to despair over things that haven’t happened and probably never will.

(Martin Luther, who struggled with it himself, called despair a great and shameful sin.) Christianity tells the truth about me, and about you too: “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) Some find this aspect of Christianity to be overly negative, overly pessimistic about human nature. It is true that human beings can sometimes practice incredible love and kindness to other human beings, but even our most altruistic moments are tainted by self-interest and pride, making our motives less than pure. I find this truth-telling about our sin-sick souls reassuring rather than troubling. After all, effective treatment can only begin after an accurate diagnosis.

Why Church? Part 3: TRUTH

[Jesus said,] I am the way, and the truth, and the life.

John 14:6 I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.

C. S. Lewis his article concludes a three-part series dealing with reasons for staying in the church as an active participant at a time when many are leaving or are less involved. It was inspired by the podcast “Virtue in the Wasteland,” whose hosts were tired of hearing all the reasons people leave and wanted to put forth reasons why people stay. They came up with ten reasons they remain in the church as practicing Lutheran Christians, which inspired me to think of my own reasons.

I decided to write about my top three. In May I wrote about the blessings of Christian community. In the June/July newsletter I wrote about the biblical concept of peace. My number one reason for being part of the Christian church is that it tells the truth – the truth about the world, about me, and about God.

I am part of the Christian church because, best of all, it tells the truth about God. God is holy and righteous, omnipotent and eternal. God is also gracious and merciful and abounding in steadfast love. God has sent a savior to rescue us from our bondage to sin, so that sinful human beings can live in relationship with a holy God. Jesus not only speaks the truth, he embodies the truth. He is the way, the truth, and the life. His death and resurrection puts the truth about the world and the truth about God on full display, in both their stark reality and their heavenly glory. In baptism we are joined to Christ’s death and resurrection and called to a pattern of daily dying to sin and rising to new life in him. Sin remains, but the healing has begun. I can’t prove any of this. I can’t even tell you how I came to believe it, exactly. This kind of truth comes only by faith, and faith comes from God.

My number one reason

I am part of the Christian for being part of the church because I believe it tells Christian church the truth about the world. I’m is that it tells the truth not talking about the Bible being an – the truth about the answer book for every single question under the sun – the science of world, about me, creation, for instance. Christianity and about God. tells the truth about the world in a much broader sense: It was created good, but it is fallen. It is beautiful but broken. Looking at the world (nature, cultures, societies) is like looking at one of those funhouse mirrors at the carnival. You can still make out the original goodness, but it is distorted. This distortion is described in the Bible as sin, which G. K. Chesterton argued was the only part of Christian theology which can really be proven – just look at a newspaper any day of the week. The biblical account of the world as created good but having fallen into open rebellion against God rings true.

God works faith through hearing. (Romans 10:17) Thus, rather than simply lamenting the reasons people might be leaving the church, Christians would do well to articulate their own reasons for staying and being involved in the life of the church, and then be willing to share those reasons with others. As Christians we are called to “always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence.” (1 Peter 3:15-16) Community, peace, and truth are my top three reasons. What are yours? How might you articulate them to others?

I am part of the Christian church because it also tells the truth about me. It is not afraid to tell the truth about the reality of sin in my life. As it says in First John: “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” The brokenness of the world is evident in my own heart. I am selfish. I struggle to forgive. I am prone

We are excited to have Beth in this new staff position and look forward to building on our past success with Munchy Mondays and Youth & Family nights!

Sunday School resumes September 9!

Another exciting program year of growing and learning is about to begin! The first day of Sunday School is Sunday, September 9. To complete the 3-year lectionary cycle, we are continuing with another year of the Whirl Lectionary curriculum, which features fun, meaningful video vignettes followed by age-appropriate Bible studies on the scripture passages we hear that morning in worship.

If you have any questions about Sunday School, or would like to volunteer to serve as a teacher, please contact Angela Stone or Mary Brock, our Sunday School coordinators.

Farewell, Cynthia! ynthia Fletcher, our longtime choir director for Harbor Choir, is moving to Florida to be closer to family and will thus no longer continue in her position here at OHLC. Cynthia’s last Sunday with us will be August 12. She will direct the “Come Sunday Choir” that Sunday, which will meet to rehearse at 8:30 and sing at the service at 9:30. There will be a special reception with cake in her honor after worship. Please join us as we say farewell to our dear friend, our sister in Christ, and our beloved choir director.

Cynthia assures us she will be coming back regularly to Whidbey Island, so we look forward to seeing her during her visits. Ron Ernst will be directing Harbor Choir this fall.

A personal note from Pastor Jeff: I regret that I will be in Alaska visiting family on Cynthia’s last day at OHLC. I have so appreciated Cynthia’s ministry as choir director.

In choosing music she has been consistently attentive to the church year and the texts for a given Sunday, carefully selecting anthems which become an extension of the scriptures and the sermon. In addition, Cynthia has expanded our choral repertoire as she has plumbed the depths of Christian choral music, bringing us songs from a wide variety of styles and cultures.

In her directing she has pursued excellence week in and week out, coaxing music out of the choir that regularly preached to the preacher and brought me to tears on more than one occasion. In the midst of all this, she has cultivated a sense of prayerful community within the choir itself, such that Harbor Choir is its own small group where people are supported and loved in Christian community.

Come join us on August 5 in the sanctuary for a farewell concert by Angeli, featuring vocalists Cynthia Akins Fletcher, Sharon Erickson, and Carol Fitzgerald, with accompanist Jan Ernst.

For all this and more, thank you, Cynthia. I know you will continue to make beautiful music wherever you go.

OHLC Women

Women and Justice: Please join the conversation The ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ has released “Draft of a Social Statement on Women and Justice.” Your voice and response are needed!

The draft is in two sections: basic theses and fuller explanations, which speak about how sexism harms us all in church and society. The task force wants to hear from you and your community about the content of the draft and this innovative format. Find the draft, supplementary materials, information on ordering a paper copy and the response form at www.elca.org/womenandjustice . Respond to the draft on your own, study it with a group or attend a synod hearing.

Our church believes the Spirit speaks through a community of moral discernment. What are we being called to say? “We recognize patriarchy and sexism are ‘a mix of power, privilege, and prejudice.’

They prevent all human beings from living into the abundant life for which God created them,” the social statement draft says.

Opportunities for fellowship, study and service NW Washington Synodical Women’s Organization Retreat Sept. 21-23, 2018, Warm Beach Conference Center, Stanwood he site at Warm Beach has rooms that sleep 2-3 people, with private bathrooms. All rooms have a queen bed plus 2 sets of bunk beds or a trundle. Friday check in is 4:00 PM. NO dinner will be served that night, so it’s suggested you eat a late lunch. Also on Friday, our speaker Barbara Bell will give a short introduction to her weekend message, with fellowship and fun mixed in.

Saturday after breakfast begins our day of mingling, singing and several inspirational presentations with pertinent Bible study by Barbara, so bring your Bible. Lunch and dinner are provided on Saturday; snacks/cookies and coffee run ALL DAY. Sunday after breakfast we will conclude our rest and renewal with a worship service – always a sweet time for us. Retreat check-out is 11:00 AM. All registered “Retreaters” will receive another e-mail before the event, so watch for that.

A portion of our offerings will go to Skagit County Coalition Against Trafficking. They are providing someone to give us a briefing of our I-5’s onslaught (we’re not talking car congestion) and a description of their work. Compassion Ministry Ministry of the month: GO MISSIONS INTERNATIONAL

First change your life and then change the lives of others!

In August, we’ll focus on Nick and Shannon Kraft (and their kids), and the ministry of Go Missions International. “On the go” since 1998, Nick and Shannon first worked in Peru as church planters and youth ministers. Since then, they have also served in Bolivia and Chile.

Currently, they’re based in Chiclayo, Peru.

Shannon’s roots are in the Oak Harbor community, and OHLC is one of their supporting congregations.

Go Missions is a non-profit corporation with its arms extended across Latin America. They are motivated by the example of Jesus and the Great Commission to Go and make disciples, to Love and Serve at all times, and to teach others to do the same.

As Go Missions International, they hold an umbrella of grace for several Love and Serve ministries including annual CORE classes – a 6-week international internship for youth age 16 and up with an emphasis on strengthening faith and character, classes on marriage and family, children’s ministry, and support and encouragement for local pastors.

Coupeville Book Group The Coupeville Book Group will meet at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, August 7 at Carol Reafs’ house, 750 Pleasant Acres Lane (via Highway 20, south of Welcher Rd.), 360-672-1232. Lunch will be provided by Carol’s son, Curt Davis, a professional chef. Anni Campbell will lead the discussion of the book, Last Bus to Wisdom by Ivan Doig: Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother, the cook at the legendary Double W ranch in Ivan Doig’s beloved Two Medicine Country of the Montana Rockies. But when Gram has to have surgery for “female trouble” in the summer of 1951, all she can think to do is to ship Donal off to her sister in faraway Wisconsin. There Donal is in for a rude surprise: Aunt Kate is nothing like her sister. She henpecks her good-natured husband, Herman the German, and Donal can’t seem to get on her good side, either.

After one contretemps too many, Kate packs him back to the authorities in Montana on the next Greyhound. But it turns out, Donal isn’t traveling solo: Herman the German has decided to fly the coop with him. What kind of person ... would receive the care of a Stephen Minister?

Someone like Adam, who was cast out of the garden and lost everything that gave meaning to life. He needed someone to remind him of God’s love and forgiveness.

Or someone like Noah, who witnessed the destruction of everything and everyone he knew. He could have used someone to sit with him and wait for the rebirth of the earth.

Or someone like Hagar, who was abandoned along with her child and needed someone to offer hope and remind her of God’s presence.

Or someone like Abraham, who had to leave everything he knew and loved and journey to a foreign land. He could have used a good friend to hear about that journey.

Or someone like Martha, who was burdened by the demands of daily life and needed someone to help her regain sight of what was most important.

During this past Sunday School year and for the month of June, offerings and funds you donated to ELCA World Hunger and specifically to the Global Barnyard project kept adding up.

Over $5,700 was collected AND this amount will be matched by the ELCA. That’s over $10,000 to help people in the developing world. Go, Oak Harbor Lutheran!!

Our Sunday School classes worked together to choose what the Barnyard will look like: 7 piglets, 22 chicks, 2 roosters, 2 cows, 2 fish farms, 3 sets of oxen with a plow, 3 bunches of honeybees, and 7 pairs of goats plus 1 more goat. You can see that goats are very popular with the kids (or one could say that’s a pun). And that’s just with what we gave.

The match is from a set of donors who gave a total $515,000 to match gifts through the Global Farm Challenge, the primary action and learning experience leading into the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering in June.

Or someone like Mary of Nazareth, who lived with the joys and struggles of having an exceptional child and needed someone to help her sort out the ponderings of her heart.

In each case, it was God who stood by their side. That’s the mission of a Stephen Minister as well. They’re called through God’s love to support, honor, encourage and pray with people who are going through conflict, and to remind them that God is present in their lives.

The ELCA Hunger program works with church workers who are already “on the ground” in countries around the world to help people in need learn how to farm, run a business, and feed themselves and others.

Exciting things are happening in the developing world and you are part of that.

When we shared the results of your offerings with Sharon Magnuson, Associate Director of ELCA World Hunger and Disaster, who spoke at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church in June, she responded with, “Woo hoo! Way to go – and it will be matched!! Thanks so much!”

time shooting a basketball with John, or chipping a golf ball with him, or knitting with Judy, or finding something to laugh about with Alvin, or.... you fill in the blank.

not only on a daily basis but often several times during a single day because he cannot remember. People without the disease would get the initial shock once and then can journey on into the grieving process.

John, on the other hand, is stuck in an endless cycle of grief because of his disease.

May our goals not only strive to be safe but may we reach out to find the places we can thrive and have life abundantly!

The feelings I just shared with you led me to this next idea with John... if we can’t do much about helping him out of his endless cycle of grief (and don’t worry, I haven’t given up trying), could we at least find something that might give him at least a break from it? I know that this might be just a Band-Aid— and you don’t need to tell me that it borders on denial— but please know that I’m just trying to reach an existence with John that, even if temporary, is for now a bit less cruel to this fellow brother of mine in Christ.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Now, to the good part of this story. I think I may have found something. I asked John about activities that have given him joy in the past. Besides car repair, John mentioned a desire to play basketball.

John will be 91 years old this year; he is stooped over, hasn’t shot a basketball in ages, and doesn’t have enough strength to even come close to reaching a regular-sized basketball hoop. With some adjustments, and to make a long story short, John is shooting baskets, getting them in (12 in a row the other day!), and loving it! He was so happy in this short little activity that, when we were done and heading back in the building, he put his arm around me and said: “I don’t have a brother, but I want to ask you: Will you be my brother?” I don’t know if this was the right thing to do with John within the world of “Alzheimer’s research” but I can tell you that when this question reached my heart I knew that we were onto something right here. For the first time in almost five months, even though it was temporary, John finally had a moment of true relief from the grief of his loss and it was replaced by a true joy.

THANK YOU to all of you for your generous support for the Pregnancy Care Clinic’s ministry and our recent Baby Bottle Boomerang fundraiser. Comfort comes in many different forms, at different times and different reasons. Without your generosity, we could not provide God’s comfort to those in need. God bless you!
