Harris, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on her vote on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be Associate Justice of the Supreme Court: “When Judge Brett Kavanaugh was first nominated, I said that he represents a direct and fundamental threat to that promise inscribed above the Supreme Court, ‘Equal Justice Under Law.’ In the weeks since then, the basis for my concern has been confirmed.

Senate Republicans used raw power to rush an unfit nominee onto the Supreme Court when the American people have more questions than answers about Judge Kavanaugh’s suitability to serve.

When Dr. Christine Blasey Ford came forward with

serious and credible allegations of sexual assault, not only was she attacked by Senate Republicans, she was mocked by the President of the United States. The White House then prevented the FBI from investigating critical aspects of the allegations or interviewing key witnesses—not even permitting the FBI to interview Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford.

As a former prosecutor, I have led investigations and I have tried these cases in a courtroom. I have spent countless hours with assault survivors. And when I look at what has occurred over these few days, we have fallen short in fulfilling our constitutional duty to fully evaluate Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination. This process has been a disservice to Dr. Ford. This process was a disservice to survivors everywhere. And this process has been a disservice to the American people.

Advocates Voting Rights for NY Parolees

He was joined by a broad coalition of criminal justice advocates, formerly incarcerated people and community members at a state Senate Republican hearing on the State Parole Board’s conduct and the Governor’s restoration of voting rights to more than 24,000 people on parole.

Afterward, in a news release, many of the advocates said they were there to stand in support of voting rights for all people and the increases in Parole Board release rates, despite strong opposition from some Republican Senators.

They said the Parole Board should release more incarcerated people and that all people on parole should have the opportunity to vote, regardless of their crime.

“New York State Senate Republican leaders need to stop playing political football with the lives of currently and formerly incarcerated people,” said Jose Hamza Saldana, a community organizer with the activist organization, Release Aging People in Prison Campaign.

“After 38 years in prison, four parole denials and having just voted for the first time in my life, these political optics are a direct attack on me, my family and all incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women,” Saldana said.

“There are thousands of parole-eligible and community-ready people languishing in prisons across the state, some for over three decades. The Parole Board should release them instead of re-sentencing them to death by incarceration,” he said.

Saldana continued: “Parolees are returning citizens. We were once a part of the problem but today and for a long time we have been an integral part of the solution. We are committed to working with faith and community-based organizations to develop viable strategies to address the social ills plaguing our communities.

We will educate, organize, and advocate to retain our fundamental right to vote, and with the support of the community, we will vote our elders home. Let not one more of our elders die in prison.”

Chrys Ballerano, the Senior Director of the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault, said as an organization committed to healing and justice for all survivors and to truly ending sexual violence, the group recognizes that reliance on a biased and inherently reactive criminal justice system will not achieve these goals.

“Like many survivors, we would rather see public officials take action to ensure that survivors, their families, and communities have the comprehensive resources they need to heal and to thrive; that significant investments are made in community services and institutions that will prevent violence from happening in the first place; that people who commit harm are held accountable in a meaningful way that does not perpetuate a cycle of violence; and that people who commit harm have access to the services they need to stop committing harm,” Ballerano said.

New York State Sen. Luis Sepulveda, who serves as the ranking member of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee, said he fully supports Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision to restore voting rights to those who have served their time.

“I also believe it is time for a major overhaul of the state’s Parole Board, which the New York Times in an in-depth investigative report called a broken system,’” Sepulveda said.

Rev. Al Sharpton said his National Action Network (NAN) was honored to have Cuomo announce an executive order that granted conditional voting rights to more than 35,000 parolees in New York.

The announcement came earlier this year at the NAN convention.

Furthermore, the majority of incarcerated older adults have completed or even developed many progressive programs that promote education, constructive and critical thinking, and pro- social behaviors for the betterment of the community, said James Royall, a Re-Entry Advocate at Brooklyn Defender Services in New York.

of society is paramount to them. These are the very individuals who, after release, continue to make tremendous contributions to our society, whether as entrepreneurs, mentors, or loving family members” Royall said.

“The state must accelerate the release of these elderly people and uphold the voting rights of all those who are justice-involved.”

This week, the current GOP majority in the State Senate will hold hearings that many believe will only reinforce their position that the Parole Board releases too many people.

“We need to trust our Parole Board professionals to release individuals who do not pose a threat to public safety,” said Retired Albany Police Department Chief Brendan Cox. “We want them out of prison, contributing to society instead of costing us $100 a day that could be reinvested into programs that prevent crime,” Cox said.

By Lauren Victoria Burke NNPA Newswire Contributor An investigation regarding alleged abuse claims by the ex-girlfriend of Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, who is now running to be Minnesota’s Attorney General, have been found to be “unsubstantiated.”

Attorney Susan Ellingstad conducted the investigation into the claims. Ellingstad is a partner at the same Minnesota law firm as Charlie Nauen, the lead lawyer for Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor party.

“Addressing this allegation has been especially challenging given the important national moment we are in. I believe women who come forward must be heard, and to have their allegations fully investigated,” Rep. Ellison said in a statement. Shortly after the accusations by his ex-girlfriend were made public, Ellison said in a statement that, “Karen and I were in a long-term relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care deeply for her well-being.”

A draft report investigating the claims of Karen Monahan, who dated Ellison for three years, was obtained

by The Associated Press. Monahan’s claims first surfaced on August 11 via her son, Austin Aslim Monahan, on Facebook shortly before Ellison appeared on the ballot in the Minnesota primary on August 14. Ellison won the primary by a sizable margin.

Ellison’s case has become a political football as rightwing media has been quick to amplify the story. In 2007, Ellison became the first member of the Muslim faith ever elected to the U.S. Congress. In 2017 he became Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee after losing a close race for Chair to former Obama DOJ official Tom Perez.

Austin Monahan, followed by his mother Karen, asserted that video footage of the alleged incident in which he claimed his mother was dragged her off a bed by her feet

by Ellison existed. To date, no video of such an incident has been made public. For various reasons since August 12, Karen Monahan has refused to provide the video to reporters after repeated requests.

Ellison stated in August soon after the accusations were first made that no video would be found because no such incident ever took place.

During an interview on a local TV show, Karen Monahan talks to host Ahmed Tharwat about the #MeToo movement but no physical abuse at the hands of anyone.

The video has an upload date of December 2017 and Monahan currently has the video pinned to the top of her twitter account.

Polls conducted for the Attorney General’s race show that Ellison is holding a slim lead.

A Five Hundred Year-Old Shared History

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent The transatlantic slave trade is often regarded as the first system of globalization and lasted from the 16th century through much of the 19th century. Slavery, and the global political, socio-economic and banking systems that supported it, constitutes one of the greatest tragedies in the history of humanity both in terms of scale and duration.

The transatlantic slave trade was the largest mass deportation of humans in history and a determining factor in the world economy of the 18th century where millions of Africans were torn from their homes, deported to the American continent and sold as slaves, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – or UNESCO. The transatlantic slave trade that began about 500 years ago connected the economies of three continents with Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, England and France acting as the primary trading countries.

“The transatlantic slave trade transformed the Americas,” wrote Dr. Alan Rice, a Reader in American Cultural Studies at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston in the United Kingdom.

“Three factors combined to cause this transformation.

Large amounts of land had been seized from Native Americans and were not being used,” Rice said. “Europeans were looking for somewhere to invest their money and very cheap labor was available in the form of enslaved Africans [thus] the Americas became a booming new economy.”

The transatlantic slave trade also formed an essential bridge between Europe’s New World and its Asia trade and, as such, it was a crucial element in the development of the global economy in the 18th century, Professor Robert Harms wrote for Yale University’s “Global Yale.”

Harms, a professor of History at Yale and chair of the Council on African Studiescontinued: “There was one basic economic fact – little noticed by historians – that provides the key to the relationship between the direct trade and the circuit trade.

“When a French ship arrived in the New World with a load of slaves to be bartered for sugar, the value of the slaves equaled about twice as much sugar as the ship could carry back to France. For that reason, the most common form of slave contract called for fifty percent of the sugar to be delivered immediately and the remainder to be delivered a year later.

“The second delivery carried no interest penalty, and so the slave sellers were in effect giving the buyers an interest-free loan.”

In total, UNESCO estimates that between 25 to 30 million people — men, women and children — were deported from their homes and sold as slaves in the different slave trading systems.

More than half – 17 million – were deported and sold during the transatlantic slave trade, a figure that UNESCO historians said doesn’t include those who died aboard the ships and during the course of wars and raids connected to the slave.

The trade proceeded in three steps. The ships left Western Europe for Africa loaded with goods which were to be exchanged for slaves.

Upon their arrival in Africa, the captains traded their merchandise for captive slaves. Weapons and gun powder were the most important commodities but textiles, pearls and other manufactured goods, as well as rum, were also in high demand.

The exchange could last from one week to several months.

The second step was the crossing of the Atlantic.

Africans were transported to America to be sold throughout the continent.

The third step connected America to Europe.

The slave traders brought back mostly agricultural products, produced by the slaves. The main product was sugar, followed by cotton, coffee, tobacco and rice.

The circuit lasted approximately eighteen months and, in order to be able to transport the maximum number of slaves, the ship’s steerage was frequently removed, historians said.

Many researchers are convinced that the slave trade had more to do with economics than racism. “Slavery was not born of racism, rather racism was the consequence of slavery,” historian Eric Williams wrote in his study, “Capitalism & Slavery.”

In a dissertation for op-ed newsearlier this year, Roberts said, Africans were well-suited for plantation agriculture in the Caribbean and South America.

Also, the high immunity of Africans to malaria and yellow fever, compared to white Europeans and the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean and South America, meant Africans were more suitable for tropical labor.

“While Native Americans’ labor were initially used, Africans were the final solution to the acute labor problem in the New World,” Roberts said.

“The slave trade was one of the most important business enterprises of the 17th century. The undisputed fact is that the nation states of Europe stabilized themselves and developed their economies mainly at the expense of millions of Black African people,” he said.

During the 16th Century, when Europeans first made regular contact, West Africa had highly developed civilizations and Africans were keen to trade their gold, silver, copper, Ivory and spices for European pots, pans, cloth and guns.

However, Europeans soon became more interested in exploiting the people of Africa and forcing them into slave labor.

Most of the slaves were taken from the West coast, but some were kidnapped further inland from the interior.

“The biggest lesson to be learned from this dark and evil chapter in human history is that exploiting fellow humans for cheap labor never pays off in the long run,” said Pablo Solomon, an internationally recognized artist and designer who’s been featured in 29 books and in newspapers, magazines, television, radio and film.

“The acts of using fellow humans as beasts of burden to save a few bucks always ends up costing more in the long run both in real money and in societal decay,” Solomon said.

“Any rationalization of misusing fellow humans is both evil and ignorant,” he said.

greatly enhance its understanding is that the English began to enslave and export Irish persons to the Caribbean in the time of Oliver Cromwell, said Heather Miller, an educator and writer with expertise in the teaching of reading and writing, who holds graduate degrees from Harvard and MIT. Cromwell was known for his campaign in Ireland that centered on ethnic cleansing and the transportation of slave labor to the Barbados.

“Irish enslaved persons worked alongside African enslaved persons in the Caribbean,” Miller said.

However, historians generally agree that the most cruel and exploitative people have been the African.

“From the moment when Europeans took their slaves from a race different from their own, which many of them considered inferior to other human races, and assimilation with whom they all regarded with horror, they assumed that slavery would be eternal,” historian Winthrop D. Jordan wrote in his dissertation, “White Over Black: American Attitudes Toward the Negro.”

While tribal leaders assisted in the capturing of some African slaves, its without any doubt that foreigners were overwhelming the most egregious in their pursuit of men, women and children who would be placed in the horrors of forced labor and inhumane treatment.

The transatlantic slave trade would become the largest forced migration in history.

It started at the beginning of the sixteenth century and, until the mid-17th century, Spanish America and Portuguese Brazil were the major slave markets for European slave traders.

The Dutch participation in the transatlantic slave trade started in the 1630s and ended at the beginning of the nineteenth century, according to Henk den Heijer, professor emeritus in Maritime History at the Leiden University in Germany.

During that period, the Dutch shipped 600,000 Africans to the colonies in the New World.

“Initially, the Dutch were against slavery which was considered to be a catholic heresy. This antislavery point of view can be easily explained,” den Heijer said.

“Dutch seafarers first ventured across the Atlantic without the intention of enslaving anyone. They were mainly interested in the trade in Atlantic products like salt, sugar, wax and dye wood. At the beginning of the 17th century, however, the Dutch established small plantation colonies on the coast of Guyana, the area between the Orinoco and Amazon rivers,” he said.

“Most of the early settlements were populated with Dutch colonists and a few indigenous slaves. The Dutch embraced the slave trade and slavery on a large scale for the first time in Brazil.”

The slave trade also brought a great deal of wealth to the British ports that were involved.

Researchers noted the count of slaves and slave ships that came through the main British ports in 1771, when the average working person earned $35 in British currency per year and a single slave in good condition could be sold in the Caribbean for $25.

Liverpool had 107 ships and transported 29,250 slaves, historians noted.

London had 58 ships carrying 8,136 slaves while Bristol had 23 ships that transported 8,810 slaves.

Additionally, researchers said Lancaster had 4 ships that transported 950 slaves.

From 1791 to 1807, British ships carried 52 percent of all slaves taken from Africa while, from 1791 to 1800, British ships delivered 398,719 slaves to the Americas.

While it was the British who stood as the most

progressive couriers of whatever was transported through the sea, many other countries chartered ships and descended upon African nations to capture slaves.

Ships sailed to Africa loaded with guns, tools, textiles and other manufactured goods and crews with guns went ashore to capture slaves and purchase slaves from tribal leaders.

Slave ships spent months travelling to different parts of the coast, according to historians who described the devastation on a webpage titled The Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Captives were often in poor health from the physical and mental abuse they suffered.

The air in the hold was foul and putrid, according to historians.

From the lack of sanitation, there was a constant threat of disease. Epidemics of fever, dysentery and smallpox were frequent. Captives endured these conditions for months.

In good weather the captives were brought on deck in midmorning and forced to exercise.

They were fed twice a day and those refusing to eat were force-fed.

Those who died were thrown overboard. The combination of disease, inadequate food, rebellion and punishment took a heavy toll on captives and crew.

Surviving records suggest that until the 1750s, one in five Africans on board ship died.

At least two million Africans – 10 to 15 percent – died during the infamous “Middle Passage” across the Atlantic.

Some European governments, such as the British and French, introduced laws to control conditions on board.

They reduced the numbers of people allowed on board and required a surgeon to be carried.

The principal reason for taking action was concern for the crew, not the captives, historians said.

The surgeons, often unqualified, were paid headmoney to keep captives alive. By about 1800 records show that the number of Africans who died had declined to about one in 18.

When enslaved Africans arrived in the Americas, they were often alone, separated from their family and community, unable to communicate with those around them.

“When we arrived, many merchants and planters came on board and examined us. We were then taken to the merchant’s yard, where we were all pent up together like sheep in a fold,” according to a published description from “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano.”

“On a signal the buyers rushed forward and chose those slaves they liked best.”

Sold, branded and issued with a new name, the enslaved Africans were separated and stripped of their identity.

In a deliberate process, meant to break their will power and make them totally passive and subservient, the enslaved Africans were “seasoned,” which meant that, for a period of two to three years, they were trained to endure their work and conditions – obey or receive the lash.

It was mental and physical torture.

“The anniversary of the Transatlantic Slave Trade needs to be marked in some way, not celebrated, but recognized and memorialized because of the effects this decision had then that still affects the world today,” said Dr. Jannette Dates, dean emerita at the School of Communications at Howard University in Washington, D.C. “The Black Press continues to play its historic role in keeping issues of significance to African Americans in the forefront for black people’s awareness, knowledge and better understanding of our history,” Dr. Dates said.

What’s Good Supremacy Ranking Revealed

By Cameron Buford Whatsgoodinsports.com As week 5 of the young National Football League season concludes, we felt this would be a good time to reveal our initial What’s Good Supremacy Ranking of the season. Though the season is young, some team have already established themselves as the teams to beat this season, and others, well let’s just say, it’s still early in the season. So luckily, for those teams, there is still a lot of football to be played.

In reverse order we have listed what we believe to the be the top performing teams in the NFL; #10 Chicago Bears- The development of 2nd year QB Mitchell Tribisky and the recent signing of MVP candidate Khalil Mack has the Nears leading their division. Though their defense is young their new addition will give Trubisky many opportunities to score points. #9 Tennessee Titans- There is nothing pretty about the way the Titans play football! Run the ball stop the run and let your young agile make a play or two during the game.

This appears to be their formula and they the players that play to those expectations. Teams will have to play solid football to beat these guys! #8 Cincinnati Bengals- Andy Dalton and the Bengals have found ways to come back in games early this season.

Their defense has been solid for multiple years now, and if Marvin Lewis can find a way to get both units working together, this team may actually reach their potential. #7 Los Angeles Chargers- This Chargers team is loaded!

Their new addition Derwin James solidifies the back side of that defense. Matching that D, with that consistent offense lead by veteran Phillip Rivers will give them a chance to make a deep playoff run. #6 Carolina Panthers- As Cam Newton continues to develop, he now has talent around him to assist him on the offensive side of the ball. Now that the offense has become more efficient their tough, opportunistic defense which continues to keep them in each game and makes them a

tough matchup for most teams in the league. #5 New Orleans Saints- Just as they have been for years now, the Saints will go as far as Drew Brees leads them. Though they have improved their defense, this

is still an offensive team that will look to outscore most opponents they face. #5 New England Patriots- led by their cerebral Head Coach Bill Belichick and their MVP Candidate Tom Brady.

This well-coached team will not beat themselves and will

take advantage of any mistakes your team is likely to make. #4 Jacksonville Jaguars- These young Jaguars are showing they are ready for prime time! Their braggadocio’s defense paired with their strong running game, allows the young Blake Bortles to be a game manager with minimal expectations. This combination solidifies them as solid a playoff team and will make them a scary team to play late in the season. #3 Minnesota Vikings- They brought in Kurt Cousins to replace Case Keenum as their QB of the future. Drafted to be a backup QB, Cousins has been brought in to get the Vikings over the proverbial hump this season. Since the Vikings did make it to the NFC Championship last season, the Vikings brass are expecting Cousins to lead them to the Superbowl! That is a lot to ask of Cousins, in my opinion. #2 Kansas City Chiefs- This Chiefs team has also replaced their QB and young Patrick Mahomes is taking full advantage of his opportunity to start, by becoming the first QB in league history to reach 10 touchdowns thrown, so early in their season. His ability to throw the ball up the field has made that Kansas City Chiefs offense even more potent, than last season. #1 Los Angeles Rams- The Rams have been more impressive on offense than any other team in the league.

Goff is looking like the second coming of Joe Montana and the Rams offense is reminding fans of the “greatest show on turf ” teams from the past. Though their defense has been beset by injuries, their key defensive acquisitions should be healthy for their upcoming playoff push.

This is our initial Supremacy rankings of the season and this will remain a fluid situation from week to week.

This list will be revisited in the coming weeks, we will largely base our list on what we see from teams around the league. Bruins Look Better in Loss

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer The UCLA Bruins came up short with the best allaround performance of the season in a 31- 24 loss to Washington.

A Rose Bowl crowd of 51,123 saw true freshman QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson have his best day yet as a Bruin throwing for 272 yards on 17 of 38 pass attempts and one pick.

“We know were right there, so that’s a good feeling,” said Thompson-Roninson.

Junior running back Joshua Kelley had 125 yards on the ground and caught 3 passes for 39 yards in his best output of the season. He also became the first Bruin to rush over the century since Paul Perkins in 2015.

“They have a good defense over there,“ said Bruin head coach Chip Kelley. “We didn’t high-five in the locker

room. I am not a guy who get’s solace in we were close.

That’s not us. Close isn’t good. Close is bad. “ On the defensive side UCLA held the huskies to 126 yards on the ground. Bakersfield’s own Krys Barnes had nine tackles 7 solo, including 2 sacks also a pass break-up. ”We saw a lot of great things, said Barnes “the offense was doing great things.”

Running back Myles Gaskin lead Washington 5-1 (30) with 116 yards on 27 carries. Gaskin became the fifth player in Pac 12 history to have 50 rushing touchdowns.

Senior QB Jake Browning completed 18 of 26 passes for 265 and also ran for 49 yards to lead the 10th ranked Huskies.

The Bruins travel to Cal this weekend.

(AP) _ Eric Reid called his return to the NFL on Sunday “bittersweet,” saying it still hurts that his friend Colin Kaepernick has been “robbed” of his dream to play again in the NFL. While the safety is back in the league playing for the Panthers, Kaepernick remains a free agent. Kaepernick filed a grievance against the league in October of 2017 alleging teams have conspired to keep him out of the league because of his decision to protest racial and social injustice by kneeling during the national anthem.

“Any athlete in the NFL knows how hard you have to work to get here _ and his career has been cut short,” Reid said following Carolina’s 33-31 win over the New York Giants.

Reid said he is hesitant to express optimism that his signing will open the door for Kaepernick, but added “we’ll see what happens.”

Reid, who was signed as a free agent by the Panthers on Sept. 27, continued his tradition of kneeling during the anthem before Sunday’s game.

None of Reid’s new Carolina teammates joined him or stood near him at midfield. He became the first Panthers player ever to kneel during the national anthem, and did so under first-year owner David Tepper.

With a large American flag in the middle of the field, Reid went to his right knee as the “The Star-Spangled Banner” was sung by Marc Martel. After the game Reid wore a shirt that read “Know your rights” and listed 10 points.

Reid said last week he wasn’t sure if he would kneel before the national anthem. He ultimately decided to kneel, saying “I’ve always told myself when the time comes to stop kneeling, I will stop. But that time has not come.”

Reid added that more needs to be done to prevent

racial and social injustice.

“We have made baby steps , but people try to give crumbs but present them as cakes,” Reid said.

Kaepernick tweeted his support of Reid and other protesters on Sunday.

“My Brother (at)E_Reid35, with (at)KSTiLLS and (at)iThinkIsee12, continue to take a knee against systemic oppression. They are unwavering in their conviction! (hash)ImWithReid” Reid made his return to the NFL four months after filing a grievance against the NFL alleging teams colluded against signing him during free agency after he knelt alongside Kaepernick, his former teammate in San Francisco.

Reid said last week he was “still considering other ways” of protesting and raising awareness, adding that he was “still evaluating the scope of our country and will make that decision later.”

However, Reid made it clear he would continue to fight against racial and social injustice along with Kaepernick.

Reid, who is African-American, said he will continue to “stand up for my people.”

“Nothing will ever change unless you talk about it,” Reid said last week. “So we’re going to continue to talk about it. We’re going to continue to hold America to the standards that it says on paper _ that we’re all created equal.

Because it’s not that way right now. But we’re going to keep pushing toward that.”

Reid’s new teammates, including wide receiver Torrey Smith, a member of the Players Coalition, said this past week that potential protests would not be a distraction for the Panthers.

Smith said “no one cares” if he kneels during the national anthem.

Netflix Assembles New US Barbecue Chicken Pizza Production Hub in NM

(AP) – Netflix has chosen New Mexico as the site of a new U.S. production hub and is in final negotiations to buy an existing multimilliondollar studio complex on the edge of the state’s largest city, government and corporate leaders announced Monday.

It’s the company’s first purchase of such a property, and upcoming production work in Albuquerque and at other spots around New Mexico is forecast to result in $1 billion in spending over the next decade.

More than $14 million in state and local economic development funding is being tapped to bring Netflix to New Mexico. Republican Gov. Susana Martinez and Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, a Democrat, touted the investment and said lengthy efforts to put New Mexico on the movie-making map are paying off.

“After years of hard work to cut taxes and make New Mexico business-friendly, we’re seeing incredible results,’’ Martinez said in a statement.

Keller said the city has laid the groundwork to make sure the film industry is part of its economic development plan. He called landing Netflix a “transformative victory’’ for the city.

Netflix earlier this year announced it was establishing its first European production hub in Spain. That operation is expected to help the online video entertainment platform expand its Spanish-language content.

Officials did not release details about the sales price of the studio complex in New Mexico. The property includes several sound stages, production offices, mill space and a back lot.

Martinez, whose second and final term ends this year, initially talked about trying to rein in New Mexico’s film incentive program and an annual $50 million cap was placed on film incentive spending.

In 2013, she signed the “Breaking Bad bill,’’ named after the Emmy-winning TV drama that filmed primarily in Albuquerque during its five seasons. The legislation enhanced incentives for television productions.

New Mexico’s film economy has drawn more in-state direct spending from film and TV productions each year since 2014, topping out at $505 million last fiscal year, according to the state film office.

Cosby Lawyers Ask Court to Void Conviction, and Prison

By MARYCLAIRE DALE Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Bill Cosby’s lawyers have asked a Pennsylvania court to overturn the actor’s conviction and three- to 10-year prison sentence because of what they call a string of errors in his sex assault case.

The defense motion argued that trial Judge Steven O’Neill erred in declaring Cosby a sexually violent predator who must be imprisoned to protect the community.

Lawyers called the sentence more punitive than necessary, given the standard two- to three-year guideline range for the crime and the fact Cosby is 81 and blind.

They also said the trial evidence never proved the encounter with accuser Andrea Constand took place in 2004, and not 2003, or that Cosby was arrested within the 12-year time limit.

Cosby was arrested on Dec. 30, 2015, and was convicted at a second trial this April. He has been in a state prison near Philadelphia since the Sept. 25 sentencing, when the judge refused to let him stay out on $1 million bail pending appeal. Given his fame, wealth and use of drugs to molest the accuser, the judge said, Cosby could remain a threat to other women.

The defense motion said O’Neill improperly considered the trial testimony of five other accusers in sentencing Cosby, instead of limiting that “prior bad act” testimony to the question of his guilt or innocence.

O’Neill, in explaining the sentence in court, told Cosby he considered “voices from the past, your past,” and that he “heard their voices loud and clear,” the defense said.

The lawyers also challenged the state’s sex offender laws, which have been revised several times amid challenges they are unconstitutionally vague. The law requires judges to find that a sexually violent predator has a “mental

By Bill Fletcher, Jr. I was excited about the prospect of seeing Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You from the moment that I saw the advertisements. Yet I was not prepared for the totality of the film because the ads emphasized only one piece: the white voice.

Without giving away the plot, the “white voice” refers to how workers in a mythical telemarking firm are supposed to speak—over the phone—with potential clients. In order to win the favor of white clients, they are to speak with a “white voice.”

Every African American, and for that matter, every person of color in the USA, is familiar with the basic notion of a “white voice.” We are hit with that on a regular basis whereby our language, accents, etc., are viewed as somehow outside of the mainstream and, in many cases, perceived as threatening.

Riley took this to another level as a way of critiquing US society. He does it in an outstanding manner.

The film, however, is much more than about the white voice. It is about class struggle, racial justice struggle, gender justice struggle…in fact, it is about the very notion of collective struggle. And the setting is a near-future USA with a telemarketing firm whose workers look just like the working class of today. These workers struggle to band together to build a labor union and fight for their rights

but also to challenge a mega-company that has dangerous plans afoot.

Sorry to Bother You mixes satire, near-future science fiction, an appreciation of collective struggle, and a dire warning of the manner in which contemporary global capitalism is grinding us all down and destroying our humanity. It is the destruction of our humanity that Riley handles in such a superb manner.

When the film ended I remained seated as I processed what I had just seen. But I also wanted to overhear other viewers and get a sense of their comments. Many were as excited and moved as me. But there were a few people that exited the theatre who were clearly baffled by the film. I suspect that they were not expecting a film that was anything but linear. It did not just focus on race; it did not just focus on class; it did not focus only on gender. It was truly multi-dimensional and was at the same time pushing the audience out of their comfort zones so that they were not just viewing a film; they were forced to view the USA, only through very different glasses.

If you have not seen the film, you must put the time aside to do it. My concern with films as great as this one is that they will disappear before they have fully gained traction.

abnormality,” a term they said has no legal or psychological meaning, yet subjects defendants to lifetime counseling and police registration.

The defense motion, dated Friday, was posted to a public court docket in the case over the weekend. Kate Delano, a spokeswoman for the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, said the office will file a response.

The motion was filed by lawyer Peter Goldberger, a top appellate lawyer in the region, and Joseph P. Green Jr., who handled Cosby’s sentencing after more than a dozen other lawyers on the case had come and gone. A former appellate lawyer on the case is suing Cosby over what he called more than $50,000 in unpaid bills.

The defense also complained that an audio recording played to jurors of a 2005 conversation between Cosby and Gianna Constand, the mother of accuser Andrea Constand, was “not authentic.” They said they did not make the discovery until an expert review after the trial.

District Attorney Kevin Steele has dismissed that as a legitimate appeal issue, saying it’s been widely known that Gianna Constand started her recorder after the call began.

She had called Cosby to get answers about what happened to her daughter after Andrea Constand disclosed the assault a year later. The family went to police, who suggested they try to record Cosby.

During the call, Cosby acknowledged engaging in “digital penetration” after giving her daughter pills he would not identify, and offered money for Andrea to attend graduate school, Gianna Constand testified.

“If that’s what they’ve got, it’s beyond a Hail Mary,” Steele said at the sentencing, as Cosby’s lawyers sought to keep Cosby free on bail over the tape recording. O’Neill instead had Cosby led out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

Comedian Katt Williams Jailed on Assault Charges in Oregon

By ANDREW SELSKY Associated Press SALEM, Ore. (AP) _ Comedian Katt Williams has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a hired driver during an argument about taking him and his dog from the Portland, Oregon, airport to a performance in the city.

Williams, who was in jail Sunday, came to Portland to perform in Nick Cannon’s “Wild ‘N Out” comedy improv show Friday night.

The town car driver had swelling and cuts on his face and was treated at a hospital, according Katt Williams to Port of Portland police.

The comedian, 47, whose real name is Micah Williams, left in another vehicle and was arrested Saturday.

Williams has been charged with assault in the fourth degree, and an arraignment is scheduled for Monday. He

also was arrested for an out-of-state warrant from Georgia.

A publicist for Williams, whose comedy specials have appeared on HBO and Netflix, didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking comment. A jail official and a spokesman for the district attorney’s office said they didn’t know if the comedian had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

The incident happened at Atlantic Aviation, which handles private planes at Portland International Airport, police said. An employee who answered the phone Sunday said her boss had told workers not to discuss the case.

Williams won the Emmy Award last month for guest actor in a comedy series for his appearance in “Atlanta,” a TV show about two cousins in Atlanta’s rap scene.

His arrest comes more than a year after Williams was sentenced to three years of probation in Los Angeles after pleading no contest to stealing a celebrity photographer’s camera. Prosecutors said in April 2017 that he also needed to attend anger management classes.

In 2016, Williams got five years of probation after pleading no contest in Georgia to assault and battery tied to allegations he threatened a bodyguard while an acquaintance beat him with a baseball bat.

LOS ANGELES – As a continuation of her support for businesses in her district, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) visited Moog Aircraft Group’s Military Aircraft Customer Support Center in Torrance, CA. During the visit, Congresswoman Waters met with members of the center’s more than 500-person workforce -- many of whom are residents of the 43rd Congressional District -and discussed her legislative efforts and advocacy for local import-export businesses, aerospace companies, and other industries located within her district.

Moog Aircraft Group was founded in 1951 by William C. Moog Jr., the inventor of the electro-hydraulic servovalve -- a device that revolutionized aircraft and missile flight control systems. The company expanded to Torrance in the mid-1990s, and has emerged as a national leader in producing advanced flight controls for commercial and military aircraft.

During the tour, Congresswoman Waters was briefed on the Torrance Support Center’s repair and overhaul services, as well as Moog Aircraft Group’s partnerships with the U. S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which support advancements in critical military systems and safety measures for commercial air transport.

Rare Death Row Slaying UCLA Hall of Fame

By DON THOMPSON Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ One condemned inmate killed another Friday, the first slaying of a death row inmate in California in more than 20 years, officials said.

Jonathan Fajardo, 30, was stabbed in the chest and neck with an inmate-made weapon in a recreational yard of the cell house that holds the bulk of condemned inmates at San Quentin State Prison, said corrections department spokeswoman Terry Thornton.

Luis Rodriguez, 34, is considered the suspect, she said.

Investigators were trying to determine a motive and how he obtained or was able to make the weapon, she said.

Such slayings are common in California prisons but rare on death row, where the last one occurred in 1997.

“It’s very unusual,’’ said San Francisco State University associate professor Amy Smith, who studies capital punishment and the psychological impacts of death row.

“It’s not supposed to happen, of course.’’

There is high security on death row, were every inmate is housed separately but most are allowed to congregate in small groups in the exercise yard where Fajardo was killed, Thornton said.

Aside from the higher security, Smith said that statistically, prisoners serving life sentences and “folks who are on `the row’ generally have the lowest levels of prison violence, even though it would seem that they might do anything because they have the worst penalty. In fact, they actually have very, very low incidences of violence in prison.’’

Curry won election as regional director in 2014 and, as a member of UAW’s International Executive Board, he was responsible for Region 8, which consists of 12 U.S. states in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

Earlier this year, Curry was elected UAW’s SecretaryTreasurer.

He said the importance of organized labor can also be realized in the voice of freedom fighters like Maryland Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, who has continued to speak in favor of unions, a message Cummings delivered during the recent Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference.

“It makes it better for everyone when you have an elected leader’s voice who has constituents that he talks to across the district every day and Congressman Cummings has a chance to hear the issues on a national level,” Curry said. “He’s been one of those champions that believes and advocates for working men and women.”

It’s important that African Americans and other minorities understand the significance of Curry’s election to the Daimler Supervisory Board because labor representation has always been vital for all workers and with voices sought in numerous places, having diversity in the United States and in host countries could go a long way

in securing the livelihoods of employees, Curry said.

“The board is a reflection of the corporation’s global footprints and there’s a commitment… to diversity,” he said.

Despite its already rich history of supporting civil rights and other causes that have allowed them to partner with numerous minority groups, the UAW plans to continue to strengthen its relationship with historically Black colleges and universities and the Black Press, Curry said.

“We believe African-American newspapers need to be amplified. We have utilized a number of papers in the past including the Jackson Advocate and the Chronicle in Detroit as media outlets in our member messaging and organizing efforts.” he said.

“The voice of tolerance and inclusion needs to be amplified and this is not always done in the national media.

Whether its Rosa Parks then, or Dr. William Barber now, we’ve got to have an outlet for that message. When you look back at 1965 and then today in 2018, I don’t think the question would be if Dr. King and other leaders would be impressed with the technology of today as much as they would question the ability to message globally through new avenues of social media,” said Curry. “And we still face issues in this country that federal laws and other advocacy were to have addressed in the sixties.”

Each Sunday after attending Morris Brown A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C., Clyburn said he and other churchgoers habitually pick up the local Black-owned newspaper.

“People tend to pay attention to the headlines, the stories and the ads in the Black Press so it’s vitally important that candidates know this,” he said.

A former history teacher, Clyburn said Trump’s obsession with dismantling Obama’s legacy is reminiscent of tactics employed by Andrew Johnson to demean his predecessor, Abraham Lincoln.

“If you remember, it’s the same kind of reaction Johnson had to Lincoln and I remember sitting alone once in the Oval Office with Obama and I told him this would be the kind of reaction he could expect,” Clyburn said.

Johnson, who was impeached by House, had a vision of America as a White man’s government, according to historians.

His idea was that the South had never really seceded because it was illegal – secession was illegal – and so they had never really left the United States which meant, to Johnson, that once the hostilities ended, the country would go back to how it was before the Civil War, only without slavery, one historian, Annette Gordon-Reed, told NPR. “[Obama] was never going to get the kind of respect for his presidency that was shown to presidents before him,”

Clyburn said. “The narrative that exists in this country is that certain things Black folks are not supposed to do and one of those is being the president of the United States and this man, his administration, feel they have to do whatever they can to wipe out any semblance that Barack Obama was ever president of the United States.

“This man has a deep-seated hatred for people of color and it manifests itself every day,” he said of the current president.

Though he doesn’t support or agree politically with former Trump aide, Omarosa Manigault Newman, Clyburn said he was deeply troubled when Trump referred to her as a “lowlife,” and a “dog.”

“I’m the father of three daughters and I’m deeply insulted by the president of the United States referring to an African-American woman the way he referred to her,” he said. “Politics aside, I’m insulted greatly so by any person, irrespective of their station in life, to do this, but to have the president of the United States denigrate the office in this way? The president asked an important question when he was running, ‘What do we have to lose?’ We have lost dignity and the respect of the presidency because of his coarseness in the office. When you lose respect, you’ve lost about everything there is to lose.”

While he still supports Pelosi, Clyburn said he’s up for the job as speaker.

“I have always supported her, but I have always remembered a sermon I heard my father give a number of times,” Clyburn said. “That sermon stayed with me and he said keep your lamps trimmed and burning so as to be ready when the bridegroom comes. My point is, I’ve never forgotten that sermon so I keep my lamp burning so as to be ready.”
