A eHollywood Geoffrey Owens; Slams Int d Hollywood’s biggest names, including Tyler Perry, Halle Berry and Patton Oswalt, have all joined a growing list of celebrities speaking up for former Cosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens who was shamed on social media for working at a Trader Joe’s in New Jersey.

Today, following Owens’ appearance on Good Morning America, Bill Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt exclusively told NNPA Newswire that he and the comedian are both proud of Owens.

“There’s nothing wrong with working at Trader Joe’s and I commend him for taking care of his family,” said Wyatt, who noted Cosby was unavailable to comment because he’s continued to closely follow the terms of the court order that has him under house arrest.

Wyatt said Owens and other Cosby Show actors have been victimized by Hollywood studios which have elected to halt re-runs of the iconic show and all of Cosby’s works.

The result, Wyatt said, is actors like Owens are deprived of potentially lucrative residues cast and writers earn from syndicated shows.

“You take ‘The Cosby Show’ off the air, yet you leave ‘7th Heaven’ on the air and all of Harvey Weinstein’s movies are still playing whether it’s on Netflix or Hulu you can find them everywhere because you don’t want to hurt these Hollywood starlets and take away their money and residue pay, yet you take ‘The Cosby Show’ off the air,” Wyatt said.

While Cosby was convicted of aggravated indecent assault for an incident that he maintains was consensual, “7th Heaven” star Stephen Collins admitted to molesting at least three young girls and Weinstein has been charged

Sporting his Trader Joe’s badge, Owens appeared on Good Morning America on Tuesday, Sept. 4, one week after Fox News broadcast photos of him stocking shelves at the grocery store.

“I’ve had a great life. I’ve had a great career and I’ve had a career that most actors would die for,” he said.

1st Black Woman to Cover White House ’

Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor On Friday, Sept. 21, a new sculpture of Alice Allison Dunnigan, the first African American woman to receive press credentials to cover the White House and Congress, is scheduled to go on display at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. At the unveiling of the sculpture, featured guests are expected to tell the story of this pioneering journalist who rose to the top of her profession despite racist policies that segregated Black journalists and sexist attitudes that severely limited opportunities for women in the industry.

“Alice Dunnigan endured poverty, segregation and sexism and she fought to fulfill her dream of becoming a journalist,” designer Lauren Bohn wrote on Twitter.

“Alice’s story should give hope to anyone who has ever doubted his or her ability to make it through tough times or, much more painfully, his or her own worth,” said political analyst Jordyn Holman.

Denver, Colo., Mayor Michael B. Hancock said the tribute is long overdue.

“Alice Dunnigan was a barrier breaker for women and people of color to reach higher heights in journalism,” Hancock said.

Nike has touched off a furor by wading into football’s national anthem debate with an ad featuring Colin Kaepernick, the former 49ers quarterback who was the first athlete to kneel during “The Star-Spangled Banner” to protest police brutality against blacks and hasn’t played a game since 2016.

The ad copy reads: “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.”

The ad, part of Nike’s 30th anniversary “Just Do it” campaign, has outraged many. Online, people threatened boycotts and posted videos and photos of shoes set on fire, Nike gear thrown in the trash, and swoosh logos cut out of products.

Most big corporations steer clear of politics, and marketing experts disagreed Tuesday over whether the Kaepernick campaign is good business.

But some noted approvingly that it made a big splash and set Nike apart. And they said it could solidify Nike’s bond with athletes, especially black ones, an important consideration for a company that relies heavily on sports stars to endorse its products.

Brian Gordon, CEO of Engine Shop, a sports and entertainment marketing agency, said the ad is provocative but “authentic to who they are and the communities they represent and speak to,” including the athletes.

“Even in the face of potential backlash, they support their athlete partners, and that’s an incredibly powerful statement to the athlete community,” Gordon said.

Other athletes in the campaign include tennis star Serena Williams, New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Shaquem Griffin, a linebacker whose left hand was amputated when he was 4. But the Kaepernick ad struck a nerve, timed just before the NFL season kicks off on Thursday.

Nike did not return a request for comment about its strategy. Its stock closed down more than 3 percent Tuesday.

Neil Saunders, managing director of the data and analytics firm GlobalData, called the Kaepernick strategy “commercially imprudent.”

“Nike’s campaign will generate both attention and discussion which is, arguably, one of its central aims,” he said. “However, it is also a risky strategy in that it addresses,

and appears to take sides on, a highly politicized issue. This means it could ultimately alienate and lose customers, which is not the purpose of a marketing campaign.”

The university says Obama will speak at 11 a.m.

The university’s Institute of Government and Public Affairs will honor Obama with the Paul H. Douglas Award for Ethics in Government. A national selection committee chooses the recipient of the award.

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) - West Point is honoring Buffalo Soldiers.

The African-American Buffalo Soldiers are famous for their service in conflicts including the SpanishAmerican War and both world wars.

The U.S. Military Academy is hosting its 57th annual Buffalo Soldier Memorial Ceremony on Sunday.

The ceremony will honor the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments of the Buffalo Soldiers, who were assigned to West Point from the early 1900s until 1946. They supported riding instruction and mounted drills for cadets.

The ceremony is being held on Buffalo Soldier Field.

Busting Notorious Serial Killer, ‘Bad’ Henry Louis Wallace

By Kimberlee Buck Los Angeles Sentinel / NNPA Newswire During the 1990’s, Charlotte, North Carolina was hit with gang violence, racial tension, and to make matters worse, a crack epidemic. Unfortunately, the residents of Charlotte had no idea their entire city would be turned upside down due to killings of one of the country’s most notorious Black serial killers, “Bad” Henry Louis Wallace.

In late July, former detective Garry McFadden (star of Investigative Discovery’s “I Am Homicide”), the only African American on the squad at the time, revealed the story of “Bad Henry” on a two-hour special on Investigation Discovery (ID). Recently, McFadden spoke with the LA Sentinel to discuss more in-depth how he and his team brought justice to the city and apprehended a monstrous killer.

Over a period of two years, Bad Henry raped and strangled to death young Black women and is suspected in 90 murders across the country. This case was unique for many reasons; the first being that Bad Henry knew his victims. He preyed on co-workers, friends, and friends of his then girlfriend. The second thing that made this case so interesting was the fact that Bad Henry would attend the funerals of the victims’ families and give his condolences.

“We believe Henry Wallace is the first known African American serial killer and we believe that he is the only serial killer that knew all of his victims,” said McFadden.

During the course of his investigation, McFadden was faced with many obstacles. At one point the department was in the process of meeting about the case when Bad Henry struck again taking the life of another innocent woman.

“Our department handled 322 murders, so you take 322 murders and you drop nine of the murders in that cycle of 22 and you only have six to eight homicide detectives.

Within that three year period, we have about 1500, [non death related incidents] that families wanted us to investigate. In the middle of that we also had three officers to be shot and killed and we strangely enough had a very high clearance rate that was well above national average. All of that compiled into the nine murders that happened and everybody said, ‘why didn’t you see the connection’ and we

Wife’s Body Left to Rot GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) _ The husband of a South Carolina woman whose body authorities said was left inside a funeral home to rot for almost three years said he can't stop thinking about how poorly she was treated in death.

A grand jury indicted two men _ Lawrence Robert Meadows and Roderick Mitchell Cummings _ with desecration of human remains after prosecutors said they left Mary Alice Pitts Moore in unrefrigerated rooms under blankets and surrounded by air fresheners for nearly three years at First Family Funeral Home's locations first in Greenwood and later in Spartanburg.

Arrest warrants against the men said Fred Parker Jr. and his family owed them money for Moore's funeral, so they didn't cremate her remains and return them as requested.

But Parker told The Index-Journal of Greenwood that he talked to the people at First Family Funeral Home once after his wife's March 2015 death and never heard from them again after her body was prepared for a viewing for a Celebration of Life service.

“I never did get to see them no more, from day one to day two. All he did was take $1,100. My daughter said she

gave him $300 and I didn't know anything about this until this came up. He never did try to contact me or anything, no nothing,” Parker told the newspaper.

Meadows and Cummings, who are each 40, face from one to 10 years if convicted. Parks has also sued them in civil court, along with First Family Funeral Home and two other employees. The funeral home has lost its license, according to state records.

Meadows lost his personal funeral license in April 2015 in an unrelated fraud case and Cummins has never had a South Carolina funeral license, according to state records.

“We’re living one day at the time. I'll be glad when this is over,” Parks said. “I will be glad when it's all behind us.

We've been struggling ever since. Emotionally, I just ain't right in the head anymore.”

Parks said he is still dealing with the funeral home treating his late wife in a way that most people wouldn't treat a dog.

“I'm still toting her picture in my wallet. I had to stop looking at it. She was a good woman. That's all I can say,” he said. “Man, if I could get her back, oh Lord. That's my heart. That's my heart.”

Aside from the homicide department being understaffed and juggling many other investigations, the most daunting obstacle by far was trying to solve the case during a crack epidemic. This resulted in the police department receiving a high volume of missing person reports.

“Everybody was missing because they got on crack and they didn’t go to work and then they were later found in hotels. Preachers, pastors, police, doctors, lawyers… everybody was on crack,” said McFadden.

After the arrest of Bad Henry, the department caught a lot of heat from the community and the victims’ families.

This combined with McFadden being the only African American on the squad at the time was anything but easy. He recalls feeling attacked and being blamed for the murders.

“The communities of color, even though they want African American officers to help them, we are caught in the middle. We are caught between a community that looks like us, the community that we serve and the communities that don’t look like us,” said McFadden.

“In the middle of this, I tried to educate my community on what really happened but they ate me alive. Many years later, some of them [the residents] saw my point but we still have that problem in our community and that was

history by being the first African American woman on a presidential tour when she went on the whistle-stop tour with President Truman, according to the Newseum.

Throughout Dunnigan’s career, she battled the rampant racism and sexism that dominated the mostly white and male professions of journalism and politics.

She once famously stated, “Race and sex were twin strikes against me. I’m not sure which was the hardest to break down.”

In 2015, the Newseum hosted a program about Dunnigan, “Inside Media: Alice Dunnigan, Pioneer of the National Black Press.”

The program featured Carol McCabe Booker, who edited and annotated a new edition of Dunnigan’s autobiography, “Alone Atop the Hill.”

The sculpture will be on display at the Newseum through Dec. 16, 2018. It will then be taken to Dunnigan’s hometown of Russellville, Ky., and installed on the grounds of the West Kentucky African American Heritage Center as part of a park dedicated to the civil rights movement.

“At a time of growing racial divide courtesy of the Trump administration, this is a very welcomed development,” said journalist James Kosur.

“Alice Allison Dunnigan deserves this honor – she was a true pioneer in journalism for women and the African American community,” Kosur said.

After the murders of Brandi Henderson and Betty Baucom, investigators were able to link Bad Henry as a suspect once they found his palm print on the rear of Baucom’s car.

Nonetheless, McFadden believes that Bad Henry was the most monumental case of his career. During his time as a detective and working on numerous investigations, McFadden never saw such a ruthless psychopathic killer.

Stop Police Murders of Black Youth

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Civil Rights leaders and others reacted with a sense of relief – if only temporary – after a Texas jury sentenced a former police officer to 15 years in prison Wednesday for the shooting death of an unarmed African-American teen in a Dallas suburb.

“The child murdering cop just got 15 years in prison … he’ll likely serve all 15,” said activist Shaun King. “It doesn’t bring Jordan [Edwards] back, but it’s the closest thing to justice we’ve seen.”

A day earlier when the same jury found former Police Officer Roy Oliver guilty, King said it was an “answer to our prayers.”

“A bittersweet moment for his family and for all of us who’ve fought non-stop for justice,” King wrote on Twitter.

“We’d rather Jordan be alive, but this was so important.”

Journalist Jamil Smith noted a connection from Jordan to Emmett Till.

“I look at his face and see Emmett Till, lynched 63 years ago today. This story didn’t end in the typical fashion, though,” Smith said. “Oliver was convicted. I hate that this news is so surprising.”

The jury deliberated for 12 hours before deciding the fate of Oliver, the former Balch Springs, Texas officer. In addition to the prison term, it imposed a fine of $10,000.

Oliver was convicted of murder for the killing of Jordan Edwards, a 15-year-old high school freshman.

He fired into a car full of teens on April 29 last year, saying he believed it was moving aggressively toward his

partner.

Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson described Oliver as a “killer in blue” who violated his oath to protect citizens.

Prosecutors sought a sentence of at least 60 years while the defense argued for 20 years or less.

“The fact that Roy Oliver was even indicted for murder was already a small victory, but to be found guilty and convicted by a jury? These things don’t happen,” said Finessa Hudgens of Dallas. “So, although 15 years may not seem like much, this could be the start of something great,” Hudgens said.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, wrote in an email that the Oliver’s sentence “finally breaks the systematic problem of denying equal justice to the families and victims of racially-motivated police murders of Black persons across the United States.”

White police officers must be held accountable, said Chavis, a long-time civil rights activist and one-time head of the NAACP. “The prison sentence should have been at minimum a life sentence for this brutal murder of an innocent Black teenager,” he said.

“But today, at least police officers in America are put on notice: if you murder us, you will be punished and imprisoned. We must stop these racist police murders.”

Eddie “Chank” Willis, a member of the famed Motown session group known as “The Funk Brothers,” died at his home in Gore Springs, Mississippi.

The 82-year-old was part of a team of musicians who helped create some of the most memorable hits in music history.

“His guitar playing was heard worldwide on countless Motown Records classics, including the Marvelettes’ ‘Please Mr. Postman,’ and Stevie Wonder’s ‘I Was Made to Love Her,’ and ‘My Cherie Amour,’” the Recording Academy said in a statement.

With the Funk Brothers, Willis earned two Grammys at the 45th ceremony in 2003 – Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for ‘What’s Going On’ with Chaka Khan and Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media for “Standing in the Shadows of Motown.”

In 2004, the Funk Brothers’ incredible accomplishments were recognized with the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Willis played electric guitar and occasional electric sitar for the Funk Brothers during the 1960s and early 1970s.

According to the GoFundMe page, he’s known for his signature style of muted guitar riffs which added a

distinctive tone or “color” to the beat, often timed with the snare, of the hundreds of hit songs recorded at Hitsville U.S.A. for Motown artists.

Among other recordings Willis performed on are “The Way You Do the Things You Do” by The Temptations and “You Keep Me Hanging On” by The Supremes.

Influences for Willis include Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery, and Albert King. He played a Gibson Firebird guitar on most his early 1960s work, later moving on to use a Gibson ES-335. On recordings such as The Supremes’ “No Matter What Sign You Are,” Willis performed on a Coral sitar.

In his 2003 memoir Motown: The View from The Bottom, Willis’ fellow Funk Brother Jack Ashford wrote: “Joe Messina, Eddie Willis and Robert White always held down the guitar section. If all three were not on a session, two would definitely be there.

“How could three guitarists not get in each other’s way and still be effective? The producer would have the arrangements prepared but the three would organize their parts and play them so flawlessly it would be like they were smoothly fused together.” Willis will be remembered as a highly regarded session player who helped craft the signature Motown Sound. “One of the things everyone seems to be overlooking is that the Eagles’ album is a compilation of hits from 1971 to 1975 whereas ‘Thriller’ is one studio album with nine instant classics,” said Motown biographer and music aficionado Herb Livingston.

“It’s like saying, they put four or five albums together, got their sales numbers and compared it to one album and its sales. It’s not a fair comparison and that alone makes ‘Thriller’ still number one,” Livingston said.

The Recording Industry Association of America told The Associated Press that the Eagles’ album – “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” – is now certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of the album have reached 38 million copies.

The album was released in 1976 and, by those standards, pushes Jackson’s “Thriller,” which is 33x platinum, to second place.

The last time RIAA tallied sales for the Eagles’ greatest hits album was in 2006, when it said it was 29x platinum.

Sales and streams for “Thriller” were last updated last year, which could very well mean that it could leapfrog into the top spot again.

RIAA’s platinum status was once equivalent to selling one million albums or songs, but in 2013 the company began incorporating streaming from YouTube, Spotify and other digital music services to determine certification for

albums and songs.

Now, 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to an album sale. Also, 10 song downloads equals 1 album sale.

That also means Jackson’s “Thriller” should remain on solid footing even if its just recognized as the biggest selling studio album of all-time.

The RIAA compilation also only considers sales in the United States.

With smash hits like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” “Thriller” has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide and no single artist has come close to achieving such a feat. Jackson’s moniker as the King of Pop probably is earned in that many music lovers don’t even consider “Thriller” to be his best work.

His 1979, “Off the Wall,” is widely considered musical genius while his 1987 “Bad” sold more than 24 million copies.

Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, won 24 American Music Awards, 13 Grammy Awards and was twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – in 1997 as a member of the Jackson 5, and in 2001, as a solo artist.

“His fans – and there aren’t more loyal and dedicated fans in the world – will make sure to go on a downloading and buying frenzy,” Livingston said. “The ‘Thriller’ album will easily reclaim those tainted sales numbers and again shut up those who doubt.”

Aretha’s Lack of a Will Could Make Things Rocky for Heirs

By ANDREW DALTON AP Entertainment Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Aretha Franklin was so hardnosed in her business dealings that she demanded to be paid in cash before performing. Her heirs won't have it so simple.

Though she lived to 76 and was terminally ill with pancreatic cancer, the Queen of Soul died without a will.

As her four sons and other family members move on from Friday's funeral in Detroit, they're left with the potentially tall task of finding out how many millions she was worth, and divvying it up, a process that could take years and is likely to play out in public.

Estate law experts expressed surprise but not shock that a wealthy person like Franklin would put off making a will until it was too late. At least one of the singer's attorneys says he urged her repeatedly over the years to draft one.

“I tried to convince her that she should do not just a will but a trust while she was still alive,” says Don Wilson, a Los Angeles lawyer who worked on entertainment matters for Franklin for nearly 30 years. “She never told me, `No, I don't want to do one.' She understood the need. It just didn't seem to be something she got around to.”

Laura Zwicker, an attorney who specializes in estate

planning but is not affiliated with the Franklin estate, says she sees it happen all too often in her work.

“People don't like to face their own mortality,” Zwicker says. “I had a client who had a $70 million real estate portfolio who had had end-stage diabetes. He had plenty of conversations with me about estate planning but would not sign the documents.”

Papers filed in Michigan's Oakland County court last week by David J. Bennett, the lawyer who worked most closely with Franklin, lay out the few known basics: She was not married and left four sons, ages 48 to 63: Clarence Franklin, Edward Franklin, Kecalf Franklin and Ted White Jr. Clarence, Aretha's eldest, is incapacitated and is represented by a guardian. And a niece of hers has accepted the role of executor.

Under Michigan law, as in most states, the sons will equally divide their mother's assets in the absence of a will, and so far no signs of conflict have emerged among family members. Bennett did not respond to phone and email messages seeking comment.

Aretha Franklin's friend Ron Moten, a Michigan businessman, gave the four sons some guidance in his speech at Friday's funeral.

“Remember your family, and friends that have been

with you for years,” Moten told the men. “Because you are about to meet a lot of people who will now want to be your new best friend. You will also meet some people that will have the best investments in the world for you. My advice?

Go slow, be careful and be smart.”

The documents make no mention of the value of Franklin's estate. The figure almost certainly runs into the tens of millions, but there will probably be widely varying estimates as her attorneys seek to downplay her wealth for tax purposes and the IRS tries to maximize the amount for its own reasons.

Franklin maintained ownership of the songs she wrote and did well by them, Wilson says, though of her major hits, “Think” is the only one that's her own composition.

She also wrote some lesser hits, such as “Rock Steady.”

Though her records were played millions of times, she earned little in radio royalties from smashes like 1967's “Respect” because such payments go overwhelmingly to the song's author, not the performer. In the case of “Respect,” the royalties go to the estate of Otis Redding, even though the song owes nearly all its popularity to Franklin.

“I would imagine she probably felt she was entitled to more, but probably received more than a lot of artists from

the time, especially African-American artists,” Wilson says.

Among Franklin's more tangible assets are several pieces of property in the Detroit area that according to tax assessors' estimates are worth at least $2 million, with a market value that could easily be twice that.

Once the value is established _ a process that could take years _ the IRS will take any back taxes Franklin owed, then will tax her estate at 40 percent for any assets beyond $11.2 million.

Kenneth Abdo, an attorney who specializes in probate law and has worked on the estate of Prince, who also died without a will, says the IRS will conduct an audit of her holdings.

Wilson, her entertainment attorney, says she would not have wanted to see her finances publicly aired: “She was a private person.”

As for why some clients don't make out a will, Zwicker said some heirs, like Franklin's son Clarence, may need more than others, and that can be a difficult and touchy decision for a parent.

“One arrangement may be fitting for one child, where other people need more help,” Zwicker said. “To accept that and put it on paper can be hard for a parent.”

Star of Sci-fi Kin is Poised for Stardom

By Nsenga K. Burton Ph.D. Myles Truitt is poised for stardom with the release of his latest project, Kin, opening in theaters Labor Day weekend. Even if you don’t know his name yet, you will soon. The Atlanta, GA teen has starred in a number of highprofile television shows including Queen Sugar, Greenleaf, Black Lightning and his critically-acclaimed performance in the episode of FX’s monster hit Atlanta where he played Devin, a bullied teenager who commits suicide. Truitt also starred in the record-breaking BET biopic ‘The New Edition Story,’ as a young Ronnie DeVoe. The biopic drew record ratings for BET, giving us a glimpse of Truitt’s acting chops.

In Kin, Truitt plays the role of Eli, a young, boy adopted by a white family forced to go on the run when his brother gets into trouble with the wrong folks. Along the way he finds a mystifying weapon to use as protection in their quest for safety and survival. Truitt holds his own playing against acclaimed actors Dennis Quaid, James Franco, Jack Reynor and Zoe Kravitz. The film is gritty and futuristic, the opposite of the young man sitting in front of me who describes his style as casual. Truitt is well-coifed, well-mannered and quiet in demeanor yet confident in presentation. He admits he kind of fell into acting when all of the basketball slots at the summer camp were sold out. He was given a choice by his parents of staying home with his grandmother or going to theater camp. He chose theater camp and the rest is history. “I learned how to talk to people, how to not be scared and how to carry myself on stage. That eventually helped me when I got in front of the camera,” says the 16-year-old. Once Truitt was bitten by the acting bug, he further developed his craft at the acting company Atlanta Youth Ensemble, where he studied his craft and began auditioning for roles, landing parts on celebrated shows.

Truitt has worked steadily over the last five years in television and is now starring in a major, Hollywood motion-picture where he is the star of the movie. It is rare in Hollywood films for a black person, let alone a black teenager to be the center of a narrative, so Truitt is breaking new ground in an industry that is often criticized for excluding people of color from central roles in major films. The weight of playing this role as a young, black man has not escaped Truitt, who has mixed emotions about landing this opportunity. “I really don’t know how I’m feeling. I’m happy and excited, but I don’t know how to communicate exactly what I’m feeling at this moment, says the thoughtful teenager. “I’m interested in seeing

I know that it will be a big moment and stepping stone for me in my life.”

“Work” is what Truitt does in this film -- shooting action sequences, performing poignant and intimate scenes with Quaid, Reynor and Kravitz and literally moving the narrative forward with each decision his character makes.

One would think a teenager in his first major motion picture, working with an elite group of actors would be intimidated by all that is happening around him. Truitt isn’t intimidated or star struck. He knows he belongs here and his co-stars who fans worship are human beings just like him. He credits his grandfather with teaching him to treat everyone as a friend. “My grandfather was an old soul and he treated everyone in a very respectable manner. It didn’t matter who you were. I learned that from him,” says

Truitt. The teen actor also learned to treat everyone the same. “I hung out with James Franco who is a huge actor.

Most people would be afraid to talk to him, but I wasn’t. I treated him like I treat everyone. Like a friend. He treated me the same.” The bonds that were formed during filming are on display throughout the film.

Truitt talks about connecting with the script, the actors and the story. It was Truitt’s connection with Kin’s director Jonathan Baker and the short film “Bagman” upon which the film is based that excited him about the film. “I saw a lot of myself in the character – he’s strong, independent and a rebel – and I wanted to play that role.”

When it came to working with Reynor, Truitt sees him as a big brother just as he is on the big screen. “When it comes to my relationship with Jack, we don’t see color. He doesn’t see black. I don’t see white. We see each other,” says the reflective teen. “When it comes to society, I think we could learn to be brothers and to be together, even if it’s not blood,” he adds. “I define brother as the connection that you have with each other. “My guess is that the audience that is reacting so badly to this aren’t buying a lot of Nikes anyway,” he said. “They’ll move on to the next thing. Welcome to the 21st century.”

Brands run the risk of a backlash in taking a political stand in their advertising.

Starbucks was mocked in 2015 for trying to start a discussion about race by writing the slogan “Race Together” on its cups. Pepsi ended up pulling a commercial that showed Kendall Jenner giving a Pepsi to a police officer; some said the ad trivialized the “Black Lives Matter” protests.

John Sweeney, sports communication professor at the University of North Carolina, said the Kaepernick ad was created to provoke people, and in that respect, it succeeded.

“You may have a negative reaction or a positive reaction, but you have a reaction,” he said. “They wanted something that would stop the presses and stop people in their places.”

For some, the ad has made them bigger fans of the brand.

“I think what Nike did was a tremendous step in fighting against the people who misunderstand the protests

“I don’t mind them protesting brutality,” he said. “I just wish they wouldn’t do it during the anthem.”

Though the Trojans got the win today, this game will certainly give the Clay Helton and the USC coaching staff something to talk to their players about as they prepare for the always competitive Stanford Cardinals next week. In the words of the Athletic Coordinator Lynn Swann, “There is room for improvement!”

After the game on the podium, USC Head Coach Clay Helton mentioned that “they could’ve played better.”

He also noted that he, “thought his young people played well!” Specifically referencing JT and St. Brown. He also noted that they needed to “makes our plays” and credited his QB “for giving his receivers an opportunity to make plays.” This was in reference to, the many passes their receivers dropped throughout the day.

Clearly, the Trojan student section was primed and ready to be heard, while being in the heads of the UNLV Players in their first game of the season. Just as it was for the USC players and coaching staff. I am confident the Trojans brass will get their team ready for their tough matchup this week. By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com On the first Saturday in September, the University of Southern California kick off their 2018 season by welcoming the UNLV Running Rebels into the Coliseum.

Before the teams took the field, the 58,000 fans in attendance collaborated on a heartfelt rendition of the StarSpangled Banner, as the instrumental track played over the loudspeaker. This opening game of the season signifies an opportunity for this young breed of players to make their mark in Trojans history.

Because this is the first game of the season for both teams, each team struggled to gain their rhythm initially.

The fumble on the first play of the game by the Rebels and the Daniels missing on his first 3 passes was evidence of this. The Trojans shanking a punt after going three and out on their second possession of the game was even further evidence.

UNLV would have to capitalize on the Trojan mistakes, to have a serious chance to win this game. In the first half, they did just that. After a fake punt early in the second quarter, Kendal Keys caught a 31 yards TD pass from Rebels QB Armani Rodgers, formerly of Hamilton High School, to take a 14- 9 lead over the Trojans.

The Trojans did come back to take a 19- 14 lead over the Rebels, on the legs of a 40 yards Stephen Carr run that lead to a V Malepeai 2-yard touchdown run. Both teams came out with a heavy resolve to not give any ground after halftime. As they both played a game of field position in the third quarter.

JT Daniels finally shook the rust off by hitting AmonRa St. Brown for a 43-yard touchdown pass. This was their sixth connection of the day and the first TD connection of their college careers. This certainly seems to be a

Heading into Week

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com Labor Day in America signifies the end of summer for most of the country. As kids also return to school, about this same time networks will begin their new episodes for the season and most importantly to a football fan like myself, all this means football season is here. Training Camps have concluded around the league rosters have been paired down and teams are making their final preparations for the season to begin.

Though we did this last month enough things have changed, around the league in recent weeks, to warrant a recap of my Top Storylines going into this season. Whether it’s from the trades, injuries or free agent signings this article I will present my, updated list of the Top 10 storylines for this upcoming NFL season, which I plan to follow up on intently; 10) Have we seen the last of Dez Bryant? As of now, this former 1st round draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys and 3-time Pro Bowl is a free agent, after being cut in April of this year. There’s no doubt Bryant can still be a productive receiver in the league, though it appears his reputation may be preceding him causing teams to shy away from him.

9) As he entered the NFL, most of any concerns were due to his potential off the field behavior. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2015 1st overall draft pick Jameis Winston reached the Pro Bowl in his initial season, the Buccaneers have yet to reach the playoff under his leadership and the Buccaneers brass fears were realized once Winston was recently suspended for 3 games for violating the league personal conduct policy. How they do without Jameis, will likely tell us if he worth the headache in Tamp Bay. 8) 2007 was the last time the New England Patriots dazzled their competition with great receivers. Though they do a great job in finding a certain type of receiver to excel in their lineup, the return of Julian Edelman was certainly someone they were looking to have back in their lineup.

However, Edelman will be serving a 4-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy during his rehabilitation.

7) Adrian Peterson is back! The Washington football team has invited him into training camp due to the 2 injuries they suffered to their young backfield. Was AP given a raw deal in New Orleans last season; was Arizona a good spot for him last season; or does he have anything left in the tank? These are among the questions circling around the Adrian Peterson signing for the Washington football team.

6) Each year we enjoy seeing which rookie acclimate themselves best in the NFL. A few of the rookies we will be keeping a keen eye on early is; - #2 draft pick Penn State Running Back Saquon Barkley will be filling a void the Giants will have for many years now. It will be exciting to see how Barkley compliments Eli Manning and meshes with Odell Beckham Jr...

- The Arizona Cardinals drafted former UCLA Bruin Josh Rosen to be their franchise quarterback. Rosen will have a lot of talent around him and be given every opportunity to succeed in this very tough division. It will be interesting to see how far he can lead the Arizona Cardinals this season.

- With the 11th pick of the NFL draft, The Miami Dolphins drafted 6’0” 204 lbs. Alabama Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to pair him with current Safety Rashad Jones.

This pick is expected to have an immediate impact by bringing awareness and toughness to the previously porous defense.

5) Earlier this year at the owner’s meetings the NFL owners have implemented new rules for this upcoming season. A few rule changes of note are; - A 15-yard penalty for lowering head to initiate, make contact with helmet…? This rule is so vague that this is sure to cause confusion among offensive and defensive players

alike. Because this happens on nearly every play, it will be interesting to see how this rule will this be enforced. Or to what level will the officials will try to emphasize this rule.

- There’s a revised standard for a catch. Gone is the “survive the ground” requirement. Now a receiver must control the ball, establish himself in bounds and perform a football move - such as a third step or a lunge to make a catch legal. So many of those catches we knew to be a catch then, would now be a catch. A few of those controversial ‘non-catches’ that would be a catch this season are the 2010 Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson reversed TD play, the Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant 2014 catch called no catch, Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Jesse James reversed TD catch late in the 2017 season.

- The NFL has granted permission for the command center to eject players. Player ejections can now be ordered

by Senior Vice President of Officiating Al Riveron of a player who has been penalized for a non-football act such as punching or fighting. Via his wireless microphone connection with referees Riveron will have the option to step in and demand an ejection on questions plays or cheap shots.

4) It’s not often that we’ve seen productive playoff quarterbacks switch teams simultaneously. Cousins, Keenum and Alex Smith were among the free agent quarterbacks to switch teams this offseason. Kirk Cousins joining the Minnesota Vikings will be just as interesting as Case Keenum joining the Denver Broncos or Alex Smith joining the Washington football team. There’s doubt that Kirk is walking into the best situation and yet the toughest situation because it’s Superbowl or bust for the Vikings seeing as how they made the NFC Championship last season.

3) Once the Rams made Donald the richest defensive player in the league, the Raiders were the only team left with a holdout from Training Camp. Though the Raiders came up with $100 million dollars to sign John Gruden as their Head Coach, for whatever reason they decided to trade one of the leagues best defenders in the league for a couple 1st round draft picks. Though the Bears get one heck of a football player in Khalil Mack, as he is the only player in history to be named All-Pro in two different positions in the same season, the Raiders should be ashamed of themselves for not signing their best player on the team.

2) The health of Andrew Luck remains a major concern for the Indianapolis Colts. Having sat out, all of last season, the Colts brass, and the NFL fans are waiting to see if Luck is healthy enough to reclaim his position as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and lead the Colts back to the playoffs. He did get a chance to work out the kinks during Pre-Season, it will be very interesting to see how he comes out in Week 1.

1) Now that the Los Angeles Rams have signed Aaron Donald, to the richest contract at the time, they have seemingly pushed all their chips to the center of the table.

With their recent Free Agent additions of Ndamukong Suh, Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, the Los Angeles Rams have to be one of the league favorites going and the biggest storyline of the NFL offseason. After winning the NFC West last season, they add 3 Pro Bowlers to this already potent team… they have to be playing with legitimate Superbowl aspirations.

Now that training camps have wrapped around the league, teams have narrowed down their team to get under the 53-man roster limitations. Teams will now be reviewing game plans for the upcoming week.

Storylines will surely arise through the season, though these are the storylines I will watch. Grier and Notre Dame’s Kareem Land Walter Camp Awards

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer Will Grier and Khalid Kareem were named Walter Camp Players of the week for the first week of College football.

Grier a senior led West Virginia to a 40-14 win over Tennessee of the SEC in their first-ever meeting, completing 73.5 percent of his passes (25-of-34) for a career-high 429 yards and tied his career best with five touchdown passes.

The Charlotte, North Carolina native completed passes to 11 different Mountaineer receivers.

On the Defensive side Notre Dame junior DE Khalid Kareem recorded nine tackles (7 solo), including 2.5 for losses, and two quarterback sacks as 12th-ranked Notre Dame defeated 14th-ranked Michigan, 24-17. The Detroit native Kareem added one quarterback hurry to lead a Fighting Irish defensive unit.

“The defense was dialed in all day,” said Kareem.

“There was a lot of intensity out there.”

Bridge the Black Dating Divide

Clear, Candid and sometimes Comical Communication Creating Couples and Community

By Kimberlee Buck, Staff Writer Los Angeles Sentinel “Nearly seven out of ten Black women are unmarried at any given time, and as many as three out of ten will never marry,” said KeepingIt100 CFO, Lynn Beatty.

“Marriage has also declined among Black men, fewer than half of whom are husbands. African Americans have the lowest rate of getting married and the highest rate of getting a divorce. So, when you look at those two opposing statistics, that means there’s not a lot of Black marriages that are surviving.

Recently, the Los Angeles Sentinel discussed Black marriage statistics with KeepingIt100 founder Kerry Neal and the organizations CFO Beatty, about what the

According to Neal, KeepingIt100 is “a social event where men and women come together to respond honestly to randomly selected, pre-scripted, open-ended questions regarding relationship dynamics. KeepingIt100 is a social change movement focused on debunking and demystifying relationship dynamics between men and women in an effort to bridge a healthier understanding between the sexes,” he said.

Keeping It100 was created by Black men and women for Black men and women. The non-profit organization prides itself in providing a safe space for Black men and women to have honest and open communication about some of the generational myths each gender has about the other.

The inception of Keeping It100, began after a singles ministry at Neal’s church ended.

“You had this group of unmarried singles who were looking for activities that would help to stimulate their singles experience, but obviously one of the things that was a driver was for them to meet their future spouse,” said Neal.

The same group started coming together to discuss the

single life and the challenges they faced with the opposite sex and which gender was doing something wrong when it came to dating. During these conversations, which usually lead to heated debates, Neal began to notice a reoccurring theme of both men and women making unhealthy assumptions about one another. This lead to Neal creating a game called KeepingIt100. The game is designed to generate a space to debunk dating myths.

After Neal moderated several games, he decided to make KeepingIt100 a non-profit organization.

KeepingIt100 was originally established in the Inland Empire eight years ago and has been in the city of Los Angeles for four years. Currently, the organization has resulted in two marriages, three engagements, and hundreds of dates.

“We’ve had several marriages and exclusive relationships credited to us from hosting these events, which is really reflective of our ultimate goal. When we have stronger Black relationships, we have stronger Black communities,” said Neal.

How does it work? The organization holds moderated dialogues quarterly at special events. Each event has special guest speakers, like psychologists, matchmakers, and other experts to express their insight during the discussion.

During the event, questions are posed to mixed audience of married couples and single attendees. At the end of each event, eventgoers are encouraged to stay for the “after party” where attendees can continue conversations about the topics discussed, dance, listen to music and of course, mingle.

“We realized, that in order to give some meat to what we are trying to accomplish, we need to bring in some professionals,” said KeepingIt100 co-lead moderator, Lynn Beatty.

“There are a number of well-educated Black professionals with the scientific information, the data, and the experience around Black relationships that will lend that level of expertise to the conversation. There is a lot of opinion out there what we needed was for professionals to come out and be informants and give us real information so that we weren’t always kind of working off our emotion.”

Aside from the regularly scheduled special events, KeepingIt100 provides masterclasses on dating. On September 15 and 29 attendees will learn: • how-to-date in the 21st century • the online dating do’s and don’ts • when to expect being exclusive and engaged • Break-ups and divorces: when to start dating again • How to show interest without seeming desperate • Dating outside of your race • Dating and emotional readiness • Social media and dating • Single parent dating • What is dating?

The event will be led by author, life coach, and spiritual advisor, Donald Bell at the Playa Vista Public Library from 10am-1pm.
