By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor @StacyBrownMedia Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters went on the defensive when pundits and media friendly to President Donald Trump accused one of her staff members of secretly releasing the personal information of three Republican senators.

Waters and Trump have long feuded with the president calling her names and Waters simply calling for his impeachment.

However, as the contentious confirmation hearings of Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, roared on, allegations continued.

While the testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford took place in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing room, South Carolina’s Sen. Lindsey Graham and his GOP counterparts, Sen. Orrin Hatch and Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, saw information that included their phone numbers and addresses leaked onto Wikipedia.

Gateway Pundit and RedState, both Trump-friendly sites, reported that the IP address responsible for the leak was associated with Waters’ office and a staff member was responsible.

Waters went on the offensive: “Lies, lies, and more despicable lies. I am utterly disgusted by the spread of the completely false, absurd, and dangerous lies and conspiracy theories that are being pedaled by ultra-right-wing pundits, outlets, and websites who are promoting a fraudulent claim that a member of my staff was responsible for the release of the personal information of Members of the United States Senate on Wikipedia,” she said in a statement sent to various news outlets, including the NNPA Newswire.

“This unfounded allegation is completely false and an absolute lie,” Waters said.

She continued: “The United States Capitol Police and our internal IT specialist have determined that the IP address in question does not belong to my office or anyone on my staff.

“The member of my staff – whose identity, personal information, and safety have been compromised as a result of these fraudulent and false allegations – was in no way responsible for the leak of this information.

“My office has alerted the appropriate authorities and

Clearly, the hype and excitement are due to the new acquisitions the Lakers have made this off-season. This mixture of veterans mixed with their core of young players have given the Laker fans plenty of reason to be optimistic of this upcoming season.

Considering the current social climate, I wanted to know if Head Coach encourages his players to give back to the community and his response was, “We encourage our players to be themselves. If they feel strongly about and want to stand up for it; of course, we encourage that. That’s part of growth and becoming man. If you choose not to do anything and keep your beliefs to yourself, we encourage that too. But, we have our players back.”

On a similar note, I asked LeBron James why he chooses to give back to the community he modestly revealed, “It’s just who I am. Just my upbringing; where I come from…, being an underprivileged kid, that didn’t have much. For me to be in a position where I have a lot; I give a lot. It’s just who I am.”

This past Sunday, this new rendition of the Los Angeles Lakers took the court for the first time. Thought they took the loss to a young Denver Nuggets team, they will are likely to surprise many doubters around the NBA in the regular season. I will not be making any prediction on this team as I think there may be some changes in the works, once we see the complete product… I’ll consider making my prediction of the Lakers upcoming season.

If Cannabis is Legal in California, Why are so Many Minority Businesses Considered Illegal?

By Aubry Stone Special to California Black Media partners One of the great advantages of Proposition 64 – the 2016 ballot initiative that legalized adult use cannabis – was the idea that it could start to address the disproportionately negative impact of marijuana arrests among communities of color. This disparity is well documented. Just a few years ago, the American Civil Liberties Union reported that African Americans were nearly four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites, even though use of the drug was roughly equal among both populations.

Prop 64 not only promised to reduce or expunge certain past convictions, it also presented employment opportunities in the newly legalized cannabis industry as a gateway to the middle class for many underserved communities.

As the head of a statewide organization that supports many minority-owned cannabis businesses, I know firsthand that communities of color are not seeing the promised opportunities of this new marketplace being realized.

Since Prop 64 was implemented back in January of

this year, less than 15% of California cities are operating functional, licensed cannabis markets.

There’s more: Recently, the State’s Bureau of Cannabis Control has notified more than 900 cannabis-related businesses across the state to cease operation because they are unlicensed. These dispensaries, delivery services, cultivators, brands and farms – many of them owned by or employing people of color – were perfectly “compliant” for decades before January 1. But because state and local jurisdictions have been slow to issue the proper paperwork to them, the expectation is that they should close down until the bureaucrats finally get their act together.

Try to use that as an excuse when you can’t pay your rent, health insurance, or credit card bill.

This is particularly problematic given that the ACLU has also noted that opportunities for racial minorities to establish businesses are significantly less likely to occur as compared to white entrepreneurs. Just say “cannabis” in some business settings (yes, even here in California) and you will see what an uphill battle people of color can face.

But there’s a solution.

accountable and make the promise of legal cannabis a reality for people of color.

The first step is for local leaders to open up the cannabis markets in their communities. We must write, call, and confront local elected leaders and ask: Why haven’t they issued more licenses? When do they plan to do it? Will they make sure that small businesses have a chance? Will they make sure that the licensing fee structure doesn’t prevent small businesses from participating?

The barriers of entry to licensure are incredibly high, whether it be fees or unduly high state and local taxes.

Combined with local bans, this is leaving no path for small, minority-owned and -operated businesses to get a foot in the legal market. Breaking down these walls will be key to ensuring more diversity of applicants and allowing the licensed market to triumph over the illegal market.

Back in 2016, Californians overwhelmingly told the state that we supported legal cannabis. Now it’s time to remind our local leaders of that – and for them to make it really happen.

Immigrants Flow In, Guns Go Out

An often-overlooked piece of the border security debate is the flow of guns from the U.S. to Mexico and into Latin America.

The thousands of immigrants who have been coming across the U.S.-Mexico border in recent months include many trying to escape gang and drug violence in their homelands. The weapon of choice used to intimidate them is often an American-made gun.

The flow of drugs and immigrants into the U.S. has been well-documented for decades and become a regular part of the political debate. But weapons smuggling from border states gets less attention.

A 2013 report by the University of San Diego says the number of firearms smuggled from the U.S. was so significant that nearly half of American gun dealers rely on that business to stay afloat.

On average, an estimated 253,000 firearms each year are purchased in the U.S. expressly to be sent to Mexico.

Vermont Invites People of Color after SNL Skit

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) – Vermont’s top economic development official says he hopes people will visit or even move here after the state was lampooned as a Caucasian paradise in a Saturday Night Live skit that aired over the weekend.

The skit featured a group of people attending a “League of the South” meeting in which the white crowd was looking for an agrarian community where everyone could live in harmony “because every single person is white.”

Vermont is one of the whitest states in the country, but Community Development Secretary Michael Schirling invited people to come and see increasingly diverse communities and tourist destinations, including the African American Heritage Trail.

Schirling says Vermont does lack a good hip-hop channel, but the Vermont Flannel Company sent the cast flannel for use in future skits.

Judge Won’t Dismiss Charges for Police Bosses

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) – A judge won’t dismiss misdemeanor charges against five Cleveland police supervisors accused of failing to supervise a high-speed chase that ended in the deaths from police gunfire of two unarmed black people in 2012.

The supervisors’ attorneys argue that derelictionof-duty charges should be dismissed. They contend supervisors’ rights to a speedy trial have been violated because more than five years have passed since the Nov. 29, 2012 chase in which police gunfire killed Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams.

Cleveland.com reports that an East Cleveland judge recently ruled statutory requirements for speedy trials don’t apply since the case was previously appealed to the Ohio Supreme Court, which allowed it to be held in East Cleveland.

Attorneys for the supervisors plan to appeal the judge’s ruling. The supervisors have pleaded not guilty.

and anguish that she has already experienced since her story became public, Ford still supported the call for an FBI investigation of the incident, while Kavanaugh and Senate Republicans did not. What were they afraid we would learn?

“The American Bar Association, which has given Kavanaugh its highest ranking, also agreed there should be an investigation into the accusations against him. Failing to do so, ABA’s president wrote in a letter to the committee’s chairman and ranking Democrat, will ‘negatively affect the great trust necessary for the American people to have in the Supreme Court.’

“Thankfully the committee, after much debate, decided today to ask the White House to instruct the FBI to conduct a background check into Kavanaugh. It’s the right thing to do because proceeding with a confirmation vote at this point would be adding insult to the grave injury sexual harassment and assault victims everywhere already have endured.

Tiger Effect Creating Excitement for Ryder Cup

By JOE REEDY AP Sports Writer Tiger Woods wasn't the only one celebrating after he won the Tour Championship. Golf announcers and network executives are excited about the momentum Woods' comeback season can generate for ratings.

All three of the sport's major U.S. broadcasters have reasons to look forward to the next nine months.

CBS' Jim Nantz saw signs of Woods working his way back into contention at the Honda Classic last February in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, as well as The Memorial in Columbus and at the PGA Championship, where he finished two strokes behind Brooks Koepka.

“I saw him working his way through it and never doubted that he would win again,” Nantz said. “It could have happened earlier but he would have trouble over the last nine holes and lose some shots. But you don't say it was ever over with him because he will outwork everyone.”

The immediate beneficiary is the NBC Sports Group, which has this weekend's Ryder Cup on Golf Channel and NBC. It also had last weekend's Tour Championship

and saw a ratings increase of 178 percent. Sunday's final round had a 4.45 Nielsen rating. The round also had 18.4 million minutes streamed across NBC's digital platforms according to the network.

NBC Sports' Mike McCarley, who is the president of the network's golf coverage, said last weekend's FedEx Cup finale and this weekend's Ryder Cup present two interesting story lines.

“Last weekend he was squaring off against a generation of players who watched him. Now he is teaming up with them this week,” McCarley said from Paris. “It sets up a good story line for next year where Tiger will be squaring off with younger players who were inspired by him and attempted to fill the void. Whether it is in the spring or summer it is shaping up as a pretty dynamite season.”

NBC and Golf Channel have 30 hours of Ryder Cup coverage Friday through Sunday. Golf Channel will air Friday's coverage and NBC will have Saturday and Sunday.

Justin Leonard was paired with Woods at the 1997 Ryder Cup and will be a part of NBC's crew this weekend.

Leonard said what he is looking forward to this weekend is seeing how Woods and Phil Mickelson work together on the same team.

“I don't think we'll see a Tiger-Phil pairing, but it will be fascinating to watch how this unfolds, seeing how at the beginning of the year, we didn't think either of these players would be on this team, and now here they are,” he said.

With Woods back in regular contention, Nantz is hoping that the spotlight will also spread to other players like it did when Woods was at his peak.

“Now that he is re-credentialed as a winner again, hopefully players that win tournaments where he competes will get recognized more,” Nantz said. “I'm excited for the game and next season because of the depth.”

in the state, with a budget of more than $25 million. But with an HIV AIDS population of more than 5,000 people in the nine-parish Baton Rouge region, and more than 20,000 people in state, the need for HAART services far surpasses its budget.

“We have been assisting those with HIV for nearly three decades and it’s been an uphill challenge from the beginning,” said Tim Young, HAART CEO. In 1995 when HAART first opened its doors, the medical community was focused on keeping people with HIV alive. Since then, doctors and researchers have learned to treat HIV more effectively, which means fewer people are dying and people are living longer with their disease, said Young.

“When I began working at HAART, new medications were literally getting people out of their death beds,” he said.

Many people were seeing health improvements from the new medications that were becoming available, but many still were not, and even those who did often experienced serious side effects. Today, the medications are so effective that someone who acquires HIV can have a normal life expectancy if they adhere to an effective medication regimen.

“Now, we are learning how to assist people who have been living with HIV for as long as HAART has been in existence. That’s an amazing advancement. We assist many to cope with the challenges of helping to raise their grandchildren, something many thought would never be possible,” Young said.

HAART’s original role was to anticipate the services people living with HIV needed and weren’t receiving and to serve as the fiscal agent for Ryan White funding in the Baton Rouge area with other organizations to provide direct services. “The first thing we did was to recognize the need for a larger network of providers to serve an increasing number of people who were living with HIV disease with the advent of new effective medications. In the late ‘90s, we added Volunteers of America, Family Service of Greater Baton Rouge, and Care South to the network of Ryan White funded providers.”

These relationships aid HAART in providing medical

treatment, medication assistance, and case management to assist patients in navigating the health care system. HAART also provides medical transportation, dental services, and mental health services.

HAART has established Baton Rouge’s Open Health Care Clinic, located at 3801 North Blvd., to expand medical services and serve the wider community. “Over the past three decades years we’ve built an enduring community asset and positioned it to become an integral part of the health care network for decades to come,” Young said. “HAART has grown from a small organization, coordinating funding for a network of providers for a single disease, to one of the largest community health centers in the state, poised to grow its own network of clinics across the city, serving both children and adults from every walk of life.”

“The day of novel treatments is actually already here.

Early on, patients had a complex medication regimen that was difficult to achieve and often had side effects, some almost as serious as the disease itself. Multiple pills, some with and some without food, every four hours meaning interrupted sleep and other complications were normal.

Now, for most with HIV, treatment is one pill once a day.

That’s remarkable when you consider how far we’ve come in a relatively short period of time, although a lifetime for some and sadly too late for others. And they achieve complete viral suppression, so no more damage can be done to themselves by the virus and they can’t transmit it to others,” Young said.

But, in a city with the highest rates of newly diagnosed HIV cases in the nation, is HAART positioned to slow down the spread of the virus that cause AIDS? Young explained, “Despite the educational messages, many continue to participate in risky behaviors which expose themselves and others to HIV transmission. We’ve always relied on people changing their behavior and now we have a bio-medical preventative that can protect them even if they don’t take other measures to protect themselves.

HIV medication “It works a little like birth control (pills) where a person takes it every day to stop the virus from attaching to the immune system if they become exposed,” said Eugene Collins, director of prevention for HAART. “HIV disease is not just a threat to those who acquire it, but to potentially much larger numbers of people if left unchecked. It’s our responsibility to assist persons with HIV, not only to improve their personal health, but to ensure they don’t pass it on to others,” Young said.

After testing positive, Baton Rouge residents are provided services through HAART’s Red Carpet linkage program that gets them connected “immediately” with medical and mental health appointments, employment assistance, and housing. “We provide a total continuum of care, medically and socially,” said Collins.

According to Young, the strongest tools for HAART are the dedication and commitments of the non-profit’s board and staff. “We bring strong technical skills in the areas of medicine, psychology, finance, and marketing to bring awareness about the epidemic in our community and the solutions to limit and reduce its growth. Our new PrEP program, our new opioid-abuse outreach program and the broad spectrum of health and wellness services we bring to our patients are our strengths, thereby strengthening the community,” he said.

HAART has survived for 22-years despite the constantly changing health care environment, and HIV care changes even more than health care in general.

Time for African Americans to “Come Home” Nigeria’s 2018 Olojo Festival

In preparation for this year’s Olojo Festival, H.I.M.The Ooni Of Ife, stated, “We are set for a legacy project that will uplift one of the oldest cities in the world and put it on the global tourist map.” I certainly plan to let all of our NNPA member publishers and media company owners know about this historic city and all-inspiring annual festival. We should start planning now for next year’s festival.

In truth, African Americans have so many issues that are impacting our quality of life, some may ask, “Why should we focus on Nigeria and other nations in Africa?”

The answer to that question is quite factual. African Americans have a history that did not begin or end in slavery in the United States. Our ancestry in Africa needs to be better known, appreciated and embraced.

We must travel back to our ancestral homelands.

We must reconnect with who we really are without the trappings and ornaments of white supremacy. We are an African people. That is more than a Pan-African slogan from the 1960’s. Our children and our grandchildren should be told the truth about our African past, present and future.

It is our responsibility and opportunity to reconnect to Africa beyond sentimentalities. It is time to develop joint economic development ventures. Our Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) should teach African languages and culture as a prerequisite for graduation. We should hold our family reunions in Africa. Yes, Africa is very rich with oil, gold, diamonds, uranium, titanium, platinum and other precious stones and metals. Africa’s richest resource, however, is its human resource in the context of thousands of years of culture, language and tradition. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation with over 190 million people.

But from what we witnessed firsthand during the five days while we were in Ile-Ife, it was the culture that has had and will continue to have the greatest impact on unifying Nigerians and all people of African descent throughout the Diaspora. The Olojo Festival was one of most authentic and impactful cultural festivals that we had ever seen. We saw vibrantly displayed cultural genius in native language, traditional dress, dance, spirituality, pageantry and food.

In fact, we experienced a real-life “Wakanda” celebration of the sanctity, diversity, and cultural wealth of Africa in the ancient sacred city of Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

The Yoruba language and cultural manifestations were so evident at the Olojo Festival that we were all moved to tears of insatiable joy and passionate responses.

It wasn’t until I made a conscience decision to love my body and myself no matter what. I was tired of being unhappy. I found that confidence by helping others. In turn, I found my self-worth.

I didn’t know my worth or even know I was worthy for many years. How many of us feel or have felt that way?

We settle for the status quo, we keep our head down to not ruffle feathers. We would rather be loved any kind of way than none at all. What kind of life is that? What kind of worth is that? I struggled for many years over knowing who I was and what I stood for. There is no reason why, other than I let others define what I should look like, how I should feel about myself and accepted how they wanted me to be loved.

I found confidence by helping others. In turn, I found my self-worth. I write in my book, “Finding My Sparkle,” “I spent the early part of my life not truly loving myself. I was a victim of bullying, self-doubt, depression and self-hate. Often, I was put down by others that looked like me. I developed a complex about myself - to the point I didn’t want to live anymore, I wanted to be skinny, blonde hair and blue-eyed like my classmates - then I would be ‘pretty.’ I struggled with my self-confidence throughout middle school, high school and college. My body changed but I still wasn’t happy. It wasn’t until I made a conscience decision to love my body and myself no matter what. I was tired of being unhappy. I found that confidence by helping others. In turn, I found my self-worth. It didn’t happen overnight and it’s still not fully complete, but I know what I do and don’t deserve at this point in my life.”

When I learned to start saying no, my life began to flourish. “I spent over a decade being in relationships that took a toll on my self-esteem. Toxic relationships that suppressed my growth not only as a woman, but in my career and business. In order to please whomever I was dating I often cancelled my own self-care plans, such as working out or spending time with my friends and family.

My mother told me I was “too available” and I was. I was willing to compromise my feelings and priorities for another person. When you do that it allows others to walk over you. I use the word, “allows” because ultimately you are giving them permission to.

I had to learn it was perfectly okay to say “no,” and if someone didn’t respect that no – then that was their problem and not mine. When I learned to start saying no, my life began to flourish. You may lose some friends or

relationships but that is just God’s way of making room for those who truly need to be in your life. I had to learn this and many of you reading probably are already going through this, or you will – and that’s okay. You have to be with okay with letting go, loving people from a far and continuing to grow in a positive light. Harboring negative energy only takes away time where you should be investing in your career, business or own personal health.” I found my self-worth.

I know what you’re thinking: “Who is she to be preaching about self-worth?” No, I’m not an expert, or the most confident woman in the world, but I know what it is like to feel worthless. I also know how it feels feeling worthy. Honestly, I choose feeling worthy any day. Even if I am the only one who believes that I am. When you really think about it, why do we give OTHERS control or authority over our own self-worth? It is ours. Being fully transparent, you won’t find your self-worth in a day, a week or even a year. The journey can be long and often times emotionally painful but it is necessary! I didn’t get the opportunities I wanted until I became the person ready to receive them. That journey took me twenty-seven years. While we are building our careers, taking care of our families, let’s remember our why and our worth.

You are worthy. Live everyday as such.

My top tips on finding self-worth: 1. Patience Know, that you won’t find yourself in a day, a week or even a year. The journey can be long and often times emotionally painful but it is necessary!

2. Believe in You How can others believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself?

3. Have Faith Without faith any foundation will crumble.

4. Happiness is a choice Nothing more, nothing less.

5. Let it Go Cut the dead weight out of your life. If someone isn’t helping you to be better, don’t be afraid to love them from a far. It’s not your job to convince them that your worthy of anything.

Sports Clippers Add Improvements to Jarrett Middle School

By Cameron Buford Whatsgoodinsports.com As the Los Angeles Clippers embark on a new season, for the second consecutive season the Clippers have had their training camp in Hawaii. Rather than just hosting their training camp in Hawaii, the Clippers have partnered with Hawaii Tourism Authority to host the Clippers Hawaii Classic. Additionally, and most notably, the Clippers unveiled a newly renovated computer lab and fitness room for a local middle school.

Located in the Palolo Valley, Jarrett Middle School serves 250 students of diverse backgrounds in grades six through eight. Jarrett’s initiatives are in accordance with the STEM program, where science, technology and math subjects are the priority. Their technology resources have become an important instructional tool in the growth of their students learning the process.

“On behalf of all my classmates and teachers, thank

you from the bottom of my heart.” Remarked Jarrett student Mahina Monsarrat-Ohelo. “You have definitely helped hundreds of students to have a fighting chance to change the future.”

Several Clippers players, from Avery Bradley, Marcin Gortat and Luc Mbah a Moute were joined by Clippers mascot Chuck the Condor to present the updated computer lab and fitness center to the children and teachers of William P. Jarrett Middle School, in Honolulu, on behalf of the L.A. Clippers Foundation. The players also posed for photos with staff and teachers, while helping students make use of their new computers and instructed them in properly utilizing the equipment in the new fitness room.

Clippers Center Marcin Gortat mentioned, “It’s incredible. I never had a computer at that age. I never had a fitness room like that. Those kids will be able to learn something new.” He continued to say, “It’s incredible that we are able to give back to the community and we hope

that a lot of kids, now and in the future, will be able to learn from these computers and benefit from the class.”

“The Clippers’ partnership with Hawaii Tourism Authority is built on the principle of a lasting Aloha, and we’re thrilled to leave something behind in Hawaii that will not only impact current fans but future fans as well,” said Clippers President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker.

“The renovated facilities and new equipment will help level the playing field for Honolulu children, giving the students and teachers of Jarrett Middle School the resources they need to take advantage of their dreams.”

Their new fitness room was built with the intention of promoting healthy lifestyles through physical activities.

Included in the facility brand new equipment as well as yoga mats, exercise balls, and jump ropes. The Jarret Middle School computer lab has been completely refurbished to increase children participation and engagement of STEM subjects. The 55-inch TV and mini CPU, 37 new computers courtesy of the L.A. Clippers Foundation, planned to be utilized for 3D computer work, after-school coding classes and any number of various learning activities.

Jarrett Middle School Principal Dr. Reid Kuba spoke of the improvement by stating, “It’s just amazing working with the Clippers. I want the kids to use the computers and apply them to solve problems, dream of products and raise their level of thinking.” He continued on to say, “the kids love PE. They have it every day. Now, with the new PE room, we can do a lot more and really keep the kids constantly moving. Not many of these kids get exercise, so

having this room will both help now and pay dividends in the future.”

In addition to working with Jarrett Middle School, the Clippers hosted a total of four free clinic sessions for over 800 pre-registered children. The Clippers basketball clinic was held at the Hawaii Convention Center last week. Already having more than100,000 members the Jr. Clippers Youth Basketball program is among the largest in the NBA. As they work to inspire children through the game of basketball, the L.A. Clippers Foundation seeks to utilize its unique position to provide resources and opportunities that make a positive difference toward leveling the playing field for youth in Southern California. This is their second year of helping the youth of Hawaii, like last year, the Clippers refurbished the Stevenson Middle School computer lab.

Giving back is always a good thing! Giving back to a community you are visiting for just a few weeks each year is even more impressive! As was mentioned by Jarrett student, Mahina Monsarrat-Ohelo “hundreds of students to have a fighting chance to change the future!” This initiative has definitely built long lasting fans and will leaving a legacy for the younger generation to follow. A tremendous amount of props and credit should be given to the Clippers Foundations for their efforts. Like Father, Like Son at the Mohegan Sun

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer Recently the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut located along the shores of the Thames River hosted several basketball Hall of Famers to receive their induction rings.

Among them was HOF newcomer Grant Hill. Hill was part of the class of 2018 which inducted some 24 hours earlier in Springfield ,Mass. Hill was accompanied by his father Calvin. I spent time with them at the Mohegan Sun. The father–son duo had great similarities. They both attended great Universities. Grant at Duke and Calvin at Yale. They both were college champions and the both won Rookie of The Year awards after turning Pro. The younger Hill had a stellar career at Duke winning two NCAA National titles and was named ACC Player of the Year in 1994.

He was named Co-Rookie of the Year (along side Jason Kidd) after averaging 19 points per game.

He finished his NBA career after playing 19 seasons for four teams that included Detroit, Orlando, Phoenix

and the Los Angeles Clippers. He scored 17,137 points and had more than six thousand rebounds and was named to seven All-Star teams.

On this night at the Mohegan Sun he was accompanied by his farther Calvin Hill. “I am proud of him,” said Calvin. ”He’s worked hard all his life and he ends up in the Hall of Fame, you can’t ask for more than that.”

The senior Hill played college football about an hour’s drive down interstate 95 at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut.

At Yale he was an Ivy League Champion in football along with track & field.

He was long jump, triple jump and Heptagon Outdoor champion. He still holds the record for triple-jump.

He was the first Ivy League player to be drafted in the first round by an NFL team. He went on to play 12 years in the NFL (Dallas, Washington, and Cleveland). He became the first Dallas Cowboy to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.

He was a four-time Pro-Bowler who finished his career

with 65 touchdowns, 42 on the ground and 23 receiving.

The two are held together by wife and mother Janet Hill. They are truly an awesome father-son team. Special thanks to UCLA’s Ann Meyers Drysdale (HOF-1993) and Drew Drysdale.

Tillery and Milton Recognized by Walter Camp Foundation

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer Jerry Tillery of Notre Dame and McKenzie Milton of UCF were named Walter Camp Defensive and Offensive National Players of the Week.

Following a second straight six-touchdown performance, UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton was named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week.

Milton accounted for six touchdowns (4 passing, 2 rushing) as the13th-ranked Knights defeated Pittsburgh, 45-14. Milton, a junior from Kapolei, Hawaii passed for 328 yards (18-of-34) and four touchdowns and rushed for 51 yards and two more scores as the Knights improved to 4-0.

Jerry Tillery tied a school record with four quarterback sacks as 8th ranked Notre Dame defeated 7th ranked Stanford 38-17.The senior from Shreveport, Louisiana had 6 tackles, 2 QB hurries and a forced fumble to lead the Irish defense that held Stanford to 31 offense yards and three points in the second half.

Tillery and Milton; Tillery is the eighth Notre Dame player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the second this season (Khalid Kareem, DE, Sept. 2).

It is the second time that McKenzie Milton has earned Walter Camp Player of the Week honors (Nov. 26, 2017) and the third UCF honoree (Terrance Plummer, LB, Oct. 12, 2014).

Rams OLB Dominique Easley Undergoes Fourth Knee Surgery

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) – Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker Dominique Easley underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee Monday.

Rams coach Sean McVay expects Easley to be placed on injured reserve.

This is the fourth major knee surgery for Easley since 2011. Easley sustained his latest knee injury in the Rams' 35-23 win over the Chargers in Week 3 and did not play against Minnesota last Thursday. He had four tackles in three games this season after moving from defensive tackle to outside linebacker during training camp.

Easley tore his right ACL for the second time in training camp last year, forcing him to miss the entire 2017 season.

Dominique Easley Easley tore the ACL in his left knee as a sophomore at Florida season, and sustained a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee as a senior in 2013. He was still drafted 29th overall by New England in 2014.

Easley has 6 1/2 sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception in 41 career games.

NIGHT SCHOOL Film Review:

By Dwight Brown NNPA News Wire Film Critic It’s a match made in heaven — well maybe Atlanta — that’s where this film was shot. Kevin Hart, the rich, diminutive comic strongman shares the silver screen with the breakout star, and his former protégé, the very cray cray Tiffany Haddish. There’s a great potential for outrageous, sidesplitting humor and for the most part the duo lives up to that billing.

Expectations are also high because director Malcolm D. Lee is at the helm, fresh off his gigantic success with Girls Trip. The whacky script is the creation of five writers: Hart, Harry Ratchford (Kevin Hart: What Now?), Joey Wells (Kevin Hart: What Now?), Matthew Kellard (Real Husbands of Hollywood), Nicholas Stoller (The Carmichael Show) and John Hamburg (Zoolander). Hart and his crew establish a funny set of characters who act out like bad kids in study hall, only they’re adults working on their GED. Seemingly losers in life in need of a break.

Teddy (Hart) works at BBQ City selling ribs to happy customers. He’s dating Lisa (Megalyn Echikunwoke, TV’s Vixen), a professional who makes more money in a day than he makes in a month. She’s way out of his league, but he’s playing the charade of a rich boyfriend, with a Porsche convertible, fancy clothes and such. Teddy, a high school dropout, who thought he could hustle his way through a career, wants to get ahead in the world, but he’s limited by his pay grade and the lack of an education.

When he loses his job, his buddy Marv (Ben Schwartz, TV’s Parks and Recreation) wants to get the peppy salesman a position at his financial firm, but Teddy will need at least a GED to get started. Reluctantly Teddy heads back to Piedmont High School, his alma mater, to check out how he can get his certificate. He is mocked by the snotty high school principal Stewart (Taran Killam, Saturday Night Live), who has been jealous of Teddy going back to their days at that high school. The night school teacher Carrie (Haddish) and her new con artist student don’t hit if off at first. She doubts his dedication, and he thinks he is better than the other misfits in his night class. But sooner than later, Teddy realizes the importance of an education: “Night school is about second chances. Night school is all I have,” he says.

Truthfully, this comedy of physical pranks, bitch sessions, put-downs and social class jokes has its peaks and valleys. But the peaks are so high, thanks to the cast

Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish in ‘Night School’ and dialogue, that the valleys are unnoticeable. There’s the romantic angle as Teddy courts Lisa and learns that the truth is better than deception. There’s the mentor/protégé relationship he has with his teacher, who is not above taking off her belt and beating his ass when he becomes hardheaded.

The comradery that grows between the valueschallenged adult student and his equally lost classmates grows increasingly endearing: There’s Jaylen (Romany Malco, Think Like a Man), a brother whose job got replaced by a robot; the meek demented mom, Mary (Mary Lynn Rajskub, TV’s 24), who uses the class as a refuge from her family; the pouty millennial, Mila (Anne

Winters, Sand Castles); the dumb ex-jock dad, Mackenzie (Rob Riggle, Modern Family); Luis (Al Madrigal, TV’s The Daily Show) an adult who wishes he was a teen pop star like Justin Bieber; and Bobby (Joseph “Fat Joe “ Cartegna), a convict who’s being skyped in from his prison’s multipurpose room.

The physical comedy hits a high point in a scene in a martial arts studio where Carrie gets in a boxing ring with Teddy to beat the dumbness out of him. She asks him GED exam questions, and if he gets the answer wrong, she slugs, kicks or throws him while screaming “Focus!”

Not many comics can pull off this kind of unrepentant, humorous violence and make the audience believe it and laugh hysterically. She can. Haddish, as an African

American comic actress in high demand, is blazing a trail all her own.

Haddish’s perfect companion is the very disarming Kevin Hart. His self-deprecating humor is infectious: “Learning disabilities? Oh my God I have learning herpes!”

His smile could charm the wallet out of your pants and you wouldn’t notice. He wears hubris well, takes his lumps like a champ and he learns life lessons that sometimes make his comedies more than just a laugh. It’s no wonder the dude is worth millions and has millions of social media followers.

The supporting cast shines like jewels in a necklace around the main two diamonds. The chief scene stealer is Taran Killam, whose interpretation of Stewart, who has a penchant for using black inner-city slang, then denying he did it, is as funny as he was on SNL. Veteran actor Keith David (Platoon, Bird, First Sunday) as Teddy’s dad mocks his son unmercifully for being an idiot, while his twin sister (Bresha Webb) is a scholar. Mary Lynn Rajskub deadpans jokes about sex and family that you just don’t expect to come out of her mouth.

Malcom D. Lee keeps the proceedings going. With the help of editor Paul Millspaugh (Girls Trip) he gives the 1hr 51 min film a nice pace and rhythm that holds your attention throughout. The high school prom dance scene, a school break-in, and the aforementioned martial arts sequence shows off his keen ability to add action to comedies and help them stay afloat. If there is a flaw in the film’s production, it’s that a number of scenes look like TV sitcom sets, and when those moments come along, they don’t have much movement and you notice the harsh lighting (Greg Gardiner, Barbershop: The Next Cut) and the generic musical score (David Newman, Girls Trip) that would be more appropriate as Muzak in your local Sears.

A variety of subplots build and build to final moments that evoke laughter and warmhearted feelings.

That sensitive, emotional intangible spirit is not what most audiences will expect, but that’s what they will get.

They will leave the theater having experienced an orgy of laughter that culminates with a tender glow.

Once upon a time in the movies, there was Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Then Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. We can hopefully add Hart and Haddish to a long list of comedy icons who paired up and were even better as a team than apart. Comic matches made in heaven don’t come along that often. This one is quite precious. It’s golden.

Housewives of Potomac Star Suspended After Groping

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) – Bravo has suspended “The Real Housewives of Potomac” star Michael Darby after he was charged with groping a cameraman.

The cameraman said in charging documents that the show was filming in Potomac, Maryland, on Sept. 1 when Darby “grabbed and groped” his backside, WRCTV in Washington reported . Darby is charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree sexual contact.

In the documents, the cameraman said that “as I turned around (Darby) smiled and gave me a flirtatious look.” He told Darby to stop and then told his supervisor. The cameraman pressed charges three

days later.

The 59-year-old Darby is married to Ashley Darby.

Both are cast members on the Bravo show that's filmed in the Washington area.

“Bravo and Truly Original, the production company for `The Real Housewives of Potomac,' have suspended filming with Michael Darby,” the company said in a statement late Saturday.

Truly Original said it had launched an investigation of the incident, adding: “The review is ongoing and we are not able to comment further.”

The 2015 U.S. Open, which was the last time it was held out West, averaged 3.5 million viewers. By comparison, last year's coverage on Fox and Fox Sports 1 averaged 2.85 million viewers, which was an improvement from 2017 (2.67 million) when Woods did not compete.

“It's going to be at a course where he is very comfortable and lapped the field in 2000,” Fox's Joe Buck said. “Believe me, if we could package him in bubble wrap between now and next June we would.”

Even though most are looking ahead, Nick Faldo is still marveling over the comeback season that Woods had and said it has been a phenomenal run.

“Tiger didn't think he was going to play again, ever, and he's competed for the last two majors which has been an incredible, incredible turnaround,” Faldo said. “He must be excited that every week he plays, he plays a little bit better. I think, you know, having Tiger back is phenomenal for everybody, both inside the ropes and outside the ropes.

It's great having him back.”

Ban on Film Depicting Women’s Love Story to Resume in Kenya

By TOM ODULA Associated Press NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) – The first Kenyan feature film to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival has gotten overwhelming audience support since a court temporarily lifted a ban imposed by censors over the film's gay content, a lawyer said Friday.

“Rafiki” went from being screened once a day in one theater in Nairobi on Sept. 22 to three daily screenings at theaters in three of Kenya's largest cities as of Friday, attorney Sofia Leteipan said.

Leteipan represents director Wanuri Kahiu, who made “Rafiki.” The court ruled that the film, a love story featuring two women, could be viewed locally for one week to make it eligible for Oscar contention. The ban will resume after Sunday showings.

Ezekiel Mutua, the head of the Kenya Film Classification Board, has said that only “a small portion” of the country's population has seen it.

“There is no market for homosexual movies in Kenya.

Is there value for money in making a homosexual movie that will be watched by 300 out of 44 million people?”

Mutua said in an interview on Citizen Television earlier in the week.

Leteipan said that although Rafiki was not nominated for an Oscar, its screening across Kenya is a “huge win for the articulation of freedom of expression.”

She said that after the ban resumes, “we'll still be in court pursuing the original petition to have the ban permanently lifted and strike out provisions of Films and Stage Plays Act which restrict freedom of expression and constrain creativity.”

After watching the film, gay activist Immah Reid said “Rafiki” is a “well-structured conversation starter for sexuality in Kenya ... how gender appears and the violence people who don't conform to gender rules end up going through.”

Gays and lesbians in many parts of Africa face severe harassment, physical threats and judicial punishment.

It is illegal to have same-gender sex in Kenya and most African countries. A constitutional court in Uganda, which neighbors Kenya to the west, annulled legislation for life in prison for some gay acts.

Kenya's National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission is currently in court arguing that sections of the penal code violate the constitution and deny basic rights by criminalizing consensual same-sex relations between adults.

Maureen Nyambura, a university student and budding actress, said a movie in which the played a lesbian scene was banned and it is progress that “Rafiki” is being seen in a society that often doesn’t tolerate different sexualities.

“You don’t have to be a woman to fall in love with a man and vice versa. It's time Kenya embraces sexual diversity,” she said.
