LOS ANGELES, January 19, 2019— The partnership of Best Start Watts/Willowbrook recently came together to host a Community Pride and Beautification Day in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event gave residents of the Watts and Willowbrook communities an opportunity to come together to create a cleaner and safer environment for their families to enjoy.

Volunteers, families, and residents all convened at George Washington Carver Park in Willowbrook. Rakes, shovels, anti-dust masks, and reflective safety vests were distributed to ensure safety.

“It was a great day of showing that we care about our communities of Watts and Willowbrook and passion for community service in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr,” said Ken Carson, Best Start Watts/Willowbrook leadership member and chairman of the Community Pride and Beautification Day planning committee.

More than fifty families, friends, and partners contributed their time including Sen. Maxine Waters and U.S Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán. Sen. Waters shared some empowering words during the lunch program recognizing the commitment it takes to take pride in the community.

“There is nothing more demonstrative or relative to what you care about in your community than cleaning it up and that is what you are doing today,” said Sen. Maxine Waters. “If you love your community and you care about it, not only would you clean it up, you would stop your community from dirtying it up. When we are empowered to do that little kids learn and stay with it.”

The event kicked-off at 8:00 AM, volunteers received a safety training before making their way to clean up locations near the park, including the underpass of the 105 freeway. Volunteers collected numerous bags containing cigarette butts, plastic bottles, clothes, and other debris.

The Community Pride and Beautification Day event provided community members with an opportunity to network and foster relationships with one another and encouraged them to work towards a more sustainable community.

Tax Cuts for Sluggish Pot Industry

By PAUL ELIAS Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ A group of Democratic state lawmakers and one Republican colleague on Monday proposed slashing taxes to jump-start California's sluggish legal marijuana marketplace.

Democratic Assemblyman Rob Bonta of Oakland, Democratic state Treasurer Fiona Ma and three other Assembly members said at a news conference that the state's year-old legal marijuana marketplace is struggling to keep up with California's entrenched black market not encumbered by state and local taxes and time-consuming and costly regulations.

Bonta said the state's legal marijuana industry is “not occurring as we hoped, expected and wanted.”

The proposed bill would for the next three years eliminate the state's $148 per pound cultivation tax on farmers and reduce the state's 15 percent excise tax on retail sales to 11 percent. A similar bill failed to clear the Democratic-controlled Assembly last year.

On Jan. 1, 2018, California broadly legalized marijuana use for adults after overwhelming support for Proposition 64, which promised to fill state and local coffers while helping to eliminate the state's illegal operators. But far fewer licenses and tax revenues have been collected than expected and legal businesses point to the state and local taxes and red tape as the reasons.

California officials said the state collected $234 million in taxes between January and October last year, the latest figures California Department of Tax and Fee Administration has available. Gov. Gavin Newsom's proposed budget for the fiscal year that ends June 30 estimates $355 million in annual tax revenues, a $275 million reduction from previous estimates.

Legal marijuana businesses also pay local taxes not affected by the bill.

Palmdale Republican Assemblyman Tom Lackey, who signed on to the current bill, sponsored a similar measure last year that failed to pass out of the Assembly's appropriations committee last year. Democratic Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher of San Diego, the chair of the committee, said at the time she and other opponents pointed to a Legislative Analyst's Office estimated last year the cuts would reduce annual funds to the state by up to $297 million for voting no.

Lackey and the other lawmakers supporting the current measure said they hoped a tax cut would increase legal sales and help legitimate operators compete with the black market. Some businesses pay as much as 40 percent in combined state and local taxes, Lackey said.

“Lowering state excise taxes will help the legal marijuana industry gain a better foothold over the black market in California,” said Ellen Komp of the promarijuana group California NORML. Komp also called on lawmaker to simplify the regulatory process.

Kim Porter Died from Pneumonia

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Coroner office officials say former model and actress Kim Porter died last year from pneumonia. The Los Angeles coroner’s office on Friday released the results of its investigation into Porter’s Nov. 15 death. Investigators determined after an autopsy that her death was from natural causes.

The 47-year-old was also a former girlfriend of Sean “Diddy” Combs and the pair had three children together.

Combs eulogized Porter at her funeral in her hometown of Columbus, Georgia. Numerous celebrities, including Usher, Mary J. Blige, Lil’ Kim and producer Russell Simmons attended the ceremony, which ended with fireworks.

Porter also has a son, actor-singer Quincy Brown, from a previous relationship with R&B singer Al B. Sure! Combs called Porter “more than a soul” mate in a tweet after her death.

Mom Mistakenly Donated CashMug

CONYERS, Ga. (AP) – A Georgia woman gave away much more than intended when she donated a souvenir mug to charity. Lindsay Preiss told WSB-TV that when she donated the yellow travel mug with a Mickey Mouse sticker on it to a Goodwill store in Conyers, she didn’t realize it had $6,500 inside. Now she’s hoping whoever scooped up the unexpected treasure will return it.

Preiss’ 27-year-old son, Devon Silvey, recently sold his car for cash on a Sunday, when banks were closed. He was in the process of moving and stopped by his parents’ house for boxes. He said he didn’t want to leave the cash in his car so he stashed it in the mug in a cabinet. The family is offering a reward for the return of the mug of money.

Funeral Fight Ends in Deadly Shooting

COMPTON, Calif. (AP) – A fight at a Compton funeral has ended with a deadly shooting. Authorities say one man was killed and two other people hurt Friday afternoon outside New Holy Trinity Baptist Church.

Witnesses tell KABC-TV that an argument erupted between family members attending services for a relative who was brought there after dying in Louisiana.

Witnesses say the dispute spilled out into the back parking lot, where fists were thrown and then someone pulled a gun and began firing. Two people were shot and third was hurt in a crash. There’s no immediate word on whether an arrest was made.

Hot Dog Stand Attacker Sought

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Los Angeles police say they’re looking for a man who punched two women in a clash at a hot dog stand.

In a video the Los Angeles Police Department posted Tuesday on Twitter, the man is shown throwing one of the women to the ground in downtown on Saturday, then punching the second as she approaches.

He punches the first woman as she stands and hits the second again as she appears to be standing still, knocking her down. He punches the first woman once again as she winds up to hit him, also knocking her to down.

Multiple bystanders remain passive but one shouts “Get him!” as the man jogs away.

LAPD says “someone knows him, and we would like to be one of those people.”

Pool Discrimination Lawsuit Settled

Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent The national civil rights organization, Muslim Advocates, and its co-counsel announced a settlement of a lawsuit against the city of Wilmington, Delaware. The lawsuit alleged that Muslim children were repeatedly harassed at city pools last year because of clothing worn for religious reasons.

According to court documents, the city will revise its dress code policies for city-operated aquatic facilities to ensure access for all. The new policy will expressly state that the dress code accommodates clothing worn for religious reasons or financial hardship.

The settlement comes following a lawsuit brought by Wilmington-based Muslim Youth Center, Darul Amaanah Academy, and certain families associated with the center.

Some of the children attending Darul Amaanah’s summer camp, consistent with their religious beliefs, wear headscarves, t-shirts or leggings while in public.

Despite wearing such clothing at city pools for years without incident, pool staff harassed the children this past summer and repeatedly denied them access to the pool simply because of their religious beliefs, according to Darul Amaanah.

Despite numerous complaints, including a cease and desist letter from Muslim Advocates and an acknowledgement from the mayor’s office that the city used “poor judgment” and “should be held accountable,” the city failed to take meaningful action, forcing the plaintiffs to file this lawsuit in August 2018, according to attorneys for the center.

“I was born and raised in Wilmington, which is why it broke my heart to see our children face this kind

of discrimination and humiliation from the city,” said Tahsiyn Ismaa’eel, founding director of the Darul Amaanah Academy summer youth camp.

“Every child should be able to have fun in a public pool without having to worry about facing prejudice.”

As part of the settlement, the city will provide additional training to employees of city-operated aquatic facilities and prominently display the new dress code policy at all city pools.

The city will also extend the length of the 2019 pool season through Labor Day and provide $50,000 in compensation to the plaintiffs, according to the settlement.

While the city didn’t admit any wrongdoing, Mayor Mike Purzycki and City Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Kelley both said Wilmington is committed to “ensuring the fair and equal treatment of all residents.”

“Both parties agreed that today’s announced settlement helps to ensure that all residents of Wilmington are able to enjoy Wilmington’s aquatic facilities,” the mayor and parks director said in a joint statement.

Muslim Advocates attorneys said they were pleased with the outcome.

“Darul Amaanah Academy’s staff and families showed remarkable courage by publicly standing up for themselves and for the broader Wilmington community,” said Juvaria Khan, the senior staff attorney at Muslim Advocates.

“Everybody — especially young children — should be allowed to use the pool without fearing that they will be discriminated against because of what they believe or the way they look. This situation should have never happened, and this settlement agreement helps ensure that it will never happen again.”

By DON THOMPSON Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Tens of thousands of parolees would be allowed to vote under a state constitutional amendment proposed Monday by California's secretary of state and Democratic lawmakers who called it the next civil rights issue.

The proposal intended for the 2020 ballot would help nearly 50,000 felons who have served their time adjust to being back in the community, said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and other advocates. Parolees currently are prohibited from registering to vote in local, state or federal elections. California is one of several states that have or are considering expanding voting rights for felons.

The proposal would include murderers, rapists and others convicted of violent crimes. It would not affect criminals until they are released from custody, unlike in some other states.

The proposal continues California's pattern in recent years of reducing sentences and increasing earlier releases from prison, said Christine Ward, executive director of the Crime Victims Action Alliance. ``Why should the individuals who committed these horrible crimes be given the same rights as the rest of us who are following the rules?'' Ward said.

Democrats control the two-thirds legislative majorities needed to put the measure on the ballot, but the amendment's author, Assemblyman Kevin McCarty of Sacramento, predicted it will not be an easy vote. Thurman vs Lopez Fight Card Recap PBC on FOX

Their calendar of boxing match ups has boxing fans looking forward to their lineup each weekend. This past weekend’s lineup headlined by Keith Thurman vs Josesito Lopez was hosted by the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and aired of Fox Sports. This article will share some of the pre and post-fight quotes from a few of the fighters which competed in this past weekend’s fight card.

Thurman was intent on returning to the ring and making and stellar defense of his title. By going the distance, this fight would give him a chance to go show off his skills.

NBA Legend Brings Levity to Grizzlies MLK Symposium

By Lee Eric Smith The New Tri-State Defender At this point, I’ve lost count of how many MLK Day Grizzlies games I’ve covered. Same for the extracurricular activities surrounding the game — the panels, the service projects and, of course, the Earl Lloyd Sports Legacy Symposium, which immediately precedes the game.

The symposium provides the honorees the chance to make compelling, thoughtful and mostly safe remarks about Dr. King. This year, those honorees were recent NBA champion Chris Bosh; WNBA champion and University of Tennessee alumnae Candace Parker; Wayne Embry, who became the NBA’s first African-American general manager in 1972; and NBA legend and hoops commentator Bill Walton.

As Grizzlies’ TV announcer Pete Pranica made his opening remarks, I was settling in for a healthy – but safe – conversation about Dr. King.

Why do I keep bringing up the word “safe?”

Because while Dr. King absolutely is worthy to be recognized as the great human being and American citizen he was, events like these double as public relations opportunities – meaning, they must pay respect to Dr. King while at the same time not ruffling any feathers or making anyone uncomfortable. By contrast, Dr. King died ruffling feathers and making people uncomfortable.

By and large, the MLK symposia have been . . . blah.

I mean, I’m glad the team does them, don’t get me wrong.

But I’ve already heard (insert 60s era athlete here) talk about segregation countless times. I’ve listened to (insert recent NBA star here) talk about the stories they learned about King from their parents. I mean no disrespect, but . . . yawn.

Which is why watching Bill Walton take over Monday’s 2019 symposium was so entertaining. Walton is a notorious talkaholic, and he was on a verbal bender Monday afternoon. He started even before he was introduced, joking that Pranica (a longtime friend) was his grandson.

“He was very well behaved as a boy,” Walton joked.

The crowd laughed, and not for the last time.

I must give a quick shout to this remark from Parker,

Walton also respectfully poked fun at Embry as the only person on the panel older than himself. He also shouted out his former teammate at Portland, former Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, who was in the audience.

And if you’re thinking, “Dang, Bill Walton was being downright disrespectful,” well, you’d be right – if it weren’t for three things: One, the old man has a way with words.

Two, he had the audience laughing half the time. And the other half of the time, Bill Walton was saying things that weren’t “safe” — and the crowd was saying “Amen.”

Pranica asked Parker what she thought the civil rights issues of today are. She said something thoughtful, but safe. Then Walton blurted out, “Voter suppression!”

At one point, the people in front of me murmured to each other: “He preaching, ain’t he?” The response: “Gon’ have to pass the plate in a minute . . .”

Of course, modern social issues like voter suppression, mass incarceration and police brutality are not “black” issues, even though they disproportionately affect African Americans. They are American issues, which is why it can be frustrating when it seems the only demographic speaking up about injustice are black folks.

That’s why it’s so refreshing when a white American takes a stand on those issues, the way Walton did at the MLK symposium. Not only does it signal that someone other than black folk are paying attention to these issues, it calls the rest of America to action. It’s not talked about much, but decades ago, many white people bled and died speaking out against racism and discrimination. In those days, it could get you killed, regardless of your skin color.

To take a stand took courage.

Arguably, it takes less courage these days. But it was still refreshing to hear Walton say what needs to be said. Even if he was a bit obnoxious about it to his fellow honorees.

Oil, Gas and Coal Industry List of Government Regulation Rollbacks

By MATTHEW BROWN Associated Press Under President Donald Trump, federal agencies have moved to roll back regulations for companies that extract, transport and burn oil, gas and coal. Government analyses show companies will save billions of dollars in compliance costs, but the trade-off often will be adverse impacts to public health and the environment.

The rule changes: FUEL TRAIN BRAKES: Citing high costs, Trump's administration rescinded a 2015 Department of Transportation rule requiring railroads to begin installing more advanced electronic brakes on trains hauling hazardous fuels.

Industry savings: $375 million-$554 million (20182037) Impact: Additional derailments of tank cars. AP found the government understated potential impacts by as much as $117 million.

Status: Final METHANE EMISSIONS: Administration wants

to eliminate 2016 Environmental Protection Agency rule requiring energy companies to reduce flaring of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Industry savings: $380 million-$484 million (2019-2025) Impacts: Emission increases of 380,000 tons of methane, 100,000 tons of volatile organic compounds, 3,800 tons of hazardous air pollutants; adverse health effects including premature deaths, heart attacks, and respiratory problems; potential reductions in visibility.

Status: Pending METHANE EMISSIONS: Administration largely eliminated Interior Department's 2016 “waste prevention rule” that required companies to reduce the flaring of methane on public and tribal lands.

Standing Ovation for Michael Jackson Accusers

By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer PARK CITY, Utah (AP) _ It’s not uncommon for audiences at the Sundance Film Festival to give standing ovations, but the ceremonial act took on a solemn air as two men who accuse Michael Jackson of molesting them as boys walked onstage following the festival's only screening of “Leaving Neverland,”a documentary about their stories.

Wade Robson, who says Jackson abused him from ages 7 to 14, and James Safechuck came forward as adults with their abuse allegations after Jackson's death in 2009.

The four-hour film, which will air in two parts on Britain's Channel 4 and HBO this spring, is a sprawling account of how their lives intersected with Jackson's at the height of his fame in the 80s and early 90s, and then later as adults when the trauma of what happened in their youth started to emerge in serious ways.

In addition to accounts from Robson and Safechuck themselves, the film also interviews family members including the boys' mothers, wives and Robson's brother and sister. Jackson's voice is heard in the film, through voicemails he left for Robson and an “interview” Safechuck did with Jackson aboard his private plane, and the film also shows some of the many faxes he sent to Robson.

“We can't change what happened to us. And we can't do anything about Michael,” Robson said in a Q&A with the audience. But he said he hopes it makes other survivors feel less isolated and raises awareness for anyone who is responsible for children.

Safechuck added that they weren't paid to participate in the documentary, nor did they expect to get anything from it.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they come forward publicly, which Robson and Safechuck have done in multiple ways.

“Leaving Neverland” has been denounced by Jackson's estate and fans since the project was announced earlier this month.

Jackson was acquitted of molestation charges in 2005 in a case involving another young man. Robson testified at that trial, saying he had slept in Jackson's room many times, but that Jackson had never molested him. Safechuck

made similar statements to investigators as a boy. Then in 2013 Robson filed a lawsuit that said stress and trauma had forced him to face the truth that he was sexually abused

by Jackson. Safechuck filed a similar lawsuit the following year. Both were dismissed for technical reasons and a judge did not evaluate the merits of the allegations “Leaving Neverland” director Dan Reed said he was entering new territory exploring an entertainment figure, instead of his usual subjects like terrorism and crime.

He told the men, who had talked to so many lawyers over the years, to just speak to him like he was an ordinary person on the street and not to worry about contradictions.

He interviewed Robson for three days and Safechuck for two days before deciding that he also wanted to speak to their mothers.

“I was just blown away,” Reed said. “I knew we had something really big.”

Safechuck and Robson say that being together through the process has been incredible.

“It's all we've wanted for the past six years to be able to talk, communicate,” Robson said. It's just been beautiful.”

Safechuck added: “It was a long time coming, just connecting to someone who has been through this. It's amazing.”

The film has stirred up controversy since it was announced just a few weeks ago. The Jackson estate condemned it for rehashing “discredited allegations.”

Before the screening, there were reports that there would be massive demonstrations outside and Park City deployed extra police outside the Egyptian Theater, which is in the middle of the festival's busiest street. But only a handful of people showed up Friday holding posters with the word “innocent” displayed over Jackson's mouth.

An audience member brought up the reality that there are many Jackson fans who don't believe them, and asked if they had a message for them.

“I don't feel like there's anything I need to say to them, except that I understand that it's really hard to believe,” Robson said. “Because in a way, not that long ago, I was in the same position they were. Even though it happened to me, I still couldn't believe. I still couldn't believe that what Michael did to me was a bad thing. We can only accept and understand something when we're ready.”

The Super Bowl is one of the world's biggest sporting events. But some are looking to boycott the big game after the halftime show has been the topic of a heated debate since Kaepernick, who has not been signed by an NFL team, said he would not stand for the national anthem in protest of racial discrimination against blacks in the United States.

Some, including Rihanna and Pink, have reportedly turned down offers to perform during this year's halftime.

Jay-Z alluded to his feelings in a recent song that he declined to perform at the Super Bowl, and Amy Schumer refused to appear in a TV ad during the game.

Cardi B said she won’t take the Super Bowl halftime stage until Kaepernick gets a job, but she will perform at a downtown concert next week.

Maroon 5 will be joined by Atlanta-based rapper Big Boi and Travis Scott during the halftime performance.

Gladys Knight will sing the national anthem.

Gerald Griggs, vice president of the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP, has said the NAACP asked performers who signed up to reconsider their participation. Through the petition, he wants acts like Maroon 5 to withdraw from the Super Bowl “until the league changes their policy and support players' constitutional right to protest.”

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, PJ Morton, Maroon 5's keyboardist, said he felt the heat of his band's decision to perform .

Scott has fallen under even more widespread scrutiny for his upcoming Super Bowl appearance. The rapper agreed to participate in the halftime show if the NFL made a joint donation to an organization fighting for social justice.

The NFL and Scott gave $500,000 to the Van Jones' Dream Corps, which works on criminal justice reform and expands opportunities for diversity in technology, environmental issues and education. But despite his

charitable efforts, Scott fell in the social media crosshairs with the Rev. Al Sharpton, and rappers Common and Meek Mill.

Dupri, though, called Scott's initiative with the NFL a “forward movement.”

“If he did something to bring attention to police brutality or injustice, I think that's a step forward in the fight that everybody seems to want to talk about,” he said.

Dupri said he's facing the same kind of criticism from skeptics calling him a “sellout” for putting on his Super Bowl Live event. He supports Kaepernick's efforts, but wants to provide a major platform for Atlanta music artists to perform in front of thousands.

“If we were to completely turn our head to what's happening Super Bowl weekend and have nothing to do with it, and stand with Kaepernick and completely boycott, what about our love and our craft that we care so much about?” Dupri said. “It's a rough situation, because you want to support both sides.”

Bernice King, the daughter of slain civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., declined an interview request but has spoken out on Twitter.

“Imagine (hash)TrayvonMartin having a chance to tell his side of the story,” she wrote this week. “Imagine media searching for a better view on (hash)MikeBrown's behalf.

Imagine the Peace Warrior Organization, a group of youth in (hash)Chicago working to stop violence, being invited to the White House this week.”

Atlanta's NAACP will give people a platform to speak, but separate from the NFL. Griggs said the organization, along with other civil rights groups, will hold a rally to address police brutality and racial disparity in the criminal justice system the day before the Super Bowl at Piedmont Park. He said the rally is focused on implementing safer methods for police to enforce the law.

Entertainers Address Social Injustice Issues at Super Bowl

By GEORGE HENRY and JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr. Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) – Some entertainers believe social injustice needs to be addressed during the Super Bowl and are ensuring the topic that ignited a political firestorm, engulfing the NFL, will be in the spotlight.

They passionately disagree on how. Some will perform in Super Bowl-related events while others will be noticeably absent.

Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick helped start a wave of protests by kneeling during the national anthem to raise awareness to police brutality, racial inequality and other social issues.

Jermaine Dupri said he was called a “sellout” for hosting a Super Bowl-related event during a meeting with people who had lost family members as result police brutality.

After the meeting, Dupri and the victims' family members came to a compromise. The music mogul plans to give mothers a platform to speak onstage during his Super Bowl Live event in Atlanta. He hopes to bridge the gap between speaking out against social injustice and accommodate the NFL during his five-night concert series starting Saturday.

Some of the families were looking to boycott the Super Bowl and initially Dupri's event in the city that many consider the birthplace of civil rights.

“I met with the families and parents who have been killed and murdered by police officers here,” the 46-yearold longtime Atlanta resident said. “I plan on having them come to my Super Bowl Live event and speak to the crowd and tell their story about police brutality in the city and let people understand that I'm supporting them as much as possible.”

Dupri was initially criticized after he partnered with the Super Bowl host committee to produce a series of free concerts at Centennial Olympic Park, located a couple of blocks from where the Super Bowl will be held at the

knows he can't please everyone. Even some of the family members of police brutality victims were hesitant to participate with him this week.

“I want to bring awareness to the situation, and let people to know that we're not out here partying and not caring about their situation,” Dupri said. “They told me that they didn't want to come to my show. They're pretty much boycotting the Super Bowl. We had a meeting and came to an understanding. I want them to have a platform to speak.”

By HOWARD FENDRICH AP News MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Naomi Osaka never made it past the fourth round at any of the first 10 Grand Slam tournaments of her career. Now, still just 21, she’s suddenly on the verge of a second consecutive major championship.

And the No. 1 ranking, too.

Osaka moved one victory away from adding the Australian Open trophy to the one she collected 4½ months ago at the U.S. Open, using her smooth power to produce 15 aces and groundstroke winners at will while beating Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the semifinals Thursday.

“I just told myself to regroup in the third set and just try as hard as I can,” said Osaka, who saved four break points in the last set and finished the match with an ace at 115 mph (185 kph).

“I was so scared serving second serves. I was like, ’Oh,

my God. Please!” Osaka said. “Somehow, I made it. I guess that’s experience.”

A day after erasing four match points and a 5-1 deficit in the third set to stun Serena Williams in the quarterfinals, Pliskova could not produce the same kind of comeback.

Instead it is Osaka, the only Japanese woman to win a major singles title, who will face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on Saturday. The winner will rise to the top of the WTA rankings for the first time; Osaka is currently No. 4, Kvitova is No. 6.

In the men’s semifinals, Rafael Nadal continued his relentless roll through the draw by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 at night. Nadal has not dropped a set as he bids for a second Australian Open title and 18th Grand Slam trophy overall.

Osaka’s fourth-round finish at Melbourne Park a year ago was her best showing at a major until last year’s U.S.

Open, where she outplayed Williams in the final. A victory over Kvitova would make Osaka the first woman to win two Slams in a row since Williams claimed four straight across the 2014-15 seasons.

Two years ago, Kvitova missed the Australian Open, just weeks after her left hand was stabbed by an intruder at her home in the Czech Republic. Back at her best during what she calls her “second career,” Kvitova surged to a 7-6 (2), 6-0 victory against 35th-ranked American Danielle Collins after Rod Laver Arena’s retractable roof was closed as the temperature soared toward 105 degrees (40 Celsius).

Kvitova reached her first major final since the December 2016 knife attack that led to hours of surgery on the hand she holds her racket with — and first since winning Wimbledon for the second time in 2014.

“I didn’t know even if I (was) going to play tennis again,” Kvitova said. “It’s been a long journey.”

Against Collins, a two-time NCAA champion at the University of Virginia who was 0-5 at Slams until this one, Kvitova was more aggressive throughout, mixing big lefty forehands and well-timed pushes forward to the tune of a 30-9 edge in total winners.

But the key to the outcome might very well have been what happened at 4-all after 35 minutes of action: That’s when the decision finally was made to close the 15,000-seat stadium’s cover, drawing cheers of approval from broiling spectators. Kvitova probably wanted to applaud, too. “I was happier than the fans that the roof closed,” she said afterward. “I like to play indoors. It helped me a little bit.”

She’s made clear over the years she is not a huge fan of playing in stifling heat. Not too many people truly are,

of course, but Collins is OK with it and thought the roof should have stayed open.

“I grew up in Florida and am used to it being really hot all the time. So I kind of embrace that very well,” Collins said. “Indoor tennis is a different game. Certainly had its effect.”

When play resumed after a five-minute delay, it went from being completely even to tilted in Kvitova’s favor.

She dominated the tiebreaker and the second set to stretch her winning streak to 11 matches. Osaka, meanwhile, extended her Slam run to 13 matches while putting a stop to Pliskova’s 10-0 start to the season. Osaka accumulated a 56-20 advantage in winners — and held on when it all could have slipped away.

She began the day having won 58 matches in a row after taking the first set, but that seemed in danger when Pliskova broke to end the second and had three break points to go up 2-0 in the third.

But Osaka steeled herself there, erasing the first break chance with a huge forehand, the second with a downthe-line backhand winner. On the third, another terrific backhand forced a forehand error into the net by Pliskova, who cracked her racket against the blue court. When Pliskova netted a return of an 83 mph (133 kph) second serve to make it 1-all, Osaka tugged at the brim of her pink visor and let out a big exhale.

The match would continue for another 28 minutes, but it basically was done, then and there. That stretch began a nine-point, three-game run for Osaka, and she was on her way. She would face one last break point at 4-3, but saved it with a 108 mph (174 kph) ace.

What’s Good Superbowl LIII Predictions

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com 2-Time Superbowl Championship Coach Bill Parcels, once famously said in an effort to fired up his offensive line in a New York Giants Playoff game, “this is what you work all off season for, this is the reason your lift all them weights; this is the reason you do all that (expletive)!” That’s what this coming weekend is about for the New Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. This coming Super Bowl is a culmination of each of their off-season workouts, months of team meetings and the ability to remains the final two teams left in the rigorous National Football League season.

After winning their respective Conference Championships on January 20th, the Patriots and Rams each have spent the past couple weeks scouting their opponent, making travel arrangements, installing a new game plan and preparing mentally for their next big game.

Although the Super bowl isn’t just a big game, these teams will be looking for any edge the can get, to help them win.

This includes being provided additional motivation by the opposing team or what’s commonly known as “bulletin board material.”

Los Angeles Rams defensive back Nickell Roby Coleman offered the Patriots some “bulletin board material” by mentioning to bleacher report that Tom Brady, “is not the same quarterback that he was. Whatever he was doing… he’s not doing as much of it anymore.” In a pep rally to send off the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady tossed the mic after starting a chant, “We’re still here, we’re still here!” The most interesting show of confidence came from Patriots Defensive Back Patrick Chung said, “We’re going to go down there and kick their ass, baby.”

Most of the guys on these teams are confident beyond belief! So, the thought of a little smack may be the difference in this monumental game is somewhat funny, though whatever it takes to your opponent of their game is the intention there. The Rams will need to more than smack talk to defeat the team going for 6 championship in 19 years.

Since 2001 the New England Patriots have done just enough to beat their opponent in their Super Bowl wins.

As they have won their 5 total Superbowl Championships by a total of 16 points; that would 3.2 points per victory.

As the mantra goes, “a win is a win,” so I am sure the Patriots aren’t losing any sleep do to the margin of their victories. Especially since they don’t give style points for in Superbowl victories.

With all their off-season trades and their free agent signings the Los Angeles Rams have pushed all their chips into the middle of the table this off season. There’s been no doubt about the assertiveness and effectiveness of young head coach Sean McVay, the front office has brought in the necessary pieces for this team to get in this position to win a Super Bowl Championship sooner than many people anticipated.

I see this game coming down to a contrast of coaching styles. Sean McVay will bring his high-powered Los Angeles Rams offense, led by Jared Goff and Todd Gurley, into this game with a lot to prove. As many fans around the league believe the Rams wouldn’t be in this position, were it not for a controversial call in the NFC Championship game against the New Orleans Saints. The Rams also boast the League’s Defensive Player of the Year in Aaron Donald along with the multiple pro bowl caliber free agents, they’ve added to complement their offense. Though this star-studded cast of defensive players haven’t played to expectations in the regular season, they have more than proved their value this post season when it matters most. This collection of talent has earned the Rams an opportunity to represent the National Football Conference in the Super Bowl.

The American Football Conference Champions are led by defensive mastermind Bill Belichick, who just happens to have extensive experience slowing down explosive offensives. Might you be familiar with those late 1980’s San Francisco 49ers led by Joe Montana and Jerry Rice or how about the combination of Jim Kelly, Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas? Each of these guys are NFL Hall of Fame inductees by the way. Never mind the combination of Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk and Torry Holt or the

I don’t expect this game to be much different! After spending some time listening to McVay, I am ready to take the field! So, I understand the passion and enthusiasm he brings to the Rams which has lead them to this point, however I expect the experience and consistency of the Patriots to be to much for the Rams too overcome.

I expect to see the Patriots attack the weakest point of that Rams defense, which is those Los Angeles Rams Linebackers, with quick passes to their running backs out the backfield and the with the utilization of their tight end Rob Gronkowski, which apparently may be his last game, over the middle of the filed. The Rams receivers should Be prepared for the holding and grabbing the patriots will be doing to slow down that explosive offense of the Rams.

Getting to Tom Brady early and often is the only chase the Rams have, to pull this game out.

Can the Ram defensive line, led by the two of the most ferocious defensive linemen in the league in Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh, get pressure on Tom Brady…? If they do, the Rams will have a chance to win. If they don’t Brady will consistently lead the Patriots on long drives, tiring out that Rams defense, then capitalizing on each of their mistakes to win the game. This is what I believe will happen, leading to an additional Patriots Championship and another Ton Brady Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award.

It has been said “The regular season is where you make you name, the playoffs is where you make your fame!” Hoisting that Lombardi trophy will certainly an opportunity for these teams to enhance their legacy. This is what this game is all about folks! On Sunday the talking stops and I believe will be adding to their legacy at the end of the game. Lopez fought resiliently throughout the fight. He continued to crowd the space, attack the body and surprise Thurman with power shots. In the 7th round, Lopez caught Thurman with a straight right hand which appeared to hurt him and sent Thurman into retreat mode.

Thurman landed over 130 punches in the fight ended the fight as well as landing 4% more of his punches than Lopez. Though Lopez’s increased activity in the later rounds impressed the boxing fans in attendance the majority decision went to Thurman by scores of 117-109, 115-11 and 113-113.

“I would most likely definitely take the Manny Pacquiao fight this year,” said Thurman. “I feel good. That was a beautiful fight. I’m ready to fight wherever Pacquiao wants it. Either way, I will be back later this year. Believe that.”

Marrero out landed Nyambayar 119-114, throughout the fight, but Nyambayar was the more accurate puncher by landing 7 percent more of his punches. This is was an impressive showing by both men, though the judges scored the fight for Nyambayar with scores of 116-11, 115-112 and 114-113.

“I fought a tough fight and left it all out in the ring,” said Marrero. “I had a tough opponent who came to fight.

I thought the point deduction came a little early, without that it’s a different fight. But at the end of the day, I fought hard against a good fighter. This sets me up for big fights,” said Nyambayar. “Whatever big fights are presented to us, we’ll take it.

Los Angeles County Host Immigrant News Briefing

By Charlene Muhammad California Black Media Immigrants in California make up approximately 178,000 Blacks whose numbers have more than doubled in recent years, yet they remain invisible with unmet needs, according to the Black Alliance for Just Immigration.

Black immigrants face issues of cancellations of Temporary Protective Status and Deferred Enforced Departure for Haiti and African countries, attacks on family sponsored and diversity visas (sponsorships by families or by lottery), a Muslim ban, and minimal legal services.

At a time of deepening fear and distrust of government among immigrant communities, Los Angeles County leaders and a host of community partners are working to ensure their needs are met in 2019 and beyond.

The county held the briefing to mitigate or at least address the growing fears stemming from anti-immigrant policies of the federal government.

Approximately 6.5 percent of immigrants (11,570) are non-citizens, and 1 in 10 foreign-born Black immigrants are from Mexico. They lack language access, legal services, adequate healthcare and educational and job opportunities.

During the January 18, news briefing at City Hall, organized by Ethnic Media Services, Rigo Reyes said the

aim is to be more responsive in a culturally and linguistically competent way to the community and community partners are crucial in the equation.

As executive director of the Office of Immigrant Affairs for the Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, Reyes painted an impact picture with statistics and the county budget.

“The county has 10 million residents, a population larger than 42 states in the country … Of the 10 million, 45 percent are immigrants … nearly 60 percent of all kids born in the County of Los Angeles, at least one parent is an immigrant,” Reyes detailed. “Just think of dynamics in those mixed families,” he said.

From food and clothing to shelter and medicine, billions of dollars in funding is readily available to serve those children and families, and Reyes outlined just how far-reaching impact of the aid and services are.

“Forty-two percent of employees, not employable, but employed people in the County of Los Angeles are immigrants. Immigrants contribute 35 percent of the County’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product), similar to the population, so just what imagine what it means to the county just economically,” Reyes said. “If we don’t support these communities to do well, then the county doesn’t do well,” he added.

County Department of Public Social Services, explained that the State’s early issuance of CalFresh/Food Stamp benefits for February was not extra, but an advance due to the uncertainty around the federal government’s shutdown.

“What we’re trying to get the public to understand is these are not extra benefits for January, but they’re February benefits and that we really want to ensure they kind of like budget, because we don’t know what’s going to happen come March,” Molina stated.

DPSS administers various programs and services to families, children, single adults and elderly, she explained. It promotes health, economic self-sufficiency, and assistance in nutrition.

According to Molina, DPSS’s 14,000 employees currently serves over four million individuals in L.A. County. MediCal is one of its programs that allows immigrants, especially those considered undocumented, without all of their necessary paperwork, to apply and receive benefits, she said.

“That may be for only what we call restricted and emergency services, but it is an ability for them to at least minimize the out-of-pocket costs,” Molina stated.
