick up items from your home or you may bring them to a drop off event. Drop off dates are Saturdays, February 6 & 20 at the Family Bible Church parking lot (2760 Heller Road), 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. If you do find it easier to leave bags at the church for me during the week, please be sure to let me know they are there so I can pick them up quickly. My family and I usually attend the 10:30 AM service and I can pick up items from you then also. Josephine Home, Stanwood: Can You Hear Me Now? Greetings in the name of Christ, Josephine Partner Churches! This month, I am feeling really grateful and I thought that I would share this moment with you.

A recent special gift made to our Chaplaincy Department allowed us to get an Assisted Listening System (ALS)! Even though we have an excellent microphone system in our Chapel and can crank the volume up loud, we have some residents who still can’t hear and have basically stopped attending our worship services and Bible studies. With this ALS now, those residents can now hear clearly as if for the first time—you should see the joy they are able to express! They have returned to our gatherings and are sooo happy! Pictured is even a private conversation using the system – a wonderful renewal of life! I can preach my best sermon ever but if it cannot be communicated and understood it won’t do very much. Thanks for your continued support and helping us extend Christ’s hospitality.

DID YOU KNOW that Abby Chromy, our Parish Nurse, is the one who delivers our regular gifts of food to Help House? On most Thursdays, when she’s here for her Parish Nurse office hours, she (with the help of office staff or Sal the custodian) will load up the trunk of her car with the generous donations placed in the narthex collection barrel, and then take those items to Help House on Friday morning. She says the Help House staff is thankful for our ongoing support, especially since the need is ongoing as well.

Current needs at Help House are protein items, such as tuna, stew, chili, and canned chicken.
