pastor might not remember your name, or even recognize you. (Sorry.)

But it is worth it, and let me tell you why.

An open letter regarding Easter Sunday worship

On Easter, we hear the best news ever recorded in human history. (SPOILER ALERT!) We hear that Jesus was raised from the dead, conquering sin and death. That sounds very churchy, I know, and I’m sure you’ve heard it before. However, you need to hear it again.

You need to hear it because you have new hurts this year that need to heal in the light of the resurrection. You have new sins which need to be taken off your shoulders by Christ’s forgiveness so you can stand up straight again. You’ve had new crosses to bear, and need to know the new life Christ brings. You’ve had new brushes with mortality, perhaps even new losses and fresh grief, which need to be countered by the promise that Jesus has opened a door to a life beyond this one. I know this is all true for you because it is true for every human being currently drawing breath, including me.

Dear Friends in Christ, reetings! Today I’m writing especially to those on our membership list whom we haven’t seen in a while. Our attendance numbers have been pretty good lately, but I know there’s a LOT of you receiving this newsletter who haven’t been to worship in a while.

Has it been since Christmas? But don’t worry – this letter isn’t intended to induce guilt or shame. On the contrary, this letter is about that little tug you still feel when Easter rolls around. I want to affirm that little tug calling you back into our sanctuary on Easter Sunday.

You see, you might be wondering whether you should listen to that little tug. Maybe this will be the year you give up on church altogether. Maybe this will be the year you decide to celebrate Easter by sleeping in and then raiding the kids’ Easter baskets for those Reese’s eggs you like so much. Maybe you’ll just focus on the ham. You might be thinking: what is that tug, anyway? It’s probably nothing more than a remnant of cultural memory from the Christendom era, right? It’s probably just an echo of your grandmother’s voice ringing in your head, nagging you about church.

That tug you feel has been put there by God. It is a hunger for the peace and comfort and joy we receive at Easter as we celebrate Jesus’ victory over sin and death. Don’t let a fear of awkwardness prevent you from receiving the gifts God longs to give you. These gifts are even better than those Reese’s eggs. They’re even better than ham. I promise.

I will be glad to see you on Easter Sunday. There will be no judgment about missed Sundays, no need for excuses – only gratitude that the Holy Spirit has reeled you in once again. And you know, our new people and our long-time active members will probably be reading this letter too, and I’m confident that as they do so they will be reminded to welcome you with sincere smiles and gracious hearts.

But what if it isn’t? What if it’s something more?

I believe it is something more. Jesus said the Holy Spirit blows where it chooses, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes (John 3:8). St. Paul said the Holy Spirit dwells in us (1 Corinthians 3:16). Martin Luther taught that it is the work of the Holy Spirit to call and gather us (Small Catechism). I believe that tug you feel is an ember of faith being blown upon by the wind of the Holy Spirit. I believe that tug to come to worship on Easter is you being called and gathered by God.

So listen to that tug. Join us for worship on Easter Sunday. But be forewarned: this might be the year the gospel really takes hold of your heart. And when it does, you might find yourself getting up early on Sunday mornings a lot more often.

April 17: Maundy Thursday potluck and worship

Here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, we have a longstanding tradition of wonderful people helping out in all aspects of keeping the church facility operational and well-maintained. Over the years, that’s meant volunteer crews mobilized to do everything from raising the walls to keeping those walls painted, as well as a host of smaller but still vitally important maintenance tasks.

And over the years, some of YOU, our most faithful volunteers have found you’re no longer able to be quite as physically active as you used to be. We hope you’ll still stop by to see how things are progressing (quality control is important!) and will keep our current volunteers in your prayers.

We’ll continue our Saturday work days as we work towards completion of the pipe replacement and other maintenance projects, and we also have some work to do during the week.

Thank you to everyone who is lending a hand! It’s how God’s people help take care of God’s house.

e are trying something new for Maundy Thursday this year! We W will be gathering in Herrigstad Hall, where we will have a combined potluck meal/worship service. Come experience worship similar to what the early Christians practiced as we remember that night in the Upper Room when Jesus shared a special meal with his disciples.

Please bring a dish to share. You may bring anything you like, but you are especially encouraged to bring foods which remind you of Jesus and his times.

Our potluck/worship will begin promptly at 6:00 PM, so please have your food ready to serve by 5:45.

ood Friday services will be held at 12:00 noon and 7:00 PM. Join us for a contemplative reading of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, along with prayer around the cross and special music from our choir.

The Theresa Ferguson Memorial Scholarship, an endowment to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church by the Ferguson family, continues to offer scholarships of $1000 per year for any type of post-secondary education. These scholarships may be renewed three times.

August 11 -15 this summer! It’ll be a beach-themed week, where kids will learn about 5 amazing parables, play outdoor games, enjoy daily crafts, and consume healthy snacks.

Here’s how you can help!

Coming up on Mother’s Day Sunday, May 11, there will be a fundraising brunch between the morning services. Join us to celebrate motherhood with good food, friends and family as we raise money to make VBS shine!

Also, keep a weather eye out for a bulletin board display in the narthex with giving opportunities. Just sign your name and pick an animal to donate needed items for crafts, etc., in order to make Fun with the Son! a success! Your support for Vacation Bible School is always appreciated.

Coming in May: Journey to Jesus’ Table On Sunday, May 4, Pastor Spencer will be offering his Holy Communion education event for young children (preschool through 3rd grade). This class is offered both as a preparation for first communion, and as ongoing education for children who are already receiving communion. We begin with a simple lunch, and then travel throughout our church facilities to hear some of the important meal stories in the Bible, working our way to the altar – where we learn about the meal we share with Jesus each Sunday. We’ll begin at 12:00 noon, and be done by 2:00 PM at the latest. Don’t worry – this engaging event with lots of movement and a variety of storytelling methods makes the time fly by! wish to thank Pastor Stroud for his home visits to us and a most timely visit at Swedish Hospital in Seattle just prior to my surgery.

Having one of my “pity parties” because we were alone – no friends or family around – in such a big hospital, it was so good to see his friendly, familiar face.

I also want to thank those of you who have been keeping me in your prayers. During those times when feeling low, I decided I should be thankful for my many blessings, and then I would literally feel those prayers come down and surround me in a blanket of love. So please keep those prayers coming! I have chemo ahead of me, and I’ll probably have a few more “pity parties.” With God on my side and with your prayers and cards with such meaningful words of support, I know I’ll continue to be sustained. Thank you.

The great drama of the bird nesting season has arrived on our island! OHLC’s Steve Ellis, past president of Whidbey Audubon Society, will share information on how birds establish territories, courtship practices, nest building, and the rearing of young. Nest box plans will be available, along with hints for providing nesting materials. If the weather allows and there’s interest, Steve will lead a short field trip afterwards to West Beach. Bring your binocs if you have them; Steve will have a couple pairs to spare, as well as a spotting scope.

JOB OPENING: Preschool Teacher’s Assistant After over 20 years of teaching at His Kids Preschool, Debbie Reetz will be moving on at the end of the school year to explore other life opportunities.

Therefore, Oak Harbor Lutheran Church will be hiring a new Preschool Teacher’s Assistant for the 2014-15 school year. Those interested in the position may pick up a job description and application in the church office. Applications will be accepted through Apr. 30, 2014.

ooly cotton ball and paper plate lambs smile from the classroom bulletin board as the month of March skipped in like a lamb. Will March go out as friendly pompom nose and coffee filter “fur” paper bag lion like the ones sitting next to the lambs in the classroom?

The preschoolers began the month talking about opposite kinds of weather. Then we continued with different types of travel in all kinds of weather. Galloping red, green, blue, orange and purple construction paper trains reminded the children of the delightful story Tracks by David Galef and illustrated by Tedd Arnold.

Cars zoomed around the car mat and bumped along the puzzle map as the student tested their driving skills with all sorts of land transportation.

Water play is always an enjoyable way for the children to learn about water transportation, and they also decorated their stick puppet submarines with foam stickers. The preschoolers were delighted with air transportation as Matt Harbaugh guided His Kids on a tour of the NAS Whidbey radar room and air traffic control tower. It was a wonderful educational tour for children and adults alike.

The month ended with decorating the classroom’s newlyinstalled fire suppression pipes with colorful cylinder-shaped paper wind socks and fluttering crepe paper streamers.

Our Special Students for the month of March were Lola Gates, Daniella Halstead, Grace McGrath, Harlynn Rogers, Jacob Stoffers, Weston Thompson, Arin Weatherford and Meredith Wienckowski.

His Kids will start the month of April with a week-long Spring Vacation and upon their return will jump right into spring and Easter preparations and activities.

If you have your calendar handy, please note we’ll be celebrating Preschool Sunday on May 4. The children will provide some special music at the 10:30 AM worship service and we’ll have a preschoolthemed reception afterwards.

(Congregation News[ with great sadness that we note the passing of Marguerite Welch 18 following a brief hospitalization. Her memorial service IwastonisheldMarch on March 26. Marguerite and her late husband Bert became members of OHLC in 1962. Our hearts go out to her daughter Colleen Hamblin and the rest of her family, as well as Marguerite’s many friends in the congregation and in the community. lease keep Gwen Solum in your prayers as she pulls up her deep P Whidbey Island roots and moves to a new home in Spokane where she will be closer to family. As of April 10, her address will be 520 E Holland Avenue, Apt. W112, Spokane, WA 99218. Gwen has been a mainstay of our Altar Guild for many years, and served on our Friday morning bulletin assembly crew. here in the world is Mark Ogren? At the moment, the answer is W South America! Mark is in the midst of 5 months of work and study; he arrived in Ecuador in February and now is on his way to Peru.

OHLC offers A Place at the Table You’re invited to view a Sundance film selection, A Place at the Table, a story of hunger in the United States. This free, community event will take place at OHLC on Friday, May 9, 7:00-9:00 PM. Discussion afterwards will be moderated by Lisa Clark, Director of the Island County Opportunity Council, and with participation by Jean Wieman of Help House and Vivian Rogers Decker of Spin Café.

Child care will be provided. Donations of canned food and freewill offerings are welcomed and will benefit Help House of Oak Harbor.

What is A Place at the Table? Fifty million people in the US – including one in five children – suffer from hunger and do not get enough to eat on a regular basis to be healthy and active. The film A Place at the Table follows three families struggling with food insecurity.

We see how hunger and obesity pose serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation and how food access issues could be solved by making healthy food available and affordable. The personal stories it tells bring to life the human implications of current policy, data and research. As a society we just cannot let this continue to happen.

When it comes to social change, one film can’t do it all, but it can set the stage – laying out the issues in a way that people can hear and building interest in potential solutions. Discussion will access ways to drive systemic change around food insecurity and impact the interconnected issues of hunger, poverty and obesity.

April focuses on World Hunger

E

LCA World Hunger is the ministry of the month, with an emphasis on the Lutheran Disaster Response. As you are well aware, many disasters have affected the world in recent times, both in the form of man-made and natural events. We especially think of the people living in refugee camps, who have lost their homes because of the war in Syria and from damage done by storms.

During April, we will highlight how the ELCA is partnering to help in Syria, South Sudan, the Philippines and in the United States in the aftermath of flooding, tornadoes and hurricanes. We will ask for your donations to be earmarked to the Lutheran Disaster Response. In addition, if you name a specific response such as Syria, South Sudan, Pacific Typhoon, US Flooding or US Tornadoes, then 100% of your gift will go to that designated area. Long-term relationships, giving to the Lutheran Disaster Response and the ongoing work of ELCA World Hunger make these efficiencies possible.

Sharon Magnuson, Associate Director of the ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal, will be with us from Chicago as the presenter for the Ministry of the Month Adult Class on April 6.

Carol Wall Spin Café will host an open public meeting on April 21, 6:00-8:00 PM at North Whidbey Middle School commons. The meeting will be an information sharing and brain storming session set up in a small group forum addressing homelessness and people in transition. Jim Campbell, town council member, will be participating.

Watoto Team says thanks (and maybe “Arrrrr!”)

A big THANK YOU from the Watoto Team to the congregation for supporting and encouraging us during March as Mission of the Month. It was a great month highlighted by the coming of the wonderful Watoto Children’s Choir and the dazzling daffodils! A big THANK YOU to Beckie Peattie for supplying dessert of Dairy Queen Dilly Bars for the choir dinner. They were a big hit.

We’re working on a Pirate Murder Mystery event at OHLC, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 26, so save the date and start thinking about your costume!

Roadside litter pick-up There will be a roadside pick-up along OHLC’s adopted stretch of Highway 20 north of Oak Harbor on Saturday, April 12. Meet at church at 9:00 AM and we’ll carpool to the site. If you can help, please make a note on the opportunity form in your Sunday morning bulletin or sign up on the sheet at the information desk in the narthex.

Friends, There has been an outpouring of love and concern for the people of Oso as we all try to come to grips with this sudden and tragic loss of life.

I have been in touch with those on the ground, including our closest congregations. They are reporting that the need people feel to react immediately is becoming a secondary crisis for the community.

Please hear that the immediate needs of Oso are being well attended to.

It will be the long range needs that will be more challenging. These families have not only lost their homes and all of their belongings, they have lost the very land their homes were built on. Our gifts to the Red Cross, Lutheran Community Services of Northwest Washington and Lutheran Disaster Response will help ensure the aftercare that will be needed in Oso and in other areas where our sisters and brothers face tragedy.

It is has been said often that the most valuable gift that we have to offer at this time is our prayers for the community, the families most directly involved and the entire response team.

We will make every attempt to keep you all aware of the needs as they arise.
