Rhubarb: A Parable

A

I might be stretching things a bit here, but I suspect that the wonderful things Lutherans have been known to do with rhubarb may be rooted in our theology. Lutherans have always placed a strong emphasis on the transformative power of God’s grace, given to us through Christ. The heart of our understanding of the gospel is that God takes lowly, imperfect, sometimes sour human beings, sweetens us up through his forgiveness and love, and sets us free to be a blessing to others.

s pastor at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, I am blessed on a regular basis by the generosity and thoughtfulness of our members here. I am grateful to the Muzzall family, who has been known to come by our house to drop off a box full of various cuts of grass-fed beef from their farm, Three Sisters Cattle Company. I am grateful to the Lundstrom family, who fills an entire shelf of our freezer each year with a freshly butchered spring lamb. These are generous gifts. Three Sisters Beef is a premium product. Lamb fetches a good price at the meat market. Everyone at my house appreciates this generosity, and delights in these mouth-watering contributions to the Spencer family menu.

We get this from scripture, of course. As Mary sang her Magnificat, she predicted that the child in her womb was coming to “lift up the lowly” (Luke 1:52). As Jesus started his earthly ministry, he chose lowly fishermen, tax collectors, and sinners as his disciples. Jesus had high regard for women and children, who were often disrespected and dismissed as unimportant in the ancient world. As St. Paul spread the gospel across the Mediterranean, he passionately proclaimed how the cross – the lowliest place in all creation – was the place where God was at work to transform his relationship with sinners of every stripe. As Paul wrote: “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise…God chose what is low and despised in the world…to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God” (1 Corinthians 1: 27- 29).

Another gift we appreciate is the rhubarb we receive regularly from Anabelle Mitchell and Dottie Krigbaum. Every Lutheran pastor probably has a rhubarb lady, but I’m doubly blessed with two! Unlike grass-fed beef or lamb, rhubarb doesn’t get a whole lot of respect in culinary circles. You don’t see fancy restaurants making a name for themselves with their rhubarb dishes. Famous chefs aren’t known to feature much rhubarb in their repertoire. For some, rhubarb is little more than a weed. When I was living in North Dakota I had a family who kept me well-supplied with rhubarb. When I thanked them, they said, “Ah, it’s nothing. It’s just what grows up out back where we toss the dog poop.”

In Jesus’ death and resurrection, God took what was lowly, despised, and rejected, and turned it into something magnificent.

Through Christ, God is now doing the same thing for us. God takes lowly, broken, sinful people, and transforms us in such a way that, through grace, we become something wonderful in his eyes and a means of grace to others.

However unsavory its origins might be in some cases, I’ve always loved this lowly vegetable (yes, technically it is a vegetable). Other Lutheran Christians seem to appreciate it too. In my past 15 years of parish ministry (including my internship), I’ve had rhubarb served up by parishioners in many wonderful ways. I’ve had rhubarb upside-down cake, rhubarb custard with meringue, roasted rhubarb with white wine and vanilla, rhubarb spice cake with lemon topping, chilled rhubarb sauce, rhubarb streusel bread, rhubarb crumble cookies, rhubarb brownies, and, of course, the classic rhubarb pie. These many and varied rhubarb concoctions show that with a little love and attention, a few lowly stalks of rhubarb can be made into something wonderful. All these delicious dishes illustrate how an often disrespected, no-account backyard bush can be transformed into something that melts in your mouth and puts a smile on your face.

So thanks, Anabelle and Dottie, for the rhubarb. And thanks to all the rest of you for joining in this ministry we share to make Christ’s transforming love known.

Tucked away in the VBS work room down the hall in the education wing, though, is endless color! Fantastic sea creatures, splashy corals, and bright sunny beaches are waiting for their moment to shine along with Jesus’ Parables! Our radiant VBS Volunteers are excited to teach and guide VBS participants through this fascinating week of games, crafts, activities, snacks, animals, songs... It will truly be Fun with the Son! Sunday Adult Forum -- Our duty and delight: Understanding Biblical Stewardship in Our Lives

S

et aside some time between church services on Sundays, August 10 and 24 as we continue a Bible study on biblical stewardship. Our Duty and Delight is a 6-session video program by Mark Allan Powell, guiding participants to a clearer understanding of what it means to be servants of God, responding God’s care for us.

Dr. Powell is a Bible scholar and theologian and has emphasized a biblically-informed approach to Christian stewardship. He draws from personal experience and theological insight into how we respond negatively to the word “Stewardship” and approaches the subject in a positive way that calls us to act out our purpose as God’s people, created in God’s image. Dr. Powell seeks to evoke a faithful and joyful response by Christians as God’s good stewards.

Sunday School resumes September 7!

A

nother exciting year of growing in Christ is about to begin! The first day of Sunday School is Sunday, September 7. For our pre-K through 4th graders we will be using the Spark! lectionary curriculum, which further explores the Bible readings we hear in worship. 5th & 6th sixth graders will be using a special curriculum this year which will help them reflect on faith and discipleship in their lives as preteens. Those in 7th grade and above will be joining the adults again this year for an intergenerational study of the gospel of John, utilizing a word-for-word film version of John’s gospel alongside Bible reading and conversation.

Sunday School teachers are currently being recruited! Cheryl Blevins is our Sunday School coordinator for the 2014-2015 program year. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Cheryl or indicate your interest in on upcoming opportunity form.

Child Protection Policy training offered August 10 Pastor Spencer will be conducting OHLC’s Child Protection Policy training class on Sunday, August 10 at 9:15 AM in the sanctuary.

IN THE BEGINNING? The Old Testament banned Jews from saying the name of God. In fact, the name itself – Yahweh – was nearly unpronounceable. But some argue that without realizing it, the first and last breaths (and many of the other ones in between) that we take in life are actually the name of God. Take a deep diaphragmatic breath in as you inspire the sound of “yah” and then push it out all the way until you wheezed the sound “weh.” Perhaps spiritual guidance is closer than you think.

Worship will begin at 11:00 AM, with a potluck BBQ following. Please plan on bringing salads and desserts.

Many thanks once again to Roger and Georgette Anglum for cooking up their famous BBQ for us!

Please note we will offer an 8:00 AM service at the church for those who can’t or don’t wish to attend the outdoor service.

Along with our worship and potluck BBQ, we will be conducting an old fashioned country auction to raise funds to replenish the building fund we emptied to complete our roof and fire suppression system projects. Come prepared to bid on a variety of goods and services offered by your friends at OHLC! The list of items for auction already includes made-to-order cheesecakes, yarn baskets, wine baskets, flowerbed clean-up, birdhouse basket, canned fruit basket, BBQ catered party for 25 guests. This summer I am working on my Eric & Lynne, Wrangell, AK; photo by Martha Ellis, 7/27/14 approval essay. It is a daunting document in which I must articulate my theological con-victions, talk about my sense of missional ministry, and submit a sermon along with my reflection and critique of it. This essay will be read by a faculty approval team (my advisor and one other professor) and the synod Candidacy Committee this fall. I will meet with each of these groups and they will determine my approval for ordination. So it’s pretty important!

We’re also hosting a number of friends and family as our guests in Wrangell this summer. It’s fun to show off our little piece of the world!

I will soon be registering for the fall semester and my final course! Eric & I have decided to leave Wrangell in January at the end of my internship. We will stay with my mother in California while we await my assignment to a synod and then for my first call. We will find some temporary work there and help Mom do some projects around her house. But there is still much to do while we are here to wind up this whole seminary journey.

Your prayers and support have been such a gift to me! I continue to hold OHLC in prayer as you faithfully live the gospel in so many wonderful ways.

These displays will ring our fellowship hall as we celebrate the beginning of a new program year.

Please take a look at the budget numbers in this newsletter (pg. 9)! Do you see what you did? We were over $20,000 short on our year-to-date general fund budget at the end of May. Our Pentecost Appeal brought in $9,134, and additional generous offerings in June brought that deficit down to under $4,000. This is a great place to be at this time of year!

Christians. Many journalists, businessmen, and politicians have been killed in Russia for the truth during these years. None of them was a Protestant. All these years we were very loyal to our government and not very loyal to Christ. That’s why Russia in general is lost for Christ today except for a few percent of its population.

In my opinion, today friends in the US are even more important for us than ever before. We need contacts with Western Christians in order to survive spiritually. Thank you for your fidelity.

MissiOns Ministry August’s mission focus: Adult forum, auction, icons presentation highlight OHLC’s Kazan connections

ugust’s Mission of the Month is our companion synod congregation, St. Katharina Lutheran Church, Kazan, Russia. On Sunday, Aug. 3, at the 9:15 AM adult forum, Ken Grigsby will offer a presentation about the October 2013 Northwest Washington Synod trip to visit partner churches in Russia, including St. Katharina in Kazan.

There will also be a Russian-themed coffee hour after the 10:30 AM service.

School Kits for Lutheran World Relief

During August, OHLC’s Kazan Committee will sponsor a silent auction of Russian items, which will be displayed in a showcase in Herrigstad Hall. There will be a “Kash for Kazan” jar in the narthex; the Kazan Committee asks people to put loose change from their pockets and purses in the jar. The donations from the Silent Auction and “Kash for Kazan” will be sent to St. Katha-rina to help the church finish up the reconstruction of their sanctuary and to help with other projects.

As you do your shopping during the great sales on backto-school items, remember to purchase extras for Lutheran World Relief! Trudy Decker, OHLC’s coordinator for this project, reminds us of specific items that are particularly needed:  Spiral notebooks (ruled, 8 ½ x 11”)  Pencil sharpeners (small)  Rulers (12” long and including metric measurements)  Blunt scissors There’s a collection box in the narthex. Concluding Kazan’s Mission of the Month, local artist, icon painter, and iconographer, Jill Reed will give a presentation on icons, their background and theological significance, Sunday, August 24, 2:00 PM (note the change in date), at OHLC in Herrigstad Hall. Families are encouraged to attend. It is open to the public. Jill has two icons in Oak Harbor’s St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Lutheran Disaster Response: Highlights of 2013 Thanks to generous giving, Lutheran Disaster Response was able to bring help and hope to families and communities around the world as they prepared for or recovered after disasters in 2013.

Gifts totaling nearly $10 million in fiscal 2013 (Feb. 1, 2012-Jan. 31, 2014) supported commitments of $1 million for immediate response to Typhoon Haiyan as well as ongoing support after Hurricane Sandy in the U.S., and continued assistance to millions of refugees in Kenya, Jordan, and other places around the world.

Working through a network of affiliates, partners and companions, LDR supplied shelter-repair kits, food, and clean water to typhoon survivors in the Philippines, offered case management and other needed services for survivors of the Black Forest Fire in Colorado; provided safe havens for refugees in Syria, the Central African Republic, and Uganda; and much more. Ken received the following e-mail from Philipp Zanko, one of our contacts at St. Katharina in Kazan: The war in Ukraine is the end of an epoch in my life. I remember my feelings in 1990s – it was a time of hope and optimism for Protestant churches in Russia. It looked like everything was possible.

Today we must start again from the very beginning.

I believe that we – Russian Protestants – didn’t do some very important things for our country. We thought that we would be able to survive in our own ‘church’ world – a sort of reservation for fastidious 7

We wish Reid and his family the best in their new venture!
