As I begin to collect my thoughts for this issue, old man winter is not letting go, with snow and bitter cold outside. We all look forward to the warm days ahead. Thank you to Julie Renner and everyone in District Seven for hosting a great convention. It was an enjoyable weekend, great food, great cattle and good Holstein fellowship. Thank you to the Lang and Hunsberger families and to Ron Grosjean for being such gracious tour hosts. Everyone enjoyed the weekend. Congratulations to the All-Ohio winners and all the juniors who received awards and scholarships at the Saturday luncheon. I know Joe Miley was surprised at receiving the Distinguished Service Award. Congratulations Joe, your commitment to the Association is unwavering. Congratulations to Diana Miley for receiving Ohio Holstein Woman of the Year, very well deserved. A Message From The President

By Paul Haskins

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” --Helen Keller Hats off to District 7 for an outstanding annual meeting! I’ve attended several Ohio Holstein conventions, however I think this was the first one where I was also involved as part of the host district. That was an amazing process; the teamwork, planning, coordination, and communication to make everything happen was tremendous, and the number of people involved was many. Julie Renner does a great job of annually spearheading this event. Dave Gunkelman, Ken Janes, Barb Lumley, the sale committee, Ben Simpson and his fitting crew put on a super sale; behind the scenes Chelsi Lingle coordinated a District 7 crew that kept the consignments clean and fed overnight. Gracious tour hosts (Gate-Way Holsteins, Springhill Holsteins, and Ron Grosjean’s farm museum) were recruited for Friday afternoon and Lisa Mangun coordinated a wonderful Friday night gathering and meal at our office. Julie and Tom Thorbahn worked with the Shisler Center to make Saturday as seamless as possible, especially considering all the different activities going on for not only the Ohio Holstein Association, but also the junior association and the women’s association: scholarship and award interviews, meetings, an awards banquet and meal, etc. Diana Miley admirably helped us all tackle these different facets, but that should not be a surprise—that’s what made her a very deserving OHA Woman of the Year! The convention would not be successful or possible without sale consignments and buyers, convention participants, and many convention donors that supported us both monetarily and with “in kind” donations of products, supplies, and food. As we went through the planning process, it was interesting to work as a group and figure out how to make all the pieces of this puzzle fit together, and then also inspiring to see so many people step up to the plate and volunteer to make the plan work. I hope that this spring you are also able to experience the same sort of successful teamwork, whether it was with your show string and crew at the recent Spring Dairy Expo, or the day to day work at your home operation as the weather warms up and fieldwork ensues. Best wishes for a safe and successful Spring!

From Your Regional Representative By Glenn Sageser

Who said that registered cows weren’t worth it?! The Ohio Holstein Convention Sales was a success with 67 live lots averaging $3070. This was a pretty good investment for a $10.00 registration fee. Special thanks to District 7 for hosting. Having a successful sale makes my job easier when promoting registrations and getting new members through our start-up program. Also, make the choice to have a more profitable dairy. Sign up on Holstein Complete for one annual fee. Complete integrates membership registrations, classi-

fication, genetic repeats, internet pedigrees, “Tri-Star” production records and the Red Book or Red Book Plus Multi Mate software. You will also receive a discount on all genomic tests you order. The producers who use Complete tell me it is convenient and saves them money. One of the biggest advantages is that it helps them budget their expenses to Holstein USA more efficiently. To get more information about the Holstein Complete program or to enroll, call Customer Service (800-9525200) or myself (502-321-8670).

Hannah Dye of Beloit was named the Esther Welch Ag Communications Scholarship Winner, presented by Patricia Topa, Esther Welch’s daughter.

The Ohio Holstein Association (OHA) kicked off their annual convention event with a spectacular sale on Friday, March 10th and concluded two fun-filled days with their awards luncheon on Saturday, March 11th. District 7 was the host of the annual meeting held in Wooster with the sale at the new Holmes County Fairgrounds in Millersburg. The sale touted a $32,000 top and an average of $3070. (A full report can be found on Page 14.) When the sale concluded, tours were next on the agenda. Springhill Holsteins and Guernseys, Gateway Holsteins and Ron Grosjean put out the welcome mat for attendees to tour and participate in a judging contest. The OHA put on a spread and welcomed everyone to the association office to enjoy a meal and reminisce over the history of the association with a display of old photos and magazines. She’s the modern kind: youthful looking, moderately sized, yet very correct with a welded-on udder. If there is a normal distribution of classification scores within a herd, there would tend to be a few 84- and 89-point cows, but that is not to say that we (or you) should be satisfied with that! We hope she continues her consistent performance, calves out successfully again, and continues to develop. We like her!

Milking a Hippo needed a cow that didn’t kick, an udder If you are asked the question, ”How do you that was properly placed and positioned milk a hippopotamus?”, the answer should be so you could get the bucket under it, teats “very carefully!” I recently read a story in a that were the right size, a cow that milked local Sunday newspaper titled, “The Science easy and a sturdy stool. I learned to milk Behind Milking a Hippo”. The story was when I was four years old, milking a very about Fiona, a new born baby Hippo born at patient and quiet Guernsey cow, one teat at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens. a time, in a tin cup which I emptied into a Fiona came in to the world six weeks early bucket. Dad would finish her for me when and was only about half as big as she should he got done with the cows he was milking. have been. She was too small and too weak to It was our “social” time. We talked about nurse from her mother, Bibi. Getting Fiona’s the day’s happenings, family and friends, strength up was critical and that meant she the weather, etc. Dad used to count how By Barb Lumley needed her mother’s milk or colostrum, just many squirts it took to fill his bucket. It was always great like a baby calf. In order to get the colostrum they had to milk a 3,371 pound hippo---no easy task! Fortunately to have that cow that needed a second bucket! Squirting milk in to the cat’s mouth was always fun and some of Bibi had been worked with for other reasons and was our cats were well trained! It was family time together. trained to go into a small closure where they gave her When we showed at the Ohio State Fair and milked treats to encourage her to lean sideways so they could our cows by hand, we always drew a crowd. There was reach her udder. Reaching the udder was one of the always questions and someone always asked why there biggest problems in trying to milk her. Fortunately the was soapsuds in the bucket. Cindy was featured on a postdoctoral researcher at the zoo was raised on a farm Columbus television show milking her favorite cow, Jazz. and knew how to hand milk. Evidently her well known owner felt hand milking color comes from two types of acids that cause the hippo would be less stressful on her beautiful udder. When I first put my cows on official AR (Advanced to release an oily secretion referred to as “blood sweat” Registry) test, the tester was Ted White from Freeport, from its body. Ohio, in Harrison County and he could drop in anytime A sample of the hippo’s milk was sent to Washington, to test. You never knew when he might be coming. He D.C. to scientist Michael Power at the Smithsonian not only tested all breeds in Ohio, he also traveled to National Zoo. He runs the milk repository at other states as well. He was a “check tester” for cows that the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute were making state and national milk and fat records. He Conservation Ecology Center where there is a national could tell some very interesting stories about the check milk bank with no fewer than 15,000 milk samples from at least 130 different mammal species. Until he got Bibi’s testing! Most of the cows that were making huge records for their breeders were housed in box stalls in deep, deep samples, he had never seen hippo milk. It is high in straw and were milked by hand. He never mentioned protein, low in fat and sugar. Since Bibi did not have a any names---just some of the things he found in the lot of milk they went to work to prepare a formula for straw! the baby hippo. Kudos to Amy Miley (D-7) and COBA Select Sires for the fantastic job on the All-Ohio Calendar! Several glowing comments have been shared about this year’s calendar and OHA thanks you for your commitment to the project and a good looking calendar. Congratulations to those members who have hit the 40 year HAUSA membership mark. They are: Matthew Steiner (D-7), David P Winchell (D1), Richard M. Miller (D-2), C. C. Finton (D-3) and Michael E. Welch (D-8).

The Ohio Holstein Women’s page returns to the magazine with the activities and recipes from the Ohio Holstein Women. Watch for some select items the women have for sale coming up in the next issue. Roy and Lisa Mangun (D-7) just celebrated 32 years together. Happy Anniversary and many more to come! Joe and I would like to thank Ohio Holstein for the honor of being selected Distinguished Service and Ohio Holstein Woman of the Year Award winners. We were both pleasantly surprised when our names

Spring Dairy Expo Award of Honor

were called; and to win them both in the same year was an added bonus. Ohio Holstein has been a big part of our lives for as long as we can remember. I remember Joe holding various District & State board positions and the children and I were active in the Junior Association; helping with lunch stands & going to National Conventions. We have met many interesting people and travelled to many states as National Convention delegates through the years. We hope that everyone accepts the opportunity to serve on committees, as delegates, or in any other way if asked (or you can volunteer). You will be glad you did. Thank you again. Joe & Diana Miley All the details for participating in the National Holstein Convention in Washington can be found at the Holstein Association, USA website. Steve Moff (D-2) is a candidate for national director of the Holstein Association, USA. Good Luck Steve! Congrats to JR Kaverman, Jr. for exhibiting the Reserve Grand Champion MS Call-Del Krazy Shoelace at the Kentucky National Holstein Show and Sale on Thursday, April 6th in Louisville. Count it! Velvet View Farm owners Aaron and Brandi Schlauch (D-7) celebrated 22 years together on April 8th! Happy Anniversary!

Lewis Jones (left) of Columbus was awarded the 2017 Spring Dairy Expo Award of Honor presented by John Griewe at the recent Spring Dairy Expo. This award is presented every year to an outstanding leader in the Ohio dairy industry. Lewis managed the Spring Dairy Expo for a number of years and most recently retired from the General Manager position of the American Guernsey Association. Congratulations Lewis!

Dairy Farmer-Funded Grants

Are Making A Difference in Schools New statistics show that more children are choosing to eat breakfast at school. Nationally, about 28% of children are lining up for breakfast at school. But thanks to dairy farmer’s investment in checkoff, breakfast participation numbers have climbed to more than 43% for Ohio and West Virginia schools receiving a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant. On behalf of Ohio and West Virginia's dairy farmers, ADA Mideast has provided $1.65 million in Fuel Up to Play 60 grants to more than 550 schools since the program began in 2009. These grants help schools add new dairy-friendly items to their menus and purchase equipment, such as mobile serving carts, smoothie stations and breakfast bars, to drive dairy consumption in schools.

Dairy farmer Rob Bouic and ADA Mideast CEO Scott Higgins present a FUTP60 grant to Jonathan Alder School District on behalf of Ohio’s dairy farmers.

Why promote school breakfast? It’s simple! Every breakfast served at school includes one to three servings of dairy. This alone provides an opportunity for additional sales of 1.5 billion single-serve units of fluid milk nationally. In fact, Ohio and West Virginia schools that received dairy farmer-funded grants for the 2015-16 school year reported increases in milk and yogurt sales, above the national average! Milk sales in these schools increased 5.5%, and yogurt sales increased by 16.7%. OHIO NEWS

Queen’s Corner By Victoria Deam

Hello Everyone! My name is Victoria Deam and I will be serving as your 2017 Ohio Holstein Queen! I live in Sugarcreek, Ohio with my parents Neil and Jennifer Deam as well as my younger sister Emily. We live on a small farm where we are currently raising our 2017 showstring of Holstein heifers and calves. Since before I was able to walk my family has had me out at the barn with our beautiful Holsteins. From spending time at my aunt and uncle’s farm in Dover, Ohio playing with baby calves even before I was in school, to watching my cousins exhibit dairy at many different shows before I was old enough to show myself, my love of the Holstein breed took its place in my heart. My dad has always been very instrumental in giving me many opportunities to learn about and show cows at different levels. Teaching others about the intricacies of farm life and raising a successful show string is very valuable to the continuation of our association.

be the girl that ‘younger me’ used to look up to. Looking back on my childhood growing up at big cow shows, some of my favorite memories are the friends I have made. The friendly community of people who show at places like the Spring Dairy Expo, the Ohio State Fair, or even NAILE is without a doubt a huge reason why I love being at the shows. A friendly smile is something you will receive from almost anyone whether you are walking around the barn, entering the arena, or just hanging around the aisle. As a young girl no matter if I was in the top or bottom half of the class I was always eager to get to see the Queen come by and give me my ribbon.

the little ones are looking up to and I realize what a huge role that really is. As Queen I will take my position seriously and keep in mind at all times that there are little girls looking up to me. I believe that with our busy world today many young kids are getting pulled in different directions, and in many cases that means being pulled away from the dairy industry because of sports and other commitments. I want to be an example to the younger generation that there is still time to love our cows and remember the things that we grew up doing. We are the future of the industry and I am excited to have the opportunity to be a driving force that will help to ensure the future is bright!

In the last few months I began making big choices about my future such as college and what I would like to do for the rest of my life. I love babysitting which often makes me think about the past when I was the one being watched. Now I am the ‘big girl’ that

I am looking forward to meeting even more people in the dairy industry over the next year. If there is any event you would like me to attend please feel free to contact me at (330) 401-5433 or vtdeam@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing you all soon!

I believe agriculture is something many people lack common knowledge in, and helping to educate others about our industry is a job that I feel is very important. I am excited to be the 2017 Ohio Holstein Queen not only because I will have the honor of representing dairy farmers and our Holstein breed at district shows, county fairs, and national-level shows but also because I will 46 0

Ohio Holstein Women Meet By Sara Twining & Louise Harding The Ohio Holstein Women Annual Meeting was held Saturday March 11, 2017 at the Shisler Conference Center, Wooster, Ohio at 8 AM. In the absence of President Betty Whiteleather Vice President Louise Harding led the meeting. Minutes were read and approved. Lisa Mangus gave the Treasurer’s report. Ohio Holstein Women purchased large, sturdy chairs for the Holstein office board room. A motion was made to pay all bills. Lisa Mangun said there are still many cookbooks as well as other Holstein items for sale at the office. There was discussion about ideas for sale of the remaining cookbooks. It was suggested the sale items be pictured in the magazine and on Face Book for sale with a shipping and handling charge so they could be mailed to buyers. Lisa said she would handle the orders as they came into the office. The ads will run in the Membership and Fall issues of the Ohio Holstein News. It was also suggested we might produce an online version of the cookbook for sale through an app. We also discussed an addition to the current cookbook. There was already work done toward that several years ago but the printing cost at that time was prohibitive. Louise Harding said she would check with another printer about cost. These recipes could also be included in a Women’s page in the magazine. Other business: 1 )Pete Spike is still han52

She made a pdf file that the applicants could fill out on line. She sends it Pete for the website and Face Book and usually to ATI and main campus of OSU and Wilmington College. A check for $650 will be presented to the winner at the dinner meeting. 4) Diana Miley and Lisa Mangun cleaned the back room of the office and organized the con-

Woman of the Year was Diana Miley. The Ohio Women’s Scholarship winner was Macy Conrad from District 5. Ohio Holstein Queen is Victoria Deam from District 3. The new Ohio Holstein News editor, Melissa Hart, joined us. She was very helpful, as was former editor Jackie Bickel, as we discussed plans for an OHW page for the future. Former OHW president Kathy (Whiteleather) Johnson wrote one each issue. Louise Harding and Sara Twining will work on this this year. We’ll include recipes from the members. New business: Julie Renner reminded us that Ohio is slated to hold the National Holstein Convention in 2021. Please be looking for ideas for the women’s tour day. Also 2020 is Ohio Holstein Association’s 100th anniversary. Are there some ideas for how to celebrate? Make it two special years in a row. These District 7 ladies served up the meal on Friday evening of the OHA Convention at the Ohio Holstein Office. From Left: Debbie Gilbert, Diana Miley, Kaye Janes, Lisa Mangun, Amy Lingle & Barb Sprunger.

Spark of Generosity for OSU Dairy Judging Program By Bonnie Ayars Earlier in the winter, COBA offered the donation of an ET calf to the Buckeye Classic Sale, held at the Spring Dairy Expo, to raise some additional funds for the Ohio State University Dairy Judging Program. With this spark of generosity, we are proud to announce that more than $19,000 has been raised to assist in the various traveling expenses associated with the program. It was cleverly titled the "Clipboard Project." Interested donors could either give to the future of the program through $100 investment/donor shares and others could still bid last on the calf at the sale during Spring Dairy Expo. More than 100 donors and advocates came forth to display their support. However since the sale when the calf was auctioned off at $8500, we have been approached by more people and businesses who would like to contribute. The opportunity to give remains open. Those wishing to contribute are welcome to contact me at ayars.5@osu.edu. Thank you to each contributor, COBA for the very special calf, and to John Ayars and ST Genetics (OSU dairy judg-
