Easter Vigil, and fourteen by affirmation of faith on Easter Sunday.

God isn’t just outfitting us with building upgrades, but with new brothers and sisters in Christ! Sounds like a congregation with a future to me.

I

was sitting at my desk, nursing a headache from the heavy duty paint odor hanging in the air, abetted by the obnoxious ratcheting of a power wrench connecting pipes for our new fire suppression system, when a call came through. Thankfully my phone has a red blinking light, because I couldn’t hear it ringing. I picked up the phone in a moment of quiet, but just as I answered the power wrench started its skull-jarring clacking once again. “I’M SORRY,” I yelled into the phone, “WE’RE HAVING SOME WORK DONE HERE. HANG ON JUST A MOMENT.” When it was quiet again, I was able to continue the conversation. I apologized again for the noise, and then the person on the other end said something that completely changed my attitude about all the noise and inconvenience I’d been experiencing. He said, “No problem! That’s the sound of a congregation with a future!”

The months ahead will see some changes to further outfit us for the future. I am working on a new confirmation program to begin this fall, designed not only to better accommodate the schedules of modern middle-schoolers, but also to reflect new research on effective faith formation. I have been testing the waters for some adjustments to our ministry team structure as well. At the conclusion of the program year (which ends May 18) we will begin making some changes. Some current teams will be refocused, while others will be reformed and redefined as new teams. New job descriptions and meeting schedules will also be introduced. This will be unveiled in detail at the June semiannual meeting and explained further in future newsletters. Changes sometimes bring headaches. However, congregations with a future are always adapting, always tweaking, updating, and adjusting.

The caller turned out to be a salesman, but I think flattery and sincerity can coexist. He was right. We are a congregation with a future. It is better for our church to smell like paint than like mothballs. It is better to have the noise of construction than the silence of deferred maintenance and atrophy. The headache I was nursing was a symptom of a serving a congregation with a future. This realization (and an Aleve) made my headache much more bearable.

“For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.’”

(Jeremiah 29:11) In spite of the headaches (both literal and figurative) I’ve endured over these past weeks of construction, I cannot tell you how blessed I feel to be serving a congregation where this verse is so palpable, so evident. I thank God for all of you, and for the exciting future ahead of us.

We are a congregation with a future. We have been hard at work outfitting our building for the future as we have replaced a roof and a fire suppression system at a combined cost of over six figures.

This has all been paid for through your generous offerings, as well as through in-house financing made possible by reserve funds held by our congregation. We have some work ahead of us yet as we build up these funds again, and as we take up the task of beautification – fixing up everything we had to tear apart to complete these projects – but I have no doubt we will step up and get these jobs done too.

Intergenerational Bible study for May

T

his month we will be wrapping up the “Ancestors” curriculum we’ve been using for our intergenerational Bible study this past program year. Thanks to everyone who has participated!

Before we finish the curriculum with Paul and Lydia, we will be hearing from members of Grace Community Church who have recently traveled to Peru to visit the Kraft family. (We share sponsorship of the Kraft family with Grace Community.) Come get an update from those who have seen first-hand what the Krafts and Go Missions are up to!

We’ll also take a break on the 11th to enjoy our Mother's Day breakfast between services. See below for information about a new class on the psalms led by Pastor Stroud beginning in June.

The Psalms: Words that open our hearts to God

Marriage Care Bible Study set for May 18

This June, a new adult Bible study will begin with a look at the book of Psalms. The study will survey the Psalms as the ultimate poetic Hebrew expression of the relationship between God and his chosen people.

We will study the variety of Psalms and their purposes, from calls to worship, musical hymns of the congregation, laments of the people in times of trouble, psalms of instruction, psalms of mourning and psalms of praise. We will reflect on how the psalms are used in a distinctly Christian context as an prophetic echo of God’s presence throughout history and the foretelling of Christ on earth.

We will hear reflections from the saints of the church such as Augustine, Ambrose, Julian and Martin Luther and how the psalms brought illumination into their lives and insight into their theologies.

The study will run for 7 weeks during the adult education hour on Sundays, 9:15-10:15 AM between services. Reserve these dates: 1st session: June 8, 15, 22, 29; 2nd session, July 13, 20, 27.

What could a lifelong bachelor from the first century have to teach us about marriage? Quite a lot, actually! Join us for our May Marriage Care gathering as we explore St. Paul's writings on marriage. Bring your Bibles!

Nicely done, Rachel and team members! to OHLC’s Rachel Margraf, student president of Oak Congratulations Harbor High School’s robotics team! Whidbey Island Wildcat Robotics was picked to attend the FIRST Robotics championship competition in St. Louis and they finished 40th out of 100. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a nonprofit organization sponsoring national robotics contests and other competetions aimed at getting young people interested in science. OHHS’ robotics team has been meeting on Monday afternoons in our education wing Peggy Fosso’s granddaughter, Mari Rodin, is a member of the robotics team at Anacortes High School; they also went to the St. Louis competition and didn’t make it into the finals like OHHS, but Peggy heard they had a wonderful time.

Synod Assembly meets May 16-17 Northwest Washington Synod Assembly will be gathering at TheComcast Arena in Everett on May 16 through 17. Bob & Carol Wall and Tracy Tomlin are our voting members from OHLC, and will attend along with Pastor Spencer and Pastor Stroud. Please keep our voting members and the whole assembly in your prayers as they gather to worship, learn, and engage in mission together as Lutherans in northwest Washington.

he preschoolers started April with a week of Spring Vacation and returned to class refreshed and ready to hop to their Easter projects.

First, they painted giant paper eggs with water colors, just like coloring hard boiled eggs. The students cut out those oval shapes and then the eggs were used to decorate the classroom’s small bulletin boards.

Easter is about surprising changes, so the children saw those changes when their blue and green handprint caterpillars changed into butterflies with fluttering wings decorated with colorful tissue paper squares! The larger classroom bulletin boards served as home for all of those creatures.

] OHLC Women [ Opportunities for study, fellowship & service

Planting and growing are also April themes. Using potting soil and a pinch of worm-produced soil, the preschoolers planted sunflower seeds in eco-friendly natural fiber pots that can be trans-planted directly into their gardens at home. Preschool graduates say these small seeds grow into amazingly large plants! As the classes wait for the those first green shoots to appear, they busy themselves with cutting out and creating a paper version of the favorite preschool flower, the dandelion. The dandelions are also make a wonderful classroom decoration.

Handwork Group Heart & Hand handwork group meets at 9:30 AM in the prayer room on Friday, May 16. Bring your own handwork projects or help us work on sweaters and hats for Lutheran World Relief layettes or assemble baptismal banners.

Insects were the subject of a visit by the Pacific Science Center Science on Wheels program. Brian introduced students to the 6-legged subjects and then let the children loose to experience the bugs with a variety of hands-on activities including an up close look at 2 Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. Thank you to our preschool secretary Martha for assisting and guiding the children through these activities.

] Compassion Ministry [ Go Missions International is our May mission emphasis

F

ormer Oak Harbor resident Shannon Kraft and her husband Nick are the driving forces behind Go Missions, along with their 4 children and, of course, the Holy Spirit! Starting in Peru in 1998 as church planters and youth ministers, they were sent to Bolivia in 2003 and then began work in 2007 on a wider scale in Peru, Bolivia and Chile. They focus on teaching children and youth, strengthening marriages and families, and encouraging Latin Americans to step out in mission.

As of this past March, they have just completed their 3rd annual discipleship training school. An internship for youth age 16 and up, it’s a challenging, life-changing experience designed to strengthen faith and character.

Last year, a piece of property became available with great potential to answer their needs for a facility of their own. We look forward to hearing updates on the progress of this purchase.

There will be an adult forum at the 9:15 AM Sunday School hour on May 4 to highlight this ministry – see Pastor Spencer’s note on page 4. Special offerings this month may be designated Go Missions; use the blue-bordered envelopes in the pew racks.

Oak Harbor Pregnancy Care Clinic Baby Bottle Boomerang The Pregnancy Care Clinic (PCC) in Oak Harbor is a ministry providing care and support for people experiencing unexpected pregnancies. OHLC member Morrie Parker serves on the board of the PCC. This year, we are participating in their community-wide fundraiser, the Baby Bottle Boomerang. Those interested in donating to our local PCC may pick up a PCC baby bottle in our narthex on Mother’s Day (May 11). Take it home. Fill it with change, cash, and/or a check, and return it on (or by) Father’s Day (June 15).

Roadside clean-up report Thank you to Dean, Margaret, Tom, Evan, Janice, and the Stone family for all their help on the roadside pickup on Saturday, April 12.

We collected 17 bags of trash. Mark your calendars; our next pickup will be Saturday, July 12.

n these Easter days I am greeting you by words of Apostle Paul in 1 Cor. 15:21: “For since by man came death, by Man came also the resurrection of the dead”. Christ is risen from the dead and is calling everybody to a resurrection.

Dear friends in Christ from Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil (John 3:17-19).

We are celebrating Easter and rejoice in Christ’s victory. We rejoice, because humility, self-renunciation and sacrificial love overcame the sinful hostility of a human being with God. God in Christ reveals Himself as true love. Love has power over the death itself. The victory of Christ’s Resurrection belongs to each believer.

The powers of darkness which killed Jesus still manifest in our world.

The lie, the violence, the fear are still fighting for the human soul. But the Light, the Hope, and the power of resurrection will never leave us alone, because: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

I wish all of you on these Easter days vital hope, true joy and trust in Risen Christ – the Victor.

He writes: “I discussed with Ludmila Pankratova the relations between our churches (I mean Kazan and Oak Harbour) in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. We both came to an agreement that the politics must not have any influence on our friendship. It is the official position of our church.”
