Our relationships with each other as brothers and sisters in Christ are important to our congregational health, too. I worry that the cultural and political climate is fraying some of the bonds of our community. I worry that the upcoming election year will make this an even bigger challenge. How can we build up our relationships with one another?

How can we stay united in Christ when so many other differences between us threaten to divide us? More pie socials are perhaps a good start (I’m only half-joking.). What else can we do?

Relationships and Renewal

[Note: If the article below sounds familiar, it was also the letter Pastor Jeff provided for our June 2019 semiannual meeting report. (Blessings to you for actually reading it!) It is reprinted here for broader distribution, and because Pastor Jeff was gone on vacation for much of July.]

Our relationship with our community is of great importance as well. I enjoyed participating in the process of interviewing the candidates vying to become the new principal at Oak Harbor High School (one of whom even followed up with a visit in my office!). I look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationship with our closest neighbor here at OHLC, but we need to look further than across the street. How might we deepen our relationship with the Navy community? With community service organizations like SPIN Café?

But those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

eil Harrison, the ELCA program director for congregational renewal, is fond of saying that three things are important for congregations to become and remain vital: relationships, relationships, and relationships. He goes on to elaborate on this oftrepeated line by explaining that healthy, vibrant congregations are intentional about cultivating their members’ relationship with God, their relationships with each other within the congregation, and their relationship with the community in which they are located. How are we at OHLC doing in cultivating these relationships? Overall I would say we are doing well, but there is always room for improvement.

I agree with Neil Harrison that relationships are key to congregational vitality, and so these are the questions I will be constantly asking myself, our council, and you in the program year ahead. I invite you to join me in asking these questions, so that together we might begin to formulate some answers that will strengthen our relationships with God, with each other, and with our community. In and through all these relationships, may the LORD renew our strength as a congregation, so that we would mount up with wings like eagles, and run and not be weary.

One of the highlights of the program year for me has been teaching The Bible Project, a survey of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The strong attendance on Tuesday nights especially has made it one of the most successful new programs at OHLC in some time, and all the participants are eager to have a Tuesday night Bible study start up again in the fall. Serious and regular engagement with God’s Word is a crucial component in strengthening and deepening our relationship with God. How can we get even more people into God’s Word regularly? Worship is another important component, and yet attendance has steadily been trending downwards across denominations over the past few years. How can we get people to join us? Are you regular in your own attendance? Are you inviting others? Are you checking in on members you haven’t seen in worship in a while, letting them know they are missed?

August 21-24 Worship begins at 11 AM Picnic to follow

Dinner served at 5:00 PM Program & activities, 6:00 to 8:00 PM his year our Vacation Bible School program is being reinvented as an all-ages evening family camp. We’ll start each night with a family-style dinner, continue with multigenerational faith formation activities, games, and crafts, and conclude each night out at our fire put with s’mores and closing worship. On Friday night, those who wish can camp out on the back lawn of the church and enjoy a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning.

Registration forms are available on our website, www.oakharborlutheran.org, and on the small table near the white board in the narthex. All ages are welcome! (Minors must be accompanied by a family member, unless other arrangements are made with Pastor Spencer or Beth Stephens.)

August 9 piano concert offered as A Gift of Love

New council members and officers elected

Pianist Miloy Canete will be performing a concert at OHLC on Friday, August 9 at 7:00 PM. Miloy is the music director at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Goodyear, Arizona, where David and Candi Amarelo worship during their winter sojourns there.

In describing his motivation for performing, Miloy writes: “I have found a new desire to share my love for classical piano music – one that combines my life story, poetry, pictures, and stories about love and grace. My hope is that I can open new eyes, new ears, and hearts for classical music especially among the younger generation, while at the same time sharing life lessons.”

All are welcome. A free will offering will be received.

The following persons were elected to our church council at our semi-annual meeting in June: Judy Fantauzzi, Cheryl Mensler, Sheila Ryan, Roshel Donwen (serving a two-year replacement term), and Bill Wonner (serving a one-year replacement term).

New officers were elected in a special council meeting following the semi-annual meeting. Ron Muzzall will service as council President, Cheryl Mensler as Vice-President, Donna Aspery as Secretary, and Roshel Donwen as our Treasurer.

We give thanks for all these friends and their willingness to serve our congregation as council members. They will be formally installed on Rally Sunday, September 8.

New members received Men’s Ministry: Who let the dogs out?

On Sunday, June 23, we welcomed Matthew, Shannon, Mia, Matthew, and Maddox Ackerman as members of OHLC. We’re glad you’re here, Ackerman family!

The Brotherhood of St. Bernard (a.k.a, the Old Dogs and Young Pups) is OHLC’s men’s ministry for twice-monthly fellowship and Bible study. And now it’s time for our 5th annual summer outdoor event!  Date: Tuesday, August 13, 2019  Time: Noon to 2:00 PM

 Place: Fort Ebey State Park at the north picnic area above the trailhead to Lake Pondilla and near the convenient rest room.

Be sure to invite a friend to come with you. Drivers need to have a current Discover Pass, or $10 for a day pass. Carpool riders should meet at the church at 11:30 to caravan. Contact me if you’ll need a ride, 360-675-4739.

This is a fabulous, God-provided setting to enjoy our lunch, fellowship and Bible study. Come and see.

OHLC’s offering counters serve in pairs and usually meet after the 10:30 AM (9:30 AM summer schedule) service. The job involves processing the offerings and producing/providing a one-page, handwritten record for the financial secretary, with copies made for the council president and treasurer. Each pair works for about 2 hours once every 6 weeks (8 or 9 times per year) as the cadre of counters is currently structured. Training will be provided about the processing procedure. There is no computer work involved – that task is done by the financial secretary and the treasurer.

Congregation news Luke Spencer completes Eagle project

Chancel Choir and Jubilate Ringers: New names for a new program year!

A new privacy hedge was planted and new benches were installed in our fire pit area in June, organized and led by Luke Spencer as his Eagle project for Boy Scouts. The area was dedicated after worship on Sunday, July 7.

Luke’s project tapped into some OHLC history: The fire pit was originally created as the Eagle project of OHLC member Zach Gibbons, and Luke’s renovations were funded with memorial money given in memory of OHLC member Lyle Bull. (Some materials were supplied through generous donations from Home Depot as well.)

We will enjoy using this revitalized area of our property for our evening family camp this month, and for years to come! Luke is expected to receive his Eagle award in a special ceremony this fall.

his fall, Harbor Choir will be known as Chancel Choir and Harbor Bells will be known as Jubilate Ringers. Chancel Choir sings at our 10:30 AM service and Jubilate Ringers play the handbells at various services throughout the year.

These wonderful new names come at the suggestion of our new directors, Ron (Chancel Choir) and Jan (Jubilate Ringers) Ernst, who hope the new names will be a reminder that this music is intended to give glory to God in our worship. Rehearsals will resume in September.

Morning Glory, the choir for our 8:00 AM service, will be resuming rehearsals in September as well. New singers and ringers are always welcome!

Sign up for silk painting fun

Sunday School resumes on September 8!

Cheryl Mensler would like to invite interested persons to take a class on the Art of Silk Painting, offered Saturday, September 14, from 10 AM to 3 PM in the fellowship hall at church, under the guidance of her sister Georgine, a renowned silk artist. Georgine, owner of Lisa Archer Silks in Victor, Montana, teaches classes and sells her beautiful, one-ofa-kind scarves and capelets nationwide.

nother exciting program year of Christian education for all ages is about to begin! The first day of Sunday School is Sunday, September 8, starting at 9:15 AM. We will be using a great new curriculum this year! If you have any questions about Sunday School, or would like to volunteer to serve as a teacher, please contact Angela Stone or Mary Brock, our Sunday School coordinators.

The fee for this fun-filled day is $59 per person, to cover the cost of supplies.

When you finish, you’ll get to keep and wear your beautiful creation! Coffee, tea, and a light lunch will be provided. A minimum of 10 participants are needed.

Regular worship schedule resumes September 8 t’s been great to be able to worship as one church family with one service on Sunday mornings during the summer. Our blended voices have filled the sanctuary with prayer and praise, and perhaps we’ve even had the adventure of sitting in a different pew.

Mark your calendars: We will go back to two services – 8:00 & 10:30 AM – on Sunday, September 8.

Mighty to Save Ministries: Jake’s House MIGHTY TO SAVE is one of the ministries regularly supported by offerings from Deborah Circle.

It’s been seven years since Oak Harbor’s Christina Bowling answered God’s call to “offering hope and new beginnings to young adults who want to be free from addictions by providing mentoring, disciplining and transition assistance.”

In that seven years the future goal was always to open a transitional house for the young adults who needed housing after treatment. In the meantime, life skills classes, Connect Nights( a meal and conversation), Bible Study, jail visits and support groups were offered...and still are.

On June 1, MtMS opened its first transitional house, Jake’s House. Each of the men living in the house were required to complete a detailed application and be interviewed before being accepted into the program. There is also a financial commitment. Financial assistance is available which the participant makes payment towards once he has a job. House leaders Jason and Jonathan, as well as Christina and the MtSM Board, oversee the residents’ accountability to the program.

“Learning to live outside of addiction can be a bumpy road.

There are good days and bad days, but what is happening is that when someone is having a bad day, the others surround him. They share stories, they listen, they pray for each other and they encourage each other. There are times when someone hasn’t had food. The rest of the men in the house pull together and share their meals” [MtSM August Newsletter].

In answer to prayer and – as Christina said in the MtSM newsletter – “What an adventure this has been.” The adventure will continue and in the coming months I will share more about MtSM and Jake’s House.

August 13: Coupeville Book Group

Come SPIN with us: Learn more about Serving People In Need

he Coupeville Book Group will meet Tuesday, August 13, at noon in the home of Carol Reafs, 750 Pleasant Acres Lane, 360-6721232. Everyone is welcome to bring a dish to share for the potluck luncheon. The group will discuss the book I Am Not Your Negro and watch the movie of the same name. The book by James Baldwin is 108 pages; the movie, directed by Raoul Peck, is 94 minutes.

he Compassion Team emphasis for August is SPIN Café – providing free meal services, vocational training, a drop-in center, resource information, and community meeting space in the Oak Harbor area – and you’ll have several opportunities to learn more about this local outreach ministry. The bulletin board in the narthex will have a display throughout the month, and on Sunday August 18, SPIN board member (and OHLC’s own) Val Friedell will share some SPIN highlights during the worship service.

To compose his stunning documentary film, I Am Not Your Negro, acclaimed filmmaker Raoul Peck mined James Baldwin’s published and unpublished oeuvre, selecting passages from his books, essays, letters, notes, and interviews that are every bit as incisive and pertinent now as they have ever been. Weaving these texts together, Peck brilliantly imagines the book Baldwin never wrote.

In his final years, Baldwin had envisioned a book about his three assassinated friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. His deeply personal notes for the project have never been published before. Peck’s film uses them to jump through time, juxtaposing Baldwin’s private words with his public statements, in a blazing examination of tragic history of race in America.

In addition, after the service on the 18th, you are invited to our annual SPIN Celebration Brunch, 10:45 AM in the library. We plan to have special guests from SPIN Café who will share some exciting stories on SPIN happenings, and we’ll also award the OHLC Volunteer of the Year for SPIN. All are welcome, especially those of you who have volunteered at SPIN with our OHLC teams. If you plan to attend the brunch, RSVP via a yellow Connection Card in an upcoming worship bulletin. This will help our Welcome Team plan the food.

During August, your special offerings above and beyond your usual gifts to OHLC can be made by using your regular offering envelope or a mission envelope from the pew racks. Be sure to identify your gift by writing SPIN Café in the memo line of your check and marking the Special Offering line on the envelope itself.

he Second Wednesday Book Group meets on August 14 at 1:00 PM in the church library for a discussion of The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, by Lisa See: In 1988, Li-yan lives in a remote, tea-growing village in northern China. She is an Akha, an ethnic minority so isolated they didn’t learn about the One Child policy until fifteen years after it began. Her teachers realize Li-yan is very bright, but she and her family still abide by the curses, bad omens and taboos of the local culture. This is a moving novel about tradition, tea farming, and the bonds between mothers and daughters, containing several story lines and reading like a folk tale or fable.

A short film was shown at our last Josephine staff meeting, titled, See Me. It inspired these thoughts that I wanted to share with you this month: What do you see when you look at me?

Stand up for kids having summer lunches: Take a few moments to send a note or call your congressperson Summer breaks from school settings often mask a harsh reality for many children in our communities: School is the only place a child might receive a reliable meal during the day.

In fact, in the 2017-2018 school year some 22 million lowincome children across the nation were served a free or reduced-cost meal.

Thank you again for your generous support for the mission of the Pregnancy Care Center, especially through your contributions in our recent Baby Bottle Boomerang fundraiser. God’s work is never done.

Thanks to you, every day has new beginnings for our clients.

We’ve come to rely upon the foundational benefit of critical nutrition assistance in the summer months when children are away from school, such as through Summer Meal Programs. However, such funding cannot be taken for granted.

Child nutrition programs are made possible by Congress. The law allowing these programs to function expired in 2015, and since then they have operated through annual appropriations. The 116th Congress has begun the process of renewing or “reauthorizing” these programs, and our voices and input are needed to ensure these critical programs continue and are improved to better address the nutritional needs of our hungry children.

Help us make an ongoing collection of food for Help House! ou’re invited to bring a can or two of nonperishable food every week as you come to worship at OHLC! Please drop your contributions in the Help House bin in the narthex.

Our congregations, ministries and members have seen first-hand the important place of these programs in fighting childhood hunger.

Therefore, we urge renewal of child nutritional programs on a firmer foundation. In our own local community, SPIN Café receives some of these grants and provides lunches in summer for kids. Some of OHLC’s members are involved in other programs that supply lunches for kids through local Rotary Clubs.

The good people at our north Whidbey food bank send word that August’s emphasis is on food for the homeless, so they’re particularly asking for donations of single-serve items with pop tops or that are easily opened, such as Vienna sausages, tuna pouches, and cheese and crackers or crackers and peanut butter. The usual staples such as pork & beans, pasta, rice, etc., are also much appreciated.

Empty grocery bags needed – plastic or paper; just make sure they’re dry and in good condition. These may be deposited in the Help House bin.

It’s an important program and an important action for you to take. Thank you for your consideration.
