We give you an exclusive interview with Italian Wedding Designer Peter Langner taking you behind-the-scenes of the curation of such masterpieces. Being a Bride-to-be myself I have loved compiling this Bridal Issue and it has provided an abundance of inspiration from all aspects - some of which I hadn’t initially thought of, including catering! Van Cleef & Arpels also shone a light on the Pâquerette watch, a novelty recently launched at the Salon International of the Haute Horlogerie (Geneva, 15th – 19th January 2018), illustrating the talent of the Maison’s stone experts, who managed to successfully form an enchanting garden, rich in delicate shades of diamonds, sapphires and tsavorite garnets. Thematically, the ‘Roaring Twenties’ have exerted a strong influence: much of the jewellery recalls the freedom, extravagance, and modernism which so marked that period. Sumptuous textiles are evoked by creations that imitate the fabric of fine garments. Ornaments like buttons, zips, pom-poms,and ribbons are transformed into a glittering interplay of metal and precious stones. Consequently, the Maison has given pride of place to flora, contributing all the excellence of its savoir-faire to enrich its watchmaking universe that depicts the passage of the hours with a precious sparkle.

When Debaj emerged there was nothing like it. The luxurious fabrics, the detailed-by-hand embroidery and the refreshing new cuts made Debaj one of the pioneer abaya brands in the GCC. How did Debaj as a brand start? Debaj was founded in 2009, in its first years our unique designs inspired by the timeless beauty of the regions Islamic architecture as well as the simplicity of the geometric designs found in Islamic art, the brand quickly became synonymous with quality, tradition, and glamour. What do you like your pieces to represent? Our pieces should represent elegance, a red carpet look is what we wish our customers to think of when they think of Debaj. What materials do you love using? We use many various fabrics from silks to velvet, we import all of our fabric from Europe and make sure they are of the finest quality. Why is your participation at the 13th Edition of HEYA important and beneficial for the brand? Heya represents fashion in Qatar and we are proud to have started our brand in Qatar and 50

grateful to all our clients and support from our customers, therefore, being part of HEYA is always on our list. When was your concept of creating this brand first ignited? When we started brainstorming about what Debaj would be we thought of couture abayas; real couture abayas since there were no true couture collection of abayas yet. We developed the plan and started gradually, first was introducing Debaj as a brand and creating more brand awareness, then we continued to improve each new collection bringing our brand to the level of couture pieces that are intricately made for our special client. What is your inspiration behind each piece? From the very start, each piece must fit it’s owner like a glove. How far has the abaya come in terms of being a fashion rather than a cultural statement? Abayas have always been fashionable according to which generation were using them, we can remember many types of abayas and name them as well. What has changed is that abayas are now related to brands, before it did not matter which brand your abaya was as long as it was nice and in fashion, that has changed during the past nine years, now it is also very important to know which brand a particular abaya is from, it has become a symbol of status. Is there a particular country that has influenced your most successful collection of abayas? All of our collections have a special place in our hearts since each was unique and thought of with much love, but, we must say that the one that still stands out the most was the Masaco collection inspired by the cherry blossoms in Japan where we also had our photo shoot. What is the future vision for evolving your brand? We see Debaj soon being recognised as a couture brand internationally, this is one of our main goals and we do believe that if we put our mind to it we will be able to reach it. Born out of the minds of Omani sisters, Lubna and Nadia, Endemage is focused on revolutionising the world of high end women’s wear and Arab fashion, offering a more edgy and modern take on upscale dressing.

H

ow did Endemage as a brand start? It started off as a college project when co founder and creative designer Lubna Al Zakwani was studying fashion design & business at Esmod Dubai. She was inspired and passionate about the Omani culture and heritage and its strong connection with art & design. In 2011, the brand came to light after she produced her first runway collection with an eastern vibe applying modern techniques in creating the pieces. What do you like your pieces to represent? The rich Omani culture that’s evident in interiors, nature, craftsmanship, & strong influence from neighbouring countries such as Yemen, India, & Zanzibar What materials do you love using? We love to experiment with different fabrics & materials. We’re always looking for fabrics that complement our intricate embroidery that is drawn from the Omani culture and seen in traditional garments Throughout your SPRING/SUMMER and/or your Fall/ Winter collection you reference style, luxury and comfort whilst travelling, how do you maintain this? Through designing & creating loose and flowing cuts. For previous collections, we created well thought out separates that are beautiful as well as comfortable. We designed a set of loose cut dresses with signature embroidered trims, in addition to loose culottes that are adorned with ultra elegant threads of embroidery shapes inspired by architecture & nature. In our abaya collections, we consider modest dressing and introduced exclusively made colourful pieces in pastels and soft tones, embellished elegantly. We are experimental with different loose and straight cuts such as kimono style abayas that fit within the modest dressing direction in fashion and complement streetwear in a unique way. How do you feel about minimalist jewellery becoming increasingly popular? Minimalism signifies symbols & natural looks, sometimes real & raw designs highlight the beauty of the person wearing these styles. We believe in simple dressing however we also carefully think about ways in adding our signature that makes us distinctive. Why is your participation at the 13th Edition of HEYA important and beneficial for the brand? Being at the HEYA exhibition adds great value to our brand. We enjoy a great relationship with our Qatari based clients and we are happy to be close to them and meet them to understand their tastes better and what they look for in fashion. What’s your future vision for the brand? We are extremely proud with our accomplishments and grateful and we hope to see the brand enjoying success globally and catering to the leading women of the future What is your inspiration behind each piece? 52

It primarily depends on the theme per season. We find beauty in everything related to our culture and identity How far has the abaya come in terms of being a fashion rather than a cultural statement? It’s is now officially a fashion statement and is appreciated by many that didn’t grow up with it as part of their culture. We have seen many looks inspired by abaya style and the khaleeji streetstyle scene during SS18 and FW18 fashion seasons. The abaya has evolved into a truly stylish staple piece that every wardrobe needs. The beauty in the fabrics, cuts, embellishments & colours added to the traditional abaya style transformed it into a luxurious item that adds a sense of unique style to your outfit. It’s a versatile piece that can be styled in many creative ways depending on the woman’s personality and taste. What is the key to a cutting-edge, unique and versatile abaya? All the details starting from the actual cut of the abaya that proves style & comfort, the type of fabric used that falls beautifully on the woman’s body, & of course we love adding embroidery that’s unique to us and we believe gives it a feminine feel Is there a particular country that has influenced your most successful collection of abayas? All our collections are inspired by khaleeji culture and influenced by Indian luxury bridal fashion seen in the intricate embellishments. OHLALA Spotlight Congratulations on the official opening of ESPA Mondrian Doha! Tell us how you started out in the wellness industry? I’ve had a passion for health since childhood - my grandmother was a herbalist and my mother was in medicine, so it has always been an inherent interest of mine. My early career in the 60’s began in health and beauty journalism, though a deeper interest in spa therapies soon developed and I opened my first business, a salon in Toronto, in the 70’s, where I learnt therapy from a medical perspective through my Eastern European therapists. On my return to Europe in 1980 I managed a Thalassotherapy Resort in France and on my return to the UK I spent four years as General Manager of a destination wellness resort. I was MD of a spa company with 11,000 therapists at sea before I founded my own spa company in 1988 and launched ESPA the brand in 1993. The spa industry back then didn’t exist in the way that we know it today, and it was my early experiences that gave me the vision of combining health and beauty, mind and body, natural and scientific. It sounds so straightforward now, but back then it was quite revolutionary! What’s your advice for someone who wants to start a business in the wellness industry? It’s important to have a deep knowledge of the subject, not just an interest in health and wellbeing. It needs to be a passion and you need to have a strong interest in people and what makes them tick. You need to be able to choose very good and talented staff who can work together as a team sharing their knowledge and with a true passion for making people better and living a better life.

How do you deal with negativity? Every day I wake up and am thankful for the things in my life that I love and have achieved. I have trained a lot with energy work; angry and negative people are usually unhappy with themselves and if you don’t rise to the bait and stay positive yourself, they usually back off. Positive energy deflects negativity. I try not to have negative people around me. There is a difference between negativity and times in your life when you have tragedy or difficulty. It is how you bounce back that is important - resilience. What would you declare as your number one beauty secret? I regularly travel for work so I love to relax by spending time at home. I have spas at home and pools in both houses where I can exercise, be in the fresh air, eat organically and be with my growing family and friends. I always do my breath work. I’m lucky to be surrounded by trees at home so I open the doors to my garden and take several deep breaths, inhaling the good quality fresh air. I breathe in through the nose for four seconds and out through the mouth for eight seconds. During the winter months I try to spend more time in the warmer climates and am fortunate to have a second home abroad which makes this possible. What do you love about the Middle East? I love the glamour of the Middle East, the various cultures, the food, flavours and smells, the weather (other than summer). How would you describe a woman who visits ESPA? The ESPA woman is conscious of the ingredients she uses and chooses products that help her to achieve naturally beautiful skin. She is looking for results driven formulas and likes to take the time to apply her products and enjoy the emotional benefits of the aromatics in her skincare regime to help balance her body and mind. We have been working on the preparations of the Indian wedding for the past 12 months and it has been really important to plan and orchestrate the wedding in every intricate detail. Do you create the overall vision, or are you more of a producer who brings in an event designer? It really depends what the client is looking for. Many of the clients like to bring in a designer. Many events on the other hand are handled by our wedding planner team. How have you handled the event styling? We have been working hand-in-hand with luxury wedding 58

How many weddings have you planned? Close to 200 a year with 5 to 10 Royal Weddings being held on our island next to the hotel. Do you have a one wedding per day policy? Not really. It depends on the availability of the space. We want to make sure we cater the best services to provide our clientele with the most remarkable wedding. Will you be handling the invitations, from wording and ordering to the addressing and mailing? What about guest list coordination and RSVPs? On this occasion it has been handled by their wedding planner

During the wedding arrangement, it has been really important to bring individuals who know the Indian traditions. From our Sales Leader, to our Executive Chef and Guest Relations Manager, many ladies and gentlemen from India have also been involved to make sure all the traditions are maintained and respected throughout the wedding. We also had the pleasure to go to India to attend one of the family’s weddings to experience a traditional Indian wedding ourselves first-hand which has allowed for a greater sense of authenticity and expectation.

This is the time to get your skincare regime into full gear. You should be cleansing you skin twice a day (no excuses) and exfoliating three times a week with a low irritant exfoliator. Invest in the highest quality anti-aging day and night creams you can afford and don’t forget that serums are your new best friend (you can even layer different ones for best results). You should also be wearing SPF everyday under your make-up and anywhere that the sun hits your skin. Chest, ears, neck, back of hands etc.

The ballroom, and hotel in general, is well equipped for the high temperatures and humidity that Qatar faces every summer. The ballroom especially has continuous check-ups prior to events to ensure that everything is in working order, especially the air conditioning. The engineering team is also on hand to ensure that any glitches will be taken care of immediately.

The Black Stage is very on trend this season, with many guests choosing to have it as the main feature rather than the traditional white raised stage. UNVEILED JAYNE GREEN exclusively talks to PETER LANGNER who has been synonymous with excellence, imagination, and refinement about his Bridal Collection 2018 to jam and marmalade.

W

hat’s your favourite style from your latest collection? I love Sylvia as it is so unique and uncommon, but also Eva, which has become so popular because of ts fitting. We have experimented new cuts which have been very successful. How do you decide on the names of your collections? Every gown is dedicated to a woman. I choose only female names. The sound of the name or the face of a woman I’ve met in my career that inspires me allows me to choose that name and give it to a particular gown. How many Peter Langner brides are there every year? I meet many in my atelier in Milan, usually not during the first appointment as I do not want to influence the choice of the gown, however, I do like to be present during the fitting as I want to be sure the gown is perfectly made and fits perfectly. I love details. All my gowns are intricately detailed, and perfectly finished. The seams and hems of couture gowns are hand-finished, smooth, invisible and comfortable against the skin. Can you give a little overview of how you came to be a bridal designer? I graduated at L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de Paris, worked for Christian Dior, Emmanuel Ungaro, and Christian Lacroix. When I moved to Rome I felt it was the right time for me to start creating my own collections. It was due to my love of all things which are of the best quality. Fine fabrics, fine art, fine food, fine sculptures and so on. It is a natural outgrowth of who I am. Everything in my life is about fine quality and beauty so it was simply natural. 84

When you start to design a new collection, what is the process? Do you start with an overview of what you want to collection to be or a mood board with the elements you want to include? My team and I come up with the concept, and the next step is experimenting with materials in our workroom in Milan. Once the performance of the materials have been verified, what follows is the design and execution of the garments, in a continuous dialogue between all parties involved. This teamwork is essential and includes various intermediate stages: illustrating the idea on paper, iconographic research, making swatches of embroidery and other materials, having the fabric produced in our artisanal workroom and finally constructing the garment on the form, into an ideal synthesis of Peter Langner‘s femininity. It’s intense work on a daily basis, lasting for three or four months, until I give its approval. What part of the design process do you enjoy most? I love sourcing for new fabrics! We used over 170 different fabrics in the last collection. We do a lot of research and have different people creating our fabrics so that they are exclusive to us. What are your design influences right now? There is no specific inspiration to get started. I usually try to have a clear head, a focused mind, free from distractions

when I begin with a new collection.I’m a lover of great architecture and it translates into my bridal creations. Where do you look to spot ‘trends’ and keep abreast with what brides are looking for? I follow my inspiration and I work hard with my team on new techniques. We continuously reinvent materials. This is a very big part of the work: research and experimenting but always with an eye to the woman we want to dress and to her needs, which change from country to country and generation to generation. That’s why I try to travel as much as I can and meet my brides. I need a dialogue with them to understand what they want. What are your favourite materials/embellishments to work with? Most of our fabrics are Italian, even though I always look for something different and new. So, my eyes are always open for new fresh ideas. A fabric is very important to give the gown the right shape and body. You choose the wrong fabric and the most amazing idea is lost. Every 86

collection is different: last year we used porcelain petals, fringed raffia, small chiffon square fabrics folded in little cubes and then sewn on tulle fabrics. We invent new solutions every season. What, in your opinion, sets your brand apart? What are your core values? Our gowns are couture gowns. They are really done one by one and the hand work really shows in the final result. Our trims are silk satin or silk organza and not just an applied ribbon. The laces are all placed by hand and are ensured that they fall the right way. The gowns are cut and made in a way that they follow the movement of the woman. Very often brides tell me “I don’t want a gown which stands whilst I move”. Tell us what do you do to relax? How do you escape from the wedding world? My pets first of all: my dog Aladino and my cat Luna and then cooking – the art of being relaxed whilst enjoying genuine food directly from my countryside’s garden. What are the most important things brides should keep in mind whilst choosing their gown? Listen carefully but choose with your heart. Less is more. Simplicity is the essence of elegance. If you weren’t designing wedding dresses, what do you think you would be doing? I would be making jam and marmalade in my countryside’s house. What should we expect next from your label? We are now working on the 2019 Collection which will be showcased next month in Milan, New York and Barcelona. I’m so proud of it! It is the full expression of my creativity combined with the expertise of my seamstresses and unusual experiments and combinations of new materials and techniques. I will surprise you! As a Bride-to-be myself I was keen to explore the treatments and ‘journeys’ available prior to the ‘Big Day’. Throughout the process, from the initial contact on arrival at CHI Spa a lot of emphasis was placed upon myself as an individual and my hopes and expectations for my time at CHI manifested themselves in an unobtrusive manner as I completed a consultation with my therapist. Before I had even begun to enjoy the Spa experience I felt nurtured and important. The term ‘clients’ is too impersonal and sterile for those visiting the CHI Spa, therefore, I will use the term ‘guests’ as this hints at the level of care afforded to everyone. Guests are welcomed with Peppermint Tea upon arrival as it is renowned for its ability to improve digestion, reduce pain, eliminate inflammation, relax the body and mind, aid in weight loss and boost the immune system. As you can imagine I began to feel better immediately!

The outdoor pool is set amidst a large naya surrounded by herbaceous planted areas. It can offer as exhilarating an experience as you desire and combined with the warmth of the sun and aromatics of the plants it begins to refuel your physical and emotional self. A little reluctantly, I left the pool and settled into my suite with adjoining steam room which was my next destination. Many of the benefits of the treatments are subcutaneous and therefore open pores are the order of the day. Having been enveloped in a cashmere robe and thoroughly hydrated I queried whether or not it would be possible to heighten my senses and levels of relaxation any further. The Ku Nye Massage and facial which followed settled my quandary. The consultation process plays an important part in determining the finer details of each treatment and I settled upon the ORE aroma which combines Clove, Orris and Ylang Ylang to stimulate a sense of euphoria. You may choose to take the ‘calming and comforting’ experience or equally remove scent completely. The massage tables seemed to cocoon my body providing support and comfort. Each knotted muscle, representing a portion of wedding planning, daily chores and pressures of work were kneaded precisely whilst Empa, the therapist, was careful not to lose the sense of relaxation I had requested. She expertly activated my ‘chakra’ . I was then transported to the tropical rainforest for my rejuvenating facial. Organic products are used to exfoliate, cleanse and purify the skin. The ingredients and techniques are combined to nourish and stimulate circulation in order to restore your ‘glow’ and as I looked in the mirror after the treatment I knew that said glow was also a restoration of myself after lack of ‘me-time’. WHAT IS PLATELET-RICH-PLASMA (PRP) THERAPY? The best way to summarise PRP is that it is a new form of regenerative medicine that utilises nothing but the patient’s own blood. WHAT ARE PLATELETS? Platelets are a crucial part of the body’s ability to stop bleeding and to repair damaged blood vessels and cells in the body. A good way to think of them is as ‘little powerhouses’ which release proteins (called growth factors) when they become activated by contact with the body’s tissue. This activation promotes tissue repair and collagen production. WHICH AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH PRP THERAPY? 1. Fine lines & creases on the forehead 2. Hair loss 3. Crepiness of the upper eyelid 4. Dark circles 5. Smile lines & open pores 6. Nasolabial folds 7. Poor skin texture 8. Back of the hands 9. Necklace lines & turkey neck 10. Crepiness of the décolletage •One of the real strengths of PRP is for rejuvenation of the under-eye area. This is a notoriously difficult area to treat and there are very few effective treatments available. PRP can improve the skin quality and decrease dark circles in this area. • You can inject PRP into any areas where you would inject dermal filler. It won’t have the same effect as filler, as the two treatments work in different ways. However it will stimulate collagen production in this area which will plump this area with time. •Open pores bother many people and are 92

again a very difficult problem to treat. PRP helps to tighten these stubborn pores as well as improving the overall skin quality. • With age many people notice the texture of the skin on their chin changes and looks quite coarse, which can be greatly improved with PRP. • Hair loss is a very exciting area for treatment with PRP. Provided the hair follicles are intact PRP can stimulate new hair growth. This is particularly noticeable with treatment around the eye areas, where patients report increased lash growth. It can also be injected directly into the eyebrow and into the scalp to treat hair loss in these areas. • PRP can be used to firm a turkey neck, and can be injected into the lines that run horizontally around our neck (necklace lines), for which there are very few other treatment options. • The backs of the hands and décolletage can be plumped and the skin quality improved with PRP. • There is increasing evidence for PRP as a treatment for stretch marks, with patients reporting decreased size of their stretch marks. • PRP can be injected into any scars and will improve appearance by stimulating collagen production.

HOW MANY PRP TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? Treatment protocols will vary from patient to patient. We generally advise that patients over the age of 40 will need a course of 3 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Younger patients may only need 1, and some patients may require more dependent on their indications.

IS PRP THERAPY PAINFUL? Because the local anesthetic cream is left to work for a long time, most patients don’t find the treatment painful.

IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD AVOID AFTER MY PRP TREATMENT? Routinely, we apply a layer of PPP to the face as a serum at the end of the treatment. This means that you will be leaving with this on your skin. Try to avoid touching your face for the rest of the day, and avoid cleansing or moisturising your skin until the morning after treatment. Avoid applying makeup until the morning after your treatment too.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM PRP THERAPY? Patients of any age can benefit from PRP therapy. Younger patients will notice an improvement in their skin quality, as well as targeting any early concerns they may have. As patients get older and show more signs of ageing there will be more specific areas to target.

WILL I NOTICE RESULTS IMMEDIATELY? Most people start to notice results themselves around 3-4 weeks with continuous improvements upto 6-12 months after treatment. ARE THE RESULTS OF PRP THERAPY PERMANENT? They are long-lived but not permanent. We advise people to have a maintenance treatment once a year after their initial course. WHAT ARE THE SIDE-EFFECTS OF PRP TREATMENTS? Because the treatment involves only injection of your own blood with nothing added to it, it is very safe. Side-effects, if they occur at all, are usually mild to moderate.

I say treat because it’s usually pricey paying for prime meat imported from Australia or America. From the moment you arrive at Prime, the quality is of a high standard. Excellent service is complimented by quality food and ingredients. Gorgeous fresh bread adorned the table as we chose our dishes and they were accompanied by three butters; a mixed herb, tomato and a salted butter respectively. The appetizers were award worthy and astonishingly impressive. The signature dish par excellence must surely be the braised short ribs which have been slow cooked for thirty six hours! Yes, you could fly to London and back three times and they’d still be sitting in that oven! They were punctuated in a roasted butternut and wasabi spinach sauce. The end result was the tastiest ribs I have ever eaten. Prime has recently overhauled its menu by stripping back the pages of options and decluttered it down to a simple one paged board that you can see all at a mere glance. It’s introduced some new items and optimised its classic signature pieces. It’s a kind of back-to-basics approach or put another way, trying to do what they do really well, even better! One of their new dishes is the sous vide red chilli prawns from their appetisers list. The prawns are served with coconut infused butternut squash and carrot and a not too hot but wholly complimentary Thai red chilli sauce. And old favourite - the five spice and coriander duck cooked at fifty degrees remains firmly on the menu. We could see the chef preparing the steaks in a glass box. They care deeply about their steak and are keen to convey that to you. They show you in the menu the degree to which they can prepare your steak in six stages from blue to well done via medium and medium rare. Sauces were on point. To be different I went for Tennessee bourbon BBQ which added a smoky texture to my meat. They offer three excellent choices, striploin, tenderloin and rib eye. I rather liked that simplicity across the menu. You’re given a choice but not burdened by it. If the steak itself did not leave me speechless, then the sides definitely did. The truffle mash is superb and the crispy shiitake mushrooms were so moreish that 100 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Not like your average soggy mushroom, these were crisp, salty and had just a slight kick to get you addicted! In the end, a steakhouse has to really offer something extra to justify the cost and to avoid being, well, just another steak house. Prime is an example of somewhere that knows how to really bring it. It’s a definitive escapism where you’ll be treated especially well and where you are in for more than just a prime cooked steak. Founder and Event Planner, Nyla Maharaj-Ramkalawan, talks about the importance of planning an event or a wedding and why the experience of Events by Nyla sets the tone for any event worth talking about.

H

ow long have you been in the business as an Events Coordinator? Officially for just over 12 years, but I have been assisting friends and some institutions pro-bono before registering Events by Nyla in Denmark. Yes, Events by Nyla was founded in Denmark where I lived for six years before relocating to Doha in 2011. When I started working in Qatar, I operated under the name Balloon DĂŠcor & More as I was introducing a totally new concept in balloons 108 www.ohlala-magazine.com

which, up until then, Qatar did not yet have the privilege of experiencing. Most other companies only knew of simple balloon arches, columns and helium-inflated balloons either loosely arranged into bouquets or flown to the ceiling. I am often referred to as the Pioneer in WOW Factor Balloon Creations in Doha, and this is a title which I hold with great pride! In order to give equal justice to all the services that I offer, extensive rebranding was undertaken to relaunch Events by Nyla in Doha last December. What factors do you consider when choosing an event venue?

I would say that the event budget is one of the first considerations to take into account! Once this is established, I would then assess feasibility of hosting based on current reputation regarding catering, security especially if there will be many high-profile guests, venue capacity, travel and parking convenience for guests, suitability of the venue for the type of event, current reputation of the venue with regards to their customer service and support. These are just a handful of the factors that I start with. It is extremely important that the event venue matches the tone of the event. As an example, I would most probably


never consider hosting a Qatari wedding or a “Black-Tie” function in a hotel or other event hall that has less than a 5-Star rating. You have to set the tone from the very beginning. What are your strategies for dealing with irate clients? As a professional, I aim to always maintain a level of calm and try to transfer this psyche to my clients. To be brutally honest though, I haven’t had to deal with more than two irate clients during my 12 plus years in this field. There are many possible causes of a client’s anger and I try not to take their comments personally and to be sincerely sympathetic to them. You have to put yourself in their shoes at times. This is their special day and they would like every element of their event to be perfect. What are some of the ways you measure event success? The look on my client’s face after I have delivered his/her event is my greatest marker of success! Another significant marker for me is whether I have grown in my professional capabilities from the event in question. Were there challenges that I was able to overcome with ease? Was I able to translate my client’s dream into a reality? If I were able to answer in the affirmative to these two questions following the event, then it was indeed successful, and I can continue soaring to greater heights. Have you ever planned multiple events at the same time? How did you prioritise your time and resources to meet critical deadlines? Oh yes, I have done this on several occasions! However, I rarely commit to more than one large-scale event for the same day, as I am always on hand for such events to ensure that each element is being executed with precision and up to the standards of Events by Nyla. How many weddings have you participated in? You’ve taken me back to circa 19 years ago when I planned each and every detail of my very own fairytale wedding! We hosted just about 350 guests and since then I have been considering entering the niche of Wedding Planners! I contributed to the concept for a few weddings but not as the official Wedding Coordinator. Do you have a portfolio of weddings that you’ve recently done that Brides-to-be can browse? Unfortunately, not at the moment as I am now adding Weddings to my portfolio. Stay tuned

as I will soon be creating samples of wedding settings that promises to WOW brides-to-be and take weddings in Doha to the next level. My slogan is ‘Everlasting Moments’ and I pride myself in delivering this to my clients by applying luxury in every intricate detail! How would you describe your design style? (e.g. traditional, modern, rustic, organic) I would definitely say traditional for my personal style, but at times one may see me as a bit eclectic. I am a bit of a chameleon, adapting easily to meet the needs/tastes of my clients. At

the end of the day, I feel that it’s not really about my style but moreover the style of my clients. The organic design style is quite trendy at the moment, and I quite enjoy delivering setups that follow its respective principles. Which flowers would you recommend based on the time of year/season and colour palette? The colour palette which are perfect for Spring and Summer weddings comprise of pastel hues of pinks, purples/lilac, orange/coral, green, blue, and yellow. Although roses are still the universal example of the flower which symbolizes “love” and hence, widely used for weddings; I like to combine with other blooms such as hyacinths and orchids as highlighted in today’s setting. My all-time favorite “pick” is still the Calla Lily which I used in my bridal bouquet. There’s just something so graceful about this species! If I gave you a picture of a bouquet and/or centerpiece that I like, can you recreate it? Of course, I can! However, I will discourage you from recreating it exactly as your sample image. I would use it as a guideline but put “my twist’ on it. I like to create unique pieces for all my décor items. Whilst I think that it’s ok to take inspiration from other artists, I sway from supporting exact replicas. With the explosion of social media platforms in recent years, I feel that there’s too much copying of other people’s work. What other décor elements can you provide (aisle runner, candelabras, trees, chuppah, votives, mirrors, etc.)? Whatever you need in the line of accent décor, I can provide! Events by Nyla handles the A to Z of Events. Do you create sample arrangements before signing a contract? Depending on the scale of the event, yes, I do! If it is not feasible, I may show images of similar setups/arrangements. Will you work with a cake designer if there is a decision to add flowers to the wedding cake? I am hands-on with each of my vendors and work closely with them to ensure that we are matching all the requests of my clients. Can you assist with the preservation of the bouquet after the wedding? If not, can you recommend someone? Yes, we definitely can! I know how important it is to many brides to preserve their wedding bouquets as their personal memento from their special day! I’M NOT A BRIDEZILLA Never a one to follow the norm, Miss Ohlala bucks the stereotypical trend of a woman who is planning her own wedding in an erratic fashion. Last Winter some lovely self-preserving impulse came over my blushing partner, and one golden afternoon in Scotland he got down on one knee and proposed to the woman he loves...me. Yeah, that could have been awkward. He says I’m matter-of-fact, funny and strong - the kind of person you can trust to rescue you from your usual daily spiral of pettiness and self-loathing. Like I said: self-preservation. I can remember every detail of the proposal - what he said, or attempted to say; what the light looked like all around and the celebration of food and drink that we enjoyed together in a daze afterwards. The question arose as to whether he had asked my Father’s ‘permission’ to be able to offer me his hand in marriage. He did. My Father accepting such a renouncing of ownership rather frivolously if you ask me. Now, I don’t know about you but this gesture of goodwill sounds rather archaic, but, alas, I’m still waiting for such a loving display of self-mutilation and/or affection - will a high-five do? One of my friends has previously called me up to have an actual melt down because her so-called-friend got engaged as well and was planning to get married in the same year as she was. Apparently it was her special year and not just a day. She threw a huge fit that this girl was only getting married to “steal her thunder”. May I add that there weddings weren’t even being held in the same season never mind the same month. Brides sometimes don’t think rationally and I for one don’t need the excuse of a wedding to be referenced as such. 114 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Don’t even get me started on the altercations of asking friends to be bridesmaids. It opens up a whole can of worms to those friends who haven’t been selected, with a barrage of questions as to why and a level of self-questioning as to why they didn’t make the final cut. Once when I was a bridesmaid I was told to go to the hairdressers to ‘dye my hair’ and the bride would cover the cost. Of course I questioned said outlandish command, the brides response? My hair was quite ‘attention-grabbing’ and wouldn’t fit with the cohesiveness of the group. Okay then. Moving back to the hubby-to-be, I started calling him the bride and this began as a joke between us. My joke. I’ve since realised that I’ve been trying to tell him something that he had yet to hear, which is that I have no intention on performing whatever role the woman is usually forced to perform in this situation. He gets it. It’s something he likes about me (a possible first) and the way I go through life - skepticism, independence in abundance and my ongoing distrust of authority. I think he’s marrying me precisely because I’m not the type of girl who’s super into weddings. I do love cake though...
