“…grow,” Our growth as a congregation is about more than attendance or membership numbers. It is about spiritual maturity. It is about discipleship, practicing our faith. It is about learning. It is about deepening our relationships with each other. We have been experimenting in some exciting ways this past year with intergenerational Bible study, our Marriage Care group, and our all-ages family outings, and I’ve been very pleased with the results. I’m always on the lookout for new ways to help people connect with God and one another in our busy, changing world, and I appreciate your willingness to try new things.

We’ll continue to experiment in the new year ahead, that we might find new ways to grow in faith towards Christ and in love for one another.

Our Mission in 2014

OUR MISSION STATEMENT: Formed as a community of God’s grace in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, Oak Harbor Lutheran Church welcomes all people to worship, grow, and serve for the sake of the world.

W

hen I first came to serve as pastor here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, I wondered if our mission statement still “had legs.” I wondered if it still reflected the core values of the congregation.

I wondered if it had enough of an edge to it to continue to push us towards greater discipleship as individuals and deeper mission as a congregation. Three years later, I’ve come to the conclusion that it does. This was particularly apparent to me as we prepared our signs for Oak Harbor’s Fourth of July parade this past summer. People were eager to use the language of our mission statement, and waved those signs with joy and pride. As we come to a new year, how will our mission statement continue to challenge us? I have some ideas: OHLC’s logo

“…and serve for the sake of the world.” Opportunities will abound in 2014 for serving our world. Our Ministries of the Month will continue, with both new ministries and old favorites being featured. The important community service we provide through our Munchy Monday after-school program has been growing both in numbers of students and the number of adult volunteers, a trend we can hope will continue in 2014. The Watoto choir from Uganda will be here in March, which will give us a chance to personally serve these beautiful children of God as their host here in Oak Harbor. Serving others, within the congregation, in our community, and in our world, continues to be a hallmark of our congregation’s life.

“Oak Harbor Lutheran Church welcomes all people…” One of my ministry-related New Year’s resolutions is to beef up our outreach efforts. Gisela Hawley and Marj McNae have been faithfully reaching out to newcomers, but they need help. You’ll notice a new budget line for the Outreach team in this year’s budget. This seed money will help us be more creative and intentional in our welcome of newcomers with gifts, visitation teams, and orientation events. You’ll hear more about this soon.

Someday we may need to tweak or re-write our mission statement, but I think it still describes us well and gives us plenty to work on in 2014. I pray you will make it your own mission statement in the new year ahead, and that you will continue to find it worthy of your most generous offerings of time, talents, and treasure.

“…to worship,” There were a few Sundays in late 2013 when our worship attendance was lackluster. This is due to several factors, including more and more snowbirds, several permanent residents moving away, and, yes, the remarkable season the Seahawks are having. There are bright spots too, such as the growth we’ve seen in the 8:00 AM service, particularly with young families coming in. However, we would all like to see the pews more full more consistently. This starts with you.

Commit yourself in the coming year to worshipping more regularly, and inviting others to join you. Reach out to those you haven’t seen in a while. Work up the courage to invite a coworker or neighbor. I know how much that one hour (or so) of worship means to so many of you – why not share the beauty and meaning and peace you receive here with others? They need these gifts even as we need their presence.

January 6: All-ages Epiphany bonfire & potluck Celebrate Jesus, the light of the world, with the whole family as we gather at our fire pit (behind the education wing) for an Epiphany bonfire! Please bring a dish to share for our potluck dinner. We'll provide the s'mores and hot chocolate for dessert. Our Epiphany party will be held on Monday, January 6 (the actual date for Epiphany) from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. 2

˜The Semi-Annual Congregational Meeting of Oak Harbor

T

he Coupeville Book Group will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7:00 PM in the home of Julie Ward, 1053 Halsey Drive. The discussion of the book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking, by Susan Cain, will be led by Lisa Margraf.

Lutheran Church will be held between worship services on Sunday, January 12. All voting members of OHLC are encouraged to be there as we consider our congregational budget for 2014 and attend to other items of business. An agenda for the meeting will be available by January 5.

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts – think Rosa Parks, Frédéric Chopin, Dr. Seuss, and Steve Wozniak – that we owe many of the great contributions to society. Author Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the th 20 century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts - from a witty, high octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, superbly researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.

The Semi-Annual Meeting of the congregation is set for Sunday, January 12, 2014, between the morning worship services.

Bids for the roofing project and the fire-suppression system will be presented at the January council meeting, for subsequent presentation to the congregation at the Semi-Annual meeting on the 12th.

A teenager with Asperger’s Syndrome is smart, quirky, and has a passion for crime scene analysis. How does he end up being on trial for murder? All the hallmark behaviors of Asperger’s – not looking someone in the eye, stimulatory tics and twitches, inappropriate affect – can look a lot like guilt to law enforcement personnel – and suddenly, Jacob finds himself accused of murder.

House Rules looks at what it means to be different in our society, how autism affects a family, and how our legal system works well for people who communicate a certain way – but lousy for those who don’t.

dvent is a time to wait.....

The preschoolers waited in anticipation for Christmas with songs, stories, toy manger scenes and puzzles and creative projects. The first project of the season was a green paper holly wreath with blue painted handprint candles. As the Sundays in Advent were celebrated, each candle was “lit” with a yellow painted thumbprint flame.

January will bring the favorite project for old and young alike – the Student of the Week! Look for two students each week as their posters will be highlighted on the preschool bulletin board in the hallway next to the classroom.

Ring, ring, ring for joy.......

Giant, festively-painted paper bells with sparkly gold, silver, blue, red or green glitter clappers were the next preschool project. The bells were happily displayed all around the classroom.

The sounds of joyfully-ringing bells were created by the children as they rang jingle bells and gleefully sang both traditional and preschool Advent and Christmas carols.

(Teacher’s note: As our His Kids families have no doubt learned by now, most preschool songs are sung either to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat or Mary Had a Little Lamb.)

Celebrating Epiphany Epiphany, from the Greek word epiphaneia, means an appearance or manifestation. Christians celebrate this festival each year on January 6, the 12th day after Christmas. Epiphany ends on Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins.

Epiphany marks the coming of the Magi, or wise men, to worship the baby Jesus. Because the Magi were Gentiles, Epiphany symbolizes the first recognition of Christ by non-Jews. It’s a reminder that Christ came as the light – and Savior – of the whole world.

The traditional color for Epiphany is green, indicating life, growth, hope, and eternity. Symbols for the season include a light, candle, s tar, crown, gifts, and a globe. Epiphany has become a time for reaching out and “showing” Jesus as Savior of all people. It’s also a reminder to engage in Christian community and to heal divisions.

A Savior born on Christmas Day......

A third project incorporated the letter J. The students painted paper candy canes in a pattern of red-white- redwhite stripes. After the candy canes were cut out, they were pinned on the bulletin board upside down to form the letter J, reminding us that Jesus’s birthday is why we celebrate Christmas.

This month the children were also busy with making a gift, wrapping the gift, and giving it to their families, as well as being enraptured by Pastor Jeff’s telling of the Nativity story at chapel time. The last week before vacation included a field trip to A Knot in Time north of Oak Harbor, for a

he men’s ministry programs will continue in 2014 in their traditional ways:

Blanket Workshop Blanket Workshop meets Tuesday and Wednesday, January 7 & 8 beginning at 9 AM in the fellowship hall, getting the year off to a good start by working on quilts for Lutheran World Relief. If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to help make the world a little warmer or more comfortable for a disaster survivor, refugee, or someone else in need, this would be a great place to start.

The Lutheran Men in Mission will meet on January 4, 2014 from 8:00 to 9:30 AM in the Herrigstad fellowship hall. Our head chef for the day is Kelly Brock. Coffee will be ready by 7:30, so come early and have a cup and chat with a friend.

We will continue our review of 2013 events, and get a consensus of where and what we would like to tackle as “Tasks and Opportunities” for 2014. Bring your ideas or send them to me by January 3 (piperet2@comcast.net) if you are unable to attend the breakfast.

Each month we will select a head chef, who in turn will solicit help from two or three volunteers to help for the next breakfast. The breakfast/meetings are always on the first Saturday of each month. You will have an opportunity on January 4 to select a month when you will be the head chef.

Heart and Hand Heart and Hand handwork group meets at 9:30 AM in the prayer room. Bring your own knitting, crocheting or other handwork projects, help assemble baptismal banners, or make infant sweaters and hats for layettes for Lutheran World Relief. Contact Leona McKee (see above) if you need more information.

The Brotherhood of Saint Bernard will meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from noon to 1:30 PM in the Herrigstad fellowship hall.

Once again we volunteer to take turns providing a lunch for this meeting. I’m volunteering to stir up some grub for the 14th of January, and someone can sign up for the 28th at that first lunch/meeting.

We will continue to turn more pages in the Master Builders Bible as an excellent source for scripture studies and conversation. The 2013 meetings were lively, spontaneous and rich in the Christian spirit to all in attendance. We’re looking forward to more old and new faces and to continue this opportunity for our “Old Dogs and Young Pups.”

Mother Mentors, a new program for a continuing need

Compassion Ministry

Mother Mentors of Whidbey Island is a new program connecting volunteer mentor mothers with parents of newborns and small children, to provide practical and emotional support for new parents experiencing – for the first time – the stress of raising children. Stephen Ministry begins a new training series

FROM PASTOR STROUD: January will focus on Opportunity Council

Stephen Ministers have been an essential part of Oak Harbor Lutheran life for many years.

These ministers have maintained an active listening ear to members of the church who are going through various struggles in their lives. They are there to support, show compassion, and model a Christlike love in to those in need.

I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, naked and you gave me clothing, sick and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.

- Matthew 25:35-36.

ompassion Ministry’s emphasis for January concerns the Island County Opportunity Council. Oak Harbor Lutheran Church has a long history of working with this private, non-profit agency to help residents of the county with basic support for families and their housing, heating, feeding and child-care needs. Opportunity Council helps those struggling with poverty related issues, and empowers people to find their way out of poverty and towards self-sufficiency.

Opportunity Council was established with three clear goals. First, to empower seniors in the community to maintain their independence and ensure that people’s homes are warm, comfortable and safe places to live. Second, Opportunity Council is interested in supporting children and their early education, preparing them for school with early-learning programs and school supplies. Finally, it is the goal of the council to provide adequate food and housing for people who struggle in the community due to economic challenges in their lives.

We invite you to meet Lisa Clark, the Island County director for the Opportunity Council, at an adult forum at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church on January 5 at 9:15 AM in the library/fireside room during the Sunday School hour.

Those who show interest in becoming Stephen Ministers receive training to better understand the dynamic of communication that goes on between two people. Listening, asking the right questions, and refraining from judgment or giving advice are skills that help in the development of a healthy relationship between the Stephen Minister and the care receiver.

On January 14 we will begin a new series of trainings for Stephen Ministers. The meetings will be on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 AM throughout the winter quarter. If you are interested and have not already contacted Jan McCullough or spoken to me, let us know and we will include you in to the training.

She was 95; she and her late husband George joined our church in 2000. Her memorial service will be Saturday, January 18 at 2 PM at OHLC. …to Janice McCaffery, following the death of her husband, John, on Nov. 25. A longtime member of the congregation, he was 83 years old. …to Sheila Ryan and Dave Myers, following the death of Sheila’s sister, Kathleen.

ELCA Malaria Campaign expands to two more countries With the addition of Namibia and Burundi, the ELCA Malaria Campaign now supports Lutheran companion churches and organizations in 13 countries in Africa to provide community-based malaria programs. This year was very contradictory in Tatarstan. On the one hand, the World University Games as a symbol of prosperity and success. On the other hand, the Boeing crash in Kazan and the attempts of terror attacks against the petrochemical plant in Nizhnekamsk using self-made missiles.

Central African Republic: Lutheran schools fill the gap Over 3,000 students are receiving an education at 20 “Village Schools” operated by the church in places where there are no other schools. Susan Smith, an ELCA missionary, is an educational advisor to these schools.

One may remember the famous words: “For when they shall say, peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape” (I Thessalonians 5:3).
