Kimbra — Somebody We Should All Get To Know

Editor-in-Chief Kirsty Edwards-Harris

All You Need Is Love… song made globally popular by the Beatles in the late 1960s, ‘All You Need Is Love’ was written to spread a straightforward message, which could surpass all language and cultural barriers, with the aim of uniting hearts and minds across the world — that love is truly everything. What a lovely thought — and certainly one to remind ourselves of on a regular basis. While February is most often associated with Valentine’s Day and romantic love, take the time to make all those you care for feel special, whether it be your family, friends or colleagues, or perhaps even a stranger. This month can be one of the hardest times of the year for those alone, much as birthdays, and other family celebrations such as Eid and Christmas, so offer kindness and make a difference in people’s lives — sometimes all it takes to make someone’s day is a smile. To be able to love another unconditionally without surrendering your power, your own identity, your true self, not only that of the labels you are indentified with such as wife and mother, sister and daughter, you must first learn to love your own self. This means loving every part of you (even those things you may not like), your attributes and faults, successes and failures, your lumps and bumps. Embrace your self and your inner beauty to be able to accept your self exactly as you are, and know that you’re good enough. Be kind, treat your body as a temple, honour your inner voice and respect your path. Only then, when you are a whole person, can you truly love another.

Her rose-tinted pink shades are Prada Mary Janes with floral appliqués from the Spring 2013 collection, and the finishing touch is a gold Louis Vuitton bracelet.

Diane Kruger Actress and face of Jaeger-LeCoultre, Diane Kruger certainly knows how to turn heads looking beautiful in a striking floor-length tiered Prabal Gurung chiffon gown from the Spring 2013 collection. The blush satin Brian Atwood platform ‘Karin’ sandals and Crow’s Nest ‘Dream Feather’ diamond earrings perfect the look and she adds a playful, funky edge by carrying a Charlotte Olympia Domino Pandora Clutch featuring swarovski crystal detailing.

Uma Thurman Actress Uma Thurman makes a statement in this chic custom-made black three-button Atelier Versace suit with satin trim on the occasion of the premiere of her new film ‘Playing for Keeps' held at AMC Loews Lincoln Square. Fitting her perfect figure flawlessly, the suit sets off her long, blonde locks and hot red nail polish. THE CAUSE

Speaking the Language of Love

M

ubarak Khalifa Al-Hadi’s experience in helping people in need spans more than three decades — starting from when he was a volunteer for the Bahrain Red Crescent Society in 1970, before becoming a bonafide member a year after with the official establishment of the Society in 1971. Becoming executive director for the Society in 1993, Mubarak has since been at the helm of what is seen as one of Bahrain’s foremost institution that provides multi-faceted assistance to individuals and communities in desperate need for help, in Bahrain and globally. From education, to medical and financial assistance, through to incomegenerating projects and skills-building capacity programs, and several other Social projects, the BRCS under Mubarak’s direction has had several achievements, many of them untold. “We do the best we can within the Society’s ability and resources, but whoever knocks on our door, we never, ever turn away,” he beams. Over the course of his tenure as executive director, the Society’s services and achievements have been quite remarkable. In the past year alone, it was able to extend assistance to 400 families — offering help financially and in-kind, such as food, clothing, eyeglasses for the elderly, wheelchairs, medicines and more. A 22

Nothing can be nobler than the act of giving, without expecting any reward — in any way, shape or form. Ohlala!’s Karina Lazarraga talks to the Bahrain Red Crescent Society’s (BRCS) executive director Mubarak Khalifa Al-Hadi, to find out how the society will chart its course in 2013 and beyond, whilst achieving its core principles as a humanitarian agency.

committee annually reviews the case of each family to assess whether they need further help or not. The BRCS currently has two Mobile Elderly Units with a team that provides care-giving services and regular visits, ensuring that whatever assistance is required is given to the elderly beneficiaries. The Society also runs two nurseries to help families with their children’s education up to the period when they join primary school. Annually, they also carry out a massive blood donation campaign, which encourages individuals, groups and companies to participate and donate blood. This is in addition to the blood donation drive that they undertake on a daily basis — in cooperation with hospitals and other local charities. Hence, the Society’s Blood Bank Committee is proud to report that Bahrain’s adequate supply means the kingdom never has a need to import blood from other countries — all thanks to the tremendous support and generosity of donors in Bahrain. “This program is doing very well since we started it in 1971, and we are very happy that people are so willing to contribute to its success,” Mubarak tells us. Also noteworthy is the ‘First Aid at Each House Project’, which has seen a staggering 26,000 graduates since the Society first implemented it in 1971. The First Aid course is offered weekly and available in Arabic and English, and is free and open to the public. Those interested only need to register and fill out a form available from the Society. They can participate as individuals or through their respective companies or institutions. Other health projects involve courses and lectures in Basic Health Education, Hygiene and Sanitation as well as Health and Safety. As part of their social development program, they have recently had 1,500 female graduates who were participants in various courses, such as Cosmetology, Tailoring and Basic Fashion Design as well as income-generating projects. Last year’s ‘Annual Ramadan Assistance Program’ touched the lives of more than 4,500 families in the kingdom, providing them with cash and in-kind items, thanks in greater part to the multitude of donors who course their contributions through the Society. When it comes to the scope of their work, the Society goes beyond helping only locals by also having global beneficiaries. Their international projects currently in operation can be found in: Maldives - Psychiatry Centre for the Elderly; Pakistan - schools, health centres and income-generating projects; Sri Lanka - building of 75 houses in cooperation with local charities; Kabul, Afghanistan - Homes for the Elderly and other social projects; Thailand - school buildings, a project which started after the 2004 Tsunami Disaster; Somalia - school buildings, other small projects; Indonesia – under negotiation to build a hospital; and finally in Gaza where they help in providing medical and food aid as well as other assistance in cooperation with other Gulf countries. In line with the 2020 Strategy of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Mubarak says BRCS constantly works towards giving their very best to achieve the seven core principles of the Federation, which are: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. Mubarak sees himself and the Society taking a strong lead in seeing the Federation’s principles in action — especially on the impartiality principle. “It is something that we not only need to push more, but to also let more people know about. Our mission first and foremost is to help people — regardless of their race, religion, political affiliation or nationality,” Mubarak emphasises. “For 2013 and in the years down the line, I would like for us to be able to help more families, individuals and institutions. We want to continuously build on the skills and capacity of our staff and volunteers, sending them to training abroad, as well as inviting experts from the Federation to come to Bahrain to provide lectures and training. We are looking at many ways to improve ourselves so we can help more people,” quips Mubarak. BRCS is an organisation that does a lot on its own, but in an age where we live in more interconnected ways than ever before, Mubarak strongly believes in partnerships. “We rely heavily on the relationships that we continuously build with our partners, without which it would be difficult for us to undertake our mission. The more help we receive, the more help we can also give,” he stresses.

Young Spirit Creativity and ambition are the forerunners of success. An increasing number of women continue to emerge as successful in many spheres, including the world of art. It is indeed refreshing when these talented professionals are young. Mobeena Inam focuses on the youthful and vibrant photographer, Summer Ameen-Weeks and finds her as fresh as a ‘summer breeze’! 24

childlike spirit and the ability to marvel at the world around us is an admirable quality few adults can retain throughout life. Combine this with professional expertise and creativity, and you have someone who is likely to be the envy of us all. Summer Ameen-Weeks is such a person. This vibrant, 29-year-old Bahraini mother-of-two is a talented fine art and lifestyle photographer, and an entrepreneur with her own studio in Muharraq. The owner of Summer Weeks Photography, she specialises in child and family portraits. Graduating from Ibn Khuldoon High School in 2001, Summer went on to the University of Toronto for tertiary studies in Anthropology and Sociology. Her creative urge soon took over, and to change her career path to photography, she took courses at the London Film Academy and the University College of Creative Arts in the UK. She subsequently earnt a First Class Honours Degree in Filmmaking from Middlesex University. As filmmaking incorporates many principles of

“By merging fine art and lifestyle photography, I offer images that are artistically appealing as well as being personally meaningful.”

photography, it enabled her to develop expertise in both these areas. Her childlike spirit, maternal instincts and keen eye for aesthetics, drew her to specialising in photographing babies and young children. When asked how she engages children for their photo shoots, Summer explains that it all comes down to “approaching them with sensitivity, an understanding of their developmental stage and interests, and a whole lot of patience. The patience part is easy for me because when I envision the beautiful fine art images that I’m going to create for a family, the wait is so worth it!” Fine art photography is about creating compelling images that are beautifully crafted. The lighting, styling, choice of location, and editing is chosen with the intention to create a work of art that clients are proud to display in their homes. Lifestyle photography, on the other hand, is about capturing natural expressions that tell people’s stories: the connection between a mother and her brand new baby, the laughter that siblings share over a private joke, or a thoughtful moment a child has in between running around. Summer tells us that, “By merging the two styles, I offer images that are artistically appealing as well as being personally meaningful to my clients.” Her greatest joy in being a child photographer is the knowledge that the images she creates will be passed on as family heirlooms through generations to come. This gifted woman also loves the creative and technical aspect of photography and has spent countless hours training at workshops and reading about lighting, camera settings and retouching skills. “My biggest challenge is striking a balance between photography and my personal life. It’s an extremely time consuming field and requires

a lot of energy,” she exclaims. A photo shoot may last one to three hours but behind-the-scenes details like fine art editing, retouching and design can take anything from six to ten hours. Summer grew up in a home where music, art and creativity were encouraged and appreciated. “My dad documented our childhood performances through countless photographs and videos; that is what first sparked my interest in photography and film. I’ve been taking photos since I was 16 years old. At that age I was inspired by black and white fine art photography, and mainly photographed buildings and still life objects,” she reminisces. The passion for child portrait art emerged when Summer had her first child in 2009. Online fine art images of babies inspired her to take similar photographs of her own son and by the time her son had turned six months, she started Summer Weeks Photography through which she offers quality portrait art specialised in maternity, babies, childhood and family. Interested in both film and photography, Summer offers photography and video directing services in her commercial work through a separate service called Studio Summer.

Woman in Power

Design Brilliance While most people think acrylic is something you put on your nails, Anne Pascale Chataing, the woman behind the French furniture and interior design company Lisaura, has other ideas, as Josie Hill discovers on meeting this passionate, driven and highly successful Woman in Power. Images by Abshar @ Creative Design & furniture images courtesy of Lisaura

I

t is in the blood,” says the 47-year-old mother of three, Anne Pascale, as she explains the background to starting her furniture and interior design company in 2003. “My parents were both in business, and I followed their footsteps, I went into the interior design and furniture business and did that for 22 years. “But I always wanted to start my own company. I was always very interested in technical and innovative products and one day I discovered an acrylic material and I decided to create a new concept by mixing wood and this technical material, which had never been used before in this way. “It may look easy when you see the results but believe me you have to make many prototypes. It took me 18 months to get the material right, work out the techniques and make the moulds.” The result is stunning, as the acrylic material can be inlayed with any number of products such as gold flecks, shells, flowers and fabrics, and then moulded to make all kinds of things from stair panels to chairs, vases, tables, lamp shades and practically anything in the decorative line. Anne Pascale was joined in the business early on by her husband Jacques who, also with 22 years of experience working in the manufacturing of interior design products and finishings for luxury companies, brought a wealth of business know-how to Lisaura. Jacques tells us, “She was in creation and I was in construction, so we complimented each other. We began by selling in trade fairs in France, Germany and Dubai. But with most of our clients being located in the Middle East, it seemed the logical step to move here.” So in 2010 the couple moved to Bahrain then relocated to Doha a year later. Since then Lisaura has expanded and is now a one-stop shop for interior design, working with other companies to source products for their client’s needs, and also working closely with the French architect Edward François. “Edward’s focus is in sustainable buildings, so as soon as we meet with a client who wants to build sustainably we connect the two and work together,” Anne Pascale says, “this is something we also feel strongly about — the acrylic we use is entirely recyclable, you can melt it down and remould it into something else.” Anne Pascale draws inspiration from “completely everywhere” and has even reinvented items from mechanical parts on cars to radiator grills into plant pots, lampshades and other stylish end products made by Lisaura.

With ten years behind them now, and orders coming in from many of the top hotels in Doha and from VIP clients around the Gulf, Lisaura is on the verge of making it big. But the couple are modest about their achievements and it is clear that neither one is in it for fame or glory, but for the enjoyment of working on something great, something unique and of course, of working together. “We should always be modest, because I think it’s the best way to be able to approach very different people, and absolutely my parents educated me to be this way,” says Anne, “where will being arrogant get you? You have to always be modest and friendly to be approachable and respectful of others to be able to do business. But also we are passionate about what we are doing and we love to be creative, and when we get it right, it makes us happy to see our customers are happy! “We have chosen Qatar for the vision of its leaders and their amazing bet on the future. The projects here are very ambitious, and we want to actively participate in this exciting development. This is our hub for the entire Gulf.”

Kimbra — Somebody We Should All Get To Know Paden R Vaughan spent time at the Rhythm & Vines Festival in New Zealand and met up with one of its main stage act stars, Kimbra, an artist destined for big things in 2013.

A

s I entered the Waiohika Estate house, all the glitz and glamour of the magnificent mansion seemed a far cry from the exciting and almost chaotic atmosphere of the Rhythm & Vines Festival, taking place just metres away. I was there to interview singer/songwriter 22-year-old Kimbra, a native New Zealander with a larger-than-life on stage persona but a much more modest and down-to-earth personality off stage. Born Kimbra Lee Johnson, she grew up in Hamilton, the daughter of a head doctor and an orthopaedic nurse. At a very early age she began writing songs, and when she was 12 her father bought her a guitar, and so she found her direction in life. “I didn't dream of having my name in lights; music made me feel very elated and I wanted to be able to use that to make others feel the same. I knew it would always be part of my life very early on. It was never something I decided to do; I just felt drawn to it. “I had plans of going to university, but it just didn't feel natural; I knew in my heart that music was the path for me, and I feel it has always existed for me, deep in my subconscious.” And her talent seemed to match her determination; she won the well-established New Zealand competition Rockquest at just 14 years old. After that, it was clear that this young Kiwi was one to watch. Early public performances included singing at the Waikato Times Gold Cup race meeting and singing the New Zealand national anthem in front of 27,000 people at the 2002 NPC rugby union final. In 2007 she won the Juice TV Award for Best Breakthrough music video for her single ‘Simply On My Lips’ and it was at this point that she came to the attention of ex-Independiente Records boss Mark Richardson (of Jamiroquai and Paula Abdul fame) and his newly formed management company. “When Mark called and offered me the opportunity to record an album, I knew instantly that it was meant to be! Soon after I signed and relocated to Australia.” Having released her debut album 'Vows' internationally earlier last year, with influences from Stevie Wonder all the way through to Guided By Voices, Kimbra’s musical style has been

29

Celebrity Scoop

classified as jazz-inspired electropop, fused with catchy melodies and an often unpredictable quality that has won her critical acclaim. To many, her unforgettable appearance in the global chart success ‘Somebody I Used To Know’ by Gotye, brought the young star justified global recognition. “Playing Coachella festival in the US was a truly unforgettable experience; to have gained such a wide reach across the globe is something I am eternally grateful for. But for me it's always and will always be more special playing at home in New Zealand. “I've been lucky to have worked with some fantastic artists and incredible people and although many people like to focus on the negatives of the industry, there's so much that's positive about it. I believe this overrules any negativity.” So what lies ahead for this determined young performer? “I'm into the second album now; which is a fresh slate for a new year. I've not stopped writing for a second. Like I said: music will always be a part of me! And there's no better place to do what I love than in my home country.” 30

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

And after seeing her main stage performance at December’s Rhythm & Vines festival, it's safe to say that for Kimbra, music is her destiny. But as her star rises and the commercial aspects of the music industry begin to influence her career, is she comfortable merging her creativity with the obvious demands of what is ultimately a business? “It’s a little scary when you suddenly begin to see your music interpreted on a completely different scale, but I believe the key is to remain true to the ideals that brought me here and to never allow the commercial interests to compromise my craft.” Daring, eccentric and certainly not your traditional pop star — she is nevertheless exactly the kind of personality the industry needs, and 2013 should see this huge talent globally recognised. 'Vows' is available through all media outlets and for those of you keen on learning more about Kimbra be sure to visit her website at www.kimbramusic.com

Of Polish origin, Janek grew up immersed in the French culture, where travel and the Arts became second nature to him. His style is imbued with the influence of his many experiences, which Janek believes is integral to the growth of all, as it enables them to become a more rounded person, fueling the imagination, and so their creativity.

Has creativity always been an intrinsic part of who you are? Janek Deleskiewicz. Ever since I was born, I’ve always been creative in different ways, such as drawing, music and painting. As a child I discovered different ways of practicing creativity and it became a game. I took imagination and representation and linked them with the moment. I was very influenced by the 50s, 60s and 70s, it was normal for me to imagine what could be next and have the representation of the world in mind. As a child, were you immersed in the creative world? JD. My mother was French and a director of a private school, my father was Polish and in business. Both were integral to my upbringing and creative nature. My father went to England during the war, and then joined the army to fight in Norway; afterwards he went to the North of Scotland then came to France. The interesting stories of his travels, and his ability to speak many languages, helped to develop my imagination and fuel my interest for travel.

FASHION How has your culture influenced your designs? JD. My family culture, Europe all along my life, the difference between countries, travelling to China, the United States, the perceptions of culture are totally different to each other. It’s lovely to meet people and get to know them and where they come from.

Of all your creations, which is your personal favourite? JD. All the watches and different expressions we develop, as well as those coming from past, I like for different reasons. New innovations in recent and contemporary watches are very important for me. What advice would you give to people when buying a watch? JD. It depends on the personality, certain characters know what they want and don’t want. For a woman I may propose the RendezVous watch, and perfect craftsmen work on it — one of the best new developments there is. Many women prefer to find their own watches on their travels. Like reading a book, it’s important to know what you are buying. It’s necessary to learn and educate yourself, so you can understand what you wearing on your wrist.

As an artist yourself, who do you most admire and why? JD. There are many artists in my mind, from Van Gogh, Picasso and Salvador Dali to Andy Warhol, but I also admire the actors and directors of movies. In this career, it’s necessary to know many things in order to develop, such as dancing, music, theatre, movies, painting, sculpture and Art nouveau. I discuss with young designers if they play instruments outside of work, or are a painter etc. as it’s necessary to live with an active education beyond school and work. From where do you draw your inspiration? JD. Travel, life experiences; I went to Mauritius at Christmas for example, which was very important for me to share, to embrace the culture. It’s nice to have change in life; it helps to understand what can be the next innovation, the next watch. 44

What formal design background do you have? JD. I’m unusual in this industry in that I have a technical background as many designers go to artistic schools. It’s an advantage for me, as it’s very important to have knowledge of the technical aspects of the business. It means that I can easily discuss in the factory with the engineers. After my technical baccalaureate I went to an art college. After hours I went to a private school for further education in drawings, painting, sculpture etc, and discussed with friends and played music with them. I had a very eclectic education, many years of different influences and artistic avenues; it’s great for developing the imagination.

My mother practiced music and educated my brother and sister and I in the Arts. We got to experience theatre, concerts, opera and exhibitions from a young age. I believe it’s very important, necessary even, to learn things outside of school such as these. All the different things we do socially also have effects on the watch industry.

Is there a particular watch that would be the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day? JD. We work on collections every year for Valentine’s Day and also propose personalised engravings. It’s a nice moment to show sentiment to each other and a watch is a natural gift to offer to your loved one on Valentine’s Day. We also have a new Reverse with a Valextra strap. Which Jaeger-LeCoultre watches would you advise women to invest in this coming Spring Summer? JD. Depends on what you’re wearing, the seasonal trends, what activities you are doing. Perhaps in the summer, you’d prefer to have white strap or in a lighter colour to adapt to your clothes. It’s useful when you go on holiday to wear sportive watches, as they can be used in all conditions.

“Like reading a book, it’s important to know what you are buying. It’s necessary to learn and educate yourself, so you can understand what you wearing on your wrist.” What has been the biggest challenge in your career and how did you overcome it? JD. The biggest challenge is to imagine the next collection because we are working two years in advance of the current one, and now we must think for 2015. It’s not easy to imagine the choices of men and women everywhere in the world two years into the future. But it’s so exciting to discuss options with the team, in different ways, what’s the next challenge. We start with nothing, only the white paper and imagine the future. We don’t know the trends in two year’s time; we need to imagine what these can be. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? JD. Always be satisfied with what you do, if you are not enthusiastic about what you can do, it can be a great enemy of the future. I must be very careful when finishing the development of a new product, as I want to know exactly what can be better for next time.

What are your creative aspirations for the future? JD. To speak with kids and the new generation because I started with Jaeger-LeCoultre 20 years ago, and am now working with my team of young designers and some of them are in their 20s — some weren’t even born when I started to work with the brand. It’s very important to speak with the next generation as they will be different, and they are the future. What do you enjoy doing in your own time? JD. What I love to do is to play music with friends. Because it’s not my job, I’m free to play with them and enjoy the moment.

What more do you want from life? JD. I’m not a collector and I don’t want to have more and more of everything. I’m happy with what I have; my career, family life, friends, and all the people I have around me and in my social life. It’s essential to wake up every morning and have a good program and with that I can be happy. I hope this life will continue and I’m very happy to spend all these years in this design job it’s one of the best lives I could dream of, like what I used to dream of when I was a kid.

A Thing of Beauty… …is indeed a joy forever. To say that Bassam Fattouh is passionate about beauty and makeup is an understatement; they are, in fact, his life. From his dream start in Beirut over a decade ago, his now bursting portfolio of celebrity clients is proof enough that a steely determination to follow one’s aspirations eventually pays off. With his very own cosmetics line, he talks exclusively to Ohlala! about what it takes to make it big in the beauty industry, his inspiration and his vision for the future.

“Don’t imitate, but create. We are here to make a difference.”

B

assam has been fond of makeup and beauty ever since he was little. When he was about six years old, Bassam remembers sketching makeup on models’ faces in magazines, and applying makeup on his mum’s face. It was a long time after that however, during the end of his high school life, when he realised that being involved in the arts, through makeup, was his ultimate passion. 54

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

What particular memory are you fond of from when you were starting out? Bassam Fattouh. The arts captivated me in all possible ways, so upon receiving my diploma in Paris, I moved back to Lebanon and turned my dreams into reality by opening my institute in Beirut in the summer of 1997. This was the critical turning point in my career, especially as I was the first makeup artist in the Middle East to advertise work on billboards.

Considering the traditional mentality that women are more likely to be in this line of business than men, did anyone around you object to your career choice? BF. No one objected but then neither did anyone encourage me. When I finally decided to go into the makeup industry, everything went smoothly.

You’ve worked with so many celebrities in the Middle East. Who’s your favourite face? BF. There’s no privilege in this industry. My work comes straight from my heart. I’ve worked on the world’s most glamourous faces but every woman that sits on my chair is the most beautiful woman, it’s her moment! I have no favourite face. However, Haifa Wehbe inspired me all along my career and I’ve gained most of my expertise while applying makeup on her beautiful features — she’s my muse.

Your makeup line offers quite a range products. What pushed you to develop your own? BF. I was fascinated by the world of arts: colours, shapes, feelings. Based on years and years of experience, I used my inspiration to develop everything I love about makeup in one line, a line that combines luxury with practical functionality and innovation. What inspires you to create a product? BF. Everything! Fashion inspires me, styles, fabrics, product names, nature, and shoes! It’s all about fantasy.

What would you say was the defining moment in your career? BF. Every step has been a defining moment to evaluate and to improve. I have always been confident about my talent and my choices. The use of daring colours in an artistic way was very critical to me.

What’s your advice to anyone wishing to pursue a career or business in this particular field? BF. Believe in your talent; follow your feelings, intuition and heart. Don’t imitate, but create. We are here to make a difference.

What makeup trend should people look out for this coming Spring Summer? BF. One of the biggest trends to watch out for in the Spring Summer season is all about a sheer look and flawless transparent skin. To achieve this, you can use bold colour lipsticks to make the skin stand out and give you that ‘natural look’. For the base foundation, pick one that gives a sheer and luminous coverage to even out the complexion. Lastly, apply a translucent and light powder for more radiance. So what’s next for Bassam Fattouh? BF. I’ll be developing the brand further and I’m planning on going global.

T

he 2013 model Lexus GS 350 is a wonderful mid-size luxury sports sedan. It is slightly wider and taller than the predecessor, with a modern and more assertive looking exterior design. Accompanying the exterior makeover the cabin is also revised, reflecting the best Lexus traditions with its handsome and finely crafted interior marked by soft leather with subtly pronounced stitching details, and rich wood and aluminium trim. The atmosphere is luxurious, quiet and comfortable. The seats are firm while at the same time cosseting, coming with the optional 18-way electronic adjustments for tailored comfort. The cockpit is ergonomically laid out with clearly separated display and operation zones. The multimedia system comes with a wide 12.3 inch Electro Multi Vision (EMV) display with a navigation system, parking assist camera and it also acts as a home theatre system. The infotainment system is very effortlessly controlled with Remote Touch, a mouse-like joystick located on the centre console. The menus are easy to navigate and the cursor “snaps” into place when you get near your choice on the screen. The sound-system is excellent, and can also be controlled from the rear seats. There’s a three-zone climate control system available with an optional and very innovative “nanoe” technology, which releases microscopic negatively charged “nanoe” particles in the cabin. Not only do these particles help purify the cabin air and deodorise the seats and upholstery, but — wait for this — best of all they display a healthy moisturising effect on your skin and hair. Now that’s sure to be a hit with all the lady drivers, beauty treatments from your car while you’re cruising around! The GS 350 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine delivering 312-horsepower. It moves very swiftly, accelerating from zero to 100-kilometres per hour in a very nice 6.3-seconds. The engine feels powerful and there are plenty of power reserves to accelerate, even at faster speeds. The handling is superbly smooth; the steering is very responsive and it is a real pleasure to drive. There are three different driving modes to choose from, Eco, Sport S and Sport S+. You can choose to drive on the automatic mode, or on the manual mode with the paddle shifts if you are in dynamic sport mood. Among many others the standard safety systems include traction and stability controls, ABS and brake assist systems, multitude of airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors. Security system and engine immobiliser (which is a theft deterrent system) are also standard features. If you are looking for a car that is fun but family friendly at the same time, the GS 350 is a good choice. The rear is spacious enough to accommodate children — and adults too — very comfortably,

and the rear and side window blinds create a relaxed atmosphere at the back. The boot accommodates pushchairs and family grocery shopping very well. It is great family car and at the same time due to the fine performance and lovely driving characteristics, it is also a fantastic car to have fun with. Well done Lexus!

A Cut Above‌ Arguably one of the most popular dining venues in Bahrain and boasting numerous accolades, The Meat Co is the place to be seen. Images by George Mathew

60

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

S

ituated in the heart of Adliya, the recently refurbished The Meat Co restaurant has established an impressive presence in the pedestrianised Block 338. Spread over three floors with choices of smoking, non-smoking and al fresco dining areas, it caters to those looking for quality and sophistication but with a friendly, welcoming ambiance. Greeted by name on arrival at the reception area, we were guided to our table through the chic décor. Using mainly natural materials and lots of texture, the dining area consists of plush leather seats and wooden tables with expansive windows. The ambient lighting gives the feel of candlelit dining and makes for a trendy but intimate setting to while away the hours with a romantic partner, family or friends. What’s special about The Meat Co is that having already raised the bar of dining standards, they now have a reputation to uphold, meaning that they go all out to live up to their tagline of being, “a cut above…” the rest. “We are continually looking at ways to go beyond our guests’ expectations,” the regional manager of The Meat Co, Hussein AlAraibi, tells us, “we want every person, not just to have a good dining experience, but an exceptional one.” The welcoming and knowledgeable staff make you feel at home as they walk you through the extensive menu; connoisseurs of meat and fruits of the vine prepare to be impressed. With a high level of attentiveness without being intrusive, you are enabled to enjoy the moment to your heart’s content. As an example of the restaurant’s unique touches, on birthday celebrations and other special occasions, the staff will gather around your table beating lively South African rhythms on the drums, singing and dancing. Truly animated and all smiles you can tell they relish the opportunity and feel the warmth of their welcome. Each dish on the menu offers very generous portion sizes (not that we found it hard to devour every last delicious morsel) and is simply displayed on sparkling white china, pleasing to the eye with an inviting appeal to the taste buds. Choose from Super Aged Meat, Hanging Beef Skewers, Connoisseur’s Choice, Specialties (such as barbeque ribs and lamb cutlets), Gourmet Burgers, Chicken, Seafood, Vegetarian and Pasta, Side Orders, and (breathe deeply) Desserts. After some deliberation (the choice is vast and mouthwateringly good) we settled on entrèes of Burrata Cheese, with tomato, fresh basil, crushed pepper and extra virgin oil, and Salt & Pepper Calamari, scored and lightly tossed in salt, pepper and spiced flour, then deepfried. Burrata Cheese is a favourite of ours, and this particular offering was exceptional. Extremely fresh, the crunchy salad with the smooth, meltin-your-mouth cheese was a perfect fusion of textures and flavours, and comes highly recommended. Salads are the ideal choice for those looking to watch their waistline, or as a fresh addition to heavier courses. But let’s face it, often salads can be simply boring, both in taste and looks. Self-professed salad aficionados, the Ohlala! team often prefer their own concoctions to

those available in restaurants. The Meat Co, however, we discovered is an exception to this rule, as they offer a rather appetising assortment. The Tomato & Strawberry Salad featuring slices of tomatoes, dressed in chili sugar and lemon, served with rocket leaves and balsamic strawberries, is an amazing explosion of flavours, sure to satisfy your taste buds. A ‘must-try’, the Goat’s Cheese Salad is a divine medley of caramelised onion tart topped with creamy goat’s cheese and crispy colour lettuce, served with bell pepper salsa and dressed with a tangy, aged balsamic and soya vinaigrette dressing. “Rooted and born in the rainbow nation of South Africa,” The Meat Co’s pièce de résistance is of course their meat, and you won’t be disappointed. The menu features a detailed description of each cut and preferred way of cooking to give you an in-depth look at what you’re ordering. All are served with your choice of starch and a wide range of sauces. “The quality of our beef is carefully managed from pasture to plate in our commitment that an exceptional product is served every time. Select grain-fed cuts are matured to perfection on our premises, then flame grilled with our internationally renowned unique house basting, au naturel or black pepper crusted.” Our server recommends the grain-fed beef, as it’s said to produce a richer taste, prepared “with a combination of light house basting and black pepper crusted.” From the Connoisseurs Choice, the Australian Wagyu Beef, 350 days grain fed Wagyu is rich in marbling and flavour, tender, juicy and naturally high in Omega 6 and 3 — delicious. “As Wagyu is heavily marbled it needs to be cooked for longer than a regular steak to allow the fat to turn to juice and the meat to soften,” Hussein advises us, “The best choice for a Wagyu fillet is medium-rare, and for Ribeye, medium-well.” From the Seafood section, we had the pleasure of tasting the Salmon Skewer — salmon fillet cubes (cooked to your liking) skewered with leeks, oranges and lemons, and grilled with Teriyaki sauce. A delightful dish, the fruit penetrates the succulent flesh of the salmon, imbuing it with delicate citrus flavours. To conclude our dining experience, we opted for The Meat Co Dessert Tasting Platter, which consists of the Chef’s selection of five mini desserts to tempt your palate — each dish a satisfying eruption of sweetness. Perhaps indulge in the Crème Brulee (a new personal favourite), the richly sticky Chocolate and Pistachio Fondant, or a Traditonal South African Malva Pudding, among many others. Every one is sure to satiate those with a sweet tooth, and is a perfect end to a lovely meal. Later, why not head up to The Meat Co’s rooftop bar and dining area for a digestif, or two… With a relaxed, vibey atmosphere, it’s a great place to spend your evening, any night of the week. 61

Remember A Wok to

Rewarding newcomers and long-time fans of Southeast Asian cuisine, the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and Spa’s Asian restaurant, Wok, brings a nice touch to a classic Vietnamese favourite — Pho’ Bo Beef Noodle Soup, as shared by Chef Phuc Nguyen. Images by George Mathew

62

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

PHO’BO BEEF NOODLE SOUP Vietnam is synonymous with Pho’ especially the one made with flat rice noodle cooked with chicken, or beef broths and herbs. In Vietnam, Pho’ is a dish famously prepared at homes and restaurants, and people have them for breakfast or late night meals all year-round. INGREDIENTS: 200 grams Beef tenderloin 200 grams Flat rice noodles 1 kg Ox Bone 25 grams Ginger 10 grams Cinnamon stick 15 grams Star anise 30 grams White onion, cut into rings 15 grams Dried shiitake mushroom 15 grams Shallot 100 grams Fish sauce 100 grams Sugar Spring onion, sliced Coriander, cut into chunks (1to 2cms)

“I love this particular recipe as it has a combination of natural spices which bring out full flavours — both aromatic and delicious, and above all, it’s easy to make.”

METHOD In a wok, blanch ox bone in boiling water, then remove after two minutes. Remove and clean with running water. For the broth, use an open flame on grill or gas stove. Place onions and ginger on cooking grate and let skin burn lightly. Do the same for the cinnamon stick, star anise, shallots and cloves, taking care not to blacken them completely. Remove or wash off blackened bits with warm water. Put the ox bone back in the pot (previously washed/cleaned), and add four litres of water, then the fish sauce, sugar, grilled ginger, grilled white onion cut rings, grilled cinnamon stick, grilled star anise, grilled shallot, grilled cloves (three grams) and shiitake mushrooms. Simmer for four hours until all the ox bone marrow has dissolved. Use strainer to remove bones and other ingredients and keep broth only. Next add the chicken powder, fish sauce and sugar to taste. Blanch flat rice noodles until soft, and add the blanched, thinly sliced beef tenderloin. Then drain to remove the water/liquids. Put the blanched noodles in a bowl together with the blanched beef tenderloin and add some mixed vegetables, coriander, white onion, and top with thinly sliced spring onions and julienned ginger and squeeze some lemon. Pour beef broth into the bowl and serve.

CHEF PHUC NGUYEN Chef Phuc Nguyen started his career in 2003 in the kitchens of a Chinese restaurant in Hanoi, before moving to an Italian establishment in the same city in 2005. He later joined the Mövenpick Hanoi as Demi Chef de Partie in 2006 before becoming the Chef de Partie at Sofitel Plaza in 2010, also in Hanoi. He later joined Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa in January 2011 up to April 2012 as Chef de Cuisine for Wok Asian restaurant. After a brief stint as Banquet Chef de Cuisine at Intercontinental Hanoi West Lake Vietnam, he rejoined the Sofitel Bahrain team at Wok where he is currently the Chef de Cuisine.

Wok South East Asian Restaurant Offering authentic South East Asian cuisine, Wok offers a spectacle of lights and flavours that can be enjoyed indoors or out. The open kitchen lets you view dishes being freshly prepared when you dine in the indoor seating area, or private dining rooms. There are seats on the terrace, which provide stunning views of the Arabian Gulf, for those who prefer dining al fresco. 63

Giovanni unveils your future for February… The month of Love

Happy Birthday Ms Aquarius February is naturally the month for romance and for your sign this could have special significance when a face from the past makes an unexpected appearance in your life around February 22. You’ll soon discover that your feelings haven’t changed for this particular individual and the temptations could prove too great to resist. If you’re looking for short term excitement to exhilarate a fairly barren period in your life then this experience may very well do the trick but don’t expect a serious commitment. What it might just do is help you to rediscover that confidence and desire to go out and find what it is you’re really looking for.

Aquarius — at a glance (January 20 – February 18)

Oprah Winfrey

Aquarians are creative and imaginative, although they are better at dreaming up ideas than putting them into practice. True visionaries and leaders, they think outside the box and are often seen as great thinkers but have an innate fear of boredom in their lives. Without excitement they can often struggle to develop, which can make them quite demanding in a relationship. They also make very good friends and value companionship, which makes them loyal. They’re free-spirited and because they value their independence, they are not always equipped to be the best lovers. If they feel trapped then they will seek out any excuse to break free. Aquarians can be stubborn in their opinions and often become impatient with those who don’t see their point of view and disagree with them. They are also very independent, often making them seem cold and detached and even rebellious on occasions.

Aries (March 20 – April 19)

You’ve had a lot on your mind of late when it comes to health concerns but fortunately recent findings will put your mind at rest, allowing you to focus instead on more important matters. February is going to be a particularly busy month for you and alongside work; a redecoration project could be on the cards. The start of 2013 will seem a lot more positive than the previous year and you should ride the momentum to the max!

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)

New love is just around the corner and this Valentine’s Day could see you celebrating in a surprising fashion. Everything that happens will be unexpected, making it even more exciting and when you finally take stock of your situation, you’ll be exactly where you’ve always wanted to be. The only thing to worry about is how to make more time to be with that special person!

LEO (July 23 – August 22) Love is the primary topic for you this month and events are moving even faster than you expected. You may even need to take a step back whilst you try and catch your breath. You are advised not to go looking for problems and instead, simply sit back and enjoy the ride. It’s still early days — so make the most of what you have discovered! It is set to be a very memorable Valentine’s Day in particular. Libra September 23 – October 22

There is a face in the crowd that has an interested eye on you this month and it could point towards the start of a new relationship and a major change in how your love life develops this year. The only problem could be that the person in question is currently living with someone else, and before you embark on anything you need to ensure that they part company from their present relationship, or things could very quickly become messy and complicated.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) Romantically things may seem uninspired at the moment and events both at home and work have contributed to this feeling. Free up some time with a partner to rejuvenate your relationship. It’s often the little things in life that make all the difference and you’d be surprised how easy this can be to fix. Book a weekend away and it won’t be long before you realise what you’ve been missing.

Pisces (February 19 – March 19)

This month may well see you finding new love by way of a completely untraditional route, and though some of you are looking to start a fresh relationship, this will nevertheless still come as a complete surprise to you. Don’t look at Valentine’s Day as a reason to get into a relationship. Rather just see it as a bonus if the opportunity comes your way.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You’ve emerged from a period of self-doubt and confusion into a much more stable and positive frame of mind for 2013. This year is set to open many new doors, and for some, a developing romance is going to prove to be the icing on a most successful February. You are going to be so preoccupied that you simply won’t know what to progress first, so put a plan together and make sure you stick with it. Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

February may not be the best month for your sign after whispers of a deceitful partner reach your ears from an unlikely female source and you suffer the painful truth of infidelity. Question the intentions of the person who reveals the matter to you and examine their long-term motives. All is clearly not as it should be and though you need to address the problems in your current relationship there is a wider jealousy issue that could damage your long term prospects in the future.

Virgo (August 23 — September 22) Your sign is not often seen as being one of the most romantic, which is unfair in many respects. You have a more logical approach to life but it doesn’t mean you’re unable to demonstrate your feelings. This month you‘ll find yourself entangled in a rather complicated love triangle and though the temptation to analyse and solve the situation logically will cross your mind, you’ll soon realise that on this occasion your heart and not your head offers the final solution. Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

As an emotional sign you are often mistaken for being closed and rather difficult to reach when in truth you just tend to keep things quite deep. Those of you with a romantic interest may need to shed that exterior wall and open up a little if you are to truly entice the person who has captured your heart. You don’t like taking risks, or moving outside of your comfort zone but on this occasion, it might be necessary if you really want to make this one work.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Emotionally you have enjoyed a good period with a partner and as a consequence you’re feeling more secure in a relationship than perhaps you ever have before. Improvements at work are bringing you a new sense of confidence and this will help you as you put a business project through its final planning phase before it is launched at the end of the month.

Lifestyle Lowdown Your monthly musings with Rozan Ahmed…

“I decided to make January my month of clarity, four weeks of unadulterated relax, replenish and cleanse in preparation for this glorious year ahead.”

reetings from Koh Samui, a cute little island in Thailand. Drenched in palm trees, beaches and wellness, over flowing with spas, detox retreats and replenishing souls, all of whom have made the choice to ‘vacay’ with the added bonus of physically and mentally boosting their bods. I decided to make January my month of clarity, four weeks of unadulterated relax, replenish and cleanse in preparation for this glorious year ahead. Now, the simpler term to all that's going on at the moment would be known as a ‘detox’, as is associated with drug addicts, alcoholics and some kind of rehabilitation set up. Wrong. A detox is to simply and essentially rid your body of toxins. Here's some bad news: most of us are filled with them, much thanks to processed foods, stressful lifestyles, smoking, not enough sleep, and just the general day to day drama we tend to put ourselves through. Here's some good news: there are multiple solutions available to ensure you "maintain the temple" ...such as the one I chose: partaking in a regimented program of basic starvation, which lasts about a week. It's painful, and tiresome (yet oddly idyllic), with wondrous — and immediat — benefits. Allow me to break things down: The food: Well, there is none. You're put on a diet of specially concocted juices and broths. Depending on how long your program is, this can continue for up to two weeks. It's supposed to get your body into "cleanse overdrive", eradicating the toxins and purifying internal organs. The exercise: Much like a boot camp, your day begins at 6am with a 90-minute hike, followed by 90 minutes of yoga, and then (!) 60 minutes of hardcore cardio. Doing all this is of course a mild hell, particularly for someone who despises the gym. Doing all this with no food in your system — whatsoever — is a new level of torture. The colonics: Google the definition if you're unsure. Then add to your discovery, "selfadministered". Indeed, not pretty. The highlight: A liver flush. This consists of drinking orange juice, ginger, garlic and OLIVE OIL, followed by Epsom salt water, and an overnight date with the toilet. The lessons: Multiple workshops on nutrition, preventative tips on maintaining, rather than treating, and [quite scary] reality checks on just how awful processed food really is. The perks:

Thai massages — daily. The results: Where do I begin... Lighter, healthier, stronger, more energetic, and completely revitalised... My hair's grown, so have my nails (very quickly), the whites of my eyes are more white, dark circles gone and skin cleared — with an added glow. Thanks to no edible anything for almost two weeks, it's now near impossible for me to eat heavier, fattier foods, even if I wanted to. Exercising has, shockingly, become enjoyable. Let us hope (and pray, and pray some more) that things remain this way. So... there you have it. And I cannot say it enough. You owe this to your body. So much so that I'm actually setting up a program for a number of us ladies to undergo in 2014. A "bougi detox" if you will. It's really not as gruesome as it sounds. Especially once I curate a little bit of lux into the mix. AND... since holidays are supposed to revive (not exhaust), this is, definitively, the way to break. If you're interested in coming along send your requests through to tellmemore@bougi.net. We're accepting ten ladies. Small and bespoke, as we do. In other Thai-related news, Koh Samui's spa count is heavenly. I actually think there's more of my self-spoil havens here than there are homes. The beaches aren't wonderful. Little dirty to be honest. In fact most of the island's a little dirty. There seems to be a problem with litter — and collecting it. Don't like this. The markets are quite thrilling, hustled and bustled with all sorts of Thai artefacts. Massages on most public beaches are available for approximately four US dollars (cheap insanity). Tourists from Russia are all over the place. And Israel. The airport looks like a pretty conservatory. Shopping is wonderful for natural beauty products, with coconut oil, papaya soap and ginseng being my personal faves. An inspiring excursion with monks left me tearfully touched. The level of peace in each of these humbly powerful human beings was almost overwhelming. Made a donation toward their building of a temple. Then, I signed a brick. Thank you Thailand. All set. Ready and raring. 2013... Let us refreshingly begin. Visit: www.rozanahmed.com Like: www.facebook.com/bougi tweet: @IamRozan
