The family of Emantic “EJ” Bradford Jr., who died Thanksgiving night after he was shot by a police officerworking security at an Alabama mall, is calling on the Hoover Police Department to release the mall video, witness videos and body camera footage of Bradford’s death.

Initially, officials said Bradford was engaged in a fight with an 18-year-old at the Riverchase Galleria Mall in Hoover, Ala. when he pulled out a gun and shot the teen.

A 12-year-old bystander also was wounded that night. That night, police and city officials hailed the quick response as “heroic.”

But officials later retracted the statement, saying it was “highly unlikely” Bradford had fired the shots that injured two people.

In a statement early Monday, city and police officials said they can “say with certainty Mr. Bradford brandished a gun during the seconds following the gunshots, which instantly heightened the sense of threat to approaching police officers responding to the chaotic scene.” Body camera and other available video was turned over to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department as part of the investigation, and the evidence is now with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

“We extend sympathy to the family of Emantic J. Bradford of Hueytown, who was shot and killed during Hoover Police efforts to secure the scene in the seconds following the original altercation and shooting. The loss of human life is a tragedy under any circumstances,” the statement continued.

Members of Bradford’s family spoke at a news conference Sunday, accompanied by their attorney, Ben Crump.

Crump says several witnesses have come forward since the shooting to say the police officer who killed Bradford didn’t give any verbal commands to Bradford before shooting him in the face.

Officials also say the shooter could still be at large.

Crump says police offered Bradford no medical assistance after the shooting. Family members were tearful at the news conference at Birmingham’s Kelly Ingram Park. Several clutched photos of Bradford. At one point, Bradford’s grandmother Althea Pipkin collapsed and was escorted away as she sobbed over her grandson’s killing.

Crump and the family say it’s just another instance of a black man dying at the hands of police. Crump has represented other black men who were killed by police or others, including Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown.

The officer who shot Bradford has since been placed on administrative leave. His name has not been released.

Neither the State Bureau of Investigations, which is handling the investigation, nor Hoover police officials have responded to requests for further comment.

Crump says the family’s communication with the police department has been minimal. He says as of Sunday, the family still had not been contacted by Hoover police about Bradford’s death. Instead, he says the Bradford family found out about his death through social media.

On Saturday, protesters walked through the mall chanting “Say his name — EJ” and carrying signs that read “Justice for E.J.” and “Hoover PD Lied.”

E.J. Bradford Sr., who is a retired Birmingham jail employee, says he considers others in the law enforcement community as family. But he is angered by Hoover’s quick conclusion to label his son the killer. Bradford Sr. says he called Hoover police at 12:30 a.m. Friday but was told they would call him back. He says they did not call him before they gave a media briefing and that he has yet to receive a call.

“My son is gone. I can’t get him back. ... You vilified my son,” Bradford Sr. said Sunday.

Family of Emantic “EJ” Bradford Jr speaks out, calling for justice in their son’s death at the Galleria with Civil Rights attory Ben Crump. will never be the same again. Other family members joined Pipkins at the news conference. One of them was Clemon Brown, who is Bradford’s younger brother. Brown says he blames the media for going with early police accounts.

“EJ was not that kind of guy at all,” Brown says. “He was very respectful to his mother [and] his father.”

The family says Bradford had been taking care of his father, who has cancer. Crump says the family is unsure as

to whether it can have an open casket funeral because the police officer shot Bradford in the face. Law enforcement has not yet released any details about the fatal shooting.

Crump says in the meantime, they are going to explore every possible legal avenue available on the state and federal level.

Student Academy Program Dr. Wanda Brown, Inglewood City Treasurer The 14th City Treasurer Student Academy Program ended November 15, 2018. 26 students enrolled in the program. It is a four week program where students meet with City Treasurer Dr. Wanda Brown for two and a half hours. The focus of the program is to acquaint the interns with the day to day operations of Municipal government, how their local elected officials represent their community and how the office of the City Treasurer functions.

Important financial concepts were also taught such as, the Rule of 72, bond concepts, compound interest, to give them a basic understanding of how money works. A full hot lunch was provided at beginning of program.

Students visited the Council Chamber where they were given the opportunity to play the roles of mayor, council members, city treasurer, city clerk, city attorney, and city manager. Mayor Butts invited the student interns to the executive conference room to give them a presentation about changes in their city and the history of how it has come to be what it is today. Councilman Alex Padilla, who represents district 2, also provided kids with details of what his duties consist of and he provided lunch for the interns for one of the four sessions. City Manager Artie Fields, City Clerk Yvonne Horton, and Councilman Eloy Morales provided lunch for the students.

Tours of Finance Department, 911 Dispatch, and the Police Department were provided. During the Police Department tour students were given a K-9 demonstration as well as a tour through the jail.

Students were given a take-home examination to see how much of the information taught they were able to understand. A minimum score of 85% was required for passing. Most of the scores were in the 90% percentile and 3 students scored 100%! 26 plaques were presented at the plaque awards ceremony.

Galbraith Elected President of US Tennis Association WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) – Patrick Galbraith is the new board chairman and president of the U.S. Tennis Association.

The USTA announced the election of Galbraith on Tuesday. He succeeds Katrina Adams, who served an unprecedented two consecutive terms.

Adams was the first African-American and first former professional tennis player to serve as USTA president. Adams will serve the next two years as immediate past president.

Galbraith has been on the board in various capacities for 12 years. He begins his two-year term Jan. 1.

Grand Jury Weighs Dallas Officer Shooting of Her Black Neighbor DALLAS (AP) – A grand jury is hearing evidence in the case of a former Dallas police officer who fatally shot her unarmed black neighbor in his own apartment after she said she mistook it for hers.

Daryl Washington, an attorney for the family of the slain man, said the grand jury began hearing the case Monday. Amber Guyger was arrested on a manslaughter charge after the Sept. 6 shooting of Botham Jean, a 26-year-old native of St. Lucia.

Guyger, who is white, was later fired from the Dallas Police Department .

The grand jury will hear evidence and decide whether to indict Guyger. It could also decide on a more serious charge.

Jean’s family has filed a lawsuit against Guyger and the city of Dallas in the shooting.

Michelle Obama Speaks to Women

BOSTON (AP) – Former First Lady Michelle Obama is visiting Boston as she promotes her new book.

WBZ-AM reports Obama dropped in Saturday at the Boys and Girls Club in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood.

She spoke with young women who are a part of Black Girls Rock, a women’s empowerment and mentorship organization founded by former model Beverly Bond.

The radio station says Obama shared advice for college students and spoke about race, politics and other issues.

Obama is speaking about her autobiography, “Becoming,” Saturday night at TD Garden, the downtown arena home to the NBA’s Boston Celtics and the NHL’s Boston Bruins.

Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) to create a three-year, multi-media public awareness campaign focusing on the unique opportunities and challenges of The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA, which reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary School Act (ESEA) and replaced No Child Left Behind, received bipartisan support and was signed into law by President Barack Obama on December 10, 2015. The regulations are administered by the U.S. Department of Education and went into effect on January 30, 2017.

Under ESSA, states across the country adhere to more flexible federal regulations that provide for improved elementary and secondary education in the nation’s public schools. The law also ensures that every child, regardless of race, income, background or zip code has the opportunity to obtain a high-quality education.

By raising awareness of ESSA policies, the NNPA, which is a national trade association of approximately 211 Black and women-owned U.S. media companies with a weekly print and digital readership of over 20.1 million Black Americans, seeks to empower parents to advocate for instructional strategies that are in the best interest of their students and communities. In addition, this is a tremendous opportunity to increase support around academic issues that will make a difference in closing the achievement gap and ultimately the wealth gap.

Dr. Elizabeth V. Primas, who serves as the program manager for the NNPA ESSA Public Awareness Campaign and is a life-long educator, was on hand to welcome attendees and talk about ESSA being a tool to help increase the effectiveness of public education in every state, including Texas. Lynette Monroe, who is the program assistant for the NNPA ESSA Public Awareness Campaign, served as the event moderator.

The panelists were asked questions regarding several topics, including how the Texas Education Agency funding structure promotes or inhibits equitable school funding, their views on standardized testing overall and specifically African American student performance, effective ways to communicate and foster engagement with African American family members, how to increase community engagement, and things the Texas Education Agency or other entities can do to better prioritize the needs of students who receive special education services.

“You must get engaged in your child’s education to ensure they don’t become a statistic,” said parent and community activist Monica Riley.

Monica was one of the five panelists, along with her daughter Chirelle Riley, who participated in this powerful panel discussion, which also included Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board President Rhonda Skillern-Jones, educator Larry McKinzie, and Texas Southern University (TSU) student and Forward Times intern Treyvon Waddy.

Monica, who is the mother of seven girls and a product of the public school system, talked about the passion she developed about education, particularly after having to make tough choices about her children’s educational future. After sending her children to public school, private school and even choosing to home-school them, Monica became an educational advocate in order to tackle the issues she saw that were not being addressed by the school administrators tasked with addressing those issues.

Chirelle, who is an 18-year-old sophomore at Houston Community College, spoke about her educational experience from a millenials perspective and emphasized the need for school leaders to ensure students are being taught information that can benefit them beyond simply taking a test.

Skillern-Jones spoke about her own experiences dealing with the educational choices for her kids, which is what drove her to run for public office and become a school board trustee and seek to bring about change from within.

Skillern-Jones stated that the elected decision makers at the state level have made things difficult for school districts to solve many of the problems African American children face. She remained optimistic, however, that community engagement could change the current state of the educational system in Texas.

“I think that teachers should contact parents in some way on a consistent basis, not just to say your child is doing this well or this what your child did in class that day, because that’s not personal enough,” said Waddy, who

McKinzie, who is a 24-year-educator, parent of two public school students and a community activist, states that parents must talk to all elected officials and administrators and be an activist for their children. He believes that the charter schools, which are only located in Black and

Brown communities, take away the necessary resources from the public schools in those same communities which disparately impacts those schools.

This regional town hall meeting was a follow-up to the National Town Hall which took place on June 26th at the Gethsemane Community Fellowship Church in Norfolk, VA, which was a part of the NNPA’s Annual Conference.

This regional town hall meeting was one of several that are taking place across the country, with the focus being on encouraging parents to get involved and stay engaged in their child’s education.

HBCU-MD Inequality Case

Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia A coalition of HBCU students, alumni and others from Maryland are planning to pack the Fourth District Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia next month for oral arguments in a decades-old lawsuit over inequality in public higher education.

“We are reaching out and calling on at least 200 HBCU supporters to join us in Richmond on Dec. 11,” said HBCU Matters Chairman, Marvin “Doc” Cheatham.

The coalition has chartered buses to leave from each of the four HBCU campuses in Maryland on the morning of the arguments.

“The students are very actively advocating on behalf of all four of the HBCUs in Maryland. Morgan State has held two rallies thus far and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore had their Rally Saturday the 17th,” said Zattura Sims-El, one of many advocates for HBCUs in Maryland.

“Bowie and Coppin are currently planning rallies for each campus. The students from all four universities are communicating with each other for one purpose and that is the have Gov. Hogan withdraw the appeal, he and only he has the power and authority to do so,” Sims-El said.

A coalition of alumni from Maryland’s four HBCUs have been involved in a lawsuit since 2006 with the state.

Coalition members argue that Maryland has underfunded Morgan State University, Coppin State University, Bowie State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and allowed other state schools to duplicate their programs, placing pressure on enrollment.

Published reports suggest that over the years, the coalition has called for increased funding and merging the University of Baltimore with Morgan State, the state’s largest public historically black school, to achieve parity.

A year ago, a federal judge asked the state to remedy the lack of investment in Maryland’s HBCUs, ordering the state to establish a set of new, unique and high-demand programs at each historically black institution, the judge declared.

Despite that court order, settlement talks have stalled, and Maryland hasn’t accepted the court-ordered remedies for HBCUs. “While the Maryland HBCU case is still in mediation, due to the State’s refusal to accept the judge’s ruling, the Maryland HBCU Matters Coalition is hard at work,” Cheatham said.

In 2013, Judge Catherine Blake, U.S. District Court of Maryland, found the state in violation of 14th Amendment rights of its HBCU students and alumni.

Her ruling said Maryland continues to operate vestiges of a de jure system of segregation, specifically by continuing a longstanding practice of duplicating academic programs offered at HBCU’s, rather than investing in making the HBCU programs attractive to a diverse range of students.

By June 2017, after initial failed mediation between HBCU advocates and the state of Maryland, Blake ordered parties back into court.

In November of 2017, Blake reportedly issued an order providing for an administrator known as a special master to coordinate a comprehensive plan ensuring Maryland’s HBCU’s would be home to high quality academic programs.

“The Plan should propose a set of new unique and/or high demand programs at each HBI, taking into account each HBI’s areas of strength, physical building capacity and the programmatic niches suggested by the plaintiff’s experts,” Blake wrote in the November 2017 ruling.

According to The Afro, which has covered the story more extensively than any other media outlet, in December 2017, state Attorney General Brian Frosh gave notice that the state would appeal Blake’s ruling.

Frosh, who in prior years urged a mediated resolution

to the long-standing HBCU lawsuit, attempted to explain why he’s now extending the legal battle.

“It’s my job to defend the state when it gets sued,” Frosh told HBCU protestors who rallied outside his office in the months following the State’s appeal.

In January, Gov. Larry Hogan, further complicated the State’s message toward HBCU’s by writing to Del. Cheryl Glenn, former chair of the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus (LBC), offering a $100 million-dollar settlement offer, according to The Afro.

While the LBC supports HBCU advocates, the Caucus is not an official party to the lawsuit.

Hogan’s $100 million proposal would be split between Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, The Afro reported.

His settlement offer stipulates a 10-year allocation period and relieves the State of responsibility for court costs. Each institution would receive approximately 2.5 million per school, per year.

However, the estimated cost of the Coalition’s Plan to remedy the imbalance in quality academic programming offered at HBCU’s is in the $1-2 billion range.

Hogan’s offer also falls short of the $500 million settlement between the State of Mississippi and plaintiffs representing Mississippi’s three public HBCU’s almost 20 years ago, back in 2001, ending higher education desegregation litigation dating back to the 1970’s in that state.

“The decision by Frosh to appeal the decision from Federal District Court Judge Blake has elevated this issue to the US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit,” said Maryland advocate Brandon F. Cooper.

“If that Appeals Court also upholds the District Court decision, Frosh could decide to appeal again and then it lands in the U.S Supreme Court. Any decision from the U.S Supreme Court would impact every HBCU, not just those in Maryland,” said Cooper, a member of the Maryland Republican Party Executive Committee.

Cooper said the matter counts as a bipartisan issue and he brought the HBCU attorneys in to testify before the Republican Caucus in the Maryland legislature.

“HBCUs have long enjoyed bipartisan support in states, Congress and the White House,” Cooper said.

“However, President Donald Trump has sent mix signals on his continuance of the historically bipartisan support of HBCUs,” he said.

One HBCU alumni said he knows well what a battle between a historically black institution and the state looks like.

In an email, Matthews “Billy” Wright recalled a 50 year-old incident at Coppin State.

“As a [Student Government Association] officer in 1968 we, as student representatives, organized and executed a successful four-week boycott of the campus at Coppin State College and moved the student body to an off-campus site to complete the school year,” Wright said.

The Black Girls Vote Ball celebrates the accomplishments of black women in politics and activism who are making a difference not only in their community but around the world, according to a news release.

The Rising Star Award is bestowed upon a person for their clear demonstration and dedication to changing the world we live in for the better.

Black Girls Vote, Inc. was launched on what would have been Shirley Chisolm’s 91st birthday, November 30, 2015 in Baltimore.

Through nontraditional engagement efforts that focus on meeting people where they are, Black Girls Vote has registered more than 16,000 voters.

Black Girls Vote (BGV) is also supporting the next generation of leaders and engaged voters through their

High School and Collegiate Ambassador Program where BGV Ambassadors activate their student body while bringing BGV’s mission, vision and values on their campus, the organization said in the news release.

This midterm election cycle, under the leadership of Loftin, the NAACP Youth and College Division completed a highly successful Vote 2018 campaign in just a few short weeks, Black Girls Vote officials said.

They were able to mobilize 5,800 students, recruit and maintain 2,607 new activists, host 232 “vote specific” events, organize at 174 schools across this nation and engage 33 of the 50 states, proving that young people are rising to the occasion and answering the call.

“I dedicate this award to everyone 35 and under who constantly prove this country wrong. I dedicate this award to those who can’t vote. I dedicate this award to every black woman who says I told you so;” Loftin said as she accepted the award.

“Every year we have an opportunity to not only change government to not only advance legislation but to redefine democracy. I know we’re winning because it’s getting harder, but I am encouraged and inspired, and I’m committed to our communities,” she said.

Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia WASHINGTON – The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies has released six detailed reports on the troubling lack of racial diversity among the 167 top staff in the Washington, D.C. offices of six congressional delegations – Delaware, Maryland, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.

Of the 12 U.S. Senators in the six states, none had an African American top staffer despite representing significant Black populations.

In fact, the reports note that the only top staffer of color for any of the senators was a Latino top staffer for Mississippi GOP Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.

The lack of diversity in Tennessee was even more glaring with none of the 28 top staffers working for the U.S. House and U.S. Senate Members being people of color despite people of color making up 25 percent of the state’s population, The Joint Center noted in a news release.

“These numbers are alarming but there is no better time than right now to change the trajectory of diversity among top staff and mid-level staff,” said Spencer Overton, President of the Joint Center.

“In the coming months, hundreds of new staffers will be hired by new Members, new Chairs of U.S. House committees and other Members,” Overton said.

“The 116th Congress will be the most diverse in the nation’s history and it’s imperative that the diversity among senior and mid-level staff reflect the diversity of America,” said Don Bell, the director of the Black Talent Initiative at the Joint Center.

“Any individual seeking to hold a leadership position in the 116th Congress must be committed to taking immediate and decisive action that ensures that Congress is truly representative of the people it serves,” Bell said.

Other key statistics from the reports include: • In Tennessee, Representative Steve Cohen (TN-9) has no top staff of color but represents a district that is 75.7 percent people of color and, in 2016, African Americans accounted for 82 percent of Democratic turnout in his district.

• Across the country, only five other Members of Congress who lack top staff of color represent districts with higher numbers of residents of color.

• Just over 28 percent of the Tennessee delegation’s top staffers are women.

• In Pennsylvania, less than 10 percent of the top staffers are people of color even though 23 percent of the state’s population are people of color.

• Of the 18 elected Members of the Pennsylvania delegation, just three have at least one top staffer of color.

• In Maryland, people of color make up almost half of the state’s population but less than 25 percent of the top staff of House and Senate members.

• African Americans accounted for 47 percent of the Democratic Party’s voters in Maryland in 2016, but they account for less than 15 percent of the top staffers who work for the Democratic Members of the Maryland delegation.

• None the nine top staffers who work for Senator Ben Cardin, Senator Chris Van Hollen, or House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer are people of color.

• In Mississippi, only 18.7 percent of top staff are people of color despite making up 42.5 percent of the state’s population.

• While African Americans make up over 37 percent of Mississippi’s population, none of six top staffers and only 11 percent of the mid-level staffers who work for the U.S. Senators from Mississippi are Black.

• African Americans accounted for 13 percent of the Republican Party’s voters in Mississippi in 2016 but accounted for none of the 14 top staffers who work for Republican Members of the state’s congressional delegation.

• 57.4 percent of African Americans in Mississippi live in a district represented by a U.S. House Member and two U.S. Senators without any Black top staffers.

• In Delaware, people of color account for over a third of Delaware’s population (36.4 percent), but just 20 percent of the top staffers.

• African Americans accounted for a third of the Democratic Party’s voters in Delaware in 2016, but they account for none of the seven top staffers and only three of the 40 midlevel staffers who work for Delaware’s two Democratic U.S. Senators—Tom Carper and Chris Coons.

• In Virginia, less than 15 percent of the top staffers are people of color even though 36.7 percent of the state’s population are people of color.

• Of the 13 elected Members of the Virginia delegation, just four have at least one top staffer of color.

• African Americans accounted for 37 percent of the Democratic Party’s voters in Virginia in 2016, but they accounted for none of the top staff of Virginia’s two Democratic U.S. Senators, 13 percent of Senator Warner’s mid-level staffers, and none of Senator Kaine’s mid-level staffers.

The reports examined the racial diversity of staff directors of full committees as well as personal office chiefs of staff, legislative directors, and communications directors.

“These numbers are alarming but there is no better time than right now to change the trajectory of diversity among top staff and mid-level staff,” said Spencer Overton, President of the Joint Center.

White Nationalist Argument will be Self-Defense?

By DENISE LAVOIE Associated Press CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – An Ohio man charged with killing a woman during a white nationalist rally in Virginia plans to argue that he believed he was acting in self-defense when he drove his car into a crowd of counter protesters.

A lawyer for James Alex Fields Jr. offered a glimpse of the defense strategy as jury selection began Monday in Charlottesville, fifteen months after this quiet Virginia city became a flash point for race relations in the U.S. The “Unite the Right” rally on Aug. 12, 2017 rally drew hundreds of white nationalists to Charlottesville, where officials planned to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Hundreds more showed up to protest against the white nationalists.

The two sides began brawling before the rally got underway, throwing punches, setting off smoke bombs and unleashing chemical sprays. Later, 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed when a car authorities say was driven by Fields plowed into a crowd of counterprotesters.

Afterward, President Donald Trump enflamed racial tensions when he said “both sides” were to blame, a comment some saw as a refusal to condemn racism.

Fields' attorney John Hill told a group of prospective

jurors Monday the jury will hear evidence that Fields “thought he was acting in self-defense.”

Hill asked if any of the prospective jurors believe using violence in self-defense is never appropriate.

Nearly all of the 68 prospective jurors in the first group to be questioned said they had read or heard about the case.

About 20 people said they had formed an opinion in the case. When asked if their opinion was so strong they could not put it aside and decide the case based only on the evidence, no hands were raised.

Fields was photographed hours before the attack with a shield bearing the emblem of Vanguard America, one of the hate groups that participated in the rally, although the group denied any association with him.

Pretrial hearings have offered few insights into Fields or his motivation. A Charlottesville police detective testified that as he was being detained after the car crash, Fields said he was sorry and sobbed when he was told a woman had been killed. Fields later told a judge he is being treated for bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression and ADHD. Star Peterson, whose right leg was virtually crushed by the car, has had five surgeries and still uses a wheelchair and cane. She sat quietly in the court room Monday watching the proceedings.

Mahershala Ali, Viggo Mortensen in 'Green Book'

By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer NEW YORK (AP) – The National Board of Review has named the feel-good road-trip drama “Green Book” the best film of the year, and its star, Viggo Mortensen, best actor.

The awards announced Thursday gave “Green Book” a much-needed jolt. The film was declared an Oscar favorite after taking the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it has struggled to latch on at the box office.

“A Star Is Born” also took several top awards, including best director for Bradley Cooper, best actress for Lady Gaga and best supporting actor for Sam Elliott.

Barry Jenkins' James Baldwin adaptation “If Beale Street Could Talk” took prizes for Jenkins' screenplay and for Regina King's supporting performance.

The awards will be handed out in a gala in New York on Jan. 8.

Bruins Fall After High Hopes

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer UCLA came within a few minutes of staging one of the best come-backs in school history. Thanks to a ‘never say die’ effort the Bruins rallied to fall short to Stanford 4942 in front of 38,391 at the Rose Bowl.

Senior QB Wilton Speight completed 29 of 47 passes for a career high 466 yards.

Trailing 41-27 the bruins reeled off 15 straight points after a safety by Martin Andrus Jr. Darnay Holmes

returned the kick-off 93 yards to bring the Bruins to within five 41-36.

“We had our opportunities today,“ said Bruin head coach Chip Kelly. ” We just didn’t capitalize on them.”

Speight then led them on a 13 play 90 yard drive taking it in the end zone himself on a one yard run.

Just over a minute left Osirs St. Brown caught his only pass of the day, a 52 yard TD from K.J.Costello and that

put the Cardinal 7-4,(5-3 PAC-12) ahead for good.

Costello finished the Day completing 23 of 37 for 344 yards and a career high five touchdowns. The win was the 11th in a row over UCLA. Running back Joshua Kelley was held to 55 yards on the ground after having seven straight 100 yard games.

Kelley finishes the season with 1,243 yards number 8 in the PAC-12.

Lakers Beat the Jazz on Black Friday

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com On Black Friday while some those Los Angeles Lakers fans doing their early Christmas shopping, the Lakers welcomed the Utah Jazz into the Staples Center. The Lakers were coming off the road trip that had them playing both teams in Florida and the Cavaliers on the way home.

Though they dropped their first game of the road trip the Orlando Magic, LeBron put up 32 points on the Cleveland Cavaliers and followed that game up with 51 points against the Miami Heat, ending the road trip with two consecutive wins.

The underachieving Utah Jazz came into this game under .500 and having lost 2 of their 3 games. Rudy Gubert may have summed things up best for the Jazz by stating that, “they may have forgotten what got them there.” “When they play with a chip on their shoulder, we are at our best.” So far this season we haven’t seen the best out of the Jazz.

The Jazz was able to hold the Lakers to the worst assist game yet the season, as the total 10 assists for the game. “Some it was, Utah is a very good defensive team

and some of us playing somewhat selfish basketball,” Luke emphatically states in his postgame press conference.

The Lakers out rebounded the Jazz 47 to 41 in this game, while holding the Jazz to below 39% percent shooting in this post-Thanksgiving Day matchup. When asked which numbers he was most impressed with Luke stated, “They’re both impressive; those are two of the main things we’ve been talking about all season.”

Though the Laker gave the following game away to the visiting Orlando Magic, most Lakers fans have to be pleased with the team’s progression to this point in the season. We all have heard the Lakers brass preach patience, including LeBron, however the addition of Tyson Chandler coupled the competitive spirit of Magic and Lebron… doesn’t exude patience. These guys know, you’ve got to be in to win it; and these Lakers are positioning themselves for playoff basketball. USC Beats CSU Bakersfield

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com In his eighth season as head coach, Rod Barnes lead the Cal State University Bakersfield Roadrunners into the Galen Center to compete against the University of Southern California Trojans. Both these Basketball programs came into the game with 3-2 records in this early season matchup. Surprisingly there is very little history between the two programs, as this will be only the second time these teams have played again each other.

This was a competitive game throughout the first half.

Coach Barnes clearly recruited some tough-minded kids to play in his program. Additionally, Coach Barnes and staff have scoured to the country to put this team together. As 6 states are represented on the CSU Bakersfield hoop team, compared to 5 states being for the Trojans The halftime score was indicative of the competitiveness displayed by each team, as CSU Bakersfield held a 46-44 at halftime lead. The Trojans broke the game open with a 22-6 run late in the 2nd half of the game. Guards Elijah Weaver,

Jordan Usher, and Bennie Boatwright sparked the run with a 14-0 run by the Trojans Guards as they took control of this game. Coach Enfield modestly mentioned in his postgame press conference “We got some key stops, in the last eight minutes to really turn the game.”

“They made some tough threes, but we also gave them some semi-contested threes in the first half.” Explained USC Head Coach Andy Enfield when discussing the run they went on in the second half, “In the last 6-7 minutes, we did a great job of making them uncomfortable while they were shooting.”

The Trojans defended their home court as they did when these two teams last played against each other in December of 2013. This young Trojan is versatile and athletic even without their star recruit Kevin Porter Jr., who was out with a calf injury. It will be interesting to see how this young team look with the full complement of players.
