Pastor’s Page: Love in a time of fear

armed forces, Muslim translators who have provided valuable assistance at great personal risk, and Muslim allies around the world who have graciously hosted them. What brought them together as good neighbors is a shared recognition of their common humanity and a shared pursuit of common goals. You’d think that those at greatest risk of experiencing violence at the hands of Islamic terrorists would be the most hostile towards Muslims in general, but my experience has been that this is not true. Many of our friends in the military see the big picture, and understand the importance of being good neighbors to people of different faiths.

O

ur Sunday morning adult education class recently finished a sixweek study of the Small Catechism, Martin Luther’s profoundly simple summary of the basics of Christian faith and life. Likewise, we have five confirmation students who have just finished two years of studying this little gem. One thing noticed in both settings, particularly in our study of the Ten Commandments, is Luther’s concern for the neighbor. Luther believed that the gospel turns us inside out – from preoccupation with our own self-centered anxieties to the needs of our neighbors. These neighbors are not just the fellow Lutherans sitting beside us in the pew on Sunday mornings; they include the people around us in the world, people of all races, nationalities, and, yes, religions.

Being good neighbors does not mean papering over theological differences or pretending we all believe the same things about God. We do not. It doesn’t mean we must think the same way about complicated geopolitical issues. It doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to atrocities motivated by religion. Being good neighbors means recognizing that we share much in common with the overwhelming majority of people of other faiths who just want to earn a living, love their families, practice their faith, and live in peace. Being a good neighbor means working together to pursue these common interests. As Luther put it in the Small Catechism, being a good neighbor to others means striving to “help and befriend them in every need.” As Christians, and as Lutherans, we are called to be good neighbors to all people, moving beyond our fears to love and serve them.

I serve on the Board of Directors for Lutheran Campus Ministry at Western Washington University. Recently our Board has been involved in co-sponsoring an event called “Love in a Time of Fear: Muslims and Christians as Good Neighbors.” This event features Lutheran pastor Terry Kyllo in dialogue with local Muslim leaders on what it means for people of different faiths to be good neighbors to one another. It will be held at Bellingham High School on Monday, April 11 at 7:00 PM. Another group will be sponsoring this event at the Anacortes Senior Center on April 20 at 7:00 PM, and it will be part of the programming of the Northwest Washington Synod Assembly in May. These events are open to the public, and I would encourage members of OHLC to attend one if possible. (I will be attending the Bellingham event, if anyone would like a ride.)

The Lord we follow as Christians befriended a Samaritan woman. Samaritans were a heretical sect with a history of hostility towards Israel. When Jesus was asked “Who is my neighbor,” he told a now famous parable about a good Samaritan. Jesus healed an idol-worshipping Roman soldier and the daughter of a pagan Syrophoenician woman. Jesus came to Peter in a vision in order to tell him to eat unclean foods which were previously forbidden, so Peter could be a good neighbor to Gentiles. Reaching out to our neighbors of different religions, then, is not a compromise of our faith in Jesus – it is a consequence of it.

Sometimes these sorts of conversations slide into simplistic prescriptions for complicated political realities, but if we dismiss these efforts out of hand for that reason we miss the opportunity to explore something more fundamental: What does it mean to be a good neighbor to others, especially those of a different culture, a different religion?

What does it mean to be a good neighbor to peace and freedom-loving Muslims in a time of growing threats from ISIS and other violent groups who cite Islam as their inspiration? It isn’t easy – but both our Christian faith and our Lutheran heritage call us to try.

Loving our neighbors as Jesus loved them is not easy. Our fears, our preconceptions, and our passions often get in the way. May the One who has graciously befriended us move our hearts to love in a time of fear.

I think the men and women of our armed forces can provide us with some helpful guidance. I’ve had conversations with Naval officers here at OHLC who have spoken highly of Muslim colleagues in the

ur Ministry of the Month in April is the Kraft family, serving as missionaries in Peru. The Krafts were commissioned for their missionary work several years ago right here at OHLC. We share sponsorship of their ministry with Grace Community Church in Oak Harbor.

Nick and Shannon and family are currently on sabbatical on Whidbey Island, and will be with us on Sunday, April 17. They’ll bring a greeting to our Sunday morning services, and offer a presentation at 12:00 noon in the library. Lunch is provided. Come learn more about the recent trials and triumphs of their mission work in Peru, and support their ministry with your special offerings throughout the month of April!

Sunday, April 3, 6:00-7:30 PM Join us as we continue gather on the first Sunday of the month for a time of fun and fellowship for all ages! You are encouraged to have an early Sunday family dinner, and then meet at church for dessert, games, and devotions. Here’s what we’ll be doing in April: First we’ll meet in the fellowship hall for S’MEEPS (oven-baked s’mores made with Peeps Easter candy). What could be better than graham crackers, chocolate, and melted pastel-colored bunnies and chicks?

Adult class begins a new study series The Acts of the Holy Spirit:

Studies in the Book of Acts The book of Acts is the account of the early church and how it was nurtured by the power of the Holy Spirit and fed on the truth of the Gospel. In the book of Acts we are introduced to a pattern of evangelical growth that launched the message of Jesus Christ into a world that longed to see a new light in the darkness.

Come join us in our study of this fascinating book that is a companion piece to the Gospel of Luke. This 8-week study begins April 3 and meets in the OHLC library on Sundays during the education hour, 9:15 AM between worship services.

Next, we’ll enjoy SPRING BREAK-THEMED GAMES, including, but not limited to: church parking lot baseball (fear not, grown-ups, we’ll use a wiffle ball), fellowship hall Frisbee-toss, and a hallway cornhole tournament.

OHLC Cub Scout leaders receive accolades Several leaders from our OHLC-sponsored Cub Scout Pack received awards for exemplary leadership at a district banquet held on March 12. Those receiving awards included Pack Committee Chair Kristina Mayhew and outgoing Cubmaster Matthew Erickson. OHLC members Mike and Christine Higgins received an award for leadership of our Webelos den, and OHLC member Amy Spencer was honored as Charter Organization Representative of the year. We are proud that so many of the leaders in our Pack were recognized by the district, and we give thanks for their excellent work!

We’ll conclude our evening with family-friendly devotions in the sanctuary.

Audit Committee submits positive review for 2015

I

n February 2016, the Audit Committee met to review our 2015 financial records. Paul Senness chaired the committee and Karen Krotz-Sperry and Jan Heideger were members at large. Joining the committee during the review was Lane Paul, the Treasurer from Anacortes Lutheran. Lane was asked to participate so that the audit committee would have an objective/outside pair of eyes involved in the process.

The committee used the ELCA Congregational Audit Guide, which is much more detailed and involved than the audit procedures used in previous years.

April is National Spring Clean-up Month Help keep Oak Harbor beautiful!

The Audit Committee found that finances were being appropriately and accurately processed.

This should provide great comfort and reassurance to our congregation that their gifts are being used in the manner intended. Below is a quote from the audit report: Financial record keeping in the church office is executed well and was found to be accurate in all areas examined. The committee traced invoices to journal entries to bank statements and for each item examined everything tied together. It is the committee’s opinion that Carol Wiskow is doing an excellent job overseeing and managing the complexities of OHLC financial records. Overall the financial functions are running smoothly.

Items collected in April for Personal Care Kits

W

hen Lutheran World Relief distributes Personal Care Kits, it’s often to people who have lost everything. In the wake of an earthquake, or having fled from violence as their homes were overtaken, they clasp a towel from a faraway place, with a bar of soap, a toothbrush… and washing up, they know that they have not been forsaken by the world. The very simple gesture of giving a Personal Care Kit can give someone the encouragement to start anew, starting with a bath. [from the LWR website, www.lwr.org/personalcarekits]

The committee also reviewed our procedures relating to accounting, finance and treasury. Our procedures are strong and provide multiple checks to prevent malfeasance. As our procedures are not in writing, the audit committee has requested that we develop such policy documents. The finance committee will be working on this project in the coming months.

Items needed are as follows:  4-ounce bars of soap in original wrapper. Please check the weight carefully as some bars are only 3 ounces.  Adult size toothbrushes, in original packaging. Toothbrush multipacks may be used by sealing an individual toothbrush in a businesssized envelope; do not use plastic bags or wrap.  Dark colored bath towels, at least 20-24” wide and 40-54” in length. Recipients prefer thinner towels as they dry more quickly.  Monetary donations to cover costs of bulk items and anything else we need to fill in to make 100 kits

Other changes the committee recommended have already been accomplished. Revised 2015 donation letters that include the IRS statement regarding goods and services have been mailed to members.

Account names in our financial reports have been updated to reflect synod naming guidelines. Bids are being solicited to upgrade computer security.

There will be a donation box in the narthex for soap, toothbrushes and towels; monetary contributions may be put in the offering plate (be sure to mark it “Personal Care Kits”) or brought to the church office.

OHLC support continues for SPIN Café

he SPIN Café board members and guests would like to thank Oak Harbor Lutheran Church family for your continued support through time, resources and talents. The meals served have increased from 4,526 meals in 2014 to 8,123 in 2015 in part due to adding an additional day of service. Your two day a month service commitment has been a blessing and is so appreciated, as are the other services (computer support, various program volunteers), hygiene/dental products, gifts of supplies, and cash donations.

Without community support and service such as you have provided, we would not be able to achieve the mission of serving people in need. SPIN Café was recently awarded a grant from Island County Human Services Department through their Homeless Housing Assistance Project and will be expanding open center hours to Friday through Monday to help with those in crisis at the time regular agencies are closed (after hours and on weekends). We expect to begin these extended hours in late March or the beginning of April. Please keep the SPIN Café in your prayers and thank you again for all you do.

Thank you to Mark Needler for the hours he spent cleaning up after the church was vandalized with spray-painted graffiti on the outside walls near the bell tower.

The Whidbey News-Times printed an article in the March 23rd issue about OHLC’s ‘tagging’, along with Pastor’s Spencer’s open letter to the perpetrators (which has been widely circulated via Facebook): An Open Letter to Those Who Vandalized Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, You asked us to pray for you. It was a surprising request, scrawled in spray paint amidst profanities and cryptic remarks. I am writing to let you know, however, that we will. You see, as angry and violated as many of our members feel about what you have done, we understand very well how the longing for God can bubble up in the midst of our own brokenness. We’ve been there. We are there. Like you, we are broken people. We might not act out in the same way as you have done, but there are plenty of things we have done, or left undone, that come out of that same brokenness. We confess this truth about ourselves just about every Sunday. So, we understand. And we will indeed pray for you.

If you choose to confess to what you have done (which would be the noble thing to do) or if you are caught, you will be held accountable for the laws which you have broken. Our actions have consequences, and God works through earthly law to preserve and protect the conditions in which communities can flourish – including the protection of the property of others.

However, as Christians, we at Oak Harbor Lutheran also believe in the law of love, the law of forgiving others as we have been forgiven. And so, we forgive you. We let go of our right to be angry with you, and hope you will learn from this experience to build up your community rather than deface it.

One more thing: Next time you are overcome by rage or pain or boredom, rather than vandalizing a church, please consider going inside one. You will find that we have much in common. We can share with you how we’ve found forgiveness, healing, hope, and meaning in our lives in the midst of our own brokenness. We will certainly pray for you, but we would rather pray with you.

n behalf of MOPS at Family Bible Church, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of OHLC for your continuing support of our CFTC fundraiser. I am thrilled to let you know that we had over 12,000 pounds of textiles and earned over $2500!!!

His Kids Preschool

ere on Whidbey Island, the month of March came in like a lion with its windy storms! It was a perfect time to share with the children of His Kids Preschool about the different types of weather we have, and we even started keeping track of what type of weather greeted us each day while in class. The education wing bulletin board is decorated with the students’ crayoned and cut-out umbrellas and shiny foil “raindrops” (or is it hail??), helping remind us that – rain or shine – Jesus continues to love us through any type of weather.

March’s Special Students were Avren Reeves, Harper Duncan, Max Pawlak, Mikayla Hight, Seth Wisdom, Logan Hernandez, Aria Delafield, and Jasmin Mabalot.

We’re open for registration for the 2016-17 school year! If you know of a family looking for a preschool home, please let them know about our play and learn preschool. Thanks be to God for new life, continued growth and never ending love!

March is also our focus on transportation, and all the different ways there are to help us get around. Captain O’Connor and Lieutenant McArthur from North Whidbey Fire and Rescue came by to talk to us about water safety and let us explore one of their boats.

Rita Carter swung by with a Whidbey SeaTac Shuttle bus and picked up the children for a ride around the block and a quick stop at Whidbey Coffee for a hot chocolate treat.

Scholarship News

A

pplications are now open for the Theresa Ferguson Memorial Scholarship Fund of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Church members are invited to apply for monies that can be used for higher education. Students may use the funds to attend junior and community colleges, 4-year colleges, technical colleges and trade schools. The scholarship is reserved for church members who meet the application criteria. Candidates must:  Not abuse alcohol, tobacco, or drugs,  Meet the scholastic requirements of the school to which they are applying, and  Submit a complete application.

The scholarship is limited to $1000 per school year and is renewable annually. Priority is given to funding new students first, then second and third year applicant renewals. Fourth year scholarships will be awarded on a funds available basis.

To apply for the first time: 1) Complete the application; 2) Attach a written a one page statement about yourself, your activities, and continuing education goals, and 3) Provide the scholarship committee with three (3) letters of recommendation from non-family members.

If you are interested in this financial education gift, please apply

by May 1, 2016. Applications are available in the church office. We will try to award some scholarship money to all eligible students.

Miss Debbie Reetz, our science lady, came by this month as well. She brought one of her ducks and two chickens to visit the class and even brought us some little caterpillars for us to watch, wait and hopefully see them turn into beautiful butterflies.

The classroom is full of spring-like decorations: high-flying hot air balloons, wild little lambs and lions, and watercolor fish kites. We are wrapping up this busy month of March with our Easter celebration with dyeing Easter eggs, painting paper eggs and even having a small egg hunt, always remembering that God’s love gives us new life.

A stunning examination of how tragedy affects a town, a marriage, and a family. That neither nature nor nurture bears exclusive responsibility for a child’s character is self-evident. But such generalizations provide cold comfort when it’s your son who’s just opened fire on his fellow students and whose class photo – with its unseemly grin – is blown up on national news. The question of who’s to blame for teenage atrocity tortures our narrator, Eva Katchadourian. Two years earlier, her son Kevin murdered seven of his fellow high-school students, a cafeteria worker, and a popular algebra teacher. Because he was only fifteen at the time of the killings, he received a lenient sentence and was sent to a prison for young offenders in upstate New York.

Telling the story of Kevin’s upbringing, Eva addresses herself to her estranged husband through a series of letters. ose Weible died on March 6, following a long illness.

She was 88. A native of South Dakota, Rose and her husband, Herb, had a farm near Turtle Lake before moving to Oak Harbor in 1960. The Weible family joined Oak Harbor Lutheran Church in 1970.

Hello, Josephine Partner Churches!

Let me start off with a word of thanks for your continued prayers and support. Your partnership really means a lot to us.

I thought I’d share a project we’re working on and maybe get you in on it In working with some of our residents, we thought some music might enhance their quality of life. I think of myself and when I hear some of the music that I grew up with, I know I’m tapping my feet and singing along. A little known secret—I always wanted to be part of a rock band (we can talk about that another time). The point is when we connect the right music, it can cause a wonderful emotional response.

This is where the smartphone idea comes in…

If we got some old smartphones that had the capability to connect to our Wi-Fi and we can get the Pandora app on them, we could use them to set up “stations” to play some of the residents’ favorite songs. I was thinking there might be a bunch of folks upgrading their smartphones but don’t have a use for their old phones. If this is your situation, let me know and we could help make this connection for our residents.

Herb and Rose’s son Dennis died last September. Our hearts go out to Herb and their surviving children, Tom, Sandie and Bob and families, during this time of mourning.

W

e were saddened to receive word of the March 17th death of Catherine Fengler in Olympia. Her son Steve had been with her and reported that it was a peaceful passing. She had celebrated her 90th birthday in February.

Darlene Buss, who sent us the message as well as the photo, said that she and Jerry had made a recent visit, and Catherine “was her delightful, quick-witted self,” adding that she was physically weaker but still ambulatory, and had been hospitalized recently for pneumonia.

Catherine was a wonderful member of OHLC’s music ministry, having served as organist from about 2001 to 2007. When she was moving from her home in Coupeville to the Seattle area – and eventually to a retirement community – she said something about taking it easier and maybe just starting a choir... As it happened, she did go on to serve for a time as part-time organist at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church.

Wherever Catherine went, good music was sure to follow. Peace be to her memory.

Dear friends, brothers and sisters in Oak Harbour Church!

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ happened 2000 years ago, but nowadays this spiritual event is so important as never before. Today we have lost our true values in the constant chase of mammon and only God and the Bible can return them.

We are living in a complicated and self-contradictory world. We need to unite, to preserve our faith and to confirm that God is alive, that he works and wins in our lives. We need to call the unbelievers to accept Christ into their hearts to save their souls for eternal life in God's presence. We pray for the Lutheran churches, for the sick, for those who are sad and poor, for those who are in difficult circumstances, for God to give them hope.

We have good news in our church. Our dear Ludmila Pankratova is back to us after a long illness. As members of our church we are happy to be together and to serve each other’s needs, like branches on the vine. We know if we break away from the vine we will wither and die.

In this spring Easter day we want to share our love to you, dear brothers and sisters, and we wish you courage and virtue to follow the narrow path by God's grace.
