Jesus, Our Bridge “For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human…”

1 Timothy 2:5

While most of us will sleep right through the bridge work unaffected, all the measures being taken to minimize the impact of the closure are a reminder of how dependent we are on those 1,500 feet of steel and concrete. For those of us who live on Whidbey Island and traverse the Deception Pass Bridge on a regular basis, it is so easy to take that bridge for granted as we come and go.

he image to the right is a mosaic of sorts by artist Kristen Malcolm Berry, a print of which hangs near the front door of our home. It is entitled “Jesus, Our Bridge.” You can’t see the lettering very well in the small picture, but the passage quoted above from 1 Timothy is scripted along the bottom half of the circle in the original Greek. I love all of Berry’s work, which illuminates many different New Testament texts in similar fashion, but this one is my favorite. It reminds me of our own Deception Pass Bridge, which we rely on so heavily here on Whidbey Island.

I think something similar happens to us who are regular churchgoers. It is easy to take Jesus for granted. This is especially true for those who were raised in the church. In her book Unbinding the Gospel, Martha Reese Grace describes how it is often the case that for people who grew up in the church, faith is something akin to breathing – it comes so naturally that they don’t think about it. It is just something that has always been there. While it is certainly a wonderful thing to be so immersed in Christian faith that it comes as naturally as breathing, it can also lead us to take our Bridge for granted.

The passage serving as the inspiration for this image describes Jesus as the one mediator between God and humankind. As Berry has stated in the title of her piece, Jesus is “Our Bridge.” He bridges the gap that separates us from God. His forgiveness bridges the gap caused by our sin. His sacrificial love bridges the gap caused by our hard hearts.

His resurrection bridges the gap caused by death. Because of Christ, we can live in relationship with God both now and forever. Jesus is the bridge connecting us to God, the source of all life and hope and joy and peace.

Our “bridging” as Christians happens in our baptism, when we are joined to Christ forever, crossing over from sin and death into life with God. This happens once, and never needs to be repeated. However, we are called to live in light of this reality every day for the rest of our lives. We are called into a living relationship with God, who shapes our lives in accordance with his Word and his will. We are called to live in the hope and joy and peace made possible by Jesus, our Bridge. Rather than taking this Bridge for granted, we are to cherish it each and every day. Our gratitude for this Bridge is shown through lives of devotion and discipleship.

At the time of this writing, the Deception Pass Bridge is scheduled to be closed for maintenance work for five days. While the closures are only happening at night (from 7:30 PM to 5:30 AM), it is nonetheless a major concern for those who live on North Whidbey. The Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce has been making people aware of the impending closure for weeks now. Law enforcement, emergency services, and State Park officials have all been notified so preparations

Just as the Deception Pass Bridge needs to be maintained, we would do well to maintain our relationship with Jesus through lives of prayer, worship, study, service, and fellowship. But the Good News for all of us is that no matter how broken our lives become, no matter how wide the gap separating us from God seems to be, this Bridge is never closed.

Child Protection Policy training offered on August 9 Pastor Spencer will be conducting a training class on Oak Harbor Lutheran Church’s Child Protection Policy, Sunday, August 9 at 9:15 AM in the sanctuary. This class is MANDATORY for all VBS volunteers – if you haven’t already completed it, then we’ll need to see you there. Thanks in advance for your attendance!

Summer sermon series on Ephesians astor Spencer and Pastor Stroud will spend most of the rest of the summer preaching a sermon series focusing on the lectionary’s semi-continuous readings from Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus.

This series began on the 12th of July and continues through August 23, covering selections from each of the six chapters in Ephesians. This letter beautifully proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ, and lays out the shape of Christian life in response to the Gospel.

God and Family curriculum offered on 3 Thursdays in August Pastor Spencer will be offering the God and Family curriculum for children entering 4th or 5th grades and their parents. Discover how building and strengthening families can be compared to making pizza.

Study the Bible to learn about God’s recipe for living together as children of our heavenly Father.

These sermons will be built on one another as we make our way through the consecutive readings, but each one will stand alone as well.

So, whether you can be here every Sunday or not, come be comforted and challenged this summer by this magnificent letter!

This curriculum is specifically for Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Camp Fire Girls, but is open to all families with children in this age group. Scouts who complete the curriculum will be awarded their religious knot (which remains on your uniform throughout scouting). All who complete the program will receive the God and Family medallion.

VBS is fast approaching and I am excited to share an exciting week with our volunteers and students! “I AM” on the Case, VBS 2015, is August 10-14 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon, for children going into Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Registration forms are available online at the church’s website, www.oakharborlutheran.org, (click on the ‘GROW” tab and go to Vacation Bible School – yes, the dates are for last year’s session but the registration form is for this year!). Forms are also available on the Growing & Learning bulletin board in the narthex.

Church picnic set for 2nd of August

Sunday School observes “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday

Our church picnic will be held at the Muzzall farm (938 Scenic Heights Road) on Sunday, August 2. Worship will begin at 11:00 AM, with a potluck BBQ following. Please plan on bringing salads and desserts; the Anglums will once again be providing their mouthwatering, award-winning barbecue.

We will offer an 8:00 AM service at the church for those who can’t or don’t wish to attend the outdoor (barn) service.

Plan on sticking around after our potluck to enjoy fellowship and an informal cornhole tournament. Be sure to invite friends to join us for this fun day on the farm!

God’s work. Our hands. Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

For the past two years, thousands of members from across the ELCA have dedicated one day to serve communities in ways that share the love of God with all people. The date for 2015 is Sunday, Sept. 13.

This year, Oak Harbor Lutheran Church will participate as our children’s Sunday School classes gather to assemble donated items into completed School Kits for Lutheran World Relief [see the related article on page 8]. Growing & Learning Ministry coach Mary Brock is working with Pastor Spencer to plan other Sunday School service projects for the year. Growing & Learning will be providing gold “ ’ ” t-shirts for students and teaching staff to wear on those particular Sundays.

Council & Coaches: Meeting & potluck on August 30 ouncil members and ministry team coaches will be gathering for a potluck and planning meeting on Sunday, August 30. This will be more in-depth than our usual meetings, as we review our ministries and establish goals for the coming program year. Council members please note that we will not be meeting on August 6, but will instead take care of business at this meeting before the potluck. Coaches, please note in the schedule below that you do not need to arrive until the meal begins at 6:00 PM. Everyone, please bring a dish to share!

HELP WANTED: Back-up nursery attendant

Lutheran Men in Mission… …is taking the summer off. See you in September!

OHLC is looking for someone willing to serve as a back-up attendant in our nursery on Sunday mornings and occasionally on weeknights on an infrequent, irregular, on-call basis. Michelle and Christiane are both still serving as our nursery staff, but it would be helpful to have another person already background-checked, trained, and qualified to fill in when they are unavailable. The Brotherhood of Saint Bernard… …meets on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of the month for lunch & Bible study. Because of Vacation Bible School, we’ll meet offsite at China City at 11:30 AM (note this time change, too!!) on August 11 and gather in the fellowship hall as usual at 12:00 noon on August 25.

former pastor was sometimes heard to comment that “we preach to a river at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.” He meant it especially in terms of the never-ending turnover of members and regularly-attending friends of the congregation due to military transfers, but civilian families are just as apt to be on the move. If those of us in the church office had our way, we’d keep everyone here with us forever, but we’re constantly reminded that we need to be able to share these good people with the rest of the world. Wherever their roads happen to take them, we hope OHLC has been able to help equip them for the various types of ministry in everyday life they’ll be doing in their new communities and with their new congregations.

The women of Lydia Circle are working on projects and they’d love to have your help. Literally undertaking a new ministry, we rejoiced with Lynne Ogren on the day of her ordination, July 12, surrounded by a church full of family, friends, pastors from the surrounding area (including several of OHLC’s ‘past pastors’), and a number of former OHLC members who traveled here for the occasion.

Lynne has now begun her call as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Lewistown, Montana. The church was founded in 1912 – visit the website for more information, www.zionlewistownelca.com. [Editor’s Note: Pastor Lynne! You might want to get that website updated!!!]

Blanket Workshop: Blanket Workshop meets at 9:00 AM in the fellowship hall on Tuesday &Wednesday, August 4 & 5, to make tied quilts for Lutheran World Relief.

Handwork Group: Heart & Hand handwork group meets at 9:30 AM in the prayer room on Friday, August 21. Bring your own projects, work on hats and sweaters for Lutheran World Relief baby care kits, or help assemble baptismal banners.

Melissa Johnson sent word they made it safely to Oklahoma following a road trip that took in visits to family as well as scenic spots along the way. Speaking of being equipped for ministry, she stopped by the local school district office and unexpectedly ended up with an interview, resulting in her being hired as a teacher for the coming year for K-2nd grade children with autism. It’ll be a big change, she says, since her previous teaching experience was at the high school level.

Participants will be organized into groups consisting of three households. (Families with kids will be grouped together.) Groups will then be encouraged to have dinner together three times during the program year (October through May), with each household taking a turn to host. Whoever is hosting provides the main dish, and coordinates the other members of the group in bringing side dishes. The host is also encouraged to invite a fourth household – either newcomers to OHLC or unchurched friends from the community. (If you are unable to host, but would like to participate, you are welcome to sign up. Arrangements will be made.) After the three dinners are shared, the groups are disbanded – though the relationships will surely remain! Sign up for the OHLC Dinner Club! Bon appétit!

It’s been said that “it takes a village…” On Sunday, July 12, we found out that for Lynne Ogren’s ordination, “it took a congregation”!

With God’s help, our church family hosted a fabulous event. Some of us weeded and cleaned, and set up tables and chairs and canopies. We decked the tables, baked goodies, and chopped ingredients for all the side dishes to go with the wonderful barbecue. We gathered in the sanctuary to sing God’s praises, to pray, and to witness the ordination of our good friend Lynne.

Planning and preparing were done ‘the Lutheran way’ (“As long as there’s coffee, everything’s okay!”). What a wonderful send-off, as Lynne begins leading her own flock in Lewistown, Montana!

Your help with the gathering of the scripture rocks, the making of the Luther roses, raiding of your flower gardens, and lending a helping hand where needed meant so very much! Thank you to Joanne Korengo and Anita Needler, coordinators for the food, for including and communicating with me as we prepared for the event, but especially for lending assistance where needed with set up and take down. Sara was born and raised in Litchfield, Illinois. She grew up on a second-generation dairy farm and is the youngest of six children. After graduating from high school, Sara did not attend college but went straight into having a full time job as an office administrator at a busy local steel tubing company as well as being actively involved on her father’s farm. She lived at home and worked until she married her high school sweetheart, Matt, who was stationed at that time in San Diego with the Navy. In 1996, Matt and Sara transferred to Whidbey Island and established their roots here. After attending many local churches in the Oak Harbor area over the course of several years, Sara finally found a home in Oak Harbor Lutheran Church and became a member in 2001. Sara’s history with His Kids started as a preschool parent with her older daughter, Mariah, and eventually younger daughter Sadie was a student as well. Sara was hired as the preschool’s Assistant Director in 2011 and became the Director in 2014. Sara is also employed full time outside His Kids as an office manager for a local periodontist in Oak Harbor and shares the office manager position with his second location in Bellingham. In Sara’s spare time, she enjoys gardening, looking at antiques/repurposed vintage items, a good book, riding her bicycle, camping, sewing, enjoying good food, and spending time with her family.

n past newsletters, we’ve shared the happenings of the classroom and of our preschoolers. What about the staff of His Kids Preschool? The ones who lead these little ones and do the behind scenes stuff? We thought it would be nice to share a little bit about us before the 2015-16 school year starts back up.

Elva was born and raised in the Auburn/SeaTac area of Washington. After graduating from high school, she attended Pacific Christian College, now known as Hope International University in Fullerton, CA, where she majored in Early Childhood Education. She met her husband, Bill, while in California and they moved to San Diego shortly thereafter due to Bill being stationed with the Navy. Elva’s experience started out by teaching preschool at an ELEA school in California. Shortly thereafter, they were transferred to Whidbey Island, and chose to make a home here even after Bill retired from the Navy. During the early years of raising Patrick and Justin, their two now-grown boys, Elva chose to be a stay at home mom. She helped support her family by becoming a state-licensed home day care provider, where she also did preschool. In 1999, after her youngest went off to kindergarten, Elva was offered a position here at His Kids Preschool and has been a part of the staff ever since. She’s been in the early education field now for 30 years! Some of Elva’s interests are boating, camping, gardening, road trips, and riding her horses. She also enjoys quilting and reading in her spare time.

We hope you enjoyed reading a bit about the staff of His Kids Preschool. If you know of a child who would like to be in our program, be sure to contact the church office! e do have spaces available in all of our classes, but we’re getting close to reaching our maximum number of children for our 3 day morning program. Don’t delay in registering your preschoolaged child or sharing the information to friends about the availability of our classes and program. We wouldn’t want to see a child miss out on the wonderful experience of His Kids Preschool!

Michelle was born in Great Falls, Montana, and lived there until she graduated from high school. Michelle made her way to Washington and attended Pacific Lutheran University, where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in Social Studies and a minor in Special Education. This will be Michelle’s second year as an assistant preschool teacher at His Kids. Michelle has two young children, a son (9) and a daughter (3); she is actively involved in her son’s Cub Scout troop where she was the den leader and will soon be the awards chairperson for the pack. In Michelle’s free time, she loves to read. She also enjoys crocheting, cross-stitching, baking and watching sports, and she is a huge Mariners and Seahawks fan!

It’s time to gather items for LWR School Kits! chool supply sales are underway, so we’re asking for help in stocking up on needed items for School Kits for Lutheran World Relief. The items are listed below; handy reminder sheets are also available at the welcome desk in the narthex.

August’s focus: Mighty to Save Ministries, reaching out to young adults n the world of drug addiction, there are three common outcomes: sobriety, incarceration, and/or death. Most often, the second and the third happen.

Mighty to Save Ministries was established in 2011 as a 501-c3, non-profit corporation, beginning fulltime ministry in February, 2012, with a vision and mission toward providing hope to young adults who want a new beginning, free from the addicted lifestyle.

Currently, Mighty to Save Ministries (MtSM) operates a weekly jail ministry in Island County, maintains regular communications with around 30 prison inmates, and provides transitional services to those coming out of the prison system or rehab.

As effective as these efforts have been, MtSM is positive that THE THIEF DOES NOT more could be done. We have a COME EXCEPT TO STEAL, vision of opening a Transitional AND TO KILL, AND TO Home in Island County and have been DESTROY. I HAVE COME working on this project for the last year. We want to be more than just a THAT THEY MAY HAVE safe place to live. We want to teach LIFE, AND THAT THEY our participants to live life with Jesus MAY HAVE IT MORE every day - all day. We want them to ABUNDANTLY. know that there is life outside of addiction and that Jesus can restore - John 10:10: what the enemy has stolen.

There will be a forum on MtSM in the church library during the 9:15 AM hour on Sunday, August 9, and an informational bulletin board display in the narthex throughout the month. For more details, contact at me at 360-929-2959 or go to the website, www.mightytosaveministries.org.

The website for Lutheran World Relief, www.lwr.org/ , notes they’re currently in urgent need of school kits. These reach places such as Syria, where LWR recently distributed 6,350 school kits to families affected by the ongoing conflict.

Please be sure that items are not decorated in any way with religious symbols, national flags, military symbols, or camouflage.

We’ll be collecting throughout August, and the deadline for donations is Tuesday, September 8 – watch for the donation box located in the narthex. Our Sunday School classes will be assembling kits on the following Sunday as their first service project of the year.

Donations towards the shipping fund are also much needed and greatly appreciated!

An ELCA Parish Nurse seeks to promote the understanding of the relationship between health and faith. A Parish Nurse is a personal health counselor, health educator, and liaison between the congregation and community resources.

A Parish Nurse does not perform ‘traditional’ nursing tasks such as dressing changes, administration of medication, or treatments.

The Parish Nurse will assist the pastors in making visits to hospitalized and homebound members of the congregation and will plan educational health programs. Confidentiality is strictly maintained within the scope and practice of Parish Nursing.

I’m a retired Registered Nurse, with a variety of work experience including nursing in doctors’ offices, hospitals, and research. I underwent a 2-week training course in Parish Nursing in Bellingham in 2004 and have been on the OHLC staff as a volunteer since then.

I share an office space with Pastor Stroud, across the hall from the preschool office. My hours are Thursdays, 1:00-3:30 PM and by appointment. Stop by and say hello!

ur hearts go out to those who mourn the loss of loved ones, especially to Marilyn Sherman following the June 26th death of her daughter, Karen (Sherman) Duncan in Germantown, Maryland. There was a memorial service held in Oak Harbor at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. Please keep Myrna Hummel in your prayers as well, following the death of her sister, Delores Knadler.

Donations of fresh, unopened nonperishable food items, paper products and cleaning supplies are welcomed at SPIN Café, 658 SE Bayshore Drive, Oak Harbor, to help support their free meal service.

These items include paper towels and toilet paper, hand soap, large ziplock storage bags, paper lunch bags, brown rice, dry beans, peanut butter, coffee, tea, canned tomatoes, noodles, salad dressing, seasonings, and baking mixes including gluten-free. A list is posted by the SPIN Café basket and volunteer sign-up sheets in the narthex.

Items may be dropped off at SPIN Café on Saturdays from 2:00-4:00 PM, or call 360-682-5949 to make other arrangements.

We received the news of the death of Anna Marie Larson, former member of OHLC, on July 15 in Everett. Her memorial service was held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Everett, on July 28. Anna Marie and her husband Bob were members of OHLC from about 1987 to1996. She will be especially remembered as a dynamic president of our congregation’s Women of the ELCA group and an amazing chef and hostess for many church dinners.
