Reporting Racist Remark Led to Retaliation

GRAND LEDGE, Mich. (AP) – A central Michigan city employee says he faced retaliation after reporting a supervisor for making a racist comment.

The Lansing State Journal reports that 59-year-old Jeff Mitchner, a part-time employee with the Grand ledge public service department, says city officials slashed his hours and tried to “bully” him into dropping the claim, That came after Mitchner, who is black, reported his supervisor for allegedly using a racial slur for African Americans in June.

Mitchner said he hadn’t heard that word directed aloud at him in more than three decades. He added that his supervisor apologized and told him that he “wasn’t racist.”

Mitchner’s hours were restored after filing a union grievance. Grand Ledge officials declined to comment.

Full of energy and a friend to most, Macklin, 41, wears many hats: Husband, father, entrepreneur, wrestling champion.

He is also a convicted felon.

Until the May primary election, Macklin was unable to vote because of what’s known as felony disenfranchisement.

According to a study following the November 2016 election, it’s estimated that 6.1 million Americans are unable to vote because they had felonies on their record. Tennessee is one of 12 states with post-sentence voter restriction laws. In six of those states, including Tennessee, more than 7 percent of the adult population is disenfranchised.

The story of Macklin’s efforts to regain full citizenship illustrates the steps involved in regaining the right to vote.

Though he smiles when recalling his childhood, Macklin, a 1996 Whitehaven High School graduate, says his early years weren’t easy.

“Hectic. House to house. Really, wasn’t nothing stable,” Macklin said. “My mom left when I was in the third grade and moved to (California). I didn’t see her again until my senior year of college.”

After bouncing from his mother’s house to his aunt’s, he eventually moved in with his father in the ninth grade. It would be 2001, during his final year at Albany State University, before he again laid eyes on his mother.

Charmed Reboot Producers Defend Shows Changes

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) – The cast and producers of CW’s new “Charmed” are defending the reboot as a story for its time.

Series executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman said the drama series about three young half-sisters who are witches will confront modern issues including the MeToo movement.

The varied ethnicity of the sisterly trio - white, Latina and African-American - also gives the reboot more currency, Urman told a TV critics’ meeting Monday. The siblings have the same mom but different fathers.

Most people she’s talked to are in favor of the switch to characters of color, Urman said.

The original “Charmed” debuted in 1998 with Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty as the three Halliwell witch-sisters. Rose McGowan joined the series in 2006.

By Lauren Poteat NNPA Newswire Washington Correspondent Thousands of people from across the country gathered in San Antonio, Texas for the 109th Annual NAACP Convention.

The daring theme of this year’s convention (“Stop Hate, Vote”) was right on target, given that the 2018 midterm elections are just a few months away. Panels and breakout sessions also focused on social justice and civil rights in the Trump Era, conversations that NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson deemed “highly necessary.”

“As we begin to look at the critical landscape—with the increase in intolerance and hatred—we realize that the 2016 elections resulted in a new level of boldness for racists to display their racism,” Johnson said. “The only way to counter that is to vote…Vote on the midterm elections, so that we can hold elected officials accountable and make sure that they implement positive change.”

The convention also included a diverse career fair, educational seminars, workshops on public policy, and a special hip-hop summit. Johnson also spoke about the importance of millennials and their community and political engagement.

“Millennials should understand that their role in democracy is the same as everyone else’s,” Johnson said. “We are African Americans first and we owe it to our communities to use all of the tools necessary to better impact our society.”

Championing this effort, NAACP Chairman Leon W. Russell shared his own ideas during his annual convention address.

“In this new era of xenophobia, neo-Nazism, White

nationalism, and current efforts to take our nation back to a darker and more dangerous time, I have come to San Antonio, Texas to say to the NAACP and our allies, ‘the time has come to defeat hate.’”

Russell continued: “We call on voters, especially millennials of color, to stand against the face of bigotry and divisiveness.”

Acknowledging that nearly 63 million Americans voted for the current president and that Black voter turnout declined, Russell still expressed hope for the future.

“Our hope is to vote out the hate and we need everyone to vote,” Russell said.

The NAACP also honored Willie Brown, San Francisco’s first Black mayor, with the “Spingarn Medal,” the organization’s most prestigious award; the award was in recognition of his years of civil rights work and dedication to the betterment of the Black community.

Former President Bill Clinton presented the award to Brown and paid tribute to the civil rights activist. Brown said that the Spingarn Medal represented his dedication to public service and the community.

Dozens of millennials attended this year’s convention, much to the pleasure of former NAACP President and current National Newspaper Publishers Association President Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. “The NAACP is just as relevant today as it was 50 years ago,” Dr. Chavis said. “The potential that the organization has with these millennials is even greater. The NAACP literally has the opportunity to embrace these young lives and thus be embraced, to create an even better, bolder organization for the lives of all people.”

An online mental health marketplace is giving free, confidential therapy sessions to Flushing faithful who fill out a form asking for their most difficult moments as fans.

The company, which reportedly has an estimated worth of $16 billion, also manufactures e-liquid “JUULpods” that contain nicotine salts, which Burns said result in nicotine delivery that users find as satisfying as what they get from traditional cigarettes. The liquid pods contain benzoic acid, a naturally occurring ingredient that, when combined with nicotine, helps in mimicking the peak nicotine delivery of a cigarette.

A single JUULpod contains five percent nicotine; a three percent nicotine pod will be more widely available this month, Burns said.

“We hope the availability of different nicotine strengths will continue to allow adult smokers the ability to explore what’s best for them,” Burns said.

That’s important for African Americans, Hispanics, lowerincome individuals and many military veterans, all who tend to use nicotine products, he said.

“We’re formulating a plan now. We have a partnership with Black Mental Health Alliance…doing community work and we’re working on the population that’s underserved and overharmed,” Burns said.

The company is also making efforts in terms of retail auditing to make sure people are not selling their products to underage youth, Burns said.

The company takes underage smoking very seriously and, to that end, they’re also establishing the use of Bluetooth technology which could one day shut devices down around schools and other places, Burns said.

JUUL is also developing a Bluetooth-enabled device in international markets that consumers can link to health and wellness apps on their smartphones.

“We are looking at the ability to allow them to reduce their dependence,” Burns said. “Connection to the app may have features that allow you to monitor and have active management of your device, which can actively manage nicotine levels; getting people off of [combustible] cigarettes is a big win.”

Burns concluded: “With the hardware and software, we’ll be able to give people every opportunity to minimize their relationship with nicotine. This will be done through a very sophisticated technology where we will have a device connected to an app that will allow you to have active management of your use.”

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor Kevin Burns, the CEO of the e-cigarette technology firm JUUL Labs, said his company is dedicated to eliminating traditional cigarette smoking by offering existing adult smokers a real alternative to combustible cigarettes.

The JUUL device uses an intelligent heating mechanism that creates an aerosol and is engineered to minimize combustion, according to the company’s website.

Burns, who formally served as president and COO of the Greek yogurt brand Chobani, told the NNPA Newswire that JUUL remains focused on improving the lives of the more than 38 million adults who smoke in America and the one billion-plus who indulge in cigarette use around the globe.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black adults smoke cigarettes at roughly the same rate as White adults (16.5 percent for non-Hispanic Blacks vs. 16.6

“We think we can bring a solution that can have an incredible impact on people switching from combustible tobacco products [to e-cigarettes],” Burns said.

The company has created educational materials to support underserved communities and they continue to encourage the use of their products by adults only, Burns said.

“Our intent is not to have people who aren’t using nicotine products to [purchase our products],” Burns said. “We don’t want non-users and we don’t want underage users.”

JUUL Labs has spared little expense in its educational efforts.

In the United States, youth are more likely than adults to use e-cigarettes, according to the CDC, which makes those education efforts even more critical, as the company expands into new markets.

JUUL Labs established an advisory council for community outreach and youth education awareness and prevention in Baltimore, Md. It’s the first city in which JUUL is attempting a hands-on approach, aligning with partners like the Black Mental Health Alliance and Baltimore Corps., an organization that enlists talented individuals in public service and social entrepreneurship in Baltimore.

When asked how does JUUL plan to market its products to African Americans and Hispanics, Burns said the company is evaluating options.

Though Macklin earned a living selling electronics, one of his friends was a cocaine supplier. Macklin was around the game long enough to know he wanted to be part of it.

In 2005, on what would’ve otherwise been a normal Saturday morning, Macklin’s phone rang. Before they swung by the neighborhood gym that evening, his supplier friend asked Macklin to go for a ride with him. But, it wasn’t a regular trip. It was a drug pickup to get 5 kilos of cocaine.

Their afternoon plans didn’t play out the way the duo expected.

Unbeknownst to both men, the person driving the drugs from Houston to Memphis was stopped by police. After giving officials details of the intercepted deal, police trailed the man to the pick-up location in Memphis.

“As soon as we pulled up, the guy pulled up. We take all of the drugs from him, he pulled off, and all the cops pulled in,” said Macklin.

With someone else taking the fall, Macklin and his friend bonded out the same day. The moment he stepped from behind bars following the arrest, Macklin said he was a changed man.

“I wanted to get out . it was smooth sailing,” he said of his decision to leave his short stint in the drug game in the past.

So when he got a call two years later with an order to report to a federal building in downtown Memphis, he wasn’t exactly sure why. But once he arrived, Macklin knew his smooth sailing had come to a temporary halt.

Because the driver of the cocaine transported the drugs across state lines, Houston officials charged Macklin and his accomplice with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute in excess of 5 kilos of cocaine.

“When they went to sentencing, they started off with nine years (in prison), but I wouldn’t take it,” he said. “I went from nine to six and from six to five. When it got to five, I decided to sign.”

In 2007 – two years after that Saturday morning traffic stop, six years after losing his mother to drugs, and shortly after proposing to his girlfriend - Macklin went to prison.

During his 39 months behind bars, Macklin missed out on big moments. One stood out: Voting for the man who became the first African-American president of the United States.

“It sucked... and being behind bars, just watching on TV and seeing it,” he said.

But despite being allowed to watch Barack Obama win the presidency, voting wasn’t a topic of discussion among inmates.

Macklin, who believes prisons don’t do enough to equip inmates for successful re-entry into the world, says no one at the facility ever spoke with him about having his voting rights restored.

“Prison is a joke, and I tell everyone that. They don’t help you do nothing,” he said.

After serving his time, Macklin was released in 2011. With a felony conviction on his record, his primary goal was getting his life back to normal. He married the love of his life and eventually resumed working at Best Buy. He even became an entrepreneur, opening a mobile detailing service.

A free man, he thought he had it all: Family, employment, a roof over his head. Yet, his citizenship wasn’t quite complete.

At the urging of his wife, Macklin began the process to have his voting rights restored.

Macklin didn’t know where to begin. He says that having voting rights restored wasn’t a concept many inmates were made aware of before their release.

So, with the help of family and friends, he researched how to get started.

The process seemed simple enough: Complete all parole requirements and submit a certification of restoration to the election commission. But, as easy as it seemed, Macklin faced a hurdle.

“I got denied the first time,” Macklin said of his first attempt. “I was done with it... but other people told me I needed to go back and try again.”

After obtaining documentation to prove that he was no longer on parole, Macklin made a second attempt at having his rights restored. And, he succeeded just in time for the May 2018 primary election.

“I was geeked. I was teary eyed. I instantly went and voted,” he said, describing what it felt like to head to the poll with his wife and son.

Had it not been for the support from those around him, Macklin may have remained one of more than 6 million people in the United States who are unable to vote. It’s something Memphis community activist and pastor Earle Fisher says is an issue.

“You don’t see this issue (voter restoration) amplified high enough, at a high enough volume and pitch,” said Fisher. “Kontar should not have had to go through all of these hoops after he had served his time.

“The process is so convoluted that it’s discouraging people from trying to get their rights restored because they feel like they served their time, but they still have to jump through so many hoops. That it is adding insult to injury and pouring salt into the wounds of their citizenship.”

Voter registration card in hand, Macklin is doing his part to educate others. On his personal Facebook page, the entrepreneur is transparent about his journey. He uses the outlet to show others that anything is possible.

“I’m ready to show guys that it can be done, but you have to want it. You can’t sit back and chill,” Macklin said.

“I’m always going to push to be better, Macklin said. “This here is a privilege, and you have to use it. Take advantage of it... because it can easily be taken away from you.”

Tom Vilsack, a Democrat. “I’ve never seen us three months away from the midterms where we haven’t had people like that here,” said Sue Dvorsky, a longtime Democratic activist in Democrat-heavy Iowa City and a former state party chairwoman.

The positioning that is happening in Iowa ahead of 2020 is largely playing out in private.

Warren has spoken with Vilsack by phone several times this year, the former governor said. He has also fielded regular calls from other 2020 presidential prospects. Biden has kept in touch with Dubuque-area Democrats, notably ahead of his June endorsement of a congressional candidate.

Mark Smith, Democratic leader in the Iowa House of Representatives, said he discussed statehouse campaign contributions with Booker last month at a New Jersey diner.

Harris offered Iowa secretary of state candidate Deirdre DeJear some in-person encouragement at an event in Los Angeles in April, DeJear said.

Sanders visited Iowa in February as a favor to his former caucus campaign director Pete D’Alessandro, who lost a June primary for a Des Moines-area House seat. He has been less guarded than his potential 2020 rivals, arguing amid his travels that the party needs to broaden its appeal everywhere.

Most others have played down any Iowa contact, except in pursuit of midterm goals.

Harris “has been very clear that her top political priority this cycle is to elect and protect more Democrats in the Senate,” said her spokeswoman, Lily Adams. “She has also made sure to put her support behind candidates who share her values and to make statehouses look more like the population of this country.”

Still, some potential candidates are dipping their toes in other early voting states. In June, Warren headlined the state Democratic Party convention in Nevada, which has the cover of a close Senate race this year. Biden endorsed his friend, South Carolina lawyer Dick Harpootlian, for state House last week.

Previous presidential prospects have often set up at least skeleton Iowa organizations by this point, in part to sow goodwill with activists who can be crucial to victory in the caucuses.

Then-Vice President Al Gore began visiting Iowa more than a year ahead of the 1998 midterms to lay down a marker that kept all but New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley from challenging him in the 2000 caucuses.

At the same time, presumed Democratic powerhouse Hillary Clinton stayed away from Iowa during the 2006 midterm campaign while then-Sen. Evan Bayh and former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, now a senator, tried to establish themselves early as viable challengers. They visited often in early 2006 and financed campaign staff for 2006 Iowa races.

That campaign produced the unexpected dynamic of two party superstars, as Barack Obama, then a freshman Illinois senator, decided late in 2006 to explore running for president.

His rock-star reception at a September Democratic fundraiser in Iowa that year foretold the head-to-head clash of the two stars.

After losing the 2008 caucuses and the nomination to Obama, Clinton returned to Iowa in September 2014 and became the early target of Sanders, who would narrowly lose to Clinton in the 2016 caucuses and dog her throughout the primaries.

“It’s hard to be first,” Vilsack said. “You put yourself out there, and the analyzing and criticizing starts.”

The Constitution: Shield for Civil/Human Rights Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh has Proven that He’s Faithful to the Constitution

By Kay Coles James President, The Heritage Foundation It’s shaping up to be a hot summer in D.C.—and for reasons having nothing to do with the weather.

In a few weeks, the Senate will decide whether a D.C. Circuit Court judge named Brett Kavanaugh should be the nation’s next Supreme Court justice. And from my office window, I can already hear the battle cries.

Kavanaugh’s opponents describe him as a “threat to our democracy.” They are shouting that “the future of America is at stake.” And they warn his confirmation will “turn the clock back on our rights.”

Having been around politics for decades, I tend to ignore a lot of this type of stuff. But when someone says the clock may be turned back on our rights, it gets my attention.

I’ve been involved in the battle for civil rights most of my life. As a 12-year-old student back in 1961, I helped integrate a Whites-only school in Richmond, Va. As a college student at Hampton Institute (now University), I protested for student rights.

As a young mom, I volunteered with Housing Opportunities Made Equal to fight racism and achieve equal access. And as Virginia’s Secretary for Health and Human Resources, I fought for empowerment reform that helped low-income men and women achieve the pride and dignity of employment.

So I took the ‘rollback of civil rights’ line seriously and looked into it. And what I found out just might surprise you.

Judge Kavanaugh has been a steadfast supporter of civil rights, because he has been consistently faithful to the Constitution. For example, during his 2006 Senate confirmation for the D.C. Circuit Court, he said: “…some of the worst moments in the Supreme Court’s history have been moments of judicial activism, like the Dred Scott case…where the Court went outside its proper bounds, in my judgment, in interpreting clauses of the Constitution to impose its own policy views.”

That means that, when questions have come before him, he hasn’t answered them with a “here’s what I personally think” type of answer. Instead, he’s addressed them with a “here’s what the Constitution has to say” ruling.

And that speaks volumes about the type of Justice he will be.

You see, the U.S. Constitution is the very reason we even have a thing called ‘civil rights.’ Before America was born, the world was a very different place. How a person lived depended on where they were born, who their parents and grandparents were, how rich they were, and so on. If you were born poor, you were likely to stay poor. And if you were a minority in your country,

you were unlikely to ever have equal treatment under their laws.

America was created to be an exception to the global norm that limited freedom, curtailed liberties, denied due process, and caused poverty to persist across generations. We had to overcome huge obstacles, of course, but the extraordinary achievements we’ve realized would not have been possible without our Constitution.

Instead of being a sword against freedom and rights, the Constitution has been the shield that’s made them possible.

Whenever obstacles stood in the way—including segregation and other evil Jim Crow laws—it was the Constitution that cast them aside. Liberty? The Constitution grants it in its very first sentence. Slavery? It was abolished by the Constitution in its 13th Amendment Citizenship? You can find that in the Constitution, too—it’s right there in the 14th Amendment. So is our right to vote, which is made clear for all to see in the Constitution’s 15th Amendment.

That’s why it’s absolutely crucial that Judge Kavanaugh— like all who do or may serve on the Supreme Court—is faithful to the Constitution.

Simply put, being true to the Constitution is the key to our democracy. It’s more important than any single issue, any political party, or any partisan interest. Indeed, there’s nothing more important than upholding the document that established and secures our rights.

That’s why the Constitution grants judges the power to determine whether a law is constitutional—not the power to make or change it.

Good judges know this. They know they have to fulfill their awesome duty without ever overstepping it. Bad judges don’t.

They inject their own preferences into the law, they pick favorite issues and sides, and they invent new reasons to rule the way they want.

Bad judges denied Blacks equal rights in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case of 1857 I mentioned above. They banned interracial marriage in the 1883 case, Pace v. Alabama. And they institutionalized segregation with the “separate, but equal” doctrine in 1896 with Plessy v. Ferguson.

In each of those cases, bad judges put their own racist views ahead of the Constitution’s protections. They were wrong—and that’s why, in each case, they were overruled by later Supreme Court justices who were faithful to the Constitution.

And it’s because Judge Kavanaugh has proven throughout his career to be 100 percent faithful to the Constitution that he has my total support. Not for his sake, but for ours.

Is Justice Blind at a Courthouse with a Confederate Statue?

(AP) – The statue of the unnamed Confederate soldier has stood since 1909 in front of the courthouse in Louisiana's East Feliciana Parish, hands resting on his rifle looking down on the flow of lawyers, jurors and defendants going into the white columned building.

Ronnie Anderson, an African-American man charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, and speeding, was one such defendant and the statue gave him cause for concern.

“It's just intimidating to walk into a courthouse that's supposed to be a place of equality, fair justice and to see this monument that made me feel like ... I don't stand a chance,” Anderson said.

Anderson wants his case to be moved to another parish without such a memorial; his motion to change venue argues he can't get a fair trial in the same place where a “symbol of oppression and racial intolerance” stands.

Confederate flags and monuments – long a part of the Southern landscape _ have come under renewed scrutiny following the 2015 shooting by Dylann Roof of nine black churchgoers in South Carolina and the 2017 deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Supporters say the statues are a part of history honoring their ancestors; detractors say they, in effect, honor slavery and in many cases were erected during the Jim Crow era to intimidate black people and bolster white supremacy.

Confederate monuments dot the lawns of many Southern courthouses. In addition to the one in East Feliciana, a database compiled by the Southern Poverty Law Center lists 11 more in front of Louisiana courthouses.

Ben Cohen, a lawyer with the New Orleans-based Promise of Justice Initiative that advocates for reforming Louisiana's criminal justice system, says so far it's rare for defendants to use the legal argument Anderson is making.

By Lauren Burke NNPA Newswire Contributor President Donald Trump recently met with a group of Black and Latino pastors about prison reform issues. Trump’s son-inlaw, Jared Kushner, has been meeting with journalists in off-therecord briefings on the issue of prison reform and is working with Congress to build support for the “Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person

Act” (FIRST STEP Act).

Jared Kushner’s father, Charles Kushner, served time in federal prison in Alabama; Jared has taken a special interest in prison reform and pushed to pass the “FIRST STEP Act.” The bill has passed the House and awaits consideration in the Senate.

During the on-camera portion of the meeting, none of the pastors asked any substantive questions; some of them heaped praise on President Trump.

Dr. Van Moody of The Worship Center in Birmingham, Ala., thanked President Trump “for being compassionate and caring about all people.”

Dr. Moody praised the president’s compassion, despite the recent revelation that officials with the Department of Health and Human Services warned the Trump administration that separating families would be dangerous for children, The New York Times reported.

“Trump dropped the policy more than a month ago under fire from Democrats and Republicans alike,” according to The New York Times. “But of more than 2,500 children who were initially separated from parents and guardians, hundreds remain in federal custody including more than 400 whose parents left the U.S. without them.”

Senior Pastor John Gray of Relentless Church in Greenville, S.C., prayed over the meeting.

“Dr. King said we cannot influence a table that we are not seated at,” Gray prayed. “And so we pray that this conversation will be fruitful, and productive, and honoring of the best traditions of this nation.”

Trump asked the pastors to each speak on the issue and share their thoughts. Many of the pastors, who of course were handpicked by the White House, offered compliments on Trump’s leadership and his commitment to faith-based initiatives and the recent efforts on prison reform.

Dr. Goudeaux asked President Trump not to “give up on California,” a line that made everyone laugh, while Travis Hayes, the CFO of Our Relentless Church said, “I’m honored to be here among—in the presence of greatness.”

Pastor Darrell Scott said that Trump was going to be the, “most pro-Black president that we’ve had in our lifetime.”

“This president actually wants to prove something to our community—our faith-based community and our ethnic community,” Scott said. “[President Obama] didn’t feel like he had to…he got a pass.

Jared Kushner noted that President Trump asked him to lead efforts to try to reform America’s prisons and to see what could be done at the federal government-level.

According to the Sentencing Project, 1 in every 10 Black men his thirties is in prison or jail on any given day. The United States is the world’s leader in incarceration.

“We were running into a little problem of politics in Congress,” Kushner said, adding that he reached out to the pastors to help get the word out about the need for prison reform and “to let people in Washington know that making progress on this issue was more important than whatever political differences people may have.”

The session with the pastors at the White House lasted about an hour.

In addition to President Trump and the pastors, the White House attendees included Chief of Staff John Kelly; Brooke Rollins, assistant to the president on intergovernmental and technology initiatives; Andrew Bremberg, director of the Domestic Policy Council; Ja’Ron Smith, special assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs; and Jennifer Korn, special assistant to the president and deputy director of the Office of Public Liaison.

Cohen represented a defendant appealing a conviction in a Caddo Parish murder case in which a prospective juror objected to the Confederate flag in front of the courthouse.

The state Supreme Court ultimately upheld the conviction but Cohen said he anticipates this argument being used more often.

“I think people are looking at these monuments in a new light,” he said.

Officials in Caddo Parish voted last October to remove theirs. They concluded that citizens would be better served if it was not in front of the courthouse “where justice is to be administered fairly and impartially.” A lawsuit stalled the move, but was recently dismissed by a federal judge.

The East Feliciana Parish District Attorney, Sam D'Aquilla says its “ridiculous” to think a statue would affect the fairness of Anderson's trial and questions why an out-of-town defendant and lawyer are stirring up trouble in the primarily rural parish, located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Baton Rouge.

Anderson is from Plaquemines Parish to the southeast and was driving through when he was pulled over. His lawyer, Niles Haymer is based in Baton Rouge.

D'Aquilla said he doesn't have an opinion on the statue but regardless of whether it's there the people inside strive for colorblind justice. He also points out the racial diversity of the elected officials across the parish.

“All the elected officials that I know of, your judges, your clerk of court, your sheriff, we all strive for racial equality. And we work hard for that,” he said.

This is not the first time the East Feliciana Parish statue has come under scrutiny.

In 2016, retired physician Paul Jackson Jr. asked the parish to move the statue to a local Confederate cemetery. He says having the statue on the courthouse grounds signals that the Confederacy was for justice: “But it wasn't. They're for slavery obviously.”

His suggestion was debated during a parish meeting and ultimately rejected. Jackson said he lost two friends over the issue.

He said he supports Anderson's change-of-venue motion.

Lataya Johnson, who lives and works in the parish, sympathized with Anderson's argument and dismissed the idea that most people don't pay attention to the statue.

“You walk by and you think about it. Because if you're African-American do you look at it and say, `My fate is already destined because of this statue ... Judgment has already been made because of this statue,”' she said.

But parish president Louis Kent said Anderson is “very mistaken” in believing he will not get a fair trial in East Feliciana.

By Cameron Buford Whatsgoodinsports.com For years I avoided joining all the Fantasy Football leagues I’ve been invited too. That was strange for me, because growing up, I was into anything that had something to do with football.

As I was the guy trying to make the Old School Tudor Electronic football game work. So about ten years ago I finally dove into the Fantasy Football craze.

Initially my reasoning for not playing Fantasy Football was because I didn’t believe it represented the actual football being played on the field. Which it doesn’t; but once I realized how the scoring systems worked, I just needed to develop a strategy that would utilize all these years of acquired useless football knowledge.

My strategy has lead to 5 Championships in my past10 years of playing Fantasy Football, in multiple leagues.

The initial league I played in, was made up from a group of former co-workers. Each season we’d all gather in Las Vegas for our annual league draft. It’s always fun to complete the draft in person, while enjoying the piercing jabs from the competitions and endless banter being tossed around throughout the draft. The $250 entry fee is certainly enough to keep our interest for the upcoming 4 months.

Probably the most critical pick would be your choice of QB; often time you are able to get a quality QB late in the draft.

Unless you draft Drew Brees, Arron Rodgers or Tom Brady in the early rounds, you can find a valuable QB in the later rounds. The seventh or eighth round is when you should seriously be looking for that guy. Just as real NFL GM’s are challenged to draft value late in their draft, Fantasy Football coaches/ GM’s must find value in those players drafted in the later rounds as well.

By employing this strategy, you should be able to double up on some talented position players before drafting your QB’s.

LA Sparks Get Their 17th Win

Coming into this game, only one game separated these two teams in the WNBA’s Western Conference. The combination of Chelsea Gray, Candace Parker and LA Sparks fans were eager and ready to welcome the Mercury to town.

“The American King”

Reconnect Blacks to their Motherland

By Lauren Poteat NNPA Newswire Washington Correspondent In an effort to improve ties between the African Diaspora and the Black community in America, Nigerian filmmaker Jeta Amata teamed up with Prince Adah Obekpa, Vanessa Teemsma and Joan McCarthy to make a comedic, yet timely, film titled “The American King: As Told by an African Priestess.”

Obekpa served as an executive producer on the film, while Teemsma and McCarthy assisted as producers.

“There is no better time than now to create a narrative that showcases Africa and Africans in a different light,” said Amata, during a screening of “American King” at the Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage in Northwest, Washington, D.C. “I wanted to make something that would give Americans and, more importantly African Americans, an opportunity to see and understand who they are and why they are who they are…We are all Africans and it’s so important that African Americans, most of all, understand that.”

Using comedy to emphasize the message of strong, cultural appreciation, the film also tackled hard-hitting, social issues including colonialism and poverty—a burden faced by all kinds of people, all over the world.

Akon, the award-winning, Senegalese American music producer, added his star power to the film as the main character, Sebastian. Akon also starred in Amata’s 2012 film “Black November.”

Kenneth Miller, the publisher of the Cleveland Call and Post, collaborated with the NNPA to host the “American King” screening.

After the screening, Miller shared the story about a chance

encounter in 2011 with the producers of Amata’s “Black November” during a boxing event promoted by Don King.

Miller described watching “Black November” as a life changing experience.

“I’ve never had the opportunity to meet Michael Jordan. I didn’t know Michael Jackson. I don’t know LeBron James. I never met Kobe Bryant, but [Jeta] had something that all of the great ones have,” Miller said. “I told him then that, ‘I am going to be with you for a very long time.’”

Miller later traveled to Nigeria with Amata.

“I felt more at home in Nigeria, a place I spent 11 days of my life, than I felt at home when I came back here to the United States of America,” Miller said. “My goal for the rest of my life is to connect to who I am and what I am…Jeta has allowed for me to be able to pursue that wonderful dream.”

Championing Amata’s filmmaking endeavors, Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, shared his thoughts on “The American King” and its overall message.

“The film is a fusion of African and African American flavors, meant to change the way we see each other and the way we relate to one another,” Dr. Chavis said. “I use to live in Angola and I found out that there is no real substitute for getting on a plane or on a boat and actually going over and spending time in Africa.”

Dr. Chavis continued: “The time to embrace one another— the time to embrace Africa—is now and that’s what this film is about.”

“The American King: As Told by an African Priestess,” is set to hit theaters in early 2019.

Josephine Baker Doc Headlines African Diaspora Film Festival

Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor “Streetlight Harmonies,” by Brent Wilson and the documentary “Josephine Baker: Black Diva in a White Man’s World,” count among the highlights of the 12th annual African Diaspora International Film Festival which opens on Friday, August 17 at the Marvin Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The three-day festival, which presents films to diverse audiences and redesigns the Black cinema experience by strengthening the role of African and African descent directors in contemporary world cinema, will feature 16 films that will take audiences in and out of the United States, including eight that will have their premieres in the nation’s capital.

“There’s a lot new this year,” said Reinaldo Barroso-Spech, an educator in foreign languages and Black literature who created the festival with his wife, Diarah N’Daw-Spech, a financial consultant and university budget manager.

The opening night film, “Timeless,” by Ed LaBorde counts as a love story that transcends time from 19th century Ghana to the modern day Caribbean.

Some of the social issues explored in the film are the human trafficking of the slave trade in the past and the present day human trafficking in the Virgin Islands, as well as political corruption and immigration.

Festival organizers also plan to present the premiere screening of the award-winning drama, “The Citizen,” a narrative

about middle-aged African political refugee (Wilson) who seeks Hungarian citizenship.

The film has already earned acclaimed from critics at The New York Times and other publications.

Organizers have also expressed excitement about “Streetlight Harmonies,” a film about doo-wop featuring a who’s who of musicians that trace the evolution of pop music from doo-wop and Phil Spector’s legendary “wall of sound” through Motown, surf music and the British Invasion.= The festival also includes a special program where films depict the lives of a native of one country who moves to another nation like, “African-Americans in Europe,” which features a Josephine Baker documentary by Annette von Wangenheim.

Two other films directed by women explore issues of identity in diaspora communities in the United States.

“The Good Life—or La Belle Vie—by Rachelle Salnave reflects on the cultural crossfire she experienced as a HaitianAmerican growing up in Harlem juxtaposing her parents’ memories of noble family histories with a humble working class reality.

“Life Is Fare,” by Sephora Woldu counts as a cross-cultural film that challenges how patriotism and nationalism are practiced by people of a country, and is inspired by current Eritrean and Ethiopian migration experiences in the United States.

“From its inception, the festival has always showcased great films that explore the black British experience,” Barroso-Spech said.

By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Despite enthusiastic discourse around diversity in film, a report from the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released Tuesday says when it comes to the numbers, little has changed. The most popular movies are still largely the domain of white, straight, able-bodied men, both in front of the camera and behind.

The percentage of female characters with speaking parts in the top 100 films has remained largely unchanged at or around 30 percent over the past decade, according to the report released Tuesday. And in survey of the top 100 films of 2017, a year in which the top three were the female-led “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Wonder Woman,” only 33 featured women in a lead or co-lead. Four of those were from an underrepresented group, and five were over the age of 45.

Women of color are still among the most marginalized, which the report calls an epidemic of invisibility. In 2017, 64 of the top 100 films did not include a single Latina character, 65 were missing Asian females, and 43 were devoid of any black female characters. 78 films were without a female character with a disability and 94 absent of an LGBT female. The report calls it an epidemic of invisibility.

“It was an unprecedented year where you had the top spots at the domestic box office driven by female leads, and yet we find ourselves in another year where almost nothing has changed.”said Dr. Stacy L. Smith, Founding Director of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “In the aggregate, Hollywood isn’t embracing any solution. It's business as usual or embracing the status quo as usual.”

The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has been tracking and

examining the top 100 films every year since 2007 leading to a database of 1,100 films and 48,757 characters.

And while the Time's Up and (hash)MeToo movements have affected every level of the entertainment industry over the past nine months, any statistically significant impact will likely not be seen on screen for another year or more.

“As Time’s Up focuses on safety, equity and dignity, we need to be looking to 2019 and 2020 for the major changes where Time’s Up exerts its influence and we see a shift in hiring practices for the first time,” Smith said. “Until hiring changes, these numbers will not move.”

The report suggests solutions like the “just add five” concept, which advocates for adding five speaking roles for women in every script to achieve gender equity by 2020, or the inclusion rider, which is a contract addendum requiring studios to hire a diverse crew and cast for a project. Frances McDormand popularized the term by mentioning it in her Oscars acceptance speech.

Although many in the industry have embraced the concept of inclusion riders, like Michael B. Jordan, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Paul Feig and others who run production companies, some have criticized the idea saying it is potentially illegal. Smith says that the critics misunderstand the concept and should speak to employment attorneys to understand how to execute it.

“The spirit of the inclusion rider was to get people to realize that the world we see on screen is imbalanced and there are ways to address this,” Smith said. “The solution is to hire differently.

An inclusion rider isn't needed to do that.”

The league office stepped in it, by unilaterally declaring that players who do not wish to stand during the national anthem, should stay in the locker room. The NFL players association had little choice but to force negotiations over that insult.

Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, is a decent guy.

But he stuck his foot in it as well, when he recently announced that the Cowboys had to stand for the anthem and couldn’t stay in the locker room—or else. The league wisely told him to zip it, while the policy was under negotiation and so it goes.

So much of this is a false narrative. Fake news.

Trump dishonestly insists that the players are disrespecting the flag. In fact, the players kneeling during the anthem were expressing a silent protest not against the flag, but against police brutality and the reality of structural racial inequality.

Kneeling before the flag in silent, nonviolent protest is not disrespectful to the ‘Stars’ and ‘Stripes.’ In fact, it’s just the opposite. It is a sign of deference and respect, a call to honor what the flag is truly supposed to represent.

Burning the flag is constitutionally protected, but is a desecration. Burning a cross is a desecration. It is violent. Kneeling before the cross, or during the anthem, on the other hand, isn’t a desecration; it is a call for help.

Colin Kaepernick was and is concerned about Blacks being beaten and killed by police. He kneeled during the anthem to highlight how the values of the flag were being ignored on the streets. He wasn’t disrespecting the flag—he was protesting those who trample its values. He was being a patriot.

Now Trump wants to light the dynamite again. His politics prey and thrive on division. He hopes to divide us one against the other, while his administration rolls back protections of consumers, workers and the environment, allowing corporate lobbyists to rig the rules, with lards of more and more tax cuts and subsidies on entrenched interests and the wealthy.

So, he purposefully peddles the false narrative that the players are disrespecting the flag.

Jones, who is a Trump supporter, isn’t a bad man. Beyond the playing field, beyond contracts, he has been a decent guy. He paid for the funeral of Cowboy great Bob Hayes. But Jones has allowed himself to be turned into Trump’s pawn in this diversion. The reality is that we would not have the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas, were it not for those protesting for their rights.

The victory of the Civil Rights Movement opened the way to a New South. The nonviolent protests and resistance pulled down the old barriers and walls in the South, clearing the way for the Cowboys and the Spurs and the Rockets of the New South, where Blacks and Whites could play on the same team and wear the same colors—where fans root for the colors of their team, not the color of the players’ skin.

Successful protests—at the cost of far too many lives — finally ended slavery and apartheid in this society. We should be honoring the protesters, not distorting their message.

Kaepernick was right to protest what is going on in our streets. He has paid a heavy penalty for expressing his views in a nonviolent and dignified fashion. One of the best quarterbacks in the league, he has effectively been banned, a blatant conspiracy that ought to constitute a clear violation of anti-trust laws.

Kaepernick stands among giants. Curt Flood in baseball and Muhammad Ali during the prime years of his boxing life were also banned, but in the process, they changed sports and the country for the better.

There have always been politicians who profit by appealing to our fears. There have always been politicians who seek to divide us for political gain.

We’ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go to fulfill the flag’s values of liberty and justice for all. The players expressing their views in nonviolent and dignified fashion aren’t disgracing the flag, they are expressing its values.

By The Associated Press BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) – FX is diversifying its offerings, picking up a drama about a cutting-edge tech company starring Nick Offerman, sinking resources into a limited series based in feudal Japan and returning for a fourth series of “Fargo,” this time with Chris Rock.

The network revealed some of its upcoming plans Friday and they include the eight-episode “Devs” by writer and director Alex Garland, who wrote and directed the 2014 feature film “Ex Machina” starring Alicia Vikander. The upcoming TV series is set at a secretive tech firm in San Francisco that may be responsible for a murder.

“Devs” will star “Parks and Recreation” veteran Offerman as the firm's CEO, Sonoya Mizuno, Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny and Alison Pill. It will premiere on FX in 2019.

FX is also rebooting “Shogun” as a 10-episode limited series, which it calls its “largest international scale production to date.”

The series will be based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell that was turned into a 1980 miniseries event by NBC starring Richard Chamberlain.

The plot charts the collision in Japan of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai. The new version will be written by Eugene Kelly ("Westworld,” “Leftovers” and “Boardwalk Empire”) and Ronan Bennett (“Public Enemies,” “Top Boy”).

FX has lured Rock to star in a new season of “Fargo,” set in 1950, which will begin production in 2019. Rock will play the head of a criminal syndicate who has struck an uneasy peace with a rival group - they've swapped sons. A death forces the unraveling of their plans. Longtime “Fargo” show runner Noah Hawley will again lead the creative team.

Motorist, Pedestrian Killed in LA Car-to-Car Shooting, Crash LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A motorist was killed in a car-to-car shooting and then his car rolled over a pedestrian, killing him, Los Angeles police said Tuesday.

The shooter's vehicle struck and critically wounded a bicyclist as it sped away Monday night in the Baldwin Hills area, Officer Mike Lopez said. Investigators haven't identified a motive.

The wounded motorist, 20-year-old Harrison Kristol of Los Angeles, died at the scene, the coroner's office said.

The name of the pedestrian killed by Kristol's car, also a man in his 20s, was withheld pending family notification.

The bicyclist was hospitalized in critical condition, officials said.

DMV Hours Long Wait Times

By SOPHIA BOLLAG Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California lawmakers are seeking answers from the Department of Motor Vehicles about hourslong wait times that have prompted public outcry.

When Assemblyman Phil Ting visited a San Francisco DMV office in his district last month, he said the line snaking around the block looked more like a queue for rock concert tickets than for people trying to renew their licenses.

“I was shocked,” the Democrat said. “What we’ve been hearing are horrific wait times of six or seven hours. That's unacceptable.”

Ting will lead a hearing Tuesday to question DMV officials about what they are doing to reduce wait times.

Lawmakers have given the department millions of dollars in additional funding to accommodate higher demand as Californians update their licenses to comply with federally mandated security upgrades known as Real ID. The federal law was enacted in 2005 in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and requires new ID cards to carry special markings.

After Oct. 1, 2020, airport security checkpoints won't accept non-compliant cards. Californians must apply for new cards in person at DMV offices.

The agency expects to spend almost $70 million and hire more workers in the next two years to process the millions of people who need upgrades.

At the Tuesday hearing, Ting says he plans to ask DMV officials whether the money allotted to the system is enough and whether the DMV is making technical improvements to ensure the Real ID transition runs smoothly.

Assemblyman Phillip Chen is requesting an audit of the department and how it is handling the Real ID changes. The top complaint he's heard from his constituents recently is about the long wait times at DMV offices.

“We want to make sure we’re not putting money into a broken system,” the Diamond Bar Republican said.

The Joint Legislative Audit Committee will weigh Chen’s audit request Wednesday.

To ease the long wait times, the DMV is staffing 60 offices on Saturdays and extending morning hours at 14 offices.
