African Americans Urged to Consider Clinical Trials (Black PR Wire) Washington – An initiative launched today encourages newly-diagnosed African American cancer patients in Maryland to consider clinical trials as the firstline option, not the last resort. The effort is spearheaded

by Advancing Cancer Treatment (ACT), a philanthropic initiative that supports patients' access to the best in modern cancer treatments.

“Too few African American cancer patients participate in clinical trials, which slows down the progress of science and misses opportunities for patients to receive cuttingedge treatment,” said Dr. Nancy Dawson, founder and first president of a consortium of volunteer oncologists working to promote clinical trials called Genito-Urinary Multidisciplinary DC Regional Oncology Project or GUMDROP. While African Americans suffer disproportionately from certain cancers, they are underrepresented in clinical trials.

Overall, less than 5 percent of cancer patients participate in clinical trials. For patients who don’t participate in trials, 80 percent say it’s because their doctors didn’t tell them the option exists.

Cynthia Heath, 56, of Bowie, MD., is urging other African American patients to participate in clinical trials.

Diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer, Heath credits clinical trials with extending her life when doctors initially told her she had a year to live.

“Clinical trials are helping more patients survive and experience improved quality of life for many types of cancer,” said Dr. Adam Metwalli, president of GUMDROP and Chief, Division of Urology, Department of Surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington.

Improve SCD Care

With National Sickle Cell Awareness Month just next month, I’ve been thinking a lot about the challenges that people with sickle cell disease (SCD) face and what can be done to make a meaningful change in their care.

Evolution of the science behind SCD has advanced in recent years, resulting in a new understanding of the disease.

However, this knowledge is not commonplace among individuals living with SCD and their healthcare professionals. The CFC, a group convened by Pfizer and inclusive of more than 20 experts, advocates, and patients working to improve care for SCD patients, is looking at this issue as part of a recently released report called “Improving Vaso-occlusive Crisis (VOC) Management.” In the report, the CFC explains how the understanding of SCD has evolved through the years, and outlines recommendations for how to get this information into the hands of those who can use it—healthcare professionals, emergency department staff, and people living with SCD—to make a positive change and improve patient care.

Here is an overview of what the CFC found, which is outlined in the report: The Expanded Science Behind the Disease Let’s start at the beginning. A common (and somewhat outdated) view of SCD is that complications from the disease are caused by a simple “plumbing malfunction.” In other words, it is only the sickled red blood cells that clump together and cause blockages in blood vessels that lead to pain and organ damage.

Now it has been understood that the underlying science is more complex than this.

Recent breakthroughs in the understanding of SCD have

shown in fact that the vaso-occlusion (or blocking of minute blood vessels involving multiple pathways and different types of blood cells), is a key factor underlying all of the different manifestations of the disease.

In SCD, these rigid, crescent-shaped cells have difficulty passing through small blood vessels and irritate the internal lining of these vessels. This causes the lining of blood vessels to become “sticky,” and as a result, not only the red blood cells, but also white blood cells and platelets clump together. This can further contribute to obstructions in blood flow and inflammation.

These events can occur even when there are no outward signs or symptoms, ultimately causing several of the complications seen with SCD. Other factors that contribute to vaso-occlusion may include stress, the thickness of a person’s blood, as well as infection or conditions that commonly trigger a painful crisis.

The most common symptom of vaso-occlusion is the pain crises (or vaso-occlusive crisis – VOC). VOC is the cardinal manifestation of SCD and is often thought of synonymously with SCD. In addition, there is an increasing awareness of another SCD complication—one that is often overlooked: chronic pain.

VOCs are sudden, intense episodes of pain, while chronic pain, especially for older adolescents and adults, is defined as ongoing pain that has been regularly present over a period of the past six months.

What makes it more complicated? People with SCD can experience VOCs while also suffering from chronic pain. And while VOCs are routinely treated with opioid medications, chronic pain should be managed separately and with a different approach. Ongoing, long-term use of opioids can lead to drug tolerance, which causes people with SCD to require higher doses.

However, according to the report, considering alternative pain relief options when appropriate, along with regular reassessment of medication use and dose, may be helpful in minimizing this issue.

Getting the Word Out It is great news that the understanding of the science of SCD has evolved, but it is important to make sure that the right people, especially patients and their doctors, are aware that SCD is far more complex than being just a disease of red blood cells in order to make a meaningful difference.

Armed with this information, individuals living with SCD and their healthcare professionals better understand and explain the varied symptoms an individual can have. They can make more informed treatment decisions for their SCD patients, and people with SCD can be empowered to advocate for better care. Additionally, this new understanding of SCD among both healthcare professionals and patients can lead to better communication and more positive interactions in the future.

‘Black-ish’ Creator Sets Netflix Deal

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Netflix says it’s signed “black-ish” creator Kenya Barris to an exclusive production agreement.

The multi-year deal announced Thursday makes Barris the latest prominent TV creator to jump from broadcast and cable to the streaming platform.

Barris’ Peabody-winning “black-ish” aired on ABC, and he produced the spinoff “grown-ish” for the network’s Disney Co. sibling, Freeform.

He ended his ABC Studios contract early after ABC declined to air a “black-ish” episode that reportedly addressed issues including the NFL player protests.

Among other producers who have made Netflix deals: Shonda Rhimes, creator of ABC hits “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” and Ryan Murphy of FX series including “American Horror Story.”

In a statement, Barris joked that he’d decided to take a chance on Netflix despite it being what he called a “mom-andpop shop.”

Rapper Young Thug booked on Weapons Charge

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Rapper Young Thug was arrested in Los Angeles after officers found a concealed firearm inside his car, authorities said Friday.

The rapper, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, was booked on a weapons possession charge just after midnight Friday, said Officer Drake Madison. He was being held on $35,000 bail.

Madison said several hundred people had gathered outside a Dave & Buster’s sports bar in the city’s Hollywood area, where the rapper was hosting an event for his new album, “Slime Language.”

Officers detained several in the crowd, including Williams, and officers found a firearm inside his car, Madison said. Police provided no other details.

Williams was arrested in September 2017 on drug and gun charges after a traffic stop near Atlanta.

Brian Steel, an attorney who represented him in that case, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Friday.

NoCal Sheriff’s Office Illegally Recorded Suspect

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – A district attorney in Northern California has thrown out a case against a juvenile crime suspect after it was revealed the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office recorded at least one confidential conversation between him and his attorney.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the Alameda County district attorney’s office is also reviewing every juvenile criminal case submitted by the sheriff’s office this year.

The illegal recording claims were made by the county public defender’s office in a motion filed Monday in Alameda County Superior Court and appear to be supported by a bodycamera video obtained by the newspaper.

In the video, a sheriff’s sergeant says several conversations between suspects and their attorneys have been recorded but no one has listened to them.

The Sheriff’s Office says it has opened an internal investigation.

Cajon Pass Freight Train Derails

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) – A freight train has derailed near Southern California’s Cajon Pass.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department tweets that 13 tank cars containing an unknown material went off the tracks Tuesday morning and at least two are leaking.

The department says surrounding buildings are being evacuated as a precaution, along with transients in an adjacent riverbed.

The location is near the northwest corner of the city of San Bernardino at the foot of the southern side of Cajon Pass, which carries rail and highway traffic over mountains about 60 miles (96 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

Unique Health Needs of African Americans

ORLANDO, Fla.- African Americans express more motivation to pursue a healthier lifestyle than non-African Americans, yet are less likely to describe themselves as being in good health, according to recent findings from the African American Health Engagement Study (AAHES), a collaboration of Pfizer, the National Medical Association (NMA) and the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). The AAHES study examines the health attitudes and behaviors of African Americans and reveals important health-related cultural differences

compared to other non-African American respondent groups.

Areas of focus in the study include spiritual health relative to other dimensions of health; awareness of and attitudes towards clinical trial participation; perception of state of health; and level of motivation to take action on health.

The AAHES research, which commenced in 2017, is designed to garner insights that could inform meaningful and effective actions to increase health equity in African American communities. According to recent data from the Centers for

CA-Backed Pot Bank Bill Stalls SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California lawmakers killed a plan Thursday to create a state-backed banking system for the recreational marijuana market, meaning the industry must keep operating in cash for now.

Most banks refuse to do business with marijuana growers, distributors and sellers because the drug is still illegal under federal law.

Democratic Sen. Bob Hertzberg, who suggested the creation of the state-backed bank, said forcing operators to deal in large sums of cash can be dangerous.

Hertzberg said he was surprised to see his plan held up Thursday in an Assembly committee, effectively stopping it for the year. The committee did not debate the proposal.

California state Treasurer John Chiang has launched two studies on the feasibility of California operating a state-backed marijuana bank. Meanwhile, a proposal in Congress would explicitly say that marijuana proceeds wouldn't be considered illegal in states where the drug has been legalized.

Hertzberg's bill would have allowed the state to license and regulate “cannabis limited” charter banks and credit unions to deal with marijuana businesses. The banks would have provided limited services, such as accepting deposits and issuing checks for specified uses like paying state and local taxes.

The bill didn't guarantee that such banks would be shielded from federal law.

The California Cannabis Industry Association called the Legislature's move “disappointing.”

“We committed to partnering with the Legislature to identify solutions to addressing this very critical issue to our state

and our industry,” spokesman Josh Drayton said in a statement.

Tax proceeds from marijuana have been sluggish in California since the start of the year, with the black market still dominating much of the purchasing and selling of marijuana.

The state's legal recreational pot market launched Jan. 1.

Disease Control, African Americans face a greater risk of death at almost every stage of life compared with other American racial and ethnic groups, and African Americans overall have a life expectancy more than three years shorter than that of nonAfrican Americans.

“Our mission is to ensure access to the highest quality of healthcare for persons of color,” said Eric J. Williams, DNP, RN, CNE, FAAN, President, National Black Nurses Association.

“Our participation in the study helps us better understand health attitudes and behaviors of African Americans. Through our partnership with Pfizer and the National Medical Association, we are working to develop a sustainable plan of action that will make an impact on critical disparities that affect the health of our community.”

Key findings of the AAHES study include: 84% of African American study participants described themselves as “highly motivated to improve overall health,” compared with 76% of non-African American participants.

Moreover, 75% of African American respondents claimed to be taking some action to stay healthy, compared to only 52% of non-African American respondents.

67% of African Americans surveyed agreed with the statement “I will do better on my health tomorrow,” compared with 53% of non-African Americans surveyed.

36% of all African American study participants ranked their overall health (including physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual health) as “very good” or “excellent,” compared to 43% of study participants in other groups.

79% of African American study participants viewed spiritual health as extremely or very important to overall health and wellness, compared to 59% of non-African American participants.45% of African Americans reported being satisfied with their body regardless of weight, compared to 36% of respondents in other groups.

87% of African American participants believe African Americans are not well-represented in clinical trials, but only 33% of African American women and 41% of African American men stated that they are willing to enroll in a trial if it means changing or starting medication.

When it comes to trusted sources of health and medical information, African American respondents said that they place their highest level of trust in medical organizations focused on African Americans. African Americans’ least trusted sources for health related information are widely used media channels, such as cable news and commercial broadcast networks.

The death rates for African American women from heart disease and breast cancer are far greater than that of other women in America (CDC Health, United States 2016 Report). African American men of all ages experience higher mortality than men of other races and ethnicities and have significantly higher rates of malignancies such as prostate cancer (CDC Health, United States 2016 Report).

“We see our partnership with the National Black Nurses Association and the National Medical Association as a critical way to increase trust and communication and better meet the health needs of African Americans,” said Freda Lewis-Hall, M.D., Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President, Pfizer.

“Certain medical conditions are more prevalent and devastating for African Americans and other populations of color; diversity in clinical trials is one critical approach to closing disparity gaps.

African Americans account for 12 percent of the U.S. population but make up only five percent of clinical trial participants.

When it comes to increasing African American participation in clinical trials, we cannot overstate the importance of trust and collaboration.”

Beyond clinical trial awareness and recruiting, the AAHES provides insight into other areas where the organizations can work together to increase health equity , including increasing the capacity of African American health care provider organizations; facilitating more effective health-seeking behaviors in African Americans through health education and community initiatives; and defining and launching targeted initiatives to respond to

specific health care needs in African American communities.

About the African American Health Engagement Study (AAHES) The African American Health Engagement Study (AAHES) commenced in January 2017 with 18 focus groups conducted by the Hunter-Miller Group with African American community members in Chicago, Houston and Philadelphia, followed by a nationwide quantitative questionnaire fielded in March and April of 2017 by the research firm Burke, Inc., with more than 2,000 participants (more than 1,000 in each group, African American and non-African American, with robust representation across age, gender, income and ethnicity groups in each cohort). Burke’s proprietary algorithm was used to validate responses.

At the time the questionnaire was fielded, 91% of African American respondents and 93% of non-African American respondents reported having health insurance coverage.

DNC Gives Pennsylvania Democratic Party $175K Grant

Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Only 40 percent of the voting eligible population voted in the 2016 election and with midterm turnouts historically low, the Democratic National Committee has swung into action providing grants to 41 states and territories to help prevent voter suppression and other Republican-based strategies ahead of the crucial election.

In its latest bid to win control of the House and Senate, the DNC has awarded a $175,000 grant to the Pennsylvania Democratic Party.

The grant is specifically designed to help with base community organizing ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, party officials said in a statement.

Combining traditional boots-on-the-ground organizing with innovative digital and technological tools, these investments will support the DNC’s “IWillVote” initiative, which aims to reach 50 million voters by Election Day, party officials said.

The new investment in Pennsylvania is in addition to the $100,000 already awarded to the Keystone State’s Democratic Party through the State Party Innovation Fund.

Further, DNC officials said the latest round of investment includes $1.2 million for organizing in African American, Latinx, AAPI, millennial, and rural communities that will help fund over 50 organizers in 16 states, including Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, New Mexico, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, West Virginia, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Maine, California, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Each state party is receiving funding to hire African American, Latinx, AAPI, rural or millennial organizers, who will be hired by early summer and be part of the coordinated campaign through the end of the election cycle.

“The new DNC has been working tirelessly to support our state parties, motivate voters to get to the polls, and organize around issues that matter for country’s future,” said DNC Chair Tom Perez.

“We are investing in our base communities and putting organizers on the ground across the country because we know that’s the only way we’ll win,” he said.

In total, the DNC has awarded 41 states and territories with grants through the State Party Innovation Fund.

That is in addition to the $10,000-a-month investment that state parties receive through its “Every ZIP Code Counts” program.

“This investment will help ensure that Democrats are talking to voters in every community, and make sure that activists and candidates have the new tools and resources they need to succeed,” Perez said.

“The DNC is proud to partner with our state parties to expand our engagement in all communities and support Democratic candidates running up and down the ticket.”

Recently, the DNC announced a multimillion-dollar investment, which includes a nationwide cell-phone acquisition, a complete overhaul of the party’s data for voter-registration targeting and further data investments for the party’s voterprotection efforts.

As part of the DNC’s “IWillVote” program, the DNC plans to launch a six-figure digital ad buy across the country to encourage Americans -- with a focus on sporadic voters, especially those who​dropped off in 2014 from 2012 -- to commit to vote this November.

“We are thrilled that the DNC is investing in Pennsylvania.

We need to ensure that people of color continue to have a voice and play a role in the direction of our Party,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party Executive Director Sinceré Harris.

“That’s why we are happy to partner with the DNC to reach out to and organize in communities of color from Erie to Hazleton, Philadelphia to Reading, and places in between.

Chairman Perez and Chairwoman Mills are committed to engaging these ever-important communities to ensure that we elect Democrats up and down the ballot,” Harris said.

Condemned Man Seeks Special DNA Investigation

Cooper is awaiting execution for the 1983 Chino Hills hatchet and knife killings of four people. He escaped from a nearby minimum-security prison east of Los Angeles two days before the slayings of Doug and Peggy Ryen, their 10-year-old daughter Jessica and 11-year-old neighbor Christopher Hughes.

California's former attorney general and now U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris and New York Times' columnist Nicholas Kristof are among those calling for new DNA testing.

“Nothing could be more important to the integrity of our justice system than ensuring that an innocent person is not executed,” Cooper's attorney, Norman Hile, wrote.

The 45-page letter he sent to Brown on Friday asks for “a broader innocence investigation to be overseen by a special master appointed by the governor.”

The filing came in response to the governor's request last

month for more details in Cooper's clemency petition. The governor's office said Friday the response was being reviewed.

San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos did not immediately respond Friday. Ramos has opposed additional testing and says Cooper, now 60, is indisputably guilty.

Brown was asked to order new DNA testing that Hile says would be five to six times more sensitive than the tests on evidence that implicated Cooper in 2002 and 2004.

It also claims that two witnesses recently came forward with details of separate confessions by the real killers. Hile wouldn't provide their names or declarations “due to considerations for their personal safety.”

Hile says he also has obtained a DNA sample from a man they say was the real killer to be compared to the new DNA samples they want Brown to order as part of his clemency consideration.

Diversity-Focused Academy Program Boosts Hollywood Dreamers

By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) _ The diversity crisis in Hollywood may rage on, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues to try to open up access to the entertainment business for people from underrepresented communities and give some a foot in the door at the most critical moment _ when college graduation is in sight and the job market is looming.

For seven weeks this summer, 107 college students from across the nation convened in Los Angeles for internships at places like HBO, Warner Bros., Dolby Laboratories, Universal Pictures, IMAX and AMC Networks, in addition to film screenings and weekly panels on various aspects of the film industry from people at the top of their fields.

Notable speakers this summer included cinematographer Janusz Kaminski ("Schindler's List”), production designer K.K. Barrett ("Her”), “Sorry to Bother You” director Boots Riley and actress Lily Collins, who dished on the casting process.

Cinematography and production design students even got to work with Daryn Okada, an academy governor, to recreate a scene from “Mean Girls,” which Okada shot.

The program, now in its second year, continues to evolve.

In addition to giving spots to over 30 additional students, this year Academy Gold added a Production Track program for students interested in cinematography, production design, postproduction and film editing.

The statistics remain dire in the entertainment business job market for anyone who isn't a white, straight, able-bodied male.

A survey from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film found that of the top 100 grossing films of 2017, two

percent had female cinematographers and 14 percent had female editors. And according to the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, across 1,100 of the top grossing films over the past decade, 64, or 5.2 percent, had black directors and 38, or 3.1 percent, had an Asian or Asian-American director.

Academy Gold is an industry-wide effort to infuse the entertainment business with diverse talent at the early stages of a career. The film academy, which puts on the Oscars, has been criticized in the past for the lack of diversity in its membership ranks, and has been making strides to correct over the past two years. In addition to inviting new members with an eye toward inclusion, the Academy Gold program is addressing the issue at an earlier stage.

Academy Gold wrapped its summer program this past weekend and sent its second class of alumni back to finish their college educations armed with a designated mentor for eight months, contacts, peers and even a few new career ideas.

“A lot of students who came in thinking they wanted to do one thing have said, `You know what I think I might be interested in cinematography or editing,”' said Bettina Fisher, the academy's director of educational initiatives.

Tatianna Sims, a 21-year-old New York University student from New Jersey, interned this summer with Marvel Studios in the VFX and post-production department.

“The greatest thing about this program is hearing about firsthand experiences from people who have amazing careers,” said.

“From the outside, it looks like this gilded place where no one can enter, but when speaking with a lot of the panelists you see how

achievable a lot of your goals are.”

Twenty-six entertainment businesses funded the program, which not only ensures that interns are paid, but also provides stipends for over 30 students to help with living expenses. It proved “life-changing” for Vaughn Arterberry, a 22-year-old aspiring director from Oakland, Calif, who interned in production and development at Focus Features this summer before he starts at the University of Southern California Film School in January.

“I wouldn't have been able to afford to live in LA this summer without some help financially,” Arterberry said before a panel on film financing and distribution. “I'm extremely grateful for what they've done.”

Some alumni are already seeing the benefits of their Academy Gold experience and the mentorship with a film academy member that follows.

Jordan Moss, who interned in the accounting department of Paramount Pictures in its pilot year and aspires to be in animated feature development, said he's most grateful for the peers he met.

“I believe that these are the people who are going to be running the industry some day,” Moss said.

Program administrators want to start tracking the development of their alumni as they hopefully get jobs and rise in the industry.

“We have made significant progress and we look forward to pushing this program forward and expanding it to more students in the future,” said Edgar Aguirre, the academy's director of talent development and inclusion. “At the end of the day, this is going to be an opportunity to guide and develop the next generation of leadership in this industry.”

that the average salary for an attorney is more than two times that of elementary and middle school educators. The Washington Post reported last week that nearly 1 in 10 hosts who rent out their apartments, homes and spaces on Airbnb are teachers. Low salaries, compared with other college graduates, may inhibit highly-effective professionals from pursuing a career in education; specifically for people of color who currently make up just seven percent of public school teachers.

I come from a family of educators. My mother, both of my grandmothers, and one of my sisters were teachers. However, the family tradition of educating children ended after me. None of my daughters, nieces, or nephews decided to pursue a career in education. Data comprised from surveys completed during the NNPA’s National Black Parents’ Town Hall Meeting echoed this sentiment. When asked what they believed is needed to close the academic achievement gap, respondents selected community participation and funding over the acquisition of highly-effective teachers.

Many reasons have led to frustrations with teaching in the United States. Work-to-pay ratio, a lack of resources, and an increased focus on standardized testing has made it increasingly difficult for teachers to be highly-effective.

This year, teacher strikes broke out in several states concerning school funding and teacher pay. Teachers in Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and West Virginia left the classroom for the state house to protest the lack of resources in the profession. NPR reported in April that teachers have begun to seek support outside of the educational bureaucracy; forming HYPERLINK “https://www.npr.org/2018/08/17/636832519/ teachers-turning-to-free-supply-shops-to-outfit-their-classrooms” “supply shops” where teachers can swap educational materials for free or at a dramatically reduced cost.

A first-year teacher who attended the National Black Parents’ Town Hall Meeting in Norfolk, VA, said that she stepped into the role of teaching, initially excited, but found by the end of the year she was extremely drained physically and emotionally.

“I stepped into the role, mid-year, with no lesson plan. What can be done to keep teachers teaching and encourage new teachers coming into the program? I really want to teach, but there is very little support.”

Highly-effective teachers require competitive pay, professional support, and access to innovative resources. President Barack Obama signed the current national education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in December 2015 with educators in mind. Title II of ESSA provides program grants to states and districts that can be used for teacher preparation, recruitment, support, and continued learning. ESSA also ends the requirement of states to set up teacher evaluation systems based significantly on students’ test scores which should reduce the pressure teachers feel to teach to the test. The Teacher and School Leader Innovation Program provides grants to districts that want to try out performance pay and other teacher quality improvement measures. ESSA became effective this 2018-2019 school year.

With data compiled from 26 school districts, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) found that on average there were small differences in the effectiveness of teachers of high- and lowincome students, hiring patterns and teacher transfer patterns were consistent, with only minor differences, between high- and low-income students, and that in 3 of the 26 chosen districts there was meaningful inequity in access to effective teachers in math. Data showed that access to highly-effective teachers was relatively equal across the board. Yet, inequities in educational outcomes between low-income students and students from wealthier families persist throughout the United States.

As a new teacher, the constant challenge for me was parental engagement. A working parent’s schedule often left little time during school hours to participate in their child’s education and those who were free during school hours, failed to realize the importance of their presence and participation. Today, meaningful parental engagement remains a challenge for educators.

So, this is a call to action for all parents. Let’s listen to teachers. They are calling for more support and increased pay.

Let’s attend to school meetings to find out how to provide them additional support. Let’s attend city and the state meetings to advocate for competitive pay. Let’s vote for leaders who support the academic advancement of our children through access to additional resources. We need more teacher support, not new teachers.

Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin Dies at 76

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Aretha Franklin, arguably the greatest voice in music history, has died.

The Queen of Soul was 76.

“She will be so missed as a mother, sister, friend, cousin,” said longtime friend Roger Friedman, who also covered the Queen of Soul for decades and originally broke the story about her cancer fight on showbiz411.com.

“Her legacy is larger than life,” Friedman said. “It’s not just that ‘Rolling Stone’ called her the No. 1 singer of all time, or that she’s the Queen of Soul. Long live the Queen.”

Franklin passed away at her home on Thursday, August 16.

“The NNPA profoundly mourns the passing of our beloved ‘Sister Leader’ and Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin,” said NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. “Her creative genius was matched by her steadfast courage as a freedom-fighting singer and leader for civil rights. Black America and all people of goodwill throughout the world will miss her, but her legacy will never be forgotten.”

Dr. Chavis continued: “Long live the spirit and legacy of Queen Aretha Franklin.”

Dorothy Leavell, the chairman of the NNPA and publisher of the Crusader newspapers in Chicago and Gary, Ind., said that she was saddened by the loss of the music icon.

“I send a message of sadness and respect for our beloved Queen whose musical genius [shined brightly] and resounded around the world,” Leavell said.

The fourth of five children, Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Baptist preacher Reverend Clarence La Vaughan “C.L.” Franklin and Barbara Siggers Franklin, a gospel singer, according to her biography.

Franklin’s musical gifts became apparent at an early age.

Largely self-taught, she was regarded as a child prodigy. A gifted pianist with a powerful voice, Franklin got her start singing in front of her father’s congregation.

at his church, which were released by a small label as the album “Songs of Faith” in 1956. She also performed with C.L.’s traveling revival show and, while on tour, befriended gospel greats such as Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke and Clara Ward.

Hitting her stride in 1967 and 1968, Franklin churned out a string of hit singles that would become enduring classics, showcasing Franklin’s powerful voice and gospel roots in a pop framework.

In 1967, the album “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” was released, and the first song on the album, “Respect”— an empowered cover of an Otis Redding track—reached No. 1 on both the R&B and pop charts and won Aretha her first two Grammy Awards.

She also had Top 10 hits with “Baby I Love You,” “Think,” “Chain of Fools,’” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

Franklin’s chart dominance soon earned her the title Queen of Soul, while at the same time she also became a symbol of Black empowerment during the Civil Rights Movement of the time.

In 1968, Franklin was enlisted to perform at the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during which she paid tribute to her father’s fallen friend with a heartfelt rendition of “Precious Lord.”

Later that year, she was also selected to sing the national anthem to begin the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

In 1987, Franklin became the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Detroit.

Prior to her passing this week, Stevie Wonder and the Rev. Jesse Jackson were among those who paid a visit to her at her home in Detroit.

“I prayed with her,” Jackson said.

In a statement, former President Barack Obama lauded Franklin as “The Queen.”

“America has no royalty but we do have a chance to earn something more enduring,” Obama said. “For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience.”

Obama’s statement continued: “In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human.”

And, Obama added, sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance.

“Aretha may have passed on to a better place, but the gift of her music remains to inspire us all,” Obama said. “May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace. Michelle and I send our prayers and warmest sympathies to her family and all those moved by her song.”

MTV VMAs Was a Shocking Event, For the Wrong Reasons

By Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — With most of music industry’s top acts absent — from Beyonce to Bruno Mars — the MTV Video Music Awards lacked star power and felt flat, and some of the winners turned heads — for the wrong reasons.

Exhibit A: Camila Cabello beat out Drake, Mars, Cardi B, Ariana Grande and Post Malone for artist of the year.

“I can’t believe this is for me,” Cabello said Monday onstage.

Neither can we.

Cabello achieved the unthinkable later in the show when she took home the top prize — video of the year — for “Havana.” Cabello’s song was a No. 1 hit and of the video of the year nominees, “Havana” was the second-most viewed clip behind Drake’s “God’s Plan.” But that’s partly since “Havana” was released last year while the other videos came out this year.

It was the night’s most shocking moment, and MTV seemed to send a message: You’re punished for not showing up and rewarded for attending.

Grande won best pop and Post Malone took home song of the year. Drake, the most successful musician of the last year, didn’t win a single award. Beyonce, Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar were restricted to technical honors like editing, art direction, cinematography and visual effects. And Gambino picked up best direction, choreography and video with a message for his heralded video “This Is America.”

The show hit another low when Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B and DJ Khaled won best collaboration for “Dinero” — a song that has peaked at No. 80 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart — besting the record-setting hit “Meant to Be,” by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line, and Mars and Cardi B’s anthemic “Finesse” remix.

Then there was the Aretha Franklin tribute, a moment Madonna made, well, all about Madonna.

The pop icon rambled and rambled about the early struggles in her career, finally informing the crowd that she sang Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” at an audition that became a breakthrough for her.

“None of this would have happened without our lady of soul,” she said. “She led me where I am today. …I want to thank you Aretha for empowering all of us. … Love live the queen.” It wasn’t clear if Madonna meant Franklin, or herself.

At least MTV did played a clip of Franklin, who died last

week, singing “I Say A Little Prayer.”

The VMAs, at Radio City Music Hall in New York, also lacked oomph with its performances throughout the night: Grande was a bore during “God Is a Woman,” but added some excitement when she was joined by her mother, grandmother and cousin onstage at the end of the performance. Travis Scott, whose album is No. 1 for a second week, had strong energy while onstage, but the performance felt like it belonged more to singer James Blake, who is featured on Scott’s album and performed just as long as Scott during the segment.

There were a few highlights. Maluma, the Colombian singer who was nominated twice in the best Latin category, did have an exciting performance as he danced onstage with gyrating dancers.

And Lopez started off slow — Kylie Jenner and Scott’s unamused faces perfectly captured the vibe — but she hit a strong stride when she sang old smashes like “Jenny from the Block,” ”I’m Real” — where Ja Rule joined her onstage — and “All I Have,” which showed the skilled dancer’s vocal range.

But Lopez’s speech was more stirring than her performance: She was emotional as she thanked her children and beau Alex Rodriguez onstage when she earned the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for lifetime achievement.

She was teary-eyed and looked at her “two little angels,” as she called them, and said, “I stand here stronger and better than

ever … so thank you Max and Emme.” She called Rodriguez, who filmed her performance with his phone, “my twin soul.”

“My life is sweeter and better with you in it,” she said.

Cardi B, who gave birth last month, won three awards and said people told her she was “gambling your career” when she decided to become a mother.

“I had the baby, I carried the baby and now I’m still winning awards,” she said.

She also seemed to take aim at Nicki Minaj, who while promoting her new album last week said other musicians have hired fans to listen to their music.

Cardi said she’s been blessed with fans “that you can’t buy,” looking into the camera and shouting an expletive.

Minaj won the first televised award — best hip hop — and checked comedian Tiffany Haddish for dissing girl group Fifth Harmony, now on hiatus.

After congratulating ex-Fifth Harmony member Cabello on her five nominations, Haddish said sarcastically, “Hi Fifth Harmony.” When Minaj accepted an award moments later, she looked to Haddish and said, “Don’t be coming for Fifth Harmony because Normani is that (chick).” Normani currently has her first hit apart from the group with the Khalid-assisted “Love Lies.”

behind Travis Scott, also provided the first bleeped moment of the night when she told the audience to listen to her Apple Music radio show this week to hear “who the (expletive) of the day award is going to.”

There was just one political moment, orchestrated when Logic was joined onstage by young immigrants wearing T-shirts that read, “We are all human beings” to protest the Trump administration’s separation of migrant children from their parents after they illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. The rapper, best known for the suicide prevention anthem “1-800-2738255,” wore a T-shirt that read, “(Expletive) the wall.”

There was one posthumous winner: Avicii, who died in April, won for best dance for “Lonely Together” alongside Rita Ora.

The Eagles Greatest Hits Beats Michael Jackson “Thriller”?

By MESFIN FEKADU AP Music Writer NEW YORK (AP) _ The Eagles’ greatest hits album has moonwalked past Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to become history’s best-selling album of all-time.

The Recording Industry Association of America told The Associated Press on Monday that the Eagles' album _ “Their

Greatest Hits 1971-1975” _ is now certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of the album have reached 38 million copies.

The album was released in 1976 and pushes Jackson's “Thriller,” which is 33x platinum, to second place.

RIAA also said that the Eagles' “Hotel California,” released in 1977, is now 26x platinum and makes it the third best-selling album of all-time.

The last time RIAA tallied sales for the Eagles’ greatest hits album was in 2006, when it said it was 29x platinum. Sales and streams for “Thriller” were last updated last year.

“We are grateful for our families, our management, our crew, the people at radio and, most of all, the loyal fans who have stuck with us through the ups and downs of 46 years. It's been quite a ride,” Don Henley said in a statement.

RIAA's platinum status was once equivalent to selling one million albums or songs, but in 2013 the company began incorporating streaming from YouTube, Spotify and other digital music services to determine certification for albums and songs.

Now 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to an album sale. Also, 10 song downloads (equals) 1 album sale.

The Eagles, who formed in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, mastered the mix of rock `n' roll and country music, and the band's hits _ including “Hotel California” and “Take It Easy _ became part of the soundtrack of that decade. They broke up in 1980, coming back together 14 years later with Henley and Glenn Frey being the only remaining original members. Frey died in 2016, but the Grammy-winning band remains on tour.

The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2016.

Features The Los Angeles Rams welcome the Oakland Raiders

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com The Oakland Raiders, soon to be Las Vegas Raiders and former Los Angeles Raiders, come back to the Los Angeles Coliseum for the first time since 1994. This time they come to face the Los Angeles Rams in the first home game of the PreSeason. This is time for everyone from the players and coaches, referees and statisticians to get in game shape. Even the reporters

covering the game need to find their seats, through the renovation of the Coliseum.

The Replay officials clearly need to get in game shape as they neglected to review a Conner Cook (Raiders QB) turnover after his arm hit the helmet of his lineman and popped out. The

fumble was then recovered by the ILB Ramik Wilson of the Rams, who happens to be competing for playing time at the linebacker position. That fumble recovery led to a 2yard Touchdown Run by rookie running back John Kelly.

Though this was a pre-season game, the Raiders fans showed

up like it was a playoff game. Whether they were showed up to support their new head coach, or just to antagonize Rams fans, the Raiders have flooded the Coliseum on Saturday. Their presence was heard, especially when they began to boo the Rams mascot while he was on the big screen awarded a local child an award. The boos of the Raider fans drowned out the presentation.

The Rams took a 10-point lead on the leg of their Field Goal kicker after he made his second field goal attempt of the day. The stiff competition for the Rams linebacking position continues as Bryce Hager recovers a fumble of his own. To put the Rams in scoring position once again, late in the second quarter. Because these two teams are set to play in three weeks, the Rams appear are not showing anything to Raiders as they settle for a 28-yard field to end the half.

The Rams opened the third quarter with Brandon Allen at Quarterback. Allen took the team on a long drive that ended up in another Rams FG. The Raiders had a workhouse on their side though, in undrafted Rookie Running Back Chris Warren III. The Raiders rode the legs of Warren as they responded with an 8-play scoring drive of their own to close out the third quarter.

On their following drive, the Raiders continue to ride rookie Running Back Chris Warren III, as he eclipsed the 100-yard mark, leading them to a field, which has brought them within a touchdown to tie the game. As good as Brandon Allen was looking throughout the second half, he threw an interception to give the Raiders great field position. The Raiders were then gifted more yardage on a terrible helmet/ targeting flag on the Rams, which gave the Raiders the ball in scoring position.

EJ Manuel hit Griff Whalen on a slant route, which Whalen made an awesome catch a turn to get in the end zone. Down by one, Gruden had the option to go for the Extra Point to tie the game or go for a 2-point conversion to win the game. They decided on a less than creative 2point conversion that was stopped short. The Rams then took the ball drove into scoring position before the Raiders stopped the Rams and gave themselves one final chance to win the game, that ultimately fell short.

Both teams just completed their second of four-pre-season games. When asked if he thought he needs 2 more games to get his team ready for the Regular Season Sean McVay responded by stating, “you don’t ever take for granted the work and being able to play in these live game situations and what that does for your team. But its that that balance of getting the work at the risk of, if someone gets rolled up in a game that really not going to count… how do you measure that?” “But, certainly, we do have a lot of work to do until we’re ready to roll for that September 10th date, that’s what we do know for sure!”

I would like to see the Rams allow their starters to get more playing time before that second Monday in September. Given that the Rams did win their division last season, teams will be coming for the Rams with their best shot. Though I trust and believe in McVay, I think their starters should get a minimum of 3 quarters of playing time in the coming Pre- Season Game versus the Houston Texans. By ARIEL TU Associated Press SAN MARINO, Calif. (AP) – Visitors were flocking to the Huntington Library in Southern California on Friday to get a whiff of a so-called corpse flower, known for the rotten stench it releases when it blooms.

The flower, nicknamed “Stink,” began blooming unexpectedly on Thursday night, Huntington spokeswoman Lisa Blackburn said.

“We thought we had a few more days to go. But it was ready, and it was pretty spectacular,” she said. “The great thing about these flowers is they're so unusual-looking and have this reputation for smelling really bad. It gets all kinds of people really interested in botanical science. It's just a charismatic plant.”

Corpse flowers typically take 15 years to reach a mature blooming size, and blooms usually only last 24 hours.

The foul odor the plants emit attracts insects for pollination.

The plants don't emit the foul odor until they bloom.

“It smelled like rotting meat or decaying rats or gym socks,” said Brandon Tam, an orchid specialist at the Huntington.

The scent decreased on Friday afternoon as the flower started to close back up. “But if you are close enough, you'll be able to get a little whiff of it,” Tam said.

“Stink” is the sixth corpse flower to bloom at the institution in suburban San Marino. The last was on Aug. 23, 2014.

The plant is one of the three corpse flowers expected to bloom within the next week. The two other flowers, nicknamed “Stunk” and “Stank,” should bloom in the next few days, Blackburn said.

“This is the first time the Huntington is going to bloom total of three in one season, which is quite rare,” Tam said. “It is a surprise to see we have three all at once.”

The Huntington is seeing more visitors than normal. More than 500 Huntington members flocked to the Huntington Library to view the blooming on Thursday night, Tam said.

“I've known about the corpse flower since the first time I saw it in 2009. So every time I hear about it about to bloom, I want to come and see it,” visitor Jeannette Hollyday said.

Her passion about education and her desire to create opportunities for HBCU students are two of the many reasons she partnered with the NNPA and Chevrolet, the program’s sponsor.

As she continues her great acts of philanthropy, MC Lyte said that music and journalism are much alike, as they are both used to tell stories.

MC Lyte became great friends with Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA, through his work in hip-hop and civil rights.

When she got the call about the NNPA’s DTU program, she said that she was happy to help out; she said that representing the DTU program is a great fit.

When it comes to her philanthropic work that grew out of her music career, MC Lyte said that she always wanted to give back. That sense of altruism manifested early on in her music career with her hit single “I Cram to Understand U,” which included a strong anti-drug message, geared towards the Black community.

MC Lyte made it her responsibility to advocate for young people and to shed light on the deluge of heroin and crack cocaine that flooded her Brooklyn neighborhood in the 70’s and 80’s.

“I don’t think that I really do anything for me, per se,” MC Lyte said. “It’s about getting out there, [using] the MC Lyte name, to form partnerships with bigger entities and to gain access to resources and sharing those resources with the people who need them the most.”

Hip-hop pioneers like Salt-N-Pepa and Rakim inspired MC Lyte to partake in the music industry at such an early age.

MC Lyte also vividly remembered how the Bronx-born, hip-hop

group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five helped to shape her storytelling rap style.

MC Lyte said that “The Message,” the Furious Five classic featuring Melly Mel, painted a picture of life in the Bronx that was very different from her life in Brooklyn, where she was born and raised. “The Message” influenced MC Lyte to gravitate towards the storytelling aspect of hip-hop. MC Lyte described “Lyte as a Rock,” her first album, as “a book of poems and short stories.”

“It was easy to get into a [creative] space and just write,” MC Lyte said. “My mother made me write an essay for whatever I wanted to do.”

MC Lyte said that young artists, who are pursuing careers in the entertainment business, should educate themselves about royalties, build a trustworthy team and seek legal advice when necessary.

“Never sign anything without counsel and always sign your own checks,” MC Lyte advised.

Reminiscing about her career in the music industry, if given the opportunity to change or do anything different, MC Lyte said that she would have said “yes” more often and been more open to trying new music genres and collaborating with unexpected artists.”

Although, MC Lyte is often credited as a pioneer in hip-hop culture, her passion to ignite change on a greater scale was alive from the very beginning. She was one of the first female rappers to speak out against sexism and misogyny in the industry. Her voice shook up the male-dominated hip-hop scene and helped pave the way for female MC’s that followed in her footsteps, like Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott.

Getting Equipped to Head Back to School

Over 1,200 Backpacks, School Shoes, and Supplies Distributed at Annual Back to School Jams During the month of August, the Community Development Commission/Housing Authority of the County of Los Angeles (CDC/HACoLA) hosted its annual series of Back to School Jams at the Carmelitos, Harbor Hills, Nueva Maravilla, and South County (Scattered Sites) public housing developments. These annual events first began in 2000, and have become a welcomed tradition by public housing youth and their families eager to make the upcoming school year a success.

The CDC/HACoLA was honored to have Congressman Alan Lowenthal attend the Carmelitos event in Long Beach, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters participate in the Harbor Hills event in Lomita. Each Representative spent time visiting with residents, thanking vendors for their participation, and handing out backpacks to students.

During the Back to School Jams, over 60 exhibitors provided educational and health-related resources and information to some 700 families. A partial list of participating agencies included: the Los Angeles County Library; California State University Long Beach, Educational Opporunity Center; St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Van; Women, Infants, and Children Program; Office of Samoan Affairs; Long Beach Unified School District; Alma Family Services; and the Los Angeles County Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services Department.

“Each year, the support from local community groups and public and private organizations helps relieve the financial burden of sending kids back to school,” said Monique King-Viehland, CDC/HACoLA Executive Director. “The Back to School Jams celebrate the learning opportunities and fun that will come in the upcoming school year.”

Over 1,200 public housing youth were treated to entertainment, food, dance, brand new books, and raffles. The highlight of each Back to School Jam was the distribution of backpacks stocked with age-appropriate school supplies, and athletic shoes for each public housing youth attending grades K-12. These gifts were made possible through the generous support of City of Lomita Sheriff’s Station, Southside Church of Christ, Cottonwood Church, and Shelter Partnership, a local non-profit organization which provides resources and housing through its S. Mark Taper Foundation Shelter Resource Bank. A special acknowledgement also goes out to Power 106 radio station who provided entertainment and give-aways at the Harbor Hills event.

LA Child Support Services Partners with Community Organizations and Agencies The Los Angeles County Child Support Services Department (CSSD) is taking its services directly to the community on Thursday, August 23rd from 10:00 a.m.-2 p.m. at Child Support Connect Day, a special community engagement event featuring information about child support, jobs and other social services.

Child Support Connect Day will be held at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, 1731 E. 120th St., in Los Angeles. The event is supported by the offices of L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and California Assemblyman

Mike Gipson and social service agencies and community organizations.

Child support professionals from Los Angeles County Child Support Services will be on hand to answer general questions about department services and work with customers who have child support cases. The child support professionals will be able to discuss case status, right sized child support orders, license release issues if applicable and the Compromise of Arrears Program.
