Schumer Unveils Clean Cars For America Climate Proposal A Transformative Plan to Reduce Number of Carbon-Emitting Cars on the Road, Create Jobs, and Accelerate Transition Net-Zero Carbon Emissions

Continued on page A3

Washington, D.C. – Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), along with Democratic Policy and Communications Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (DMI), Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Ranking Member Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), a member of the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis, today unveiled the Clean Cars For America Climate Proposal, a bold new initiative to accelerate the transition to net-zero carbon emissions by mid-century—a target scientists say we must reach to avoid the most devastating effects of climate change, but are currently off track to meet—by making clean cars and charging infrastructure accessible and affordable to all Americans. Leader Schumer’s Clean Cars for America proposal has a broad coalition of support, from such stakeholders as leading environmental groups like the Sierra Club, the NRDC, and the League of Conservation Voters, as well as labor unions like the United Auto Workers and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and large auto companies like Ford and General Motors. The initiative would incentivize the transition to clean vehicles by providing significant discounts for clean vehicles when trading in a gas-powered vehicle, establishing a new grant program to states and localities to ensure all Americans have access to charging infrastructure, and providing robust incentives for manufacturers to build new factories or re-tool existing factories. The plan would result in 63 million fewer carbon-emitting cars. The plan is estimated to create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs in the United States. The Clean Cars For America Climate Initiative would accelerate the critical transition to net-zero carbon emissions by mid-century by making electric vehicles and charging infrastructure accessible to all Americans, regardless of where they live and work, and would firmly establish the United States as the global leader in electric vehicle and battery Continued on page A3

John Conyers Dies at 90 By Stacy M.Brown NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent
Former U.S. Congressman John Conyers, whose 15year fight to pass legislation that would make Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a federal holiday, has died. He was 90. The longtime Michigan Democrat represented what is now the state’s 13th Congressional District (which includes parts of western Detroit) for more than 50 years. Conyers resigned in 2017. Conyers was born in Detroit in 1929. He was elected to Congress in 1965 and immediately became a forceful voice in the Civil Rights Movement, co-sponsoring the Voting Rights Act of that same year. Conyers was the first African American to chair the powerful House Judiciary Committee and helped spearhead the 1994 Violence against Women Act. Conyers and 12 other African American members of the House of Representatives founded the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971. “We always knew where he stood on issues of equality and civil rights in the fight for the people,” Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who now represents Conyers’ district, tweeted. “Sad to hear of the passing of former Congressman John Conyers,” the Rev. Al Sharpton stated. “He worked with us on many civil rights cases as Chair of the House Judiciary Committee and helped lead the fight for the Martin Luther King [Jr.] Holiday.” “Most of us from Michigan loved our congressman. He was idolized and was absolutely an icon. Not only was he an icon of the civil rights movement but we looked to him for leadership. This is a massive loss. All of us in business, the clergy, the community, respected, admired Continued on page A3

Confederate Monument Protest

PITTSBORO, N.C. (AP) – Police in North Carolina say they’ve arrested two people after a “physical altercation” at a protest over a Confederate statue slated to be removed. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday it arrested Calvin James Megginson and Timothy James Osborn on charges related to the altercation. Both were released and are due in court next month. A pro-Confederate group is trying to stop removal of the statue, which has been stationed outside the county courthouse in Pittsboro since 1907. The county’s plans to remove the monument have sparked protests and counter-protests that have resulted in multiple arrests in the past month.

University Apologizes After Tweet on Diversity COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – The University of Missouri athletic department has apologized and removed a tweet intended to promote the NCAA’s “diversity and inclusion week” after receiving complaints it was racially insensitive. The original post showed a graphic with four photos under the words “I am.” The white athletes described their career aspirations in the graphic, with one saying, “I am a future doctor.” The quotes attributed to a black athlete and athletics employee were “I Am an African American Woman” and “I Value Equality.” Former Missouri quarterback and Kansas City attorney Corby Jones, who is black, told The Kansas City Star’s editorial board that he was “outraged” over the words that were chosen. The athletic department said in a statement the “intent was to provide personal information about our students, but we failed.”

One southbound lane reopened Tuesday morning but traffic cameras showed little improvement for drivers.
