Dear Alumni and Friends, On Saturday, April 14, many members of the Ohio Northern family gathered in King Horn to celebrate success and make history. The celebration marked the incredibly successful completion of The Campaign for Ohio Northern University’s Tomorrow with results that far exceeded expectations and rewrote Northern’s fundraising record book.

Executive Assistant to the President William L. Robinson, BSEd ’61, ACIT ’71, ACIT ’89, Hon. D. ’05, H of F ’05 Vice President for Financial Affairs (Interim) Roger Young

Oscar Mifsud, BSBA ’70, ACIT ’09, national campaign chairman, gave a passionate, informative and inspirational presentation during which he documented the results and announced that total gifts and pledges were just shy of $110 million, nearly $10 million ahead of goal. The campaign will officially close on May 31 well ahead of $110 million, making it the largest fundraising effort in the University’s history.

Another highlight of the evening was publically recognizing Oscar for providing superb leadership, clear vision and steadfast direction to this campaign. His efforts contributed significantly to achieving historic fundraising results, results that will serve to advance the University for years to come. Judy (Jacobs) Mifsud, BSEd ’70, ACIT ’09, was also recognized for the supporting role that she played throughout the campaign, not only as helpful and encouraging spouse, but also as passionate and generous ONU alumnae. Many others were acknowledged individually, followed by a collective expression of thanks to the 21,000 donors who made the event possible. Reaching an ambitious goal is always a great achievement, especially during challenging times for fundraising when other colleges and universities delayed, deferred or even discontinued their campaigns. As such, our success is even more spectacular. Because of these impressive and historic results, this campaign already is having an amazing impact on Northern and will continue to do so well into the future. The impact of the campaign on students is transformational due to 72 additional scholarships that will make ONU more affordable to more students and to several new and renovated facilities that create the spaces for teaching, learning and mentoring. The impact of the campaign on Northern’s reputation is significant. When the campaign began in 2006, the only national ranking the University as a whole received was in U.S. News & World Report, which ranked us fifth in the Midwest. Today, in 2012, the University is listed prominently in seven additional national rankings, including those curated by Princeton Review and Washington Monthly, and we are now rated second in the Midwest by U.S. News. The impact of the campaign on the Ohio Northern family is uplifting. Every alumnus, every parent, every friend, every trustee and every ONU employee that contributed to this campaign did something important. All of those gift mattered, and they are making a difference.

And finally, the impact of the campaign on our future is motivational. The success of the campaign serves as a catalyst for a better tomorrow; it fuels the engine of opportunity and promise that propels us forward to our next milestone – Ohio Northern’s sesquicentennial in 2021. While there is much to do between now and when we reach the University’s 150th birthday, the success of the campaign puts a strong wind at our back, with a force familiar to all who’ve had the wind behind while walking across the Tundra. And, ultimately, the success of the campaign demonstrates what can happen for the love of Northern. Many thanks to everyone who participated. Gratefully,

Dan DiBiasio President

contents Greetings from ONU, Each year, as the academic year comes to a close, it is bittersweet, as I am sad to see the students who we have all known and worked with for so many years “leave” their Northern home. At the same time, however, they are now joining the Ohio Northern family as alumni of your wonderful alma mater. And while this is, in some sense, an ending, it is also the beginning of so many new aspects in their lives. This wonderful group of new graduates is now employed, or soon will be, or they are preparing to attend graduate schools. They’ve also joined a phenomenal group of nearly 30,000 ONU alumni and are able to attend alumni events and join the B.E.A.R.S. program. If you attend an alumni event any time this summer and you see a “’12” on a nametag, please be sure to give a special welcome to these recent graduates.

Inspiring Faith

aith inspired Henry Solomon Lehr, ONU’s founder and first president, throughout his life’s journey. From his humble beginnings as a weaver’s son through his evolution into a wise scholar and teacher, he relied on God’s guidance. One of Lehr’s students once wrote: “It seems to me now that the lessons Dr. Lehr taught me were not so much algebra, Latin, mental philosophy, or any other particular study that was on the curriculum; but the deepest lessons which I learned were work, sympathy, human kindness, and these I got from his wonderful example. He had built around him an institution which was composed of the spirit of himself.” Indeed, Lehr infused Ohio Northern with the simple values that were the foundation of his Christian faith – dedication, kindness, compassion and service. In doing so, he left a great legacy, for these values not only resonate with students from all faith traditions, but also have endured for nearly a century and a half.

4

In 1899, troubled with financial and operational difficulties, Lehr and his associates sold ONU to the Central Ohio Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (now known as the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church). This transfer of ownership made ONU a church-related institution and marked the beginning of a long and harmonious relationship between the University and the United Methodist Church. It also underpinned the role of “morality and religion” in ONU’s educational mission. Following Lehr, the next five ONU presidents were Methodist clergyman. Dr. Samuel Lewis Meyer, inaugurated in 1965, became the first laymen to run the University since Lehr. Like his predecessors, he promoted a values-

Faith of our Founder based education. In his inaugural address he defined ONU’s mission as giving students “roots and wings” – the firm roots of sound learning and the wings of spiritual values. On Meyer’s watch, ONU built the Heterick Memorial Library and the Wesley Center, which includes the English Chapel. At long last, religious programming found a permanent home on campus. A century after ONU’s founding – on April 17, 1971 – the ONU community held a dedication ceremony for the University’s first “real” chapel, complete with a five-ton tower and 50-bell carillon.

The English Chapel’s proximity to the library, both in the heart of campus, symbolized the University’s dual purpose of learning and faith. A metal sculpture, the “Flame of Unity,” stands on the mall midway between the two buildings. The sculpture bears the words of John Wesley, who laid the foundation for the Methodist Church in England and America: “Let us unite the two so long divided – knowledge and vital piety.” In his commemorative speech for the sculpture, Meyer said, “Placed where they are, the words of Wesley direct attention to the library, the House of Knowledge, and to the sanctuary, the House of God.” “Chapel” – the name for the University’s regular worship service – enjoys a storied tradition at ONU. During Lehr’s days, students were required to attend chapel every weekday morning. Daily chapel services continued until 1931, when they were reduced to three a week. By 1949, just two services took place each week.

Mandatory chapel was seldom popular among the student body. In fact, some students went to great lengths to avoid attending chapel. In the early 1900s, creative students occasionally tried to sabotage chapel by coating the seats with sticky substances, like molasses. And in the 1960s, some rebellious students made a sport of doctoring their punch cards, which were used to track attendance. In 1967, ONU’s board of trustees gave the campus chaplain permission to try voluntary chapel; the change was made permanent in 1969. The Northern Review declared: “Strong traditions have been severely shaken. Requirements for attendance at chapel, which were woven into the very foundation of Ohio Northern nearly a century ago, have been terminated.” Interestingly, the move toward voluntary chapel helped revitalize the religious life program on campus. Students felt empowered to develop more creative and meaningful chapel programs. During this same timeframe, students began forming religious outreach groups, such as the Wesley Players. While mandatory chapel is relegated to the annals of history, numerous worship services, outreach programs, service learning projects and prayer group meetings take place on campus each year. These faithbased activities range from annual spring break Habitat for Humanity trips to vocal performances in the African-American gospel music tradition, and from the Catholic Mass held in Chapel twice each month to daily and Friday prayers (Salah) in Clark Hall for Muslim students. Lehr might be surprised at the change and diversity in religious life evident on campus today. But surely he also would be pleased to see that the values he modeled – dedication, kindness, compassion and service – are alive and well and that students continue to discover truths and grow in faith while at ONU.

An excerpt from a sermon delivered in the English Chapel on Founder’s Day by Dan DiBiasio, president of Ohio Northern University. I find it truly remarkable and incredibly inspirational to know that our great University evolved from the power of one: one single vision of one single man. And, I am grateful that his faith in God served as a sustaining presence in his life. Both his educational vision and his enduring faith are important to recall, for they exemplify a person who let his life speak. H.S. Lehr was an exceptionally devout Christian. A measure of his love of God and his passion for education is that, after only two years in Ada, he taught Sunday school classes in each one of the local Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian churches. The Sabbath was not a day of rest for him, but rather a day to share the word of God and to educate. From his first day as a schoolteacher, Lehr began each new class day at 8:30 a.m. with a reading from the Bible and a short prayer. But within about two weeks, the school board members told him that some of the school patrons objected to these devotions, whereupon he proposed that school open at 8 a.m., but those who objected to the devotions need not come until 8:30. Clear-minded in his faith and resourceful in the face of conflict – no wonder he was an effective University president! I am glad that our University is heir to Lehr’s legacy. It is a legacy of faith and action, of vision and passion. I believe it demonstrates that future greatness here truly lies in our ability to come together, unite and be in community as a singular institution. We are proud of what H.S. Lehr started 141 years ago. But far more important is that we are now responsible for what Lehr started 141 years ago. And as responsible heirs to his legacy, we must be faithful to our founder and, in so doing, be faithful to our God. 5

h aw Gospel Ensemble celebrates 25 years This spring, The Ohio Northern University Gospel Ensemble celebrated 25 years of sharing the gospel through song and testimony. On April 29, alumni members joined current members of the ensemble for an uplifting concert of praise in the English Chapel. The group performed mostly original music composed by Bishop Terence M. Sykes of Lynchburg, Va., who has mentored the Gospel Ensemble throughout the years. Adriane Thompson-Bradshaw, vice president for student affairs, founded the Gospel

ONU alumni attend national UMC conference Three Ohio Northern University alumni served as delegates at the United Methodist Church General Conference 2012, which took place April 24-May 4 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla. The three delegates 6 were Gregory Gross, BM ’00, clinical manager of the HIV Testing and Prevention Program at Center on Halsted in Chicago; Anna (Barrett) Guillozet, BA ’08, associate pastor at the North Broadway United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio; and Angela “Ang” Hart, BA ’07, director of youth and young adult ministries for the Detroit Conference of the United Methodist Church in Detroit, Mich.

Ensemble in 1987 and has served as its director since the beginning. “The message and music have remained consistent,” she says. “We have always performed music in the African-American tradition, although the group has included Japanese, African, Latino, and Caucasian students.” Members learn music by rote, without sheet music. The Gospel Ensemble performs at local churches and on campus each year. “Going out to the various churches gives students the chance to be ambassadors for ONU,” says Thompson-Bradshaw.

MacDonald becomes University Chaplain The Rev. David MacDonald, an ordained United Methodist minister, will become the Ohio Northern’s chaplain in July.

Ada Friends impacts local community Ada Friends positively impacts local children, their families and school, say co-directors Carlie Trenga, a fourth-year pharmacy student from Brookfield, Ohio, and Jerrod Amstutz, a junior youth ministry major from Bluffton, Ohio.

The mentorship program pairs ONU students (“Bigs”) with Ada Elementary School students (“Littles”). In the 201112 school year, the program made 75 quality matches. The Big/Little pairs meet once a week for activities on campus or in the community. Each month, the Ada Friends staff organizes an event to bring the matches together to grow, learn and have fun.

Previously, MacDonald served as pastor at Niles United Methodist Church in Niles, Ohio, and at Marshallville Easton United Methodist Charge (a two-point charge consisting of two churches) in Marshallville, Ohio. He received a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Mount Union College and a master’s of divinity from Methodist Theological School of Ohio. He is working to complete a Doctor of Ministry in spiritual direction at GarrettEvangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill.

environment – you name it. College students seem to be looking for something that makes sense and is constant. Faith can provide that for many,” he says.

MacDonald believes college students are looking for constancy, ways to make a difference and connections with others. “There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world today – the economy, wars, terrorism, the

Approachability, openness to new ideas and a passion for connecting with people are the strengths he’ll bring to the position of ONU chaplain, says MacDonald. “I love relating the life of faith to everyday life.”

“It is truly amazing how these relationships grow throughout the year and to see how much of an impact one organization can have on the ONU campus and the Ada Elementary School,” says Trenga.

T For Deborah “Deb” Light, BA ’00, faith and service are intrinsically linked. As an ONU student, she spent spring breaks building homes for Habitat for Humanity. Today, Habitat encompasses her life’s work. “I’m a firm believer in the Social Gospel,” she says. “And Habitat fits this desire I have to live out my faith and help people.” Three experiences shaped Light’s development when she majored in religious studies at ONU: singing with Gospel Ensemble, serving on the residence life staff and volunteering with Habitat. “All three proved to be wonderful outlets that helped me to grow as a person and develop leadership skills,” she says. “Habitat ended up being the path I followed.” Light is the volunteer director for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Columbus. In this role, she oversees approximately 5,500 volunteers, with responsibility for volunteer recruitment, scheduling and recognition. “I meet so many interesting people with a wide array

of personalities and backgrounds,” she says. “They volunteer for different reasons, but all end up feeling like they’ve received far more than they’ve given.” Habitat for Humanity of Greater Columbus constructs around 20 homes each year for hardworking, low-income families who can’t afford a decent home. Most of the families live in substandard conditions, paying inflated rent for overcrowded dwellings or buildings that aren’t up to code. The families are carefully screened and put in a minimum of 200-250 hours of sweat equity, which includes helping to build their house and taking home-ownership classes. In return, they receive a beautiful new home with an affordable mortgage. Although Light has attended hundreds of dedication ceremonies for new Habitat homes, each one is special and powerful, she says. “It never gets old,” she explains. “I love to see the excitement on the faces of the family members and watch the kids race around their new backyard. I see God working in the staff, volunteers and families, and it reminds me of why I am here.”

Abby (Marvin) Auman, BA ’03, associate pastor at Strongsville United Methodist Church in Cleveland, journeys with her flock through life’s ups and downs. She helps church members celebrate joyful times such as baptism and marriage, and comforts and guides them during sorrowful times such as illness, divorce or death. “People allow pastors into their lives at very sacred times,” she says. “I feel blessed to be able to represent Christ and walk with them.” Auman first thought about a career in ministry when she was in high school. But she didn’t publicly voice her interest in becoming a pastor until she was a student at Ohio Northern. “I encountered wise and spiritual people who provided guidance,” she says. “I had plenty of opportunities to try out the call from God.” At ONU, Auman coordinated Ada Friends and served on the Chapel staff. After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, she helped plan the campus’s memorial service and led the congregation in song. Auman met her husband, Seth Auman, BA ’02, at ONU. Seth also became a United Methodist pastor and is currently pursuing a degree in pastoral counseling. The couple has a delightful 2-yearold son, Noah.

K

Auman finds fulfillment in pastoral ministry. Every day brings challenges, but also opportunities to share Christ’s message through worship, preaching, ministry groups, counseling, hospital visits and more. Some days, her plans are waylaid by a phone call bringing news of a crisis, such as a sudden illness, fatal car accident or suicide attempt. “I’ve seen the dark side of human existence, but my faith is what keeps me going,” says Auman. “I can see God’s hand at work, even during difficult times.” This summer, Auman will become the pastor at Greensburg United Methodist Church in Green, Ohio, serving a congregation of approximately 600. She’s looking forward to the new assignment. “I’ve been called by God to this work, and I love it,” she says. “Sometimes, I can’t believe I get paid to do it.”

Katherine “Katie” Feldhues, BA ’10, believes in the power of strong families. Guided by her faith, she is on a mission to help families succeed. “I encourage family wholeness, focusing on young people, because the family unit is powerful and represents the future,” she says. Raised Roman Catholic, Feldhues knew at a young age that she wanted to work with youth and share her faith. “I faced trials in high school that made me realize that being a believer was more important than money, or being the best swimmer, or being prom queen,” she says. At ONU, Feldhues expanded her knowledge of faith and religion while preparing for a career in social services. She took advantage of service opportunities, such as planning Chapel and coordinating Ada Friends, to hone her leadership and organizational skills.

After graduation, she embarked on a sixmonth internship with the U.S. Department of Defense, working at Fort Campbell in Kentucky to enhance the quality of programs offered to the children of military personnel. She then took a position coordinating a mentorship program for at-risk youth at the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati. In her work, she encountered dysfunction and brokenness in poor and wealthy families. She witnessed the negative impact on individuals and society when families are unable to show love, support or respect. In these cases, faith offers the path to healing, she says. “When you can focus on Christ’s love, and how that looks, and how you can embody that in your family, it can light the way,” she explains. Recognizing her leadership potential, Feldhues enrolled at Wright State University to obtain a master’s degree in public administration, with a focus on nonprofit management. She continues to be active in Girl Scouts, the Wright State Office of Service Learning and Civic Engagement and other service organizations while she completes her degree. “I’m not sure where I’ll end up after graduation, but I know it will be a familyoriented ministry,” she says. “I’ve put my trust in God, and He’ll lead me to where I need to be.” Gregory Gross, BM ’00, views himself as a bridge connecting the Church with the world. An ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church, he’s courageously bridging one of the most contentious issues of our times – homosexuality. In Chicago and Zimbabwe, Gross shares God’s message of love and hope with HIV-positive individuals. And across the U.S., he preaches a message of tolerance and understanding to United Methodist congregations. “This is how I seek to follow Christ in my life,” he says. “It’s not always an easy road, but it’s one I feel called to travel.”

Gross admits that most days, his work is difficult and emotionally draining. But he knows he is doing God’s work. “This is where I’ve been led, and this is where I can make a difference,” he says.

E R NE R

In his work, he witnesses firsthand the pain and suffering of people struggling with a devastating disease and, worse, with feelings of alienation and shame. He’s counseled destitute teenagers living on the streets because their parents kicked them out of house for being gay or transgender. On trips to Africa, he’s prayed with Zimbabweans, living as outcasts, who have been told they are sick because they sinned. “People with HIV are often modern-day lepers. They need someone to bring them Christ’s message of love. They need to know they are children of God,” he says.

S CH

Gross never imagined he’d find himself at the divisive intersection of God, sex and church. He came to ONU intent on becoming a high school band director. ONU’s nurturing environment, however, helped him to discern his call to ministry. After seminary, where he earned a master’s of divinity degree, he served as a pastor for seven years. He then obtained a master’s degree in social work to hone his gift for listening and counseling. He started as a psychotherapy intern at the Center on Halsted and rose through the ranks to a management position.

HA N

S

Gross is the clinical manager of HIV testing and prevention at the Center on Halsted in Chicago, the Midwest’s most comprehensive community center for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. He also is a deacon at Berry United Methodist Church in Chicago, a missionary for Project Tariro in Zimbabwe, and an outspoken challenger of the current teachings of the United Methodist Book of Discipline concerning the LGBT community. He will do his advocacy work as a clergy delegate to the 2012 UM General Conference.

Hans Scherner, JD ’79, is a litigation attorney and Lutheran pastor. While the two roles may seem incongruent, they actually mesh together well, says Scherner. “In both roles I use the same knowledge and skill set, and I have the opportunity to be there for people.” Scherner received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and went on to study theology, eventually obtaining a Master of Divinity from Wittenberg University. He lived in Washington, D.C., for a number of years, holding several ministry-related positions, before pursuing his dream of a becoming an attorney. Attending ONU’s Pettit College of Law proved to be one of the best experiences of his life, says Scherner. He forged strong bonds with his professors, especially former college dean Dr. Eugene Hanson, Hon D. ’86. When Hanson died in 2005, Scherner preached at his funeral. For the last 33 years, Scherner has specialized in medical malpractice cases. He is managing partner at Scherner, Hanson & Cornwell LLC in Columbus, Ohio, representing clients with serious injuries and health problems due to medical mistakes. His clients are often overwhelmed and vulnerable due to emotional and

financial stresses. Scherner doesn’t just try to win cases for his clients, he prays for them. “I am often an attorney and a friend,” he says. “I want to be there for my clients at a time when they feel they are all alone.” Over the years, Scherner has continued to preach and serve as interim pastor at several Lutheran churches. Currently, he is pastor at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sulphur Springs, Ohio, serving a congregation of approximately 150. Ministering to a congregation and practicing law requires a huge outpouring of time and energy. But Scherner feels restless when he’s away from church work, and at peace doing what God has called him to do. “Jesus has always been there for me,” he says. “To me, Jesus means life.”

Retirement didn’t slow down these ONU professors and administrators who continue to share their talents with the University they love.

Roger Young

He came to work at 6 a.m. most days, and even worked Saturday mornings, but he never minded. “There’s a difference between a job and a career,” he says. “A career is something you love, and it isn’t defined by hours or days.”

to his relief, pressing issues and deadlines are a thing of the past. And, his flexible schedule gives him time to visit his grandchildren, sing in his church’s choir, co-coordinate the Ada

dean in 1985, a position he held for nine years before stepping down for health reasons. He then taught five more years and retired in 1999.

McCurdy’s greatest joy was working with students. He especially enjoyed his contact with international students, who gave him a richer appreciation and understanding of different cultures. He felt blessed to be able to help students succeed in college and in their careers. “That’s what God put us all on the Earth for: to help others achieve their goals.”

Robert McCurdy, BSPh ’65, Hon. D. ’96, former assistant dean of the Raabe College of Pharmacy, occupies a new space at ONU. “It’s off Main Street and on 2nd Avenue,” he says, with a broad grin. In his second-floor office in the Robertson-Evans Pharmacy building, McCurdy is removed from the main action, but still in the game. And he couldn’t be happier. McCurdy retired this past August after 15 years of service to ONU. He’s a larger-than-life figure in the College of Pharmacy, beloved by students, alumni and colleagues for his enthusiasm and genuine caring. During his entire career, which included high-level positions in corporate America, McCurdy worked hard and gave his best. At ONU, he spent his weekends and evenings supporting pharmacy students by attending their extracurricular activities.

When he reached retirement age, McCurdy was ready for a slower pace. He saw some members of his peer group struggling with health issues and realized he’d better take time to “stop and smell the roses.”

Continuing to work at ONU is a bonus in life... But McCurdy still wanted to contribute to ONU’s success. So when Dr. Jon Sprague, dean of the Raabe College of Pharmacy, asked him to continue part-time as assistant to the dean, he eagerly accepted. He describes his new ONU role as “different and joyful.” He cultivates relationships with alumni and corporations and tackles special projects. Much

Men’s Prayer Fellowship, teach a class for the College of Business Administration, and travel with his wife. “I see nothing but an upside to retirement,” says McCurdy. “Continuing to work at ONU is a bonus in life, because there is nothing I have a greater passion for than ONU and pharmacy.”

Bruce Burton, ACIT ’94, Hon. D. ’08, former dean of the Smull College of Engineering, thrives on intellectual stimulation and new experiences. That’s why he’s still working at ONU more than a decade after he officially retired. Burton spent 40 years in the College of Engineering. He started as an instructor in mechanical engineering in 1958, chaired the Department of Mechanical Engineering for 20 years, and became college

I’m not ready to do nothing. Possessing an outgoing and genuine personality, Burton devoted himself to his students. He went the extra mile to help struggling students succeed. He especially enjoyed teaching because he got to know his students on a personal level. He could “look them in the eye” and gauge whether or not they understood the material. When he was dean, Burton led efforts to increase the number of international students in the College of Engineering. He believed ONU students needed to experience cultural diversity on campus to have a well-rounded education. 11

Burton’s enthusiasm for international programs made him an ideal candidate to help in international admissions after he retired. “I was asked to help out and I thought, ‘Sure, I can do that for a little while,’” he says. “And that was 13 years ago.”

I’m learning new things, and that’s exciting to me.

During this time, he has recruited more than 200 international students from nine different countries and helped them to adjust to life in Ada. He brought the Sakae Institute of Study Abroad to ONU’s campus, which prepares around 25 Japanese and Chinese students each summer for their studies in the U.S. His retirement years have been greatly enriched by the many international students he’s encountered, he says. “I’ve learned a lot about other cultures and values systems, and the bottom line is that people are people,” he explains. “It’s been a joy working with these students.” Burton’s part-time, flexible schedule in international admissions gives him an opportunity to travel and enjoy life. He and his wife, Jane, have visited Russia, China, Kenya, Europe, Egypt, Israel, and Vietnam 12 in recent years. Burton doesn’t plan to “retire” for a second time anytime soon. “I’m not ready to do nothing,” he says. “The older I get, the more I realize that being involved is important to your quality of life. You need to keep your mind and your body active.”

Lippert has several writing projects lined up, too. She plans to write about the town-gown relations between ONU and Ada throughout history and to pen her life story for her daughter. “It could take forever,” she says, reflecting on her busy schedule. “We’ll see.”

leader. “My overall purpose was to provide students with the best education possible,” she says. “I tried to help people get things done that would benefit the University.”

Anne Lippert, former vice president of academic affairs, retired in August 2009 without any definite plans for the future. “I just knew I was old, and it was time for fresh blood,” she says with a laugh. It didn’t take long, however, for her schedule to fill. Lippert enjoyed a long and storied career at Northern. She began teaching French at ONU in 1971, served as chair of the foreign languages department, president of the faculty union, and various roles in academic affairs before officially becoming vice president in 1992. As vice president of academic affairs, she had responsibility for all academic programs, personnel issues, institutional research, athletics and the registrar’s office. Known for wise and capable leadership, Lippert viewed herself as a servant

After retiring, Lippert sought out opportunities to share her institutional expertise with colleges and universities looking for interim administrators. She became interim provost at St. Joseph College in West Hartford, Conn., a position that was supposed to last six months, but stretched out to 18 months. She then returned to Ada and began teaching English to Saudi Arabian women who moved here with their children and husbands, who are Saudi prison officers participating in the two-year Prison Management Certificate Program at Ohio Northern. Working with the Saudi women has had a profound impact on Lippert, challenging her preconceptions about women and the Middle Eastern culture. “These women took a giant leap of faith in coming here,” she says. “I have been so impressed by their sophistication, courage and hard work. I am enjoying teaching again. But I’m learning new things as well, and that is exciting to me.”

John Berg is passionate about being an educator and preparing teachers. And when you love your work, retirement just doesn’t hold any appeal, he says. “When you’ve been active all your life and fulfilled by what you do, it’s not easy to walk away and leave it all behind.” Berg retired in 1992 after 30 years in the Ohio public school system. He spent five years in the classroom and 25 years in administration, serving as a high school principal and then school superintendent for several different school districts.

Berg “failed” at retirement... He was “climbing the walls.” A few months into retirement, Berg accepted a full-time position at Ohio Northern, teaching methods classes and supervising student teachers for the education department. “I thought I would be here for four or five years, but ended up staying for 18 years,” he comments.

Berg retired from ONU in 2010, and he and his wife, Joanne, moved to South Carolina for rest and relaxation. But once again, Berg “failed” at retirement. “I was climbing the walls,” he laughs. “We also really missed our family and friends.” Then Berg received a phone call from Catherine Albrecht, dean of College of Arts & Sciences, asking him to serve as interim chair of the education department for the 2011-12 school year. He responded with a resounding “yes!” Berg will continue in this role until ONU finds a permanent replacement. When he retires for a third time, Berg plans to stay close to Ada and the connections he’s made. “ONU has become a very special place to me,” he says.

Young first retired from ONU in 1998 after a 34-year career as a legendary accounting professor and a stint as vice president of finance from 1990-93. Two years into retirement, however, he was “flat-out bored” and missed the students. “My son called me one day and asked me what I was doing,” he recalls. “When I told him I was cleaning out the hall closet, he told me, ‘Dad, you need to go back to work!’” Young taught at Bluffton University for eight years before returning to Northern in 2008 for the chance to teach his granddaughter. He retired again in spring 2011 but was called back to duty last September to serve as the interim vice president of financial affairs. For the past

Berg developed a deep affinity for ONU and its personalized education model. Professors care about students and point them in the right direction, he says. And ONU students are intelligent, hardworking and well-intentioned. “The students I’ve encountered are high-caliber individuals with their heads on right,” he says. “They really want to make a difference as teachers.” After three decades in public education, Berg knows a teaching career isn’t an easy road. He passes on his accumulated knowledge to ONU students, sharing advice on how to land a job in a tight market and how to achieve results in the classroom. “I believe in the importance and significance of the role of teachers in society,” he says. “On a daily basis, teachers have the opportunity to truly impact lives.”

Known for his infectious sense of humor, Young endears himself to everyone he encounters. He truly cares about students and colleagues and even prays for them. As a professor, he always had time to help students who were struggling or who needed career guidance. “I always thought that I taught students, not accounting,” he says.

Two years into retirement he was “flat-out bored.” Many alumni remember Young for his interesting lectures and unwavering enthusiasm for the accounting field. In one class, he became so animated talking about FIFO and LIFO accounting techniques that he lost his balance and fell off a three-foot platform right into the lap of a young lady sitting in the front row.

Roger Young, ACIT ’98, has been successful at many things in life, but retirement isn’t one of them. “I flunked retirement twice,” he jokes. “Maybe the third time will be the charm.”

nine months, he’s overseen the controller’s office, business services, risk management, budgeting, human resources and The Inn. At 75 years old, he hasn’t missed a day’s work at his interim post, even for cataract surgery.

This fall, Young will retire for a third time when the newly hired vice president of financial affairs comes on board. Young plans to play some golf and “maybe look for another job,” he says with a grin. “What can I say? I just like getting up in the morning and going to work!”
