Maxine Waters Mourns the Passing of Former US Congressman Ron Dellums

“Ron Dellums, a Marine Corps veteran, was one of the most outspoken opponents of the Vietnam War in Congress, and was at the forefront of the effort to educate the American public of war crimes that were committed during the Vietnam War[1]. Ron Dellums was also the first Member of Congress to call for the integration of gay and lesbian Americans in the U.S. military[2]. As a result of his leadership and expertise on issues related to the military and defense policy, Ron Dellums made history by becoming the first African American Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. He was also the recipient of numerous awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from Peace Action, the nation’s largest grassroots peace network, and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Medal for Distinguished Public Service.

“However, one of Ron Dellum’s greatest achievements is one that is also dear to my heart: ending apartheid in South Africa.

As a member of the California State Assembly and a national board member of TransAfrica, one of the most prominent anti-apartheid advocacy groups in the United States, I had the privilege of working with Ron Dellums to fight for legislation at the state and federal level that forced the United States to divest from the apartheid regime in South Africa. As I fought for the 1986 passage of my bill, Assembly Bill 134, which made California the first state to divest its $12 billion in state pension

funds tied to the apartheid regime in South Africa, Ron Dellums was simultaneously championing similar legislation in the U.S. Congress. As a result of a 14-year battle, his historic bill, the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986, gained enough support to not only pass in both chambers of Congress, but to also override President Ronald Reagan’s veto.

“Though he retired from Congress after 27 years of service, Ron Dellums maintained his dedication to his community and was elected mayor of his hometown, Oakland, California, in 2007. During his tenure, Ron Dellums focused heavily on educational initiatives, public safety, and economic growth in the City of Oakland. He is still celebrated for securing $23 million in federal stimulus funds for the City of Oakland through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act under President Barack Obama – second only to Chicago, Illinois, the president’s hometown.[3] “The incomparable Ron Dellums -- a passionate drum major for peace, inspiring community leader, effective politician, and lifelong public servant -- left an indelible mark on the City of Oakland and in the hearts of so many people across this country who also love him. Vanderbilt Unvsty Investigating Racist Emails NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Vanderbilt University is investigating a racist message that was sent to e-mail lists of students, faculty and staff.

The university’s NAACP chapter complained in a tweet about Monday evening’s e-mail blast. The university tweeted early Tuesday that the “deeply disturbing’’ email, “containing racist language and promoted white supremacy,’’ did not come from an official Vanderbilt account.

Officials say Vanderbilt’s technology department is trying to find the source. They recommended recipients delete the email without responding to it.

The university says “the fact that the communication was NOT an official Vanderbilt University email or correspondence does not diminish the pain that it has caused.’’

Sergeant Who Alleged Ridicule Over Genetic Test Settles Case

HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) – A police sergeant who says he was ridiculed on the job in western Michigan after a genetic test showed he was part black has settled a lawsuit over his treatment for $65,000.

The agreement obtained by The Grand Rapids Press using Freedom of Information Act request says Hastings police Sgt. Cleon Brown will be on paid administrative leave until Oct. 31, when he’ll resign.

After the Ancestry.com test, Brown says he was subjected to racial taunts including someone placing a black Santa Claus figurine in his Christmas stocking at the police station and officers whispering “Black Lives Matter.’’

City Manager Jeff Mansfield says the settlement allows Hastings “to focus its efforts and resources on more productive endeavors.’’

The city earlier said Brown started the trouble by joking about the results.

Protesters to Call for Arrest of Minneapolis Police

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ Activists and the family of a black man fatally shot by Minneapolis police are preparing to protest a prosecutor’s decision not to criminally charge the officers.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman declined Monday to charge Officers Justin Schmidt and Ryan Kelly, who shot 31-year-old Thurman Blevins after chasing him into a north Minneapolis alley last month.

Blevins’ family argues Blevins wasn’t a danger to the officers while running away. They plan to call for the officers’ firing and arrest at a Tuesday afternoon protest in Minneapolis.

The officers were responding to a 911 call of a man firing a gun into the air. Freeman said the officers’ actions were justified because Blevins was armed, disregarded police commands and pointed a gun at them.

A New Generation of Freedom Fighters:

Black Youth are Taking Up the Mantle of Leadership in America

By Jeffrey L. Boney NNPA Newswire Political Analyst Without being given much direction, Black youth have seemingly taken matters into their own hands, relative to their future here in America, by strategizing, organizing and mobilizing.

Whether on social media or through community activism in the streets, Black youth are proactively pushing the agenda forward and forcing society to no longer ignore many of the issues that have impacting the Black community for decades. Many have decided to take an even greater step towards bringing about change, by getting involved with politics.

These bold efforts to express themselves in ways that are progressive and substantive have given Black youth a clearer vision for their future and an even greater sense of purpose that has given them an alternative to doing things that are detrimental to their future.

Because many of their Black predecessors dropped the ball and failed to effectively protect them from the many dangers and pitfalls they have had to face without adequate support, it forced this new generation of Black freedom fighters to become more knowledgeable about things.

Black youth have chosen to stand up and fight for themselves, in spite of the lack of collective support they have received from the Blacks who came before them who were beneficiaries of the civil rights struggle.

That is why the Black Lives Matter movement was birthed and gained so much traction.

Black Lives Matter was formed by a small remnant of Black youth who were sick and tired of being sick and tired.

This energized group of young, African Americans wanted to do something about the issue of police brutality, as well as other critical issues that were negatively impacting the Black community, particularly Black youth.

Black Lives Matter isn’t the first example of young, African Americans creating movements and platforms to allow their voices to be heard and making a difference. The hip-hop community was formed because many Black youth wanted to express themselves and needed an outlet to talk about the things they were dealing with in their respective communities and facing in this country. Just as it has been since inception, hip hop has become a steady tool used by Black youth to influence society and make a difference.

While there are a myriad of things currently impacting Blacks in America, the advent of social media has given Black youth the necessary access to news and information to keep them up-to-speed on everything they need to know.

Prior to social media, many young, Black people were disconnected from news and politics and had limited interest in things such as reading newspapers, watching news channels, listening to talk radio or keeping up with major current events and social issues online.

Now, through social media, Black youth have the ability to get this information in real time and in a way that is interactive and enlightening to them. This has caused many young, Black people to become more engaged in and educated about issues that

truly impact their daily lives.

As America finds itself in the midst of a crucial midterm election, young, African Americans have chosen to get even more involved and are looking for more ways to make a difference, versus looking for leadership and assistance from older Blacks who many believe have abandoned them or from traditional mainstream Black institutions where they feel they don’t belong.

Black youth have found themselves searching for answers and looking for quality leadership to help them navigate through these tumultuous waters called life in America.

Getting involved in community activism and politics may be the tools that they need to make more of an impact. Black youth need direction.

This new generation of freedom fighters needs to be mentored and not ignored. This new generation of freedom fighters needs to be encouraged and not berated. This new generation of freedom fighters needs to be praised and not overly criticized. Many Black

youth are tired of having to figure things out on their own, but have come to the realization that they are living in a country that does not seem to value their Black lives. They are fighting for their lives and seeking relevance the only way they know how— through using the tools and resources they have at their disposal and by getting engaged by any means necessary.

Since desegregation in the 1960s—and the election of President Barack Obama, decades later— some Blacks bought into the false pretense that America had transitioned to a postracial society and that they would no longer be affected by the things their predecessors had to endure.

Fast forward to 2018, and we see that many of the Black youth who were never taught the realities of racism or never forced to experience the sting of segregation, are seeing a very different America than the one they grew up believing existed. In many ways, especially when looking at statistics and the current climate in America, Black people are facing many of the same issues they had to deal with during segregation. Sadly, in many cases, it has become far worse.

If Black youth are shown the importance of politics, the effectiveness of government and the impact of voting, they will do those things and be excited about being a part of them.

The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), which represents over 200 Black-owned media companies across the U.S., recognizes Black youth as an important part of the future of America. Through their efforts to register 5 million new, Black voters before the midterm elections in 2018, tapping into the energized spirit of Black youth in this country to accomplish that goal has been a primary focus of the group and one they believe will make a huge difference come November.

NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. says that he is encouraged today by the tenacity and courage of Black youth to challenge White supremacy, hatred and bigotry.

“The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) takes note, with a sense of pride, in the renewed activism and self-determination of today’s Black American youth leaders,” Dr. Chavis said. “The struggle for freedom, justice and equality is intergenerational. Each generation is obligated to wage the next stage of the struggle with a relentless courage to win more victories and to improve the quality of life of our families and communities throughout the world.

Dr. Chavis continued: “As one of the seasoned elders of the Black Freedom Movement in the U.S. and throughout the African Diaspora, we want the world to know that Black Lives Matter is a welcomed youth-led movement for social change across America.”

Encouraging Black youth to step up and get involved is an important step, but the role that Black parents and responsible adults in the Black community play in supporting Black youth is extremely critical and will help them effectively deal with the social ills and issues they are facing in America today. Until Black youth are shown that, however, it will fall on deaf ears.

Congress Must Stop Family Separation Pass the Keeping Families Together Act

Like many Americans, the treatment of children and families at the border has shaken me to my core.

San Diego-based U.S. District Court Judge Dana Sabraw has essentially said to stop defying the courts and reunite these families.

The deadline to reunify parents with children under 5 was July 10th, and the deadline to reunify children five and older is July 26th. The Administration has asked for an extension saying it would need more time to reconnect parents and children in certain cases. They have requested an extension to the deadline, but the court is still monitoring and it has yet to be granted.

It’s no secret that Donald Trump views immigrants with disdain. He has called Mexicans “rapists” and referred to immigrants as “animals.”

The Trump Administration has embraced nativist dog whistles from day one.

Nowhere is this clearer than in the shameful “zero tolerance” policy pursued by President Trump, which has separated families, locked kids in facilities, and traumatized innocent children.

Families come to this country seeking asylum. They undertake grueling, dangerous journeys in the hope that America will provide safe harbor from the violence that they are fleeing.

Some are escaping domestic abuse, others have come to our shores to save their families from gangs. None expect to have their children ripped from their arms when they finally reach safety.

Two weeks ago, I travelled to McAllen, Brownsville and Los Fresnos, Texas to visit detention centers and see the situation firsthand. I witnessed terrified kids sleeping on cold concrete floors. I saw scared toddlers separated from their families. I heard from mothers unsure if or when they would see their children again. Some parents didn’t even have a phone number to reach their children.

This is not the first time in America’s history that we have separated young children of color from their parents. It happened during the Middle Passage.

It chills me to the bone to know our government would repeat this dark history of jailing children and splitting up families.

Before the abolition of slavery, children of Black slaves were sold by owners at will. This was a constant fear for enslaved families—that their beloved children would be sold away, never to be seen again.

Monroe Incoming Board Chair-elect, WomenHeart WomenHeart (the first and leading voice for the 48 million American women living with or at risk of heart disease) story begins in February of 1999, when three women, united by heart disease, formed an organization that was destined to become a lifeline for women across this nation. And at the same time, in February of 1999, a young mother in Charlotte, N.C. suffered a stroke while she was pregnant with her second child. Fortunately, she suffered no long-term deficits, but was horrified by her temporary left side paralysis.

Five years later, this size six, 36-year-old woman would suffer the first of three heart attacks just five days after giving birth to her third child. It was May of 2004. She was misdiagnosed for an entire week despite an EKG showing an acute myocardial infarction. She sought treatment six of seven days before someone finally listened.

On that sixth night, she laid on her bed with one foot on the ground for the entire night, afraid to relinquish her physical attachment to earth, because she felt her body shutting down. She prayed. And she vowed that if she lived, she would raise her voice so that no other woman suffered her fate.

After this week-long heart attack, she returned to the emergency room. She was rushed by ambulance to another hospital and taken to emergency bypass surgery. She had five coronary artery dissections, and she underwent an emergency quadruple bypass. Her heart was so remarkable that the surgeon literally held it in his hand and had someone capture a photograph.

Eight months later, that same young mother learned that her bypass grafts had shut down. Her rejection fraction was only 21 percent. She was advised to call a family meeting, get her affairs in order. Her prognosis was grim.

It was then that I became intimately acquainted with her.

I marveled at her strength and resolve as we walked this journey together. She became a force of nature, moving heaven and earth in her fight for life. She underwent a repeat bypass, had part of her heart cut off, 15 laser holes drilled in her heart, a pericardial window cut in the sac around her heart, three defibrillator implants, stents, angioplasty, and then some.

She’s flatlined four times, and suffered from congestive heart failure. She’s experienced more heart issues than generations of a family. But I am happy to share with you that she is still with us. This is my story, and WomenHeart has been a lifeline for me.

I became a WomenHeart Champion in 2007 and it changed my life. The sense of sisterhood and friendship are truly priceless. WomenHeart is the nation’s only patient-centered organization solely dedicated to advancing women’s heart health through education, advocacy and patient support. At its core are WomenHeart Champions—women living with heart disease—who are trained to be community educators, support network leaders and advocates for women’s heart health in the communities in which they live.

WomenHeart is a friend to many WomenHeart Champions like me. Today, I speak to audiences of women living with heart disease and medical professionals. I’m a little scarred and battle tested, I am no longer 36, I am no longer a size six, but I am still here. And I am determined more than ever now, to keep the vow that I made 14 years ago in May of 2004, so that not another woman suffers my fate. I, along with WomenHeart, am fighting for every heart with the same tenacity and vigor that saved my own.

As an African American woman, I know that this disease impacts women differently than men, especially minority women. Heart disease claims the lives of nearly 48,000 African American and 21,000 Hispanic women annually. Which is why I am asking other women of color who are heart disease survivors to join the fight and become a WomenHeart Champion at the 2018 WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium. It’s the nation’s only free volunteer program that trains women with heart disease to be community educators and support network coordinators in their communities. They are real women living with heart disease, who share their stories and important messages about heart health—all in the mission to save lives. Join me.

This policy was such a source of national shame that in 1988, the U.S. government signed legislation formally apologizing and providing restitution to interned JapaneseAmericans.

Instead of learning from our painful history, the Trump Administration is repeating the mistakes of our past and inflicting more trauma on families seeking safe harbor from the violence and abuse they left behind.

And now, rather than proposing real solutions, the Trump Administration wants to lock immigrant families up indefinitely.

Let me be clear: jailing children is unacceptable under any circumstances.

Ending the policy of separating families—but forcing kids to live in jail for months on end—is just replacing one form of child abuse with another.

These human rights violations must be addressed immediately.

I have asked UN Secretary-General Anthony Guterres to send observers to report on the conditions at detention facilities and to ensure the thousands of children who have been separated from their parents are reunited.

I’m also asking for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Sessions established the inhumane zerotolerance policy—knowing the trauma and distress it would cause families seeking asylum—and Secretary Nielsen implemented it and lied to the American people. The stunning immorality on display from both of these officials should preclude them from ever serving in public office again.

I am proud of Judge Sabraw’s decision to bar the separation of migrant children from their parents, ordering them to be reunited within 30 days.

Now, we need Congress to pass the Keeping Families Together Act to stop this from happening again and to mandate U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents’ complete child welfare training on an annual basis.

Above all, Congress must get serious about fixing our broken immigration system. Our immigrant brothers and sisters—and most of all, children—must be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

6Yr Old Author’s Debut Book Sells Over 10,000 Copies

Kennedy O’Neal, 6-year old author of Adventures of Super Kennedy

Fredericksburg, VA — Kennedy O’Neal has a lot to be proud of these days. After her recent appearance on Good Morning America, sales of the Faith Baptist School kindergartener’s debut book, The Adventures of Super Kennedy: Saving and Investing, have surpassed more than 10,000 copies. Kennedy and her dad, Chris O’Neal, released the book in mid-March to a positive reception – both locally and nationally.

“It truly is a blessing on the outcome of the release of the book and how it is inspiring others to invest in their children’s future,” her father stated. “The feedback has also been amazing.

The book has been featured in libraries and schools. In fact, a teacher from our local private high school is using it as a teaching tool for their students. We really anticipated the book to be more geared to children, but adults are picking up the book and reading it, too.”

The book, which is geared toward 5 to 14-year olds, is

inspired by Kennedy’s real-life passion for earning and saving money as well as investing it. Her fascination with shiny coins and “the green” started while in diapers. In her debut book, the 6-year old morphs into “Super Kennedy” to teach kids creative ways to save and earn money on their own. Once she has enough money saved up, with her parents help, she buys an undesirable house to fix up and collect rent. According to Kennedy’s father, the book has motivated young readers to think more seriously about their own financial future.

“Children have been inspired to start their own businesses.

For example, parents have told us that their kids have started a lemonade stand, selling jewelry and cutting grass in order to save for toys and houses!” stated Chris. “A parent told us that after reading the book to their kids they are doing chores around the house and saving and stashing their money.”

Since the book’s release, Kennedy was recently featured as a guest of Steve Harvey and Taylor Thomas’ Tots to Teens Expo in Prince George’s County in Maryland in May. Kennedy and her family have also made it their mission to take part in local literacy events to discuss the importance of saving and investing money at a young age. Presently, she’s touring local schools and talking to students about the importance of saving. She is currently looking for additional schools to add to the tour.

“The goal of the book is to impress upon kids that they can save and invest, too. They do not have to be an adult to start investing. Start now!” stressed Chris.

As for what’s next for the 6-year-old? Her father says she is hoping to turn the book into a cartoon and even release a second book focused on financial freedom. According to her father, her ultimate dream is to eventually appear on The Steve Harvey Show and Ellen.

“Her dream is to talk about her book on her two favorite shows. It’s her hope to inspire other kids,” her father stated.

Vowing to Seek Legislation After GAO Report

Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor In a blistering response to a new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that revealed federal agencies spend very little advertising dollars with minority-owned businesses, D.C. Democratic Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton said that she would work with minority publishers to press her colleagues in Congress “to demand greater spending on minorityowned outlets…to reach minority audiences that most traditional outlets do not.”

Holmes Norton said that she requested the GAO report to learn more about the disparities in federal advertising contracts. “[The GAO report] showed, as we expected, that the federal government has a long way to go to ensure equal opportunities for minority-owned news outlets,” Holmes Norton said. “As the nation’s largest advertiser, the federal government has an obligation to provide advertising opportunities to news outlets and media companies owned or published by people of color.”

The 41-page report issued, last week, revealed that over the past five fiscal years, federal government agencies spent $5 billion in advertising, but just $327 million of that went to minorityowned businesses.

Black-owned businesses netted just $51 million—about $10 million per year over the five years covered in the new report.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association President (NNPA), thanked Holmes Norton for her support. The NNPA is a trade group that represents more than 200 Black-owned media companies and newspapers that reach 20 million readers,

Civil Rights Museum Tells Authentic Stories

By Freddie Allen Editor-in-Chief, NNPA Newswire In the early morning hours of January 10, 1966, civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer Sr. was jolted from his sleep, as members of the Ku Klux Klan surrounded his house just north of Hattiesburg, Miss. Dahmer, a Black land-owner, had been actively working to register Blacks to vote and, in some cases, he even paid their “poll” taxes. It was enough to earn a Black man a death sentence in the South.

The Klansmen bullets ripped through the darkness splintering wood and shattering glass as they fired on Dahmer’s house; one of them hurled a Molotov cocktail through the window; the Klan wanted to burn Dahmer and his family alive.

As smoke and flames engulfed his home, Dahmer grabbed his shotgun and blasted his way out, creating a diversion as the rest of his family fled into the woods. Later that day, Dahmer died from smoke inhalation at an area hospital.

A few days later, Dahmer’s voter registration card arrived in the mail.

“These are the kinds of stories we talk about in the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum,” said Pamela Junior, the museum’s director.

“We tell people all the time: Museums are living and breathing places.”

Junior lamented that, oftentimes, the history of the Civil Rights Movement is told through the narrow lens of a few key figures, like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. She said that it was important that people know that Mississippi was ground zero for the Movement; the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum helps to tell the stories of the people that were there.

“What we want to do is make sure that the stories are told authentically,” Junior said. “We have our own native son, Medgar Wiley Evers. We have Fannie Lou Hamer, June Johnson, Owen Brooks…local people who made up the Movement.”

Junior said that it was also important to show that civil rights leaders were ordinary people, yet they still managed to have a significant impact on the course of American history.

Junior continued: “So, to see something so powerful that these regular, poor people did to make things happen in the state of Mississippi is awesome.”

The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum opened on December 9, 2017. The Clarion Ledger reported that the Dahmer family donated a truck that had been shot during the 1966 attack to the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

The museum promotes a greater understanding of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi and shares the stories of the movement that changed the world.

A press release that described the museum said that visitors can witness the freedom struggle in eight interactive galleries that show the systematic oppression of Black Mississippians and their fight for equality that transformed the state and nation.

The press release continued: “Seven of the galleries encircle a central space called ‘This Little Light of Mine.’ There, a dramatic sculpture glows brighter and the music of the Movement swells as visitors gather.”

Each museum gallery highlights a specific sub-topic or period. Gallery 1 defines civil and human rights; Gallery 2 focuses on the Civil War and Reconstruction; Gallery 3 highlights civil rights activists and shares the stories of a Mississippi movement that changed the world; Gallery 4 peels back the layers of a segregated society; Gallery 5 showcases the sacrifices and the successes of the 1960s; Gallery 6 takes a deep dive into the Freedom Summer and local movements in Mississippi (19631964); and Gallery 7 tells the story of Black Empowerment from 1965 to the early 1970s.

Junior said that, through the civil rights museum, the ills of Mississippi are finally on the wall.

“We’re taking the bandage off of the sore,” Junior said. “We don’t allow it to fester anymore. We let it breathe, so that healing can continue.”

The last gallery, Junior said, was designed to spark conversations about how all races can move forward together.

“Martin is gone. Medgar is gone. All of these people are gone that were at the center of the movement, at the forefront.

We believed in them and trusted in them. These people are gone,” Junior said. “So, what we want to do is teach people that they are the movement.”

Junior continued: “We are the movement; it’s up to us to do the work.”

Gallery 8 is titled “Where do we go from here?” and features mirrors with quotes from Mississippians who made incredible sacrifices to improve the lives of others.

McCarty, who “quit school in the sixth grade to go to work, never married, never had children and never learned to drive,” according to The New York Times, eventually donated nearly her

entire life savings—$150,000—to the University of Southern Mississippi to fund scholarships for Black students. “[McCarty] said that, ‘if you want to be proud of yourself, you have got to do things you can be proud of,’” Junior said. “So, I want people to live by that mantra.”

Dorothy Leavell, the chairman of the NNPA and publisher of the Crusader newspapers in Chicago and Gary, Ind., called the results of the report shameful. Leavell added that she would call for legislation to address the disparities; she also said that she plans on requesting meetings with members of Congress to further explore the matter.

In an interview, last week, Dr. Chavis called on Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chairman Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus “to forcefully raise their voices of discontent and reaffirmation of the demands for equity, for justice, for fairness and end to this kind of systemic refusal to treat African American-owned and Latino-owned businesses along with others in a just, fair and equitable manner.”

Dr. Chavis added that the report revealed the consequences of systemic racial discrimination in both Republican and Democratic administrations when it comes to federal advertising spending.

Dr. Chavis continued: “It’s time for all of us to respond and to act. There should be legislation introduced in Congress immediately to rectify this gross systemic inequity.”

Jermaine Dupri Announces So So Def 25th Anniversary Tour

By JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr. Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) _ Rap mogul Jermaine Dupri will celebrate his groundbreaking record label So So Def with a multi-city anniversary concert tour.

Dupri told The Associated Press on Monday that The So So Def 25th Anniversary Cultural Curren$y tour will feature himself, Xscape, Da Brat, Jagged Edge, Bow Wow, Anthony Hamilton, Bone Crusher, Youngbloodz, Dem Franchize Boyz and J-Kwon.

The 11-city tour starts Oct. 14 in Washington, D.C. and ends in Los Angeles on Nov. 2. A show will also be held Oct. 21 in Atlanta, where Dupri was raised.

Dupri said he wants the tour to remind people how influential So So Def Recordings has been to the culture of hiphop and R&B music.

He said the artists connected to the label are like “cultural currency’’ - people of great value to the world of hip-hop.

“I feel like with my artists and even myself, people don’t pay enough attention to how much we mean to the culture and how much So So Def meant to breaking the South and making people pay attention to Atlanta,’’ he added.

Dupri founded the label as a teen. Under his guidance, So So Def helped develop and promote the entire genre of Southern hip-hop in the 1990s. It rose to success through music acts including preteen stars Kriss Kross and Bow Wow, female rapper Da Brat and R&B group Jagged Edge.

Dupri was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June. He earned a Grammy for best R&B song in 2005 as one of the songwriters on Mariah Carey’s hit “We Belong Together.’’

The rapper-producer called the anniversary tour a “blessing.’’

“This is perfect timing’’ he said. “This is the 25th anniversary of a black-owned record company that put out multiple artists and enough artists to do our own tour. We’re blessed basically.’’

Los Angeles Chargers Training Camp

By Cameron Buford whatsgoodinsports.com As the Chargers embark on their second season in the Los Angeles market, they are in position to have a season that will capture some hearts and minds of Los Angeles football fans for years to come. After their previous off season was inundated with changes including relocating to a new city, to the indoctrination of a new Head Coach. Though they do have a very talented team, The Chargers have suffered multiple injuries to key players in recent seasons. However, they are good enough to have their sites on winning their division and hosting a playoff game.

I was fortunate enough to attend their first couple days of training camp. In those couple days I wanted to touch base with a few players from see how they would implement their rookies onto this veteran team. Their first couple draft picks should strengthen their already potent defense. With their first pick of the 2018 draft Chargers selected Florida State Safety Derwin James and in the second round they drafted Linebacker Ucheena Nwosu. Each of these players are expected to have an immediate impact on this defense.

James is a versatile playmaker from Haines City, Fla.. His aggressive style of play should solidify the back end of the defense.

I give the Chargers an A for this pick! Player of the year nominee Casey Hayward says of James, “he brings that swag; he’s going bring that toughness; he’s someone that wants to come down a knock your head off, (as the receiver) coming across the middle… he’s one of those Florida State guys!” By pairing James with that ferocious pass rush, his big play ability should make for an even scarier defense.

With the second pick of this past draft the Chargers drafted talented, local, athlete Nwosu, who is a former USC Trojan and was raised just south in Los Angeles. His athletic ability will pair nicely with Bosa and Ingram, and that is a formidable trio. In the words of teammate Melvin Ingram, Ucheena “he fits is good.”

“He has bright future in the league.” Ingram continues to say emphatically, “he’s a football player!” He added about Ucheena, “I see a playmaker; someone who can help this ballclub.”

Casey Hayward went on to say that Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram “makes his life a lot easier!” Because “he knows the ball has to come out faster, when those guys come (on a blitz).” He recalls that, “a couple of picks last season came of Joey. Hitting the ball before it get them (receiver).”

Barring injury there is no reason this veteran Chargers shouldn’t be competing for an AFC Championship this season.

As they have a nice mix of veterans and youth on this team. That veteran experience should rub off on their younger teammates, as they prepare for a late playoffs push.

It’s that time again where sports bars get filled up with football fans each Sunday throughout to the remainder of the year. The Chargers ideally should be playing into next season. I am expecting the Chargers to have more consistent season than the previous year; thought I will share my official predictions, in a few weeks. Last year the focus was on welcoming in a New Head Coach and changing the mindset, focus and direction of the team.

One might think they’d be interested in keeping changes to a minimum and go into the season with some cohesion. However, coming off winning their division last season the Rams were not going to leave well enough alone.

By following the mantra ‘if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse,’ with the signings of notable Free Agent additions Ndamukong Suh, Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib certainly make the Rams better. Pairing either one, or two, of these guys would be impressive… the Rams were able to add all three pro bowlers to their already formidable defense. Additionally, they traded for and signed speedy wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

Yes, the Rams had a tremendous off season, now it’s time to take it to the field. As Rams opened up training Camp at UCI, I conducted multiple interviews to the gauge the players enthusiasm for this coming season as well as various topics from football and their activities giving back to the communities they’re from. As so often those stories get overlooked.

Ndamukong Suh, who prefers to be called Suh, says about going into his first season with Rams “I’m excited and feels this sky’s the limit,” for them”. He also states that “he is looking forward to playing all positions in the D Line. Nose, tackle and the five technique! He continued to say, “the one thing I’ve learned playing on an elite defense, is no particular guys has a particular has any position, they can play all of them.” I was impressed with Suh, he appears happy and comfortable and looking to thrive in this new system.

In my brief conversation with Jamon Brown, he talked to me about how the playoff loss from last season “put a chip on their shoulder!” Which was interesting to hear, but most importantly he talked to me about his foundation, the Jamon Brown Foundation. He went on to tell me about the Charity weekend they had for the Jamon Brown Foundation, which “their mission is to impact the lives of those who struggle with violence poverty including youth and young adult homelessness.” This was an impressive message to hear from the big fella!

As a football fan, I was excited the see Sam Shields back on the football field. I sincerely thought he retired due to the multiple concussions he suffered early in his career. He and I talked about what it’s like for him to be back playing football, why he decided to come back and why the Rams. Sam Shields is a cool dude, I’m certain he’ll make the team, and I’m confident he can make plays given the opportunity.

On day two of the Training Camp I was able to catch Sean McVay at the podium, spoke about multiple topics including the Anthem policy, tackling in practice along with the challenge of avoiding complacency. “For the most part, we’re never really going to tackle in practice.” As they want “to limit the risk of injury.” To avoid complacency, “we need to go to work every single day, earn it and find a way to consistently, get that 1 percent better every single day! In addition, McVay mentioned in his own thorough fashion, “good communication (within the team) is the best way to avoid any issues, in regard to the anthem policy.” It is always a pleasure to talk to Sean as his answers always provides an angle you may have not previously thought about.

On the podium, we were also able hear Marcus Peters as he spoke about playing for Wade Phillips and his foundation. “With Coach Wade, he for us to play fast and physical.” Off the field Peters mentioned the he’s apart of Fam First Foundation. Which they hosted their “’It takes a Village Carnival,’” for third year now, as his way of giving back to the community that gave him so much and made him who he is.

We have already listed the Rams as our top storylines of the off season, a few weeks ago. After winning their division last season, the Rams have only gotten better with their off-season acquisitions that bolster one of the league’s top defenses and bring a better route runner to one of the league’s highest scoring offense.

Rams fans has so much to e excited about for this upcoming season.

Now that Training Camp has begun across the league, fans all over can dust off their rally rags and stock up on face paint cause the real games are right around the corner. I am expecting the Rams to have a better season than last year; my

PAC 12 Media Day

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer This Year’s Pac 12 Media Day gave a great preview of the up and coming football season. A lot was discussed at Hollywood and Highland. The pre- season favorites voted on by 42 media members are North Division Washington (10-3) with (40) first place votes followed by Stanford (9-5) 1first place vote and Oregon( 7-6).

The South has USC (22) on top with UTAH (7-6) in second (14) and Arizona(7-6) in third.

“Were expected to win games and that’s never changed,” said Huskies head coach Chris Petersen. “Because other people think we are going to win games it doesn’t really change our mind –set” The Huskies return top notch QB in Jake Browning.

Browning the PAC 12 player of the Year 2015 has thrown for over 9,100 yards and 78 touchdowns in three seasons in Seattle.

USC and Clay Helton n are trying to win back to back Pac12 titles. After ending the season with a disappointing loss in the Cotton Bowl to Ohio state.

“I like this team for what is It’s a team and a unified team”, said USC head coach Clay Helton. “This team has won the PAC12 title and a Rose Bowl now let’s go do something special.

Let’s compete for a National title”

Helton is in his third full season as the Trojans Coach has a 27-10 overall record.

James has his work cut out for him in Los Angeles. He’ll join a young team that added some interesting pieces — Lance Stephenson, Rajon Rondo, Michael Beasley and JaVale McGee — during the offseason but a squad that has a long way to go before it can challenge the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors.

“What my expectations are for the team, we don’t have any right now,” James said. “But we’re definitely going to be better than we were the previous year. I think there’s going to be months where we’re really good, there’s going to be months where we’re not so good and that’s just going to come from familiarity.”

Unlike his previous forays into free agency, James didn’t waste any time making a decision. Once his eighth straight appearance in the Finals ended with a sweep against Golden State, James met with his family and agent before agreeing with the Lakers on the first day.

“I did my due diligence after the season on the pros and cons of a lot of different teams, including the Cavs, including Philadelphia, including Houston and Los Angeles,” James said.

“It wasn’t as quick as it may seem. It just wasn’t as July 9 as it was before. After talking to my family more than anybody, I felt this was the next step in my journey.”

This trip will take him thousands of miles from home. But as James reminded students, family and friends in the closing moments of his remarks, he’ll never be far away.

“No matter if I’m playing in Los Angles or not, Akron Ohio is always home for me,” he told the crowd.

“Listen, I don’t close the chapter on anything or close the book on anything,” James said when asked if he would return to Cleveland to end his career. “But hopefully I can sit there one day and watch my jersey go up into the rafters, that’s for sure.”

When James announced on July 1 that he was leaving the Cavs, Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert, who famously ripped him when he left the first time, said the franchise would retire “the famous #23 Cavs jersey one day down the line.”

LeBron James Joins Other Celebs who Launched Schools

By SALLY HO and KANTELE FRANKO Associated Press With the launch of a public school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, LeBron James has joined a long list of celebrities who have sought to leave their mark on education centers in the U.S. and around the world.

The NBA star, who recently left the Cleveland Cavaliers and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, was on hand Monday to welcome children to the I Promise School, built in a partnership with the LeBron James Family Foundation and Akron City Schools. The school launches with a group of third- and fourthgraders and plans to expand to serve first through eighth grades by 2022.

James has said the school, with a non-traditional schedule and year-round programming, can have a lasting impact for children facing the same kind of challenges he faced during a rough childhood.

Here is a look at some of the other celebrities who have been involved in creating schools, sometimes with mixed results: DEION SANDERS The NFL Hall of Famer co-founded a multi-campus charter school called Prime Prep Academy in Texas in 2012. He coached there and served in other capacities but had a rocky relationship with administrators and was twice fired and rehired. The school’s enrollment slid amid financial and administrative problems, and it closed in early 2015.

SHAKIRA The singer has funded at least a half-dozen schools for children in her native Colombia over the past two decades with her foundation, Pies Descalzos, which means Barefoot in Spanish.

Those institutions included a $6 million school she dedicated in 2009 in her hometown, Barranquilla, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. She said then that her foundation’s work is about “breaking the myth that quality education is the privilege of the few.’’

MAGIC JOHNSON The Lakers legend announced in 2011 that he was partnering with for-profit EdisonLearning Inc. to lend his name and business skills to promote dropout recovery centers.

The effort expanded to at least 17 Bridgescape schools in six states within a couple years with the goal of reducing school dropout rates in urban areas. The company and Johnson parted ways after five years, but EdisonLearning says four Bridgescape Learning Academies still operate with the Chicago Public Schools.

James led the Cavs to an NBA title in 2016, ending Cleveland’s 52-year championship drought, and to four straight Finals — a run he admitted he didn’t think was even possible when he returned in 2014 after four seasons in Miami.

James didn’t offer many details about what prompted him to sign with the Lakers, but the lure of playing for one of the most successful franchises in all of sports was more than intriguing.

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer Being a Walter Camp All-American is special. It’s the oldest All-American team there is having originated in 1890.

Stanford’s Bryce Love was named to last years first team as a running back after racking up 2118 yards for the Cardinal. So when they opened up this year PAC-12 media day in Hollywood Love was a shoe-in to come along with head coach Dennis Shaw.

Love still missed media day this time due to the classroom.

Made possible by a grant from the “I really wanted to be there and represent the university,” Love to a publication. “But I decided I just wasn’t able to make it happen this year. Based on other commitments trying to graduate in December required me to take more classes during the summer.”

Love would have been a first round pick and made NFL millions. He decided to play another year at Stanford and keep taking classes there.

LOS ANGELES, July 26, 2018 ---- Best Start West Athens recently held Summerfest to provide children and families in the West Athens community of Los Angeles a day of fun and resources to help parents and caregivers prepare their children for a better future.

“In order to connect with the community, we want to increase child engagement and provide fun and safe places for families,” says Crystal Pitts, member of the leadership board at Best Start West Athens. “There is a high crime rate in our community and kids don’t have things to do in the summer.

Best Start West Athens goals are to encourage community safety, green spaces, and connecting children with parents. Summerfest accomplishes our mission and offers parents with resources to build stronger families.”

The event was held at Helen Keller Park and cosponsored by First 5 LA, the County of Los Angeles California, C.H.A.N.G.E.S., Tiff’s Power Place, and Phenomenal Angels.

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (DCA), Ranking Member of the Financial Services Committee and a leading advocate in Congress for HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, and treatment, introduced a resolution (H.Res. 1004) in the House of Representatives yesterday in honor of National Clinicians HIV/AIDS Testing and Awareness Day, which is celebrated every year on July 21st. The resolution is cosponsored by 23 Members of Congress.

“I am proud to have supported National Clinicians HIV/ AIDS Testing and Awareness Day since its founding in 2008,” said Congresswoman Waters. “This important day is an opportunity to highlight the critical role that doctors, nurses, dentists, and other clinicians play in HIV/AIDS awareness, testing, and treatment efforts. By encouraging their patients to be tested for HIV, doctors and nurses can enable infected individuals to access appropriate medical care and begin taking action to avoid spreading the virus to others,” said Congresswoman Waters.

Congresswoman Waters is a leader in the fight against HIV/ AIDS. She is continuing her efforts to expand the Minority AIDS Initiative, which she established as chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1998. On March 19th of this year, she sent a letter to the House Appropriations Committee requesting $610 million for the Minority AIDS Initiative in fiscal year 2019, which was signed by 85 other Members of Congress.

Furthermore, she reintroduced the Stop AIDS in Prison Act(H.R. 1882), a bill to require the Federal Bureau of Prisons to develop a comprehensive policy to provide HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, and treatment for inmates in federal prisons; H.R. 1882 is cosponsored by 37 of her colleagues.

Benedetto, founded the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in 2001 in New York, naming it after the legendary singer, who was Bennett’s best friend. The public performing arts high school in Queens, which gets support from Bennett’s nonprofit group, admits students based on auditions. It boasts a high graduation rate, with alumni who have gone on to study at a variety of top arts colleges.

WILL SMITH The actor-rapper and his actress wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, founded the private New Village Academy in the Los Angeles area in 2008. Pinkett Smith said she was moved to start the school after developing home-schooling programs for their own children, but it was embroiled in controversy over rumors the curriculum used instructional methods developed by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. The couple and school leaders denied any connection to the church. The school reportedly closed in 2013. Representatives for the couple couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

ANDRE AGASSI The tennis great ran the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy for at-risk youth in his hometown, Las Vegas. In 2016, the academy was turned over to an out-of-state operator, and it has been rebranded Democracy Prep at Agassi Campus. The school change was compelled by a Nevada state initiative that targeted low-performing schools. The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education also is tied to an investment fund that helps charter school operators get access to buildings and facilities around the country.

SEAN “DIDDY’’ COMBS The performer and entrepreneur added another role in 2016 as founder of the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School in the New York neighborhood where he was born. He said it was a dream come true to create the school, which is part of a group of schools aimed at supporting historically disadvantaged students.

PITBULL The rapper, whose real name is Armando Christian Perez, has been a celebrity ambassador for the Sports and Leadership Academy, which has locations in Miami and Henderson, Nevada.

He’s appeared at ceremonies for the schools, which focus on sports medicine, marketing, business and management. The academy is overseen by the Sports and Leadership Academy Foundation, and he is not a financial donor.

MADONNA The pop star founded the charity Raising Malawi in 2006 to help vulnerable children in that impoverished southern African nation. Its work has included helping to build schools there. It also funded a children’s wing at a hospital that opened last year.

California Urges Resistance to Census Citizenship Question

By KATHLEEN RONAYNE Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ California's top elections official is urging the state's residents to oppose a Trump administration plan for a citizenship question on the 2020 census.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla on Tuesday launched an online portal for Californians to submit public comments through the federal registrar opposing the question.

He and other officials warn a citizenship question will discourage immigrants from participating in the decennial count. The census count determines each state's representation in Congress and how much federal funding it gets.

California and other states have sued the federal government to block the question from appearing on the 2020 census.

The Trump administration has said the U.S. Justice Department requested the question for better enforcement of voting rights laws. But newly released documents show U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross requested it.
