Seminary last month for the Midwinter Theological Convocation, Professor David Lose pointed out how we’ve moved away from a culture of duty and towards a culture of discretion. In other words, people don’t do things out of a sense of obligation anymore.

There are few cultural pressures steering people one way or another, particularly when it comes to going to church. Instead, people decide what they are doing to do. In a world with a dizzying array of options, people use their discretion in choosing how to spend their time in ways that make their lives meaningful. We can no longer rely on a cultural sense of duty to get people to church.

Instead we need to appeal to their discretion, giving them a reason to be part of a community of God’s grace in Jesus Christ. If we can’t articulate our own reasons for being part of this community, how can we even begin to make a case to someone else?

Sharing our faith stories

S

everal years ago I served on the corporation board of Concordia College, a Lutheran college in Moorhead, Minnesota (Go Cobbers!). During that time, the college welcomed a new president. In his first address to the corporation board he made some remarks which really stuck with me. He was unveiling a marketing campaign for the college – the first serious attempt at marketing in the college’s history. He noted how previous attempts to promote Concordia College had been hindered by a Lutheran culture of quiet humility. This is a good trait to have in many ways, he explained. However, it has often been taken to an extreme which prevents people from sharing their story, a story that can bring opportunities to others. “Concordia College has a story to tell,” he said, “and keeping that story to ourselves is not humility, it is hording.”

On Wednesdays this Lent we’ll be focusing on sharing our faith stories. We have five brave members of our congregation who will be sharing their own faith story during worship, and then over our soup suppers you will be invited to share your faith stories with one another.

Conversation starters on each table will include questions like: What difference does your faith make in your life? Why do you go to church?

What is a favorite Bible verse and why? I encourage you to start thinking about how you might answer these questions. If we can practice talking about these topics with each other, we’ll be more inclined to talk about them with people outside the church.

He could just as easily have been talking about our personal faith stories. An article in The Lutheran magazine lamented the chronic “Lutheran laryngitis” which plagues our people, preventing us from talking with others about our faith and inviting them to come to our church. This reticence to talk about our faith with others is often rooted in a false concept of humility, as though speaking of God’s work in our lives is always an exercise in bragging or self-promotion. It can become that if we’re not careful, to be sure, but remaining silent poses an even greater danger: It prevents the gospel of God’s grace from being heard by others. It is then that we are no longer practicing a pious humility.

Instead, we are hording the grace we’ve been given.

As Lutheran Christians today, we have a story to tell. We have a rich understanding of the gospel which says that God has responded to our profound brokenness and sufferings as human beings with the grace and love of his Son, Jesus, who raises us up and gives us a new life. The variations on this theme are as exponential as the varied lives we live, and each of our stories need to be heard. This Lent, let’s practice sharing them.

Another problem which hinders many of us in sharing our faith with others is that we’ve never been prompted to articulate our experience of faith. In her book Unbinding the Gospel, Martha Grace Reese explains that because so many Christians grew up in the church, they don’t really think about their faith. We can’t fathom life without God, without Christ, without the church. Our faith has always been part of our lives in one way or another. It is just there, like our breath. How would we describe our experience of breathing to someone else? It wouldn’t even occur to many of us to try.

To our staff, volunteers, preschool families, and outside groups, thank you for your patience as we undergo some major maintenance projects on our church facilities.

March will continue to be a noisy, stinky, ugly month at OHLC, but most of the work should be done by Easter. If you or your group has been displaced or otherwise inconvenienced, we apologize.

Thanks also to Mark Needler, Ron Muzzall, Willard Krigbaum.

Bill Wonner, Tom Piper, Josh Piper, and everyone else who has been contributing their time and talents to our ongoing projects.

It is important to be good stewards of our property, and these much-needed maintenance projects will ensure that our facilities will continue to be a good and safe place for us all as we worship, grow, and serve for the sake of the world!

Wednesdays in Lent: Worship & soup

L

ent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 5, with services including the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion at12:00 noon and 7:00 PM. (Note there will be no soup suppers on Ash Wednesday.)

Wednesday Lenten services will be held at noon and 6:00 PM beginning March 12, using the Holden Evening Prayer liturgy. Our theme for midweek services this Lent will be Sharing our Faith Stories.

(See “Pastor’s Page” in this newsletter.) Meals of soup and bread will follow at 12:30 & 6:30 PM; sign-up sheets to bring food and/or help with set-up and clean-up can be found in the narthex.

Please help us build a resource list of skills (real or imagined) by signing up in categories that include general carpentry, plumbing, painting, lawn care, window washing, and more. There will be a sign-up sheet in the narthex or you can make a note in an opportunity form in your Sunday worship bulletin.

On Sunday mornings this Lent, Pastor Spencer will share conversations with five individuals who encountered Jesus. This dramatic dialog-style sermon series will help us experience the Lenten gospel readings in a different way.

Marriage Care, March 16 Were you one of the 17 couples who enjoyed our Date Night last month? Or are you interested in drawing closer to your spouse and spending time with other married couples?

Join us Sunday, March 16 at church for our Marriage Care group. We’ll meet from 5:00-6:00 PM. Child care is provided.

This isn’t therapy or group counseling, just an ongoing supportive conversation on faith and marriage. Come and see.

This in-depth study of Luther’s Small Catechism will include some homework and daily prayer journaling. It is hoped that participants would commit to attending each session. It will begin on Ash Wednesday (March 5) with a short meeting at 8:15 PM to distribute materials, and continue at 7:15 on the following Wednesday evenings during Lent.

Participants will be invited (but not obligated) to participate in an Affirmation of Baptism liturgy during Easter Vigil on April 19. Those who are not yet baptized will be invited (but not obligated) to be baptized at the Easter Vigil.

Join us in the fellowship hall, 7:00-9:00 PM, for a great evening of fun and fellowship for adults (high school age and up). Instruction provided; no experience necessary!

March 21: Watoto Children’s Choir comes to Oak Harbor!

The Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda will be performing at the Oak Harbor High School Auditorium at 7:00 PM on Friday, March 21. We will be their host for a dinner that evening in the fellowship hall, and will be looking for OHLC families to host one or more children overnight.

Intergenerational Bible study in March: We continue to enjoy intergenerational conversation, fellowship, and learning as we invite 7th graders to 70th graders to our Sunday morning Bible study.

We’ll begin the month of March with an opportunity to learn more about Watoto child care ministries in Uganda as we hear a report from OHLC members who have traveled there recently.

Throughout the rest of the month, we’ll continue to meet figures from the New Testament. Join us in the library from 9:15 to 10:15!

The Coupeville Book Group…

The Council met February 6. Highlights of the meeting include the following:

Pastor Spencer reported that he baptized 8 individuals over the course of 8 weeks and presided over 3 funerals in January.

The roofing project will resume when backordered materials arrive in early February. While the fire suppression system project is underway, the building is without functioning fire suppression protection. (Smoke detectors are working, however, and that alarm will summon the fire department.) Until the system is operational, a person designated as “fire watch” is required when anyone is in the building.

The story follows Haruko as she perseveres, becoming the mother of the next Crown Prince.

God’s eye is on the sparrow, so OHLC’s Steve Ellis will help us turn our attention to the nesting birds on Whidbey Island. Courtship, birdhouse plans, providing nesting material, and other associated information will be presented. Steve is immediate past president of Whidbey Audubon Society. he month of February had “heartly” started when our preschoolers were deep into their preparations for Valentine’s Day! The first project was to easel-paint a heart-shaped stencil either pink or red. When the paintings were dry, students put their cutting skills to the test by cutting out the heart shape. The hearts were put up in the classroom as our first decorations of the month.

Our February Students of the Week were Jaelynn Coon, Christian Garcia, Danté Halstead, Jack Seal, Caylin Charnas, and Kaiden Mandelkow.

The second project was to prepare Valentine cards for their families. This was 3-step process that began with a choice of red or pink construction paper and then moved to the children signing their name inside the card. The 3rd part entailed a choice of red, pink or white paint which was spread on their palms. When hands were placed one at a time, palms down with fingers overlapping to form a “point,” it made a handprint heart on the front of each card.

But the cards still weren’t quite ready to send, so the children prepared the envelopes with address and the church’s return address, and placed a “sealed with love” stamp in the upper right corner. Now they were ready to be mailed! So off the classes went on field trips to the Oak Harbor Post Office. Big “D” was our tour guide, who introduced the preschoolers to the mail carriers, showed them how the mail was sorted, let them peek inside a mail truck, and shared the secret of how such a large building is heated. It was a fun and informative field trip!

Looking ahead, March winds will blow in many breezy activities as the children take a tour of the world of transportation.

Please note there will not be class for the Pre-K Readiness group on Friday, March 21 (Preschool Teacher workshop day), and Spring Break is the week of March 31 through April 4.

Shalom, Miss Gaye Registration for the coming school year opens at 9:15 AM in the narthex on the following Thursdays: March 6, for continuing students and siblings; March 13 for OHLC members and regularly-attending non-member families; March 20, open registration for the community.

The rest of the month was filled with projects about the five senses: paper towel tube “binoculars,” V-shaped bouquets of scented paper violets, paper plate tambourines, and a paper garden of touch. We finished the unit with a yummy tasting party.

hy our interest, time, fundraising, work, prayer support, and travel to Watoto in Uganda? The quick answer is God calls us to go! We’ve been there several times now, and we rejoice to see God in action. Rich Americans that we are, it’s humbling to go to such a destitute country and see the outpouring of God’s love through the Church at work.

Ann is an example of someone who has so little and yet she is able to say thank you and give praise to God. As a child, she lost her foot by stepping on a land mine while she was walking into Gulu because her family was afraid she would be captured by Joseph Kony and become a child warrior. While she was asleep in Gulu, her family was executed by child warriors. Having been made an orphan, she was eventually captured by Kony and became a slave of the warriors. On our last two Ugandan trips we have been able to fashion a modified shoe/prosthesis for Ann so she is no longer walking on her leg bones. Despite all her trials and tribulations, she is constantly thanking God. And so we go back, because of Ann’s smiles and thankfulness. Uganda is a place where the people who have the least often turn out to have the most.

We’ll be collecting items this month for Personal Care Kits It’s time to start assembling Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. When natural disaster strikes or political conflict flares,, families often have little chance to gather their belongings before fleeing danger. They arrive in a refugee camp or other place of safety, scared, vulnerable, and dirty from travel. The simple items included in a Personal Care Kit allows them to wash away dirt and sweat with the fresh scent of soap and the softness of a towel, reminders of someone’s care and concern for them in their plight. We invite you to capture a glimpse of what is happening in Uganda, and what your support is helping make possible, at these upcoming Watoto events:  March’s mission of the month is Watoto!  Sunday, March 2, we’ll have an Adult Sunday School presentation at 9:15 AM in the library/fireside room.  Sunday, March 9, the Watoto Team will host coffee hour following both morning worship services.  Friday, March 21, the amazing Watoto Children’s Choir will appear in concert, 7:00 PM at Oak Harbor High School.

Each Personal Care Kit contains the following items:  One lightweight bath-sized towel (20” x 40” to 52” x 27”) dark color recommended;  Two bath-sized bars (4- to 5-0z.) of soap, any brand, in original wrapping;  One adult-sized toothbrush in its original packaging*;  One HEAVY DUTY comb (NO picks or fine-toothed combs), packaging removed;  One metal nail clippers (attached file optional), packaging removed. * Toothbrush multi-packs may be used by sealing an individual toothbrush in a business-size envelope; no plastic bags or wrap.

We’re planning to have daffodils available at church when they’re ready in the field, and to offer some African items for sale, made by the women of Watoto Living Hope.

Ahoy, Mateys: Please check the bulletin board for more information and future events. There may be a mystery involved! And an event where treasure might be found! Arrr!

Wrap all items in the towel and tie securely with ribbon or yarn. Please do not enclose the kit or any of its contents in plastic bags.

There will be a donation box in the narthex for items and completed kits!
