Welcome to the inaugural edition of our green publication, Believe. This new communication tool is brought to you by the Oklahoma Health Center Foundation to promote the happenings at the Oklahoma Health Center and bring you the latest information about our member organizations.

Since 2000, more than $534 million in construction costs has been invested on the campus. In 2013, the OHC employee and OUHSC student count is approximately 18,000 making it one of the largest employers in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Health Center is the premier address for research, patient care, education, technology and community health support. Located conveniently in the heart of Oklahoma City, this remarkable 300-acre complex unites 25 medical-related organizations ranging from cutting-edge biotechnology companies to government, education, patient care and community support institutions. In 1984, a gallon of gas was $1.10 and a movie ticket could be purchased for $2.50, the good ole days. Something wonderful also came into existence that year – a way for families to stay close to their children while undergoing medical care in the Oklahoma City area. Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Oklahoma City opened and served 360 families that year and has served 20,000 families over the last 30 years.

By providing lodging, meals and laundry facilities, the Ronald McDonald House® helps relieve some of the financial burdens and stress for families during difficult times. The supportive and positive environment at the House allows families to focus on helping their children heal.

The comforts of home are available year-round at the main Ronald McDonald House location at 1301 Northeast 14th Street and offers such amenities as 15 bedrooms with private bathrooms, double kitchen, dining room, two laundry rooms, computer room, a large playroom and two additional living areas.

Milestone Anniversary and Ground Breaking

The new Ronald McDonald House will be built in Garrison Tower and is expected to cost about $1.5 million. Garrison Tower is adjacent to The Children’s Hospital. It will have a living room area, a large kitchen and laundry facilities. Families can keep their own food in the kitchen using the refrigerator and freezer. Volunteers will be on hand to cook meals for house residents. An entertainment area is also available for the families to unwind.

This new addition will double RMHC’s capacity to serve even more families. With 14 bedrooms, the 10,000 square foot house is expected to be open by the end of 2014.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room® inside The Children’s Hospital In 2008, The Ronald McDonald Family Room opened and is a relaxing retreat inside The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center on the sixth floor. The Family Room provides a home-like atmosphere within the hospital where families with inpatient children can have an oasis of calm and normalcy amidst the sometimes stressful, medical setting.

While dealing with the uncertainty of illness or injury, parents of critically ill and injured children are often reluctant to leave the hospital. The Ronald McDonald Family Room offers all the comforts of home where families can eat, sleep and relax, while being only steps away from their children.

The Family Room staff and volunteers provide comfort, support and friendship for the families while they endure the most difficult times of their lives.

Ronald McDonald Family Room Amenities The almost 2,500 square feet area contains a living area, kitchen, quiet room with computer access, office area, laundry room and two bathrooms with showers. It also has four bedrooms available for families of inpatient children to check in daily for naps or later for overnight stays. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

National Cancer Institute Recognizes Stephenson Cancer Center With Lead Academic Site Status In National Clinical Trials Network

National Designation OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahomans will have access to the newest cutting-edge therapies, thanks to the Stephenson Cancer Center’s designation as a Lead Academic Site by the National Cancer Institute in its new National Clinical Trials Network.

Lead Academic Sites form the centerpiece of the National Cancer Institute’s new strategy to conduct highimpact clinical trials and deliver new therapies to cancer patients. The Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center is one of only 30 Lead Academic Sites nationwide to be selected as a primary location for conducting this highimpact clinical research.

Lead Academic Site designation is awarded through a federal research grant that will bring over $6 million in funding to Oklahoma over the next five years. This designation establishes the Stephenson as a national center of excellence in conducting innovative clinical trials research.

“This new grant is a recognition that the Stephenson Cancer Center is taking its place among the leading cancer centers in the nation,” said OU President David L. Boren.

The Stephenson Cancer Center was selected as a Lead Academic Site through a highly competitive process evaluating the Stephenson’s scientific contributions at a national level along with its ability to conduct highquality clinical trials research. Robert Mannel, MD, Stephenson Cancer Center director, serves as principal investigator for the grant. Scott McMeekin, MD, Deputy Director for Clinical Research, serves as the grant’s coprincipal investigator.

“Lead Academic Site designation in the National Clinical Trials Network ensures that all Oklahomans will have access to the latest drugs being developed by the National Cancer Institute to battle cancer,” stated Mannel. “It means that the Stephenson will be at the table

in the National Cancer Institute’s effort to develop precision medicines based on genetic mutations unique to each person and that target tumors at a molecular level.

“This designation is ultimately due to the Stephenson Cancer Center’s dedicated physicians and staff, who are committed to raising the standard of care through research and education, and to cancer patients in Oklahoma, who choose to participate in clinical trials and, in so doing, help not only themselves but all who fight cancer,” Mannel said.

Key collaborators in this effort include the State of Oklahoma, which established the Stephenson Cancer Center in 2001, and the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, which provides major support for innovative cancer research being conducted at the Stephenson. Others include Oklahoma’s philanthropic and corporate communities, who have generously supported research at the Stephenson Cancer Center.

About the Stephenson Cancer Center The Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center is the state’s only comprehensive academic cancer center. The Stephenson Cancer Center houses more than 50 oncology physicians who specialize in the treatment of all types of cancer and who provide patient-centered care to Oklahomans. In association with the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, the Stephenson Cancer Center is working to decrease the burden of cancer in Oklahoma by supporting innovative laboratory, clinical and populations-based research across the state.

The Stephenson Cancer Center has more than 160 research members who are conducting over 100 cancer research projects. This research is supported by more than $25 million in annual funding from the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society and other sponsors.

Fallin signs measure to authorize suicide prevention training in schools 8

Life-Saving Legislation

OKLAHOMA CITY – Legislation authorizing school boards to adopt policies concerning suicide awareness and training, and the reporting of student drug abuse, was signed into law.

Nevertheless, the measure also decrees that upon determining that a student is at risk of attempting suicide, school teachers, administrators and counselors must notify the youth’s parents/guardians immediately.

House Bill 1623 by Rep. Kay Floyd, D-Oklahoma City, and Sen. A.J. Griffin, R-Guthrie, allows training for teachers and students in grades 7 through 12 into how to recognize danger signals and prevent suicide. The state Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (DMHSAS) “shall develop and make available to school districts” the curriculum, at no cost to the schools, HB 1623 provides.

The bill passed unanimously in both the House and the Senate and was signed Wednesday by the governor.

“Having the 13th highest rate of suicide in the nation is unacceptable,” Floyd said. “I am grateful to the members of both legislative chambers and to the governor for acknowledging the seriousness of this issue and supporting this measure.”

Oklahoma has the 13th highest suicide rate, per capita, in the nation, Floyd said. In comparison, Texas ranks 41st. “We also are higher than Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri,” she said.

Floyd is a founding member and vice president of the board of directors for the Justice Alma Wilson SeeWorth Academy, which was established in 1998 and serves 485 at-risk youth in Oklahoma City.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death nationwide among young people 10 to 24 years of age, Floyd said. In Oklahoma, 111 young people in that age group died by their own hands in 2012, and 91 killed themselves in 2011, State Health Department records reflect.

Oklahoma’s suicide rate increased 20 percent from 2004 through 2010, Floyd added. Suicide is the most common manner of violent death in this state, the Health Department reports. There are 2½ times more suicides than homicides, data show.

Starting with the 2014-15 school year, every school district in the state may offer a suicide awareness and prevention training program selected from a list maintained by the DMHSAS. HB 1623 says that school districts may contract with designated youth services agencies to provide suicide intervention and prevention services locally.

I’m a Southwest Oklahoma girl from Lawton, Oklahoma.

Married my high school sweetheart Greg and we have much fondness for home, the Wichita Mountains, McCracken Road and Wayne’s Drive-In! Education?

Cooking – chocolate chip cookies and brownies are therapy; creating chaos with home and garden projects; listening to Erin’s first CD and watching my boys play golf – while I sip on my favorite beverage – iced tea in the summer and a skinny mocha in the winter.

What is something about you most people don’t know?

High School All State Vocalist, started college as a vocal music major on scholarship, Miss Lawton 1974, play piano.

What brought you to your current field?

It’s a long story, but it all goes back to being a volunteer first. I was working for an oil company in accounting and serving as a volunteer for OCU. Because I was raising money for events, OCU tagged me for a development position. I began professional development work in 1983 at OCU and then on to Children’s Hospital Foundation since 1998.

What is a typical work day like for you?

Meetings, writing, proofing and signing documents!!!

I start every morning around 5:30-6:00 listen to news, check my emails, grab a black tea and a probiotic bar on the way out the door usually on the phone all the way – hands-free, of course. Days are full with strategies on fundraising and other ways to help pediatric researchers. This year… abundant work advocating for children’s programming needs legislatively – many are severely underfunded. Hospital tours, meeting families, strategies on getting our story out and plans for our board meetings and events. Most productive planning time is between 4-7 pm with final responses to emails around midnight.

What are some things about your organization people might not realize or know?

We are an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit located on the OHC campus, raising funds and awareness for pediatric programs…but we are neither employed nor operated by OUHSC or Children’s Hospital. We rely 100% on private donations. Our team is made up of 14.5 staff members, 28 volunteer board members and over 3,000 volunteers statewide. We just established a statewide Board of Advocates, currently with 85 members.

The VA Medical Center and clinics treat nearly 40,000 veterans on an outpatient basis annually, accounting for more than 300,000 visits. The Medical Center provides care for almost 5,000 of those annually in an inpatient setting.

The hospital’s mission it to develop an integrated healthcare delivery system which improves the health of the category A veteran population by providing primary care, specialized care, extended care and related social support services.

The VA Medical Center has a 222-bed General Medical and Surgical Hospital and Healthcare Center; a 40 bed Extended Care Unit; 27 bed Friendship House, 14 bed Hospitality Unit for a total of 289 authorized beds. With an emphasis on outpatient care, the Center reduced the average daily inpatient census from 204.2 in 1995 to 116.5 in 2000. During the same time, outpatient visits rose from 228,910 in 1995 to 306,388 in 2000.

The VA Medical Center’s 1,508 dedicated employees provide expertise and direction in patient care, medical education and clinical research. How is an allergist different than a regular physician? An allergist is a doctor who is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases and conditions. Those conditions include asthma and frequent coughing; hay fever; sinus infections; eye allergies; reactions to food, insect stings and drugs; skin allergies including eczema and hives and immune system problems that might cause frequent infections. You should see an allergist if you have any of these conditions.

More than 50 million people in the United States have these allergic diseases. Although symptoms may not always be severe, allergies and asthma are serious and should be treated that way. Many people with these diseases simply don’t realize how much better they can feel with proper treatment.

An allergist is trained to find the source of symptoms, treat it and help patients feel healthy. After earning a medical degree, the doctor must complete a three-year residency-training program in either internal medicine or pediatrics. Volunteer blood donors give more than a 287,000 units of blood annually to provide a safe and adequate blood supply. Blood donors with Oklahoma Blood Institute know they are, literally, saving the lives of their friends, family and coworkers, some who may have no idea they will need blood in an urgent situation. One blood donation can save as many as three peoples’ lives.

OBI is responsible for recruiting blood donors, collecting, processing and testing blood components and transporting it to hospitals across our state. OUR HISTORY In 1919, a group of Oklahoma physicians returning from World War I, decided a new form of health care was needed in the Oklahoma City area. This practice, they believed would enable them to improve the efficiency and quality of care for their patients.

The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services is responsible for providing services to Oklahomans who are affected by mental illness and substance abuse. In fiscal year 2008, the department provided services to 64,465 individuals – an increase of nearly 3,600 individuals over the previous year.

The demand for public mental health services exceeds the capacity of the current treatment system. This has always been the case, but has been exacerbated in recent years due to a growing public awareness of mental illness and of the existence of effective treatment; rising healthcare costs; and the state’s growing substance abuse problem, particularly the brain-damaging use of methamphetamine and resultant psychotic behavior.

Through the use of proven practices and expansion of community based services, the department will increase the effectiveness of services and continue to improve the efficiency of the delivery system. The department’s goal is to ensure access to appropriate care for all Oklahomans and the recovery of all served.

The ODMHSAS was established through the Mental Health Law of 1953, although publicly supported services to Oklahomans with mental illness date back to early statehood. Until the mid-1960s, the primary means to treat mental illness was institutionalization in large state hospitals. On an average day in 1960, nearly 6,400 Oklahomans were in the state’s mental hospitals.

In the mid-1970s, the concept of “deinstitutionalization” prompted states to increase efforts to utilize outpatient services through Community Mental Health Centers. This approach has proven to be an effective means of recovery and a less costly method to provide services as compared to long-term inpatient care in a hospital setting.

Today, over 60,000 individuals receive services from the department each year. Of those, only about 5 percent require hospital care. The vast majority take part in mental health and substance abuse outpatient programs, targeted community based services, prevention efforts and educational initiatives.

In fact, Oklahoma has become a national leader in several areas of community based services including the implementation of programs for assertive community treatment, alternative criminal justice initiatives such as drug and mental health courts, and comprehensive services for children and families.

In many ways, Oklahoma already is “ahead of the curve” in terms of treatment success for people with mental illness or substance abuse problems. With a focus on community-based and proven practices, and emphasis on treatment across the lifespan, from children to the elderly, more Oklahomans with mental illness and substance abuse problems are being served than ever before.

OSSM is Oklahoma’s public, tuition-free, residential high school for juniors and seniors with exceptional abilities in mathematics and science.

The school’s residency program is designed to encourage an atmosphere of informal interaction among peers and foster each student’s highest potential. The availability of laboratories, along with evening and weekend programs of interest, challenge students and stimulate studies.

OSSM was created by the Oklahoma Legislature in 1983 and is funded by the state. The school is governed by a Board of Trustees, which is appointed by legislative leaders and the governor. Although the history of the school is grand, the wonderfully gifted students are at the heart of OSSM. Since its inception 22 years ago, students have matriculated from all of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.

The campus is located on a 32-acre site near the state capitol and adjacent to the teaching and scientific research resources of the Oklahoma Health Center. In the summer of 2000, the school completed a $25 million campus building program. The classrooms and offices of the historic Lincoln School were restored through a unique partnership with Oklahoma patrons, organizations, businesses and government entities and is now called the Manning Academic Center. Students live in the school’s Dan Little Residence Hall that accommodates 144 students and faculty families. OSSM also has a gymnasium, Bernice Shedrick Library and Samson Science and Discovery Center, which houses physics and chemistry laboratories. The dormitory has expanded to allow the school to house 100+plus additional students per year should funding become available from the state to ensure the school’s future and keep the dream alive for Oklahoma’s best and brightest students.

OSSM is committed to building a strong academic foundation for each student. While in residence at OSSM, students are required to complete successfully four and one-half units of science, two units of mathematics, one-half unit of computer science, two units of English, two units of history, two units of a foreign language, one unit of fine arts, and two units of physical education.

Each science class features a two-or-three-hour weekly laboratory experience. Students receive five and onehalf days of academic instruction every week. Students must also receive satisfactory participation reports in both campus and community service and a total of 120 hours are required for graduation.

The graduates of OSSM have already left their indelible marks on Oklahoma. Of the more than 1,300 OSSM graduates since the first class, 300 are engineers and nearly 100 are medical doctors. More than 50 have earned Ph.D.s and 75 have served in the U.S. armed forces. Eighty-five percent of these graduates have careers in science, math, engineering and technology. More than half now work or live in the state and 10 graduates have begun their own businesses in Oklahoma.

From the time you get up in the morning till you go to bed at night, public health is involved in your life: • When you got up this morning, you made food choices for breakfast. We provide you messages on healthy food choices.

• You have a yearning for that cigarette you are trying to give up. We work with the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline to help you quit smoking.

• Hopefully, you brushed your teeth. We work with communities to fluoridate water supplies.

• You got in the car and buckled in your children, put the baby in the car seat, and buckled your own seatbelt. We encourage seat belt use and provide car seats to those who need them.

• You dropped the kids off at school. All should have their mandated immunizations to protect them from childhood diseases. We provide immunizations.

• You go to work where most of your colleagues seem to be sick. We investigate disease outbreaks.

• You go to lunch at a local restaurant. We inspect food service facilities.

• You decide not to go back to work – since everyone’s sick anyway – so you think you’ll get that tattoo you’ve been dreaming about. We license tattoo artists.

• You decide to visit your grandmother to show off your new tattoo. She’s at a local nursing facility. We license nursing homes.

• You pick the kids up from the after-school program.

It’s one that works with the health department to

provide lots of physical activity and healthy snacks.

• You stop off at the grocery store where you see a friend selecting fresh fruits and produce. You know she’s on WIC, the special nutrition program for women, infants and children. We administer the program.

• You start to prepare dinner. You wash your fruits and vegetables to help prevent contamination from E. coli bacteria. The Public Health Laboratory analyzes food specimens during foodborne illness outbreaks.

• Your sister calls and says she has enrolled in the Children First program. This is a special nurse visitation program provided by county health departments to visit first-time mothers in their home and teach them about caring for their new baby.

• After dinner you go for a walk and let the kids ride their bikes. Public health partners with communities to encourage safe sidewalks and bike trails to promote physical activity.

• While outside, you make sure everyone has used insect repellent containing DEET to prevent mosquito bites and tick bites. We investigate cases of West Nile virus caused by mosquito bites, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, caused by tick bites.

• You put the baby to bed in a crib that meets current federal safety standards and is free of bumper pads so the baby cannot suffocate. You place the baby on its back, the safest position. We provide education on child safety.

• On the 10 o’clock television news, you learn that HIV continues to be of concern in Oklahoma. Public health provides testing for HIV. • Overnight, a tornado hits your community. When you turn on the radio the next morning, you hear messages that your local health department will be providing tetanus shots for those involved in the cleanup.

So indeed, public health is at work every day to keep Oklahomans healthy!

What is the next exciting thing coming up for your organization?

In 30 years, we have raised funds and leveraged those funds with state matching to create $70 million in endowed chairs at the OU Foundation for pediatric specialists, in addition to $30 million raised for equipment, renovations, small grants, scholarships, community education and awareness programs and various support programs for pediatric researchers and educators. Our Children’s Miracle Network campaign ranks in the top 25 out of 170 campaigns in the US and Canada, and this campaign continues to grow.

What are the current challenges your organization is facing and what steps are you taking to address these challenges?

The Oklahoma matching funds program for endowments from the early 1990’s through 2008, helped us create major significant research programs, and with the loss of that program and no new state funds to create new and critical pediatric research programs, we are looking to the private sector to invest in research to improve the health of Oklahoma’s children. Because our doors stay open only due to private donations, we constantly look for new ways to raise funds and create awareness about our programs and needs. And, because of greater costs of medical care, research and education, the need is greater.

Where do you see your organization five years from now?

Financially, we expect to double our fundraising by 2018 and we have a strategy in place to triple our funds by 2022. Even unforeseen setbacks with the economy, which we have weathered before, we expect significant growth. One important goal is to make Children’s Hospital a household name and a first place of mind for children’s health care and community donations.

Today, surveys show that if a person is asked where they would give a dollar to help a sick child, the “third” response is their local children’s hospital – we want to be #1 in the hearts and minds of Oklahomans and we want to ensure that the community knows how our pediatric programs are making a significant difference in the lives of Oklahoma’s children.

2013: 12TH ANNUAL KXY LOVES KIDS RADIOTHON, was held NOV. 14-15 and KXY 96.1 FM morning DJ Bill Reed conducted on-air interviews with Miracle Kids who are dedicated to speaking and raising awareness about the importance of research, education and clinical care through fundraising efforts in Oklahoma. The community was encouraged to call in and pledge a donation to support Oklahoma pediatrics through Children’s Hospital Foundation.
