EDITOR’S LETTER Women empowerment is by no means how hot or beautiful a woman looks, how many followers a woman has on instagram or even how many friends a woman has on Facebook. Empowerment must be derived from knowledge or education because with knowledge comes power. After all, ‘strong women lift each other up’ and women empowerment is about extending a hand to a fellow woman who needs assistance in elevating herself to the next level, may that be emotionally or even in a professional capacity. The #MeToo movement and the rise of socially conscious millennials who support brands they like have intensified discussions of how women are portrayed in fashion advertisements and has brought out the topic of embracing individuality. This discussion is important and we all need to listen even if we don’t completely agree, as ignorance in this scenario is definitely not bliss - just ignorant. We all need a pick-me-up now and again, and, if that means you taking some ‘me’ time then so be it! Make sure that you schedule this time in for yourself and don’t look at it as something that is flexible and end up encroaching on it with things that feel more important. YOU’RE IMPORTANT! This month we have a stunning lookbook showcasing the supreme liberty that is Cullinan - Rolls-Royce. Confident lines amplify Cullinan’s formidable presence as an iconic silhouette reflects its robust beauty. Showcasing parallels of confidence with individuality is something that we can all take note of. May the auspicious occasion of Eid, bless you with peace and bring joy to your heart and home. Eid Mubarak!

LEGENDARY L ON G E V I T Y

JAYNE GREEN talks to the refreshingly honest MRS LAUDOMIA PUCCI, the daughter of the renowned fashion designer Emilio Pucci, about its Fall Winter 2018-19 collection and the glamorous core of this eponymous brand.

26

www.ohlala-magazine.com

DESIGNER

Y

Focus

our father, Emilio Pucci, is easily one of the most outstanding designers of his time. Do you feel a certain level of pressure to ‘live-up’ to expectations being his daughter? There is always some sort of pressure when you enter a family business, as of course the name you carry is not per se sufficient to assure a successful succession. In my case it’s just been harder because often people think it is all automatic; however, it’s now been 33 years I’ve been working in the brand and I can only feel happy that my father gave me the opportunity of carrying his brand forward. Today Pucci exists thanks to the fact that I have been able to change most of the company, from the ownership (i.e. today LVMH is the major shareholder) onwards, yet keeping a strong sense of continuity with its origins and DNA. Emilio Pucci’s own ties with America – his love for sportswear and a groundbreaking lingerie deal dating back to the Fifties - inspire a glitzy detour across ideas of femininity. The jet set aura and the sporty spirit are mixed and glamorously mingled. How have you ensured that this vision is showcased throughout the design in your Fall Winter 2018-19 collection? The Pucci narrative is very vast and allows the creative team to be curious and experimental with the brand, mixing different moments of its history and of its world. This season it’s the glamour of Hollywood mixed with feminine lingerie, an urban sporty touch and various elements of the brand were carried forward and played around with. I thought it was modern, fresh and very desirable. You have already collaborated with a whole accolade of renowned designers such as Christian Lacroix, Stephan Janson to Peter Dundas. Is there anyone else you would love to collaborate with? I always enjoy working with talents, it can be the print team, the designers, even an artist. I always learn and discover something new. Marilyn Monroe was famously buried in a Pucci dress. What design from the Emilio Pucci brand could you not live without? It’s more than a print for me. It’s a lifestyle concept that I believe is perfect, I live by it, easy to travel in, glamorous, and you can style it as you wish and it always looks right. People are more aware of what they are wearing now-a-days and where their clothing is sourced. Do you follow a particular ethical approach throughout your portfolio? We are very conscious about sustainability and for example we source fabrics, as our jersey, in a sustainable way. We also have had no waste product for many years and buy and re-use leftover fabrics for multiple purposes. I think it’s very important. This idea of jet-set lifestyle continues to play a relevant role in the development of the label. Where do you gain your inspiration for such innovative designs? The brand has clearly too many possibilities and so many ways of looking at it, however lifestyle is key and jet-set for me means happy moments: inspirations from happiness is quite easy. What is your plan for the near future, and where do you hope to take Emilio Pucci in the next five to ten years? I am more and more attracted to young talents and try to work and scout them all over. I would like to prepare a new generation to learn and love this brand, QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS and react to its deep meaning. FAVOURITE SCENT? EN PASSANT – EDITION FREDERIC MALLE Tell us about your biggest challenge that you have FAVOURITE DESIGNER? (OTHER THAN EMILIO PUCCI) NOT SURE, PROBABLY faced with Emilio Pucci and how you have overcome FOR THIS SUMMER, JACQUEMUS such difficulties FAVOURITE FOOD? SALADS, GREEN AND VEGETABLES After more than 30 years in the brand I do not feel like it FAVOURITE BEAUTY PRODUCT? GUERLAIN COSMETICS has been an issue with challenges, but finding solutions. I enjoy innovating the way I relate to the brand. How would you describe someone who wears Emilio Pucci? The Pucci woman is a confident international woman who enjoys travel and life. She has no age; she loves art and colours! She is feminine and has a strong sense of aesthetics. Your designs are very charismatic and unique, with such an artistic flair being present would one find them practical? Yes, one often thinks it is all about prints but this is just a side even if key. The practicality comes from the mix and match, as well as the styling. www.emiliopucci.com everfashion.co

CONFIDENCE

GAINS THE RESULTS ARE IN AFTER WE COMPLETED THE FOUR WEEK CHALLENGE AT DESSANGE AND OUR CLOTHES AREN’T AS SNUG AND WE ARE FEELING LIBERATED. 32

www.ohlala-magazine.com

I’ve always been that girl who weighs themselves

a gazillion times throughout the day - you know, even walking up the stairs or weighing myself after I’ve been to the loo warrants such an action. This is definitely not healthy behaviour so this is one of the areas that I had to work on which my personal trainer Manahel inadvertently did as she educated me on the importance of listening to my body. I stopped weighing myself as this journey isn’t about a number on a scale. It is such much more than that. I’m all about the measurements, because I’m fascinated by how my body has changed during various exercises & I’ve lost 12.5 inches across my body including gains in my booty! Yup, the booty is rocking right now and I’m absolutely loving it. My partner has even commented on my new found confidence and look which is usually somewhat of a ‘pulling blood from a stone’ scenario. It has provided me with that sudden surge and energy to keep going. Most importantly, I feel stronger and more connected to my body than I have in my entire life. Which is key for me right now because I’m dealing with some personal things that would leave me a complete mess, and this program is a huge part of what has kept me grounded and feeling strong in my own body. Without sounding weird I have never felt so much body love in my life. I’m feeling confident, sexy, embracing my curves and never felt more alive in my own skin. The strangest feeling was when Mother Nature did her usual monthly check-in and I found myself actually enjoying exercising as i found it lightened my flow and helped alleviate cramping symptoms. You absolutely need to try Dessange’s spinning class which proved to be an all-over body workout as it is high intensity, but, throw a group of girls into the mix who are all in the same position as you and you cannot help but have fun. The motivating and energetic personal trainers make the transition easier to come back and it is open to non-members also. I mentioned that I’d been having LPG sessions alongside my workouts and this has evidently assisted in defining my curves and everything seems tighter. It definitely looks firmer and I feel more comfortable being in a swimsuit as my cellulite has dramatically decreased! The

technology gently stimulates skin to reactivate dormant cellular activity which sounds all very scientific, but, all you need to know is that it works. With the new patented Alliance treatment head, endermologie® makes it possible to target and slim specific areas resistant to diet and exercise (arms, back, stomach, waist, thighs, etc.) while precisely adapting to the needs of each type of skin. There are a whole host of factors that make us girls want to firm up may it be to down to weight fluctuations, pregnancies, passing time, or indeed other factors, the skin gradually loses its tonicity and suppleness. Even though this skin sagging affects the entire body, certain areas are more susceptible to it: inner thighs, stomach, arms, etc. I’m the #1 bingo wing candidate and I will be using LPG in the future to help tighten this problem area, but, patience is beauty I suppose. Although, you’ll be pleased to know that LPG Endermologie is 100% natural and painless, it provides visible results instantly with 0 side effects. Although your new found confidence should come with a warning... For more information please contact Dessange on 1771 3999 www.ohlala-magazine.com

Al Areen Palace provides a perfectly splendorous setting for their Live Your Life Wellness Center. The impressive ‘fortified’ entrance draws guests and visitors into the luxuriant surroundings which comprise a series of luxury villa style residences, restaurants, bars and the Live Your Life Wellness Center itself. The architecture and décor exemplify traditional Arabian sophistication and opulence with all of the necessary contemporary features and facilities that one would expect. The Live Your Life Wellness Center within the Health Club area of the hotel is a triumph. Its treatment rooms and relaxation areas are firmly part of the experience as they stimulate the senses in the same way in which many of the treatments and programmes do. Granite, marble, tiled columns and palm trees incorporated into the water therapy area along with ostentatious water features and subdued lighting elevate it to a level which is ‘second to none’ in Bahrain. As I slipped on my silky robe and prepared for my treatments to begin I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and relaxation simply from the ambience of the surroundings and its location. On arrival I was invited to partake in the thirstquenching Butterfly Pea Tea which is beneficial to so many of the bodies functions and can actually counter the symptoms of many common conditions. It is an antioxidant which also reduces inflammation and pain. It’s anti-asthmatic properties will appeal to those with respiratory issues and its ability to regulate blood sugar levels is valuable to those with

diabetic issues. This holistic approach runs throughout the ethos of the Live Your Life Wellness Center. Holistic therapy, detox and preventative programs are used in conjunction with state-of-the-art beauty treatments and fitness programs to sculpt mind and body whilst inducing a sense of wellness inside and out. The Hydrafacial treatment is a non- invasive treatment which is designed to tackle the familiar signs of ageing, particularly fine lines, whilst replenishing the anti-ageing properties of the skin. This is a very unique technique where the skin is cleansed and then gentle suction is applied to remove impurities and stimulate blood flow. Due to the fact that the tiny vacuum head produces such a relaxing sensation you feel the benefits of both an invigorating ‘deep clean’ treatment and a luxuriant facial massage. Hyaluronic Acid alongside substances such as collagen and elastin maintain the form and vitality of your complexion. The facial is concluded by the application of Hyaluronic Acid which is slowly absorbed by the skin and ideally should be left to fully permeate overnight following the treatment. The effect was a blissful dewy glow which stayed with me for several days following the Hydrafacial Treatment. The Velashape and Pressotherapy treatments are a prime example of their continuous holistic regime. Velashape is fundamentally an anti-cellulite treatment which contours the body and reduces fat. The combination of Bi-Polar Radio Frequency, infrared light, vacuum and mechanical manipulation improve circulation, increase the metabolism and break down fatty tissues. The process is similar to that of the Hydra facial using suction and rollers which invigorate whilst smoothing and providing a dimple-free finish. Despite being quite a gentle process it provides the same benefits as a deep tissue massage. I was slightly sceptical about whether or not I would see any noticeable benefits but on closer inspection the difference in texture and appearance was marked. Finally I was introduced to the remarkable Pressotherapy Suit. It is renowned for its ability to generate effective lymphatic drainage and therefore it is of both medical and cosmetic value. The expulsion of the body’s natural toxins and improved skin oxygenation enhance skin tone and general appearance. In addition scar tissue and crystallisation which can be a side effect of invasive procedures can also be broken down through the use of Pressotherapy. It’s genuinely very difficult for me to liken this to any other retreat experiences I have had as it proved itself as truly unique. The Hammam Garden is the antithesis of serenity and luxury and meandering through the Live Your Life Wellness Center is just as much a part of your regimen as the therapies themselves. You will feel an overwhelming sense of well being and contentment upon departure. For more information please call +973 17845000 @alareenpalaceandspa

BEAT THE HEAT As the temperatures start to rise, Angela Beitz explains how to keep your beauty regime in check this summer

I

t’s scorching out there! The summer months are suddenly upon us and has brought with it a wave of sticky skin, dry hair and a parched face. Make-up is starting to melt off and you just can’t seem to keep up with the H20. We are all well aware of how attractive tanned skin is but the hard truth is that spending time out in the sun can be very harmful, so it’s best to look after your hair, skin and face. Here’s how...

SLATHER ON THE SUNSCREEN

Using a high SPF factor is crucial here in The Gulf. SPF doesn’t refer to the strength of your protection it refers to the time. So, if you’re using SPF 10, you will get 10 times the amount of time in the sun it would usually take for you to burn. If you use SPF 40, you will get 40 times. If you are sweating a lot or doing a lot of swimming, you need to constantly reapply. SPF 30 should be used at an absolute minimum and I would strongly recommend SPF 50 and even SPF 100 if you are very fair and it’s great to use on your face. Remember: SPF is the cheapest and most effective anti-ageing product on the market! 44

CHANGE UP YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Sunscreen and beauty products have come a long way over the years and it’s great to see a lot of foundations along with CC & BB creams that now have SPF. In saying this, these products aren’t high enough in SPF for a day outside or by the beach or pool. Save them for office days when you won’t be outside in the sun as they don’t have the same long-lasting effects that sunscreen does. Opt for a lighter foundation with a loose setting powder and in these months - less is more! Keep it simple.

COOL DOWN WITH A MIST

Stash a bottle of face mist in your handbag so that you can mist your face and body when you’re at work or at the beach. your skin will thank you for it. There are loads of inexpensive options on the market packed with antioxidants and nutrients that will soothe and hydrate skin on top of cooling you down. They are also a great product to use here year-round to hydrate your skin from the dehydrating A/C and harsh environment.

REPAIR THE DAMAGE

If the worst should happen and you do get sunburnt you need to get as many antioxidants into your skin as quickly as possible. Products with Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Aloe Vera, Green Tea will help to stop the free radicals that have harmed your skin and help to prevent premature ageing. Avoid any more contact with the sun after you have been burnt and ensure you wear shirts that cover your shoulders and chest.

FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT

The best thing you can do is to stay out of the sun and save yourself the drama and get a spray-tan. The nice bronze, glowy type that looks natural or buy a good home-tanning product from Sephora or the pharmacy that has hydrating properties and is good for your skin also. This will save your skin the damage while still looking healthy and tanned.

DECO

ABSURDIST The inspiration for Julianna Bass’s AW18 collection is centered around the positive nature/forces of absurdity. Not simply directly in relation to political climates or battles against inequality, but within ourselves and through our relationships with others. It is about stepping out of bounds and challenging the status quo. Being true to exactly who oneself is, saying it out loud, and without apology... owning the vibrancy that comes with the freedom of being vulnerable... and fighting absurdity with absurdity. The vibrant colour infused throughout this Autumn/Winter collection is a departure from the designer’s usual trajectory. The primary print of the collection is notable for its bold deco geometry that communicates both feminine strength and whimsical delight. Once again, for this collection, Julianna collaborated with Berlin based artist, Peer Kriesel, to develop a custom print. The humanist, illustrative quality of the secondary print in strong juxtaposition to the geometry of the primary comes together to create a subtle statement of joyous absurdity. Where we find absurdity we find humour and where we find humour we find strength. @juliannabass

PALATIAL PERFECTION A range of vibrant cultural experiences, recreational and rejuvenation activities amidst the natural splendour of a tranquil, tropical retreat was just the ticket we needed. This, alongside World-class five-star services allowed for a magical stay at Shangri-La Al Husn Resort and Spa, Muscat.

“The lobby both

The provenance and history of the Shangri-La group is particularly apt when taking in the splendorous setting on your drive from the airport to the Resort. The mythical place described by James Hilton in his novel Lost Horizon inspired Robert Kuok to name his ’new’ hotel after it. The vast rock formations, outcrops and chards which surround the resort are breathtaking and certainly have an element of the mythical, if not magical , about them. A great deal of thought and time has been taken when choosing a setting in which to create this resort. My experience did not begin as I approached the resort but rather days earlier when I received my personalised itinerary. It not only whet my appetite for my stay but made me feel that my individual needs were being addressed and that each element was bespoke and thoughtfully arranged. The lobby area is an absolute triumph of both architecture and taste. It perfectly combines vastness and luxury and was reminiscent of the serene open spaces found within Grand Mosques all over area is an absolute triumph of the Middle East. Much of the ‘need to know’ architecture and taste.” information had already been dispensed through my itinerary prior to arrival so I was able to gaze , in awe, as I was shown around the resort discovering a succession of beautiful spaces, courtyards and vistas. Shangri La Al Husn is Oman’s only private , adult resort and has recently been refined in order to ensure that guests can indulge in all aspects of the finest of Omani hospitality. The views from the infinity pool and the private Mahhara Beach would rival those of Santorini at sunset. The sense of seclusion and tranquillity which the setting imparts is second to none. The phrase ‘breakfast at your leisure’ illustrates the overriding philosophy of the Al Husn resort which is to induce a sense of relaxation and revitalisation. The Sultanah restaurant plays host to breakfast each morning. A riot of colour, flavour and choice greeted us. The vast platters and service stations afford guests the opportunity to eat as healthily or indulgently as their mood desires. The décor is inspired by the rock and water outside and is a fusion of colour and light which exudes freshness. Throughout my travels and gastronomic experiences I would struggle to place another resort’s ‘iftar’ above it. To coin a phrase I had certainly breakfasted like a king or rather Sultan - though I doubted that dinner would be that of a pauper!

TRAVEL Escapes magnificence. In addition to traditional Moroccan tagines, meat and seafood dishes the restaurant also presents diners with the finest Lebanese grills and Omani specialities. Most would consider taste to be the sense most used when sitting down to dinner however, scientists increasingly believe that sight is vastly more important and the setting in which food is enjoyed can itself actually enhance the flavour. Clearly those behind this restaurant concept had heard about this. Shahrazad’s intricate styling and menu choices will delight and satiate diners whilst exhibiting the flawless standards which permeate every area at the Shangri La. So many second days staying in beautiful hotels begin with first day breakfasts - but not here. Each day saw us embarking on a new route to ‘flavourtown’ with incredible dishes along the way. I could find no fault with preparation, quality, variety or service. Stunning. A fitting precursor for our Spa experience. Hareer (meaning silk in Arabic) is the first L’Occitane Spa in Oman and was designed to deliver a Mediterranean experience. The natural tones and shades of lavender are evocative of the colours of Provence where oil infusions were first sold in local markets in the late 1970s and the iconic brand L’Occitane was founded. The oils and treatments combine phyto-therapy and aromatherapy in a luxurious and authentic way. At the time we were the first couple to enjoy the Omani Honey Heaven Treatment together. L’Occitane worked with Hareer Spa to create a bespoke product which is built around the properties of Omani honey. The softening scrub smoothed and soothed the skin and prepared us for the deep relaxing massage with oils further infused with Omani honey. The treatment was a journey of wellbeing leading to a sense of contentment and pure relaxation. The resort is also able to offer guests full use of neighbouring Shangri-La resorts where you may choose to dine or partake of water sports, additional spa facilities and a vast beach. The plat de resistance at the neighbouring Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa resort is the opportunity to “During our stay we were fortunate enough to witness one experience their Turtle Care Project. atema Al Bastaki is the Co-Brand Manager of Imtiaz for Her; a credit card exclusively created for women. She has proven herself as a capable, creative, team-oriented individual with a positive outlook on life and a strong desire to leave a mark in the Public Relations industry. Her passion in media and involvement with Bahrain TV as both an editor and presenter formed recognisable interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with individuals at all levels. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am Fatema Bastaki, a 27 year old mother of a beautiful girl and the CoBrand Manager of Imtiaz for Her, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s first and only credit card for ladies. I am also a holder of a bachelor of Banking and Finance from the prestigious University of Bangor in Wales, as the financial industry has always been an industry I am passionate about, especially when it comes to increasing the role of women in the financial sector, which comes apparent in Imtiaz for Her. What were you most excited about with the WPS? The Women Power Summit was a unique event within the MENA, as it was the largest summit for women within the region with an astounding number of 900 attendees and 113 speakers, many of them being international and regional speakers who flew in to be a part of history. I was thrilled to be an integral part of the summit as it was powered by Imtiaz for Her, the energy we were surrounded by as the speakers and attendees spoke and exchanged brilliant ideas was absolutely wonderful! What do you think this WPS represented? It represented women empowerment in its full meaning; women can and will achieve even when they are told they can’t, and they will come under one roof to share those achievements and inspire the younger generations to push the limits and challenge stereotypes. What do you hope will come out of the summit in terms of actions and takeaway messages for the participants? There were many outcomes to the summit’s sessions and workshops, the attendees and the speakers had a chance to exchange ideas, conversate, and share experiences for two full days, as well as engaging in practical workshops. The workshops included seminars on mentorship, getting ready for job interviews, being appropriately dressed for boardrooms, diversity in the workplace, amongst many more topics. The summit also hosted the largest speed networking event, as over 100 participants attended an event where they connected, exchanged business cards, and got to know each other and enlarge their connection circle of professional successful women! The buzz word surrounding the conference is “movement” - how do you see yourself engaging with the movement of Women Leaders in the Middle East? I believe it is time for us women to take the lead and challenge the stereotypes built for us growing up, this summit is the perfect platform for that. It sends a message to the world that as Middle Eastern women, we are capable of accomplishing incredible things, and our voices are loud and clear. What role do you think the media plays, or can play, specifically in promoting gender equality? Media is an important and integral tool in influencing the world. As women, especially as women in managerial positions, we can use that tool to shed light on successful women and their stories; through

the exchange of journeys and ideas, come great results, and comes a generation of younger women who are empowered with through these ideas. The media is also responsible for promoting the idea of mentors, of women supporting women and being allies in the workplace and throughout their careers. Do you think from a global media perspective there’s anything that can be changed to further promote gender equality, or do you think that there doesn’t need to be any major change? – no comment The global media is responsible of shattering many stereotypes and myths that it built in previous decades, it is responsible for shattering the idea that women are competitors of other women rather than spreading the idea that women should support one another, through spreading the idea, we can fully empower women to support one another to rise up and work against gender inequality. Additionally, the media is responsible for spreading awareness about gender inequality, whether it’s international statistics, challenges, or ways to work together in order to overcome the pay gap and gender inequality in the workplace. What is the main thing that you’ve taken from the WPS yourself ? Connections with incredible accomplished women and men, unlimited knowledge, and most importantly, a platform to speak up. Tell us about any future plans to continue WPS. As a working woman and mother, I want to continuously be a part of the summit to maintain the impact it had to young girls around the Kingdom of Bahrain and the region, and I want my daughter to grow up with the speakers in the summits to look up to. As a Co-Brand Manager for Imtiaz for Her, the brand will continue to support the summit for two upcoming rounds, and we aspire for larger and more impactful summits within the future. @imtiazforher

afa Alobaidat is the Chief Executive Officer and Creative Director of Obai and Hill who provide their clientele with the competitive edge needed in the current marketplace. This is a woman who really does it all as her expertise includes community building, business management, communication skills, concept creation, managing teams, and business development, amidst writing a variety of contributions for startups and entrepreneurship with a whole host of other impressive accolades.

“One of the proudest moments for me was when Obai and Hill received the ‘Startup of the Year’ award. Each year I push myself to take on a new challenge, last year it was successfully finishing the Iron Man 70.3 triathlon and this year it has been the Women Power Summit.” Tell us a little bit about yourself. My journey into entrepreneurship began when I was in London, after graduating from the University of the Arts in London as a Chelsea College of Art and Design. That is when I created an online platform that came to be known as the Sketchbook Magazine. It was a phenomenal experience that motivated me to elevate it to a new standard. Given my clientele at the time, I strategically moved back to the Middle East region - back home to our island of Bahrain. It wasn’t always easy. The journey has been challenging but very empowering and filled with life lessons that molded me into the person I am today. My biggest challenge initially was something as simple as registering my company way back in 2010. It seems like a long time since then and now to becoming the CEO of one of the fastest growing PR agencies in the MENA region. One of the proudest moments for me was when Obai and Hill received the ‘Startup of the Year’ award. Each year I push myself to take on a new challenge, last year it was successfully finishing the Iron Man 70.3 triathlon and this year it has been the Women Power Summit. They have each been such great experiences and I’ve learnt so much from the amazing personalities whom I have come across as they encouraged me to shatter glass ceilings. What were you most excited about with the WPS? I believe that most exciting thing was to finally turn the dream into a reality with WPS. Gathering women from diverse backgrounds, amazing shared experiences, inspirational stories of wins and losses all under one roof, to showcase that no matter where you are or what you are going through, you can still overcome so much as an individual and as a support team especially through mentorship. Most importantly I was excited to be able to build something with my team that gave women a platform to have a true voice and to 64

really make an impact on the lives of as many people they come in contact with. What do you think this WPS represented? This summit represented how far we have come as a nation while also representing how much farther we have to go to gain true representation and optimize the productivity and contribution of each citizen. We have so many amazing Bahraini women who have built their careers from scratch and have turned their lives around by creating empires for generations to lead. To have regional and international speakers come in and share their experiences allowed a platform to shatter workplace myths, discuss the crux of gender representation and equality and come together with solutions but more importantly initiate a conversation in the first place!w What do you hope will come out of the summit in terms of actions and takeaway messages for the participants? Many of the participants were able to give a voice to their stories – their experiences. This in turn led to influencing all women to connect with more than one speaker that gave them access to a wealth of wisdom. Through this I believe women began to understand the importance of mentorship, of supporting one another in the workspace, fostering healthy relationships and healthier frames of mind, of pursuing your interests with enthusiasm and vigour. It definitely has been a catalyst of much more to come and with the next summit we seek to maintain this momentum to turn it into actionable goals. The buzzword surrounding the conference is “movement” - how do you see yourself engaging with the movement of Women Leaders in the Middle East? Our mothers, grandmothers and ancestors would be so proud of where we stand today. The fact that I am able to openly have this discussion with you and engage in healthy debate with decision makers shows that times are changing and it’s upon each of us to lead that change with confidence. I am very grateful to all the speakers and attendees who took the time to shed light on the next phase for women in the business world and give them the motivation to strive for the best and stand up for

I am very grateful to all the speakers and attendees who took the time to shed light on the next phase for women in the business world and give them the motivation to strive for the best and stand up for themselves even if no one else stands up for you.

themselves even if no one else stands up for you. One of the speakers Dr. Sara Al Reefy shared how she was barred from going to work and that she had to jump from the window of her house because she knew deep down that her priority was to save lives and her fulfilling her careers’ responsibilities mattered to people beside herself. “Movement” indicates change and we’re all change agents then each day as an Editor, as a CEO, as an individual fulfilling his/ her responsibility to one’s career and to the society. You and I – we’re engaging the movement of women leaders globally everyday when we stand tall with our convictions and empower the people around us. What role do you think the media plays, or can play, specifically in promoting gender equality? Media is a very powerful tool that can be used to reach out to spread awareness to highlight the achievements of women to inspire others. Simply seeing more women on TV screens alongside men more than what we are used to, that is creating a balance between genders no longer unusual, especially in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The media has always been the biggest influence to touch the viewers’ mindsets and sentiments. It adds a visual element to a foreseeable future that we’re paving acceptance for. Do you think from a global media perspective there’s anything that can be changed to further promote gender equality, or do you think that there doesn’t need to be any major change? The WPS summit ensured that the media could be used in positive way to uncover key information and educate readers/viewers. You can’t clap with one hand; put them together and we get a bang. The global media needs to be sensitive and aware of their responsibility in this global conversation. We shouldn’t overlook the fact that male leaders mainly controlled media but here we are now empowering women to be welcomed into the fold and own the space. We see women as ministers, doctors and engineers and media is the fastest way of communication to address so many people to eliminate doubt and inspire change. What is the main thing that you’ve taken from the WPS yourself ? Nothing is hard everything is possible, if you just hold on and power through with the support of strong dedicated team. WPS started as a dream but we managed to turn that dream into a reality, I realized that there is not limit for us women in learning and building our network, we should never put ourselves down but we should embrace it and be proud of being women. My team has inspired me tremendously with their dedication, hard work and the sacrifices they have made alongside me to take ownership of this summit as much as I was invested in it. The attendees and the speakers inspired and motivated me with their enthusiasm to share, to learn, to teach and to support across the board. Tell us about any future plans to continue WPS. That’s actually a good question; I believe that for us to be able to take the WPS concept and experience even further – we need to involve both genders, as speakers and participants, in order to engage in healthy constructive debate to close the gap between both men and women and strive for the vision to have an equal and balanced environment for the upcoming years for all. wafaalobaidat.com obaiandhill.com www.ohlala-magazine.com

r.Ameera Al Mosali is a highly experienced expert in dentistry considering her many years of experience since graduation. Dr.Ameera is a highly trained consultant orthodontist with membership in orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. She gained years of knowledge and experience that helped her eventually start her own business, The Dental Club. Dr.Ameera was one one of the speakers at the Women Power Summit As a female entrepreneur, tell us about your business and what inspired you start your own business, The Dental Club? I always believe in dreaming big and that motivated me to take certain leaps of faith despite the fear of failure. I left my convenient stable career at the Ministry of Health. I wanted to reach out to as many people as I could and contribute to society and give back as much as possible. For me it has always been much more than a career. I wanted to establish a business model that cared for people and made these services accessible and affordable to them while sharing in a very different experience. It was challenging not being from a business background but I have a supportive family that joined me on this journey of self-education and growth and it has truly been a learning experience – each struggle and each win. Dental Club isn’t like every other dental clinic. It is your friendly neighbourhood dental clinic but with the ambience of a spa and relaxing lounge. We focus on the customer experience from the minute they book their appointment, to their visit and consultation, their procedure and the ease of their payment process. No child leaves empty handed as we believe in it needing to be a rewarding experience and to eliminate all phobias of visiting the dentist for a check-up. Our clients feel at ease with us because of the comfort and care with which our doctors treat them. We are proud to be a Bahraini dental clinic with some of the finest facilities for dental aesthetic procedures especially. We have visiting doctors from the region and I myself also consult in Abu Dhabi on a monthly basis. 66

What advice do you have for other women entrepreneurs who are looking to start a business or continue to grow their business? Seize every opportunity you receive and don’t give up even when the going gets tough. This has been a beautifully rewarding career as I directly get to impact people’s lives and make a difference and the same works with any entrepreneurial venture – it is bigger than you. Always remember the responsibility you have and feel proud of all that you are doing to achieve it. I wish each and every one of them all the success and strength. Always be sure to invest in great counsel be it from friends, family or even leaders in a space you want to grow within. Ask for advice, seek to learn more and maintain confidence in your capabilities. As they say – be a go-getter, a hustler, a change bringer! Do you think that women’s positioning in business is fair? Or do we still have a way to go? On a personal level, I was unsure when I started out on the career path I wanted to adopt. Back in the day, the options were limited, stereotypes were prevalent, and society wasn’t as supportive of women occupying certain roles/ careers as those were considered to be roles for men alone. I have the good fortune of a supportive family who push me to achieve more even when it seems near impossible to turn things around. From someone who has no entrepreneurial background – I established Dental Club with a specific vision and dream in mind and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing happy families walk out the door, and that motivates me to help more. However in terms of challenges as a woman, it is difficult for acceptance from society of a woman being able to be career driven and yet dedicate time towards family and the upbringing of your children. It is also sometimes challenging for people to take you seriously in the line of business. Although with that said I have always been a determined person, self-aware and focused on shifting people’s paradigms to be more supportive and understanding of the vision I have and that is the most important rule – never give up and never let negative perceptions demotivate you if you believe in something. The buzz word surrounding the conference is “movement” - how do you see yourself engaging with the movement of Women Leaders in the Middle East? The Women Power Summit is a tremendously empowering platform and I am honoured that I was chosen to be one of the Speakers. It is important for us as a nation and for women as a community to come together to support one another, discuss each other’s wins and challenges and work towards achievements that we can be proud of without restricting ourselves from growing within our professions. My intention through participation in this summit was to connect with likeminded individuals and to encourage and enlighten the young minds of the country on the responsibilities that they have towards paving the way for tremendous economic prosperity and the health and happiness of the nation. They are the dream team of happiness. The beauty of dentistry is that we get to take away pain and reward people with beautiful smiles, which build confidence and a positive body language. This summit wasn’t about discouraging our male counterparts – it was instead a voice of encouragement to women to be ambitious, to work hard and own their space. That to me is such an important MOVEMENT for our small yet powerful island to undertake under the guidance of women like Her Highness Shaikha Hessa bint Khalifa AlKhalifa, Wafa Alobaidat and the other inspirational women associated with this summit. In today’s world, with information so easily accessible and parents investing in education, no child must feel that they can’t become a doctor in whichever specialised field because of their gender. Gender representation is important and we as a community must be responsible towards generating enough opportunities for capable individuals to flourish within them.

During her 5 years as CEO and co-founder of T Dispatch, a software startup for transportation/ fleet management, she raised over €2 million funding and acquired an international client base. She currently heads up the IoT Program at Brinc and was one of the speakers at the WPS. As a female entrepreneur tell us about your businesses and what inspires you as a startup enthusiast? I was CEO and co-founder of T Dispatch - a cloud-software for transportation/fleet management. I realised that my background in Business and Communications perfectly balanced the tech and product skills of my co-founders. I took on marketing and PR, business development, management, investor relations…anywhere I could use my interpersonal skills. One of the things I love is the variety of startup life. No two days are the same and the speed of learning is unparalleled. The energy and resilience of startup founders inspires me - it’s contagious! Who is your strong woman role model, that provides you guidance to where you are today? Easy - my mother. She runs her own business in Management and Leadership training, has written several books and when faced with unfair publishing deals, she founded her own publishing company which now supports first-time authors. She has always been so supportive, and I’ve been lucky enough to inherit her communication skills through osmosis. What advice do you have for other women entrepreneurs who are looking to start a business or continue to grow their business? Do your homework. Find a real-life problem to solve in an underserved market. Surround yourself with positive, supportive individuals, be open to constructive feedback and always assume there is more to learn. What is the highlight success in your career that is significant to excellence in business? I was so proud to get seed investment ($90,000) from my first ever pitch in front of a live audience. My years of singing on stage really paid off! Also, being a featured contributor in the book ‘Dear Female Founder’ was a great moment for me. Do you think that women’s positioning in business is fair? Or do we still have a way to go? We still have a long way to go! Until there is no such thing as a gender pay gap, no more need for quotas and 50/50 representation at board level, we must keep pushing for equality. Women need more role models in visible, senior positions and “bro culture” has to stop. Many men think that because they never personally mistreated a female colleague that the issue is blown out of proportion, but one look at the statistics shows otherwise. It’s important that women who have not personally experienced sexism support the women who have. However, none of this is an excuse not to excel; overcoming these obstacles is what makes business women so badass! The buzz word surrounding the conference is “movement” - how do you see yourself engaging with the movement of Women Leaders in the Middle East? I volunteer for as many events and bootcamps as possible to share my knowledge, which results in great networking opportunities. I’m impressed at the amount of women in the startup ecosystem in Bahrain; I hope I can help promote tech innovations in the region, inspiring more female founders to start IoT businesses!

M

ara Mostafa is half English/Arab and has been in the realm of social media for over 20 years. Having started very young, she has worked in design and different sectors of the industry. Based between Bahrain, UAE and London, she has her company where does events, marketing, PR and is a modest fashion consultant and curator.

There has been a sudden growth of popularity surrounding modest fashion which is linked to the rise in the use of social media - especially instagram. How do you utilise your influence to advocate for women? I use my platform to promote modest fashion and advocate for women who want to dress modestly whether they wear the hijab or not. My aim is to show that you do not need to compromise your values/faith when it comes to fashion and that the two can work side by side. Tell us how you first delved into the world of social media and why you feel it is important? I started out almost 8 years ago with a blog before all the snapchats and instagrams. The thing was to have a blog where you shared your interests and that was your platform. I maintained that for about 4 years where then Instagram popped on the scene and everything became even more instant. The blog slowed down with the rise of instagram.. It was easier to post interests there, captioned with reviews and short write-ups and get instant responses. Ever since then my main portal and platform is instagram. I do what I do as I never had anyone growing up that I could look at and relate it when it came to fashion, magazines, style etc. I know how hard it can be working in the industry for so many years for women who dress modestly to be motivated and find modest solutions in a world that is all about baring all. Not everyone has that ‘nack’ of putting things together and styling. I have a daughter and want her to have someone to look up to when it comes to fashion and style but still sticks to their values and felt that I needed to be that person for her and for the generation of modest dressers and for those who want to start to dress modestly. Instagram allowed me to take that stand and be that person. We love individuality and empowering other women, therefore, how do you challenge the perception that social media is a ‘distorted’ reality thus breeding unattainable goals? Social media can definitely distort reality. It is one of the negatives but there’s a lot of positives to it too. Scrolling through your feed and look at all the polished images and unattainable high end fashion one could then start comparing it to themselves for those who have low self esteem. But I don’t think that’s excluded to social media as it’s the same with magazines, reality tv and so on. However, at least with our own social media platforms we can emphasize that this isn’t reality and also show as little or a lot of our own lives to make us more human and relatable. At the end of the day were there to inspire and be more relatable . 68

What pearls of wisdom do you have for someone who is wanting to become a social blogger/influencer? It’s a lot of work that most of the time costs you your own time and money. It’s not easy to get into as with the current constant change in algorithms with instagram makes it very difficult to get seen and noticed unless you have a certain number of followers, likes, comments etc. Make sure you find your niche and go expand on that. Having skills in content creation, editing, photoshop, photography are all requirements now. Collaborate collaborate collaborate, the more you work with other bloggers/influencers/ photographers/brands the more the reach and exposure you will get which will help you create a following and attraction. The buzz word surrounding the conference is “movement” - how do you see yourself engaging with the movement of Women Leaders in the Middle East? Modest fashion is a multi billion dollar industry that has only just started booming. The movement is rolling and heading in the right direction and is going to be around for a long time. Having been in the industry for as long as I have, it’s amazing to see the shift and knowing that somehow I contributed to that in whatever small way. I see myself expanding in modest fashion consulting and assisting brands in their direction. This year I worked alongside the Dubai Modest Fashion Week that took place in January, which was a huge international event. I see myself more involved in events like those and as a mentor to help guide the young and upcoming modest fashion designers. @maradxb

ulin Sahin is a British-Turkish Modest Fashion/Beauty blogger and Makeup Artist in Bahrain. Her background is in fashion having graduated from the University of Arts London and worked in the industry for 9 years. She later studied the art of makeup application and incorporates both beauty and fashion in her work. There has been a sudden growth of popularity surrounding modest fashion which is linked to the rise in the use of social media - especially instagram. How do you utilise your influence to advocate for women? I think it all comes down to being genuine and real. Everyone has their own character and personality and this is most definitely relayed on every single post. My own personal style comes out each time I share something. I’ve always had a feminine style and modest fashion is the ultimate freedom of expression and femininity for me. It is a very powerful way of showing that I have the right to wear what I wear and being proud of that fact. I want those women who are considering dressing modestly to see that there is no one style fits all - because there isn’t. The spectrum of modest dressing is so wide, it encompasses an array of cultures and history. Tell us how you first delved into the world of social media and why you feel it is important? As a fashion graduate and someone who’s always been into makeup and beauty from an early age I would always help friends and family to pick

out their outfits for special events or long summer holidays etc. I have quite a photographic memory so I tend to effortlessly memorise certain pieces in certain stores. This would help when people would ask me where the perfect black heels were or where that perfect full sleeved shirt housed. This to me was very important as I could see how much I helped these women by saving them so much stress and time during their shopping trips. Eventually, instead of talking about it I thought I’d start a blog, this eventually spread out onto Instagram, Twitter and other social media platform. We love individuality and empowering other women, therefore, how do you challenge the perception that social media is a ‘distorted’ reality thus breeding unattainable goals? All women are beautiful and sometimes this form of beauty does not always have to be put out on display. The pressure for women these days unfortunately can make women feel constantly inadequate or not pretty enough which is simply ridiculous. Modesty gives you back that power to actually choose what you show or don’t show. The level of empowerment you feel is indescribable. Another point is that social media is not always real and as glamorous as it seems. Scrolling through someone’s feed with the perfect holiday destination in every shot or the perfect outfit does not mean that they live their life like that every single day. I would say that for some the Instagram feed has evolved from a misspelt Starbucks paper cup to a Vogue style editorial magazine - with the recent addition of Instastories showing more dimensions of influencers including any vulnerability and I guess more of their lives. What pearls of wisdom do you have for someone who is wanting to become a social blogger/influencer? First of all I would say think about what message you want to put out there. Is it luxury fashion,or affordable fashion? Do you want to show your individuality through something as simple as the abaya? I would always state the importance of being consistent, invest in a good camera or smartphone. Try to get inspiration from other influencers but always aim to stay unique. The buzz word surrounding the conference is “movement” - how do you see yourself engaging with the movement of Women Leaders in the Middle East? Female entrepreneurs have a huge platform in the Middle East. I believe that with tailored collaborations and seeking the underdog a lot of good things will come out. The constant algorithm changes that Instagram seems to be a particular fan of makes it very difficult for those who do not have huge number followers to be noticed. I would like to see more female leaders reach out to them and assist in their progression and movement. @trestouline www.ohlala-magazine.com

THE FAIREST OF THE MALL Ohlala talks to acclaimed Celebrity Colourist, George Papanikolas, a regular guest colourist at Purple Patchouli Salon and Spa alongside spotlighting their other international specialists.

PURPLE PATCHOULI SALON AND SPA SITUATED IN AL AALI MALL, BAHRAIN HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO CREATING THE ULTIMATE BESPOKE EXPERIENCE FOR CLIENTS FOR THE PAST 9 YEARS. WITH NATURALLY SOURCED PRODUCTS, CUSTOMIZED TREATMENTS, INTERNATIONAL SPECIALISTS AND AN EYE FOR LUXURY, EVERY TRIP TO PURPLE PATCHOULI IS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE. CLIENTS CAN COME IN TO REVITALIZE THEIR MIND, BODY AND SOUL OR CREATE A NEW LOOK.

As one of the hottest and most sought-after colourists in Hollywood and now the world, George Papanikolas - Matrix Celebrity Colourist, is recognised as one of the U.S.’s top Colourists and travels across the U.S. teaching his magical balayage techniques. He has worked with many of Hollywood ‘it’ girls-including - Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, Madonna, Britney Spears, Hailey Baldwin, Shay Mitchell, Paris Jackson, Nicole Richie, Miranda Kerr, Sara Michelle Gellar, Jenna Dewan Tatum, and that’s just to name a few... When did you realise that hair was your passion and how did it develop into your career? How did you get into this industry? I always had a passion for doing hair. My mother wanted me to go to hair school when I was a teenager but I was afraid of getting picked on so I didn’t do it. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20s and having met a lot of celebrity hairdressers that I realized you could make a career out of this. Everything took off really quickly for me despite having to do a lot of work to get to where I’m at, but, it has always been really fun and when you love what you do it doesn’t feel like work. What’s the easiest way for Ohlala readers to take their hair from a day in the office to happy hour and still look great? Taking into consideration the humidity we face in the Kingdom of Bahrain… Playing with texture is the best way to play with your look and take it from day to night. Tying it up into a loose chignon during the day allows you to naturally get loose waves when you take it down at night. Which hair product should every lady covet? Moisture is key for healthy hair. Natural oils are probably my favourite way to hydrate the hair the night before you wash it, such as matrix biolage raw oil. What is your #1 hair care tip? Keeping your highlights within four shades of your natural hair colour. This keeps the hair at its best condition and is the most flattering on your skin. Going any lighter or darker than four shades can be harsh and can compromise the integrity of your hair. Tell us what you love about Bahrain and Purple Patchouli. The thing I love about Bahrain and Purple Patchouli is that the girls really make me feel like family. They have a great attention to fashion and style and are adventurous with their looks. 70

CULINARY

SYMPHONY

Saturday afternoon’s are host to the almighty Dim Sum Brunch at re/Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck. Never failing to impress with their signature dishes expertly curated amidst the latest seasonal offerings - why would you honestly go anywhere else? I defy anyone to arrive at the Four Seasons Bahrain Bay and not be utterly entranced. Unequivocally the most awe inspiring, voguish structure both by day and night. It sits regally upon its own isle. Needless to say that filling this majestic hotel with suitably chic dining experiences was a walk in the park for renowned Chef Wolfgang Puck. Puck’s first dalliance into the world of fusion was in Santa Monica where he opened Chinois. This was culinary bravery which was then unsurpassed. French classical elegance and sophistication meets umami. The Re: branding has sought to replicate and better this. When walking into re/Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck the art deco inspired dining room feels like a chic post-colonial café in Hanoi or Colombo with perhaps just a spattering of contemporary elegance. Executive Chef Brian Becher, Executive Sous Chef Josh Wetshtein and Executive Pastry Chef Pierre Chambon all employ the very best of local produce and ingredients to create a one of a kind culinary journey. The Dim Sum Brunch introduces diners to the skillfully crafted selection of Asian bonne bouche without feeling overwhelmed by overflowing platters and countless stations. The brunch showcases the way in which the team employ top notch ingredients and extant technique to produce a variety of steamed buns, pan fried oriental classics and noodle dishes. Potstickers, spring rolls and dumplings are all familiar staples on Asian menus. This is until they are given the ‘Re:’ treatment. Exquisitely lavish ingredients including Wagyu Beef , Lobster and Black Tiger Prawns elevate the dishes to new gastronomic levels. Bespoke dipping sauces and drizzles accompany eat dish and subtly tantalise the palate further. It would be easy to venture no further down the menu than the Homemade Dumpling section but I found myself drawn to the freshly prepared, more substantial dishes. The grilled skewers take the culinary tourists to southern Asia with their tikka seasoning and tamarind infused date puree. The whole red mullet topped with crispy shallots is brought to life by the thai chilli sauce whipped up, as with everything else prepared in-house. The Korean Bao Buns are another fine example of re-

inventing the familiar as they are furnished with Radish Kimchi and a hint of the Mediterranean with an inventive aioli. The Crispy Squid and Venus Clams . Turnip Cakes and Tempura Green Beans should also feature in your ‘travels’. The wok is synonymous with Asian cuisine and when cold oil is added to a hot wok the ingredients are cooked instantaneously and the freshness of the flavours are sealed in. It also creates a special aroma which is known as the ‘breath of the wok’ and re/Asian Cuisine provides an opportunity to experience this during the brunch with both fried rice and noodle dishes. My particular favourite involved a ‘runny’ egg which could be shredded, glazing the rice and offsetting the heat of the kimchi. You then simply need to decide whether or not to choose Hong Kong or Shanghai for your stir fried noodles that is unless you are incredibly brave and tackle the ‘crazy noodles’. The décor is not the only aspect of the restaurant where a French influence is evident. The farming culture providing Chefs with bounteous wheat and corn harvests and luxuriant creams and butter combined with sun ripened berries has nurtured the development of decadent desserts and delicate pastries. Executive Pastry Chef Pierre Chambon infuses oriental sweet treats with French classical brilliance offering Chinese Doughnuts with vanilla cream and Japanese Cotton Cheesecake offset with a plum and pepper compote as a means of bringing your brunch experience to conclusion. As I reached my final destination I concluded that this had indeed been a ‘one-of-a-kind’ experience where the best possible ingredients and inventive pairings ensured that every twist and turn revealed something surprising and yet also customary. Re/Asian Cuisine can be found on 50th Floor of The Four Seasons Bahrain. No visa or passport required to commence your junket of French and oriental fusion! STARLIGHT Delight SOFITEL BAHRAIN ZALLAQ THALASSA SEA & SPA continues to dominate Ramadan festivities with their awe-inspiring tent Layali Al Zallaq drawing you into a dreamy evening-time oasis.

he setting for all Ramadan celebrations at the Sofitel is one of the most resplendent tents in Bahrain. Layali Al Zallaq is a fairy tale inspired space with their trademark bright stars ceiling overseeing all manner of celebrations. The gem like sparkling roof lights are set against azure blues and turquoises drawing diners into a truly escapist experience. The nocturnal nature of Iftar and Ghabga celebrations is skilfully reflected in the dĂŠcor. The silver silhouette of a camel housed inside a white tower complete with illuminated dome adds to the 1001 Arabian nights styling. The Sofitel resort itself is a blend of lush greenery and breathtaking views across the Arabian Sea. Within these grounds the Ramadan tent sits and is without a doubt one of the most alluring tents I have visited during the recent celebrations. Having refocussed and drawn my attention away from my elegant surroundings and back to the matter at hand I began my culinary journey. The platters were like artwork themselves, alive with colour and texture which awakened the senses. The vast array of Arabic breads including Yuyu suspended from tall silver pedestals topped with all manner of crushed nuts and seeds. The breads proved to be the perfect vehicles with which to devour many of the savoury dishes and dips on offer. Perhaps one of the most surprising but very welcome additions to the traditional middle eastern staples was the Oriental section. Crisp, refreshing salads and sushi were presented delicately on flat, white, wooden platters which mimicked the stilted buildings found in the far east. Foul and Balila are some of the more common variations of Hummus and blended bean dishes. Ornate dishes decorated with intricate Arabic patterns contained an enviable variety of luxuriant dips topped 78

CHIC Eats with all manner of middle eastern oils, fruit and nuts. As I mentioned earlier the fresh selection of breads were the perfect receptacles for transferring each mouthful from plate to palate. The live Arabic music certainly enhanced the flavours and filled the tent with another element to compliment the tantalising aromas. The silver cauldrons interspersed with traditional earns and tea kettles on top of carts and tiled stations were brimming with Middle Eastern delights. The whole, spiced chickens which nestled amongst fluffy aromatic rice comprised part of the Bahraini speciality section. The Machboos was bounteous and thoroughly irresistible. In addition Bahrain brought Madrouba and Jareesh to the table. North Africa also came to the party with truly decadent dishes. The Manakish, dough topped with cheese, herbs and a variety of meats and show stopping shawarma infused with Moroccan spices was hearty and had a comforting familiarity. In case you were concerned that Vegetarians or those a little more health conscious were being neglected , fear not as The Falafel Station was vast, vibrant and voluminous. Phyllo stuffed with Chicken and mixed grills were some of the highlights of the savoury offerings at the Ghabga feast. Pastries played a significant part both for those with a penchant for all things piquant and mouthwatering or those ready to move on to something more ambrosial and sumptuous, their array of desserts! If you are keen to be more hands on then ‘Make your own Kunafa’ should be the station you head for. Empty shells waiting to be filled with decadence in the form of Nutella, pistachio and dark chocolate. Tagines , propped open to reveal tiny pastries and cakes which left a space for the all important Turkish ice cream or Dondurma. Teetering towers of cones were poised to be prepared spectacularly. In addition guests were encouraged to sample the creations of the chocolatier and pastry chef. Chocolate lollipops and dipped miniature donuts glistened invitingly. Colourful macaroons were scattered amongst hand made truffles, a veritable ‘Chocolate Factory’ of edible creations and I don’t think I dare mention the Umm Ali! The Sofitel Layali Al Zallaq Ramadan tent offers incredible value for such exquisite quality and quantity. When I visited women enjoyed 50% discount on an already competitive price every Monday throughout The Holy Month. If you are planning a gathering or simply want to indulge with a loved one then look no further. I suspect one visit simply won’t be enough!

henever we encounter new creations from Mercedes-Benz we are always expecting a certain level of class and performance out of the experience. And how could we not? These automobile goliaths have been producing luxury vehicles since the early 1900’s and have graced the motor world with a vast array of spectacular machines over the last century or so. When Al Haddad Motors gave us an opportunity to test drive the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic Coupé, we graciously accepted and soon found our eyes tracing the beautiful lines of the latest offering from the German master craftsmen. The first feature to make an impact is the diamond radiator grille with chrome inserts and pins. This combined with aggressively shaped LED headlights that look as if they are trying to stare you down, the front end alone let’s one know that this car means business. The body carries broad

shoulders, made sleek by the flowing lines of the exterior. The spoiler lip and diffuser together with the air outlets are all beautifully incorporated into the sporty design, hinting at the vehicle’s control at high speeds. 21inch, 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels add their touch of class and lend their voice to the yet to be experienced capabilities of the AMG. The horizontally orientated taillights lend the vehicle a confident, progressive look, boldly finishing off the dynamic high point of the iconic rear end. Every line and every detail appears to be urging this car forward, and who were we to stop it? Sliding into the driver’s seat of this midsized SUV, the standard of the interior was immediately obvious, if not expected. Every feature and trim, made from high-quality materials, are well positioned and speak of the class of this Coupé. Premium leather and stitching along with three option ambient lighting ensures the interior is impressive on the eye. A Burmester Surround Sound System adds to the already great list of features and ensures your favourite driving anthems are crisp and clear along the journey. In the back, we found the roof to be quite low, but this should only be a problem if you are six foot and over. There is however, plenty of legroom and separate temperature control for the rear, to ensure family or other passengers are comfortable. The boot is really spacious and would easily carry a full family’s bags to the airport. It can be opened and closed by a foot sensor or with the key. With cup holders, USB points, spacious door bins and many other little pockets of space, this car is as convenient to travel in as it is to drive. As we pressed the starter button, the unmistakable sound of the AMG sports exhaust system emanating from the chrome tailpipes made us smile instantly. We pulled onto the road feeling like we were in charge. The high positioning of the driver’s seat gives one a commanding view and a sense of control, as does the beautifully designed AMG, flat bottomed steering wheel. As soon as foot touched peddle, we knew we were in for a treat. The V6 biturbo engine effortlessly delivers 520Nm of torque from an output of 270kW (367 hp) which allows it to accelerate from 0-100 kmh in just 4.9 seconds. Not bad for a midsized SUV! The five transmission modes range from comfortable and efficient through to extremely sporty, although we have to admit, we found the sounds and performance of this vehicle in comfort mode, to be the equivalent of others we have experienced in sport mode. The acceleration is exciting and the grip on the corners, absolute. One can always feel that they and their family are safe in this car. Safety features are always a top priority for Mercedes and include steering assist, lane keeping assist, parking sensors, a 360 degree camera, multiple airbags and much more. By the time our experience was over, we had a renewed respect for Mercedes-Benz and their continuous mission to produce top quality, high performance, and safe motor vehicles. 84

MISS Ohlala

G IRL P OWER Miss Ohlala explores today’s usage of the word ‘empowerment’ and why not everything is as it seems.

We’ve all been there, unifying ourselves as one with the embellished use of ‘girl power’, may it be in the workplace, at home or indeed anywhere for that matter and such acts should be celebrated and nurtured - shouldn’t they? Since the late 90s and early 00s, consumerism masked as ‘girl power’ i.e. watered-down, novel feminism, has been used to sell stuff to young women and women alike in the name of women’s rights. Unfortunately buying sporty silk tracksuit pants won’t make you empowered, but more-so the bank. This, ironically, is doing the opposite. Weight Watchers and Spanx have been tapping into the inner-feminist of many modern girls by assuring their products will unleash a dose of empowerment and ‘sticking it to the man’. Of course, the ideals of both an expensive diet and slimming underwear feed the male gaze, all while making megabucks. Some would rightly argue that sucking your podgy belly in with Lycra and ordering a pack of gluten-free ready meals on Amazon is not, in fact, empowering; it’s consumerism with a quite translucent mask on no detoxifying properties here! All of this hoo-hah about “reclaiming” and “accepting” areas of our bodies/lives is ingrained in a very important conversation that needs to 98

be had. But not in regards to empowerment. If you’re growing out your armpit hair/snail trail/miscellaneous zones, then good for you! We’re all very genuinely proud you have the ability to rise above unrelenting social norms and kick the razor. But, if you’re uttering “I’m reclaiming my fuzz once and for all!” well, you don’t need to be empowered. Because, if one of your priorities is sending your BFF a snapchat of your newly organic pits, you most likely aren’t reclaiming anything but a boost in self-confidence and friendship personal points. Celebrating female body hair and other feminist acts is amazing and positive and I’m glad you’re doing so, but look a little deeper. Girls and women and indeed other sidelined members of society that actually need to reclaim their bodies, sexualities and power genuinely need empowerment to be equal members of society. Take young women and prepubescent girls in areas such as Nigeria and South Africa who are victims of breast ironing. Methods of breast ironing include the use of hot stones, hammers or even heated spatulas in order to disfigure developing chests. It’s a shocking reality many girls as young as eight or nine are experiencing, and mothers - although under the impression they are doing something positive - are the biggest perpetrators. They’re some of those who really need those empowering hashtag and body ownership campaigns. The repeated abuse of middle class, well-to-do people “reclaiming” their healthy, happy bodies acts like a watering can on critical work that needs to be done to give the most marginalised people on the planet more visibility. So, let us dig a little deeper, open our hearts AND eyes to the reality of what empowerment truly is and be distinctively selfless.
