Celebrating independence Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe that a full year has passed since I began writing these messages as CEO of our statewide association of electric cooperatives. 2025 was a fulfilling year, filled with both highlights and challenges, and I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts and to reflect on our progress.

This year, we’ll celebrate a historic milestone: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It’s a good time to pause and reflect on the values that have shaped our nation: liberty, self-governance, and working together for a better future. It seems to me that these same values are at the heart of electric cooperatives. Just as our nation was built through unity and shared purpose, Ohio’s electric cooperatives have thrived by working together while maintaining independent local control. The independence of the local co-op boards allows them to be flexible, innovative, and responsive to members’ needs as they make decisions that best serve their specific communities.

There’s much to be optimistic about in the new year. Several electric cooperatives in Ohio have experienced stable load growth, thanks to new opportunities and expanding communities. We hope this positive trend will not only continue but also spread to more areas of rural Ohio. Rest assured, the generation facilities owned by the cooperatives, and therefore by their members, stand ready to power that growth, and we are committed to keeping those resources operating for their full, useful lives.

As we fulfill our mission to provide that reliable, affordable electricity to cooperative members around the state, it’s helped that we’ve seen some much-needed regulatory reform at the federal level. It couldn’t have come at a better time, as there’s been a growing sense of uncertainty in our industry caused by the increasing number of data centers coming online.

While it’s not an immediate problem, the amount of electricity those centers demand has raised concerns about whether new power generation can be developed quickly enough to keep up. As with many challenges our country has faced before, I am confident that we will work through this one, too. It will take time, but I believe in our ability to adapt and develop solutions that solve problems. In the meantime, though, it’s important that our political and regulatory leaders stay focused on maintaining reliability and protecting the U.S. power grid — one of our nation’s most valuable assets.

As we honor the 250th anniversary of American independence, let’s celebrate both the spirit of independence and the strong bonds that hold us together.

The Youth Tour effect

A former delegate says the long-lasting connections and eye-opening experiences on the co-op-sponsored event made it ‘more than ‘just a trip.’

K

yle Hicks, the new senior government affairs analyst at Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, hadn’t always planned to pursue a career in public policy — he wanted to be a teacher.

For Hicks, his career trajectory (perhaps his life trajectory) changed in 2019, when he was sponsored by his co-op, Lancaster-based South Central Power Company, to attend the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour of Washington, D.C.

More than just a trip Youth Tour’s origin dates to the 1957 annual meeting of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, where then-Senator Lyndon Johnson shared his vision of “sending youngsters to the national capital where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents.” Co-ops started sending teens to D.C. that very summer, and since then, 4

OHIO COOPERATIVE LIVING • JANUARY 2026

electric cooperatives around the country have sponsored more than 100,000 students from their communities to take the weeklong, all-expensespaid trip.

Hicks decided to apply to take the trip after hearing about the experiences his mom and sister had when they went on Youth Tour in 1994 and 2017, respectively. South Central Power selected him as one of its delegates as he was finishing his junior year at Amanda-Clearcreek High School, and that summer, he boarded a D.C.-bound bus with 30 other Ohio students who had been sponsored by their own co-ops.

They explored all that the capital has to offer, met with policymakers, and learned about electric cooperatives’ role in the history of the country.

The cherry on top: Hicks was elected as Ohio’s representative to the Youth Leadership Council by his fellow delegates, which meant his involvement with co-ops was only just beginning.

The following February, he traveled to New Orleans (his first-ever flight!) to work alongside 42 other states’ YLC representatives at PowerXchange, the NRECA’s annual national conference. In their support roles, they had the opportunity to meet leaders from cooperatives across the country, and were recognized on the conference’s main stage.

Friendships that will last a lifetime

By the time it was over and they all prepared to head home, Hicks and the other YLC reps knew they’d bonded in a way few others will ever experience. “We stayed up all night until our early flights the next day because we knew we’d probably never be together as a full group again,” he says. “As heartbreaking as it was, it’s a night I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

He says he still talks with his friends from Youth Tour and YLC on a weekly basis, leaning on each other’s expertise, getting advice, and simply cheering one another on from every corner of the country.

Soon after, he enrolled at Ohio State, with a double major in political science and agribusiness and applied economics, but it didn’t take him long to realize he wasn’t ready to be done with the cooperative programs that had given him so much, and served as one of NRECA’s staff assistants Continued on page 6

for the 2022 Youth Tour. Formerly referred to as “blue shirts” for the royal blue polos they don during the event, the staff assistants work during Youth Tour to ensure delegates have a memorable, seamless trip.

Beyond the blue shirt Hicks says his exposure to life outside of the small rural town where he grew up had been limited before Youth Tour. But after the experience, he says he evolved from an average high school student to a young person buzzing with excitement for the future.

More profoundly, thanks in part to the dozens of new connections from across the country and experiences that gave him a more diverse outlook on the world and his role in it, he found a new career ambition.

“Before Youth Tour, I wanted to be a teacher,” Hicks says.

“That experience gave me the confidence to try and succeed in a career I knew little about at the time: politics.”

Hicks has maintained his connections with NRECA, South Central Power, and Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives, the statewide association that serves Ohio’s co-ops — and after landing his new job in government affairs at Ohio State, he was quick to reach out to his cooperative peers.

“In the political world, it’s easy to narrow your focus on what you believe is the ‘right way’ and block out viewpoints that differ from yours,” he says. “In those situations, I think about the incredible group of people I was surrounded by during Youth Tour and how we all had different backgrounds and perspectives — none of which was more important than the next. When we’re creating and shaping policies, it’s essential that we work together, not against one another, and consider the needs of others.”

What effect will Youth Tour have on you?

Nearly all of Ohio’s 25 electric cooperatives participate in Youth Tour by sponsoring delegates, which means that students selected will pay nothing out of pocket to attend — all travel, lodging, food, and experiences are fully covered by a delegate’s sponsoring co-op.

This year’s tour will take place June 14 to 20.

Those interested are encouraged to visit their local electric cooperative’s website to see if they are accepting Youth Tour applications.

Most co-ops’ applications are due between February and March.

G

ray squirrels are the bane of those of us who attempt to keep backyard bird feeders filled with birdseed. In large cities, small towns, and even rural areas across the Buckeye State, these arboreal aerialists seem to defy gravity in getting to places we don’t want them to be. But there was a time in Ohio history when gray squirrel populations were even higher than today — much higher.

Prior to statehood in 1803, Ohio was covered with mature forest from north to south and east to west.

Add in various species of nut trees — oaks, hickories, chestnuts — and this vast area was gray squirrel paradise; they thrived in untold millions.

For instance, a very early Columbus resident and hunter shot 67 gray squirrels in one day from just one

tree in the middle of a cornfield on what today is the Statehouse lawn. In 1807, gray squirrels had become such a nuisance due to destroying corn and other crops that the Ohio General Assembly passed a law stating that each person subject to payment of a county tax “…shall in addition thereto, produce to the clerk of the township in which he may reside, such number of squirrel scalps as the trustees shall, at their annual meeting, apportion, in proportion to their county levees, provided that it does not exceed 100 or be less than ten.”

In addition to high squirrel numbers — or possibly because of it — an even more amazing phenomenon occurred during those early years that we no longer

see today: mass gray squirrel migrations. It seemed to happen every five years or so. A few restless squirrels would begin moving together through the treetops, soon to be joined by dozens more, then hundreds, then thousands, then tens of thousands, with all the squirrels continually moving rapidly in the same general direction. Even when the squirrels encountered a large stream or river, they didn’t hesitate; they just jumped in, began swimming, and once on the other side simply crawled out, climbed a tree, and kept going.

Early Ohioans who observed these gray squirrel migrations firsthand reported that the squirrels did not appear to be starving or in poor health. In fact, they oftentimes left areas of abundant food. Milton Trautman, a well-respected Ohio biologist of the 20th century, wrote the following: “The [scientific] literature contains many diverse statements about these movements, of many squirrels that drowned attempting to swim across the Ohio River. It is stated that whenever mass drownings occurred, if one stood on a high hill considerably removed from the river, the river’s course could be observed to be outlined by vultures flying above it, searching for drowned squirrels upon which to feed.”

So, why did gray squirrels occasionally move to new locations? Unfortunately, wildlife biologists today simply do not know. What we do know, however, is that as Ohio’s virgin forests were cleared for settlement, and the gray squirrel population declined as a result, their periodic migrations gradually declined as well, until eventually stopping altogether.

Of course, more than a few tall tales grew up around squirrel migrations, especially having to do with how they crossed rivers. The “tallest” of the stories stated that some gray squirrels, upon reaching the Ohio River and seeing its huge size and powerful current, would grab a shingle from a pile of wood meant for the roof of a nearby log cabin, place it in the water, jump aboard, then lift and spread their tail to act as a sail, and cross the river to the Kentucky or West Virginia bank, arriving high and dry.

S

teve Stolte was a civil engineering student at Ohio State University when the Silver Bridge, which connected Gallipolis to Point Pleasant, West Virgina, on busy U.S. Route 35, collapsed into the Ohio River.

He had been inspired to study civil engineering while he worked at his father’s construction company in high school, but he didn’t start focusing on bridges until that 1967 disaster, which killed 46 people.

“The collapse of Silver Bridge impacted me significantly,” Stolte says. “It heightened my interest in bridge construction and changed the course of my career.”

After the collapse, Ohio began to require that all bridges in the state be inspected once each year. Seeing an opportunity to both make some money and potentially save some lives, Stolte and some of his college friends started up a new business.

They attended classes during the week, but on weekends they traveled into rural counties throughout the state to perform those mandated bridge inspections.

“We learned quickly to drive across each bridge prior to doing our inspection, because we often didn’t want to drive across after seeing the condition they were in,” he says.

The experience broadened his knowledge of construction and fueled his burgeoning passion for bridges — particularly the covered bridges of Union County, much of which is served by URE–Union Rural Electric Cooperative.

After he graduated in 1969, Stolte took a job in Union County and soon became a partner in the engineering firm

of Fleming, Page, and Stolte. One of the other partners, Jim Page, an environmental engineer, worked together with Stolte to create the grid system that numbered all the homes in Union County. It was a massive undertaking, but it gave him a better understanding of the area.

In 1984, Stolte decided to run for county engineer. “It was time for change,” he says. “I wanted to be more progressive and apply for grants to make improvements.”

He would serve in that role for nearly 25 years, working tirelessly to update both equipment and infrastructure throughout the county. Later, he was elected as a county commissioner and served another 10 years in office. In that time, the county replaced more than 200 bridges, widened 100 miles of road, improved traffic signage, and installed thousands of feet of modern guardrails.

But one aspect of his tenure stands out: his work on covered bridges.

“We discovered the covered bridges in Union County when we inspected them in college,” Stolte says. “I’m most proud of building two new covered bridges, Buck Run Covered Bridge and North Lewisburg Covered Bridge. We also elevated all covered bridges from 5 to 8 tons to a higher load limit, so school buses and farm equipment could go over them.”

The Buck Run Covered Bridge, built in 2006, spans Darby Creek and is the longest single-span wooden bridge in Ohio at 160 feet in length. The two-lane North Lewisburg Covered Bridge was completed that same year to replace the original 1868 Pottersburg Bridge, which was relocated and restored — and dedicated to Stolte in 2022.

Together with his wife, Mardy, Stolte still devotes his time and efforts to educating visitors about covered bridges through local events, such as Dine on a Covered Bridge, designed to showcase and celebrate the history of covered bridges in Union County. The event draws hundreds of people from across the state. From July through October every year, visitors are offered guided tours, lunch or dinner made with locally sourced ingredients, and live music on the bridge.

After spending the bulk of his life restoring the old and building the new, Stolte is convinced it was the right thing to do. “Covered bridges are a link to the past, a past that was simpler and slower-paced,” he says. “They are also a link to our transportation history. They were the very first bridge that saw widespread use in Ohio. And they are still valuable today.”

Dissolve salt into hot water. With flour in a large bowl, gradually add the salted water while stirring. Gather dough and form into a ball. Pull and knead dough by hand for 5 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding more flour if too sticky. Place ball of dough back in bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let rest 30 minutes.

With a paper towel, squeeze liquid from cabbage. In a medium bowl, mix cabbage, grated carrot, chives, sesame seeds, and soy sauce; refrigerate. Roll dough into a 24-inch rope and cut into 24 pieces. Cover dough pieces with a damp towel. Pull out one piece of dough; roll into a sphere in palm of hand, dip in cornstarch, and roll out to a 3-inch disk. Stack disks with parchment squares between them to prevent sticking.

One at a time, place a small amount of cabbage filling in the center of each wrapper. Dip finger in water and lightly wet the inside dough edge around the filling. Fold dough over the filling and pinch to seal the two sides together at the topmost curved edge while leaving the sides open. Rest straight edge of dough on surface and hold the sealed part upright between index finger and thumb; then with the other hand make 3 small pleats on each side, starting from the middle and working down the sides, pressing to seal after each pleat. Press the middle of the U-shaped corners upward, making a W shape with the dough, then pinch the W to fully seal.

Cut parchment paper to line the steamer; punch holes through paper to match the holes in the steamer.

Arrange dumplings in a single layer. Bring water to a boil, then lower to medium. Place steamer over simmering water; cover and cook 12 to 15 minutes until plump, translucent, and firm when pressed. While waiting, mix the ingredients for the dipping sauce. Carefully remove dumplings from steamer with tongs and serve with dipping sauce on the side.

Per serving: 261 calories, 1 gram fat (0 grams saturated fat), 53 grams total carbohydrates, 0 milligrams cholesterol, 977 milligrams sodium, 3 grams fiber, 9 grams protein.

CARROT GINGER SOUP Prep: 5 minutes | Cook: 25 minutes | Servings: 4 16-ounce bag baby carrots* 1 medium onion, evenly chopped 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated 4 cups vegetable broth 1 teaspoon lemon juice ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon ground coriander 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 13.66-ounce can coconut milk ¼ cup pepitas or sunflowers seeds *Bagged baby carrots are convenient for steaming because they're cut to a uniform size, which aids in an even cook time.

Place steamer basket into a pot and add water, leaving an inch or two of space below the steamer. Bring water to a boil, then lower temperature to medium. Add carrots to basket; cover with lid and steam 12 to 15 minutes, until easily pierced with fork yet shape stays intact. Transfer carrots to a strainer, then add onion to steamer and top with grated ginger; steam until onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. With a blender or food processor, blend together carrots, onion, ginger, and a cup or so of vegetable broth until smooth. Transfer to a pot over medium heat; stir in remaining broth, lemon juice, and spices. Add a bit of water to thin, if needed. Cook until simmering. Remove from heat, swirl in coconut milk, and serve hot, topped with seeds.

STEAMED FISH AND GARLIC GREENS Prep: 5 minutes | Cook: 5 to 10 minutes | Servings: 2 large bunch kale, collard, and/or turnip greens 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/3 cup dry white wine 2 teaspoons minced garlic 8 ounces boneless, skinless white fillet (cod, halibut, sea bass) salt and pepper Tear leafy greens from stems. Plunge leaves in water to wash; shake until dripping slows. Rinse fish fillets and pat dry. In a deep skillet with fitted lid, melt butter on medium-low, then pour in wine and layer in garlic, greens, then fillets. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Increase heat to medium; cover and let steam 5 minutes.

Crack lid to check fish for doneness and continue steaming until fully cooked. With a large spatula, split fish and greens between two plates and spoon sauce on top.

Per serving: 249 calories, 13 grams fat (7 grams saturated fat), 8 grams total carbohydrates, 75 milligrams cholesterol, 595 milligrams sodium, 6 grams fiber, 19 grams protein.

CHOCOLATE STEAMED BUNS Prep: 40 minutes | Proof: 1½ hours | Cook: 20 minutes | Servings: 8 2½ cups flour (spooned and leveled) 1 teaspoon instant yeast 2 tablespoons sugar ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ¾ cup whole milk, warmed to 110 F

1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2.5 ounces dark chocolate, finely chopped ¼ cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually pour in warm milk while mixing with a wooden spoon, forming a sticky dough. Add vegetable oil and knead 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Shape into a ball, return to mixing bowl, and cover with a damp towel. Let proof in a warm spot for 1 to 1½ hours, until doubled in size.

Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over low heat, melt dark chocolate into heavy cream, stirring regularly. Remove from heat and stir in sugar, then sift in cocoa, stirring until incorporated. Cover and set aside. Once dough has risen, punch it with fist to release air bubbles. Cut eight 3x4-inch pieces of parchment paper and evenly divide dough onto them, covering with damp towel. One at a time, roll into a ball, then stretch and press into a palm-sized disk. Spoon chocolate mixture into the center, being careful not to overfill.

Stretch opposite dough edges over filling until they meet, then pinch together. Take the two open ends and meet them in the middle, pinching dough to fully seal. Return to parchment seam-side down, again covering with towel. Repeat with remaining dough.

Fill a pot with water to an inch or two below the steamer. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Arrange buns, still on parchment, inside steamer basket with space between them. (Do in batches if needed.) Cover with lid and steam for 15 minutes. Don't peek! Slide off of hot burner and let sit covered 5 more minutes. Lift lid without tilting it so the collected water doesn't fall onto the buns. Carefully remove buns and peel off parchment. Serve warm or let cool to room temperature, then store in an airtight container in the fridge (reheat in microwave with a damp towel for 30 seconds power) or freezer (steam directly from frozen for 8 to 10 minutes).

t Paulding Putnam, we’re committed to transparency and keeping your rates as low as possible while ensuring the reliable service you’ve counted on for 90 years. That’s why we’re sharing details on an upcoming rate adjustment to our monthly Service Charge.

Effective February 1, 2026, the Service Charge will increase $3.50 per residential account (from $41.50 to $45) to help cover the fixed costs of maintaining our electric distribution system.

The energy charge (based on kilowatt-hours used) won’t change.

We know every dollar counts, especially as we all feel the pinch of inflation. As your fellow member, I pay my own bill each month and understand the weight of these changes. This isn’t a decision we make lightly — it’s driven by skyrocketing costs that are outpacing revenues, much like the challenges that led our board to pause capital credit retirements earlier this year. We’re a not-for-profit co-op, owned by you, and our goal is always to protect the financial health of the system we all rely on.

What the Service Charge covers – and why it matters

The Service Charge is a flat monthly fee that funds the backbone of your electric service, regardless of how much power you use. Just like your home or car insurance, you pay for access to the benefits. Even if you don’t turn on a light at home, we must still maintain our equipment so power is available to you 24/7/365.

Our service charge pays for:

• Infrastructure essentials: Poles, wires, substations, transformers, and meters.

• Ongoing maintenance: Tree trimming, pole testing, repairs, and upgrades to prevent outages.

ovember 10 was a momentous day as Paulding Putnam held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the rural Paulding home of Dennis and Tammy Clark, the co-op’s first fiber-to-the-home subscribers, officially launching service and opening sign-ups across areas of Paulding, Payne, Haviland, and Scott.

Dennis, a 34-year co-op retiree, and Tammy, senior director of clinical education for Fresenius Kidney Care (Waltham, Mass.), chose the WorkWire 1 Gig x 1 Gig symmetrical package with battery backup and managed Wi-Fi.

Fiber build timeline The Board of Trustees approved broadband service in July 2024; mainline construction began in April 2025. Despite material delays, more than 350 miles of fiber have been completed with contractor ITG Communications.

Current work is underway in the Roselm and Ottoville areas, as well as in the villages of Payne and Grover Hill, where free community Wi-Fi will be provided to community buildings and parks. Construction in Fort Jennings, Van Wert, and Convoy will follow.

The goal is to provide service to unserved or under-served member communities, including non-member territories, when feasible, based on need and cost throughout Paulding, Putnam, Van Wert, and Allen counties in Ohio and Allen and Adams counties in Indiana. This is why completing the co-op’s online interest form is crucial to gauge need and guide engineering and network design.

s we begin another year, I want to pause and express gratitude — for you, the members of Paulding Putnam — for your continued trust and support. This past year has been marked by meaningful progress, both in strengthening our local system and in working at the national level to influence energy policies that directly influence reliability, affordability, and resilience. While the details of federal regulations can feel distant, they shape our daily operations here at home.

Over the past year, electric cooperatives across the country came together for advocacy efforts on the EPA’s Power Plant Rule. The rule would have forced a rapid shift away from always-available power generation resources, threatening the accessibility of a diverse fuel supply that keeps electricity reliable. Renewable energy sources are an essential and growing part of our energy future, but the demand for 18B

electricity is rising rapidly, and natural gas, coal, and nuclear power remain essential for ensuring power is available around the clock. We collaborated and engaged with policymakers for a more balanced approach to generating power.

Emergency management We’re also seeing progress with bipartisan support of the FEMA Act of 2025, which would speed up the disaster recovery process for electric cooperatives and the communities they serve. Severe storms are a fact of life, and their impact on the electric system can be devastating. If passed, the bill would make FEMA a stronger, more responsive agency to help strengthen rural resilience, protect taxpayer dollars, and ensure essential services are restored as quickly as possible after a natural disaster. Achievements like these are not just wins in Washington; they are wins for members like you.

Pre-pay, technology updates In addition to advocacy efforts, we are proactively addressing our communities’ needs by investing in fiber internet services to under-served members and communities. We continued to invest in new technologies and programs that improve service for our members.

Through advanced monitoring systems and AI tools that improve daily operations, we are better equipped to identify power delivery issues or challenges before they occur.

A new bill pay option coming in late 2026 is the option to prepay on your electric bill. Prepaying for power gives you more control over your energy budget. You can add funds as you go — like adding gas to your car. With real-time alerts and daily usage updates, it’s an easy way to stay on top of your energy costs and stay in control.

The path forward requires innovative thinking and memberfocused solutions. I’m confident that with the dedication of employees and the continued support of our members, we are well positioned to adapt and meet challenges head-on.

hen outdoor temperatures drop, electricity use naturally rises. Colder weather drives us indoors, where we rely more heavily on home heating systems, more lighting, and household appliances. Heating systems run longer and more frequently to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. Combine that with the fact that most people use electricity at the same times — typically in the mornings and early evenings — and the result is significant pressure on our electric grid.

We work closely with Buckeye Power, our local generation and transmission cooperative, to plan for these seasonal weather patterns and changes and ensure you have reliable power every day of the year. This partnership involves detailed resource and infrastructure planning to make certain electricity is available whenever you need it. However, it’s important to remember that our local system is part of a much larger regional and national electric grid.

During the winter months, when homes and businesses across the country are using more electricity simultaneously, overall demand can approach — or occasionally exceed — available supply.

This is especially true during severe weather events, such as ice storms, sudden temperature drops, or equipment malfunctions that reduce generation capacity. In rare cases when demand threatens to outpace supply, the regional grid operator may call for temporary, controlled outages — often referred to as rolling blackouts — to prevent broader system failures. If such a situation arises, Paulding Putnam will provide timely updates and information to members.

To prepare for these scenarios and minimize risks, Paulding Putnam and Buckeye Power take proactive measures to

This trend mirrors broader pressures on Ohio’s rural cooperatives, where average monthly bills have climbed about 30% since 2015 (from about $107 to $139 statewide), according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Specific to Paulding Putnam:

• Padmount transformers: Up 77% since 2019.

• Underground wire: Up 31% over the same period.

• Arrestor poles with crossarm brackets: Up 63%.

• Property taxes: An extra $70,000+ from 2024 to 2025 alone.

Add in statewide drivers like an 833% surge in capacity auction prices for 2025-2026 (per PJM Interconnection) due to surging demand from data centers, electrification, and supply constraints in PJM’s grid (covering Ohio, 12 other states, and D.C.).

The Rockstar Employee award is an internal recognition program that allows employees to nominate and vote on deserving co-workers who they feel have gone above and beyond or deserve recognition.

John joined the co-op in 1997 as a member of the tree crew. Over the years, he learned to trim trees, became an apprentice lineman, and eventually moved into line work, crew leadership, and supervision. His career has grown alongside the co-op and has been shaped by decades of transition, retirements, and technological change.

“When I started, I never seriously considered that things couldn’t stay the same,” John said. “As the older guys began retiring, it became real that I needed to adjust. I failed at times and was uncertain in others, but that’s how we grow. The organization will always change because it’s made up of individuals who have their own part to play, and the evolving needs of the members drive what we do.”

That mindset has guided John through changes in co-ops and the industry.

“When Ryan and I started, we were the youngest in a group of older guys,” he said. “Now, the line group is much younger and better educated from attending COLT. Now we use a lot more technology and collect 18F

data that’s helped improve outage restoration, mapping, work management, and switching load. I never would have thought we’d be using iPads in so many ways on a daily basis.”

Embracing that technology has helped keep operations efficient and ready for the future, especially as Paulding Putnam expands into fiber internet.

“The last few years have been busy, and we have grown as a company,” John said. “I think with consistency and time, we will become more familiar with each other and the work being done. Challenges will always be a part of our job, but like a new apprentice, as time passes and learning continues, things will be more familiar, and the work will come together more easily. After a while, we’ll look back at some of the bumps along the road (like the derecho) and be glad it’s in the past.”

Through years of growth and change, John has seen the importance of clear communication and understanding how each role connects to the bigger picture.

“Ask questions to understand the entire picture,” he said.

“No one does work that won’t eventually affect others here or outside Paulding Putnam.”

John takes a lot of pride in the team around him, and being selected as a Rockstar Employee a second time means a great deal to him.

“We have a lot of great people here at Paulding Putnam,” John said. “It’s very humbling that they were kind enough to vote for me.”

Today, John remains a steady, respected leader whose focus on teamwork and growth continues to strengthen Paulding Putnam.

$13,387 donated to 17 local organizations

M

embers of Paulding Putnam recently donated $13,387 to 17 local charities and community projects through the cooperative’s Operation Round Up program.

Thanks to the 80% of members who round up their electric bills and donate to this fund, Paulding Putnam has provided more than $778,819 to northwest Ohio and northeast Indiana communities since 2010.

Participating members round up their monthly electric bills to the next dollar, with the extra pennies being used to help fund charities and groups in their communities. Each quarter, the funds are dispensed to local causes that applied for funding.

The most recent donation recipients include: • Continental Parents of Pirates (POP): $700 to help cover the expenses of their end-of-year field day.

• Continental Volunteer Fire Dept. Association: $1,950 to purchase an AED

• Paulding County Opportunity Center: $500 to purchase food pantry items for students.

• Paulding Elementary: $400 to support their field trip to Auglaize Canoe & Kayak.

• Paulding Exempted Village Schools: $500 to support installing 15 little libraries at key community locations.

• Paulding High School Blessings in a Bag: $1,287 to provide weekend meal bags for students in need.

• Van Wert County Humane Society: $400 to help cover costs for spay/neuter vet clinics.

• Crestview Early Childhood Center: $500 to purchase items for their Trunk or Treat event.

• Van Wert County Victims Services: $500 to cover printing materials.

• Defiance County Historical Society: $500 to restore the Wabash Railroad Boxcar.

• Van Wert Elks Lodge: $1,500 to purchase a defibrillator.

• Defiance Soil & Water: $500 to install an outdoor message board with a pet waste bag dispenser.

• Woodland Band Boosters: $500 to purchase props, including fences and benches.

• Family Promise of Lima – Allen County: $1,650 to purchase air mattresses, sheets, and bed bug covers.

• Marquardt Lutheran Church: $1,000 to purchase backpacks with school supplies for Heritage Elementary.

• Paulding County Economic Development: $500 to purchase items for the Youth Business Showcase.

• Paulding County Hospital Foundation: $500 to provide support and education materials for the BBQ luncheon.

With nearly 30 years of experience in internet and communications — and as a longtime Paulding Putnam member — Luke brings a deep understanding of both broadband technology and cooperative values. A lifelong resident of the Ottoville and Fort Jennings areas, Luke lives with his wife, April, and their three children on a small homestead in Van Wert County, where their family enjoys sustainable living and providing homegrown goods to their community.

Luke’s career began in 1997 on the operations side of Bright.net, where he gained handson experience with evolving internet technologies. He went on to spend 16 years in sales and client relations at Com Net, Inc., followed by more than two years as an account executive at ISPN, collaborating with broadband providers nationwide. His extensive work with cooperatives strengthened his belief in the cooperative model and eventually led him to Paulding Putnam — especially as the co-op expands into fiber broadband.

In his new role, Luke will coordinate day-to-day broadband operations, schedule fiber installs, support business accounts, and strengthen partnerships with vendors and members. He’s eager to help streamline broadband processes, support the rollout of high-speed fiber, and contribute to a deployment that expands access and choice for local communities. Returning to his operations roots, Luke looks forward to delivering the same level of excellence that members have come to expect from Paulding Putnam’s electric services.

Outside of work, Luke enjoys homesteading, baking artisan breads, soccer officiating, and traveling — from hiking in Alaska to relaxing on Carolina beaches. He also serves on the board of Christians in Communications, where he values the opportunity to support fellowship and faith within the industry. Luke believes in “living the dream,” embracing each moment with gratitude and positivity.

With 25 years of experience in the electrical industry and deep roots in Edgerton, Ohio, Al brings a strong background in project management and a genuine passion for serving his community. He and his wife, Tracy, have been married for 16 years and are raising their four children — Morgan, Brycen, Ethan, and Ally — in their hometown, where they are active members of St. Marys Catholic Church.

Before joining Paulding Putnam, Al spent his entire career with Woolace Electric Corp, working his way through several roles and ultimately serving as a project manager in commercial and industrial settings. Now stepping into his role at Paulding Putnam, he will oversee the warehouse, fleet, facilities, dispatch, and more. ELECTRIC & INTERNET Nick “Eddy” Edwards is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with five years of service. He recently relocated from Texas and is eager to grow his career in both broadband and the electric industry. Originally from a large family — he’s the oldest of four and the only boy — Eddy now lives in rural Defiance County with his fiancée, whom he met during her visit to Texas. One visit turned into three years, and eventually, a move to Ohio.

Eddy’s professional background includes serving as an 0311 Infantryman in the Marine Corps, where he traveled across Africa, Europe, and Asia. After completing his service, he attended lineman school to prepare for a future in the power industry and to strengthen his path toward apprenticeship programs. Now at Paulding Putnam, he is helping bring fiber internet directly to members’ homes while continuing to learn about the electric side of cooperative operations.

Eddy looks forward to contributing to expanding fiber services. Outside of work, he enjoys fishing, hunting, shooting sports, and watching college football — proudly cheering, “Hook ’em Horns!” And while he’s prepared for many things, he’s bracing for his very first Ohio winter. Guided by a motto he grew up with — “Work for what you want” — Eddy brings determination, humility, and a strong work ethic to the team.

As one of the friendly faces at the front desk, Ashley helps members with questions, calls, and payments — all while bringing genuine enthusiasm and a love for helping others.

Ashley lives in Paulding with her dad, Mark, while her mom, Kim, resides in Tennessee. She also has a brother, Clay, who lives in Antwerp with his two daughters. And of course, her cat, Louis — who she admits runs the house — is very much part of the family too.

ASHLEY JUSTINGER

Before joining Paulding Putnam, Ashley worked in commercial lending and has several years of customer service experience. Drawn to the co-op’s positive reputation and the exciting growth happening, she knew this was the right place to build her career. In her role, she’ll be assisting members at the front desk and over the phone, making sure every member feels supported and welcomed.

Outside of work, Ashley enjoys gardening, tending to her veggie patch, composting, walking, reading, exploring genealogy, and spending time with friends and family. She’s also a big music fan — she once saw Harry Styles from the front row at Madison Square Garden. Guided by the lighthearted motto, “Life’s a garden, dig it,” Ashley brings positivity, curiosity, and a people-first mindset to the front office.

With more than 15 years of IT experience, Dustin is ready to help bring fast, reliable fiber internet to the communities we serve. He and his wife of 14 years, Megan, live outside Ottoville with their four children — Natalie, Jake, David, and Maxwell — who keep the family busy with soccer, volleyball, cross country, Boy Scouts, and 4-H.

Before joining Paulding Putnam, Dustin spent 15 years at Alliance Automation in Van Wert as a network administrator, handling everything from tech support and network building to troubleshooting and security. Now, he’s stepping into a key role as network engineer for fiber service and hopes to pitch in on other IT projects throughout the co-op whenever possible. Drawn to the mission and impact of the fiber project, Dustin is excited to be part of something that will make a meaningful difference for local homes and businesses.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family and friends — playing board and card games, relaxing at the lake, and cheering on the Buckeyes during football season. He also enjoys tech tinkering, 3D home design projects, and unwinding with movies or music. A fun fact: His favorite TV show is MASH, and he can even teach square dancing — something that played a big role in how he met his wife. He lives by a lighthearted Sidney Freedman quote from MASH: “Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice — pull down your pants and slide on the ice,” reminding him not to take life too seriously.

Celebrating service and new beginnings he joined the Van Wert Soil and Water Conservation District as a district technician, and since 2010, he has served as the NRCS District Conservationist for Paulding and Van Wert Counties.

Paulding Putnam would like to thank Brenda Ball for her dedicated service on the L-R: Former ORU trustee Brenda Ball and Operation Round current trustee Paul Strack volunteer at Up Board. Brenda Member Appreciation Day last July. represented District 3 (Putnam County) from 2018 to 2025, helping to allocate funds that made a lasting impact across our service territory.

At the October 2025 board meeting, ORU Board Chairman Philip Rolsten welcomed Ken Kottenbrock as the new District 3 trustee.

Ken has been a Paulding Putnam member since 1998 and brings a wealth of experience in agriculture, conservation, and community service. A lifelong Putnam County resident, Ken grew up on his family farm and graduated from Ottawa-Glandorf High School in 1991. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in agriculture with a minor in economics from The Ohio State University in 1995.

After college, Ken began his career as a sales representative and customer applicator for the Terra Latty Plant. In 2000,

The Operation Round Up Board of Trustees meets quarterly to review grant applications and allocate funds to local projects based on need, community impact, and available funds.

Piece by piece

Mosaic maestros give new life to old spaces by turning recycled materials into works of art.

W

hat do a church, a brewery, and an elementary school have in common? Each is home to art installations created by the Artifactory, a partnership between two Delaware County artists who work with those groups to create intricate mosaic pieces from recycled materials. They can be butterflies, birds, flowers, portraits, or abstracts, but each tells a unique story.

“We take old, recycled materials and break them up,” says Lynda Elias, a retired art teacher who founded the Artifactory at Delaware Mosaics along with fellow retired teacher Virginia Corwin. “Then we create something new and special from it — it’s truly beautiful to see. And it’s different every time, depending on the materials used and the light that is reflected from the mosaic.”

Elias attended the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. After she retired, she returned to Philadelphia for a visit and was inspired by large mosaics on the sides of many of the buildings and knew it was a technique she wanted to learn and take with her to Delaware.

Now she and Corwin teach groups in central Ohio and beyond to create those free-form mosaics that are then installed as permanent works of art.

A project begins when an organization in the community reaches out to the artists with ideas for a mosaic. Elias and Corwin meet with the group to develop a design, but it’s the group’s responsibility to gather recycled materials (or make their own tiles) to be used in the project. Once the ceramics and mirror pieces are ready, Elias draws the design on a cement board or a wall. Broken tiles are added, piece by piece. “It’s like building a puzzle,” she says.

The groups use the Zagar method, created by Philadelphia artist Isaiah Zagar. The traditional mosaic method involves placing materials in wet cement to make a design or a picture and then allowing it to dry. The Zagar method places the tiles and recycled materials on a flat surface and then adds grout around them.

Elias and her daughter, who is also a teacher, attended a workshop given by Isaiah Zagar. “I wanted to do this

to show people that everyone can create something. I teach people this easy method as a way of expressing themselves. They can do something to make the community more beautiful,” says Elias.

The interactive aspect of creating a mosaic has always been important to Corwin, who has 40 years of experience teaching and counseling children with special needs. “The process brings people together,” she says. “It encourages collaborative creativity and interaction.”

Elias and Corwin work with teachers and students at schools in the region as part of their art classes, to prepare large mosaics to be installed at the schools.

“They get to use hammers to break things and use dangerous materials to make art. It’s empowering,” Corwin says.

At Wickliffe Progressive Elementary in Upper Arlington, for example, students created “Beatles Garden” to honor the school’s late principal and his love for Beatles music. Each large mosaic represents a different Beatles song, including “Yellow Submarine” (in the bottom photo on the opposite page) and “Here Comes the Sun” (top photo, this page).

Students selected the songs and created the mosaics as part of their curriculum.

Wickliffe’s art teacher, Lindsay Bennett, invited Elias and Corwin to the school because she saw the project as one that would include every student in every grade level.

“This project was fun and meaningful for all our students, who have a wide range of abilities. From kindergarten through fifth grade, everyone was to participate.”

The artists take pride in building connections through their art. “We want the mosaics in our community to be accessible and enjoyed by all people,” says Corwin.
