Welcome to Skills & Learning Adult Community Education – the local authority adult learning service for Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and Dorset

I am Sarah Rice, Head of Curriculum, Quality and Business and it is my privilege to oversee a diverse range of programmes designed to unlock your potential and support your personal and professional growth.

Everyone who enrols on an adult learning course has a different motivation and a different starting point Whether you are looking to develop new skills for life or work, improve your confidence, get support to advance your career, better help your children or community or do something different with your time, our dedicated, experienced and well qualified teaching and support staff are here to guide and support you every step of the way

For over 25 years, we have been delivering adult education across Dorset, working with communities, partners, and employers to change lives through learning

Courses which broadly develop career and employability skills are free for learners earning less than £25,750 but those on higher incomes will pay a fee Courses include:

You may qualify for: Advanced Learner Loans or an Instalment plan

Most learners aged 19+ studying at Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 will qualify for these loans from the UK government It’s easy to apply and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £25,000 a year.

To qualify you must be:

If you want to improve your maths skills for work, further study, to support your children with their homework, or to simply make everyday life a bit easier, then you’ve come to the right place.

A GCSE Maths course supports you to build a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and problemsolving skills, helping you gain a widely recognised qualification for work or higher education

Designed for adults aged 19+ who haven’t yet achieved a grade A*-C (9–4), this 9-month intensive course follows the AQA Foundation syllabus and covers key topics such as number, algebra, geometry, and statistics.

Courses start in September, with experienced tutors guiding you through to the summer exams Regular homework and independent study are essential to your success.

This Functional Skills Maths course is a practical and engaging option for adults who haven’t yet gained a maths qualification. It’s ideal for improving job prospects, accessing further study, or supporting family learning. You’ll build confidence through real-life problem solving, covering key topics like fractions, percentages, measurement, and data handling Learning includes group work, tutor support, and independent study, with regular assessments and a final exam to track your progress

Aimed at adults who haven’t yet achieved a GCSE grade A*-C (9–4) in maths, this Functional Skills maths course helps you develop practical maths skills for work, further education, and everyday life. Through a mix of classroom learning, tutor support, and independent study, you’ll build confidence with numbers, measurements, and data The course includes regular homework and assessments, leading up to a final exam A strong commitment to home study is essential for success

Fast-Track Maths: Level 1 & 2 - 23 weeks

This fast-paced and supportive Functional Skills maths course is for adults aged 19+ who haven’t yet achieved a GCSE grade A*-C (9–4) in maths It’s designed to build confidence and ability in everyday maths, supporting career goals, further study, or helping family with their learning. You’ll explore key topics such as decimals, percentages, measurements, and data handling, while developing strong problem-solving and study skills. Learning is varied and interactive, with regular homework and assessments leading up to a final exam Independent study is essential for success

Get Ready for Maths - 12 weeks

This popular and interesting maths course is for adults over the age of 19 who have not already achieved a L2 qualification in maths. This course will help you prepare for joining a Functional Skills accredited course in September

GCSE English - 30 weeks

This course will develop your reading, writing, critical thinking, and analytical skills, all whilst strengthening your communication abilities You'll gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the power of language and literature. This course allows you to gain a widely recognised academic qualification for work or higher education.

Courses start in September and our tutors will guide you through the course content to help you prepare to sit exams in the summer

Achieve Your English: Level 1 & 2 - 33 weeks

Achieve Your English: Level 1 & 2 is a practical and engaging course for adults aged 19+ who haven’t yet achieved GCSE English at grades A*-C (9-4) It’s designed to build confidence and skills in reading, writing, and communication, helping you improve job prospects or progress to further or higher education Through a mix of tutor-led sessions, group activities, discussions, and written assignments, you’ll develop essential skills like grammar, punctuation, comprehension, and speaking and listening. Regular assessments and a final exam are part of the course, and significant home study is required to succeed.

Fast-Track English: Level 1 & 2 - 24 weeks

Fast-Track English: Level 1 & 2 is an intensive course for adults aged 19+ who have not yet achieved GCSE English at grades A*-C (9–4) It’s designed to build essential skills in reading, writing, and communication to support career progression or entry into further or higher education You’ll take part in tutor-led sessions, group activities, discussions, and written tasks, with a strong focus on grammar, spelling, comprehension, and speaking and listening. Regular assessments and a final exam are included, and consistent home study is essential for successful completion.

Get Ready for English - 12 weeks

Get Ready for English is a lively and supportive course for adults aged 19+ who have not yet achieved a Level 2 English qualification It’s designed to help you build confidence in reading, writing, and communication, and prepare you to progress onto a Functional Skills English course in September. You’ll develop key skills like grammar, spelling, comprehension, and speaking and listening through engaging activities, including group work, discussions, media resources, and written tasks. The course also supports the development of good study habits and workplace-relevant skills. To succeed, regular home study is essential

Achieve Your English: Entry Level - 33 weeks

This popular and interesting Functional Skills English course is for adults over the age of 19 who have not already attained GCSE English grades A*- C (9-4), where achievement of it is useful to enhance career prospects and access Further or Higher Education

This fast-paced 30-week course prepares you to take the GCSE Biology exam You’ll explore key scientific concepts, investigations, and data analysis alongside other learners, whilst developing practical skills through experiments, planning, data interpretation and evaluation Learning activities include tutor demonstrations, hands on work, group discussions, Q&A, research and project work. You’ll also build valuable skills for work, as well as improve your English and Maths through activities linked to GCSE Biology Regular home study is essential, and your tutor will support you with study skills and keeping on track This is a vocational, publicly funded course, and all assignments and exams must be completed by set deadlines

Please note this GCSE course has two exams which are mandatory to attend Exams are held between May and June 2026. You will need to be available on these exam days and be able to travel to Poole. Learning English in a relaxed, friendly class can help you to understand and talk to others. This makes everyday life easier and boosts confidence. ESOL Conversation Classes

ESOL Conversation Classes offer a friendly, informal environment where learners can practise speaking English, build confidence and learn new vocabulary and phrases through everyday conversation As learners progress to higher levels, these sessions increasingly focus on understanding and using conversational English and more natural expressions used in daily life.

Everyday ESOL focuses on practical English skills needed for daily life, helping learners with limited English improve their ability to communicate effectively in common situations

ICT for Beginners A & ICT for Beginners B - 6 weeks

ICT for Beginners A requires no previous ICT experience. It also suits those with outdated skills or anyone wanting to build confidence before progressing to higher-level courses The course results in a City and Guilds Entry 2 level qualification in Employability Skills

ICT for Beginners B follows on from our ICT for Beginners A course It further develops learners' confidence with ICT systems The course also results in a City and Guilds Entry 3 level qualification in Employability Skills.

Digital Functional Skills Entry 3 - 19 weeks

This third course in our programme, for those who’ve completed IT for Beginners A and B, is an examined course covering five key areas: using devices, creating and editing, communicating, transacting online, and staying safe Learners sit an online exam at the end of the course to achieve a formal qualification

Digital Functional Skills Level 1 - 19 weeks

This course builds on Entry Level 3, helping learners gain confidence and fluency with digital tools It highlights the importance of digital skills in work and daily life, with practical tasks that prepare learners for further study or employment Learners sit an online exam at the end of the course to achieve a formal qualification

Digital and IT Skills - Gateway Level 2 Award - 16 weeks

This structured ICT course helps learners build advanced digital skills for work or home use. It focuses on creating professional documents using word processing tools and developing spreadsheet skills in Excel, including advanced formulas and automation. Learners build a portfolio over the course to achieve a formal qualification

Master your Android Phone or Tablet & iPhone or iPad - 6 weeks

This course introduces the basics of using smartphones and tablets, including setup, charging, and adjusting settings It covers email, using the camera to take and share photos or videos, installing and organising apps, and understanding online safety and privacy

Word 365 - Introduction - Intermediate - Advanced - 2 weeks

These are three separate two-week courses, each tailored to different levels of Microsoft Word 365 experience The Introduction course helps beginners create simple documents like letters and reports The Intermediate course builds on existing skills with added features, while the Advanced course helps experienced users master tools to automate tasks and improve efficiency Participants can choose the course that best matches their level and goals

Excel 365 - Introduction - Intermediate - Advanced - 2 weeks

These are three separate two-week courses tailored to different experience levels The Introduction course helps beginners learn the basics to confidently create and edit spreadsheets and charts The Intermediate course is for those with some experience, offering a deeper look at Excel’s features and functions. The Advanced course is ideal for regular users wanting to develop their skills in data analysis and advanced tools. Choose the course that best matches your current level and learning goals

Digital Marketing on-line learning 2- 6 months

This beginner-friendly online course provides a solid foundation in digital marketing, covering key areas such as social media, email marketing, websites, and search engine optimisation. Designed for those new to the field, it explores how digital channels can be used to connect with customers, promote products and services, and support business growth. The course includes five units: Social Media for Business, Email as a Promotional Tool, Digital Marketing Review, Understanding Search Engine Optimisation, and Digital Marketing for Business

Our Counselling courses are designed to help you develop the essential skills and qualities needed to support others effectively Counsellors play a vital role in promoting mental health and wellbeing by helping clients explore their thoughts, feelings, and choices, to make positive changes in their lives

Whether you're exploring a new career or building on existing experience, our courses provide up-to-date knowledge and practical training Most learners start with the Introduction to Counselling and progress through Levels 2 and 3, leading to the Level 4 Diploma in Counselling. Successful completion of Level 4 qualifies you to work as a professional counsellor.

Our tutors are highly qualified, and many are practising counsellors. With dual-qualified professionals leading our programme, we offer a high-quality learning experience in a supportive and enriching environment.

This workshop offers a basic introduction to counselling, exploring the profession and outlining courses for those aiming to progress to the Level 1 Counselling Skills course or simply gain a better understanding of counselling skills

This Level 1 qualification course prepares learners for progressing to the Level 2 Counselling Skills course by teaching active listening skills and providing an introduction on how to support individuals in a client-based setting.

Beauty Therapies

Our Beauty, Nails and Spa courses are a great way to find a new passion, discover new job prospects or build on your existing skills. We offer courses covering all things beauty – from makeup and waxing to holistic massage.

Beauty Specialist Techniques - VTCT Level 2 Diploma - 31 weeks

The main aim of the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Specialist Techniques is to enable learners to gain the necessary practical skills and knowledge to provide beauty treatments to the general public and to gain employment in the beauty industry With the other learners in your class, you will gain the practical and theoretical skills required to provide professional beauty treatments in waxing, manicure and pedicure, facial skincare, eye treatments and make-up. You will also gain the necessary skills in client care, communication and health and safety. There are nine mandatory units to complete and a minimum of four optional units Learners are responsible for providing their own models for client assessment sessions

Nail Technology – VTCT Level 2 Certificate -22 weeks

This VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Nail Technology is designed to build your practical skills in providing and maintaining nail enhancements and manicure treatments, with a focus on developing high-level occupational ability for delivering salon-ready services You’ll gain essential knowledge of health and safety practices within a salon setting, alongside client care and communication skills relevant to the beauty industry. The course also covers key techniques such as gel polish application and nail art. Learners are responsible for providing their own models for client assessment sessions.

VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Beauty Therapy Studies (massage) - 23 weeks

VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Beauty Therapy Studies (Massage) is an occupational qualification that provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a massage therapist, either as an employee or in a self-employed work environment. The course includes training in Swedish massage techniques, Indian head massage, aromatherapy, and hot stone massage, equipping learners with a broad range of skills to meet client needs in various settings. Learners are responsible for providing their own models for client assessment sessions

Hairdressing and Barbering

Whether you have experience or not, we offer courses at various levels and abilities to support you in gaining knowledge and qualifications in hairdressing and barbering.

Barbering - VTCT Level 2 Certificate - 34 weeks

This qualification has been designed to develop a number of barbering skills to a high level of occupational ability and will prepare you to enter the men ’ s hairdressing sector.

Women's Hairdressing - VTCT Level 2 Certificate - 32 weeks

This qualification has been designed to enable learners to gain the necessary practical skills and knowledge to prepare learners for employment as a junior hairdresser/stylist.

Hairdressing - VTCT Level 3 Certificate - 30 weeks

VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of hairdressing techniques.

Distance Learning Courses

Distance learning courses are online and flexible, letting you study at your own pace and on your own schedule, ideal if you have work or caring commitments. You'll get access to an online platform, full guidance, and support from a tutor who provides feedback, helps with challenges, and tracks your progress toward completing the course.

Level 2 Courses

This qualification is designed for anyone looking to develop their understanding of mental health and the problems that can cause mental ill health. In each of the 13 units, you will gain an understanding of a specific mental health topic, leading to a Level 2 qualification.

This 5-unit Level 2 childcare qualification allows learners to gain an understanding of how children’s development can be influenced by factors such as nutrition and the various safeguarding responsibilities of those who care for children and young people You will also discover the importance of activities, play and interaction, and learn how to contribute positively to the development of children and young people at different stages

The Level 2 Certificate in Information Advice and Guidance is ideal if you are frontline staff, work in a voluntary organisation, further education with adult or community groups, or with young people The course will develop your knowledge and understanding of the key principles of information, advice and guidance and how to apply these within your own context This 5-unit course will also be a good starting point if you are looking to develop a career in a “helping role” such as an employment advisor, debt advisor, learning support worker, peer mentor or similar

This Level 2 distance learning course will give you underpinning knowledge to enable you to progress within administrative job roles Successful completion of this course will also provide the skills and knowledge required for job roles in business support, customer services and other office-based roles Topics include business document production, information management, communication and developing working relationships

This 4-unit Level 2 course will provide you with the underpinning knowledge to enable you to work or progress within customer service job roles. Topics include communication, organisations and understanding customers.

This 7-unit Level 2 qualification is designed for learners who wish to develop an understanding of autism and how to support individuals with autism The qualification covers the person-centred approach and influence of positive communication methods. It also explores how to support positive behaviour and how individuals with autism can be supported to live healthy and fulfilled lives.

This 5-unit qualification is designed for learners who are interested in improving their understanding of children and young people’s mental health. This course focuses on mental health in context as well as practical ways to support children and young people’s mental health. Level 3 Courses

This course has been designed to support you in working in the Health and Social Care sector We suggest that you complete the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism before applying for this course in order to build your knowledge before progressing to Level 3 The course covers a range of topics, from the current legislative framework relating to individuals with autism to supporting communication and social interaction for individuals with autism

This in-depth 5-unit course is ideal for those who would like to increase their knowledge and understanding of mental health and well-being We suggest that you complete the Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems before applying for this course, in order to build your knowledge before progressing to Level 3 Successful completion of this course will provide many of the skills and knowledge required for job roles in mental health support or health and social care

REQUIREMENTS INFORMATION

A Level 2 or 3 distance learning course typically requires between 5 and 10 hours of study per week You will need to plan your study time around additional commitments

You should aim to complete your course in 6 months although it may be possible to achieve this earlier if you have more study time available.

Distance learning material can be studied at any time and in any location where you can access a PC, laptop or tablet and broadband You will need good IT skills and a regular and reliable internet connection

English language skills at Level 1 are required, you will therefore be asked to complete an online assessment in English after submitting your course application

After working for 10 years as a Personal Assistant (PA) in a salon, Georgia decided it was time for a new chapter She had been close to the world of hairdressing for years, but she took the leap to become a hairdresser herself In just 6 weeks, she completed our Introduction to Hairdressing course, mastering foundation skills and building the confidence to take her learning to the next level.

In September 2024, Georgia officially began her VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing with us. By July 2025, she had successfully completed the course and achieved her dream of becoming a professional hairdresser She’s now working as a New Talent stylist at William Guy’s Ringwood salon

Georgia not only completed her training with us she also won Apprentice of the Year at the Salon Awards 2024 for the Hampshire area, a testament to her dedication and talent.

Local Partnership Secures Work for Construction Sector Career Changers

A new partnership between Skills & Learning Adult Community Education (ACE), Whitehead Ross Education and Consulting (WREC), and Wates Construction successfully delivered a 'Build Your Career' programme, securing employment opportunities for local career changers to move into the construction sector.

The 'Build Your Career' programme was developed in response to a growing need for construction-related pre-employment training in the BCP area Wates Construction, with a strong social value policy, collaborated with local providers to create a comprehensive training programme aimed at unemployed adults and career changers.

Participants received hands-on employment and skills training provided by Skills & Learning ACE, including construction sector CV writing, interview preparation and information on construction job roles.

WREC provided Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card training at a local community centre in Bearwood Successful completion of the examination equip participants with the necessary CITB accredited health and safety card, and knowledge required to work across UK construction sites

Participants also received 5 free pieces of Personal Protective Equipment provided by Wates as well as the opportunity to visit their Hillbourne Project site in Poole, where they experienced a site tour and gained some real-world experience with their supply chain partners

Nicky Ellison, Project Manager for Skill Up BCP, said: "We are really proud to be part of this partnership of 3 innovative companies, Wates, Whitehead Ross and Skills & Learning playing to our strengths to optimise opportunities

Local Partnership Secures Work for Construction Sector Career Changers (Continued)

Emma Stewart, Skills Manager at Whitehead Ross Education, highlighted the organisations role in delivering CSCS card courses and supporting participants through their exams 'It has been fantastic to work in partnership with Wates and Skills & Learning to deliver the CSCS part of this initiative, and we are proud of the employment successes and opportunities as a direct result of the program for its participants.

Wates Construction acknowledged the importance of working with local providers. Katherine Jones, Social Value Manager for Wates, stated: "The 'Build Your Career' programme was built out of a need in the Poole community for construction-related pre-employment programmes. Together with Skills & Learning and Whitehead Ross, we created an initiative that empowers local unemployed adults."

The pilot programme, delivered over three weeks, was funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and has already shown promising results. Several participants have successfully progressed to second interviews with supply chain partners, and five participants have confirmed to receive jobs and will be starting on site soon, demonstrating the programme's effectiveness in addressing local employment needs

Helen Wilkins who together with Tiphaine McConnell trained the participants in how to tailor their CVs and how to approach construction interviews said “It was a real privilege to work with these participants, they were so keen to learn new skills, update others and support their move into a construction career.

The partnership has set a strong foundation for future initiatives, where leveraging each organisation's strengths has proven to provide valuable career opportunities and support supply chain organisations to recruit

We are always looking to foster collaborations with local employers and businesses to create more employment pathways We are particularly interested in working with employers who have job vacancies from the Health and Social Care, IT/Digital and Manufacturing sectors. We are already thinking about the next Build Your Career.
