But what does it mean? (That’s a good Lutheran question. Thanks for asking.) Making the sign of the cross has layers of meaning. It is a remembrance of baptism, calling to mind that we have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. It is a remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice for our sin. It is a physical way of reminding ourselves that we have been joined to Christ’s death and resurrection. It is a way to remember who and whose we are. Making the sign of the cross can be a bodily way of remembering that we are under Christ’s grace, forgiveness, and love.

In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

Can this become rote, a mere habit? Yes, of course. But that doesn’t make it bad or wrong. My wife and I kiss. A lot. Most of those kisses, though, are quick pecks – when we leave in the morning, before we go to sleep, before we drive somewhere (you never know). But as perfunctory as those pecks might be, they are a constant reminder of our love for and commitment to one another. In the same way, making the sign of the cross doesn’t need to be a spiritually ecstatic experience for it to be meaningful. Even if performed in a rote, habitual way, the repetition of this action over time powerfully inculcates a sense that we are covered by the cross, and that God’s love and commitment to us have no end.

I

n the span of one week, I had two people ask me about the sign of the cross. One was from someone who was new to the Lutheran tradition, but the other was from someone who has been an active participant in the Lutheran church for a long time. Their questions made me wonder if there aren’t many others in our congregation – newcomers and long-timers alike – who have questions about making the sign of the cross.

“Isn’t that a Catholic thing?” While neither of my questioners put it exactly this way, this is a very common objection to making the sign of the cross. My short answer is: yes, it is Catholic. So are many other aspects of Lutheran Christianity. We are an expression of Christianity which came out of Roman Catholicism, and while we reformed a heck of a lot of things, we have tried to retain as much as possible of what is good. Lutheranism is not a new sect of Christianity. We are part of the church catholic (universal). As such, we seek continuity with our Christian ancestors prior to the 16th century whenever it is helpful and doesn’t conflict with the gospel.

But how exactly do you do it? It’s easy. Traditionally you use your first two fingers and your thumb to trace the shape of the In the name and of the and of the Holy ... Spirit. cross over your upper body – of the Father... Son...

Amen. first the forehead, then the heart, then your left shoulder, then your right. Alternately, you can trace the shape of the cross on your forehead using the same pattern. In the liturgy, the sign of the cross is often made whenever the Trinity is invoked, such as before confession and at the benediction. Many people also make the sign of the cross after receiving communion. Some even dip their hands in the baptismal font and make the sign of the cross with water. You may have noticed that Pastor Stroud often does this, while I do not. I appreciate the symbolism, but I am distracted by the wetness on my head and fingers when I’m trying to lead worship. Different strokes for different folks.

And making the sign of the cross goes way back in Christian history. In the third century, Tertullian wrote, “At every forward step and movement, at every going in and out, when we put on our clothes and shoes, when we bathe, when we sit at table, when we light the lamps, on couch, on seat, in all the ordinary actions of daily life, we trace upon the forehead the sign.” That seems like a little much to me, but it is evidence that Christians were enthusiastically making the sign of the cross very early in the life of the church.

What many Lutheran Christians don’t realize is that Martin Luther himself encouraged making the sign of the cross, albeit not as frequently as Brother Tertullian. In the Small Catechism Luther recommends making the sign of the cross every morning when you get out of bed and every night before you go to sleep. This is not some obscure, off-hand comment from Luther. It is in the Catechism, which he wanted every Lutheran Christian to memorize! So, while making the sign of the cross is Catholic, it is also very Lutheran.

This is a matter of Christian freedom. People who make the sign of the cross are not more spiritual than those who do not. Making the sign of the cross does not make one more, or less, Lutheran. No one should feel obligated to make the sign of the cross, or ashamed for doing so. Our salvation comes from the cross, not from the sign of the cross.

We are looking for a team of worship leaders who could help out on the second Sunday of each month, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. April 1: Easter Sunday worship Join us on Easter Sunday as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, with festival worship services at 8:00 & 10:30 AM and vespers in Coupeville at 6:30 PM. Invite your friends and neighbors to worship with us on this day of celebration!

Easter Sunday breakfast Plan on joining us for a delicious breakfast on Easter Sunday, served in Herrigstad Hall from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. We’ll be serving egg bakes, biscuits and gravy, fruit, and more.

Thanks to Lydia Circle for preparing our breakfast, and to our Sunday School kids and their families who will be serving. A free will offering will be collected to support this summer’s Vacation Bible School program (see the VBS . article on page 6!).

April 21: New Member class Pastor Spencer will be holding a onesession workshop on Saturday, April 21 from 9:00 AM to noon for those who would like to become members of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Lunch will be provided. New members will be received on Sunday, April 22.

This spring, Pastor Spencer will be teaching a Bible study on First John, focusing particularly on our lectionary readings for the Easter season.

Come dig deeper into this short, but powerful letter, and discover the love the Father has for you! We meet in the church library on Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15 AM.

April 29 is Preschool Sunday!

Join us on Sunday, April 29 as we welcome our preschool families to worship with us at our 10:30 AM service. Our preschool students will be singing songs from chapel throughout our service, and we will enjoy cake and fellowship after worship.

Mark your calendar: OHLC at Safeco Field – Tickets are now available!

OHLC is going to a Mariners game! We have fifty seats reserved together in section 321 for the July 7th game against the Colorado Rockies. The game begins at 1:10 PM. Tickets are $13.00 each and are now available for purchase through the church office or via the Connection Card in your worship bulletin. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

We have a bus reserved to transport us to Safeco Field. Details on bus transportation will be made available when we get closer to game day. In the meantime, purchase your tickets and plan on spending a great day at Safeco Field with your friends from OHLC!

Our congregation has roles to play as well. Volunteers are necessary to ensure the week runs smoothly: • Host Family Coordinator. We will expect 5-6 Lutherwood team members for the week, from Sunday to Friday. Lutherwood requests 2 team members per host family, which brings the need for 3 host families. Team members will provide their own transportation to and from church.

• Snack Coordinator. Plan and serve daily snacks for kids and volunteers during the week, as well as coordinate daily brown bag lunches for the Lutherwood team.

• Registration Coordinator. Responsible for volunteers to check children in and out of Day Camp, Monday-Friday.

• Junior Volunteers. Approximately 5 junior volunteers to assist counselors. Must have completed 7th grade.

• Nursery Volunteers. As needed for the children of volunteers too young to participate in Day Camp.

Luth Youth to the movies On Tuesday, April 3 (spring break for the Oak Harbor & Coupeville School Districts) our Luth Youth group (7th - 12th graders) will be going to see the new movie Paul, Apostle of Christ. Time and location will be announced when the information becomes available.

Youth are asked to bring $5 towards their ticket, and additional money for any snacks they would like to purchase. Interested? RSVP to Pastor Jeff by e-mailing him at pastor@oakharborlutheran.org.

M

arch came in like a lamb, but will it go out like a lion? Only time will tell, and of course the daily weather patterns. As the children have been playing meteorologist and reporting to the teachers what the forecast is, weather has been just a small part of what we’ve been learning this month in our busy little classroom.

S.Y.E. Photography took photos of the classes as well as individual shots for memory keepers for our preschool families. One couldn’t help but smile big for some of the photos that were taken! We ended the month with a joyful Easter celebration. Our classroom will be closed the first week of April in observance of spring break.

Spring has definitely sprung! One of spring’s sure signs was Ms. Debbie, our Science lady, bringing in baby chicks and a duckling. We learned about how they grow in an egg and make their way out of it by hatching. Did you know that chickens grow up faster than ducks? She also brought a number of her rabbits, from itty bitty to giant! It was a “rabbit-palooza” in the classroom – what a fun day that was!

March’s Special Students were Cesar, Joshua, Enelia, and Graham in the morning class, and Mallory, Oliver, Sharon, and Abigail G in the afternoon class. We hope you’re remembering to check the bulletin board outside the classroom door and see their great posters!

As we close out March and look ahead to April, we are reserving spots for the 2018/2019 His Kids school year! Hope to see you at registration time, or you can contact the church office for further information of availability and class times.

Planes, trains and automobiles – sounds like a good movie, but actually it’s been transportation month here at preschool! We learned about different types of transportation, and how we can get from one area to the next. Art projects included submarines for water, hot air balloons for air, and trains for land, and we had a visit to our parking lot by North Whidbey Fire & Rescue, where we got to climb aboard their rescue boat.

March’s field trip consisted of a Whidbey SeaTac Shuttle bus coming by, driven by Rita Carter of OHLC, and picking up the children to go to Dairy Queen for a treat! OHLC’s own Becky Peattie greeted the children, gave them a quick tour and then a choice of either vanilla or a chocolate ice cream cone. Both of these ladies are a sweet blessing to us at His Kids and their willingness to serve our little ministry. Thank you!

Preschool Sunday will be April 29, when we’ll welcome our students and families to the 10:30 AM service. The students will sing during worship service and there will be a special fellowship time afterwards.

Compassion Ministry

Items will be gathered in April for Lutheran World Relief Give hope through a bar of soap! Personal Care Kits are shared with people who have lost everything from a natural disaster or life-threatening violence. We’ll be collecting items during April for these kits, which will be added to our shipment for Lutheran World Relief along with quilts, layettes and school kits. Donations of items may be placed in the collection bin in the narthex. Monetary gifts may be placed in the offering plate or dropped off at the church office.

Heavy duty combs and nail clippers have been ordered in bulk.

Donations of the following items are needed:  4- or 5-ounce bars of soap, any brand, in original wrapper.

(Check the weight carefully – we cannot accept soap smaller than 4-ounce bars for this project.)  Adult-sized toothbrushes in original packaging. (Toothbrush multi-packs may be used by sealing an individual toothbrush in a business-sized envelope.)  Dark-colored bath-sized towels, 20-27” wide and 40-52” long.

(Light- or medium-weight towels are preferred because they dry out more efficiently after use, and dark colors are more practical!)

Heads up! Bus loading of boxes for this spring’s LWR shipment will be Thursday, May 3 at 7 PM. Many hands will make light work!

Seminar on Advance Planning for End of Life Saturday, April 14, 1:00 to 4:00 PM, OHLC library

ak Harbor Lutheran Church will host a seminar dealing with the issues of Advance Planning Directives and compassionate care concerns for our loved ones in medical crisis and in preparation for death.

Learn About:  How to communicate your end-of-life wishes to loved ones and to your physicians.  End-of-life choices and the free services of End of Life Washington.

This three hour presentation will be facilitated by Judy McKay and Karen Griffith, from End of Life Washington. You will be guided through the process of documenting your wishes about the kind of medical care you do or do not want at the end of life.

OHLC supports local Relay for Life Oak Harbor Lutheran Church will be a proud sponsor of the 2018 Relay for Life of Whidbey Island, June 1 & 2 at North Whidbey Middle School. Tom Piper (5-year cancer survivor) is team leader for our Old Dogs/Young Pups relay team. Participate by: 1. Signing up on a Connection Card to indicate you’ll walk, jog, run or crawl with Tom. 2. Pledging a monetary gift in memory of a cancer victim or in honor of a survivor.

There are other ways to participate, too. Tom challenges OHLC’s women’s groups to form a team, or the Sunday School classes.

OHLC will have a reserved spot on the field at the event to camp out (overnighters are welcome), and volunteers will hand out information flyers about our church. Questions? Talk to Tom!

You will have the opportunity to work with the End of Life Washington Advance Directive, which combines a Living Will and a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care into one document.

A handout of the ELCA position statement on End of Life issues will be available as well for study, or call the church office, 360-6791561, and request a copy.

A sign-up sheet will be posted on the compassion care bulletin board. Please sign up so we can get an idea of how many might be coming, or call the church office and leave a message. There is no cost for the seminar, documents, or Advance Directive notarization.

Updates on the South Sudan global ministry project Since its official dedication in November, the new Reconciliation Lutheran Church in Juba, South Sudan, has become an important center for the community, with over 1,000 people attending weekly worship and many more receiving skills training and health care through the community center and clinic. Your gifts to the South Sudan global ministry project have brought us this far, but Reconciliation still needs your support to provide necessary resources and programming.

Give today to help ensure this ministry continues to thrive and grow!

y article for you this month is a simple, but important, request for prayer. As many of you are already aware, Josephine is considering a move “up” and out of the flood plain. As you can imagine, this is not an easy decision. There are a lot of things to consider. Finances is certainly one of them, but certainly not the only factor. Should Josephine be just a copy of what we are already doing, just in a new place and with a new building? Should Josephine consider expanding its scope led by our vision stated above? Might an expanded scope mean that we might need to spread out to serve people better? How would we manage a unified standard of care if we were to spread out? What are the particular needs of our Stanwood community and our surrounding communities? How could an opportunity like this help us do a better job at being a “caregiving community for all generations?” What might the opportunities be with our old facility? How do we not spread ourselves too thin and continue to provide quality care in our present location even as we explore other options? How do we bring together the wisdom of a wide range of key people to help make good and informed decisions?

These are just some of the initial questions and certainly as this process keeps moving forward you can expect that more questions will follow.

My request is that you keep your Josephine Board and CEO in your prayers as they try to be good stewards and leaders in this next major step in the life of Josephine. Thank you so much!

Stories of lives transformed Gifts to ELCA Global Church Sponsorship and ELCA World Hunger support programs around the world that impact lives daily. In his blog, the Rev. Viking Dietrich, an ELCA missionary, shares stories of the lives touched and transformed through ELCA-supported programs in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Read about refugees who have found safety and community at StARS in Cairo, activist organizations in Serbia working among Roma settlements to empower community leaders, and a Food Safety project in Lebanon that has secured livelihood in areas of plight.

“Crafts with a Cause” Young Adults in Global Mission participant Katie Golden serves in York, England, with social service programs at St. Columba's United Reform Church. In a February blog post, she shares the story of initiating a crafts group at the church, which has become a place of community building, bringing together congregants, people in the neighborhood, and those who are part of the social service programs of the church.

Warmly, Chaplain Andy Belated thanks to all who bought Fair Trade items at last December’s OHLC Fair Trade Fair. Fair Trade Winds owner, Emily Lynn, says this was best year yet in terms of sales, and she is donating $225 on behalf of OHLC to the Lutheran Disaster Appeal. This was also one of the best sale years we’ve had for the chocolate Advent Calendars. Emily will be providing them again in 2018 for advance sales as we did this past year.
