Cosby Sentenced 3-10 Years

(AP) — His Hollywood career and good-guy image in ruins, an 81-year-old Bill Cosby was sentenced Tuesday to three to 10 years behind bars for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman, becoming the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to be sent to prison.

The punishment all but completed the dizzying, latein-life fall for the comedian, former TV star and breaker of racial barriers.

“It is time for justice. Mr. Cosby, this has all circled back to you. The time has come,” Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill said. He quoted from victim Andrea Constand’s own statement to the court, in which she said Cosby took her “beautiful, young spirit and crushed it.”

Cosby declined the opportunity to address the court before the sentence came down.

The punishment came at the end of a two-day hearing at which the judge declared Cosby a “sexually violent predator” — a modern-day scarlet letter that subjects him to monthly counseling for the rest of his life and requires that neighbors and schools be notified of his whereabouts.

The comic once known as America’s Dad for his role on the top-rated “Cosby Show” in the 1980s was convicted in April of violating Constand, Temple University women’s basketball administrator, at his suburban Philadelphia estate in 2004. It was the first celebrity trial of the #MeToo era.

Cosby faced a sentence of anywhere from probation to 10 years in prison. His lawyers asked for house arrest, saying Cosby — who is legally blind — is too old and vulnerable to do time in prison. YORK, Neb. (AP) – A California couple who said the marijuana they were hauling through Nebraska was intended for Christmas gifts have been given probation and conditional jail time.

York County District Court records say 71-year-old Barbara and 80-year-old Patrick Jiron were sentenced Monday to three years’ probation. They’ll be supervised at their Clearlake Oaks, California, home by California authorities.

The judge also sentenced them to three 30-day jail stints that can be waived if they comply with probation terms.

When the Jirons were arrested Dec. 19, they said they didn’t know it was illegal to transport marijuana through Nebraska. They told authorities the 60 pounds (27 kilograms) of pot was intended as presents for family in Vermont and Massachusetts.

Each pleaded no contest to possession of more than a pound of marijuana.

Dad Put Girl in Game Machine to Steal Prizes

SALEM, N.H. (AP) – A Massachusetts teacher has been charged with putting his toddler into a game machine at a New Hampshire shopping mall and using her to steal prizes.

Police in Salem say 34-year-old Anthony Helinski, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, turned himself in Wednesday, five days after witnesses at the Mall at Rockingham Park recorded video of a man encouraging the girl to hand out prizes from within the KeyMaster game. The video then shows the toddler climbing out of the machine.

Andover Public Schools tells WCVB-TV that Helinski has been placed on leave from his job as a middle school teacher.

Helinski is charged with theft, trespassing and child endangerment. He does not have a listed phone number and it was unclear whether he has an attorney.

The fight to protect those precious voting rights is still being fought on a daily basis by those who understand the struggle to make a difference through politics and public policy.

CFC is focused on improving quality of patient care along with enhancing education and advocacy for the Sickle Cell Disease community.

Sickle Cell Disease is a lifelong debilitating blood disorder that causes reduced blood and oxygen flow in the body, often resulting in organ damage and severe pain.

“The CFC was formed because there is urgent need to change the acute care paradigm for sickle cell disease patients. Pfizer [Rare Disease] is committed to working with the CFC to ensure that these issues are addressed as quickly as possible,” said Dr. Kevin Williams, chief medical officer of Pfizer Rare Disease.

As part of its mission of education and advocacy, the CFC published a report, “Improving Vaso-occlusive Crisis (VOC) Management,” which focuses on elevating the care paradigm in hospital emergency departments. Since Sickle Cell Disease treatment options are limited, the current practice is to focus on pain management, often with opioid medications, according to the report.

The impact of Sickle Cell Disease Sickle Cell Disease affects about 100,000 people in the United States, with the majority being those of African descent, Pfizer officials said. Although Sickle Cell Disease was identified more than 100 years ago, there has been little advancement when it comes to its treatment, management and the overall understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease.

VOCs are the hallmark symptom and one of Sickle Cell Disease’s most significant challenges. These pain crises, which some patients experience several times per year, are so severe that patients may end up in an emergency room, desperate for help, according to a published report.

Given the need for repeated treatments, people with Sickle Cell Disease may build up a tolerance to certain medications and, as a result, require higher doses over time.

Some emergency room staff may confuse dosage tolerance with dependence, and mistakenly view a patient with Sickle Cell Disease as a “drug seeker,” misunderstanding the legitimacy of the pain—a major barrier to care for these patients.

and physicians discussed their everyday challenges with suboptimal acute care for patients with Sickle Cell Disease.

According to Williams, who writes the regular column, “Ask Dr. Kevin Williams” for the NNPA Newswire, these challenges include: • The significant stigma that Sickle Cell Day patients face • Limited access to healthcare providers knowledgeable in Sickle Cell Disease and • The fragmented Sickle Cell Disease community “The dialogue that ensued resulted in the question, “Could the care paradigm for Sickle Cell Disease be advanced quickly if the various efforts and stakeholders were synchronized?”

“By including experts across multiple medical specialties reflecting acute Sickle Cell Disease care, along with advocates and patients with Sickle Cell Disease, the CFC model delivers meaningful insights, communication networks, and solid solutions to address critical issues in the acute care paradigm,” Williams said.

The CFC endorsed seven comprehensive principles — best practices for managing Sickle Cell Disease patients in emergency departments. CFC members believe these principles will improve Sickle Cell Day outcomes, thereby saving lives, improving patient satisfaction, and lowering costs of care.

“The Council would like to socialize these principles to medical institutions across the country and welcome institutions that might be interested in piloting these best practices,” Williams said.

“Sickle Cell Day” Advocacy Another way the council is attacking the issues is by advancing “Sickle Cell Day” as an advocacy program that will minimize the stigma associated with Sickle Cell Disease by educating health care professionals about the impact of the disease. According to Williams, “The program is focused particularly on VOCs through patients and advocate voices and empowers patients to ‘self-advocate’ for better care.”

The CFC is particularly interested in developing educational tools for others within the Sickle Cell Day community (patients, medical providers, researchers and families).

Council members have brainstormed several concepts such as slides, brochures, apps, and videos that could be used as vehicles for understanding and communicating the novel science of Sickle Cell Day and to increase understanding and awareness.

Expanding the evolving science supporting Sickle Cell Disease is just one of several ways the council is attacking key issues from the report to ensure both healthcare professionals and patients are aware of the latest understanding of the disease and will facilitate more effective conversations about VOC management. “An example of this is a realtime interface through which patients would be able to track and better manage their symptoms, as well as receive reinforcement from their support network,” Williams said, noting that the CFC would like to hear from others who are interested in helping advance those ideas.

“The CFC is seeking to learn more about programs at institutions that have been successful in educating their emergency department staff and reducing stigmas.

The Council wants to hear from institutions interested in developing and fielding an emergency department educational pilot program,” he said.

As outlined in the newly released CFC report, “there is work ahead to implement the overall CFC vision and specific workstream call-to-actions to create positive change for those affected by Sickle Cell Disease,” Williams added.

“The CFC hopes this report encourages ongoing efforts and helps to create new opportunities for collaboration and involvement in order to bring these initiatives to fruition.

America is on the Ballot

The United States of America, in 2018, is at a major crossroads and there is too much at stake to simply ignore the importance of this critical election.

If ever there was a time to vote, that time is now.

And while there will be many candidates whose names will appear on ballots across this country, it is actually the future of the United States of America that is the most important thing on the ballot this November.

These important midterm elections are shaping up to be some of the most important elections in modern times. The results of these midterm elections will not only determine the makeup of Congress, but they will also shape the overall future of this country.

The current president has single-handedly emboldened the worst elements of society to openly express their racist views and bigotry in ways that have not been blatantly seen in America since the days of the Civil Rights struggle.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and other legislation that was introduced, helped to deal with issues of racism, police brutality, economic disenfranchisement, discriminatory judicial practices and attacks on voting rights that have existed in this country since inception. However, the unrepentant hearts of racists in this country came to the forefront once again after the election, and subsequent re-election, of the nation’s first Black president in 2008 and 2012 respectively - President Barack Obama.

The current administration has shined a light on the darkness of racism and bigotry that has long been ignored and swept under the rug in this country. The divisive rhetoric and activity that this current administration has boldly encouraged, has now trickled down to many cities and states across this country, which is why voting in local and state elections is so important.

“All politics is local” is a popular political saying that is most often associated with former Democratic House Speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, Jr. When you think about the phrase in itself, it makes sense that the things that impact you the most take place on the local level.

Taxation without representation is a horrible position to be in. The President of the United States, whoever that elected person may be, plays an important role in what affects Black people, but the president can only do so much. All of the key decisions and pieces of legislation that impact Black people on a daily basis are made by individuals who are elected by regular citizens at the local, county and state levels of government. Those who are elected to office by regular citizens, then have the ability to appoint people to other key positions, as well as enact laws that will undoubtedly affect the quality of life of everyone, including those who didn’t vote.

The detrimental outcome of Black people choosing to completely disengage from the political process and choosing not to vote is a costly one. A non-vote is still relevant and just as powerful as if a vote were actually cast.

President Donald J. Trump understood that, and expressed his sincere gratitude for a great majority of Black people choosing not to come out and vote in 2016.

After winning his election against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Trump told a crowd of supporters at a 2016 rally in Grand Rapids: “The African American community was great to us.

They came through, big league. Big league. If they had any doubt, they didn’t vote, and that was almost as good, because a lot of people didn’t show up, because they felt good about me.”

At another rally the following week, Trump once again expressed his appreciation for Blacks choosing to stay home and not vote, saying: “We did great with the African American community…They didn’t come out to vote for Hillary.

They didn’t come out. And that was big — so thank you to the African American community.”

According to the Pew Research Center, the Black voter turnout rate in 2016 declined for the first time in 20 years in a presidential election, falling to 59.6 percent in 2016, after reaching a record-high 66.6 percent in 2012 when President Obama was re-elected. The number of Black voters who went to the polls in 2016 also declined, falling

by approximately 765,000 voters. In contrast, Whites were motivated to come out and vote, primarily because of the polarization of Trump, and had an increase in their voter turnout rate - 65.3 percent in 2016 versus 64.1 percent in 2012.

Over the past few decades, the number of Blacks choosing to stay home and not vote, coupled with the Black vote being constantly targeted by voter suppression tactics, has contributed to the election of many individuals who have not had the best interest of African Americans in mind.

Trump now has the potential of having a second Supreme Court Justice named to the highest court in the land, which could prove disastrous for many African Americans if he is confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate. The likelihood of this lifetime appointment, along with the other harmful pieces of legislation that have been introduced by this administration, only became a reality when Trump was elected to the office of the presidency by those who chose to vote and by those who chose to stay home and not vote.

This November, Black people must take voting and politics seriously if they are going to see collective changes in their communities, in their social status and in their daily lives.

At the recent Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Summit, Reverend Dr. William Barber challenged the attendees at the annual Phoenix Awards Dinner to step up and vote.

“We are called to be the conscious of this nation,” said Rev. Barber. “Our vision has to be bigger than Trump. We have to come together to change the course of our nation.

You better know who you are when you are under assault.

We cannot fail to be who we are. We must vote.”

There is no Black community in America that can grow and progress if there is no solid representation in place to make important decisions that impact the quality of life of its residents. Whether it is educating Black children, ensuring their tax dollars are fairly distributed, having access to quality healthcare, having community-based services available to them or receiving equitable treatment in the court of law, Black people must vote to ensure they have quality representation. If Black people don’t vote to ensure they have quality representation, then the potential of having ineffective representatives thrust upon them becomes a potential reality.

Again, Black people need not downplay the significance of these upcoming midterm elections in November. While the races for Congress and the various governorships across the country are extremely important, there are many down ballot races that are even more important and should not be ignored, as they will impact the daily lives of Black people for years to come.

In Harris County, Texas, which is the third most populous county in the U.S., there are 19 Black women running for various judicial seats on the ballot in the upcoming midterm elections.

Whether it is the judge who has the power to sentence your loved one to a lengthy prison sentence or the judge who is responsible for dealing with a lawsuit or the judge who has the power to determine what your child support payments and visitation rights look like through the family court - one or more of these Black women could very well be elected in a position that will impact your life in some shape, form or fashion in the very near future.

The same applies to all of the other important local and state races across the country.

All elections, especially local elections, are too important to overlook and ignore.

It is time for Black people to dig in, get in the fight and embrace their precious right to vote, which was paid for with a hefty price. More importantly, the fight to protect those precious voting rights is still being fought on a daily basis by those who understand the struggle to make a difference through politics and public policy. It is not the time to embrace non-voting. It is not the time to make a conscious decision to stay at home and avoid casting a ballot in 2018.

Chavis, Jr. NNPA President and CEO Washington, DC — No one questions the fact that for the past six decades, African Americans have overwhelmingly supported and voted for Democratic Party candidates for the United States Congress. In the upcoming 2018 midterm elections, African Americans by the millions will once again cast the clear majority of their votes for Democratic Party candidates for governors and members of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

The mission of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), representing the Black Press of America, is to report the news and to be an advocate for freedom, justice and equality for Black America and for all others who stand in opposition to racism and economic inequality and cry out for a better quality of life.

Last week, during the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, DC, the NNPA awarded Congressman James E. Clyburn (D-SC) our 2018 National Leadership Award for outstanding service and commitment to equality and justice.

From time to time, it is our mandate and responsibility

to express our collective editorial opinion about the interests of the 47 million African Americans who strive to empower, sustain, protect, and care for our families and communities.

It is, therefore, appropriate for me to support and express, on behalf of the 220 Black-owned newspapers and media companies affiliated with the NNPA across the nation, that Congressman Jim Clyburn should be the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.

During this time of renewed civic and political fervor for a more progressive, inclusive and diverse democracy in the United States, it is past-due time that Jim Clyburn should be given the opportunity to lead the U.S. Congress as Speaker of the House.

Clyburn is uniquely qualified to be the Speaker and his timely elevation to this historic and vitally important position will help put to rest the widespread notion that the Democratic Party takes African American votes for granted.

Given the current increased racial divide and regional polarizations in this regressive era of President Donald Trump, there is no better prepared member of the U.S. Congress than Jim Clyburn, with his base in rural and urban South Carolina, to help lead the House of Representatives forward.

Jim began public service as a college student fighting for equal rights and fair treatment alongside John Lewis in the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), of which they were founding members. I have known Clyburn since those transformative days in the 1960’s when young student leaders of SNCC and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., advanced the enactment and fulfillment of civil rights.

Clyburn served as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference for both Sessions of the 104th Congress. In the 105th Congress, he was unanimously elected Chair of the CBC. As CBC Chair, Jim successfully led the effort to desegregate the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.

Clyburn successfully engaged the GAO to conduct a study of restorations and preservation needs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, which led to comprehensive legislation to preserve and restore historic buildings on HBCU campuses across the country. The House recently appropriated another $8 million to continue this effort.

He has helped the caucus develop legislation to restore the protections of the Voting Rights Act and expand access to the ballot, and recently led the fight to defend the Affordable Care Act. In 2002, Jim was elected Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus. He was elected Chair in 2005,

Majority Whip in 2006, and Assistant Democratic Leader in 2010. In every capacity he has been inclusive and selfless. In addition, as Whip, he chaired the House Democratic Task Force on Hurricane Katrina, shepherding numerous bills into law, contributing to the rebuilding of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Today, as Assistant Leader, Clyburn has earned the respect of Democrats on Capitol Hill as well as throughout the country. Jim also has helped to raise significant amounts of money for numerous Democratic candidates.

Every August Jim and his wife, Emily - whom he met in jail during one of his SNCC incarcerations host a Health Fair, Food Bank, Back-to-School bash and Scholarship Banquet for families and communities along the I-95 corridor. This year they awarded $250,000 in cash, laptops and software packages to 127 needy, college-bound students, resulting in a total of $4.9 million in student aid their Foundation has awarded to students over more than 30 years. This effort by the Clyburns precedes Jim’s

outstanding congressional service.

In conclusion, in America’s 233 years as a republic, we have never had an African American Speaker of the House. The time has now come for serious consideration.

The midterm elections are only a few weeks away. We will be voting in record numbers and after the November 6, 2018 elections results are reported, there will be new opportunities and responsibilities to reorganize the newly elected U.S. Congress.

African Americans continue to be a major determinative component of the current resurgence of the Democratic Party and are key to winning and maintaining a new majority in the U.S. Congress. Simply put, we are very tired of hearing, “Wait your turn.” It is our turn. We demand respect and accountability for our longstanding and solid support of the Democratic Party. Elect Jim Clyburn Speaker of the House.

“When We All Vote, we get new ideas and new energy.

We get leaders that share our values” says Mrs. Obama in a new commercial running on prominent digital platforms and on radio across the U.S. The commercial will air over the 14 days before voter registration deadlines. On September 20, When We All Vote launched a text message campaign allowing people to text WeAllVote to 97779 for voter registration information.

The 2018 cycle has been propelled by two elements: Dislike of President Donald Trump and a record number of women running for office. According to NBC News, there were 53 female Senate candidates, previous record was 40 in 2016, and 476 female House candidates, with the previous record being 298 in 2012. Among the 476 women who ran for a seat in the U.S. House, about 75 percent were Democrats.

The 2018 election cycle is expected to be a record one for female candidates. Backlash to Trump’s presidency is widely seen as one of the main reasons as his disapprovals climb higher.

When We All Vote is planning a Week of Action in which volunteers will host nearly 2000 events across the U.S. The purpose of the events will be to register voters and recruit volunteers. When We All Vote previously announced that Michelle Obama will headline events during a Week of Action in Las Vegas on Sept. 23 and Miami on Sept. 28.

Along with the former First Lady, other Co-Chairs: Janelle Monae, Chris Paul, Tom Hanks and Faith Hill, will lead flagship events along with Loni Love, Keegan-Michael Key and Shonda Rhimes.

One player that has been catching everyone’s eye is Svi Mykhailiuk. His shooting in the summer league couple with his defensive prowess has teammates excited about his rookie season. Svi alongside of Moritz Wagner will bring youth to this mixture of accomplish veterans and a young core of talented players. Josh Hart, Kentavious CaldwellPope, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee and Michael Beasley will add to experience and tenaciousness to the bench.

Though it’s is far too early to make any predictions, I am confident that these Los Angeles Lakers are sure to be more formidable with James on the team, never mind the other free agents they brought in to join him. It may take a month or so, for their young core players to gel with the experienced players they brought in. Off Seasons like the Lakers endured this past summer are reasons for their fans to be much more excited about this than they have in recent years. Though the Los Angeles Lakers have missed the playoffs 3 of the last 4 seasons. The arrival of these new accomplished free agents will certainly change the makeup and mindset of this 2018- 2019 Los Angeles Lakers team.

Lakers Legend and GM Magic Johnson have brought in experienced champions to play next to their core of young players to advance their development and ultimately claim another championship trophy.

In 2017, the Lakers drafted Lonzo Ball with the #2 overall pick. They were also fortunate enough to have also drafted Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart late in that same draft.

A year earlier they drafted Brandon Ingram with #2 overall pick and Center Ivica Zubac with the 32nd pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. Though they haven’t made the playoffs over the past couple years, these recent draft picks have become the core of this Laker team.

Earlier in the summer, the Lakers GM Magic Johnson said confidently, “if we do not sign a top free agent this summer. I will step down because it will mean I can’t do my job.” Magic said this after being fined for tampering when he mentioned that they would like to have Paul George playing in the purple and gold Lakers uniform in this coming season.

Once Magic publicly put his job in the line when he stated they will sign a top free agent… that was a clear indication, that someone was coming. After Magic met with LeBron at the opening of Free Agency; a few days later James then announced that he will be bringing his talents to Southern California to play for the iconic Los Angeles Lakers.

Bringing on LeBron James was a no-brainer for the Lakers brass. Finding quality talent to surround James and this young core of talent with will be the challenge for them. To open training camp the will bring in former NBA Champions Rajon Rondo and JaVale McGee along with versatile Forward Michael Beasley and enigmatic Lance Stephenson. With these cast of characters, this is sure to be an entertaining team to follow and report on.

Many of the Lakers players spoke at their media day event, we have listed some of the notable quotes from the day; “My decision was based solely on my family and the Lakers,” said LeBron. When asked if he’s more interested in becoming a Laker, to become a Hollywood mogul, “I’m a basketball player. I play ball. That’s what I do.”

Knowing Lebron has made the Final 8 consecutive seasons, I was surprised to hear him say “I don’t believe the only thing that’s a success in marking a season is winning a championship.” As from my understanding, this seems to go against all that championships think and believe…?

When Lonzo was asked about his jumper, he emphatically stated, “Everybody’s saying my jump shot’s this new thing.” He continued on to say, “To me it’s not really changed a lot. I think I’ve just got a lot stronger, so I ain’t really gotta fling the ball like I did last year. It’s moved a little bit more to the middle, but it’s still on the left side.” ”I’m just trying to focus on my mechanics now: keeping my hand up, keep my elbow in more. I think me just being stronger in my upper body (makes) it easier to get it to the rim.” Lakers fans all over the globe will be tuned in to see his new jumper.

“I think the biggest thing is defensively — that’s been my focus this whole summer,” Kuzma proudly stated. He went on to say, “Really just trying to get my body right.

Get stronger, quicker, more agile. The knock on me last year was defense. Not every rookie can come in and be

perfect. That’s just one area I really wanted to fine-tune.”

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer USC kept their 18 game home winning streak alive with a hard fought 39-30 win over Washington State in front of 52,424. The Trojans bounced back from a loss against Texas last week.

The Trojans got off to a good start as on the opening drive Stephen Carr bolted through the line for a 50 yard run to the WSU 24 yard line. That run was the longest of the season for a Trojan. Three plays later VaVae Malepeai scored on a three yard run to give USC the early 7-0 lead.

USC was down 13 when Freshman JT Daniels connected with Michael Pittman on a 50 yarder to bring the Trojans to within six points 30-24 at the 9:03 mark of the third period. Daniels was 17 of 25 for 241 yards and the big stat was no interceptions. Seven different Trojans caught passes from him.

At the 8:03 mark in the Malepeai barreled his way into the en zone from three yards out. Daniels then hit Tyler Vaughns behind the WSU defense to give USC a 39-36 lead.

Malepeai and Carr led the ground attack with a combined 155 yards rushing.

Freshman Armon Ra St Brown a caught a 30 yard TD pass from his high School teammate Daniels with 14:31 to go in the 4th. St Brown now has 342 receiving yards in the first four games of his college career.

“I have always thought that diversity defines who you are as men .I can tell you how proud of them,” said Trojan head coach Clay Helton. “I thought we made strides this was a big PAC-12 Win” The USC defensive side held the Cougars to 92 yards rushing. They were led by Cameron Smith (15 tackles) and Talanoa Hufanga (9) in his first start ever. ”The coaches have been pushing me and telling me to stay focused,” said Huganga. “I think we did that better tonight.”

The big play was a blocked field goal by Gardner Minshew completed 37 of 52 passes for 344 yards and three scores to lead Cougars 3-1 (0-1 PAC12) who are the number two passing offense in the nation.

Walter Camp Award Winners Put up Big Numbers

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray had one of the best defensive games ever. The 6-2, 238 pounder from Missouri City, Texas sophomore set a school record with 28 tackles and helped lead the Sooners to a 28-21 overtime win against Army.

His play helped him earn the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week award.

Murray ‘s teammate Curtis Bolden also surpassed the 20 tackle mark with 23 stops. Murray and Bolden became just the second pair to have 20 plus tackles in a game. In 1974 Dewey Selmon (22) and Rod Shoate (20) helped with a 16-13 win over Texas.

Blake Larussa of Old Dominion earned the Offensive POW award after completing 30 of 49 for 495 yards in leading the Monarchs to a 49-35 upset win over (15th ranked Va. Tech. Larussa is the first ODU player to earn the award.

This is the 15 year The Walter Camp Foundation is recognizing an Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week during the Regular season. Recipients are selected by national media Members.

By Cam Buford whatsgoodinsports.com Every new season begins with a lot of optimism, this year for the Los Angeles Clippers is no different. They currently have a good mix of veterans and young players to lead them into the 2018-2019 NBA Season. Having missed the playoffs last season, the Clippers are surely focused on getting their team back into the playoffs; because, not only will they be fighting for basketball relevancy in the city, to win a championship you’ve got to win in the playoffs.

Thought this roster is likely to change based on some of the conversations which were had at the Clippers Media Day. As it stands now veteran Guards Avery Bradley, Patrick Beverly, Center Martin Gortat, and Forwards Danilo Gallinari and Tobias Harris will likely start for them as the roster is currently constructed. Coming off the bench they could then have Forwards Montrez Harrell Wesley Johnson, Sindarious Thornwell teamed Guards Milos Teodosic, Tyrone Wallace come off the bench.

Rookies Shai Gilgeuos Alexander and Jarome Robinson will be competing for playing time with 7-year veteran Mike Scott, Guard Jawun Evans.

While being inundated with questions about his team and any potential changes which may be bandied about, Clippers Head Coach became passionate when he asks if he encourages his team to participate in social activities.

He emphatically states, “Yes!” He went to say that he, “We better all go vote! I don’t care who you vote for; well, actually I do care.” “I think its more important now than ever! We’re about to, maybe, confirm a guy to be a Supreme Court Justice, that has sexually allocations against him; and it’s like we don’t care.” “We are so concerned about a guy kneeling for a national anthem, yet those same people concerned about that are willing to put a guy like this as our Supreme Court Justice…?”

Doc admittedly said he doesn’t “talk about it a lot” though he’s “always been political.” But he feels this is important for us, all. While encouraging people to vote he specifically pointed out the lack of black men voting for the presidency. ”Black men have to go vote. I think 7 percent of black men voted for the president. 7 percent. And we have to do better.” This was a powerful message coming from Doc Rivers, and I credit the Clipper Head Coach for sharing his thoughts and feeling on a topic that will have a much larger impact on America that basketball. We can only hope the player are following his lead, with regards to his demeanor and approach to life.

Though I anticipate some major additions to this team, the squad as I stand now is currently compiled of athletic guys that can also be aggressive on the defensive end. This makes for a versatile team, in this new world of ‘small ball’, which the game has morphed into. Gone are the days of Lob City with Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan for the Los Angeles Clippers; until some changes are made to this roster this new Clippers team will be a young team looking to grow and develop together.

Most of the media expect that this roster will be modified prior to the start of the season. I am confident in Doc Rivers as the Head Coach and the support and input from Jerry West himself, to make the appropriate decisions to get the organization back into championship contention. We will be watching the Clippers and their development throughout this season. Arthur Mitchell:

Ballet Legend and Pioneer Dies at 84

By Nsenga Burton Ph.D. NNPA Newswire Contributor The world is mourning the loss of legendary choreographer Arthur Mitchell. Mitchell, who danced with the New York City Ballet from 1956-1968 and founded the groundbreaking and world renown Dance Theater of Harlem died Wednesday of heart failure. Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times writes: “Mr. Mitchell, the first black ballet dancer to achieve international stardom, was one of the most popular dancers with New York City Ballet, where he danced from 1956 to 1968 and displayed a dazzling presence, superlative artistry and powerful sense of self.

That charisma served him well as the director of Dance Theater of Harlem, the nation’s first major black classical company, as it navigated its way through severe financial problems in recent decades and complex aesthetic questions about the relationship of black contemporary dancers to an 18th-century European art form.”

Social media tributes have been pouring in for the game changer.

Mitchell attended the School of American Ballet in New York City, eventually joining the City Ballet where he would study with world famous dancer George Balanchine.

Mitchell performed with acclaimed dancer Diana Adams in what would be a groundbreaking performance of Agon Pas de Deux, breaking racial barriers in ballet. Mitchell performed with City Ballet in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” for which he is greatly remembered. Mitchell also performed in Balanchine’s “Requiem Canticles,” which was a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Following his assassination in 1968. It was this critically-acclaimed performance that inspired him to co-found the Dance Theater of Harlem with mentor Karel Shook in 1969, proving to the world that ballet is for everyone.

Mitchell was 84.

The sentencing came as another extraordinary #MeToo drama unfolded on Capitol Hill, where Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh stands accused of sexual misconduct more than three decades ago.

The Cosby case “really raised awareness of the pervasiveness of ... sexual misconduct against subordinates and against women of relatively less power,” said Daniel Filler, dean of Drexel University’s law school. “For jurors, I think it’s inherently changed the credibility of the accusers.”

In the years since Constand first went to authorities in 2005, more than 60 women have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct, though none of those claims have led to criminal charges.

The judge ruled on Cosby’s “sexually violent predator” status after a psychologist for the state testified that the entertainer appears to have a mental disorder that gives him an uncontrollable urge to have sex with women without their consent. When the ruling came down, a woman in the courtroom shot her fist into the air and whispered, “Yessss!”

In a statement submitted to the court and released Tuesday, Constand, now 45, that she has had to cope with years of anxiety and self-doubt. She said she now lives alone with her two dogs and has trouble trusting people.

“When the sexual assault happened, I was a young woman brimming with confidence and looking forward to a future bright with possibilities,” she wrote in her five-page statement. “Now, almost 15 years later, I’m a middle-aged woman who’s been stuck in a holding pattern for most of her adult life, unable to heal fully or to move forward.”

She also wrote of Cosby: “We may never know the full extent of his double life as a sexual predator, but his decades-long reign of terror as a serial rapist is over.”

The AP does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they come forward publicly, which Constand and other accusers have done.

Constand went to police a year after waking up in a

fog at Cosby’s gated estate, her clothes askew, only to have the district attorney pass on the case.

Another district attorney reopened the file a decade later and charged the TV star after stand-up comic Hannibal Buress’ riff about Cosby being a rapist prompted more accusers to come forward and after a federal judge, acting on a request from The Associated Press, unsealed some of Cosby’s startling, decade-old testimony in Constand’s related civil suit.

In his testimony, Cosby described sexual encounters with a string of actresses, models and other young women and talked about obtaining quaaludes to give to those he wanted to sleep with.

Cosby’s first trial in 2017 ended with a hung jury.

He was convicted at a retrial that opened months after the #MeToo movement had taken down such figures as Hollywood studio boss Harvey Weinstein, NBC’s Matt Lauer, actor Kevin Spacey and Sen. Al Franken.

Constand said Cosby gave her what she thought were herbal pills to ease stress, then penetrated her with his fingers as she lay immobilized on a couch. Cosby claimed the encounter was consensual, and his lawyers branded her a “con artist” who framed the comedian to get a big payday — a $3.4 million settlement she received over a decade ago.

Five other accusers took the stand at the trial as part of an effort by prosecutors to portray him as a predator.

Cosby, whose estimated fortune once topped $400 million, broke barriers in the 1960s as the first black actor to star in a network show, “I Spy.” He went on to superstardom as wise and understanding Dr. Cliff Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” a sitcom that showed America a new kind of black TV family: a warm and loving household led by two professionals, one a lawyer, the other a doctor.

He also found success with his Saturday morning cartoon “Fat Albert,” appeared in commercials for Jello-O pudding and became a public moralist, lecturing the black community about young people stealing things and wearing baggy pants. He won a Presidential Medal of Freedom and countless Emmys, Golden Globes and Grammy awards.

As the allegations mounted, his career all but collapsed, “Cosby Show” reruns were taken off the air, and one college after another stripped him of his honorary degrees.

Poll Shows Young Californians Politically Engaged, Eager to Vote

By Manny Otiko California Black Media With one of the most important midterm election less than five weeks away, a new survey shows that young Californians are fired up and ready to head to the polling booth.

The poll, which was conducted by Evitarus, a public policy consulting firm, showed that young Californians were politically active and engaged in political events. The survey quizzed more than 2,000 Californians aged 16-24.

Seventy percent of them were people of color. The poll was funded by the California Endowment and Power California, an organization that encourages young people from underrepresented communities to vote.

“The midterm election will be my first time voting.

This is a very significant milestone because I finally have the opportunity to make my voice heard. Our voices are

not considered when decisions are made,” said Eugene Vang, a youth volunteer with 99Rootz from Merced, according to a press release.

Here are some of the findings: • 82 percent of young people said voting made a difference.

• 88 percent of the young people surveyed said they had discussed political issues with friends and family members.

• 58 percent had volunteered in their community and 29 percent had participated in a march or protest.

The poll findings go against the popular opinion of young people being self-obsessed individuals who are glued to their cell phones.

“Young people in California care about social issues and are engaged with politics,” said Luis Sanchez, coexecutive director of Power California. “It’s up to adults to

find strategies to engage and educate these young people who care about voting, but have not been mobilized to vote. We can’t afford to ignore the emerging electorate and their unique politics.”

Another interesting finding from the poll was the fact that 48 percent of young people have posted their political opinions on social media. This shows that many young people see social media as not just a plaything, but an important tool for expressing their political views.

This point was also shared in a recent Our Weekly article, which talked about how Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles was utilizing social media for publication and organizing.

“Social media has provided a helpful platform for organizers and activists from across this country and throughout the diaspora to connect with one another,”

said Jade Daniels, Black Lives Matter-LA, organizer on Communications and Arts and Culture Committees. “On social media, the black community has created a space for dialogue, a place for healing, a place to cultivate joy, and to build power among one another. Social media, arguably, has become a strong vehicle of liberation and radical resistance and base building in this time of such crises in the United States.”

Black Lives Matter owes much of its success to social media. The organization was born five years ago after the killing of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. According to Pew, the blacklivesmatter hashtag, created after George Zimmerman was acquitted of killing Martin, has been retweeted more than 30 million times.

The Evitarus poll stated that one in two young Californians surveyed identifies with BLM.

California Urges Trump to Drop Plan for Weaker Fuel Standard

By SUDHIN THANAWALA Associated Press FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – California officials demanded Monday that the Trump administration back off a plan to weaken national fuel economy standards aimed at reducing car emissions and saving people money at the pump, saying the proposed rollback would damage people’s health and exacerbate climate change.

Looming over the administration’s proposal is the possibility that the state, which has become a key leader on climate change as Trump has moved to dismantle Obamaera environmental rules, could set its own separate fuel standard that could roil the auto industry. That’s a change the federal government is trying to block.

“California will take whatever actions are needed to protect our people and follow the law,’’ Mary Nichols, chairwoman of the California Air Resources Board, testified at a hearing with federal officials in a region of central California that has some of the nation’s worst air pollution.

State Attorney General Xavier Becerra said California could not afford to retreat in the fight against climate change, citing wildfires and high asthma rates among children in the state’s San Joaquin Valley, where residents, environmentalists and state officials testified at the first of three nationwide hearings on the mileage plan.

“Stopping us from protecting our people, our jobs and economy or our planet is like trying to stop a mother from protecting her child,’’ he said.

The proposal announced in August by President Donald Trump’s administration would freeze U.S. mileage standards at levels mandated by former President Barack Obama for 2020. The standard is the number of miles per gallon of gas that a vehicle must provide.

Under the deal finalized under Obama, the standard would rise to 36 miles per gallon (15 kilometers per liter) by 2025, 10 miles per gallon (4 kilometers per liter) higher than the current requirement.

Trump administration officials say waiving the tougher fuel efficiency requirements would make vehicles more affordable, which would get safer cars into consumers’ hands more quickly. A major auto industry trade group says it supports annual increases in fuel efficiency but won’t say by how much.

Customers aren’t buying more efficient vehicles, Steve Douglas, senior director of energy and environment for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said in testimony

prepared for the hearing. The group represents General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler, Volkswagen, BMW and other automakers.

“No one wins if our customers are not buying the new highly efficient products offered in our showrooms,’’ the written testimony said. “The standards must account for consumer willingness and ability to pay for newer technologies in order for all the benefits of new vehicles to be realized.’’

Automakers are unanimous in favoring one standard for the whole country so they don’t have to design two vehicles, one for California and the states that follow its requirements and another for the rest of the nation.

Scores of people opposed to the Trump plan testified before representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, including local residents who said it would worsen their asthma.

More than 130 people, including doctors and electric vehicle advocates, signed up to speak, and the hearing was expected to last late into the night.

It was held in California’s San Joaquin Valley, the country’s most productive agricultural region but an area plagued by sooty air in part because of its bowl-shaped geography. The Sierra Nevada and two other mountain ranges wall in the 250-mile (400-kilometer) valley. Air pollution there is blamed for hundreds of deaths each year.

“We are asking the EPA to represent those of us who have asthma and respiratory disease,’’ said Janet DietzKamei, 73, a member of the Central Valley Clean Air Coalition.

DietzKamei said she is unable to leave her Fresno home on some days because the air is so polluted.

Environmentalists protested outside, hoisting signs reading, “Clean cars (equals) Clean air’’ and chanting, “Clean cars now.’’

Paul Gipe, 67, and his wife, Nancy Nies, 69, drove from the city of Bakersfield to join the demonstration.

“It’s a step backward, and it’s a statement that air pollution is acceptable. Damn the people, full speed ahead,’’ said Gipe, who writes about renewable energy on his website.

An avid bicyclist, Gipe said there are days he can’t ride because the air quality is so bad in his hometown.

California and other states have sued to block any changes to Trump’s proposal. The administration also

wants to revoke California’s authority to set its own mileage standards.

Ford CEO Jim Hackett said in a speech last week that his company is against any freeze of the sta ndards and favors “keeping the standard, not a rollback.’’

“We have plans to meet it,’’ he said.

The Obama administration had planned to keep

toughening fuel requirements through 2026, saying the stricter standards would save lives.

Trump administration officials argued they would raise the price of vehicles by an average of more than $2,000.

Transportation experts have challenged those arguments.

Hearings are also planned on Tuesday in Dearborn, Michigan, and Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
