who are deployed, for mommies who “have a lot of work to do,” and for grandparents or siblings who are sick. It is a high privilege to teach these kids that they can share their joys and concerns with God, and a deep joy to see them start to do so.

People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

Miss Gaye loves getting our students outdoors. We live in a time when our lives are increasingly spent indoors and lived “virtually.”

This makes it all the more wonderful to see how frequently our His Kids students encounter the wonders of the natural world. Whether it is the classroom bunny, a field trip to the pumpkin patch, a nature hike in our woods, or my personal favorite – squirting sea cucumbers at the Sea Lab at Camp Casey, our students are regularly exposed to creation as God made it. Connections are made between the wonders of creation and the wonder of a Loving Creator, nurturing the mind and the spirit alike.

s we celebrate our 75th anniversary as a congregation, there is another anniversary which shouldn’t be overlooked. Our preschool, “His Kids,” is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013. There is much to celebrate about this ministry of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church! His Kids preschool is not only a way of getting kids ready for kindergarten and beyond, it is also a ministry of the gospel.

While our director (affectionately known as “Miss Gaye”) is passionate and professional about all the developmental aspects of preschool, everything done at His Kids is infused with the wonder of God’s love.

Since only a few of our members get to actually see the work of His Kids, I’d like to give you a few glimpses of this ministry in action.

Our students learn all the “normal” preschool stuff, too. They learn about colors and letters and weather and glue sticks and how to take turns and how to share and how to sit still. But as they do so they are also regularly learning about the love of God. This is done carefully, out of respect for the wide variety of families who bring their children to His Kids, but it is also done deliberately. It is part of the air breathed at His Kids, and through it these kids are richly blessed.

One of my favorite moments in the school year comes in the fall when each His Kids student is given their own story Bible. These Bibles are presented with great reverence and joy at a special chapel service, with parents snapping photos from the choir seats. The looks on the faces of these kids are priceless. They grin broadly as they sit back down with those Bibles on their laps. Often they report back weeks later about something they saw or had read to them from their new story Bible.

What a privilege for our congregation to play a part in introducing these children to the wonder of God’s Word!

Don’t overlook this treasure down the hall! His Kids is a vital, important ministry of our congregation. Through it we serve our community by providing a solid preschool education to our neighbors.

Through it we also serve as the arms of Jesus as these children are welcomed and blessed with the love of God. Twenty years is an important milestone, and we have much to celebrate.

I lead chapel services three times each week, once with each of our regular preschool classes. We sing songs. We hear Bible stories.

We also pray. Before I lead these little mini-congregations in prayer I take prayer requests from the kids. Sometimes these requests are a tad on the silly side and I’m not quite sure what to do with them. (I was not taught in seminary how to pray for or about unicorns, and have yet to find a reputable theologian who addresses this.) However, often the prayer requests are serious and sincere. We frequently pray for daddies

ittle Lutheran activity bags are available in the narthex for young children’s use during worship. The artwork that is created belongs to each child; bags, crayons and clipboards should be returned to the basket in the narthex to be refilled for the following week.

Little Lutheran Bags keep young worshipers busy

eginning April 14, Pastor Spencer will begin a six-session class called What Lutherans Believe. Using a question-based approach (see schedule below) we will explore traditional Lutheran theology and its relevance for today. This will serve as an introductory class for inquirers and new members, a refresher class for longtime Lutherans, and a fill-in-the-gaps class for everyone in between. In other words, all are welcome!

The first Sunday of each month remains dedicated to our Ministry of the Month. This month we are focusing on the healing ministries of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Join us on April 7 to learn about our Stephen Ministry program, our Parish Nurse program, and other healing ministries we offer here at OHLC. And Lydia begat Ruth – a new women’s circle! ue to both the number of women interested in an evening women’s circle and different hopes for the group, Lydia has given birth to a new circle: Ruth. The Ruth circle will meet in the Prayer Room on the first and third Mondays of the month from 6:30-8:00 PM. Ruth Circle will focus more intensively on Bible study, while Lydia Circle will continue to do both Bible study and service projects. Choose your group and get involved!

Marriage Care, April 21 Our next Marriage Care small group will be held Sunday, April 21, 5:00-6:00 PM. We meet monthly for fellowship, study, and the ongoing enrichment of our marriages. This is an open group – you don’t need to have come to previous meetings. While husbands and wives are encouraged to attend together, if your spouse is deployed or working you are welcome to come on your own. Appetizers will be provided for adults. Child care and healthy snacks will be provided for kids.

Pastor on vacation Pastor Spencer will be away from Monday, April 1 through Monday, April 8. He will be back in the office on Tuesday, April 9. Pastor Stroud is on call in case of emergency. (Yes, the Mickey Mouse ears are a hint about the Spencer family’s spring break destination!)

“Journey to Jesus’ Table” is set for April 28 Communion education for early elementary-aged children (PreK through 3rd grade) will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 28. This interactive educational experience begins with lunch, and continues with a “journey” around our church grounds as we explore Bible stories which teach us about the Lord’s Supper. This class is offered as ongoing education for children who are already receiving communion, as well as for those who would like to begin.

or the preschoolers, the month of March began with spring-like weather, so it was appropriate to create their March lambs first. Stop by the classroom and see the fluffy cotton ball paper plate lambs with their varied expressions of surprise, wonderment, curiosity and a few that look simply confused. Not to be outdone, there were many March days where the weather growled like the king of the beasts.

Therefore paper plate lions with wild shredded paper manes take their place beside the lovely lambs on the preschool room bulletin boards.

And taking advantage of our sometimes-wild, sometimes-gentle spring breezes, we have a row of fish-shaped kites hanging from the classroom ceiling, brightly water-color painted and cut out by each of the students.

Transportation was the theme for the month of March. The children zoomed their cars down the “rug” highway, sailed and motored boats during water-play and built space shuttles to the moon with tinker toys as well as making craft projects for land, water and air transportation. The air transportation craft of 3-dimensional painted paper towel tube rockets with puffy white batting smoke decorates one of the bulletin boards in the classroom. The preschoolers were also invited to tour an airplane at NAS Whidbey!

Easter isn’t over! uring your preparations for Easter, you may have heard someone say, “All this work and it’ll all be over so soon.”

Sorry, but they’re wrong.

Easter as a celebration of the return of spring, the Easter of the Easter Bunny and colored eggs and candy, fancy hats and new spring clothes may be over by Easter Monday, not to come around again until next year.

But the true Easter, the celebration of Christ’s resurrection, is never over. Easter is the reminder and the celebration of a continuing fact: Christ, who was raised from death, is alive today, tomorrow and forever.

Daily he offers us – and the whole world – power to begin new life now.

Easter isn’t over … ever!

The month ended with an Easter celebration of coloring hard-boiled eggs, eating green eggs and ham, hunting for candy- and sticker- filled plastic eggs, singing spring songs and hearing the story of Jesus’ resurrection .

As worshipers gathered at OHLC on Easter Sunday, they were able to see the preschoolers’ contribution to the beauty and Alleluia of the day with their decorations of pastel water-colored paper Easter eggs on the education wing bulletin board.

Coupeville Book Group… …meets Tuesday, April 2, 7:00 PM in the home of Dottie Krigbaum, 697 Olympic View Drive, Coupeville, to consider 1 Dead in Attic: After Katrina, by Chris Rose: 1 Dead in Attic is a collection of stories by Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose, recounting the first harrowing year and a half of life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Celebrated as a local treasure, Rose provides a rollercoaster ride of observation, commentary, emotion, tragedy, and even humor-in a way that only he could find in a devastated wasteland. They are stories of the dead and the living, stories of survivors and believers, stories of hope and despair. And stories about refrigerators.

Lutheran Men in Mission, April 6 he Lutheran Men in Mission will be celebrating our One Year Anniversary with our connection to the parent national group. It will be Saturday, April 6, 8:00-10:00 AM in the church fellowship hall. Many of you have participated at one time or another over the past year, sharing stories about books, travels, church upbringing, things that bother you, gift giving and tasks to do at home, in the community and the world.

BUT, now is the time to get together, listen, and reflect on words presented by a number of inspirational leaders via DVDs. They will make us laugh, maybe cry, challenge us to deepen our faith, try to understand who we are and what our ministry should look like these days.

From an e-mail we received from Jean Congdon on March 12: t is with extreme sadness that I have to write and tell you, family and friends, that Stewart died yesterday surrounded by his family and pastor. His body just could not tolerate any more of the cancer even though his mind and spirit wanted so much to continue this earthly life. I have family with me now and a memorial service is planned for March 23, at Westminster Presbyterian church in Anacortes. We are asking that no flowers be sent but we welcome your cards, e-mails and phone calls.

Fundraising continues for our education wing roof replacement. Please check the narthex bulletin board for a poster that records our progress! There will be a fundraiser to benefit this project – mark your calendar and plan to attend an Anglum barbeque pulled pork sandwich luncheon on Sunday, May 5, following the 10:30 AM worship service.

Attention all bakers, crafters, knitters, crocheters, woodworkers, seamstresses, quilters, and other creative and talented folks... We’ll be having a Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 2. Compassion Ministry

Personal Care Kit items gathered in April During April, we’re collecting items for Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. Bring individual items – or completed kits !! – and drop them in the marked collection box in the narthex. Include ONLY the following items in each Personal Care Kit: 1 lightweight bath-sized towel (20x40” to 52x27”, dark colors preferred) 2 bath-sized bars of soap, any brand, in original wrapping 1 adult-size toothbrush in original packaging 1 sturdy comb, remove packaging 1 metal nail clippers (attached file is optional), remove packaging.

Wrap all items in the towel and tie securely with ribbons or yarn.

April’s focus is on Caring Ministries aring Ministries at Oak Harbor Lutheran is our focus for April.

The Compassion Ministry Committee would like to invite you to hear about the various opportunities for members of the congregation to participate in these exciting and personal outreach opportunities to minister to friends and neighbors in the name of Christ. The Adult Forum on April 7 at 9:15 AM will feature Jan McCullough and Pastor Stroud, speaking about the various forms of Caring Ministries, including: Stephen Ministers Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide confidential oneon-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.

We’ll meet at church at 9:00 AM to collect the hard hats and reflective vests and carpool to the site. Healing Ministry 1st Sunday of the month prayer and healing ministers are available during the celebration of communion.

The rummage sale to benefit Watoto Child Care Ministries in Uganda has been rescheduled from April to Saturday, June 1, 9 AM to 3 PM in the fellowship hall. Clean out your garage and closets, downsize, and bring your useable items (excluding clothes, electronics, and exercise equipment) to OHLC after 5:00 PM on Friday, May 31.

All of these ministries are grounded in the mission of the Holy Spirit to bring teaching, healing and encouragement to the membership of the church through the ministry of all believers. Come on April 7 at 9:15 AM in the library and listen to the presentation between church services, and maybe consider your calling in one of these ministries.

oncordia Lutheran Church in Oak Harbor welcomes their new pastor, the Rev. Mark T. Hanson. Pastor Hanson, his wife Jennifer and their children, Sarah, Wyatt, and Emma, moved from Sabin, MN, but they do have some northwestern roots – the Hanson family lived in Portland before Mark entered the ministry. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin this new relationship of ministry in our community!

Synod Assembly celebrates ELCA’s 25th and elects a bishop The Northwest Washington Synod Assembly will be held May 16-18 at the Lynnwood Convention Center, Lynnwood. Keynote speaker is ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson [not to be confused with the Rev. Mark T. Hanson mentioned on the previous page].
