Dear OQHA Members,

What a year we have had. I think this year has truly shown that the Ohio Quarter Horse Association is, above all else, a family that supports each other through all of life’s ups and downs. As I reflect back on the year’s events, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the support and encouragement that this organization provides to its members. It truly is one-of-a-kind. Working behind the scenes of the world’s largest horse show is a dream that I never thought possible, until it became reality. The Congress truly is where dreams come true, and legends are made. Thank you, as always, to the OQHA staff, Board of Directors, Tri-Chairmen, and all of the members for your never-ending support and assistance throughout another wonderful year. May 2024 be even better! As we usher in the new year and new and exciting opportunities for growth and change, let us not forget why we do what we do: for the love of the American Quarter Horse. President’s Letter

Dear Ohio Quarter Horse Family, The 2023 All American Quarter Horse Congress (AAQHC) is in the books, and when the dust settles it will probably be remembered as one of the most successful Congresses. The leadership and Board of Directors were determined to have an outstanding show and we certainly achieved that goal! We added multiple new classes and witnessed record numbers of exhibitors and visitors to the Congress. With the help and commitment from our valued exhibitors, the OQHA Board of Directors, the Tri-Chairmen, our leadership team, our affiliate associations, the OQHA staff, and so many volunteers, we worked together to achieve and exceed our goals. We all need to thank our CEO, Dr. Scott Myers, and Executive Vice President of Operations, Justin Billings, for their hard work and leadership that made this year’s Congress such a huge success. The countless hours, phone calls, and meetings seemed to never end, but their commitment to OQHA and the Congress never wavered. We are all very fortunate to have those two individuals and their commitment to the success of OQHA and the Congress. Dr. Scott Myers, we the OQHA membership, Board of Directors, OQHA staff, Congress workers, exhibitors, sponsors, and vendors cannot thank you enough for your leadership and commitment over the past 11 years as Executive Director and CEO. The success of OQHA and the Congress are unparalleled in the horse industry. We look forward to working with you in 2024 as you transition from the CEO position. In 2024 there are important changes in the leadership of OQHA. Mr. Justin Billings will transition from Executive Vice President to CEO. We can look forward to a seamless transition as Dr. Scott Myers will remain as a consultant to OQHA and the Congress. To all of you, it has been my honor to serve as your President this year and to see our association not only address challenges, but to grow and flourish. It is everyone’s passion for our industry and the Congress that helped make 2023 a huge success. I want to personally thank the OQHA Officers, Board of Directors, the Past Presidents, Honorary Directors, OQHA staff, Dr. Myers, all of the AQHA trainers, and exhibitors for supporting me! Your commitment and passion for keeping us at the forefront of our industry is beyond compare and all of you truly are the best in the business. I also want to thank our affiliate associations for their time and effort in providing our members with incredible horse shows throughout the year. You continue to demonstrate that Ohio remains one of the most competitive states in the AQHA show industry. Your hard work has kept Ohio horse shows well attended and the best in the country. We are looking forward to even greater events in 2024. As a reminder, the nominations for 2024 Officers and Directors have been finalized and you will be receiving your voting ballots electronically. Please review the list of candidates and make sure your voice is heard by submitting your vote by January 24, 2024 at 5pm EST. I look forward to celebrating everyone’s success and achievements in 2023 at our OQHA Annual Banquet. Make sure to plan on attending one of the best state association awards banquets where well over $100,000 in awards will be given to our members. Ohio on the Big Stage Ohio Claims Multiple Places on the AQHA Top Ten Show Lists of 2022 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) shows stand as a testament to the endless versatility and boundless talents of the American Quarter Horse. Each year, thousands of members around the world turn out in huge numbers to support these shows, circuits, and special events. AQHA annually tips its hat to the Top 10 Overall Shows from the previous year. These lists are determined by total entries divided by the number of shows that an event contains, adding an extra layer of excitement and a nod to the dedication and passion of show management teams. In 2022, Ohio proudly emerged in the limelight. Four events secured their position on the esteemed list, a testament to the vibrant and thriving Quarter Horse industry that operates throughout Ohio.

Top Level 1 Show: #1, NOQHA Level 1 Extravaganza History was made in Canfield, Ohio in 2010, when the Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Association (NOQHA) hosted the first-ever AQHA Level 1 show. This was the first of its kind anywhere in the United States, and was the beginning of something truly remarkable. With 239 entries, it was a promising start, but little did anyone know that this humble beginning would evolve into the pinnacle of Level 1 shows nationwide. Fast forward to 2022, and the NOQHA event has transformed into a powerhouse, claiming the coveted title of the top-ranked AQHA Level 1 show in the entire country, boasting an impressive 471 entries. This growth is nothing short of spectacular, proof of the show’s magnetism for participants seeking to showcase their horses and their skills. This achievement didn’t happen overnight; it’s a result of dedication on behalf of the Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Association. In 2011, the NOQHA show found a new home at the University of Findlay Western Farm, a pivotal moment in the association’s history. Today, they host the Level 1 event as part of their annual Spring Extravaganza, creating a dynamic event that unfolds over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

A tradition of generosity and recognition has taken root at this event, with prestigious prizes symbolizing achievement and excellence. Thanks to the support of Ohio Quarter Horse Association (OQHA), trophy saddles are awarded to the High Point Amateur and High Point Youth exhibitors. Reserve champions in these divisions receive a stylish headstall and reins, courtesy of Schneiders Saddlery. The High Point Small Fry champion and reserve champion also receive prize packages, recognizing their enthusiasm and budding talent. Notably, the NOQHA Level 1 Extravaganza didn’t just reach the pinnacle in 2022; it proudly wore the crown in 2021 as well, affirming its consistent excellence and the unwavering support it enjoys from participants year after year.

Top AQHA Show: #1, All American Quarter Horse Congress The All American Quarter Horse Congress is hosted each year by the Ohio Quarter Horse Association and is the world’s largest horse show. OQHA was established in 1951 and is a state affiliate of the American Quarter Horse Association. The first Congress was held over 3 days in 1967 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds (now the Ohio Expo Center), where it has remained. The Congress continues to be a popular destination for horsemen and women, with over 26,000 entries and over 650,000 visitors in 2022. The Congress continues to be the #1 AQHA show and is known as the place “where legends are made.”

Top AQHA Show: #5 & #7, SOQHA The Madness & The Pre-Madness The inaugural Madness took place in March 2013, and it marked the genesis of a remarkable tradition. Fast forward to 2023, and the celebration of The Madness’ 10th Anniversary reflects the enduring success of the event. Hosted by the Southern Ohio Quarter Horse Association (SOQHA) and managed by Kathy Avolt’s An Equine Production, The Madness and Pre-Madness have consistently found their home at the prestigious World Equestrian Center (WEC) in Wilmington, Ohio. The origin of the event’s moniker, “Madness,” stems from the overlap of the show with the NCAA basketball tournament known as “March Madness.” In those early years, the spirited atmosphere included a basketball hoop, inviting exhibitors to test their skills not only in the arena, but also on the court, with the chance to win prizes such as televisions, iPads, and more. The connection between the horse show and the basketball games created a unique experience for all exhibitors and spectators. Though The Madness and Pre-Madness are now held in May, the name and that same reputation for excellence have stuck. This is proven by the 2022 numbers: 11,439 entries and 6 shows of The Madness and 7,199 entries and 4 shows of The Pre-Madness. The Pre-Madness was initially known as the SOQHA Youth Challenge show. SOQHA has now moved their show The Challenge to March. SOQHA youth members hold a Dad’s Walk Trot class at The Madness, a crowd-favorite and a major fundraiser for Southern Ohio’s youth. As WEC expanded its facilities, introducing the R&L Arena and additional stall barns, The Madness and Pre-Madness experienced exponential growth. Achieving AQHA Top 10 status for an impressive 9 out of 10 years, the event has become a cornerstone in the show calendar of many equestrians in Ohio and beyond. The landscape of The Madness and Pre-Madness has transformed over the years, with significant developments in its class structure and enticing prizes. In its early years, the Novice Horse Slot Western Pleasure class, featuring added money for maiden horses, stole the spotlight. A testament to the event’s evolution, the maiden and novice classes have since been separated. The Equine Chronicle contributes a generous $25,000 prize to elevate the stakes in the maiden class, while $15,000 is awarded to the winners of the novice. 10 Ohio Quarter Horse News

Expanding the pool of exciting opportunities, The Madness and Pre-Madness have also introduced additional slot classes with attractive incentives. The Green Trail Slot has exhibitors vying for a $5,000 prize, while The Luxury Line presents another $5,000 to the winners of the Novice Horse Under Saddle class. As The Madness and Pre-Madness continue to carve their legacy in the Quarter Horse industry, enhancements in class offerings, prizes, and exhibitor experience demonstrate SOQHA’s commitment to innovation, excellence, and a continued celebration of the American Quarter Horse.

Top AQHA Show: #10, The Little Buckeye The Little Buckeye, hosted by the Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association (OAQHA) and managed by Mark Harrell, with secretary services provided by Simply Show Services, has undergone a transformative journey. Form its roots as a two-week circuit, it has evolved into a progressive and influential weekend show. The event has moved from various locations around Ohio, adapting its offerings, before settling down at its current home of Garwood Arena in Columbiana, Ohio. Throughout these changes, though, one constant has remained steadfast: the unwavering focus on the exhibitor. OAQHA’s mission revolves around delivering an unparalleled experience for every participant. The Little Buckeye not only embraces change, but actively searches out new ways to ensure that the exhibitor’s satisfaction remains at the forefront of the event’s purpose. Rooted in their own experiences as amateur exhibitors, OAQHA takes a unique approach by envisioning the event through the lens of what they themselves would desire. This perspective fuels their commitment to transforming aspirations into reality. The exhibitor-centric mindset is reflected in an array of perks carefully crafted to elevate the participant experience.

New Classes, New Opportunities On September 26, the Congress kicked off with a full-slate of reining and ranch classes. This portion of the show has experienced such a growth spurt that the need for additional days to accommodate that growth became apparent during this year’s event. The show then transitioned to roping and, new for 2023, two full days of YEDA competition before moving into two weeks of general horse show classes. New classes meant new opportunities for exhibitors to etch their names in Congress history. The list of new classes spanned almost every discipline and included Breakaway Roping (31 entered), Level 1 Amateur Walk Trot Hunter Under Saddle (31 entered) and Western Pleasure (58 entered), Level 1 Youth Walk Trot Hunter Under Saddle (16 entered) and Western Pleasure (27 entered), NYATT Ranch Riding (39 entered), Small Fry Ranch Riding (13 entered), Amateur Select Ranch Trail (36 entered), Junior Ranch Trail (50 entered), Senior Ranch Trail (84 entered), Amateur Working Western Rail (67 entered), Amateur Select Working Western Rail (48 entered), Junior Working Western Rail (62 entered), Senior Working Western Rail (62 entered), and Youth Working Western Rail (92 entered). New stakes classes included 6 Year Old & Over Maturity Open Trail Stakes (82 entered), presented by The Johns Family and Nothin But Nett, and 4 & 5 Year Old Ranch Riding Stakes (41 entered), presented by Headley Quarter Horses. This year’s Congress also saw the much-anticipated return of the Open Versatility Stakes (10 entered), in part due to the generosity of presenting sponsor Gerri Leigh Pratt. All these positive changes attracted the best riders and some of the most talented horses in the country. With record-breaking numbers and enthusiastic crowds filling the stands, the Congress was once again the ultimate destination for top-tier competition, where dreams were chased, champions were crowned, and the spirit of horsemanship thrived.

Major Events The NRHA Level 3 and 4 Open Reining Futurity finals were the first major event, being held Saturday, September 30th. With over $275,000 in purse money, this event is always a crowd-favorite. Thank you to the Friends of the Congress Reining for all of your support! Taking home the Level 4 title with a score of 224.5, in the very last run of the night, was Brian Bell, riding Crystalized Whizkey for owner Wallace Wood of Oakfield, Tenn. Ohio native Brandon Brant won the Level 3 title with a score of 221, riding Spook The Gunman for owner Cynthia Arlene Thiel of Dublin, Ohio.

With a new date of Sunday, October 1, the Freestyle Reining rounded out the ultimate reining weekend at the Congress. As always, the Freestyle Reining was immensely popu lar and this year saw some new faces com peting, thanks to its proximity to the reining portion of the show and generous prize money from long-time presenting sponsor and corporate partner dac Vitamins and Minerals, who celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2023. Winning the open division for their second year in a row was Keith Ceddia and Xtra Dun Step, owned by Jennifer Groehn and Jerry Douglas. Their Mission Impossible routine wowed the crowd and achieved their mission of securing the Congress Champion title! Winning the non pro division was Jessicah Keller and Shift N Gears from Brashear, Texas. Her rockstar routine also earned her the reserve champion title in the open division.

The Congress PBR was once again held on Friday, October 6, with new OQHA corporate partner Western Edge App returning as the presenting sponsor. Congratulations to co-champions Tyler Manor and Zane Cook, who shared in the $20,000 overall cash prize for topping the leader board. The Heroes on Horses event, also held Friday, October 6, drew an enthusiastic crowd and displayed an inspiring show of patriotism. This event featured a remarkable ensemble of representatives, from arena team sponsors, corporate partners, the Congress Queen candidates, and several local veterans. The event, which tugged at the heartstrings of all in attendance, was made possible through the gracious sponsorship of Angela Wade, supporting sponsors Tribute Superior Equine Nutrition and the Janis Family, and OQHA corporate partner The National Snaffle Bit Association Foundation. The 2023 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen was crowned on Friday, October 6 during a special ceremony in Congress Hall. Congratulations to the new Queen, Miss Jessica Blevins from Indiana Quarter Horse Association, who went to work immediately representing the world’s largest horse show! The Congress Cutting was held for the first time at the Bullen Equestrian Center on the Preble County Fairgrounds in Eaton, Ohio. With over 600 cuts, and held in conjunction with the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Great Lakes Circuit Championship, this event was a monumental success. A special thanks goes to OQHA Honorary Director Chuck Smith, who graciously took the reins of this year’s event, and to all who contributed to the triumph of the Congress Cutting.

The Congress Super Sale featured a new sale manager and a new format for 2023. With three great sessions culminating into one spectacular sale, the Congress Super Sale was held Saturday, October 14 and packed the Lausche Building full of excited buyers who broke several Super Sale records. The Congress team and OQHA Board also introduced a new educational series at this year’s event, the Pro Horsemen Perspective Series. With topics ranging from ranch riding to trail to hunt seat equitation to barrel racing, this series was provided free to anyone, complements of the industry-leading professional horsemen who volunteered to lead these clinics. The Congress ended with the exhilarating return of the Open Versatility Stakes, generously sponsored by Gerri Leigh Pratt. This event drew a remarkable crowd and showcased the true versatility of the American Quarter Horse. Amidst fun, laughter, and an overall exciting experience, the Congress crowned champions Julian Harris and Born With Assets.

Congress at the Capitol On Wednesday, October 4, Capitol Square got a taste of western culture when the All American Quarter Horse Congress paid a visit to the Ohio Statehouse, bringing four American Quarter Horses to the steps of the President William McKinley monument. A press conference was held, featuring remarks from Lt. Governor Jon Husted, Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik, Department of Agriculture Director Brian Baldridge, and OQHA CEO Dr. Scott Myers. Also in attendance were NBC4 anchor Monica Day, Ohio Expo Center General Manager Virgil Strickler and Assistant General Manager Alicia Shoults, OQHA Executive Vice President of Operations Justin Billings, OQHA President George Seanor, Congress Tri-Chairmen Chris Darnell and Kelli Diaz, 2022 Congress Queen Kylie Good, and multiple other OQHA staff and youth members. 2023 saw the 56th annual Congress, all of which have called Columbus home. The Congress welcomes a staggering 650,000 people and 7,500 horses to the Ohio Expo Center and generates over $400 million for the central Ohio economy. During the press conference, all the speakers emphasized the profound impact of the Congress and the equine industry on Ohio and its economy. True to horse show tradition, the event ended with a buckle presentation to Lt. Governor Husted, Director Mihalik, and Director Baldridge by OQHYA members Aviana Nemeth and Colton Smith. OQHA extends its gratitude to all who attended the press conference and deeply appreciates their time and commitment to making the All American Quarter Horse Congress the largest horse show in the world and allowing it to continue to call Columbus home. Congress Corral Makes Its Return After a hiatus, the Congress Corral made its return to the All American Quarter Horse Congress, this time entitled “Congress Corral Winner’s Circle Bar & Grill.” Offering an onsite, sit-down dining option, the Corral provided a warm and welcoming ambiance to patrons. In addition to delicious cuisine, the Corral also was an excellent space for attendees to tune into sporting events without leaving the grounds. Food options were provided by Chris Johnson, owner of Johnson Culinary Group and the Sweet Shop. The Corral also welcomed the presence of Blade and Bow Whiskey, part of the Diageo family. Diageo is one of the newest corporate partners of the Congress and the Congress is proud to have Crown Royal as the Official Spirit of the Congress.

Congress Special Awards The All American Quarter Horse Congress recognized and honored individuals who have left a lasting impact on the Congress and the Quarter Horse industry. The Friend of the Congress Award is one of these such honors. This is a prestigious recognition presented to individuals who have demonstrated unwavering commitment, dedication, and support to both the Congress and the Quarter Horse community. This award was presented to Steve and Kathy Headley in 2023. The Headley’s journey with Quarter Horses has been nothing short of inspiring. Over the years, they have generously shared their time, resources, and love for the American Quarter Horse to nurture the growth of this remarkable breed. Their support has helped create a thriving community of horse enthusiasts and has elevated the Congress to new heights. The Friend of the Congress Award recognized the enduring dedication of Steve and Kathy Headley to the Quarter Horse family and their unwavering commitment to preserving its heritage. The Champion of the Congress Award was presented to Vern and Rita Habighorst of Blue Ribbon Custom Tack. This award celebrates a partnership that has spanned four remarkable decades, and honors the steadfast support of Vern and Rita to the Congress. For the past 40 years, Blue Ribbon has been more than an event sponsor; they have been an integral part of the Congress family and the rich tradition this event embodies. Their dedication to the sport and community has been unparalleled, and it has allowed the Congress to reach new levels. The heart of the partnership with Blue Ribbon lies in Vern and Rita’s genuine passion for equestrian sport, their commitment to innovation, and their relentless pursuit of the highest standards of quality. Their saddles have carried riders to countless victories, turning dreams into reality on the Congress stage. They have helped create lasting memories and remarkable stories of triumph.

And finally, Chris Cecil Darnell was recognized as the newest inductee into the All American Quarter Horse Congress Hall of Fame. In 2005, Chris joined the OQHA Board of Directors, eventually serving multiple terms as president and Congress Tri-Chairman, embarking on a journey of service, leadership, and passion that continues to inspire. Similar to her father Jess Cecil, Chris has left an indelible mark on OQHA and the Congress, as her dedication and tireless commitment have left not only a lasting impact, but has also helped to shape the future of the association. Her time on the board has been marked by countless hours of hard work, thoughtful decision-making, and the pursuit of excellence in all that she does. Her vision and leadership have helped OQHA and the Congress evolve and grow, ensuring its continued success for years to come. May these honors be a reminder of the deep appreciation for all that Steve and Kathy Headley, Vern and Rita Habighorst, and Chris Cecil Darnell have done for Ohio Quarter Horse Association and the All American Quarter Horse Congress.

2023 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen

Jessica Blevins

Jessica is the daughter of Ryan and Jane Blevins, and was born and raised in rural Indiana on her family’s grain and small horse farm. Growing up, she was heavily involved in 4-H and FFA, earning numerous prestigious awards while also participating in Quarter Horse shows. While in high school, she also thrived in sports including volleyball, basketball, and track. Maintaining a high GPA while also being a three-sport athlete, she was the only graduating senior in her class to earn both the Seymour Scholar Award and the Athletic Achievement Award. Jessica aspires to graduate from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and become a CPA, securing a challenging position with a reputable, values driven company that will allow her to fully utilize her analytical and leadership skills. During Jessica’s time in college, she renewed her passion for showing Quarter Horses, and teamed up with the mare “Potential Winner” in the Level 1 Amateur Western Pleasure class. The pair found immediate success, and the warmth and support that Jessica felt from the Quarter Horse community re-ignited a dream that she had for many years as a child - to compete for the title of All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. After being crowned Indiana Quarter Horse Association Queen and proudly representing her home state, Jessica fulfilled her childhood dream, becoming the 2023 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen. Fueled by her sincere desire to be a welcoming ambassador for the Quarter Horse community, Jessica’s mission as the 2023 Congress Queen is to help unite both new and long-time members and to be a positive role model for younger Quarter Horse enthusiasts. Grateful for the blessings in her own life, Jessica also wants to continue to demonstrate the importance of community service and “giving back” to organizations that positively impact so many lives as this year’s Congress Queen. Throughout her reign in Indiana, Jessica has used her platform to help promote awareness and raise funds for local therapeutic riding programs, and was also passionate about promoting businesses that provide support and sponsorships throughout the Quarter Horse industry. As the 2023 Congress Queen, Jessica plans to continue pursuing these passions through this incredible platform. Queen’s Letter

Dear OQHA Community, This past year has truly been one to remember. I had the absolute pleasure of representing the Ohio Quarter Horse Association in a variety of ways. Throughout my reign, I attended the AQHA Level 1 East Championships, the Ohio State Junior Fair Horse Show, the AQHA Youth World Show, and many other shows outside of the AQHA industry. I enjoyed every minute of representing OQHA this summer and within a blink of an eye the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen’s Contest was here. The Queen’s Contest was an experience I truly will never forget. It allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and meet so many amazing people. Throughout the contest, I was also able to create lifelong friendships with many of the other queen candidates. I forever will be grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity. As my reign comes to an end, I want to thank the entire OQHA community for allowing me to represent your wonderful association; it truly was an honor. What sets me apart from the rest is my drive and willingness to learn. I am always open to trying new events and I keep an open ear to be able to take in any information I can. I spend countless hours day in and day out at the barn. This sport is my passion. I put everything I have into becoming stronger and more well-rounded in this industry. I have been blessed to have such a strong support system through my parents and everyone around me. I really couldn’t be where I am without them. I have been showing my horse TJ Smokin Silverado for the past 5 years. I broke TJ out as a two-yearold and have trained him myself in reining and ranch events. The Ohio Quarter Horse Association will once again utilize electronic balloting for the 2024 Open, Amateur, and Youth elections. The use of Election Buddy gives OQHA the opportunity to streamline a process that previously required more time and expense for both the association and its members. Members will receive a link, associated with their OQHA membership, via email and text message, allowing members to choose their most convenient option. The automated system will only allow members to submit one ballot per OQHA membership number. OQHA must have a valid email and mobile number on file for each member in order for the system to function properly. In addition, many OQHA memberships are family memberships and only have one email and/or phone number on file. Each eligible family member is able to vote, however OQHA must provide Election Buddy with valid email and mobile numbers for each family member. Please contact the OQHA office to update your or your family’s contact information. If you do not receive a ballot, please contact the OQHA office to ensure your contact information is correct and up-to-date. I am a life member of the Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Association, a past president, and currently serve on the NOQHA Executive Committee. My wife and I have owned and shown Quarter Horses for the past 30 years.

I have been an OQHA board member for 8 years, serving on the Executive Committee, 1st Vice President, President, Congress Tri-Chairman, and on many committees. Currently, I am President of OQHA. As chairman of the building committee, I oversaw the renovations to OQHA’s headquarters. I have also been the Congress Trail Coordinator for the past 18 years. If re-elected, I would contribute directly to the operations of OQHA, with special interest to committes that I feel are very important to the future of OQHA, namely Congress as Tri-Chairman, finance, rules, long range planning, and horse show advisory.

2. Continue to support the All American Quarter Horse Congress experience from the perspectives of the exhibitors, the vendors, and visitors. We need to continue to elevate the class offerings at the Congress to stay current with the horse show trends. I work with AQHA’s Championship Show Department and am a part of the show office team at all AQHA Championship Shows (AQHA World Show, AQHYA World Show, VRH World Show, etc.). Beyond AQHA, I work at a multitude of other shows throughout the year, such as NSBA World Show, WCHA Halter Million, Virginia Spring Breakout, etc. I sit on the AQHA Show Committee and am actively involved in the horse show industry as a Certified Show Secretary. Beyond my professional experience in the industry, I co-own a boarding/training facility in northeast Ohio with my mom, Tammy Braham, and

During my first year as an OQHA Director in 2023, I spent extensive time learning the inner workings of the association and where I could provide support. I sat on the NYATT steering committee and assisted with the NYATT ceremony and contest. I also worked in the show office at the Congress and was involved with the office team, and I attended a variety of events to support the production of the horse show. The Congress is an enormous event that requires a great team of people in order to be successful. My goal was to be as involved and helpful as possible. I have learned a great deal and look forward to becoming involved in the production of the Congress to an even greater extent in the coming years.

My most active area of contribution is with the speed and contesting. I am the voice for this group of competitors, addressing their concerns, and helping to improve the Barrels and Poles portion of the Congress. I have also actively participated in my other committee assignments. I will continue to work hard on any and all committees to which I am assigned, as well as attending monthly OQHA meetings. I will work hard to learn from the experience around me, and to contribute all that I can.

1. OQHA has been diligently working with state government and non traditional sponsors to ensure the continued success of the Congress. While currently in a positive position, we need to continue this mindset to secure the future of the Congress and our association. 2. Continuuing to expand the horizons of OQHA is vital. Examples of this are the trail ride, the Southern Belle, the OQH Foundation, etc. OQHA must be open to new opportunities and keep up with technological advances, while maintaining the position of promoting the American Quarter Horse. 3. From the inception of our business, my wife and I have been active supporters of the Quarter Horse industry here in Ohio by attempting to involve clients, from Small Fry to Select, to compete to their appropriate level and discipline in AQHA Shows here in Ohio. Their involvement have led to several of them continuing to be active as Directors in OQHA, NOQHA, AQHA employees along with Congress workers. As I’ve said previously, I had served in many capacities on the OQHA and NOQHA board of directors working to promote the quarter horse industry here in Ohio. If elected, I will devote my time, experience and passion for the industry to OQHA for the betterment of the breed.

For the past 40 years, along with my wife Julie, I have been actively involved in the Quarter Horse industry in Ohio and internationally. I have trained, exhibited and coached many horses and clients to AQHA national titles, Congress Champions and trained horses and fine horsemen. Along with being an International Clinician and AQHA/ NSBA Judge, I served as a Director for NOQHA and OQHA chairing and sitting on many committees and youth advisor for over 18 years before stepping away as other career choices evolved. I continue to volunteer in as many capacities as possible to help educate the public and specifically youth in proper techniques of care, training and exhibiting of many breeds of horses. Currently I am the Director of the Western Riding Program, Riding Instructor, and Ranch Horse Team Coach at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio. Through this position, I am continuing my quest of educating young people by sharing my equine passion with fine horsemen to help the horse industry continue and grow.

1. I feel the top priority, although assumed, should be attempting to adhere to the complexity of the OQHA Mission Statement: The Ohio Quarter Horse Association will, protect and promote the Quarter Horse and the interests of owners, breeders, exhibitors and enthusiasts. OQHA is committed to setting the standard in the equine industry by engaging equine enthusiasts through world-class competition, recreational activities, education and engagement of the next generation of participants and industry leaders. 2. In this time of growing competition with major Quarter Horse show events across the country with environmentally equine friendly facilities, I feel OQHA needs to continue to maintain the uniqueness of the Congress excitement. Everything from the tremendous level of competition of a multitude of disciplines to the trade show, the entertainment events, to the food venders, to the youth team tournament, to the judging competition and down to puppy alley all of which add to the uniqueness of the Congress bringing a spectator base truly unlike any other Quarter Horse event in the country. 3. To utilize the power and assets of the OQHA to enhance Quarter Horse growth in Ohio with support of the affiliate associations and ultimately the membership and creatively further support the declining quarter horse breeding industry here in the state.

1. Increase membership in OQHA-Increasing OQHA’s membership expands not only OQHA’s reach, but also the reach of OQHA’s affiliate associations. New members, whether open, youth, or amateur, will bring fresh ideas, new perspectives, and increased participation, which benefits the entire Ohio Quarter Horse community. 2. Continue to Grow Congress-I worked very hard this year to get L1 Walk Trot classes added to the Congress schedule and secured the sponsorship for those rail classes. While the L1 Walk Trot classes were limited this year, my goal is to increase the L1 Walk Trot division offerings at the Congress. I’ve been a member of OQHA for 10 years. Until now I haven’t run to sit on any boards. I believe that if you’re going to sign up to get involved, you need to make sure you have the time it takes to be involved. I believe the timing is right for me. Up until now, my involvement has been more based around helping my son and wife out and making donations where they are needed. My son is currently running for the position of president of the OQHYA and my wife sits on the OAQHA board. Over the past few years, I’ve helped out with fundraisers, getting sponsorships, Youth World, and any way I can at the weekend shows. In 2023, I attended the AQHA Convention and was elected to sit on the show committee. It is my hope to be elected as an OQHA board member so that I can be more involved and give back to an association that has been so good to me and my family.

My contribution to OQHA is everything from being an Arena Team Sponsor at not only the Quarter Horse Congress, but most weekend shows, for the past 10 years, plus donating time to the OQHYA judging team and helping find extra sponsorships when needed for the Youth Excellence Seminar. The Ranch has also sponsored many events. My favorite sponsorship is the lead line at The Little Buckeye; my family and I have sponsored that event for 7+ years. Sponsorships are very important, but time is just as valuable. This coming year, my wife and I are looking very forward to helping the OQHYA judging team with practices and hands-on learning. My top three priorities for OQHA would be centered around the core of what our association was built off of. OQHA sets the standard when it comes to affiliates of AQHA. I feel like it is our responsibility to maintain the values sets by the founders of our association. We must work together to promote growth, encourage involvement, and continue to raise the bar on what state affiliates should look like. The way we can achieve these things is through working together with an open mind, talking about issues that we have been challenged with in the past and looking at what hasn’t worked, plus putting plans in place to move our association in a positive direction.

In this role, I assisted Art O’Brien in revamping the Demonstrations Series into the new Professional Horsemen Perspective Series, which we plan on continuing to grow. Membership is waning in many different activities, not just equine ones. To retain and increase membership you must give members and exhibitors a reason to participate, a reason to care and a reason to come back. For some that will mean adding incentives, sponsors, and new classes to our shows, for others it will be increasing educational and service opportunities.

I ensured our sponsors received accurate recognition; had timely information posted for exhibitors & features scheduled; worked with other committees & board members to make sure we have accurate information on our page for events & information pertinent to OAQHA through the years. OQHA banquet is my favorite time of year because we all get to be together and build that camaraderie. One thing I would love to see OQHA do is to hold a holiday party. Current Involvement Last year I served as a 2022-2023 Director and I absolutely loved the experience. It taught me so much and brought me so many amazing opportunities. I went to the AQHYA Youth Excellence Seminar, where I was elected to be on the AQHYA Board of Directors. It has been an amazing time serving as a director for both the Ohio Quarter Horse and American Quarter Horse Youth boards. This past year I was able to purchase a new horse to show for my last two youth years. I’m so grateful for my parents (Jason and Tai) for letting me chase my dreams on the Ohio Quarter Horse circuit and so grateful for my wonderful trainers (Brian and Darla Lee) for accepting us into their barn and aiding in finding the perfect one. This past year showing Good Ol Southern Boy has been a dream come true. We purchased Ernie in March only being finished in the Western Pleasure and soon added Hunter Under Saddle. I’m so excited to say with hard work and dedication we will finish the year in the top ten in both the Ohio Quarter Horse and American Quarter Horse Congress and to top it off, Ernie and I placed 3rd in the Western Pleasure. This year has been the greatest show year I’ve had and the most involvement I’ve had with OQHYA. I’m so thankful for all the relationships I’ve built showing horses the past 10 years and I’m hopeful 2024 will be the best one yet.

What will you contribute? Serving on the Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Board of Directors for 2023 has taught me so much about OQHYA and I have been able to aid in building our association and making it better every day. If elected as Vice President, I will be able to further build on our goals from last year and focus on involving more youth and increasing our efficiency. The youth running for these leadership positions this year are wonderful and I’m so glad to call them all friends. This year’s preidential candidate is one of my closest friends and I know together we can accomplish great things for OQHYA. If elected, I will continue to engage youth members to make sure we work as a team to fundraise and prepare for the Youth World and Congress. I will encourage every youth member to try new things and get out there. I hope to be a big part in re-establishing our Judging, Hippology, Speech, and Horse Bowl teams. As well as encourage our youth board to work closer with our Region 4 leadership teams. I will be organized and well managed in helping plan and run efficient meetings and will work to delegate responsibilities so that all youth members feel like they are an important part of the association. I will work to make sure we continue our dedication to the American Quarter Horse.

OQHYA’s top priorities should be youth involvement, organization, and making an impact. I feel very strongly that all Ohio Quarter Horse youth should be involved in our great organization, therefore we should have a strong and inclusive environment. I want the youth to look forward to our meetings. I want to strive to have engaging and interactive meetings to help boost our attendance, which in return would get a variety of people involved with new ideas. Another priority is organizing. Having organization and advanced lanning will help people stay involved and informated on what is coming up. If we are organized, the process wil run smoothly and be enjoyable for everyone. This year we added another way to communicate to our members (Stack Team App) and while it may not be perfect, it has aided in keeping everyone informed and organized. I want to build upon that this coming year. Finally, making an impact is the most important priority to me. I want to encourage all youth members to strive to do their best, try new things, and to be a team player, because as a team we could make a great impact on both the American Quarter Horse and Ohio Quarter Horse associations. We all must make an impact to the exhibitors, parents, and trainers at our horse shows. We should strive to do our best in and out of the show ring to show what being an OQHA member is all about.

I would like to share some of the amazing experiences I have been able to do as an OQHYA member with other youth who may not be aware of what our organization has to offer. I also want to encourage more youth to get involved. From showing to judging, there are many ways to get involved.

I served OQHYA as a director for the past four years. I represented OQHYA at the Youth Excellence Seminar in College Station, TX this past June. I have been a member of the youth world show team for the past four years. In October, I represented the Ohio Youth at the Ohio Statehouse, welcoming the Quarter Horse Congress to the city of Columbus along with state politicians.

I have been showing OQHA for over five years now and have been on the OQHYA board for three of those years. I have been an OQHYA director for two years and this past year I was OQHYA’s Secretary.

What will you contribute? I enjoy contributing my time and effort into promoting what OQHYA stands for and the events we participate in and/or promote.

1. As one of my top three priorities for OQHYA would be to either reduce or cease doing Zoom calls for meetings. I know this may be a controversial idea, but I believe Zoom meetings do not increase attendance and makes it more difficult to get any substantive business done during meetings. Members naturally have more distractions when they are at home, and it is much more difficult to meet and interact with new people virtually. Some of the best things about OQHYA is how information is distributed to all our youth and the opportunities to interact with new people. I recognize that Zoom is convenient, but Zoom is unable to offer a full experience as an in person meeting.

My top 3 priorities for the Ohio youth is to do better in all the contests at the youth world show, get more kids to come in person for the meetings, and to do more fundraising. At the 2023 world show, Ohio was third place in the scrapbook contest. I am wanting to do even better next year and get more people to send in photos and be apart of the scrapbook. Most of the year we no more than 10 kids in person for meetings. Most have been on Zoom; I want to get those kids to come in person and participate in the meetings. This year, I think we need to do more fundraising. In 2023, Ohio took 12 kids out to Texas for the Youth Excellance Seminar. With more fundraising, we would be able to take even more out.

What will you contribute? I will contribute to the Ohio youth by helping with NYATT outfits and preparation again. I will also get people more involved with extra activities. I was on the 2023 Ohio judging team and realized how many kids don’t know how much they are missing out on by not being involved outside of the meetings.

I participated on the planning committee for the Youth Bash that is held during Congress, and volunteered along with other members to set up and tear down for the event.

What will you contribute? I want to be involved and help as much as possible. I will help with committees and group activities and I will jump in wherever I am needed. As well as being a good role model, because I believe if you want to be a part of something like this, where people are going to know who you are, you need to be someone respectful and you need to be a good representation of this organization. I would also like to help encourage more people to join OQHYA, because there are lots of great opportunities through this organization that people don’t know about.

1. The first one would be making OQHYA more welcoming to new members. When I first joined, it was not as welcoming as I hoped it would be. Because I have not always been a part of the Quarter Horse world, nobody knew me, so I wasn’t welcomed in the way new members should be. So my number one priority would be to make it a more welcoming environment to new members. 2. My second priority would be to make OQHYA more open to non-traditional classes. I think one way to do that is by having contesting classes offered at all OQHA shows, especially NYATT and AQHYA Wold qualifying shows. 3. My third priority would be trying to get more classes added to the NYATT. I feel it should be more inclusive to those who don’t show the traditional classes. I would really like to see halter and pole bending added to the schedule.

Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association OAQHA hosted their annual pancake breakfast during the All American Quarter Horse Congress, raising $6,000 for Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Thank you to all who stopped by for pancakes and to those who sponsored the event. Sponsors of the event received free pancake delivery on the grounds, while other attendees gathered in the Voinovich to enjoy breakfast!

Many Ohio Amateur saw success at the AAQHC and the AQHA World Show, representing the strength and depth of OAQHA. Ohio Amateurs who partook in the OAQHA engagement incentive program received a Congress parking pass or a monetary stipend. The program required attendance at 2 board meetings hosted via Zoom, and 4 hours of work at either the Little Buckeye or the pancake breakfast. As we close out the year from a successful 2023 Little Buckeye horse show, we begin our planning and preparation for the 2024 Little Buckeye, which will be held at Garwood Arena July 11-14. We hope to see you there!

Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association Congress 2023 is a wrap and the youth of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association made their mark! Our NYATT team finished 3rd out of over 40 teams in this year’s competition and we had members compete in every class offered for the event with many great placings.

Also, we hosted the Youth Bash the evening before the completion of youth weekend and the theme this year was Haunted Cowboy Carnival. The dance was well attended by both the 12 & Under and 13 & Over crowd. There was plenty of games, treats and dancing along with spooky and fun decorations. Eastern Ohio Quarter Horse Association To say that the EOQHA NYATT team had a great All American Quarter Horse Congress would be an understatement! Our youth team had some incredible performances, with Piper Kiphart winning the NYATT Barrels with her horse Aprils Infamous Fire, Gracie Stingle being third in the NYATT Reining with her horse Little Rosy Step, Claire Goff with Lazy Lopin in Lace placing 9th in NYATT Western Pleasure, and Molly Mullady placing 15th in the inaugural NYATT Ranch Riding with her horse Gunmans Flashy Kid. Speaking of outstanding rides, Cheyenne Brand competed in a tough horsemanship class with her horse Zig Me a Kiss. Addison Leonard with her horse KM Dont Flash Me and Kaitlyn Purssord with her horse The Kissing Code competed in a deep equitation class with some outstanding rides to help round out our great team. And Piper Kiphart and Infamous April had an impressive showing in the barrels. These results put us in 4th place overall in the 2023 NYATT Division II standings! Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Association Our annual awards banquet to be held in conjunction with the OQHA banquet on February 3, 2024 at the Hilton Downtown, Columbus. Our hospitality room will open at 3:00 to pick up year-end awards, check out the youth Chinese Auction, or visit with old friends. NOQHA will be offering pay online memberships for 2024. The SOQHA NYATT Team had a great Congress. The team placed 12th in Division I. We are proud of how well all the youth did. Our top placings; Kami Kile 5th Barrel Racing Kaylee Olds 6th Showmanship Kaylee Olds 11th Horsemanship Ryan Mau 15th Reining We want to thank our team sponsors: Rod’s, Easy Equine Essentials, CR Ranchwear, and HAALA Denim. There will be a December meeting on Wednesday December 13, location TBD. 6pm adults, 7pm youth. There will be drinks and appetizers provided. This meeting will include nominations for the 2024 Board of Directors for both the Adult & Youth Associations. The youth will also be accepting donations for a local animal shelter. Appreciated items are -Pet food or litter -Newspapers, which they can shred into bedding for the animals -Towels and blankets for any and all dog grooming needs -Plastic bags to pick up dogs waste (not all shelters accept them, and they mustn’t have any holes) -Heating pads for sick/injured animals -Gently used pet carriers, leashes, collars, bowls -Household items like bleach, dish soap, paper towels, Kleenex, zip-lock bags, disinfectant wipes, powdered laundry detergent, garbage bags, mops, brooms, sponges We look forward to seeing everyone this show season The Challenge February 23-25, the Champions Center in Springfield, Ohio The Pre Madness May 2-5, WEC in Wilmington, Ohio The Madness May 7-12, WEC in Wilmington, Ohio

Ohio State Buckskin Association The Ohio State Buckskin Horse Association held a 35th anniversary celebration along with honoring its 2023 year-end award winners during a banquet on November 11. This special event was held at the Ohio Quarter Horse Association’s headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Along with current and past OSBA members and guests, 2023 International Buckskin Horse Association president Pat Osenga, as well as IBHA staff members Rick Kurzeja and Deanna O’Keefe, along with Deanna’s husband, Mike O’Keefe, attended the event. 2023 Year-End Award Winners OSBA presented year-end award champions in nine divisions. Three memorial trophies are awarded annually by the association, including: George Anders Memorial High Point Halter – Secret Link, Kali Blackburn George Anders Memorial High Point Youth Halter – Midnite Review, Makenna Schleisser Deb Mathews Memorial High Point Lead Line – Joscelyn Hall OSBA also awarded Trail Riding members who log their riding hours throughout the year. Ann Frederick logged more than 100 hours to win the high point award for 2023. 2024 Officers Named During a membership meeting held prior to the banquet, OSBA named Brenda Alliman as 2024 president, along with Patty McKinley, vice president, Nancy Heink, secretary, and Heather Nigg, treasurer. About OSBA The Ohio State Buckskin Association was formed at a meeting on July 17, 1987, and incorporated on January 1, 1988, as a charter association with the International Buckskin Horse Association. Buckskin activity in the state actually predated OSBA with the formation of the former Buckeye Buckskin Horse Association in 1972, bringing the state’s buckskin activity to more than 50 years in total. The mission of the Ohio Buckskin Horse Association is to preserve and promote the ownership, breeding and competition of buckskin, dun and grulla horses in Ohio and throughout the Midwest. OSBA has been an alliance member of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association since 2004. OSBA will host two IBHA-sanctioned shows in 2024. The Buckskin Memorial Classic will be held on May 18-19 at Bullen Equestrian Center at the Preble County Fairgrounds in Eaton, Ohio, and the Red, White and Buckskin Show will take place July 6-7 at the Champions Center at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ohio. Ohio NYATT Teams Represent at Congress The world’s largest National Youth Activity Team Tournament (NYATT), sponsored by National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) Smart Points and hosted by the All American Quarter Horse Congress, is a significant event for youth involved in the Quarter Horse industry. Bringing together 296 youth from across North America and representing 43 different state and regional Quarter Horse associations, the 2023 NYATT culminated Sunday, October 15. Each team may consist of 1-16 riders, with no more than two members competing in each of the eight NYATT classes: Barrel Racing, Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Under Saddle, Ranch Riding. Reining, Showmanship and Western Pleasure. To determine overall team standings, points are awarded for each individual’s efforts in every class, with first place receiving 10 points, second place nine points, and so on. In the Division I, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association NYATT team claimed third place against tough competition. Also in Division I, Ohio Michigan Indiana QHA finished in 6th place, Northern Ohio QHA placed 11th, and Southern Ohio QHA received 12th place. In Division II, the Eastern Ohio QHA team took home fourth place. Headley Two-Part Ranch Series Winners Owners of open and non pro working western rail stakes horses competiting at both the All American Quarter Horse Congress and the Nutrena AQHA and Adequan Select World show in Oklahoma City, Okla. were once again earned trophy saddles and a portion of $10,000 in added money, thanks to Headley Quarter Horses, as part of the Two-Part Ranch Series. For the second year in a row, the highest cumulative point earner was Sumac GunnaBeFlashy, a 2017 chestnut gelding owner by AQHA Professional Horsewoman Leslie Lange of Greeley, Colo. Sumac GunnaBeFlashy is sired by GunnaTrashYa and out of Chics Graceful Whiz and was bred by Donald Sobey of Trenton, Nova Scotia. He was shown by AQHA Professional Horseman Bud Lyon and earned $5,000 and a custom Harris Leather ranch-style saddle for Lange. Placing second in the series was Double Tapn, owned by Dan Fox of Weatherford, Texas and shown by Katie Fox. The 2018 sorrel gelding was bred by Kiera Johnson of Broken Arrow, Okla. and is sired by Lil Joe Cash and out of Whiz N Snap. Double Tapn and Fox earned $3,000. Taking home third in the series was Xtra Magic Doctor, a 2014 palomino stallion owned by Eric Mendrysa of Boerne, Texas. The stallion was bred by Cache Performance Horses LLC of Basalt, Colo. and is sired by Shiners Voodoo Dr and out of Aleena Starlight. Shown by Curtis Reynolds, the pair earned $2,000. In the two-part non pro series, the high point winner was Always Do, owned and shown by Dana Avila of Scottsdale, Ariz. The 2018 gray gelding is sired by Cat Man Do and out of Greyt Little Step, bred by W.T. Waggoner Estate of Vernon, Texas. Avila received a custom Harris Leather ranch-style saddle.
