theologically astute rhymes, were a beloved part of my sons’ early faith formation. We wrote a letter telling her so and sent it to Concordia, hoping it would somehow make its way to her. It did! It turned out that our letter of gratitude came to her as she was going through some very hard times. Not only was she going through a painful divorce, but she had recently learned that her publishing deal with Concordia had been ended. She wrote us back, telling us our words meant the world to her as she went through that season of intense discouragement. Thus began a pen-pal relationship incorporating Facebook, e-mail, and good old regular mail, which has continued for several years. She sent the boys autographed copies of her books, and continues to do so now that she’s releasing books again with a new publisher. We receive personally illustrated Christmas cards from her. She even did a family portrait for us in the inimitable style of her books. We had no way of knowing our small gesture of gratitude would result in a timely affirmation for someone who was deeply hurting. We had no idea it would result in a lasting pen-pal relationship with a delightful author either! Good things happen when we give thanks.

Giving Thanks

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind…

n a few weeks, people across our nation will sit down to tables heavy-laden with food. Many will bow their heads and give thanks for their many blessings before digging in. Then, unbelievably, many will wrap up the leftovers and go shopping – but don’t get me started on that.

Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks. This doesn’t just mean thinking thankful thoughts, it means actively giving thanks. Those bowed heads are one important way to give thanks to God, to whom we owe our thanks and praise every day, and for every meal. But what if we went beyond that fleeting moment of prayer to actively give thanks to others for the blessing they have been to us? This is what St. Paul does as he begins most of his letters – he thanks God by thanking specific people, often naming the ways they have been a blessing to him. He even thanks the Corinthians! Do you know how messed up the Corinthians were? Read the letters! However, they didn’t need to be perfect to be considered a blessing worthy of his expression of gratitude.

ratitude is not a just a pious feeling – it is something we do.

Gratitude is best when it is actively shared, and there should be a level of urgency to our giving of thanks. As I write this in mid-October I’ve recently received word that the accompanist I worked with for several years at my previous parish is suffering from cancer and receiving hospice care. I was the one who hired her after she decided to leave the congregation she had been playing for. (I may have lured her away. It depends on whom you ask.) We were close as co-workers, and as my oldest son’s first piano teacher she became a cherished family friend as well. I am hoping to reach her with some final words of gratitude for the blessing she has been to me and my family. I am praying I can give her my thanks before it is too late. I am wishing I had been more intentional about giving thanks to her before these dire circumstances came about.

What if we were to follow Paul in this practice this Thanks-giving? What if we were to actually give thanks to God by actively expressing our gratitude to the people who bless our lives?

Several years ago, my family and I were inspired by a magazine article which suggested directly giving thanks to someone who has touched your life. On a lark, we chose to show our appreciation for children’s book author and illustrator Joni Walker, who has written many books for Concordia Publishing House. Her Christian children’s books, with her touching artwork and

appreciate them? It is so easy to take people for granted. I know I don’t thank people as often as I should. We live in a time when so many people feel so isolated, so insignificant. Our giving of thanks can have a profound impact. Let’s make it a point this Thanksgiving to do gratitude. Let’s all make an effort to actually give thanks. Let’s share our words of appreciation while we can. They will likely mean more than we realize.

A big thank you to our new acolytes: Alyssa Blevins, Isabel Carr, Anders Spencer, and Isaiah Wiley. Thanks also to our newly trained assisting ministers: Ron Ernst, John Fowkes, Penny Fowkes, Mary Kay Hallen, Carol Reafs, Sheila Ryan.

Thanks to all of you for your willingness to serve in our worship services!

Let me get the ball rolling by expressing my gratitude for you, the people of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. I thank you for valuing my gifts, and being patient with my shortcomings. I thank you for the way you respect my family, and my need for time with them. I thank you for thanking me so regularly and so sincerely. I know many pastors who feel unappreciated in their calls. I’m grateful that because of you all, I am not one of them. Thank you for the ministry we share in this blessed congregation, in this wonderful community, on this beautiful island.

It has been a long-standing tradition for Oak Harbor Lutheran Church to share a joint Thanksgiving Eve worship service with Whidbey Presbyterian Church.

This year the service will be held at OHLC, with Whidbey Presbyterian’s associate pastor Bethany Popkes preaching. Join us Wednesday, November 26 at 7:00 PM for an evening of gratitude, fellowship, and the sharing of the Lord’s Supper – the original Thanksgiving meal.

Fair Trade Winds coming to OHLC, November 30 Winds will be coming to OHLC on Sunday, November Fair30,Trade offering goods from artisans from developing nations. Visit their display in Herrigstad Hall between or after services to peruse a wide variety of gifts. Your purchases directly support farmers and craftspeople in impoverished lands. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be sent to Lutheran World Relief. Fair Trade Winds will also be present during our Advent Workshop that day.

Auction in Everett benefits Camp Lutherwood

On November 8, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, the annual Lutherwood Benefit Auction and smorgasbord will be held at Trinity Lutheran College, 2802 Wetmore Avenue, Everett, to celebrate the 2014 year at Lutherwood and kick-start the 2015 season! Christy and I have bought a table for 8 seats, therefore we are asking for 6 others from the congregation to attend with us. If more than 6 would like to attend, then additional tickets will be need to be purchased by the individuals. As many of you are aware by now, Ben and Emily (Rodriguey) Richards are expecting triplets near the end of November! Two girls and a boy will join ‘big’ brothers Sammy and Joshua. Please keep all of them in your prayers!

Emily’s doing well and has regular appointments at the UW hospital, where the babies will be born.

She and Ben send their grateful appreciation to all who have been offering support. With that in mind, a scheduling registry has been set up at http://mealbaby.com/, a place where people can choose a day to bring a meal and then enter what they intend to provide. This helps others see what’s being brought so they can plan accordingly to avoid too many menu repeats. The link for the family is http://mealbaby.com/viewregistry/17765100 .

Diapers will be a daunting prospect!! The family has a registry for cloth diapers and other supplies on Amazon.com; you can find the Baby Registry for Emily Richards via the Wish List tab. (Gifts of cash or Amazon gift cards would also be gratefully accepted, although Emily says she’s far more accustomed to such offerings benefiting Lutheran World Relief or missionaries in Peru than the Richards Family Triplets.

That’s okay, Emily. As family, we need to take care of each other!)

Endowment Committee Lutheran Men in Mission & the Brotherhood of St. Bernard

Will planning seminar offered in November On Sunday, November 9 after the 10:30 AM service, the Endowment Committee will host a no-cost Will Planning Seminar in the church library. (Food provided.)

n Saturday morning, November 1, the Lutheran Men in Mission will have a very exciting breakfast meeting in Herrigstad Hall.

Come for coffee and warm up time at 7:30 AM; breakfast will be served at 8:00. During breakfast, we’ll plan a field trip and we’ll revisit a couple of recent “hot” topics to discuss and pray about.

This is a time of the year where there are numerous opportunities for involvement in projects both for the church and the community.

Come and share your energy and enthusiasm for our Lutheran Men in Mission group while having a great breakfast.

Guest speaker is Lutheran attorney Brian Stiles, who will bring us information that includes:  Why review your will  Easy ways to do will update  Average costs for wills, Time will be allowed for questions and answers. This conversation should be quite valuable.

Brotherhood of Saint Bernard: Veterans Day special recognition lunch On Tuesday, November 11, the “Old Dogs and Young Pups” of the Brotherhood of Saint Bernard will host a lunch for ALL retired veterans and active men and women in the armed forces. Lunch will be served at 12:00 noon in Herrigstad Hall. There will be some memorabilia on display, plus we will allow a few moments for retired veterans and active military to share their experience testimonies.

This appreciation time is the least we can do to honor all veterans on this special day.

His Kids Preschool

ctober has been a busy month at His Kids, for our teachers and preschoolers alike! We were concentrating on owls, bats, pumpkins and our bones! (Do you detect a theme?)

We had a slightly damp but thoroughly fun-filled field trip to the pumpkin patch located at the Case Farm (an annual event that’s always a great time!). Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin gave a delightful tour of their animals and the kids got a kick out of seeing the cows with their long tongues as they greedily devoured the pumpkins (the cows, not the kids) that were given to them. The cows didn’t get all the pumpkins, of course – the kids were given a chance to pick one apiece out of the pumpkin patch and take them home to their families.

Another part of our learning this month was about ourselves and our families. This led to our fall Open House on Wednesday, Oct. 22 and both classes had a great turnout. The families came in to tour the classroom and the children were able to show off some of their art work, including easel-painted paper jack-olanterns grinning from one classroom bulletin board, crinklylegged black construction paper spiders suspended from the ceiling, and cut paper crows and scarecrows on another bulletin board, considering each other with their bright googly eyes.

Right now, the education wing hallway bulletin board has our pre-school family tree. It’s decorated with leaves that the children painted and photos of the children and their families. If you have a moment, take a look at the family tree – you may see some familiar faces from the congregation and community!

We wrapped up the month with our annual pajama party, as the children showed up in their pajamas and slippers, and we had games and bed time stories at school!

This fun time is a favorite, even for our teachers.

In November, we will be learning about nutrition, the food pyramid and (of course!) thankfulness.

Compassion Ministry

Generosity keeps Spin Café spinning!

Oak Harbor’s Spin Café is dedicated to Serving People In Need, with a mission that includes providing meal services, education, and vocational training.

The volunteers at Spin Café send thanks to the congregation of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church for the donations of unopened, ‘travelsized’ and ‘motel-sized’ items such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and various other miscellaneous items. We may take it for granted that we’ll find what we need when we open our own bathroom cabinets, but not everyone is so fortunate. The donation basket is located in the narthex, near the Ministry of the Month bulletin board. Your continuing generosity is so much appreciated.

Combined shipment on its way to Lutheran World Relief

O

n October 31 we will be loading 1,433 pounds of LWR projects for the Seattle Ingathering. This will include 294 baby care kits, 98 school kits, 15 personal care kits and 79 quilts.

Our sincerest thanks… …to Trudy Decker, school kit coordinator, and the women of Deborah Circle for assembling the kits from items so generously donated by the congregation and the families of His Kids Preschool; …to Karen Bowers for making the baby care kits; …to the Heart & Hand group for knitting and crocheting sweaters and hats that go into the baby care kits; …to the Blanket Workshop ladies for making the quilts; …to Thrivent Financial for supplying funds to purchase quilt batting; …to Whidbey-SeaTac Shuttle, for donating the use of a bus to transport everything to Seattle, and to OHLC’s Rita Carter for doing the driving; …and especially to the OHLC congregation for being so generous in donating items for all those projects and for donating the funds needed to pay the shipping costs.

In addition to the above, we’re delighted to be able to transport 8 boxes of quilts, personal care kits, and fabric kits to the ingathering from our friends at Concordia Lutheran Church.

November’s mission focus is North Whidbey Help House s noted in last month’s Harbor Beacon, hunger is an ongoing challenge in our local communities. North Whidbey Help House, our local community food bank, is located at 1091 SE Hathaway Street in Oak Harbor and serves northern Whidbey Island from Deception Pass south to Bakken Road in Greenbank.

Their mission is to provide assistance to those in need in our community in an impartial and dignified manner. In addition to food, their services include tele-care daily phone calls to elderly or handicapped people living alone, and Salvation Army-sponsored prescription medicine assistance.

Jean Wieman, Help House’s Executive Director, will be with us on Sunday, November 2, to present a closer look at this community resource during an informational forum at 9:15 AM in the library.

OHLC’s Abby Chromy reminds us that our weekly donations in the Help House barrel in the narthex are much needed and much appreciated! Besides the staples, there will be a list posted for specific seasonal items requested for their upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets.

Highway 20 roadside clean-up report Thank you to Dean, Margaret, Candace, Karen, Kathy, Evan, Celine, Tom, and Marj on a job well done on the roadside clean up on October 11. In spite of the bad weather, we collected 16 bags of trash.

Nineteen volunteers participated at various times in our 4 cleanups in 2014. We collected a total of 66 bags of trash and spent 55 man hours. Thanks to all and may God bless you.

Philipp Zanko, who has been our English-speaking contact and interpreter on behalf of our sister congregation, is moving his family to Ukraine by Christmas. The congregation is worried about Philipp and his young family. Ken Grigsby has been in ongoing e-mail contact with Philipp and they have had several conversations regarding the Zanko family’s concerns about recent events in Crimea and eastern Ukraine.
