Editor’s Letter

And in the blink of an eye 2022 is ending. After the pandemic, we were eager for a 'normal' year, and I guess 2022 was a pretty good one, with the world returning to normality. So we must celebrate! We bring an array of party-ready looks, jewellery, beauty and Christmas and New Year's dining offers to end the year in grand style.

We were lucky to meet incredible people for exclusive interviews. We had the chance to chat with Gianvito Rossi and talk about his namesake brand. He is the son of the iconic shoe master, Sergio Rossi, and is writing his own history in the luxury footwear industry. In the jewellery field, the contemporary designer Valérie Messika shared with us how she rose to stardom, her passion for what she does and her relationship with the fashion world.

We also enjoyed not one but two spa reviews. We headed to the newly opened GOCO Spa at Steigenberger Hotel Doha for their Ceremonial Hammam and we were treated to a cleansing salt scrub and a signature massage at eforea Spa at Hilton Doha. These are fantastic therapies to consider if you want to start the New Year with glowing skin.

Inspired by the shimmering accents that the holiday season brings, we guide you on adding golden elements to your home décor. And if you plan to go away this winter, we explore the uniqueness that Japan has to offer.

To satiate our appetite, we dined at Jamavar Doha at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel to try their Celebration Menu – composed of set courses that will please carnivores and vegetarians alike. In our last test drive of the year, we got behind the wheel of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost. We can only say that we close the year with a golden key!

I am thankful for having you with us and I hope to keep writing inspiring and interesting stories for you in 2023.

Happy New Year!

FARFETCH HOLIDAY CAMPAIGN

Rocking the weird-but-cool vibe, Christian Louboutin enters the contest with these eye-catching sandals. If the idea is to attract attention, why not step into the New Year with this gorgeous footwear?

Fashion Picks AUDACITY’S THE WORD!

The end of 2022 is just around the corner and we celebrate with daring fashion pieces. We are in the mood for gold, bold and daring items, just because we can!

The best way to make a plain pair of trousers stand out is to team them up with a sophisticated blouse. This Celine number brings a striking golden pattern for ladies who like to catch everyone’s attention, for the right reason.

Fluffy pieces are in our lineup this month and Michael Kors Collection went extra big with a luxurious faux-fur coat. The yellow hue allows you to shine as bright as the sun.

This is the season for fun jumpers and cardigans. Weekend Max Mara has a collection of cosy options with a selection of stylish patterns that will keep you away from Christmas motifs. You could also put your knitting skills to good use.

Speaking of standing out in the crowd, this Moschino bag will certainly do the trick. Sometimes a funky accessory is all you need to make your look more amusing.

WHAT TO WEAR WITH:

ANIMAL PRINT

5

Unleash the party animal in you with motifs inspired by wild creatures’ skin patterns, from leopard to zebra to snakeskin. Celine’s shimmering snakeskin skirt is a good start to compose a killer look!

1. Michael Kors Collection went for a full-on animal look. The pattern on the trench coat and boots is the same to create a striking effect.

2. Pair your eye-catching skirt with a black lingerie tank top. The neckline detail adds an exciting element to the simple cut of this piece. Stella McCartney has a selection of cute little tops.

3. Gold accessories are easy to team with busy patterns. This L’AFSHAR yellow metal clutch works well with snakeskin and leopard patterns, while motifs like zebra look best with silver tones.

4. To create sophisticated looks, choose satin blouses in solid colours. This one from Max Mara will help elevate your look. Green is also a great colour to pair with your animal-print piece.

5. Knee-high boots are a hot trend this season and are the perfect winter footwear to coordinate with miniskirts. These Gianvito Rossi tan boots are a classic and luxurious pick.

6. Mixing and matching patterns is not an easy thing to do, but Roberto Cavalli, a brand that has mastered the art of animal print, does it without a second thought. This season, the label showed us that red tartan and leopard can actually look stunning together!

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED:

PANGEA

Millions of years ago, the world was a single continent. This supercontinent called Pangea inspired Turkish Airlines to create a new vision of a world where continents, people and emotions reconnect.

Even though millions of years have passed since the Pangea era, when the world was a united whole, to today’s world, where the continents have separated and changed, and in spite of all the stories the world has heard and told, the essence of mankind is still the same: Our need to come together, unite and understand one another in spite of the differences that separate us and over which we have no control.

Turkish Airlines connects more countries than any other airline through its hub in Istanbul, the meeting point of continents, bringing together those separated by long distances with its unrivaled flight network. This unifying force connects people, cultures and countries, holding out the promise of a new Pangea experience for the modern world.

Italian Flair

The FIFA World Cup 2022 has attracted a lot of attention to Qatar and many boutiques have opened in the country in the past months. One of the newest is FENDI in the North Node Central Concourse, the latest expansion of the Hamad International Airport. Designed by the brand’s internal architecture department, it embraces the FENDI universe, drawing inspiration from timeless Roman architectural elements. The 220sq/m store features a wide selection of women’s and men’s collections. A futuristic LED backdrop installation is there temporarily and will be replaced by a sculptural fountain composed of alternating silver metal columns and 7,500 crafted glass disks, internally illuminated to emulate the fluidity of water flowing. The sculpture will provide a special place for the Qatar-exclusive items that will be exhibited around the fountain. From March 2023, the second floor will feature the first permanent FENDI Cafe globally. Currently, the FENDI Cafe can be found a few steps from the boutique as a temporary installation.

Inseparable Duo

Well-known for their footwear, Malone Souliers are launching a handbag collection for the first time. The Holiday Bags Collection marks their venture in the field of carriers. A natural progression for the brand as shoes and bags are made for each other. The designs translate the brand’s love for traditional crafting and innovative creations into a new medium; they echo the shoes’ inspirations but always with the product purpose in mind. Among the line, the Audrey design brings a sophisticated square silhouette with a flap closure for metropolitan appeal. In a structureless shape, Ingrid is a bucket bag with a statement-making metallic handle. “This collection was an opportunity to apply our meticulous manufacturing techniques and a keenly refined aesthetic to a new area, to push ourselves into uncharted territory, and to approach the task with excitement and optimism," said Mary Alice Malone, Malone Souliers Founder and Creative Director.

Focus An Elegant SPORTS ICON

Louis Vuitton designed a sophisticated travel case for the FIFA World Cup Trophy for the fourth time in a row. An exclusive leather goods capsule collection was also unveiled.

Specially crafted by highly skilled artisans at Louis Vuitton’s Asnières workshop, the iconic FIFA World Cup Trophy Travel Case is covered in a beautiful, lightweight yet hardwearing, laser-engraved monogrammed titanium, a material that has been used in the maison’s menswear collection. It is protected at each of the eight corners with natural cowhide leather and the trunk is fitted with a lock and six clasps made from ruthenium, a strong dark-grey metal. Since the maison’s foundation in 1854, it has crafted many custom-made travel objects, from a foldout trunk-bed for 19th-century explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza to a portable tea-service trunk for the Maharajah of Baroda. The meticulously designed travel case is an addition to this luxurious repertoire and will protect and transport the 6.175kg and 18-carat gold and malachite FIFA World Cup Trophy. Louis Vuitton have provided the travel trunk for the legendary trophy since 2010. The relationship between the luxury label and the FIFA World Cup grew with the unveiling of a leather goods collection launched for the 2018 edition of the sporting tournament. Once again, Louis Vuitton has launched an exclusive capsule collection specially designed for this year’s 22nd edition of the event. Five collectable pieces in black Taurillon leather channel the game’s energy by revisiting one of the maison’s most emblematic signatures, the Damier motif, embossed to recall the movement of the net as a goal is scored.

Timeless icons such as the Keepall 50 and City Keepall bags, as well as the Discovery backpack return. They offer ample central compartments, practical inner pockets that keep essentials on hand and adjustable straps accented with black metallic hardware; on Keepall styles, the shoulder straps are removable. The Keepall 50 also features five protective bottom studs shaped like football cleats. Small leather goods include a Dopp kit (small toiletry bag) and a handy pocket organiser.

ELEVATED SHOEMAKING

Gianvito Rossi visited Qatar to open his namesake store, and OHLALA had the pleasure of talking to the man behind this awe-inspiring Italian brand. A label that brings legacy and excellence to the shoe world.

34 www.ohlalamag.net OHLALA
GIANVITO ROSSI

OHLALA – Your relationship with the shoemaking industry is a heritage from your late father, Sergio Rossi. Did you always know that you would work in this field? Was it imprinted in your DNA or something you embraced later in life?

Gianvito Rossi I grew up seeing my father creating shoes, and I do consider myself very lucky because I had the chance to learn all about shoes from him. He had extreme attention to design and was always looking to reach the perfect silhouette. I believe this is the greatest lesson I learned from him. The ability to be constantly dedicated ensures the quest for perfection that is now obviously imprinted into my DNA.

OHLALA – You created your own brand in 2006. What was the main motivation to start your label?

Gianvito After my father sold his company, I realised I couldn’t really stay away from the shoe world. The launch of Gianvito Rossi Milano was definitely a changing moment in my career and life. This meant exposing myself and my designs without knowing how the public would react. It was important to continue the family tradition while allowing me to express my style and creativity. I could not think of anything else, it was, and it is still today, a pure and genuine passion.

OHLALA – What have you conquered in your career until now that you are most proud of?

Gianvito – I have to say the loyalty and passion of our clients. When I see them appreciating the collections, I couldn’t be happier.

OHLALA – What are the main characteristics of Gianvito Rossi shoes? Is there a principle that you always follow when designing a new collection?

Gianvito I think the key elements of Gianvito Rossi shoes are the comprehensive research of raw materials as well as the continuous and meticulous study of shapes and proportions. These are the essential characteristics of every creation.

OHLALA – Can you tell us more about the work you are developing with the University of Bologna? How important is it for you to implement sustainability in your brand?

Gianvito The work with the University of Bologna is an important project to me. It allowed us to understand our environmental impact through hard data and use this knowledge to mitigate our internal carbon footprint. As a company, we took our first step towards sustainability a few years ago, lowering our CO2 impact while applying the circular economy concept. We are also reducing and upcycling our waste in a constantly improving programme.

OHLALA – Qatar is a style-forward country with its fashion scene standing out in the region. How important is it for you to have a Gianvito Rossi boutique here?

Gianvito I think Qatar is an amazing country and, specifically, in the past years, the luxury industry scene has grown quite a lot. I’m very happy to be present in Qatar with our rollout of stores opening in the region.

OHLALA – Why do you think that Qatari women and men will fall in love with your creations?

Gianvito I think both Qatari men and women appreciate how we treat proportions, making the design even more geometric with cleaner lines. And I believe that both know how to recognise high quality.

OHLALA – What message do you want to spread with your brand?

Gianvito My objective is to celebrate women’s silhouettes, making them feel beautiful.

FASHION TREASURES

Valérie Messika, the name behind Maison Messika jewellery, landed in Qatar to open the brand’s store at Place Vendôme Mall. OHLALA had the opportunity to chat with her about her career and the brand’s core values.

36 www.ohlalamag.net
VALÉRIE MESSIKA

OHLALA - Maison Messika is a worldfamous brand with a celebrity clientele. Why do you think your jewellery is so in demand?

Valérie Messika - I think we offer a new proposition in diamond jewellery bringing something new to the industry. It’s cool, feminine and stylish. I think we really encapsulate the mood of the fashion world in our collections. That’s why we took Messika’s High Jewellery to Paris Fashion Week. I’ve loved fashion since I was young and I wanted to recreate the mood and the energy of fashion in the diamond world. My jewellery isn’t just given as gifts, my clients come into the store to buy for themselves.

OHLALA - It’s almost a decade since Maison Messika opened their first flagship store on the Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. Now Messika is debuting at the Place Vendôme Mall in Qatar. What similarities are there between this store and your first? And what’s new?

Valérie - In the last 10 years, Messika has changed in many ways. But some things remain the same. Clients are always looking for new and innovative products. That’s why I decided to open my first store in a fashion street like the Rue Saint-Honoré and not in a jewellery street. And that is why we are here today in a fashion mall. Our new store in the Place Vendôme Mall is amazing. It’s very grand, with incredibly high ceilings, but the store is very open too. That’s important to me. I want people to be able to come inside easily and to feel welcome.

OHLALA - What have been the highlights of your career so far?

Valérie - My first career highlight was when Beyoncé wore my jewellery in 2013. I’m obsessed with music and she’s an icon in the field. I was very blessed by her. She fell in love with the brand and has worn it so many times. She is strong and powerful and she gives the brand the mood of something very edgy, very cool. Another highlight was when I opened my first store in Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. Messika is also about creating special lines with incredible models. In 2017, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of my iconic collection, the Move Collection, and I co-created a limitededition jewellery line with Gigi Hadid. In 2020, I worked with Kate Moss, one of my muses, and we created a vast and unique collection. I

guess I also need to highlight the importance of the new generation to our brand, they love our pieces. I would like to thank them for helping with the success of our maison.

OHLALA - Why do you feel that Maison Messika’s collaboration with Kate Moss worked so well?

Valérie - Because in life, when things are true, people feel it. Our collaboration is not a marketing strategy. It was very spontaneous. Kate Moss was the first face of the brand and one day we were having tea and she told me that she was a big collector of jewellery. She invited me to London and offered to open her jewellery box for me to show me her collection. I said I would love that and asked what she thought of co-creating something together. And she said yes! For me, it was like a dream come true because I see all the pieces of jewellery we created together as fashion creations. This is what I have in my DNA and why I started the brand. And I definitely think these pieces are cool, edgy, feminine and, at the same time, very modern.

- The Skinny Diamond Collection was a turning point for Maison Messika. What do you see as your next big thing?

I want to adapt myself, always. I want to bring something new to the market and I’ve looked for inspiration from cultures around the world. So now I’m obsessed with different ways of wearing jewellery, such as nose piercings and lips. It’s so cool and so sexy. I want to keep going and be a game-changer in the industry to make diamonds even cooler, young and fresh.

- Finally, if you had to choose three words to describe Maison Messika’s vision, what would they be?

Game-changer, like a disrupting diamond. This means bringing novelty and a fresh attitude. Feminine – women are a big source of inspiration for me. I am surrounded by women, such as my mother and my two girls. I think there is something about empowering women in the brand. And lastly – diamonds, of course.

FEMININE, MAJESTIC AND MYSTICAL

The second opus of Messika Paris’ Beyond The Light collection channels radiance and power. The creations were presented in a runway show during Paris Fashion Week.

38 www.ohlalamag.net
JEWELLERY Edit

Characteristic of Messika Paris’ Beyond The Light collection, the new pieces continue to explore the fascinating, mysterious world of ancient Egypt. In these pieces, the power of architectural lines is combined with the purity of geometric shapes enriching Messika’s offerings. Particularly when it comes to the work on coloured gemstones such as turquoise, malachite, onyx and aventurine. This month, we highlight two lines in this vast collection.

REGAL ADORNMENTS

Messika’s iconic Move Uno pattern is depicted through the Imperial Move ensemble – necklace, bracelet and finger rings – in the colours of the Nile river. Onyx, aventurine, turquoise and malachite are combined with gold and diamonds. Ancient Egypt emphasised the use of colours and what they represented. Egyptians were masters of mixing colours, highlighting ancient art’s symbolism and spiritual inspiration. One of the sets features a necklace, ring and earrings with the colours of the stones creating beautiful pairings and bold combinations. Malachite and yellow gold, onyx and white gold, aventurine glass and rose gold, turquoise and yellow gold, and an all-gold set.

MAGICAL MESH

The Kandake line brings a graphic motif expressing the brand’s connection to the fashion world. The mesh used throughout this suite allows flexibility and movement of the pieces and the intricate designs are shown in necklaces, bracelets and mono hoops. These jewels celebrate the power of women and evoke the images of queens from the ancient kingdom of Kush in present-day Sudan. They were powerful warrior women who stood up to the armies of the Roman emperor Augustus. Messika’s pieces adorn all parts of the body. The bold and ultracontemporary items showcase Valérie Messika’s unique talent. The setting of all stones and flexible links highlights the quality of the French brand that brings innovation to the high-jewellery world.

Boucheron has embodied excellence in high jewellery and watchmaking for generations. The maison’s style, free and audacious, continues to create the classics of tomorrow. This festive season, the luxury jeweller and horologist captures the holiday magic with stunning end-of-year visuals. It’s a joyful invitation to experience this time of year through the eyes of a child. It leads you to an imaginary world where the most enchanting surprises are hidden in the most unlikely places. The Boucheron Wonderland campaign features ambassadresses: Alexa Chung, Mila Al Zahrani, Hannah Quinlivan, Youn-Jung Go and Rola. They were adorned with jewels from various collections to compose stunning looks.

BANDED QUEEN

Alexa Chung shows off jewels from the Quatre Classique collection. These iconic jewels elevate your style, whether you opt for clip earrings, hoop earrings or rings – a graphic signature and contemporary character in the world of Boucheron. They come in various combinations of yellow, pink and white gold and brown PVD.

FREE-SPIRITED FAIRY

Born at the maison’s workshop in 1968, the Serpent Bohème collection embodies the label’s free spirit and unique craftsmanship. Mila Al Zahrani is embellished with Bohème Diamond ornaments in the form of earrings, a choker and rings. She also wore a Serpent Bohème watch, set with mesmerising mother-of-pearl.

LAID-BACK STYLE

Hannah Quinlivan was styled with items from the Quatre Black Edition. The black colour lends the capsule an ultra-elegant, understated touch. Fashioned with white gold and diamonds and exhibiting simple yet far from simplistic craftsmanship, Quatre Black summons confidence.

WHITE AND PURE

White symbolises a range of emotions; purity, peace and festivity. Youn-Jung embraced precious pieces from the Quatre White Edition. Lending a fresh touch to the Quatre collection, these jewels sculpted in white ceramic enhance the sparkle from the diamonds and three colours of gold.

GREEN-EYED GODDESS

Rola wore a bracelet, a pendant and two rings from the Serpent Bohème Malachite collection. The triple motif ring has a malachite, paved with diamonds, facing two studded diamond motifs. The intense green elevated by the silky lustre of malachite, set against glorious gold, channels a fierce royal energy.

ADORN YOURSELF WITH HAPPINESS

The House of Chopard offers luxurious timepieces and jewellery that truly embody the festive spirit.

42 www.ohlalamag.net JEWELLERY Edit

Celebrate the holiday season with Chopard’s Happy collections. You can opt for the house’s signature heart-shaped pendant with dancing diamonds or have your eyes drawn to the Planet bracelets, channelling the energy of the cosmos. But if you want to keep track of time, the elegant Happy Sport watches combine Chopard’s design aesthetic and horological prowess.

MY HEART BEATS FOR YOU

This new Happy Diamonds Joaillerie piece abandons the traditional bezel setting for a very precious crown alternative, embracing a more generous gem size. Diamonds sculpt a majestic heart pendant in ethical 18-carat white gold and the precious stones are selected with care by limiting the setting prongs’ visibility and guaranteeing maximum light exposure. The heart further encases seven dancing diamonds – the ultimate Chopard signature, symbolising the freedom of women who are continuously capable of reinventing their trajectory. The pendant is held around the neck by a double chain, also in ethical 18-carat white gold and enhanced with diamonds. Chopard is one of the few jewellers to craft its own chains based on expertise perpetuated over generations within its manufacture.

LITTLE CONSTELLATIONS

These Happy Diamonds Planet pieces reinterpret Chopard’s lucky dancing diamonds with a new family of bracelets in ethical gold adorned with natural stones. The tips of these bangles stage a pas de deux between a dancing diamond and a colourful bead – green agate, blue lapis lazuli, black onyx, pink rhodochrosite or diamonds – whose spherical shape inspires the name of the collection. The palette of colours offers infinite combinations in which you can wear the jewels. Chopard have been using 100% ethical gold to produce all their jewellery and watches since 2018.

MR BLUE SKY

Three new Happy Sport watches featuring a modern look suggest a more relaxed way of wearing diamonds, suitable for everyday life. The first model, in steel with a 30mm diameter, is adorned with a dial whose sky-blue hue serves as a backdrop to the whirl of three dancing diamonds. The two other timepieces, with their larger 36mm diameters, combine stainless steel with details in ethical 18-carat rose gold, while their dials and leather straps are attired in different shades of blue. One has five twirling diamonds and the other seven, in addition to a textured mother-of-pearl dial with a blue gradient.

An Enduring TRAIL

The new fragrance by Prada showcases a timeless white flower bouquet reinvented into an avant-garde signature. Encapsulated in an iconic triangular bottle inspired by the original Prada logo, it is characterised by dominating notes of neroli and jasmine and the olfactory signature of Ambrofix (amber accord) and Serenolide (white musk accord). The perfume creates an intimate and enduring trail led by a vibrant warmth. Prada’s innovative technology extracts the scent of the neroli bud before it opens. The fragrance offers a new take on freshness, capturing this brief dimension of the flower. Ambrofix, typically used in masculine scents, delivers a powerful, stable and authentic woody note, while Serenolide lends an elegant muskiness.

In a shift from traditional perfume bottle architecture, the flacon is minimal and luxurious, designed to rest on its side. The luminous, radical structure of the bottle encapsulates the Prada codes of sophistication and avant-garde with a touch of eccentricity. The signature triangle shape is contrasted by rounded angles, while the accents of the intense black logo are presented on a delicate coral pink hue. The eau de parfum is available in 30ml, 50ml, 90ml and 100ml bottles.

A signature feminine fragrance, Paradoxe explores the symbiosis of contradiction deep within the brand: craftsmanship and technology, tradition and modernity, challenge and refinement, rigour and fantasy. It’s a celebration of multi-dimensional selfexploration and expression in perpetual evolution: a woman who is never the same, yet always uncompromisingly herself.

Devoted to Beauty

Throughout this period, Shiseido has continued its commitment to using cutting-edge technology and science to bring forth products focused on efficacy and safety, all while still staying rooted in and inspired by nature.

As part of this milestone occasion, the brand has revealed three unique products, each of which symbolises Shiseido’s heritage, innovation and commitment to the future.

The lineup includes the 150th Anniversary Edition of Eudermine Revitalizing Essence, which will be available for a limited time. Rooted in Japanese beauty rituals, this product was a favourite among geishas who used it to protect their skin under heavy make-up. This bio-hyaluronic-acidinfused softening lotion, considered a staple of any J-Beauty skincare routine (which incorporates softening, strengthening, moisturising and protecting), drenches skin in moisture and helps with water retention. It comes in distinctive packaging, a glass bottle reproduction of the first iteration of Eudermine, which was launched in 1897.

Also, part of the range is the limited edition Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate Serum which features Shiseido’s The Lifeblood technology that aims to strengthen the skin’s blood vessels and blood flow and inner defences for a healthier and more vibrant complexion. This product helps visibly reduce signs of ageing, amplifies hydration and boosts radiance.

Finally, the limited edition Ultimune Power Shot is the concentrated version of Shiseido’s anti-ageing serum. This product is surprisingly lightweight, fast absorbing, yet intensely potent and is powered by Shiseido’s ImuGeneration150 technology, which comes infused with Ultimune’s ingredients in a 15x concentration. The design for the 150th Anniversary Edition’s packaging has been inspired by Kumadori, a make-up style of kabuki (a form of traditional Japanese theatre), and incorporates an arabesque pattern that has been used by Shiseido since 1920.

We Like To PARTY

Sparkle and shine with our compilation of the most exciting hair and make-up trends this festive season. Melissa Nazareth highlights the styles to embrace in the last days of the year.

50 www.ohlalamag.net

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The festive spirit calls for out-there trends: glittery make-up, voluminous hair, bold colours and fancy accessories. If that doesn’t sound like you, don’t worry. There is a wide range of AW 2022/2023 trends that are subtle and yet make a statement, from au naturel looks to muted, frosted highlights.

SUPPLE SKIN

Not everyone is blessed with alabaster skin. The trick, however, is to use the right products. Glowy, natural-looking skin is a major trend this season. You can add some shine in keeping with the festive vibe and balance out a vibrant colour palette.

How to get the look?

Invest in dewy highlighters and facial oils that lend your skin a moisturised look. Low-coverage foundations and tinted moisturises are your friends. Finish with cheek and lip tint for a nourishing effect.

ALL EYES ON YOU

Drastic eyeliners were the rage on the fashion runways. Throw conventional wings out the window and say hello to dramatic swishes and flicks right up to your crease or even on the lower lid. Want to level up, try coloured liners.

How to get the look?

Invest in felt-tip liners, which have a glistening finish, unlike eye pencils. Going for a pop of colour? Blue hues work better with cooler skin tones, while warmer complexions should opt for green shades. Stacking eye shadow on your lash line is another option.

EMPORIO ARMANI

LASH OUT

Beautiful, long lashes complete your eye make-up. They open up your peepers, making them look bigger and brighter. If you don’t have naturally fuller lashes, there are many ways to create the illusion of volume.

How to get the look?

A lash curler is a long-term investment. Heating your curler with your dryer – not too much – will help you style them better. Falsies are also a great option. For those who like to dare, go a step ahead with glittery, decorative falsies and coloured mascara.

RED TINT

The classic red lip remains the holy grail of festive make-up, and rightly so. It’s versatile and works perfectly well with full-coverage and minimalistic looks.

How to get the look?

Gone are the days when siren red was the only option. Redefine the red lip by choosing a shade that suits your skin tone, such as maroon, berry-hued reds, burgundy and so on. Have fun with an ombre effect; use a lip liner to define the shape, shade the outer lip with a darker red and go lighter in the centre.

BEAUTIFY YOUR TRESSES

Braids, high ponytails, buns and beach waves are dominating this season. Hairstylist Tané Murray shares tips on how to make these trends more festive.

How to get the look?

“Transform your high ponytail by adding a black ribbon to cover the hair band. Use an iron to curl the ends in or, for a more adventurous look, flick them out. You could finish with a shine spray, ” says Tané.

When it comes to braiding, she adds: “Do a braid of your choice and add a small piece of silver hair jewellery down the centre of the braid on every section. This will give the effect of enhanced length.”

A favourite style during this time of the year is the up-do and here is her tip: “Have some fun with a messy or sleek bun by adding small sprinkles of hair glitter on the back at the base of your hair right before the bun starts. Don’t be shy to add some hair tinsel as well.”

Regarding colouring trends for the festive season, Tané says: “Toasted caramel, rich brunettes, buttery blonde, creamy copper and warm tones are hot this season.” She adds that frosting is the latest trend. It is different from traditional highlights, which are bolder and more noticeable. In the frosting technique, the colour of the highlight is not much lighter than the base shade.” We think the word frosting sounds quite festive too!

The stylist believes that less is more when it comes to hair accessories. “Add one accessory as a statement piece in festive season colours: green and red are already quite bold,” she says. She also recommends embellished headbands and gold and silver accessories.

A TEMPLE OF WELLNESS

Experience a moment of heaven on earth at the Steigenberger Hotel Doha’s GOCO Spa. Amica Sicilia is treated like a goddess at this brand-new sanctuary in the city.

54 www.ohlalamag.net

In the heart of Old Doha’s buzzing business district lies a slice of paradise. Outside, the Steigenberger Hotel Doha is sleek black glass, like a cruise ship in stealth mode. But step inside and it’s all light and air, the gilded walls of the chic entrance hall soaring up past minimalistic modern chandeliers while slatted screens mask shaded corners for quieter moments. And now this flagship of European hospitality holds a new allure: the brand new GOCO Spa. I know I’m nearing the right place by the sound of running water. Delicate fountains flank the entrance, with cool streams running down walls of tiny pearl tiles past tumbling orchids. Inside, the spa’s 1,700 square metres offer their hidden treasures like a luxurious labyrinth of wellness, a temple dedicated to health, beauty and absolute bliss. GOCO Spa’s team of expert therapists blend a deep expertise in ancient Middle Eastern bathing traditions with cutting-edge innovation, ancient healing traditions and holistic techniques to provide the ultimate antidotes to modern lifestyle. Their offerings include dedicated male and female sections with private

treatment rooms, each with its own plunge pool, secret rooftop gardens, pools, hydrotherapy tubs and a pale-wood-panelled sauna in the Scandinavian style. There is a ladies’ outdoor terrace with swimming pool that is an ideal venue for private events and full nail and beauty services to get you ready to face the world again. But I’m here for their unmissable signature luxury treatment, the GOCO Spa Ceremonial Hammam by Maison d’Asa, a two-hour trip to heaven and back again. I’m greeted by Zanele, my therapist and guide on that journey, who welcomes me into the cool marble lobby with a glass of jasmine tea, infused with ginger and fresh lemon. As I cleanse my hands with a hot towel, she asks me about my particular needs, including how my skin and hair are doing and where in my body I hold tension (back and shoulders, I’m all too guilty, like so many of us, of spending too many hours poring over screens). Then she leads me through to the beautiful, luminous changing rooms where I ditch my city workwear for a soft white robe and slippers, ready to have my life changed.

55 www.ohlalamag.net SPA

Stepping into the Hammam, we enter a world of white, elegant pristine marble wreathed in clouds of fragrant steam. My bed in the private bathing room is a block of pure white marble covered in soft towels. Lying down, breathing deeply, I feel warm to my core, cocooned in mist. My whole mood, mind and body start to change gear: this is me-time now. This ritual takes the ancient Hammam experience and elevates it to a higher plane. Zanele begins with Moroccan black soap, a traditional Castile method made from olive oil and high in health-giving vitamin E. Using an authentic kessa fabric glove, she works this natural soft cleanser into my whole body, exfoliating, decongesting and purifying the skin. The next step is another natural scrub, this time with sweet orange oil. It’s a fragrance that always instantly transports me to summer evenings by the sea, golden hour in a bottle, repairing my mind as firm, cleansing strokes rejuvenate my skin.

After rinsing away the oils with hot water, Zanele applies a deeply nourishing warm rhassoul masque infused with rosewater all over my body. Rhassoul is a natural clay from high in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Its mineral-rich formula has been used by women for over a millennium

to detoxify and ensure radiant skin. While the clay works its magic, Zanele washes my hair, her gentle touch across my scalp banishing the stresses and strains of the week far away. Purified body and soul, it’s time for act two. Zanele swathes me in thick fluffy towels and leads me from the bright, steamy warmth of the Hammam into the cool darkness of the massage room. I slip between smooth highthread-count sheets and relax on my front, as calming music filters down around me. The air is scented with bergamot and lavender, rising from the warming oils selected especially for a truly bespoke massage. Then bit by bit over the next hour, Zanele’s expert hands chase all trace of tension from my body. To get to the deepest layer of tension in my back, she gently bends my arm at the elbow, supporting it on a soft cushion and even raising each leg, in turn, to ensure every group of muscles gets full attention. When it’s time to turn over, she shades my eyes with a cooling eye mask while hot towels warm the soles of my feet. The rest of the world melts away and all that exists is the dance of pressure instructing my muscles to relax. I feel like I’m existing on a higher plane. Afterwards, I find a shaded corner of the secret rooftop garden. Reclining in a white wicker armchair, I sip green tea and nibble on sweet dates. The world has slowed down. From up here, the city seems quiet. I take my time to come back down to earth after my journey into paradise.

A METAMORPHOSIS IN WEST BAY

Just like a caterpillar becomes a beautiful butterfly, Kay Woodward rises glowing from her visit to eforea Spa at Hilton Doha.

It doesn’t matter how many times I see the Hilton Doha, I never fail to be impressed. This morning, I take a moment to tip back my head and appreciate the tall, slender hotel that’s been a constant in the ever-changing Doha skyline for 16 years. Perched at the edge of the West Bay diplomatic area, with an enviable view of the Arabian Gulf, Hilton Doha has a private beach, two outdoor pools and an eforea Spa. Incredibly, the spa is somewhere I’ve never been. But that’s something I’m about to put right, at last. I admire the hotel’s impressive lobby before descending the grand stairs. At the foot of the hotel, guests can step outside to enjoy the sandy beach and pool area. Beyond, the azure sea sparkles. I swerve left into eforea Spa, which nestles cosily behind the gym. It’s cool and calm, with butterfly motifs fluttering all around. I’m greeted by Maja, the Spa and Resort Manager. As I sip cool water infused with lemon and mint, she tells me that the concept behind eforea centres around the life cycle of a butterfly. Clients may enter the spa feeling as slow and lethargic as a caterpillar, but they leave as lively and sprightly as a butterfly. ‘Emerge brighter’, says the brochure. Yes, please. eforea Spa uses some of the best skincare products out there: ELEMIS and Charme d’Orient. And the first step of my butterfly transformation is the ELEMIS Intensely Cleansing Salt Scrub. The choices are lime and ginger or frangipani –because these creamy-yellow beauties are my favourite flowers in Qatar – I opt for the latter.

59 www.ohlalamag.net
SPA Spotlight

My therapist today is the wonderful Ernie and it doesn’t take long to work out why most of eforea Spa’s clientele is made up of residents who return time after time to be rejuvenated and refreshed. Ernie is, quite simply, amazing. She’s from Bali and – like all of eforea’s therapists – has been traditionally trained. It shows. I’ve never experienced a salt scrub before and if I wasn’t awake before, I certainly am afterwards. The firm assured pressure of the salt scrub combines extreme zinginess with a soothing, calming aroma, banishing dry skin. Goodbye rough; hello smooth. Then it’s time to relax. The eforea Signature Massage is simply sublime. When I comment that my shoulders are a little stiff, Ernie delves deep. Knots vanish and tension dissolves little by little until I feel nothing short of fabulous. If you are in dire need of destressing, choose the Deep Tissue Massage. You won’t regret it.

60 www.ohlalamag.net

If you are short of time, it’s worth considering eforea Spa’s signature treatments, an addition to their already comprehensive menu, designed to be mixed and matched depending on each client’s needs. The mini treatments focus on key areas of the body – head and face; shoulders, neck and scalp; or feet. But what’s special is that all of them – each lasting 25 minutes –are designed to be performed on someone facing upwards. So if you’re feeling particularly exhausted, just relax, drift off and wake up refreshed, revived and ready for the rest of the day. I’m told that two of these mini-therapies also fit neatly into a lunch hour.

There are more than 90 eforea Spas around the world and the one I’ve come to visit was famously the first in the Middle East – it’s been here for 10 years. And if today’s experience is anything to go by, it’ll be here for years to come. Tiredness and dullness have been scrubbed away. I’ve been massaged so, so

thoroughly that I’m sure I’ll be feeling the benefits for days. As eforea promises, I do emerge brighter. Now all I have to do is work out when I’m going to come back to visit Ernie to experience an ELEMIS Superfood ProRadiance Facial or a traditional Thai Massage (or perhaps both). Because even though a caterpillar can metamorphose into a butterfly just once, I would rather like to do it every single week.

Beat the winter blues with La DoubleJ Resort 2023 creations. Embrace the festive season and step into the new year with bold, colourful patterns and unique silhouettes.

La DoubleJ is a Milanese brand that creates eye-catching fashion pieces and haute homeware. This Resort 2023 collection is a homage to Italy’s natural opulence featuring rich fabrications and exuberant prints. It offers a complete holiday wardrobe that takes you from gala to casual gatherings.

For the holiday party, an array of occasion-wear pieces with light-catching metallic accents, hand-placed prints and intricate embroideries crafted by the brand’s Italian artisan partners was created. Minimalists will delight in the monochrome pieces featuring silk separates and black-and-white botanicals. Maximalists can go the extra mile with feather-fringed pieces in eye-catching prints. With sequined dresses and kaftans, the brand kept in mind that sparkle is the statement for the season.

Joining the lineup is La DoubleJ’s first-ever silk and cotton pyjama capsule and a new line of 100% made-in-Italy shoes and bags crafted in metallic jacquards and the brand’s hallmark printed silks. The pyjama sets are cut from Italian silk and each piece arrives with a matching eye mask, robe and carrying case. The exciting news is that these pieces can easily slip from the bedroom to your business desk.

The brand’s first-ever trench coat arrives in two elegant iterations – a classic camel with a contrast printed silk collar and belt and a printed version. An extensive knit capsule comes crafted in cocooning shapes and fine Italian alpaca and merino yarns.

All the label’s creations – from its product design and pop-up shops to its collaborations – are distilled through a lens of pure joy, eye-popping colour and love for all things extravagant. It certainly follows the more is more concept.

THE MIDAS TOUCH

The end of the year is all about celebration and adding a touch of gold to your home will help you embrace the vibe. OHLALA brings some tips on including this metallic hue into your décor.

METALLIC SNOW

While combining gold and black could be tricky and sometimes too dramatic, going for gold and white is easier and chic. Combine white with earthy tones and natural hues as the base for gold accents. The palette can be used in kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms – it will give your space a refined and luxurious touch. The colour combo is great for those who love minimalism but want to add lively elements without shocking hues.

FUTURISTIC FOREST

If you are looking for something grand to pair with gold, opt for green. This combination is quintessentially festive, which is great for the holiday season. However, depending on the green tone, this colour combo can be a success the entire year. Deep jungle greens and splashes of gold accessories are a match made in tropical heaven. Go for deep, cool-toned greens such as teal for a sophisticated and elegant ambience.

If you want to add an eye-catching element, go for a sculpturelike piece of furniture. “Il Pavone (The peacock) is my allegory to luxury. This majestic animal never worries about survival; he doesn’t hide or escape. His time and energy are used to display his beauty,” says Marc Ange, a Franco-Italian artist and designer, about his capsule collection for Visionnaire. Visionnaire is a luxury brand of reference in the interior design sector Made in Italy.

PRECIOUS RAINBOW

According to Dunn-Edwards paints, the 2023 Colour of the Year is Terra Rosa. A deep dusty pink hue with a touch of terra-cotta influence. Combining gold and shades other than white and black can have an overwhelming result. According to architect Marilia La Marca, there’s a very thin line between what qualifies as chaotic and chic. So, it is important to be cautious, but she encourages it with a tip: “Don’t be scared and follow the rule of three, which is considered the perfect number in interior design. To find the right balance and harmony and to stay on the sophisticated, safe side, insert just three accents of gold in a coloured space.” The rule of three says that things arranged in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable and effective than even-numbered groupings.

THE GOLDEN RULE

The Middle Eastern modern interior design brand, Aura Living, believes that: “In contemporary art, gold continues to convey a multitude of different meanings and holds the symbols of prosperity, fortune and status. A gold colour palette is often used in home décor and artistic installations. However, one has to be very attentive and meticulous when incorporating this shade into their home interior. As much as it can add a touch of sophistication, too much gold can have quite the opposite effect on the aesthetic of your surroundings.”

Things to keep in mind when decorating with gold:

1. Add a touch of this metallic shade on a big surface. It can be on your floor with an interesting rug or a piece of modern art in gold hues to spice up your neutral space in a classy yet bold way.

2. Choose the real protagonist – an interesting, eclectic and unique piece of furniture, like an emblematic coffee table. The Eden Gold Center Table by Boca do Lobo is a good pick. The Eden Series explores organic shapes and their texture is influenced by trees and flora. Their unique forms are achieved through several manual processes delivered by an experienced team of craftsmen.

3. Add an accessory like a vase, a candle holder or a precious lamp, especially when involving vivid colours in the composition, like rusty pink and gold. Don’t forget: three is the magic number.

4. Mix and match different finishings. Play with shiny, matte and polished surfaces.

5. Balance little gold touches with big surfaces of plain or calm colours to give rhythm to the composition. Because, even if you give gold a little space, it will always try to steal the scene, to be the protagonist and the most sparkly element.

LAND OF THE RISING SUN

Japan recently opened its borders to all tourists following the pandemic and now might be the best moment to pay a visit. Apart from unique sightseeing landmarks, the country also offers a very particular cultural experience.

TRAVEL Escapes

Despite December being a cold month with the beginning of winter, temperatures don’t usually drop below zero and you will be exposed to picturesque scenery. The good thing about visiting touristic destinations during this time is that crowds are significantly smaller. There’s a wide range of things to see and do, from religious shrines and museums to beaches, hot springs and gardens. There are touristy gems to explore too, such as traditional tea ceremonies and noodle-making workshops. In this feature, we explore Tokyo and two regions offering some of Japan’s best.

TOKYO

Ueno Park is a popular city space lined with over 8,000 trees, including ginkgo, zelkova and cherry, it features a pond with an extensive lotus bed and attracts a variety of bird species during winter.

The cultural highlights at Ueno Park include Tokyo National Museum, the city’s most popular art museum. It houses a comprehensive collection of artwork and cultural objects from Asia with a focus on ancient and mediaeval Japanese and Asian art from along the Silk Road.

Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines are an important part of Tokyo’s landscape. There are several that you can visit in and around Ueno Park. You can’t miss Kan’ei-ji Temple’s five-storey pagoda. It’s one of the few structures in the original Buddhist temple complex that has withstood calamities such as war and fire. The original layout consisted of more than 30 buildings spread across a considerable area of the park. Kan’ei-ji Temple is home to an engraved stone said to be a memorial to the souls of insects that died during a scientific study – a testament to the Buddhist principle of non-violence.

Other popular religious sites in the vicinity include Sensō-ji, an ancient Buddhist temple and Tokyo’s oldest, located in Asakusa. There is quite a bit to cover here, from the Thunder Gate, featuring a massive, 700-kilogram paper lantern, to the two waraji or straw sandals, each weighing 400kg. Exploring all of this could easily take an entire day. However, Nakamisedōri, the shopping street, is lined with many food stalls so you can rest and grab a bite to eat.

Nature lovers can also explore Hama-rikyū Gardens. Beautifully landscaped, the gardens boast a teahouse that serves traditional Japanese tea and sweets. The Imperial Palace East Gardens are only a 10-minute walk from Tokyo station. Stroll through the grounds of the former Edo Castle and climb the ruins. While none of the main buildings remains today, the moats, walls, entrance gates and several guardhouses still exist. The garden itself is wonderful to behold, with colourful flowers and plants that bloom all year round. Often seen as a day trip from Tokyo, the mountain town of Nikko is the perfect base for Alpine sightseeing. You can opt for a hiking or bicycle tour. The scenic routes, with stunning views and colourful foliage, are a true feast for the senses.

KANAGAWA

This region is known for its mountains, rivers and sea as well as for being close to Japan’s capital. A tourist attraction in the area is Ōwakudani, a volcanic valley in Hakone. You can walk along the trail into the volcanic zone with numerous steam vents and bubbling pools. The views from here are to die for. A popular touristy thing to do is eat a boiled egg that’s cooked in the hot spring pools. Still in Hakone, you can enjoy a sightseeing cruise on Lake Ashi with a view of the nearby mountains and Mount Fuji. Located in Kamakura, the Kōtoku-in Temple is known for its Great Buddha, a 13-metre bronze statue that stayed up even during a tsunami in the 15th century. Also, in Kamakura, you will find Hōkoku-ji Temple, popular for its spectacular bamboo garden and a tea house where you can enjoy matcha green tea while taking in the surrounding views. Yokohama, the prefecture’s capital, has some interesting things to see and do. The CupNoodles Museum Yokohama, located in Minato Mirai 21, features exhibitions about instant noodles and hands-on workshops. Yokohama Chinatown, one of the biggest in the world, has numerous restaurants and food shops to try. Yamashita Park is a popular place to relax and take a walk while enjoying waterfront views of the Port of Yokohama. Sankei-en Garden in Naka Ward, a large traditional Japanese-style garden with ponds, streams and undulating pathways, is a favourite destination too.

OKINAWA

A group of islands located at the southwestern tip of the Japanese archipelago, close to Taiwan. Compared to the rest of Japan, winter in Okinawa is pleasantly warm, with temperatures of around 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. Home to magnificent beaches and coastlines teaming with corals and other underwater life, if you enjoy the tranquillity of spending some winter time by the sea, this is the ideal destination. Manza Beach, near Ishikawa, is well-known and, though it’s part of a resort, it’s open to the general public too. The 300-metre sandy stretch offers ample space to sunbathe or relax with family or friends. You can still enjoy water activities such as swimming, snorkelling and diving in December for those willing to embrace chillier water temperatures. Most tour companies offer wetsuit rentals. Other shores to watch out for include Furuzamami Beach, a popular snorkelling destination, in addition to offering other beach activities; Zanpa Beach, which is said to be one of the best for swimming even during low tide; Aharen Beach, which is budget-friendly and good for snorkelling; and Aragusuku Beach, known for its stunning coral reefs. Don’t miss the chance to take in the blue expanse standing atop Cape Manzamo, a distinctive rock formation, listening to the waves crashing against its walls. The place is located near Onna Village in the Kunigami District of Okinawa Prefecture.

Other attractions include Okinawa World a theme park in Nanjo, where you can explore the Gyokusendō, a massive, five-kilometre-long limestone cave, and sample the local snake-infused medicinal drink, habushu. In Naha, the district capital, you can explore traditional cuisine at Makishi Public Market, dubbed by the locals as the ‘Kitchen of Okinawa’. An erstwhile tributary state of imperial Ming China, Okinawa is known for its native Ryūkyūan culture, which is distinctly different from the mainland. Its cuisine is influenced by Chinese cooking styles. Okinawan soba is quite popular and made using flour rather than the traditional buckwheat. Gōyā Chanpurū, a stir-fry dish of bitter melon combined with eggs and tofu, is another staple.

OKINAWA LAKE ASHI KOTOKU-IN GREAT BUDDHA

A DIVERSE PALETTE OF FLAVOURS

To take you on an Indian gastronomic journey, Jamavar Doha is offering a new set menu. Luke Bennett visited to try the tasty dishes in a memorable dining experience.

84 www.ohlalamag.net

Arriving at the stylish and contemporary Jamavar at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, I was greeted by Jayant, a pleasant and welcoming waiter who consistently exuded enthusiasm and passion for his craft. His warm greeting matched the impressive décor and the subtle music resonating throughout the restaurant.

As I took my seat, Jayant explained that the newly launched set menu provides a tantalising selection of dishes and suggested beverages for each course – there is an extra fee for those who opt for the sommelier grape pairing. To celebrate India’s finest creations, diners can select two appetisers, a main and a dessert.

My culinary journey started with two rose lassis accompanied by a single red rose and a small silver chai pot: the theatre had arrived. The rose was submerged in liquid nitrogen and the frozen petals were delicately crumbled onto each rose lassi. Pleasingly, the yoghurt-based drink had the substance to match the style and proved to be a refreshing, cleansing beverage throughout the evening.

After the stage had been set, the first entrée arrived at our table: Lucknowi Gosht Haleem. Tearing a piece of the accompanying onion seed naan, I scooped up a mouthful of the rich, saporous stew and I was instantly taken aback by the complexity and depth of flavour that had developed during the slow, 24-hour braising of the spiced lamb. I have previously found naans to be heavy and filling, but the bread served at Jamavar was refreshingly light and crispy – acting as a tasty ‘spoon’.

Within minutes, more spectacular servings were bestowed upon me. Firstly, a surprisingly succulent and tender Murg Seekh Kebab which consisted of lightly spiced chicken mince that had been baked in a tandoori oven, supplemented by a fresh sprout salad (this entrée proved to be my partner’s highlight of the Indian feast). Next, Dakshini Jheenga, a juicy selection of southern-spiced prawns paired with a peanut and curry leaf chutney, awaited. It did not take long to wield my knife and smother the impressively sized prawns in the smooth, paste-like chutney. The Adraki Lamb Chops was one of the meatiest lamb chops I have had the pleasure of eating – tender and rich in flavour with a surprising, late kick of heat, which I was informed is a result of the royal cumin. The spicy sensation was instantly balanced by the clever addition of a light and refreshing fennel, carrot and ginger salad. The final appetiser – Edamame Bhel – was an elevated version of the Indian street food, Papdi, topped with edamame beans lightly soaked in date syrup. Due to the puffed rice’s crunchy texture and the syrup’s sweetness, this appetiser was my favourite from the impressive assortment served. Taking a break from the feast, I wandered around the unique space. I found that my attention kept being drawn back to an imposing brass archway embellished with intricate, golden patterns that led the way to a sophisticated apothecary bar. Before the main courses were served, Debdash Balaga (the skilled and personable Head Chef of Jamavar) downed his culinary tools to articulate his vision behind the set menu aptly named Celebration Menu (with a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian option). Beaming with enthusiasm and pride, Debdash explained how he aimed to develop a culinary experience that enabled clientele to savour a range of authentic Indian dishes. He explained how each of them is carefully crafted, radiating pleasurable levels of spice to be enjoyed by every diner – even those with a more sensitive palate.

86 www.ohlalamag.net

It was time to return to the food; thankfully, I still had room for mains and dessert. An Old Dehli Butter Chicken brought nostalgic memories of my time travelling in India. But this was a more refined version, less oily, with cashew, tomato and fenugreek gravy that smothered the generous portions of succulent meat. The Calicut Sea Bass Curry, a perfectly cooked fillet of fish prepared with a less-familiar spice, Malabar Tamarind, brought just a pinch more heat to the table.

Despite not being an option on the set menu, Chef Debdash insisted that I should try his new main course: Kolkata Style ‘Lamb Chops’ Biryani. I want to note that biryani would normally be my last pick but, as you might have guessed, this wasn’t another dry mound of rice with a morsel of overcooked meat hidden within. No! Layers of fluffy, flavoursome rice surrounded by tenderised, melt-in-your-mouth chunks of lamb all housed within a deep bowl topped with a toasted, onion seed naan. For me, this helping of moreish food was a welcomed surprise and completely flipped my opinion of biryanis.

Last, but by no means least, the sweet stuff: dessert! You can select between two options: a soft, mildly warm ‘Poached’ Carrot Halwa that had the perfect balance of sweetness or a spongy Mango Rasmalai which was submerged in a sugary yet refreshing mango shrikhand and topped with a delicately swirled punchy mango pulp.

If you are looking for refined yet quintessential Indian cuisine, then make sure to add Jamavar to the top of your dining list. This establishment’s elegant décor, knowledgeable staff and flavoursome food exceed their selfproclaimed title as a ‘culinary jewel of India’.

THE NEW ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST

THERE ARE LUXURY CARS AND THEN THERE IS ROLLS-ROYCE. THIS MONTH, OHLALA EXPERIENCED THE EPITOME OF REFINEMENT AND CLASS IN THE 2022 ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST.

92 www.ohlalamag.net

The Rolls-Royce Ghost is the brand’s most commercially successful product in its 116-year history. This overwhelming success allowed the brand to heavily invest their time, money and resources into establishing Rolls-Royce as a truly global brand. The first Ghost model was produced in 2009 and, since then, the design, craftsmanship and engineering have been further refined to result in the supreme machine we see today.

Since Rolls-Royce unveiled the 2022 Ghost, the model has received praise from career critics and enthusiasts alike. OHLALA was fortunate enough to receive the opportunity to thoroughly inspect as well as to test-drive the latest generation Ghost, compliments of the exceptional team at RollsRoyce Motor Cars Doha.

EXTERIOR

The moment the new Ghost came into view, we needed a few minutes of silence to fully comprehend the craftsmanship that stood before us. Over the years, OHLALA magazine has had the privilege of inspecting many a fine vehicle, however, the class exuded by the Ghost outshone anything we had previously encountered.

It’s easy to see that the Ghost has been a labour of love for the brand – a car that has evolved through their constant appreciation of modern luxury coupled with traditional class.

The front of this full-sized luxury saloon is framed by sharp bow lines that intersect with an angular light signature, creating an assertive yet aesthetically pleasing front end. Additionally, the Ghost has been designed with a celestial element to its character, with 20 LEDs underneath the top of the pantheon grille gently illuminating the vehicle’s vanes.

The minimalistic approach taken by the Rolls-Royce design team in their quest to obtain uncluttered perfection, led them to hand-welding the aluminium body structure. The result is the main structure of the car appearing as one fluid canvas, an effect we have never previously seen accomplished in this precise manner. The Spirit of Ecstasy emblem holds its position at the front and centre of the car’s bonnet, above the coveted Rolls-Royce badge, her forward posture inciting us to get behind the wheel and out onto the open road.

93 www.ohlalamag.net DIVA
Drives
“The class exuded by the Ghost outshone anything we had previously encountered.”

Drives

At the flanks, a single straight stroke emphasises the Ghost’s considerable length, whilst the lower ‘waft line’ uses reflection to lighten the surface of the car. The back doors of the Ghost are rear-hinged, with the windows of both the front and back self-closing doors sharing equal proportions. This design element clearly reveals an achievement of balance between the Ghost being both a driver-orientated and a chauffeur-driven vehicle. The dynamic intent of the car is further revealed by the subtle arch of the roofline, along with the 21-inch wheels, complete with centre caps that do not move when the car is travelling, ensuring the Rolls-Royce logo always remains upright. The exterior of the new Ghost is rendered as one clean, expansive piece that flows seamlessly from the A-pillar, over the roof and to the tapered back end, where it culminates in an understated, near square light graphic – a standard element of contemporary Rolls-Royce design.

INTERIOR

The uber-skilled craftspeople at Rolls-Royce applied their minimalistic design approach to the interior, an environment we could easily inhabit on a daily basis. Only the very best materials have been used throughout the vehicle, including the finest wood, leather and metals money can buy. The perfect stitchwork of the upholstery and leather finishes has been meticulously executed, creating incredibly long and perfectly straight lines of sheer mastery. Additionally, the Dark Amber finish of our Ghost model integrated fine veins of aluminium particles into the dark wood, adding yet another touch of magic to an already enchanting internal setting.

94 www.ohlalamag.net DIVA

Further contributing toward the entrancing nature of the Ghost’s interior is the Illuminated Fascia – a world-first innovation that subtly echoes the Starlight Headliner already fitted in previous models. This remarkable design piece brings an ethereal glowing Ghost nameplate, surrounded by more than 850 stars, into the interior suite of the car. A truly remarkable innovation. Rolls-Royce have not only considered our safety when designing the 2022 Ghost, but our health as well – with the latest models including a new Micro-Environment Purification System (MEPS). Highly sensitive Impurity Detection Sensors constantly monitor the exterior environment’s air quality and automatically switch from fresh air intakes to Recirculation Mode if unacceptable levels of airborne contaminants are detected. Air is then channelled through a nano-fleece filter, that removes almost all ultrafine particles from the interior in less than two minutes. Our final observation of the interior involves the serenity of the Ghost’s cabin. Rolls-Royce have used over 100kg of acoustic damping material along with interior components that are tuned to a specific resonant frequency to create the most peaceful setting possible. Alternatively, you can opt for a livelier environment through the use of the 18-speaker bespoke sound system that reveals Rolls-Royce’s dedication to achieving acoustic perfection.

INFOTAINMENT & CONNECTIVITY

The 2022 Ghost houses a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that runs on BMW’s iDrive system – not a surprise as the German brand in fact owns Rolls-Royce. This system is perfect in its simplicity and is as userfriendly as they come. It offers compatibility and wireless connection with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Included also are 12.5 gigs of internal storage space, a 12-month subscription to Sirius XM, integrated navigation with voice activation and real time traffic information.

95 www.ohlalamag.net

Drives

An optional theatre configuration is available which adds dual 12-inch displays to the rear of the vehicle, allowing passengers to partake in their favourite programmes whilst on the move.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

We simply could not wait to drive and to be driven in the new Ghost, and we admit to giggling like school children when the ignition was engaged. The sound and feeling of the 6.75-litre, twin-turbocharged V12 was enough to give us goosebumps and is exactly what we expected from a Rolls-Royce. This beast of an engine is coupled with an eight-speed transmission and delivers 563bhp and 850Nm of torque to the all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering setup. This translates to a 0 - 100km time of five seconds flat and an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. Add the Planar Suspension System to the equation and we experienced why it is referred to as the marque’s ‘Magic Carpet Ride’. This system is the result of 10 collective years of testing and development to create a sense of flight on land – a feat never before achieved by a motor car. And it works! We hardly felt a bump in the road throughout our extended journey. In fact, we have never experienced a more responsive and smooth driving experience in all our years of test driving. The first-class braking system was more than up to the task of taming the abundance of power on offer and we effortlessly negotiated every twist and turn laid before us, along with the busy city streets - where we received our fair share of both envious stares and awestruck expressions.

96 www.ohlalamag.net DIVA

SAFETY & ASSISTANCE

The 2022 Ghost is the most technologically advanced motor car Rolls-Royce has ever produced. This is proven through features such as the LED and laser headlights that offer more than 600m of illuminated range, ensuring great night-time visibility. Additional safety and assistance systems include vision assist; day- and night-time pedestrian and wildlife warning; active cruise control; alertness assist; a four-camera system with panoramic view; all-round visibility and helicopter view; collision warning; lane departure and lane changing warning, along with cross-traffic warning.

Additionally, we found the industry-leading 7x3 high-resolution headup display to be the very best we have ever experienced. Wi-Fi hotspot; self-park; and the very latest navigation systems have also been included in the 2022 Ghost.

OUR VERDICT

It’s a Rolls-Royce.

Be Kind Rewind

According to Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” That is an important reflection for societies and a crucial element in the study of history. But when applying the same concept in our own lives, it can teach us a lot about ourselves.

Repeating actions is not necessarily a bad thing. Reflecting on past situations can help you avoid the not-so-good ones and reinforce the positive events. So, what is the best way to do it? Here go some ideas:

- Make a list of the things you’ve done this year that you are most proud of and take note of the things you are not so keen to repeat.

- Tidy up your space and put in evidence objects that bring good memories. It can be a recent trip souvenir or a gift from a beloved friend.

- When it comes to your wardrobe, get rid of clothes that bring you bad juju and wear more often the ones that give you joy and are associated with good feelings.

- 2022 was a year of re-discovering social gatherings, so print out some of your best moments and frame them or put them on your fridge. We usually gravitate to old photographs, but it is important to have the recent past close by to show you that you have been living your life at your best. Sometimes we think that only situations from many years ago were good and that it is not really true.

Your past has led and shaped you to where and who you are today. However, no matter what you discover while digging into it, please don’t forget to be kind to yourself.
