From the Heart s we were sending Ohlala! to press, the news came out about the tragic catastrophe at Villagio Mall… which sent shivers down our spines. It is deeply saddening that such a disastrous event could occur, and so close to home… Many of us have children of our own, so holding back the tears and clutching onto our babies a little tighter, we feel the pain of those who lost their loved ones, but can’t even begin to imagine what they must be going through. It’s truly heartbreaking. This devastation has profoundly affected, not only Qatar, but the surrounding region; it has made people stop and reassess their lives. It serves as a reminder that our life on earth is a fragile existence; that we need to live every moment as if it is our last; that we need to cherish that which is genuinely valuable to us, and offer our love unconditionally. No words can express that which can only truly be felt… but our hearts and minds go out to all those who are mourning. We are praying for you.

M

ilan’s via Montenapoleone store hosted the peaceful invasion of Louis Vuitton’s imaginary “Arc”. For Salone del Mobile 2012, dozens of fantastic animals, created with Louis Vuitton small leather accessories by the British artist Billie Achilleos, were the protagonists of a special exhibition to celebrate the Maison’s iconic savoir-faire. Starting from Louis Vuitton small leather accessories, Billie Achilleos created bizarre creatures inspired to the world of animals: beaver, armadillo, chameleon, grasshopper, squirrel, cat, owl, frog, snake, crab, duck, rooster and many others, to pay homage to the Maison’s savoir-faire and craftsman tradition, which since more than 100 years gives birth to fine and original accessories. The artist’s creations once again endorse the relationship, so fond to Louis Vuitton, between the traditional craftsmanship, which dates back to 1854 and contemporary art. “I am the sort of person who sees pictures in the clouds in the sky or in the bubbles inside the bathtub”, says Billie Achilleos. “I often see faces in the wallpaper’s flowers. When I started working on this project I stepped into a Louis Vuitton store looking for animals on the bags, as if they were already there, and it was just a question of opening my eyes to realise that a Damier Graphite key-ring actually was a beaver’s paw. Or that another accessory in Monogram canvas was actually the leg of a grasshopper. There’s no prearranged pattern,” she promises. “One moment there are a stack of bags or small leather objects in front of me, some hours later there’s a frog.” Although she graduated at Wimbledon College of Art in 2007, Billie Achilleos denies being an artist. “I make things that are difficult to classify,” she says plainly. “Light, amusing and a little strange.” Her creations are deliberately eclectic, from origami flowers as decorations for a luxury hotel to theatre puppets. In 2010 she imagined some 20 animals for Louis Vuitton, all of them made with small leather accessories, closed in glass jars and exhibited in the windows of London’s New Bond Street Maison. An owl, a rabbit, a rooster, a python… her fantastic creatures are presented by Louis Vuitton in New York on 5th Avenue.

“Light, amusing and a little strange.”

Styled The Italian Way As some of the top fashion designers in Italy descend on Doha, Ohlala! sits down with Antonio Grimaldi to talk about his life long passion and creative flair.

“Fashion is to love to show something that you have inside.”

“Fashion is to love to show something that you have inside.”

A

ntonio Grimaldi started young, designing his very first dress for his little sister, with his mother taking the role of tailor. Now an internationally renowned designer with a Haute Couture brand, he speaks of his love for fashion, nurtured from his childhood. “Fashion is my life. When I was a child I decided to be a fashion designer. I always liked to be creative with dresses; I couldn’t do anything else. I don’t have any hobbies; my work is my hobby. For me fashion is to love to show something that you have inside.” Brought to Qatar by Rome based Italian fashion and interior design consortium Altaroma, Antonio was here to showcase his collection in an inaugural Italian Haute Couture fashion show. Held at the prestigious St Regis Hotel, and sponsored by Commercial Bank, the event featured collections from several famous luxury brands and included interior design exhibitions as well as two fashion shows. Although Antonio has worked in the Middle East before, it was his first time in Qatar, and he was immediately charmed. “I am very happy here. I went around the souqs and Katara and they are wonderful,” he says. Antonio has travelled widely and this is partly where he gets his inspiration for his collections, which for him are more than just beautiful clothes. “With my fashion show I like to give a message. I don’t like women to go around with nice dresses without meaning. I think like a fairy tale, or something like that,” he explains. Collections are carefully planned and take around four months to produce. Antonio elucidates, “We start with the material first, then there’s the embroidery, then we start to sketch the collection. In January the summer collection is on the catwalks and July for the winter. “I like something rich but elegant that respects the body of the woman. The woman has to feel comfortable, elegant and free to move.” With the World Cup in 2022 and the continued growth of the economy, it seems like the eyes of the world are on Qatar and Antonio is keen to follow suit. “I know that Qatar is growing fast and I feel that there could be a good opportunity for me here. I know the Middle Eastern people; I know they are very elegant, they know how to dress. I feel I am learning from them and I hope to have a good relationship with Qatar.” Keen to share his talent and enthusiasm for fashion, Antonio also visited some of the universities whilst he was in Qatar to speak with the students. “I feel like I can give them good energy, advice and inspiration. I hope to come back and do more of this, ” he explains animatedly. Of course we are curious to know his favourite designer and he speaks highly of Galliano and Gaultier. Pressed on the up-and-coming trends for 2013 he is slightly more reticent but does reveal a few secrets about his forthcoming winter collection. “We are thinking about the winter now, mixing colours in a strange way and we are working on richer materials. The hot colours will be ruby and dark grey.” Antonio’s talent and natural flair for design is obvious in every piece he shows and his passion flows through him into to each design. We wonder just what matters most to him as a designer? “I love my job, so if someone falls in love with my designs then that is enough for me.” Well here at Ohlala! we are already head over heels. here did May go? It seemed to pass without notice, along with the cooler weather. As the temperatures climb ever higher it’s at this time of year I have to remind myself just why I love Qatar so much. Luckily last month there was a constant flow of great events and wonderful new stores and restaurants opening, so that not only kept me busy but served to renew my love affair with Qatar, regardless of the soaring temperatures! Despite loving living here, over the next few months I will feel the pull of the green, green grass of home. The Olympics are fast approaching in England, as is the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. So to celebrate all things British last month I attended the ‘Last Night of the Proms’. Performed by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, it was a wonderful concert with lots of flag waving, popular classics and British patriotic pieces; a little slice of Britain right here in the Katara Opera House. The opening of not only L.K. Bennett but also Louboutin in Doha resulted in some serious shoe shopping; did I mention my slight obsession with shoes? I appear to share this passion with the majority of ladies in Qatar as the popular “very prive Patent Pump” sold out within days of Louboutin opening. I guess we are set to see an increase in iconic red soles around Doha. Fashionistas from across Qatar flocked to the Common Threads pop up boutique at Katara Art Centre in May to snap up offerings from up-andcoming artists and designers. If you missed out this time stay tuned and I’ll let you know when the next one is! If you are desperate for a fashion fix then check out Zara’s newly opened store in Landmark. See my interview with the talented Antonio Grimaldi in this month’s Style section and likewise covet his breathtaking designs. The Anziq ball was a success with 70s outfits inspiring some imaginative moves on the dance floor! Not quite as ambitious as the B-boys that took over the Pearl-Qatar in May at the Red Bull BC One Qatar Cypher. A 4,000 strong crowd watched an electrifying evening’s Break dancin entertainment as sixteen g at th e Pear l-Qata contestants showcased their amazing r breakdancing moves. The winner, Lil Salah, will now go on to take part in world finals in Brazil. The talk on the town on new eateries is Strata at InterContinental Doha The City, fabulous views, cocktails and seafood, plus La Sahtaine, the chic French Mediterranean restaurant with live music at the Hilton. There’s also been unrestrained excitement regarding the opening of Jones The Grocer at The Gate Mall. With a wellstocked cheese room, pastry counter, charcuterie and café it could well be my favourite new daytime hangout and refuge from this heat. THE CAUSE

Giving Back

Nursing is a vocation, a calling requiring a level of compassion that not all of us possess. This month Ohlala! speaks to student nurses from the University of Calgary about their inspiration and the recent initiatives for International Nurses Week. 43

THE CAUSE

A

t the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ), they are busy training the nurses of tomorrow. Here it’s not just about lessons and note taking; the students at UCQ want more. This year they decided to mark International Nurses Week by giving something back to the community of Qatar. “We wanted to do something different and meaningful for the annual celebration of nurses. So we decided to stage a number of events with emphasis on giving back to the community,” explains Aisha Al Khayren, a Qatari student studying a bachelor degree at UCQ. A student committee was consequently formed and three excursions were planned. The first was a visit to Dhreima, a care centre for orphaned children, where the students delivered toys, games and books. Khaled Kamal, Managing Director of Dhreima, was clearly impressed by the students. “Nursing is a noble profession. Often the reason people get well is not because of the doctor but because of the nurse. It’s all about dedication and how you serve patients. Everybody has a job to do but it’s the ones who do it with dedication and love that make a difference. These students are making a difference.” The next field trip to Shafallah was hosted by Best Buddies, a non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Shafallah provides care for individuals with developmental learning challenges and here students socialised with residents and participated in craft making activities. Speaking highly of the students, Rania Abou Ghaida, College Program Coordinator at Best Buddies Qatar comments, “Having UCQ come here and spend time with our students is the kind of social integration that we strive for. It shows our students that there are people who care for them and that they’re accepted in the community.” Mohammed Riad, key organiser of the initiatives and a student at UCQ, also felt that the visits benefited him greatly. “I am now aware and better prepared to take care of the people in these institutions when I graduate,” he says. The nursing students finally visited Qatar Foundation for Elderly People Care Centre. Aisha is animated as she explains how the students interacted with the elderly. “We brought some traditional games along, like dominos, and they had so much fun. We joked with them, fed them, talked to them and we did henna tattoos with the ladies. They were so happy. These people have lost the spark, at least when we came we gave that back to them.” These students are the future of health care in Qatar. Compassionate and caring they are dedicated to helping the sick and needy. Each has their own motivations to become a nurse. Aisha explains what drives her. “I want to be a nurse because our country has given us so much, so we need to give something back. The number of Qatari nurses is very few.” Male nurses are even fewer as student nurse Nasser Al-Marri explains. “I think there are only six male nurses here in Qatar and they are from the older generation. So I said to myself ‘why don’t I take the lead, study nursing and encourage the males of my generation here in Qatar to enter nursing?’ I think it’s a noble job and I really believe in that.” It’s evident that these initiatives were not only a complete success but also beneficial for both students and community alike. Nasser summarises just what it felt like to participate. “We study, we learn, but this was my first experience with the community. I found myself a different person. For 21 years I have just taken from the community and from my family, so for the first time I was giving back to society, taking care of them, and using my time for a good cause.” Visit www.qatar.ucalgary.ca or call 4406 5200 44

War, it was like their shutters came down. It’s obviously still so raw and painful.” The Perfume Garden is incredibly well researched as Kate explains, “I talked to historians and people that had fought in the International Brigade; it was really helpful getting their perspective on the story. It’s heartbreaking; I was just so inspired by the courage and humanity of the people who went out there to fight for democracy.” Kate talks candidly of what she learned from writing the novel, “It made me appreciate the country that we’d lived in because you can glide along the surface of the culture of a place without ever really getting to grips with it.” Having written since she was a child, Kate also attributes reading to her success as a novelist. “I have always written. From a very early age I was writing diaries and plays. I also read a lot, and if you read a lot it inspires you to write.” However, she adds that times were hard at the start of her writing career, when she was juggling a full time job, children and her writing. “I used to get up at 5.30 in the morning and write for an hour before getting ready for work, balancing my keyboard on my husband’s sock drawer! I think if you really want to do something like this you need to write every day and you really need to commit to it. If you do a little bit every single day it adds up.” Behind Kate’s winning personality lies a definite determination. She laughingly quotes Journalist and Author Jack London as summing up just what it takes to succeed in such a self-motivating career, “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” With another book currently being edited and research already underway for her fourth novel, this is one quote Kate obviously lives by. ‘The Beauty Chorus’ and ‘The Perfume Garden’ are published by Corvus. You can order or download them from www.amazon.co.uk

B

orn in the wild and beautiful countryside of Devon, England, Kate Lord Brown now lives in the deserts of Doha, a place she actually finds no less inspiring than the green fields of her childhood. “I really love the art scene here — the vibrancy of the museums and galleries. I've also enjoyed great courses at Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation, such as their summer writing school.” Having lived in Doha for two years, she’s amazed by the changing landscape and skyline. “I think it’s fantastic seeing a city literally growing up out of the desert.” Kate has just published her second book, The Perfume Garden, coming only a year after her first hugely successful novel The Beauty Chorus. Whereas her first novel showcased the incredibly brave women of the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) during the World War II, The Perfume Garden switches cleverly between 2001/2 and the 1930's with the Spanish Civil War as a backdrop. Kate explains in what genre she places her latest creation. “It’s historical fiction but it’s also a story about family and there’s a good dose of romance in there as well. I think the underlying theme of the book is about the importance of family love, particularly maternal love, and to make the most of every single day.” The inspiration for Kate’s newest novel came from living in Spain whilst her husband, now a pilot, was learning to fly. It’s a place that obviously evokes fond memories. “We lived out in the orange groves in Valencia, where the book is set. I was a young Mum and my daughter was born there,” she recalls. Kate discovered that despite the outwardly sunny disposition of the Spanish people, the civil war was still an open wound. "The Perfume Garden really came about because I’d noticed that even when you spoke to the younger generation about the Spanish Civil

Add to that her mother’s determination and strength shown by the fact that she went back to university for a degree at age 40, and it’s obvious just what’s shaped Rachel into the woman she is today; a woman with a message for all Qatari women. “This is your country — lead it.” Already a successful businesswoman Rachel owns a consultancy company called Genviva in the UK. “I set it up as I was passionate about women leading change in business and society,” explains Rachel. “It’s based specifically around female leadership development within corporate environments, and entrepreneurship for women.” Her mantra is “empowering women to lead change” and that’s why she recently moved to Qatar; a country she already confesses to falling in love with. “There’s a huge opportunity here. I think women will ultimately lead this country. They have the right attitude, they are so educated and passionate, and that’s what countries need. What my personal experience will give to them is aspiration and hope to keep going, not to give up.” Women Leading Change Qatar (WLCQ), an initiative of Rachel’s, was launched in April 2012 and she already has the backing of several influential Qatari women. Indeed the Ambassador of the project, successful businesswoman Buthaina Al Ansari, shares the vision of the program. “My vision is to develop, nurture and promote Qatari women in line with our national vision, and WLCQ is the perfect platform to start this journey.” Along with Rachel she believes that it’s time for Qatari women to play a much greater role. “As Qatari women we need to take the lead in the development of our country in all areas of human, social, environmental and economic development. Now is the time to move forward as one nation. Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser has set the vision for Qatar, it is now our role to deliver it.” Rachel explains her goals for the long-term program, which she has been integral in launching. “I am developing Qatari women to own this program. It’s a knowledge transfer of expertise from expatriates, that’s the model. That’s also the onus of the plan, to develop, to nurture and to promote Qatari women in terms of emerging talent,” she explains excitedly. Her passion shines through and she’s animated as she speaks of the differences between the UK and Qatar. “I feel richer culturally and more inspired than I did in my 11 years in the UK. I am thankful and grateful for everything I can create. The energy in this country far outweighs

Buthaina, Ambassador for WLCQ

the energy in London, as the recession hasn’t really lifted. Here it’s all opportunities, but you have to find your place and show your value to society.” Rachel is thrilled with the growth of the initiative in just a few short months. “I’m so pleased with the progress to date. It’s like I’m living my vision. It’s all being done with integrity; I am very respectful of the culture.” There’s huge amount of interest in the program, which has already seen exciting offshoots from the initiative, the most innovative being the ‘Rising Star’ project. Director Axel Breuer, Owner of Voodoo Creative Partners, is directing and mentoring this unique and groundbreaking documentary. It will feature Qatari women in their own homes and will be submitted to global film festivals by the end of 2012. “Qatari women will self direct and self produce a documentary about the changes and their frustrations and aspirations,” explains Rachel. “There will be twenty women and Axel will show them how to set cameras up to actually capture the moment. It’s also a development program in terms of film making and we’ve got Qatari women from all walks of life that are really excited about the project.” Rachel Petero is already living her dream but this ambitious lady has worldwide plans. “I want to go global. I look at my business plan five years ago and it said ‘working with emerging nations’, that was my ultimate dream, and here I am.” She is adamant that nothing is impossible; it’s all about planning and self-belief. “When you put a stake in the ground that far ahead, it gives you a marker and a beacon, you have to have something to work towards. If you can visualise that, really believe in it, and align yourself to that vision every time you are doing something, then ultimately you will get there.” If you are interested in finding out more about WLCQ contact Rachel Petero by email at rachel@gen-viva.com

Embracing Motherhood

When classical singer Natasha Marsh discovered she was having twins it came as a bit of a surprise to the international opera star. She talks to Ben Whittaker about how motherhood has changed her life and career.

“Being a full time mum is probably the most exhausting thing I’ve ever done but it is also the most rewarding.

51

Celebrity Scoop lassical music has become ever more popular and the crossover success of artists from the Three Tenors to Katherine Jenkins has seen sales and public interest grow significantly over the last two decades. Established talent Natasha Marsh talkes about how her career and being a young mother has changed her outlook to life and music. Born in Wales in 1975, Natasha and her family moved to Oxfordshire where she spent most of her life. “My parents aren’t actually Welsh,” she says. “My dad was head of music at a school in Wales but we moved from there when I was young. I guess his profession had a profound impact on the eventual career path I took in life, although music has always been very important to me. My playlist was everything from Pink Floyd to Mozart so I had the widest possible exposure to music. “I started having professional lessons and people began to tell me that my voice had real potential. Then I had an audition at the Royal College of Music and really never looked back.” In 2006 Natasha signed an exclusive recording contract with EMI Classics and the first album release on the label, Amour, went straight to number one in the UK Classical Artist Charts. “It includes some of my favourite songs and it was amazing to have it nominated as Best Album the following year at the Classical BRITs,” Natasha tells us. A football fan, Natasha performed at the 2008 Football League Cup Final and also recorded the Queen of the Night aria from Mozart’s Magic Flute, which was used as ITV’s theme for UEFA Euro 2008. “Football inspires so many unique feelings and emotions. I love the passion it brings out in people and these are themes it shares with music.” Coming from a close family, Natasha had always wanted to have a family of her own and in 2008 she and her husband, Dobs Vye, announced the birth of their first son, Harley on December 17. “Having children puts a completely different complexion on life and your outlook changes in so many ways. Suddenly it’s not a case of just being responsible for yourself; there’s this tiny, helpless little baby who looks to you for everything. “When I was able to return to work I would take Harley with me everywhere because I couldn’t bear to be away from him. There he was backstage at 15 weeks while I was performing! However, my husband and I wanted another child and we also didn’t want the gap between them to be too big, so when I found out I was pregnant again in 2010 it was a real joy. What wasn’t expected was having twins!” On November 23, Natasha gave birth to Olivier Jay and Leo Xander. “Since that moment I really can say that life has never been the same again. I mean it in a good way but already having had one child I thought I knew what to expect. I was mistaken! “In the run up to the birth I continued to perform — as I had done with Harley — right up until the last few days, although I looked like an ocean liner at some of my latter shows! “I had made the conscious decision that I wanted to be at home with my children and I wasn’t interested in having a Nanny. The experience passes by so quickly and I wanted to be there to go

through it with my children rather than hear stories of what they had been doing from someone else while I was away at work. “I appreciate not everyone has this luxury but for me it was important and I’m glad I had that opportunity. I’m also incredibly lucky that I have a very supportive family around me that I can rely on. My children really do have some fantastic grandparents that we can call upon. “Our home is a bit of madhouse at the minute and I can certainly say being a full time mum is probably the most exhausting thing I’ve ever done but it is also the most rewarding.” Since the birth of her children, has she noticed any change in her voice? “My voice has certainly altered since the babies. It sounds richer, it’s perhaps a more fruity instrument than it once was.” So when can we expect to see Natasha Marsh back on tour or in the studio? “I am back in the studio now getting some ideas together and I am planning some shows for the summer. I’m a little cautious about what to pick next because I want to continue to carve my own niche in the industry. “Opera in general has been much better accepted over the last two decades and I would suggest that Pavarotti provided that crossover moment back in 1990 with the World Cup. Now we can comfortably dismiss the idea that you need to be from a particular sector of society to appreciate it. “I know it is often said, so it can start to sound like a bit of a cliché but music crosses all boundaries and I don’t believe anything creative needs to be exclusive.” And as she looks forward in her career, what ambitions still drive her? “There are still so many things I want to do. I’m a big fan of Sting and I would love to work with him and I want to continue performing and writing. My children have given me a new dimension that I want to explore as well. “Equally, there are still many parts of the world that I would like to visit and perform in; I’ve not yet ventured to the Middle East but it would be great to do a concert or even a tour in the region. With my love of football perhaps they’ll invite me over to perform at the World Cup when it’s held in Qatar!” So does she remain optimistic for the music business in general? “Overall I would have to say I am fairly optimistic but the whole process is certainly changing and I have seen that, even in the relatively short time I’ve been involved. The business is evolving and it needs to because elements are in trouble. The labels are no longer what they used to be and the Internet has brought a fresh series of challenges as well as opportunities for record companies." “I don’t think that the conveyor belt mentality that reality TV has introduced to popular music is helping much either. For instance, I found the idea of the show Pop Star to Opera Star laughable. To be good at anything you need to work at it for years and the desire to love your craft needs to overtake everything else, including the general obsession with fame that so many people have today.” With so much going on in her life, does Natasha still find time for herself? “With three small children there isn’t much room for ‘me’ at the minute. My biggest luxury is sleep. I tend to structure everything around the feeding patterns of the twins so if there is a free moment, I grab a glass of wine or go for a pub lunch. Of course I always socialise with friends when I can as well.”

“I’ve not yet ventured to the Middle East but it would be great to do a concert or even a tour in the region. With my love of football perhaps they’ll invite me over to perform at the World Cup when it’s held in Qatar!”

Beauty Buzz, Creating Rose Gold Looks With Bobbi Brown, Spa Delights & Fasting Facts: The Weight Loss Debate.

BEAUTY

“It captures the seductive beauty and intoxicating feeling of summer.”

Beauty Buzz Natural Radiance

Each skin type has its own specific characteristics and self-defence capacities but all can be affected by temporary imbalances, such as dehydration, excess sebum, redness or loss of tone and radiance, caused by external aggressors, stress or change of season. Clarins has the ideal solution with its Face Treament Oils as they naturally give skin the means to “recover” and regain a perfect balance. Composed of 100 percent pure plant extracts, they provide skin with a wealth of natural benefits, leaving it incredibly satin-soft.

Turn Up The Heat

All desire, all heat, all woman, the new Limited Edition Bronze Goddess Capri makeup takes its cues from the sophisticated and luxurious sun-drenched atmosphere of the Isle of Capri. The look is one of warm, glimmering gold and metallic hues and sun-kissed tones, complemented by rich brown and bright white, which call to mind the folding crests and hidden depths of the Mediterranean Sea.

They’re Real! The new mascara from Benefit, lengthens, curls, volumises, lifts and separates. The jet black, ultra-luxe and long-wearing formula creates a luscious look that won’t smudge or dry out. A specially designed brush, exclusive to Benefit, reveals lashes beyond belief for an instant wow! Celebrating 20

Nuxe is celebrating 20 years of Huile Prodigieuse, the first multi-purpose dry oil, with the launch of a new limited edition. Romance of the Rose 82

The inspiration behind Rose Gold, celebrity makeup artist Bobbi Brown’s latest collection, is simple and romantic: her treasured rose gold wedding band. Ohlala! speaks with the Bobbi Brown Regional Training and Events Manager, Rafal Straszewski, to share the secrets on wearing this season’s prettiest hue. Ohlala! FACE

First apply the Corrector under the eye using a concealer brush and blend lightly with your fingers. Then apply the Creamy Concealer using the same method and set with the powder. Using the foundation brush cover the whole face with foundation, excluding the eye area, dab the skin with the palm of your hands to achieve a uniformed look.

CHEEKS

Brush the Desert Pink Blush on the apples of your cheeks blending upwards across the cheekbones. Next sweep a Face Blender Brush across all five bars in the Wild Rose Shimmer Brick compact and lightly dust the highest part of your cheeks layering over the blush for a wash of colour effect.

EYES

As a base colour, brush Navajo Eye Shadow all over the upper eyelid. On the mobile eyelid, from the roots of lashes up to the crease, use the Rose Gold Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow. Then add the Rose Gold Shimmer Brick to the crease and inner corner of the eye. On the top lash line apply Caviar Ink Longwear Gel Liner and on the lower lash line use Espresso Eye Shadow. Lastly apply three to four coats of Black Everything Mascara.

LipS

Use the Beige Lip Liner to outline the lips, then apply Pink Peony Rich Lip Colour SPF12 with a lip brush. Finally, apply the Rose Gold Shimmer Lip Gloss.

TOP TIPS

As this look is created using pink tones on the eyes, cheeks and lips it is important to know that pink-toned eye shadows can accentuate under eye discolouration and eyelid redness, so it’s necessary to apply generous amounts of Corrector and Creamy Concealer under the eyes and light base shadow on the upper eye lid. When it comes to shimmer, moderation is key. Apply shimmer to just one or two features at a time. For lighter skin tones use the Rose Gold Shimmer Brick, and for darker shades apply the Wild Rose Shimmer Brick. Eye definition is especially important when wearing a monochromatic look. Apply a clean, crisp liner along the lash line and layer several coats of back mascara.

Fasting Facts The debate over the best way to lose weight has raged for a very long time, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to go away anytime soon. One popular and effective strategy is intermittent fasting for weight loss. Ohlala! gives you the lowdown from Craig Bunting, Head Tutor at LIA-Qatar, the first fulltime fitness academy in the Middle East.

“If you have the will power to abstain from the intake of calories the likelihood of you losing body fat will skyrocket.”

86

Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Patagonia

T

raditional methods of fat loss include eating smaller, but more regular meals over the course of the day in an attempt to maintain a higher metabolism, therefore burning more calories, and eventually resulting in losing weight. Eating five to seven smaller ‘meals’ each day replaces the traditional three, and while that may work for some people, others struggle with preparing and consuming so many meals. But fear not, there is another option that is proving to be both popular and effective: Intermittent fasting for fat loss. This method, although somewhat controversial, makes a lot of sense. Not only is it finding results in the lab, but historically and in some religions, which use this method during various times of the year. However, the method is not going to suit everyone. Intermittent fasting is based around the theory of abstaining from the intake of food for periods of up to 72 hours, before ‘normal’ eating resumes. However, the term ‘normal eating’ can have many definitions. The basis for this method is that our Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), is going to stay the same regardless of what we do in the short term. BMR can be directly related to things like our age, gender, food consumption and the amount of Fat Free Mass (muscle) one has. If for example, your BMR is 1500 kcals per day, your body is going to burn those calories day in and day out. If you have the will power to abstain from the intake of calories, the likelihood of you losing weight, or more appropriately body fat, will skyrocket, especially if you partake in an appropriate resistance training program. We eat because we want to eat rather than actual “need”. People learn when to eat, and there are things in society that act as cues, regardless of

Asics

whether we want or need food. Our ancestors would have had long periods of restriction, which would have pushed their bodies to the limits. Brad Pilon, Author of the book Eat Stop Eat, talks about how the term “I’m starving”, is used far too often, and is highly inaccurate. Another option for consideration is restricting the amount of calories that you consume during periods where you want to drop your body fat levels. By only eating one, or two smaller meals per day instead of the standard three square meals (plus snacks) is bound to result in a decrease of body weight and fat loss. There isn’t a right or wrong answer to the weight loss debate — everybody’s system is different and will require different methods. If eating five to seven sensible meals a day works for you, then continue with that until it no longer suits you. If you are strong enough, and can avoid the temptations of consuming calories for the sake of it, then intermittent fasting, or caloric restriction just might be the answer to all your problems. Remember to keep hydrated with plenty of water. Certain people must be careful with this type of strategy due to the psychological aspect. If you happen to have an obsessive personality, then maybe this isn’t for you. There is a chance that it can lead to other, more harmful conditions such as Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa in certain people. With your chosen form of ‘diet’, always be safe, sensible and patient. Think of it as a marathon rather than a sprint, and you WILL get there in the end. Remember to consult your physician and nutritionist before embarking on any new weight loss plan. www.personaltrainerdoha.com 87

THE COFFEE

Regarded to be an integral part of your living room design, the coffee table comes in many styles and sizes, Georges Karam explores.

o matter how you envisage laying out your living room there is always the point of departure or centre point, and this attribute falls on the coffee table, which is an essential element of interior design. If we go back in time there was no such a thing as coffee table. It is quite a recent object that has become a must in our interiors. In Europe the first tables specifically designed as coffee or low tables appear to have been made in Britain the late nineteenth-century, influenced by the Japanese trend and the Ottoman tea ceremonial. As fashion evolved many coffee tables were subsequently made in what is called the Revival Style, plus Renaissance, Louis XIV, XV, XVI, Baroque, Regency and Gustavian among others. A wide range of materials and finishes have been used to create coffee tables over the years, such as patina and gilded wood, or exotic essence of wood in the 1930s, Formica in the fifties, not to forget the rise of plastic and its derivatives in the sixties and seventies. In

Table

modern times tempered glass and metal have often been used as well as the upholstered version either in leather or fabric. Coffee tables were a late development in the history of furniture, and of course, since the invention and democratisation of television in the middle of the last century, it has shifted the way we layout our furniture accordingly to accommodate our new modern devices. The ideal coffee table is one that is in proportion with its surroundings. I would recommend a slightly larger size than what is required functionally, bearing in mind to keep around 50-centimetres of space between the seating and table. If the table is made from wood, and particularly a dark colour, it’s better to have a gloss or semi-gloss/satin finish as it is easier to maintain and less porous then the natural finish. Your choice will also depend on the type of style you’re looking for, such as modern or more classical. Whatever your inclination and style, place comfort before any other aspect when choosing a coffee table, as in the long run it is the first criteria for happy living.

With three different levels, each with a unique touch to suit your preferences, all will find something to their liking. Be seated on the lower level in the main dining area for views of the entertaining pianist, or the upper level for some more privacy. A specialty of the restaurant, La Sahtaine boasts an impressive, chilled glass cellar with an extensive range of expertly selected delights from across the globe, which will certainly please connoisseurs of the grape variety. A modern take on the concept is that diners can browse the venue’s iPad to select their beverage of choice; with detailed information and vivid images, this is a fun, quirky way to peruse what’s on offer. Sample a variety of freshly baked bread with a balsamic dressing created at your table, while you browse La Sahtaine’s extensive menu — tempting you with delectable Mediterranean pleasures — all attractively presented with attention to detail. Salad “Caprese”, olive oil preserved vine ripe tomato and meltin-mouth marinated Bocconcini is presented with a sweet and tangy balsamic reduction and anchovy fillet, garnished with basil leaves. “Chef Romel’s smoked lobster is an incredible gastronomic feat.”

A

s the lift doors open on the fifty-fifth floor of the new Strata restaurant you are transported not only to a sophisticated eatery but also to the pinnacle of Doha’s skyline. Floor-toceiling windows ensure breathtaking views and dining at night is particularly spectacular due to the close proximity of the bright lights of the ever-growing city centre. The décor is modern and chic with a black and white theme. Black Swarovski crystal studded curtains frame the stunning view and compliment the marbled tables and faux crocodile skin chairs. It’s an intimate restaurant with a subdued ambiance enhanced by dim lighting emitted from impressive tubular fittings, which overhang the majority of tables. An open kitchen runs the length of the restaurant and sports a striking glass front displaying sizable lobsters and huge langoustines on ice; tempting you with wares before you even open the luxurious menu. Make no mistake, this is a fine dining seafood restaurant. Even the menu feels expensive with pearlescent pages that sparkle as you peruse the fishy fare. There’s caviar and oysters in abundance, a choice of chilled Indulgence seafood platters and a selection of Western or Asian themed seafood. It’s a succinct menu and purely seafood — carnivores be warned, there’s no meat selection. On the Manager’s advice we select the Degustation menu, a chance to sample portions of the Chef’s signature dishes with each course accompanied by a glass of complementary wine. We begin our seafood soirée with a pleasant amuse bouche and then proceed with caviar perched atop a delicate blini served with a delicious Umami oyster and accompanied by a glass of Lanson champagne — just superb. Next is the herb butter poached tuna, perfectly seared it melts in the mouth and the Hugel & Fils ‘Gentil’ glass of chilled white wine is both fresh and fruity. Portions are small on this taster menu, so don’t be overwhelmed by the number of courses if you do debate the Degustation. Our next offering is a meaty poached Hamachi with zesty lime and coconut flavour, served with tasty baby bok choi. Saving the best until last, Chef Romel’s smoked lobster is an incredible gastronomic feat. Wonderfully fresh it’s still smoking under a domed glass platter when it arrives. The taste is beyond delectable. It’s unusually paired with a robust red wine, which surprisingly completely complements the smokey flavour of the lobster. Desserts are brought with a flourish, knowing they will provoke a gasp of awe. The Strata Compilation is a collection of six simply divine chocolate desserts. A chocoholics dream, each one seems to outdo the previous, leaving us unable to decide our favourite amongst such consistent excellence. Do make sure you ascend to even dizzier heights and try the bar above the restaurant, whether you dine here or not. Equally chic and trendy it boasts an impressive cocktail menu of the likes never before seen in Doha. The Alchemist has to be seen, and tasted, to be believed; the barmen here really are nothing short of scientists. The dishes at Strata are a feast for both palate and eye with unimagined piscatorial presentations that taste just as good as they look. Equally commendable is the fact that fruits of the vine, as well as the sea, are treated as an integral part of your dining experience here. With outstanding service, oysters, champagne and one of the best views in Doha, Strata is guaranteed to leave you literally feeling on top of the world. 97

Ancient CamBodia Richly engraved by its history, Cambodia is an ancient land ornamented with aweinspiring temples, which lead one to truly appreciate this culture of smiling faces emerging from the exotic east. Hussain Al Sairafi explores…

C

ambodia is a discovery of the ancient, opening the door to a modern world. Its charm is held by curious people of simple needs who take the chance to engage with genuine interest. They eagerly share their language and ask where you are from. Their knowledge lies in the depth of their past and you can find a tour or personal guide wherever Cambodia takes you. Bordering east Thailand, there are only a few direct routes to enter Cambodia. The two cities by flight are Siam Reap and Phnom Penh. Although Siem Reap is smaller, it contains the jewel of Cambodia, Angkor Wat, thus the exploration begins here. It was an expedited process to attain a visa upon entry, and a prompt and cordial welcoming followed as I was led to my driver. He offered his services for the day and the rest of my stay there. I naturally kept the pleasant flow of his services with his warmth and understanding of English. Immediately taking advantage of the good weather, I met him outside the historic looking Hotel Ree. Many of Cambodia’s hotels have a stately appeal and are well maintained. Top on Cambodia’s agenda, is Angkor Wat. While driving up the enormity of what’s to be seen becomes clear. The expanse of the Temple affirms that Angkor Wat is the largest religious constructions in the world. The complete layout of all the temples is on the same massive scale. Angkor’s past is painted with the weathering of its age. Dark and steep, deep and tall, it bears the marks of unbridled ruin. Many of the temples in Cambodia have become relics. They are only able to be preserved by the tenacious endeavour of a few who have the resources and power to maneuver the oversized blocks of concrete into the puzzle of past architecture. The temple Ta Prohm, dawns the memory of Laura Croft’s battles in Tomb-Raider. Silvery gold metallic trees intertwine and have formed roots over and around the temple making for a real adventure’s backdrop. Banteay Srei is smaller, but a masterpiece of restoration that began the process for all the temples. Its colour is warm toned highlighting the intricately engraved details. Phnom Phen welcomes you to the city life with a variety of sites in close proximity. It is the capitol of Cambodia and offers a quaint riverside walk, French inspired, where the local social life comes alive. Restaurants along this way also offer highly recommendable cuisine and drinks of all types. Nearby, the Royal Palace can be toured daily. You’re free to name your price at the two main day markets, then enter The National Museum which has artefacts dating back to fourth century A.D. A quick tuk-tuk ride will get you where you want to be in a hurry, even if you’re not. If you like the island life, take a short ride and enjoy a few days stay on the southwest coast. Sihanoukville, pronounced without the “k”, See-ha-nu-vee, after the last Angkorian King, is also a naval port stop. Here services are rendered beachside for any visitor’s convenience. Fresh barbecued seafood is a likely specialty on that order, as well as fresh cut fruit, or a relaxing massage of your wish. I took a boat ride to the secluded Bamboo island where only visitors and the island hosts who bring your food and drinks, reside. Untouched by inhabitants, the island remains a paradise.

Cambodia offers a highly cultural and lightly rugged landscape that is safe and friendly to travel. A captive audience will welcome you with smiles and offer their services. The vast temples and relics will transport you into an exotic world of ancient mystery and delight. It’s a place to discover your adventurous side. It’s a holiday in Cambodia.

COMPACT

So many fabulous cars to choose from, so little time for us ladies to explore them all. Ohlala!‘s Diva Driver, Sari Mabire, offers a helping hand by looking at a few of the most stylish available.

Mini Cooper Mini Cooper is a great pick for a first car, even though experienced drivers will have a lot of fun in it too. Thanks to its quirky British character and German engineering, the Mini Cooper is still as popular as ever. The endearing retro styling and highly customisable options keep attracting new fans. Add to it the sharp handling, eco-friendly driving and excellent all round performance especially in S and JCW trims, and you know why this is a fantastic choice for fans of compact cars. The Cooper has a unique blend of personality and performance in the cutest package.

Volkswagen Beetle Another classic car with inimitable styling and powerful engine, it’s no surprise that the Beetle became an instant hit when it was re-launched back in 1998. The 2012 model is completely redesigned and is a bit more aggressive than in the past, and at the same time a lot more functional and still unmistakably a Beetle. The redesign not only gives the Beetle more classic proportions, but also provides more legroom, a bigger trunk and a more natural driving position comparing to the predecessor. A fun car for a vibrant young lady!

102

Renault Clio RS 200 Hot hatch — French style! This is more than just cute looks, the Clio is actually a pretty nimble sports car and would suit a lady who likes to be in control of her car and who enjoys driving. The Clio is better suited to those with driving experience as it only comes as a manual version, however real sports car fans will find that as a bonus rather than a hindrance. It is a serious sports car — what else can you expect from Renault who has a history of supplying winning engines to the F1 cars. Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

If you want to squeeze your kids on the back seat opt for the Coupe; and if you wish to just cruise around with a friend pick the convertible Roadster, either will keep you a happy driver.

Ohlala! Stars Giovanni unveils your future for June Happy Birthday Ms Gemini The time of Gemini is a time of creativity, experiences and emotional advancement and none will benefit more than those of you who were born under this sign. If you have been feeling that relationships have been thin on the ground or generally unrewarding then everything could change for the adventurous ones amongst you in June. You need to start thinking outside of the box and also removing any self-imposed limitations. To this end you are often your own worst enemy. Do this and you will have more than just a birthday to celebrate this month; it could be the turning point in so many more ways.

May 21 – June 20

Gemini — at a glance

People who fall under the sign of Gemini are often adaptable, versatile and above all else, great communicators. They also tend to be witty, intelligent and impressively eloquent. Others can be drawn to their unique, youthful and lively outlook, and it is a trait which can be infectious to others, especially those who lack in self-esteem or confidence. However, they are also a nervous sign and much of their external bravado is sometimes masking an inner fragility that can make them tense and sometimes inconsistent. They are master manipulators when they need to be and possess a cunning and inquisitive nature that makes them skilled adversaries in business.

LEO (July 23 – August 22) Your natural affinity with air signs means that the month of Gemini will help fuel your drive and ability, meaning that you are likely to take advantage of some important opportunities this month, especially for those of you concerned with purchasing a new property. Libra (September 23 – October 22) Some of you have found that the first part of the year has not unfolded as you might have liked, with numerous challenges and unexpected hurdles seemingly throwing themselves in your path. A lot of this has to do with your own outlook in life and the fact that a process of change is required by you before things can improve.

VIRGO (August 23 — September 22) Although you are often accused of being quite formulaic in your outlook to life there are occasions when your sign can be encouraged to let its hair down and the energy coming off the time of Gemini should fill you with confidence and allow you to shed that skin of conformity. It will allow others to see you in a very different light. Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) You may find yourself in the middle of a big conflict this month and much of that has to do with the fact that you are trying to juggle too much and shoulder an excessive amount of responsibility. You need to be a bit more realistic about your situation and dispense with anything that is unnecessary at the moment.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21) If you have a plan of action when it comes to work then now is the time to employ it because the dynamic energy of Gemini is urging you forwards to greater things. Get your business plan right and your focus solely upon the ambitions before you, and nothing can stop you from succeeding apart from yourself.

Capricorn (Dec 22 – January 19) For many of you, this month is going to be all about assessment and decisions, especially where matters of health and family are concerned. If you have not been feeling yourself then don’t hesitate to act upon a solution whilst internal struggles between relatives could drag you into a fight you are not really up for!

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Over the last few months you have been weighing up your options in life and this month circumstances could see you forced into a hasty decision simply over which direction to take a romance that has blossomed in the background for some time now. Sacrifices are on the cards and the answer won’t be achieved without tears.

Pisces (February 19 – March 19) June could see a family visit turn into a bit of a disaster when a relative is taken ill and all your plans are pushed into turmoil as a consequence. It doesn’t mean you won’t be able to salvage something positive from the incident, just that your expectations might need to be reduced a little in advance!

Aries (March 20 – April 19) This month is going to offer you a great career opportunity and though it may be unexpected, you would be foolish to turn it down. Additionally, a relationship that has struggled under the weight of family pressure and work commitments could find some relief when a trip abroad brings you closer to a partner once again. 126

CANCER (June 21 – July 22) You are a naturally introverted, shy person but to achieve that burning ambition in your career you are going to have to take a few more risks and be confrontational. It’s no time for sitting at the back of the room. You have to stand up and speak out. If you can manage this, you will be one step closer to your goals.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You have a lot of work on your hands this coming month but it is focused on subject matter you enjoy. It will help open up a new dimension to your life that is going to bring rich rewards, creatively and financially. On the romance front, time away with a loved one will prove enlightening and reaffirm your commitment to each other.

"I had the honour of finally meeting Karl Lagerfeld. We sat and discussed a number of creative ideas, and may I just share, he said I had "the face". Not sure entirely what he meant by that but hey, it's Karl Lagerfeld, so okay. Ultimate compliment, fully accepted."

urrently, I'm in the pretty little Kingdom of Monaco. Soaking up a sunrise view as I recover from the glamorous hell that was this year's Cannes Film Festival. Seven days of backto-back events, premieres, red carpets and cameras as every major Hollywood, fashion and music type descended upon the South of France. Every night, was a highlight. I had the pleasure of attending this year's dose of grandiose with my dear friends Mohammed Al Turki, Michelle Rodriguez, Zak Tanjeloff and more. On arrival, it was straight onto Eva Longoria's cocktail bash, which was on a boat, which quickly filled to a point of silliness, which my dress didn't really appreciate. We then moved on to what was one of my favourite galas at Cannes 2012: Petra Nomcova, Paul Haggis and Sean Penn's "Haiti Carnival", where Sean's passionate words on a human's responsibility to care for mankind resonated with every bone in my being. It was lovely seeing old friends (who I just kept on seeing), as well as meeting with a number of Haitian residents, who flew in for the affair in support of Petra's Happy Hearts Fund, Paul's Artists For Peace & Sean's JPHRO organisation. The following day saw one big boom of a yacht party hosted by Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Al Turki. It was on the Omega, an 80-foot beast of a boat that still couldn't accommodate the number of guests flocking on various piers attempting to make their way to the popular film producer's soiree. Mohammed was in town promoting two of his upcoming film projects, At Any Price, a Ramin Bahraini production starring Zac Efron, and Arbitrage, which many say will finally see Richard Gere winning his first Oscar. Post the unforgettable Al Turki/Omega reception, was the Lawless after-party — a great movie, that I'm pleased to say sees and celebrates the return of the alpha male on the big screen (it's about time). Other affairs included CAA's gathering of A-list talent at Le Baron, Chopard's beautiful dinner and dance, set in a secret location that simply took my breath away, P.Diddy's boat bash (relaxed and informal, my kind of party), Abu Dhabi Film Festival's Cannes celebration (great seeing the region represented), Di Grisogono's infamous Antibes showdown (which saw a pretty boring performance by Taio Cruz) and Kanye West's premiere of his short film Cruel Summer. In case you don't know, Cruel Summer was shot in Qatar, in association with the Doha Film Institute. The film's makers had told me of their interest to respectfully

infuse and celebrate Lawle ss: Arab culture, which exchan Mohamme dA ge film they did rather ideas l Turki & at the J well. The installation premi essica Cha s ere's a fter-pa tain (seven screens, for an all round rty. visual experience) is an interesting concept, and despite the film not making official selection in Cannes, I respect the fact that Kanye & co. decided to rent a car park, set up the necessary, and outh n the S screen the film, anyway. ds upo n e c s e d Killing Me Softly, Brad usness e. pendo on stu of Franc i Pitt's new film, was h s a rd: F Chopa probably the most talked about premiere at this year's festival; I suppose as a result my expectations were extremely high, and err, well, in short... they weren't met.
