Automatic Oil Sampling and Analysis Systems

TYPES OF SAMPLING SYSTEMS Sampling is a critical and essential step in the oil & gas industry. It can be referred to as a small part selected for the purpose of analysis/inspection. It is a process that involves taking a number of ‘grabs’ of a small volume of fluid over a pre-defined time period to establish a representation of the composition. It is important to keep in mind that in custody transfer applications, quality is as important as quantity.

Sampling systems including fast loop sampling systems that are designed to provide critical information about hydrocarbon product quality.

In the oil & gas industry, hydrocarbon liquids- condensates, crude oil, as well as oil and water mixtures are required to be sampled for producing representative samples for inspection. By using custom automatic oil sampling systems, one can comply with domestic as well as international standards inclusive of API MPMS 8.2

According to the standard API MPMS 8.2, there are two major sampling methods named:

1. In-line Automatic Sampler (Insertion Type Automatic Sampler) In-line automatic sampler which is also known as insertion type automatic sampler is considered to be the most effective of all when analyzers are not needed ‘per project specification’. It gets even more relevant when you have metering systems operated on periodic basis. That’s because it allows for maintenance work to be carried out between batches. In-line sampler is designed in such a way that it can be directly mounted on the pipeline that requires sampling.

2. Fast Loop Sampling System Fast loop sampling system is by far the best solution when it comes to applications in which fluid quality analyzers are mandatory. It is also the best sampling system to choose for pipelines that operate incessantly. Fast loop sampling system can be serviced without putting brakes on the on-going metering process because it bypasses the main line. Fast loop sampling systems are ideal for crude oil, refined hydrocarbon products and condensate. These systems are deployed with majority of metering systems. They are also used as stand-along units aimed at process control of product parameters.

Sampling and analyzer skid depends on project specification; however, mostly a typical one contains: Fast loop pumps, basket strainer equipped with removable filtering elements, liquid density meter, water-cut meter, viscosity transducer, sulfur analyzer, pressure and temperature transmitters as well as indicators, flow-meter, flow control valve, automatic samplers with sample receivers, process piping, drain system, valves, housing/shelter and control & automation.
