When this is over, let’s fill our education wing back up with gloriously noisy, rambunctious children. Let’s stand in the hallway and listen to the chaos and pray for our teachers and give thanks for it all.

When this is over, let’s continue to use the skills we have learned to use technology to spread the gospel and to communicate with each other and to connect with our many diaspora OHLC fans across the country and to advance our mission as a congregation, but let’s also resist turning Christianity into something to be consumed electronically. Let us recommit to meeting together in-person frequently. Let us understand that discipleship and spiritual growth happen best in the crucible of in-person Christian community, which is difficult and beautiful and necessary.

his will eventually be over, my friends. One day, probably sooner rather than later, COVID will be behind us and we can emerge from all our protocols and restrictions to embrace life to the fullest once again. There is a lot of talk about returning to normal. I think we can do better than that. I invite you to begin to think and dream about how we can return to something even better than normal here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church when this is over.

When this is over, let us never take for granted the unveiled faces of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us notice and appreciate every smile, every revealing expression. Let us take in unmasked, unobstructed faces like we take in sunsets or great works of art, with wonder and with joy and with careful attention.

When this is over, let us sing loudly and without inhibition. Let us sloppily spray our aerosols all over each other without fear as we praise our Lord together. Let us belt out the liturgies we know by heart.

Let us sing our hymns, all the hymns, every single hymn. (Well, maybe not a couple of them.)

When this is over, let’s forgive each other for the things we said or the ways we acted when we were cranky and scared and frustrated.

This has been hard on all of us, and we’ve all had our moments when we weren’t at our best.

When this is over, let us reach out to our unchurched neighbors with the gospel of Jesus Christ. They have just been through a time when all their illusions about having control over their lives have been shattered and all their false gods have come up short. They are looking for something more solid to build their lives on. They need Christ. Let’s get over our timidness in saying his name. Let us give an account of the hope that is in us, so that they can have that hope too. Heck, let’s not wait until this is over to do this. Let’s start now.

When this is over, let us sit close to one another in the pews.

Close enough to feel the warmth of another person. Close enough to not only hear their singing, but to feel it in our bones.

When this is over, let’s go back to the ancient Christian practice of “the holy kiss” during the passing of the peace. Let’s kiss each other right on the mouth. No? Okay, then how about hugs? At the very least let’s do those warm, two-handed handshakes. Let’s respect each other’s wishes and observe all the proper boundaries, but let us remember how wonderful platonic human touch really is, and how much we need it.

When this is over, let’s not settle for what was normal before the pandemic. Let’s be changed by what we have experienced to live more fully, to love more deeply, to worship more joyfully, to share the gospel more urgently.

When this is over, let’s have communion with a good robust wine and real, delicious bread. Let’s walk away from the altar with a lingering mouthfeel of a well-aged wine strained clear, still chewing a nice big hunk of the Bread of Life. (When this is over let’s also make a donation to a moderate, trustworthy environmental group to compensate for all the little plastic presealed communion kits we’re using in the meantime.)

When this is over, God will be with us to show us the way forward. God will be there, giving us new life, just as he is doing even now.

nfortunately, COVID numbers in Island County have been creeping up, and so we will NOT be moving the 10:30 AM service into the sanctuary. Our worship schedule throughout December will remain as follows:

December 24, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Drive the loop around our church parking lot for a live Christmas pageant!

Different OHLC households will depict different scenes from the Nativity of our Lord in different sections of the property circling our parking lot.

Online midweek Advent worship

with candles and communion, December 24, 7:00 PM This is the service to attend if you want to sing! Presealed communion elements, as well as a candle and special Christmas matchbook will be provided for each car. If the parking lot fills up, overflow parking is available at the high school. The radio signal can be heard just fine from there.

In-person/livestreamed contemplative Christmas Eve service, December 24, 10:00 PM (sign up required) This service will include a soloist, candles, and communion.

This service is limited to 50 people; sign up by calling the church office.

Covid protocols outlined on our church website must be followed. This service will also be livestreamed on Facebook for viewing at home.

“Let Your Light Scatter the Darkness” Wednesdays in Advent, 7:00 PM (December 2, 9, 16, & 23) There will be no in-person midweek Advent services this year, but we will be livestreaming Holden Evening Prayer services on Facebook, with videos available on demand afterwards. Pastor Jeff will be preaching short sermons on the Isaiah lectionary readings.

Reaching out at Christmas

Help keep heads, hands and feet warm this winter!

Josephine: Each tag will list 3 items for a particular resident. You may purchase 1, 2, or all 3 items, and then return the item/s in gift bags with tissue and with the original tag attached. Please be careful to follow the directions on the tag. We hope you’ll also include a personal Christmas card for ‘your’ Josephine resident!

It looks as if this winter will be a cold one! SPiN Café and Oak Harbor Lutheran Church would like to join forces to help our homeless neighbors by presenting them with a few necessary gifts.

OHLC’s particular commitment is to provide new socks. Wool socks, to be precise. Keeping feet warm in the outdoors is critical to a person’s health and welfare. Winters on Whidbey are cold and damp, and wool socks can be a welcome assurance of warmth and comfort.

El Camino: Since it may be difficult to shop for individual gifts, we’re asking for Walmart gift cards for the families, which can be used for groceries or specific items family members may need. These cards will be distributed by their team, based on family size and need.

Take a tag from the tree and purchase a Walmart gift card in that amount, then bring the tag and gift card to the church office. A Christmas card with a greeting from you would also be nice to include!

[Please note: if you’re a member of Costco, there are some fine merino wool socks for a very good price at the Costco warehouse in Mt. Vernon.]

We’ll have a basket in the narthex for these socks, as well as a supply of tags to remind you to make these purchases!

Wrapping up the bazaar of Lydia Circle would like to thank all who answered the call Theandladies donated to our very successful, 8 annual Christmas Bazaar! We th

were so thrilled at the overall response and filled our fellowship hall with more tables than last year. Yes, things were different, but all went well.

Our greeting table in the narthex was staffed by Natalie Stone, Peg Fosnaugh, and Mary Brock, who offered attendees a disposable shpping bag, made sure they used hand sanitizer and sore masks, and would “follow the yellow brick road” (marked with blue tape). Mary was the counter, so as attendees waited their turn to enter, the others kept the conversation flowing. After shopping, participants exited by way of the back double doors in the fellowship hall.

We received so many thanks from participants for a wonderful bazaar, especially that we were able to hold it. People were impressed with our safety measures and are looking forward to next year’s.

To everyone who donated items and those who spent countless hours perfecting your crafts, we can’t thank you enough, and of course the same goes for the people who came to buy the beautiful wares.

And a BIG thank you... ...to those who helped set up beforehand and clean up afterward – especially our spouses and to Lucas & Logan Stone; ...to Pastor Jeff for the calls you made to ensure we’d be able to meet the various safety requirements to hold the bazaar; ...to Rekann, who lovingly allowed donors to leave items in her office.

His Kids Preschool:

To finish the month of November and our 5 food group focus, we did what everybody likes to do – we ate! We had our Thanksgiving feast on the 24th and talked about how each part of the meal belonged to each group. It was a great way to end the month!

T

he month of November was full of learning about healthy nutrition for our bodies. We painted paper plates with water colors to illustrate the 5 food groups and glued cut-out pictures of a food item from each group onto it. We used markers to color fruit and veggic pictures to make the colors stand out and then put in a bowl that we had cut out of brown paper. We finger-painted paper milk bottles with chocolate pudding for the dairy group and wrapped it all up by making paper “sandwiches” that contained all 5 food groups. During the month of learning about the food groups, our children also brought in canned goods to be donated to Help House. Each item was sorted into the designated bag for the particular group. With the help of our families’ generous giving, we were able to donate 80 individual items to Help House!

Ms. Debbie, our Science Lady, brought her friend Tom the Turkey to class, where he did some gobbling and ruffled his feathers.

For the Science activity during the month, we posed the question to the children, “If you left a pumpkin outside would it be able to create more pumpkins from the seeds that were left inside the pumpkin itself?” As we found out, the pumpkin didn’t create more; it just slowly decomposed and shrank into itself.

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

We learned about the letters G, T and N. Ms. Crystal, Ms. Elva’s friend, came in and painted a new scene on our classroom windows, with a goat, a nightingale and a turkey among other things. The students love seeking out all the things she has hidden on her wonderful paintings.

(It’s even fun for the adults, too!)

We have been in class for over two months now, and we want to say that our children are doing an AMAZING job with keeping their masks on during class time as well as remembering to sanitize their hands and being conscientious about keeping distance from their friends.

They are remembering to bring over the books after reading them to be wiped down before we place them back on the library bookshelf as well as handing over their used markers, scissors and toys so we can properly sanitize them. We appreciate the diligence that these little people are showing for the safety and health of all the students and teachers in the classroom.

es, the pandemic has complicated just about everything, but we still managed to send off a shipment of quilts and other items for Lutheran World Relief’s fall ingathering in October. Due to the COVID-19 protocols, the actual delivery was done by appointment and to a different location in Seattle.

The Boston Girl follows one woman’s life through a period of dramatic change.

Addie Baum is The Boston Girl, born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in the North End, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood, Addie's intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can't imagine - a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture and new opportunities for women. Addie wants to finish high school and dreams of going to college. She wants a career and to find true love.

Watching Addie Baum escape the constrictions of her upbringing, find ways through literature and work to broaden her own appreciation to broaden her own of the world, and in retrospect draw the outlines of a life fully lived is engrossing and captivating. Diamant creates a wonderful portrait of a woman who both expresses and helps create the definitive modern woman. And she does so while making the early years of the past century come to full-bodied life.

Time after Pentecost, November 9, 2020 Dear Beloveds, I would like to thank YOU for your continued generouis giving to El Camino de Emaús, even in the midsts of the stresses – financial, emotional, and other – that the coronavirus and other recent events have put on our communities.

I want to introduce myself. My name is Pastor Josh Stromberg-Wojcik (pronounced like “boy”and “chick”, the j is silent), the new pastor at El Camino de Emaús. This is my first call. My wife Marie and I moved up here from Portland on October 10, and are starting to get settled living up here in the Skagit Valley. We are living at the FirConway Lutheran Church parsonage.

She already found a job as a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher at Greenwood Tree Co-op in Mt. Vernon, and is both being challenged and enjoying continuing to educate using Waldorf methods. She and I both speak Spanish, and I’m both being challenged and enjoying jumping into leading a Spanish-speaking Lutheran worshipping community. COVID is a unique challenge that we are all facing, including at El Camino. For now we are having “Zoommisas” (Zoom masses) on Sundays.

News from Papua New Guinea OHLC’s Coupeville Worship Group has been helping Theodora Bokun, a student at Martin Luther Seminary in Lae, Papua New Guinea, with tuition costs during her senior year, and we’re happy to announce her graduation on Nov. 22! She is one of the first female students accepted at the seminary.

I hope I will get a chance to meet you in person sometime soon.
