ABL E Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — A white police officer fatally shot a black security guard who was armed while holding a man down following a weekend shooting inside the suburban Chicago bar where the guard worked, according to an attorney who filed a lawsuit on behalf of the guard’s family.

Jemel Roberson, 26, was wearing a hat with “security” emblazoned across the front when he was shot early Sunday following the shooting at Manny’s Blue Room in Robbins, just south of Chicago. Four other people were shot and wounded, including a man who authorities believe fired a gun before officers arrived, Cook County sheriff’s spokeswoman Sophia Ansari said.

“Gillum and Abrams, no matter what, they have changed the idea that Democrats should not be fighting for these seats in the south, and that’s going to have 25 years of impact,” — Melissa Harris-Perry found new life when votes were finally tabulated from the more blue areas of the state like Broward and Miami Dade. Gillum said he conceded based on “the limited

information we had.”

That’s now changed.

As of Friday morning, Gillum was just 0.44 percentage points behind DeSantis, a margin of about 36,000 votes. A margin within 0.5 percentage points triggers an automatic recount, something the Florida Secretary of State would still have to approve.

“On Tuesday night, the Gillum for Governor campaign operated with the best information available about the number of outstanding ballots left to count,” Gillum spokeswoman Johanna Cervone said in a statement. “Since that time, it has become clear there are many more uncounted ballots than was originally reported.”

The campaign reportedly has hired attorney Barry Richard, who represented the Bush campaign during the contentious 2000 presidential election in Florida, who was “monitoring the situation closely and is ready for any

outcome, including a state-mandated recount,” Cervone said. “Mayor Gillum started his campaign for the people, and we are committed to ensuring every single vote in Florida is counted.”

Meanwhile, after initial and unofficial tallies in Georgia gave Kemp a seemingly insurmountable lead, absentee and other provisional ballots drew Abrams ever closer and also in the range of recount and possibly a runoff.

“All of the votes in this race have not been counted,” Abrams campaign manager Lauren Groh-Wargo said at a press conference on Thursday.

Under Georgia law, if no candidate achieves a majority, then a runoff election will be held. Kemp currently leads with 50.3 percent of the vote. Abrams is also close to the possible threshold to earn a recount in the race, which, following his resignation, Kemp would now not oversee.

Gov-Elect Gavin Newsom 1st Hires

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Former Hillary Clinton staffer Ann O’Leary will serve as chief of staff to Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom, the incoming governor announced Friday.

Newsom also hired former California Department of Finance Director Ana Matosantos to be his cabinet secretary.

O’Leary and Matosantos are Newsom’s first two hires for his incoming administration. Newsom will be sworn in as governor in January.

O’Leary will be Newsom’s highest ranking staffer and will help lead his transition team. She was a senior policy adviser to Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. She also worked in former President Bill Clinton’s administration.

Matosantos will help the governor oversee state agencies in what is typically the second-highest ranking cabinet position. She served as finance director for both outgoing Gov. Jerry Brown and former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“I pledged an administration that would dream big and demand more - and draw on the talents of some of the most capable public servants in America,” Newsom said in a statement. “That’s what Ann and Ana represent - lives of unrivaled professional accomplishment paired with a personal determination to serve the public good.”

Newsom also unveiled a new transition website where people can give feedback on his policy priorities and apply for jobs in his administration.

Wade & Union Have a Baby

MIAMI (AP) – Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade and his actress wife Gabrielle Union-Wade have a baby.

The couple on Thursday announced they’ve welcomed a baby girl into the world. The baby was born via a surrogate on Wednesday. It’s the first child the couple has had together; the NBA guard has three sons and the couple is also raising one of his nephews.

Wade announced the birth on his social media channels, calling her “our miracle baby.” The Wades did not immediately reveal the baby’s name.

Union-Wade has been very open about her struggle to have a child, and previously revealed that she has endured several miscarriages. The couple says Wednesday “will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days.”

Ex-Lion Accuses Pizza Chain of Discrimination

DETROIT (AP) – Former Detroit Lions Hall of Famer Lem Barney and his wife are suing a Detroit-area pizza chain for racial discrimination after being refused service.

The lawsuit filed in Detroit’s federal court Monday says Lem and Jacqueline Barney went to Happy’s Pizza in Commerce Township Nov. 2. The lawsuit says that when they tried to order, the manager told them to go to Happy’s Southfield location because “they would be more at home there.’’

The Barneys are black. Southfield has a majority black population and Commerce Township is mostly white.

The lawsuit says the Barneys called the police. The restaurant manager told an officer that the Barneys were denied service because workers were preparing for a corporate catering event.

“Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s shameful remarks prove once again how Trump has created a social and political climate that normalizes hateful and racist rhetoric. We’ve seen this in Florida from Ron DeSantis and others during this election season and denounce it.

“Hyde-Smith’s decision to joke about ‘hanging,’ in a state known for its violent and terroristic history toward African Americans is sick. To envision this brutal and degenerate type of frame during a time when Black people, Jewish People and immigrants are still being targeted for violence by White nationalists and racists is hateful and hurtful. Any politician seeking to serve as the national voice of the people of Mississippi should know better. GA Black Voters Suppression

By ERRIN HAINES WHACK AP National Writer ATLANTA (AP) – When Barbara Williams arrived at the Pittman Park Recreation Center just before noon on Election Day to cast her vote, she saw a line so long that the end wasn’t in sight.

“There were so many people, you couldn’t count them,” Williams recalled. “They were looped around. The line started at the door and it snaked around to the left.”

She ultimately waited four hours to use one of the three voting machines at the precinct where the 58-yearold retiree has voted in every election since she turned 18. Others reported similar challenges to voting at Pittman Park, located in the heart of Atlanta’s oldest black neighborhood: Hours-long waits and voters leaving in frustration. For Williams and others who sought to vote at Pittman Park, the hurdles echoed a long history of voter suppression unfolding in a race in which Democrat Stacey Abrams is seeking to become the nation’s first black female governor.

“I feel like they didn’t want her to win,” Williams said of Abrams. “They made things so that we would get aggravated and people would leave.”

The race between Abrams and her Republican opponent, Brian Kemp, is still too close to call five days after the election. Kemp has denied any attempt to suppress the vote. But his background as someone who, as secretary of state, deleted inactive voters from registration rolls and enforced an “exact match” policy that could have prevented thousands from registering to vote, has brought the issue of minority access to the polls to the forefront.

That’s especially true at Pittman Park, which has long been a center of black civic and community life. Many residents learned to swim there at the only pool they were allowed to use during the segregation era. Today, it offers after school care, classes for seniors and a space for local meetings.

It has been a precinct for as long as Douglas Dean, head of the Pittsburgh Neighborhood Association, can remember. Three years ago, it was consolidated with a nearby polling station, doubling the number of registered voters to nearly 3,800, according to the Fulton County Board of Elections, one of the factors that may have played into last week’s lines.

“There is no excuse for what happened here in this election,” said Dean, 71, and a former state representative.

“Georgia is changing and there are some whites who want everything to stay the same so that they remain in power.

We’ve been fighting this battle for years. This is nothing new.”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who had been troubleshooting election irregularities in the city that day, was at the precinct Tuesday to investigate.

“They were four deep in the room,” Jackson said, describing the scene in an interview. “Some were in wheelchairs, some were on walkers, some were sick.

I appealed to them to stay. Either incompetence or corruption or both is what happened.”

Williams fought back, maintaining her place in line and pleading with others to do the same.

“It was important for me to vote,” she explained. “I vote in every election. I’m a human being and I have a life and I try for it to be better. A whole lot of people left. I even tried to get some of them to stay. I said, ‘That’s what they want you to do.”’

Joseph Jarrett came at around the same time as Williams, with his 4-year-old son in tow to show him the significance of voting. When he saw the line, Jarrett left, not wanting to stand there with a restless toddler.

He debated whether or not to come back. On his mind were lessons from childhood. He thought of the Mississippi voting activist Fannie Lou Hamer, a personal hero, and what she did for the community. Jarrett retuned to the line just after 2 p.m. Three hours later, he cast his ballot.

“I was determined to vote,” said Jarrett, 38. “Our whole community was galvanized by Stacey Abrams’ campaign. But some people came in, saw the line, and walked right back out.”

Others also tried to persuade people to be patient,

attempting to counter frustration with a festive atmosphere.

A band arrived and played music. Dozens of pizzas and refreshments appeared. When the rain broke, the sizzle of a grill began in the parking lot.

Jackson took selfies to try to lift spirits. He also went to a playbook that has worked for him since the civil rights movement: He mobilized the press and created a scene.

Soon, five brand new machines, still in the wrapper, were brought to the concrete building on Garibaldi Street. But by then, some of the damage had already been done.

“Some people had to leave and go to work,” Jackson said. “Some had to go home and get their medicine. Some people became discouraged. Denial of opportunity, denial of access to democracy ... That’s what voter suppression looks like. I’ve seen this for a long time.”

Voters in other black neighborhoods complained of long lines and inadequate resources, too. As the hour drew near for the polls to close, the Georgia NAACP won its lawsuit to extend voting hours for three precincts in Fulton County, including Pittman Park. When the lights were turned off after the last ballot was cast, it was 1 a.m., according to workers at the center.

Nearly a week after the election, even those who were able to vote are left wondering whether they were excluded from the process, despite their perseverance. The fight continues, as Abrams has sued a southwest Georgia county over absentee ballots and has vowed to stay in the race until the recount is complete.

“I think she probably did win, but I don’t think she’ll be the governor, because I don’t think they’ll do the right thing,” Jarrett said of Abrams. “It’s a damn shame, because people really came out. For their votes not to be counted ... it’s like a disgrace to democracy.”

“By [Kemp’s] own admission, there are at least 25,000 outstanding votes, and hundreds if not thousands of more that we are learning about and discovering every day.”

The state chapter of the NAACP filed a pair of lawsuits claiming that students at Spelman College and Morehouse College were improperly forced to vote with a provisional ballot – or dissuaded from voting at all – because their names didn’t show up on voter registration lists.

And the second, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, seeks to preserve the right for voters in the Pittman Park Recreation Center area to cast ballots.

That was the precinct where massive lines formed because of too few polling machines. Even after five additional voting devices were delivered, some people waited four hours at the Atlanta site.

In a televised interview early Tuesday, former talk show host Melissa Harris-Perry said Gillum and Stacey would change the way Democrats campaign in the south for decades to come.

In saying so, Harris-Perry was clear that would be the case regardless of the outcome. “Gillum and Abrams, no matter what, they have changed the idea that Democrats should not be fighting for these seats in the south, and that’s going to have 25 years of impact,” Harris-Perry said.

Much had been written about Abrams’ opponent interfering with voting rights and early reports from Georgia indicated that many polling locations were not up and running in a timely fashion.

Voters in the Peach state dealt with long lines, malfunctioning election equipment and registration discrepancies as they swamped precincts Tuesday with an unprecedented turnout for a midterm election.

Wait times of more than an hour were the most common hurdle facing voters across the state, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported. But technical problems, like failing to plug in voting machines, worsened matters for some voters trying to get their ballots in.

Three precincts in Gwinnett County had some of the most severe difficulties, causing them to stay open past the normal 7 p.m. closing time, the newspaper reported.

The Annistown Elementary precinct remained open until 9:25 p.m. because of extensive issues with the electronic ExpressPoll system, which is used to check in voters before they’re issued voting access cards. AndersonLivsey Elementary and Harbins Elementary precincts also stayed open late.

Three more precincts in Fulton County also stayed open as late as 10 p.m. because of extreme lines, missing registration information and a shortage of provisional ballots. Those precincts were located at Pittman Park Recreation Center, Booker T. Washington High and the Archer Auditorium at Morehouse College.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson got involved at the Pittman Park Recreation Center precinct in Fulton County, encouraging voters to remain in line after they had waited for hours.

Only three voting machines were initially available before five more were sent out later.

“It’s a classic example of voter suppression, denying people easy access to exercise their right to vote,” Jackson said, according to the newspaper.

Colorado Abolishes Slavery, Finally The Secretary of State’s Office said the amendment to Colorado’s Constitution received 65 percent of the votes already counted. “The margin is such that there is no doubt,” Lynn Bartels, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, told reporters.

With four of the five precincts reporting, slavery in all forms was abolished in the Centennial State.

The Secretary of State’s Office said the amendment to Colorado’s Constitution received 65 percent of the votes already counted.

“The margin is such that there is no doubt,” Lynn Bartels, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, told reporters.

Abolish Slavery Colorado, a group that has crusaded for the abolishment, posted on its Facebook page, “It’s official! Amendment A passes!”

Over 15 state constitutions in the United States permit slavery as a way of legal punishment for those who’ve committed a crime, despite the 13th Amendment being ratified in 1865.

The current and unclear wording in Colorado’s constitution means “slavery and involuntary servitude may not be fully unconstitutional” according to the state’s ACLU chapter executive director Nathan WoodliffStanley, via the Atlanta Black Star.

Article II, Section 26 of Colorado’s constitution reads that there “shall never be in this state either slavery or involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.”

Voters on Tuesday seized upon the opportunity to change the language.

Going forward, the Constitution will read: “There shall never be in this state either slavery or involuntary servitude.”

Jumoke Emery of Abolish Slavery Colorado told CNN that voters almost got the amendment to pass two years ago, but blamed the legislators’ terminology for the outcome of the vote.

“I hope that this puts forth the message that our past doesn’t have to be our future, that by and large we as Americans are interested in fixing our mistakes and that there’s hope for our future,” Emery told the news outlet.

Those who are against amending the constitution say it’s not necessary because Colorado already bans slavery.

They also argued that certain prisoner programs could be

affected.

Since the 1860s, courts have interpreted the 13th Amendment as it plainly reads. “Once individuals have been duly tried, convicted, sentenced, and imprisoned, courts will not find 13th Amendment violations where prison rules require inmates to work.”

The compensation of prison labor today reflects this history.

In Georgia and Texas, the maximum wage in dollars per day is $0.

In Nevada, prisoners make $0.13 an hour.

The average wage is between $0.93 a day and $4.93 a day – less than an hour of work at minimum wage.

Conservative estimates put the value of output from prison labor at $2 billion annually.

Security Guard Shot by Police Continued from page A1 Midlothian Police Chief Daniel Delaney said in a statement. The person was later identified as Roberson.

The police department confirmed Tuesday that the officer is white, but it didn’t release any other details about the officer.

Roberson was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital. The other four people who were shot suffered wounds that weren’t considered life-threatening, Ansari said.

Attorney Gregory Kulis filed a civil rights lawsuit seeking more than $1 million on behalf of Roberson’s

mother, Beatrice Roberson. He said Jemel Roberson was dressed in black but wearing a hat with the word “security” when he was shot.

Kulis also echoed witness reports that Roberson was holding down another man outside the bar when the officer arrived and shot him.

The Rev. Marvin Hunter said Roberson was “an upstanding young man” and a promising keyboard player at his and several other area churches.

Roberson was trying to “get enough money together for a deposit on a new apartment,” said Hunter, the great-

uncle of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager fatally shot by a white Chicago police officer in a high-profile 2014 case.

Roberson also had hopes of someday becoming a police officer, according to his son’s mother.

“This was going to be my baby’s first Christmas with his dad and now he’s going to miss out on everything,” said Avontea Boose.

Illinois State Police are handling the investigation into Roberson’s shooting. The agency said it would not comment on the investigation until it is completed.

“The reality is that because physicians have bias, they treat their patients differently,” said Dr. Armen Henderson, an internist working at the University of Miami Hospital.

By K. Barrett Bilali Miami Times kbbilali@miamitimesonline.com Racism in the health care system continues to confound but a few researchers are taking a historic look and holistic approach to addressing racism’s effect on Black and poor communities.

One researcher is using his foundation-funded fellowships to dive into the barriers to good health in the Black community, namely Overtown, Florida. While another joined an organization that looks for ways to keep historically racist practices out of today’s health care system.

“Look at the health disparities in our communities,” said Daniel Gibson, regional vice president of the Allegheny Franciscan Ministries, a nonprofit Catholic organization, which works with partners to support life skills, training and economic development in urban neighborhoods.

“Life expectancy of a resident of Overtown is 16 years less than a resident in Brickell, [Florida]” said Gibson. “And they are less than a mile away from each other.” He said the average life expectancy in Brickell is 79, while Overtown residents die on average at 63 years of age.

Gibson participates in a three-year fellowship program, which addresses equity, diversity and inclusion in the health care industry. He is one of 40 leaders nationwide participating in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation program called Leadership for Better Health.

The foundation seeks to build a “Culture of Health” and draws participants from the medical professions, social scientists, urban planners, and others to develop leaders who will strive to make American communities healthier.

Gibson’s work in Overtown was the reason he was chosen to participate in this expansive study of how health is impacted by a number of social and economic factors.

His organization has been working and coordinating efforts to improve the lives of Overtown residents and has allocated $2.7 million for its Common Good Initiative to assist in community and human development programs.

“Our goal is to make Overtown a safe and healthy

place to live,” said Gibson.

‘So Much Trauma’ Gibson said that many youth and families who are living in urban corridors experience a high rate of poverty.

He said these environments lead to cases of depression, drug addiction and social malaise.

“There is so much trauma,” said Gibson. “There is a toxic stress that happens when we are living in underresourced, impoverished communities.”

Gibson said they are looking at ways to address housing issues and educating people about quality of life, food, diet and work. They are also helping businesses to develop in Overtown and looking at the experience of the Black entrepreneur.

“Health does not have to be a pill; it does not have to be a doctor,” said Gibson.

The Common Good Initiative takes a holistic approach to curing the urban blight. Gibson believes that by addressing quality of life, the health of those affected by racism will improve.

“I will stop short of calling it a racist system, but you can’t deny the fact that one’s race and one’s address has an impact on your health, your life expectancy and your life experience in this world,” Gibson said.

Systemic Problem Dr. Armen Henderson, an internist working at the University of Miami Hospital, agrees that Blacks have suffered trauma, which has affected urban communities economically, socially and the overall health of its residents.

But he sees a more historic and systemic source to the problem.

“We should not be able to tell life expectancy by ZIP code,” said Henderson. “That should not be the case.”

Henderson said America’s history of racism continues to have an impact on the health of Black and poor urban communities.

“There is an argument that Black people are still suffering from the trauma of slavery today,” said Henderson.

“We have never reconciled the effects of slavery on people’s mental health.”

Henderson said that emotional and physical trauma for more than 400 years affect the well-being and outlook of Blacks every day. He said that day-to-day urban life, gentrification and uncertainty of the future causes stress, anxiety, depression and mental disorders, some of which never get treated.

“The system of medicine in general was started on a racist premise,” said Henderson, who attended Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, one of the three historically Black medical schools in the country. Morehouse in Atlanta, Georgia and Howard in Washington, D.C. have the other historically Black medical schools.

Historic Medical Racism J. Marion Sims, who has long been considered the “father of modern gynecology,” performed experiments on slave women to perfect the procedure of sewing up a woman after childbirth, said Henderson.

“If a woman had a baby naturally, he would constantly cut the women open in order to perfect the surgery,” said Henderson. Researchers have found that Sims even did unnecessary procedures on these women without anesthesia.

Henderson also points to the Tuskegee Study wherein 400 Black men infected with Syphilis thought they were being treated for the sexually transmitted disease when in reality, they were only being given placebos in a U.S. government-funded project.

“We knew the effect of Syphilis for hundreds of years.

And we already had a cure and they let these men pass it on to their wives and they passed it on to their children,” Henderson said. “Finally, it was the Associated Press who revealed this disaster, not doctors.”

Henderson says that the effects of racist history impact the urban setting of most American cities today.

“Most of these neighborhoods are built on faulty land,” said Henderson. He said they were formed on landfills and chemical dumps. Over the past few decades, the federal government has funded multi-million dollar clean-up projects of contaminated soil due to lead and toxic waste, sometimes called brownfields.

Henderson gave as an example a neighborhood he knows in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which once had a significant number of lead battery factories.

“A lot of people from the neighborhood got lead poisoning,” said Henderson. “And it is not fair. And there has been no effort to undo things like that.”

Henderson also knows of many cases where Black women were brought in to have their appendix removed and found later that their uterus was removed as well.

Health care disparities include the fact that Black women are more likely to die in childbirth, said Henderson, who is an active member of Dream Defenders since 2014.

The organization seeks to expose government policies, which lead to health care disparities while advocating for the poor.

“If you are Black and poor people, you have a two or three times greater chance of having your leg amputated as a result of diabetes complications,” said Henderson.

Henderson said that Blacks experience higher incidents of asthma, hypertension and high cholesterol as well.

Henderson said the onus is on physicians to check their bias at the door before going in to see a patient.

“The reality is that because physicians have bias, they treat their patients differently,” said Henderson. “Until we wrestle with this implicit bias, until we recognize this bias, then we are never going to get rid of our part in health care disparities.”

Seahawks vs Rams

By Cameron Buford Whatsgoodinsports.com The setting was near perfect at the Coliseum for the Seahawks to challenge the Los Angeles Rams. Because this is a division rival, the records for both teams coming into the game, should be tossed out. As these teams know each other extremely well, and the Seahawks have been playing better than expected. I must admit, I expected many more Seahawks fans to be in the house, considering the many fans that traveled to London to see them play a few weeks ago.

On the first drive of the game, the Seahawks were able to capitalize on a questionable roughing the quarterback penalty. On the second third down the Rams were flagged for a personal foul as, new addition, Donte Fowler Jr. argued with the refs. The Seahawks ultimately to cap this drive off with a 23-yard Touchdown pass by Russell Wilson.

The Rams come out in a hurry-up offense to start the game and they picked up 2 quick first downs before they actually huddled up. Out of the huddle, the Rams pick up 9 yards by giving the ball to their MVP Candidate Todd Gurley. As they have done all drive but one this season, the Rams get a TD in their first drive. As Jared Goff hits tight end Everett for a 10 TD pass.

Rashad Penny finally shows flashes of why he became a first-round pick for the Seahawks on his 38-yard gain.

Penny responded on his second carry with an 18-yard TD. Giving the Seahawks a 7-point lead going into the second quarter.

After a failed third-down attempt, the Rams 58yard drive ended with a field goal. Both teams swapped possessions before they were able to move the ball down the field and getting Gurley a sweet TD around the left end. This TD gave the Rams a 3 point lead right before halftime.

Coming out of halftime the Rams were able to add a field goal and push their lead up to 6 points late in the third quarter. The Seahawks responded with another Russel Wilson touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett. This TD gave the Seahawks a 21-20 as the clock winds down in the third quarter.

Having overcome multiple penalties, the Rams put together a solid drive to regain the lead early in the

fourth quarter. Down by 5 points, their attempt of a 2-pt. conversion fell incomplete. The Seahawks came back to kick a field goal and make it a 2 point game. Before the Rams came back on the next drive, fans in attendance saw Cooper Kupp go down with a non-contact knee injury.

That seemed to take some of the steam out of the Rams, though they were able to push the lead back up to 5 points with another field goal, with 7:34 to go in the game.

Just as the Seahawks began their drive, Donte Fowler Jr. was able to get the ball back for the Rams and a strip sack and fumble recovery. Russell Wilson said himself, “he made a great play; that’s why they brought him here.”

This fumble recovery lead to a Brandon Cooks rushing touchdown pushing the Rams leads up to 12 points. This double-digit lead with the amount of time on the clock essentially put the game out of reach for the Seahawks.

However, Russell Wilson managed to lead the Seahawks to another TD. Now down by 5, the Seahawks would need an onside kick to get them one more crack at winning this game.

The Seahawks elected to pooch kick the ball and play good defense to try to get the ball back, for a chance to win the game. Surprisingly, they did hold the Rams from getting a first down, forcing them to punt the ball. Russell had the one final chance with just over a minute to win the game on the road in front of over 72,755 fans at the Coliseum. Wilson managed to get his team to the Rams 35 yards with a series of scrambles. On first, second and third down the Russell passes fell incomplete, the drive was halted when the down pass fell incomplete.

These two teams always play each other tough, regardless of each other’s record. Though this was another inspired performance by the Seattle Seahawks. Though we saw some uncharacteristic penalties from the Rams in this game, the Rams were able to bounce back from their only of the loss of the season. The Rams now prepare for a potential Super Bowl preview as they face the Kansa Chiefs in Mexico City, Mexico next week. collaborative project gives its viewers a peek inside if the challenging times of the teenagers from the inner city of Washington D.C. As, it documents the dedication, hard work, and determination the boys put into their boxing careers, yet it doesn’t shy away from the hardships and disappoints they endure on their path to Junior Olympics.

Joining the stars of the “They Fight” documentary Lamar “Twin” Odoms, Quincey Williams and Ragahleak “Peanut” Bartee at the documentary premiere was Grammy Winner and recording superstar Common, NBA Legend Michael Finley, Reality TV Star Cynthia Bailey, Actor Theo James, Rapper DJ Taco, FOX Sports Host Mike Hill, R&B Duo Majid Jordan, Rapper Kid Ink, and recording artist

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com The Clippers welcome the scorching hot Milwaukee Bucks into the Staples Center for a matinee game at Staples Center. The streaking Bucks are coming off a 23-point win vs the defending champs a couple nights ago, so the Clippers will have their hands full in Saturday afternoons game. Until it becomes clear, I will be looking to see which one of the Clipper guards will take it upon themselves to be a leader get his teammates involved in the game.

The multitalented Clippers squad came out the gate hot in this game against the Milwaukee. By shooting over 52% and only allowing the Bucks to shoot 37.5% the Clippers were able to jump out to a 9-point lead to end the quarter. Tobias Harris leads the charge with 9 points in said quarter.

The Bucks fought their way back in the game behind the shooting of Brook Lopez, as he had his career high in 3-point shots taken and made. Lopez took four 3-point shots and made all four of them. Lopez also led his team in scoring for the quarter, though Antetokounmpo’s 10 points in the quarter, wasn’t far behind him. By shooting 66% from 3-point range, the Bucks were able to take a 2-point lead going into halftime.

Apparently, Doc Rivers and Montrezl Harrell had a conversation, at halftime, about his lack of effort in the first half. Clearly, he received the message as he came out with his customary energy, effort, and defense to inspire the Clippers in that quarter. The Clipper defense held the Bucks to under 35% FG% and an abysmal 8.3%

form 3-point territory. Not only did the Clippers win the quarter, the lead by 5 at the end of the third quarter.

Giannis and Bledsoe led the Bucks with 8 points each in the quarter, and Giannis also grabbed 7 rebounds in the quarter. Harrell 9 points and 4 rebounds in the quarter wasn’t enough to hold off the Bucks. As Bledsoe tied the game up on a three-shot that bounced around every inch of the rim before dropping in.

It was nip and tuck in the extra period. As the Bucks scored a total of 7 points and the Clippers scored 9 points.

The last 2, and most important, points came from Lou Williams, as he hit a runner from the right side of the court with .03 seconds remaining in the game to take the lead for good.

I generally enjoy watching this team play. I think they need a traditional point guard on their team, to get their legitimate scorers the ball in the right places. They have Harris who avg. 19.7 in his 2 years with the Clippers, Gallinari avg. 16.9, Lou avg. 22.1, these guys are scorers!

Why ask them to become playmakers? Get a guy who can facilitate for this team…? Though Shai Gilgeous Alexander is great in the open court, can he get his teammates ball, in the right places, at the right time is the question of the season for the Clippers in my mind. “Documentaries are my passion!” Andrew Renzi mentions when discussing the making of this “They Fight.”

As he got started on his first sports documentary Renzi wisely took the approach that “sports were peripheral to the story I was telling. Then it would all come together.”

Having lost his father at a young age, you could tell that he wanted to highlight the importance of a male role model not only in real life, but in the film as well.

This deep and touching “They Fight” documentary was set in Washington, D.C.’s Ward 8 neighborhood. For over two years the producers followed the journey of young boxers Peanut, Quincey and Twin to the Junior Olympics.

The boxers found a home as part of the Lyfe Style Boxing training program. As Coach and Mentor Walt Manigan fights to find a permanent home for his gym, he looks to assist young athletes to avoid the troubles he was caught up in. Though, he struggles with his own personal challenges.

Having sat out a year from boxing, through no fault of their own. Coach Scoop stepped in to redirect the boys back to the Lyfe Style Gym, so they could work their way back to the Junior Olympics. This film documents the close dedication which the boys put into their training and their efforts to become champions one day!

When asked about why he chose to work on this project Common mentioned, “Anytime I get to be a part of storytelling, that bring us closer to the humanity of who we are as black people, and who we are as people; I’m all for it!” He went on to mention that, “showcasing

different areas across the country/world that are naturally overlooked… gives people a better look at their humanity” Original music from multiplatinum artist 6lack, Odie, Octavian, and Boogie is featured in the documentary. This soundtrack, produced by Justice Baiden, encompasses the films’ premise and has fresh new tracks which were strategically inserted into the film. When asked about working in this project, Justice confirms“He (Renzi) made me understand, as to why the soundtrack is so important because it adds so much to the film. Capturing the story, capturing the emotions and capturing all the trials and tribulations is important.”

Argent Pictures partners Drew Brees, Tony Parker, Derrick Brooks, and Michael Finley in conjunction with two-time Grammy Winner’s Common’s Freedom Roads Productions company, created a touching film the pulls at your heartstrings as you find yourself living inside one, or all three, of these young men. In addition to enjoying the camaraderie they have developed with each of their coaches.

I admired the commitment and dedication the young men demonstrated throughout the documentary. I also like how the director wasn’t afraid to broach the various pitfalls which impact inner youth across America. James Luckey Jr. Editor, Observer Group Newspapers of Southern California UCLA welcomed Long Beach State to beautiful Pauly Pavilion Friday evening in an unexpected early season test.

It was a back and first first half with State having the biggest lead by either team (7). The Bruins ended the first half with a 4 point lead as starting point guard Jaylen Hands hit a 3 point a few steps inside of half court to get the Bruin faithful to its feet for the highlight of the first half.

Freshman McDonald’s All-American Moses Brown had his second career double double logging 17 points and

10 rebounds along with sophomore Kris Wilkes with 17 point of his own to lead the Bruins.

You couldn’t tell by the stats but the reserves were the brightest spot for the Bruins on the evening as they sparked a 23-5 run in the 2nd half that would key the victory.

Local freshman David Singleton (Bishop Montgomery) was 3-4 from distance to have 10 points off the bench.

Long Beach State was led by senior point guard Deishuan Booker with 31 points in defeat.

Trojans Fall at Home to Cal

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer USC had its dim PAC12 title hopes dashed as they fell to Cal 15 -14 at the Coliseum.The Trojans jumped out to a 14-0 lead at half as freshman QB JT Daniels hit Tyler Vaughns on a pair of touchdown passes.The first came on a two yard pass from Daniels at the 14:13 mark of the 2nd quarter. This came three plays after a 44 yard run by Aca’Cedric Ware to the Bears six.Then Daniels connected with Vaughns on a 23 yarder at the 7:29 mark of the period.Turn out that would be the only scoring of the game for USC.Vaughns had a solid day finishing the game with eight catches for 91 yards.Daniels finished the day completing 21 of 34 for 180 yards. Ware had rushing 103 yard on the night.

Amon Ra St. Brown had eight catches for 53 yards as the Trojans 5-5 (4-4, PAC 12) lost their second straight at home after reeling off 19 wins in a row.“Obviously it was a tough loss for our team overall” said USC head coach Clay Helton. “It was two really good defenses battling it out there tonight. People Magazine Names Idris Elba 2018’s

Sexiest Man Alive

By JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr. Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — People magazine has named Idris Elba as 2018’s Sexiest Man Alive, and the British actor says the honor has given him a boost of self-confidence.

Elba, who starred in “The Wire” and “Luther,” was surprised after being crowned this year’s winner, the magazine said .

“I was like, ‘Come on, no way. Really?’” he told the magazine. “Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out.

I was like, ‘Yeah, you are kind of sexy today.’ But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise — an ego boost for sure.”

Elba’s selection was revealed on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” with the actor appearing via satellite from London. Fallon had Elba perform poses to match the magazine’s cover description of him as a “sweet, smoldering superstar.” Elba said of his selection, “My mom is going to be very, very proud.”

The actor has also starred in Marvel’s “Thor” franchise and as Nelson Mandela in the film “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”

Elba, 46, also performs on the side under the deejay name DJ Big Driis and has his own clothing line. He is also planning a wedding with his fiancée Sabrina Dhowre.

The actor has a 16-year-old daughter, Isan, and a 4-year-old son, Winston, from previous relationships.

Elba told People about his upbringing as an only child of African immigrants growing up in East London. The actor said his parents were strict and he got picked on often while attending an all-boys school despite playing an array of sports including football, basketball, cricket, hockey and rugby.

“I was very tall and skinny,” recalled Elba, who stands at 6-foot-3. “And my name was Idrissa Akuna Elba, OK? I got picked on a little bit. But again, as soon as I could grow a mustache, I was the coolest kid on the block. Grew a mustache, had some muscles, bonkers.”

Past winners include Dwayne Johnson, David Beckham, Chris Hemsworth, Adam Levine, Channing Tatum and last year’s honoree, country star Blake Shelton.

Elba will be featured in a special double issue that will hit newsstands Friday. The actor said he tries to live life without few regrets.

“Life isn’t about thinking about what you should have done,” he said. “I think everyone should adopt the philosophy that tomorrow is not promised so just go for it today. You might as well do it to your heart’s content.”

Lakers Newcomer Tyson Chandler’s Block Caps Laker Victory James Luckey Jr Editor, Observer Group Newspapers of Southern California The homecoming for newly acquired Lakers center Tyson Chandler has been an eventful one to say the least.

Just a week prior he was in Phoenix playing minimal minutes for a last place Suns team. This week he has be a thriving force defensively for the Lakers first three game winning streak of the young Lakers season. He capped the week off with a game saving block of Atlanta Hawks star rookie point guard Trae Young.

Asked if he didn’t get to the ball before if he think the shot Young put up would have went in Chandler responded, “Yeah, I mean the way he was scoring down the stretch he has showed he can put up some numbers in

this league.”

LeBron James capped off a wild ending for him prior to Chandler’s block by missing both of his free throws while being down by one. Lakers Kyle Kuzma got the rebound after the second miss and attempted to score the go ahead bucket then came off the side of the rim when LeBron came out of no where to follow up the miss with a dunk to take the lead for good.

When asked about Chandler’s block at the end of the game James said, “I mean he’s huge. We had a spot that needed some reassurance and for us to be able to get Tyson in the fashion that we got him in and the measures

to implement him in the lineup right away and the impact he’s made in the three games we’ve had him so far is great.” James led the Lakers with 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assist.

Lakers second year point guard Lonzo Ball (Chino Hills) had a solid all around performance with 8 points, 6 rebounds, and a game high 11 assist. On Ball’s performance and why neither Ball nor Rondo finished the game Lakers coach Luke Walton replied saying, “I thought Lonzo was really good tonight. The way the game was going, I was planning on having him close it out with those starters

out there. When [the Hawks] got cooking and we couldn’t get stops, I felt like, for tonight, what we needed was Josh Hart’s toughness and ability to be able to switch. We were starting to blitz [Trae] Young’s pick and rolls, which means we were going to be in straight scramble mode. I just felt like Josh—who’s been playing power forward for us, shooting guard for us—was more equipped to handle that kind of defensive rotation, so we went back with Josh.

But I thought Lonzo was really good tonight in the way he came out and the way he played.” Walton also had high praises for Tyson with the block and the end of the game and his overall performances as a Laker saying, “He’s been big.
