Trojans Put Together Solid Game in Week 6

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer The USC Trojans put together one of its best solid performances with a 38-10 PAC-12 win against the Oregon State Beavers.

Sophomore QB Sam Darnold completed 23 of 36 for 316 yards and three scores as the Trojans 5-1 (3-1-PAC-12) bounced back after a 30-27 loss to Washington State last week.

Ronald Jones II had 79 yards on 12 carries as USC amassed 512 yards of offense. Other bright spots for the USC included Tyler Vaughn catching a 37 yard pass from Darnold to open the scoring.

Also freshman tight end Josh Falo hauled in thirty yard pass both were the first career touchdowns for each.

Vaughn finished the day with 5 receptions for 68 yards.

Marvin Tell III had 10 tackles 3 solo to led the defense. Chris Hawkins and Christian Rector had seven each.

OSU quarterback Darrell Garretson completed 16 of 29 for 197 yards .Next up the Trojans takes on UTAH at the Coliseum Saturday 5:00 PM kick-off on PAC-12 Network- USC tops the PAC 12 South ahead of the Utes. NOTES: Trojan backup QB Matt Fink had a 51 yard run for a TD in his first game action this season. Megabank Bill Will Protect Consumers

By Freddie Allen Editor-In-Chief, NNPA Newswire In an effort to rein in financial institutions that have track records for harming consumers, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) recently unveiled The Megabank Accountability and Consequences Act (H.R. 3937). The new bill would require, “prudential banking regulators, such as the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Federal Reserve Board, to fully utilize their authorities to shut down megabanks that repeatedly harm consumers.”

The original co-sponsors of the Megabank Accountability and Consequences Act are: Representatives Michael Capuano (D-Mass.), Al Green (D-Texas), Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), John Sarbanes (D-Md.), Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), and Jamie Raskin (D-Md).

During a press conference to announce the bill, Waters called a report that detailed Wells Fargo’s egregious consumer abuses, “truly eye-opening.” The report not only described how Wells Fargo defrauded millions of consumers by opening fake credit card and deposit accounts in their names, it also revealed illegal student loan servicing practices; unlawful mortgage lending practices, such as overcharging veterans for refinance loans; and how bank representatives sold customers auto insurance policies they didn’t need.

In prepared remarks, Waters said that Wells Fargo “made a routine practice of ripping off and preying on their customers, in a seemingly never-ending avalanche of scandals in which service members, minorities, homeowners, small business owners and many other consumers have been targeted and abused by the bank.” The report also noted that fines imposed on the bank did little to deter the abusive practices.

Waters said that her bill would, “also enable the Consumer Bureau, states and local government authorities to petition the prudential regulators to hold a hearing on whether a megabank engaged in such consumer abuse.”

will now be accountable to Congress and the American public, and have to regularly determine that the megabanks are doing what they are supposed to do—serving their customers and not ripping them off.” The bill defines a megabank as “global systemically important bank or GSIB.” Waters said that federal regulators will have 90 days to review the “megabanks” they supervise that operate in the United States. If the financial institutions have engaged in a pattern of law violations, Waters said that the federal regulators can, within 120 days of enactment, begin to “wind down the bank” and stop the offending executives from working at other banks.

“This process is subject to judicial review, and the federal prudential regulators must testify before Congress to discuss their findings,” said Waters.

The bill also requires that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issue regulations that more closely define the practices that violate federal consumer protection laws that should receive stricter penalties.

“It is time we truly hold megabanks that demonstrate a pattern of harming consumers accountable,” said Waters. “These institutions must no longer be allowed to abuse hardworking Americans.”

Parents Deserve a Choice Black Driver Shot

by White Officer Family Sues CLEVELAND (AP) _ The family of an unarmed black driver fatally shot by a white policeman in suburban Cleveland has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.

It alleges in a lawsuit filed Monday the city of Euclid (YOO’-klihd) is responsible for policies and practices that led to Luke Stewart’s March death, which inflamed the city’s racial tensions. Euclid police, the police union and Officer Matthew Rhodes haven’t responded to messages seeking comment.

Rhodes says he responded to a report of a suspicious car, jumping inside as the just-awakened Stewart tried to drive away. Rhodes says he struggled with Stewart to control the moving car and then shot Stewart because he feared Stewart would crash it. Autopsy results showed cocaine and other drugs in Stewart’s system. Primas Program Manager, NNPA/ESSA Public Awareness Campaign I was recently approached by a father of a student from Ann Arundel County, Maryland that was disappointed that his son was unable to attend his neighborhood magnet school; his son met all the requirements to become classified as a magnet student. Upon inquiry, administrators informed the father that the feeder school system did not permit his child to attend the desired school, even though the campus was less than two miles away from their family home. This was especially upsetting to the father, because he purchased the home 10 years ago with that specific school in mind. The school prescribed by the feeder school system is 12 miles away from his home.

Great Schools, the leading national nonprofit organization devoted to assisting parents in unlocking educational opportunities for their children, gives the prescribed feeder school a two out of five stars rating, compared to the four stars given to the school initially selected by the father. Realizing that the school’s ratings may lead to a misguided conclusion, he and his wife toured the school to get a first-hand look. They were equally disappointed with the school climate and physical condition of the building.

His son is a recipient of the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. The administrators were adamant that the prescribed school would meet his son’s educational needs; despite their insistence, the father was never convinced.

After failing to make progress with school administrators in Ann Arundel County, he made the hard decision to enroll his child in a local non-magnet school, which has only one Advanced Placement

(AP) course and limited opportunities in advanced courses.

My question to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is this: Why is it that, despite your push for “school choice,” parents are still being directed to lower performing schools with poor school climate, inadequately prepared teachers, and failing test scores?

This is contradictory to the intention of the Every Student Succeeds Act. It is the opposite of the policies you and the Trump Administration say you support. The options offered to this parent were inadequate and did not allow him the opportunity to ensure his child will receive a quality education. Furthermore, the feeder school system, in this instance, was completely ineffective.

Instead of fixing education, it appears this administration has allowed states and local school districts to re-segregate, provide lower quality education to children of color and sentence our children to academic underachievement. This is not how ESSA was designed to operate.

Thankfully, this parent did not accept less for his child. Other parents may not have the ability to stand for their children. ESSA was supposed to provide a high-quality education to all children. Let’s make sure no child is faced with choosing between potential social isolation for a higher quality education or convenience at the expense of academic achievement.

California’s Gun Related Homicide Rate is Up SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ New state figures show the rate of people killed with guns in California went up last year, reversing years of decline that began in 2008. There were 1,368 gun-related homicides in 2016, up by about 200 from 2014, when such killings fell to a historic low, the California Department of Justice said. That’s a 15 percent increase in the gun-related homicide rate, which adjusts for population changes.

The state figures show guns were used in 72 percent of California homicides last year, while the number of homicides using other weapons fell slightly from 2015 to 2016.

The spike in gun-related homicides reflects a national trend, and it comes as gun sales go up statewide and nationwide, the Sacramento Bee reported. “Certainly since the Sandy Hook (school shooting in 2012), there has been a large number of gun sales, and I think that the fear that there may be some gun control that might restrict gun buying has hugely made a difference in gun sales,’’ said Jennie Singer, an associate professor in the division of criminal justice at California State University, Sacramento.

“The more guns that are simply available, physically on the streets and in the community, the more gun violence there will be,’’ she said.

Criminologists caution about reading too much into a few years of homicide increases, especially after decades of declines. Some law enforcement officials say Proposition 47, which passed in 2014 and reduced many nonviolent property and drug crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, contributed to the rise.

KKK Leader awaits Hearing on Charlottesville Gun Charge CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) _ A Baltimore Ku Klux Klan leader who authorities say fired a gun during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville is in custody in Virginia awaiting a court appearance this week.

Richard Wilson Preston is charged with discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school on Aug. 12, the day of the rally that descended into violent chaos.

The American Civil Liberties Union said it provided law enforcement officials with a video of the shooting before Preston’s arrest. It shows a man yelling and firing a handgun one time while standing on a crowded sidewalk. No one was struck.

The 52-year-old Preston told The Baltimore Sun he is being misrepresented as a violent racist. Preston says went to Charlottesville as a member of a militia intending to protect rally participants.

California Bullet Train Staff Recommend a German Firm SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ The agency overseeing California’s bullet train project recommended Friday that a U.S. subsidiary of a German rail company design and operate a train segment from the Central Valley to Silicon Valley in its early stages.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority’s board of directors will vote Oct. 19 on whether to approve a $30 million contract with DB Engineering & Consulting USA. It’s the U.S. arm of rail giant Deutsche Bahn AG, which is owned by the German government.

Chinese, Italian and Spanish companies also competed to lend California expertise in building the United States’ first high-speed train. California’s quest to connect Los Angeles to San Francisco in under three hours, a priority for Gov. Jerry Brown, has been plagued by repeated cost increases, delays and staff turnover. The agency has been searching for a new chief executive for months. The $64 billion project is now slated for completion by 2029. Construction is underway on a 32-mile segment between Madera and Fresno counties.

The agency hopes bringing on a company with experience in the high-speed train industry will ensure the design phase and early operations of the train go smoothly. Deutsche Bahn operates

more than 620,000 miles (1 million kilometers) of train tracks and transports 6.5 million rail passengers per day, according to its website. DB Engineering & Consulting has worked on rail projects across the globe, including in Europe, China and Australia, according to its website.

If approved, DB Engineering will help design stations, thinking about needs such as parking and food. It will set up a ridership model and evaluate the best means of collecting revenue, from hiring ticket-collectors to allowing for mobile ticketing. It will also help the authority market and brand the rail project, according to the contract.

The contract cost is $30 million over six years. Some rail board members questioned at a June meeting whether that price was realistic for the scope of the project. After the initial design phase, DB Engineering would help with track and train testing, and run the train in its early stages from the Central Valley to Silicon Valley. The state would then competitively bid again for a long-term operator, according to the contract.

Deutsche Bahn did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A cruise line career that delivered him to a life in South Florida. And a lottery ticket he bought at a gas station. They are the factors in Miguel Pilgram’s life that bring him now to Sistrunk Boulevard, a corridor the county calls the “historical heartbeat of Fort Lauderdale’s oldest black community.’’

Pilgram, who won a $52 million jackpot using quick-pick numbers in 2010, is investing some of his winnings in Sistrunk in a way not seen in years. Pilgram said he wants to breathe new vibrancy into the boulevard, building on its rich history as a place that nurtured civil rights leaders and pioneers and attracted people to its lively nightlife and music.

“I was raised in a similar environment,’’ Pilgram said. “There is a need, and in my mind, an obligation, to invest there.’’

The 48-year-old Coral Springs resident and father of two is rolling out plans for a New York Subs and Wings restaurant with a Memphis Blues club upstairs, on one side of Sistrunk.

On the other, his company, The Pilgram Group, plans a retail complex with a bank, Jamba Juice and other shops on the ground floor. On the second floor, a performing arts center will offer below-market rates for instructors of dance, arts, and music.

“Do you know how impactful that is for a child from any of these areas, who is like me, to come out and see people actually painting in the window, or performing on a saxophone?’’ Pilgram said. “That creates a fire under most children. Now they say, wow, anything out there that’s creative, I can be. Whatever artist I want to be, I can be.’’

Back in Memphis, Pilgram said he had role models who shaped him.

His father was hard-working. His mother was a devout Seventh-day Adventist who had him in church several days a week.

When he got older, he joined the Navy. Then he embarked on a career in the cruise line industry, climbing to a top position, and learning to work with large budgets like the one now under his own name.

In his world travels, he said he visited cultures where people marveled at his “beautiful’’ brown skin. He said he wants children in Fort Lauderdale’s historic black community to experience that feeling of value as an African American.

But he also saw what can happen when private investment is lacking, he said, and government comes in to rebuild. In Memphis, he said, his grandmother’s apartment was azed, and the residents displaced. He feared it could happen here, and said that’s one thing that drew him to Sistrunk Boulevard.

‘It could be you’ Every week, Pilgram spent $20 on lottery tickets. But he wasn’t good about checking them.

Then one night he ran to the Shell gas station in North Bay Village where he bought his tickets. He left chicken cacciatore and his girlfriend at home, and was in a hurry. He just needed a bottle of wine.

David, the gas station employee, was insistent. Someone had bought the winning Florida Lotto ticket at that gas station, he told Pilgram, and “it could be you.’’

Pilgram got the tickets from his car, and one of them hit: 15-16-20-32-45-50.

David started “jumping up and down,’’ Pilgram said. “$52,000?’’ Pilgram thought he heard through David’s Spanish accent. No, not thousand. 52 million.

Sistrunk Boulevard hasn’t had a nightclub with live music like Pilgram plans in at least 25 years, City Commissioner Robert McKinzie said. Back then, the property Pilgram bought, at the southeast corner of Northwest 15th Avenue and Sistrunk, was the buzzing Night Owl lounge.

The boulevard was once vibrant. Now, vacant lots and empty buildings sit on many of the blocks. The city, a major landowner on Sistrunk, has worked for years to encourage private investment. McKinzie said the pieces are finally falling into place, and he’s “excited’’ about Pilgram’s role in it.

“Now that we are reviving it,’’ McKinzie said of Sistrunk Boulevard, “his plan and concept fit right in.’’

Next to Pilgram’s planned performing arts center, on the north side of Sistrunk between Northwest 14th Way and 14th Terrace, the city recently agreed to spend $10 million building a new YMCA where the old Mizell Center is. Development has finally come to public land at Sistrunk and Northwest 7th Avenue, a grocery store and shopping plaza that took decades to come to fruition. A developer is now proposing micro-residential units and retail directly across the street, McKinzie said.

Longtime members of the community around Sistrunk have heard for years that an economic revival was right around the corner. Standing in his crossing guard gear at Pilgram’s building, Charles Zeigler, 67, said he believes it.

“It’s coming,’’ he said after Pilgram told him his plans. “It’s a process.’’

The restaurant and blues club _ a renovation of the original 1940s building _ will be open in about a year, if all goes according to Pilgram’s plan. He purchased the property in May. His vision next to the Mizell Center, where he’s still working to purchase multiple pieces of property that span the block, could come to fruition in Spring of 2019.

Winning was ‘confirmation’ The Sistrunk investment isn’t his only endeavor. Pilgram is working on a clothing line of men’s shirts, has other real estate dealings, bought a condo at Fort Lauderdale beach to renovate and make his home, and is renovating a two-story building at 107 SW 6th St., next to his office, just down the street from the Broward County Courthouse. It will open in the coming months as a New York Subs and Wings restaurant and jazz lounge Outside his office, the license plate of his black BMW reflects what’s on his mind: “AMB1SHN.’’ He said he feels an urgency that many people don’t. When he was in his late 20s, Pilgram intervened when a man outside the blues club he managed in Memphis was being beaten and robbed. Pilgram chased the man, who pulled out a gun and shot him. When he reflected on his survival, Pilgram said he felt a conviction that he was going to have a “positive global impact.’’

Though he’s often called lucky, Pilgram said he doesn’t believe in luck. He didn’t know what the numbers on the winning ticket were, saying he never really looked. Rather, he felt that winning was “confirmation’’ from his Creator, he said, after treating people “with such integrity and honor my whole life.’’

Lottery winning history is a mixed bag. Many winners have seen their lives pulled apart, their winnings sapped. Not so for Pilgram. “It’s been 1,000 percent positive,’’ he said. “Whatever you are before you come into success, you’re going to be more of that when you get there. . The only thing you require more of is discipline, and the Navy gave me all of that I would ever need.’’

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor A recent panel discussion hosted by members of the Congressional Black Caucus, showcased the importance of an education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The panel discussion was held during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF) Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. Moderated by former NASA engineer Aisha Bowe, the co-founder of STEMBoard, the panel included STEAM ambassador and Patcasso Art LLC founder Patrick Hunter; Quality Education for Minorities CEO Dr. Ivory Toldson; Johns Hopkins chair and Surgeon in Chief Dr. Robert Higgins; and INROADS, Inc. President and CEO Forest T. Harper.

Congressman G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) kicked off the conversation, which was focused on increasing opportunities in STEM careers for underrepresented youth.

“The STEM field is important to our country, it’s critical to jobs in the 21st century—jobs that make the big bucks,” Butterfield told the excited students from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and Carver Technology Early College High School, who participated in the session. “To succeed, we need to draw from the best in our community.”

Butterfield continued: “The lack of African-Americans in STEM means that many of our best minds are not included.”

In 2016, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and Carver Technology Early College High School formed a partnership with Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and the University of Maryland at Baltimore for a P-TECH program that offers health science degrees in areas of concentration like health information technology, respiratory care, or surgical technology.

The program creates a school-to-industry pipeline for students in STEM fields.

Eugene Chung Qui, the principal at Dunbar High School, said the visit to the CBCF event excited his students, who are enrolled in STEM courses.

“Being that our focus and the mission of the school is to push our students into STEM fields, this is an excellent opportunity for the children to be able to talk with and ask questions of such an esteemed panel,” Chung Qui said.

Another panelist, Tamberlin Golden of General Motors, noted the company’s passion for STEM. “Technology, right now, is disrupting everything in the industry,” Golden said. “Now, people are looking for connectivity, autonomy, electrification, and convenience. We have to monitor thoroughly how we manufacture our cars.”

Tamberlin continued: “If you want to make a good wage from ‘Day 1,’ you want to go [with STEM]. GM has been very invested in this and we want to partner with many organizations.”

A report released, earlier this year, from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economics and Statistics Administration revealed that there were nine million STEM workers in the United States in 2015.

About 6.1 percent of all workers are in STEM occupations, up from 5.5 percent just five years earlier, according to the report.

Employment in STEM occupations grew much faster than employment in non-STEM occupations over the last decade—24.4 percent versus 4 percent, respectively—and STEM occupations are projected to grow by 8.9 percent through 2024, compared to 6.4 percent growth for non- STEM occupations.

STEM workers command higher wages, earning 29 percent more than their non-STEM counterparts.

Further, nearly three-quarters of STEM workers have at least a college degree, compared to just over one-third of non-STEM workers.

The report also revealed that STEM degree holders enjoy higher earnings, regardless of whether they work in STEM or non-STEM occupations.

According to the Commerce Department, HYPERLINK “http://www.esa.doc.gov/reports/stem-jobs-2017-update” a STEM degree holder can expect an earnings premium of 12 percent over non-STEM degree holders, holding all other factors constant.

“When I was in high school, I was a truant and I was unfocused, because my parents were going through a nasty divorce and I just wanted to go hang out with my friends,” said Bowe, an aeronautical engineer and entrepreneur who manages multi-mil-

lion dollar defense contracts and private-sector technology clients.

“I started with pre-algebra,” Bowe shared, then speaking directly to the students she said, “We want you to understand that in entering STEM, you’re entering into an unlimited field.”

Will Gary, IN Have a Shot at Amazon HQ

Gary, Indiana, a predominately Black city, that has struggled with business closures, soaring unemployment, poverty, foreclosures and depressed property values for decades, could be seeing a dramatic turnaround so stunning that it would be an urban miracle. All it would take is for one hungry, high-profile corporation seeking to expand with few limitations and an economically-starved city coming together to hammer out a business deal that would transform both entities forever.

Gary is willing, but does Amazon Inc., one of the largest retailers in the world, believe that the underdog city can truly be the “Magic City” once again?

Amazon Inc., a Seattle-based, mult-billion dollar retailer, set off a bidding war on September 7 with plans to build “HQ2,” a $5 billion facility that would be so big, that it would employ 50,000 employees, with many positions paying, on average, $100,000 annually.

The employee estimate is 65 percent of Gary’s population of 76,424. It could wipe out the city’s high unemployment and trigger an unprecedented economic boom in Gary’s business and housing industries. With huge tax breaks and Gary’s vacant swaths of real estate, international airport and close proximity to Chicago and major highways, the opportunities for Amazon to grow and increase could be endless.

However, big cities are jumping at the prospect of landing Amazon, too. Even though, Gary is the smallest and perhaps least competitive of them all, the city may offer Amazon a tremendous opportunity to earn greater respect and name-recognition for turning around an underdog that has suffered since it was deserted by Whites when the city elected its first Black mayor, Richard Gordon Hatcher, in 1968.

They are big dreams that could turn around Gary in ways the city’s last four mayors have been unable to do. And, the move could address Indiana’s racial and class divide that left Gary’s predominantly Black residents lagging behind other residents in the state.

Gary’s current mayor, Karen Freeman-Wilson, a two-time Harvard graduate, is used to fighting uphill battles as the city’s leaders. She has pulled out all stops to get Amazon’s attention.

On September 17, Freeman-Wilson turned heads after taking out a small advertisement in The New York Times on the second page of the business section. The ad, which was laid out in the form of a 579-word letter, is written from the perspective of a “person” or the collective voice of Gary, Indiana.

While the letter details Gary’s “tough times,” it also highlights Gary’s strengths.

The letter urges Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, to consider the city’s strengths, including the Gary/Chicago International Airport, new businesses and the port authority. Gary’s proximity to two major highways, the I-90 and the I-94, are also cited as strengths; about 20 percent of the city’s residential property and half of its commercial property are vacant.

“And land? Jeff, I have all the land you need,” the letter reads.

The ad also includes Freeman-Wilson’s email address and cellphone number. According to one news report, the city paid about $9,500 for the advertisement and plans to submit a formal bid to Amazon by October 19.

“We believe that the natural assets of Gary and (northwest Indiana), coupled with the positive Indiana business climate and the amenities of the Chicagoland market, make us competitive,” Freeman-Wilson said in a recent email.

Lately, Gary has been on a roll in luring businesses to the city. In July, the city snagged deals with two Illinois companies, Alliance Steel Corp. and HMD Trucking. Both companies plan to build new headquarters in the city that will generate a combined total of 600 jobs.

Luring Amazon’s HQ2 facility may be Gary’s toughest battle to date.

As of September 29, eight major cities, including New York, Chicago, Dallas, San Diego, Cleveland, Louisville, St. Louis, and Detroit reportedly will submit bids for Amazon’s new facility. Several cities in Indiana’s Boone County are preparing their bids, but all eyes are on Indianapolis, where Mayor Joe Hogsett is making the case for the retailer to move to his city.

“Indianapolis continues to receive national attention as a rising tech hub, helping to drive innovation and growth for local and global businesses,” said Hogsett’s spokeswoman, Taylor Schaffer. “That’s why we are very excited to engage with state leadership and Amazon to encourage the growth of their current successful presence in our city.”

Cities are pulling out all the stops for Amazon; so far, Indiana’s governor has declined to publicly support Gary’s bid.

In Illinois, Governor Bruce Rauner and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel have publicly put their differences aside to put together a “single comprehensive proposal” for the Amazon HQ2 headquarters. Rauner and Emanuel’s deputy mayors and several city and state officials visited Amazon’s main headquarters in Seattle recently to survey the company’s massive 8.1 million square foot facility.

While Rauner backs Chicago’s bid for Amazon’s new headquarters, Holcomb isn’t saying whether he support Gary’s bid. Holcomb said he wants Indiana to get the headquarters, but he hasn’t specified what city, although there is speculation that he wants Indianapolis to get the facility.

In a statement, Holcomb said, “Indiana has a tremendous opportunity to be seriously considered in this process. We are doing what Amazon has asked us to do: coordinating efforts with all interested regions of the state to put our best bid forward. I’ve called on the Indiana Economic Development Corporation to lead this collaborative effort that will culminate with a bid submission that includes local and state incentives as well as recommended best sites.”

In Indiana, there has always been concern that state Republican lawmakers have allowed Gary and its economy to deteriorate without offering much help. Many residents still remember when state officials did very little to slow White flight in the city after Indiana’s General Assembly passed legislation exempting only Lake County from the state’s “buffer zone” law, which prohibited incorporation in areas within three miles of Gary and larger cities. Without the buffer zones, White residents helped Merrillville become an official city in 1971, after years of unsuccessful attempts.

Freeman-Wilson acknowledges that her bid is “far-fetched” and may not be as good as Chicago’s offer. As part of its requirements, Amazon said it prefers to be near a metropolitan area with more than a million people. The company is also looking for a friendly business environment.

Amazon officials said the company would also consider urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent, which many Gary residents don’t have, although there is potential for training. However, Chicago’s large technical workforce may commute to an Amazon headquarters in Gary, but this won’t benefit the housing or job market in Steel Town.

Founded in 1994, Amazon is one of the world’s largest Internet companies. 2017 Discover The Unexpected Journalism Winners

Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and Chevrolet recently recognized the achievements of eight students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. that participated in the 2017 Discover The Unexpected Journalism Fellowship program.

The class of 2017 DTU journalism fellows included: Alexa Imani Spencer and Noni Marshall from Howard University; Kelsey Jones and Taylor Burris from Spelman College; Jordan Fisher and Tiana Hunt from Clark Atlanta University; and

Ayron Lewallen and Darrell Williams from Morehouse College.

The eight fellows were recently rewarded for their intrepid, diligent work in the Chevrolet-backed program that provides students from HBCUs scholarships and summer internships at NNPA member, Black-owned newspapers.

The aspiring journalists and media professionals worked with The Washington Informer, The Atlanta Voice, The Carolinian and The Louisiana Weekly to create print, digital and social media content for the publications.

“This is a joyous occasion,” said hip-hop pioneer MC Lyte, the national spokesperson for the DTU journalism program and the master of ceremonies for the award reception held at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA, a trade group that represents over 200 Black-owned media companies, said that it’s vital that the Black community, especially Black publishers, educate young people about the the importance of the Black Press.

“We have a responsibility of raising a new generation of freedom fighters and we have, over the past year, discovered the unexpected,” said Chavis, noting that the 190 year-old Black Press has enjoyed a partnership with General Motors, the automakers behind the Chevrolet brand, that has lasted more than 40 years.

Chevrolet’s Diversity Marketing Manager Michelle Alexander said that the company has vowed to continue the DTU journalism program.

One of Fisher’s most memorable stories for The Atlanta Voice was an interview with a sea lion trainer, after a video of a 700-pound sea lion pulling a little girl into the water off a pier in Vancouver, British Columbia went viral. “I learned authenticity can go hand-in-hand with passion,” said Kelsey Jones, who received a lot of attention for her Atlanta Voice pieces on West End development near downtown Atlanta.

Noni Marshall and Alexa Imani Spencer both received the State of the Union Award at the reception for their work covering politics and other issues for The Washington Informer.

“The people I’ve connected with not only made me a better woman, but a better journalist,” said Marshall, who teamed with Alexa to write several exciting stories including a feature on how “News One Now” host Roland Martin had issued a call to action to address the critical financial state of HBCUs. “I was surprised when I was accepted into the program,” Spencer said. “The truth is, I didn’t have much confidence in my journalism, but that changed on ‘Day 1,’” she said, noting that Denise Rolark Barnes, the publisher of the Informer, assigned her a story about a young man who had been accepted to 14 of the 16 colleges he’d applied for.

Washington Informer Editor D. Kevin McNeir pushed Alexa, late into the night, to turn the story in, she said, adding that, “the article was published the next morning on the front page.”

The Live on Air Award went to Tiana Hunt and Darrell Williams. Hunt penned a story in August in The Louisiana Weekly about Williams’ dreams of being a creative director, while one of his signature features was about the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, which he said should be in every neighborhood across the country. “I’ve discovered so much of the unexpected with great mentors and great people,” Williams said.

Meanwhile, Hunt said the DTU journalism program helped her to see how much hard work and dedication pays off.

“I can honestly say, I ‘discovered the unexpected,’” Hunt said.

Ayron Lewallen and Taylor Burris received the Entertainment Reporting Award for their work interviewing celebrities and other high-profile individuals. “This program taught me that being a journalist is more than interviewing celebrities,” said Burris, who wrote a fascinating story for The Carolinian about Nita Key Enrichment, the first Black music enrichment company in North Carolina. “I’ve become stronger than ever and it means that I have to be prepared to advocate for my community.”

Lewallen, who blogged for The Carolinian about how his Detroit immersion trip changed his mindset, said he had always been big on ideas, but being a DTU fellow was about more than just big ideas.

“I had to dig deep,” said Lewallen. “I will continue my path toward becoming a broadcast journalist and I will never forget what everyone in this program has taught me.”

ESPN Suspends Anchor for Breaking Social Media Rules

By PAT EATON-ROBB AP Sports Writer HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - ESPN suspended anchor Jemele Hill on Monday for two weeks for making political statements on social media.

Hill, an African-American co-host of the 6 p.m. broadcast of “SportsCenter,’’ received backlash last month after referring to President Donald Trump as a “white supremacist’’ in a series of tweets that referenced the president’s comments about a deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Trump later suggested that NFL players be fired for not standing during the national anthem. In tweets on Sunday, Hill targeted Jerry Jones after the Dallas Cowboys owner stated that players who disrespect the flag would not play for his team.

Hill suggested on Twitter that fans who disagree with Jones should boycott the team’s advertisers and not buy the team’s merchandise.

“Cowboys have a huge national following,’’ she wrote in one of a series of tweets. “Lot of black & brown folks are Cowboys fans. What if they turned their backs on them?’’

She clarified Monday she was not calling for an NFL boycott.

ESPN said in a statement Monday that Hill had acknowledged “letting her colleagues and company down’’ with the Trump tweet.

“In the aftermath, all employees were reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such actions would have consequences. Hence this decision,’’ the statement said.

Hill had called the president “a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.’’ She wrote that he was “the most ignorant, offensive president of my lifetime.’’ She called him a bigot and said it was the height of white privilege to ignore his white supremacy because it wasn’t a threat.

“Well, it’s a threat to me,’’ she typed.

Hill did not immediately reply to a request for comment on her suspension.

Before she was suspended, Hill responded Sunday to a Twitter follower who suggested that NFL players would learn a lesson about “getting fired for not doing what your boss requires you to do.’’

“Because if we did everything the boss said, Americans would still be dying of tuberculosis in factories,’’ she replied.

NBA AllStar Game Changes

Couple the most athletic guys in sports with an exciting game and you end up with, what arguably is the most exciting sport. The NBA All-Star weekend traditionally has long been the most exciting All-Star game amongst the four major sports. Whether it’s been apathy, fear of injury or lack of competitiveness amongst players, the All-Star game has lost its luster in recent years.

The Rookie vs. Sophomore game which is played on Friday night has become more exciting than the Sunday night game largely because those young NBA players are playing for name recognition. The events on Saturday night continues to be the most anticipated of the weekend’s events, as it boasts a collaboration of NBA and WNBA talents, an agility course to test the ball handling abilities of the players, the 3-Point Shooting competition, and the ever-popular Slam Dunk Contest.

Even though there remains a great deal of excitement surrounding the NBA’s All-Star weekend, the All-Star game itself has become little more than a glorified scrimmage. Hence the NBA has recently adopted changes that may bring a much needed change to the Sunday All-Star game.

The NBA has chosen to spice up the 2018 NBA All-Star game by altering their typical format. The fans and coaches will still be selecting the players who will participate in the game as they have in the past, though the two top leading vote getters will become team captains and they will choose their teammates from the pool of players who were voted to play in the All-Star game. Each team will have a total of 12 players regardless of their conference affiliation of the teams they represent.

This year’s All-Star game will be held in Los Angeles, CA in February. The All-Star teams will have a dramatically different look. LeBron James and Chris Paul could conceivably be on the same team although they play in different conferences, and Kyrie Irving and Stephen Curry could possibly play on the same team.

These teams will depend invariably on who has the top leading votes.

With the winning All-Star team scoring over 190 points in the past couple All Star games, credit should be given to the players, NBA Players Association and Commissioner for coming to consensus about these changes. According to Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today Sports, Chris Paul states, “I’m thrilled with what the players and the league have done to improve the All-Star Game, which has been a priority for all of us.” He continues on to say, “We’re looking forward to putting on an entertaining show in L.A.” Do you like these All-Star changes that the NBA has adopted? By Cam Buford Whatsgoodinsports.com As the Los Angeles Chargers embark on their first season to return back to L.A. since 1960, they now have plenty of competition to compete with for that entertainment dollar in the city. Although not much compares to the entertainment value the NFL brings to Los Angeles, there is so much more to look forward to in the sports arena. The ever-increasing movie industry and the various shows that are available, the music industry and the countless concert options, the beaches, the sunny weather. Along with the influx of other Los Angeles sports teams, the long-awaited return of the Los Angeles Rams now call Los Angeles home again.

Los Angeles has a long history of great sports teams to call it home. Namely the L.A. Lakers and L.A. Dodgers who had relocated from Minneapolis and Brooklyn respectively, both made their debut’s shortly after the Chargers left from Los Angeles for San Diego in 1960. Even the Los Angeles Clippers left San Diego for the entertainment rich Los Angeles market, meanwhile the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings have also joined the Los Angeles sporting world and eventually brought championship teams, thus adding more entertainment value to the sports fans in Los Angeles.

The Chargers will face some unique challenges as they “Fight for Los Angeles!” First and foremost, since the Rams returned to L.A. in 2016, the Chargers have some catching up to do in attempting to recapture NFL fans in this vast sports market.

They both are set to share a revolutionary new stadium, just east of LAX, which is on schedule to open in 2019. In the meantime, the Rams are playing at the historic L.A. Coliseum, which is able to host significantly more fans than the Stub Hub Center, which the Chargers will call home in the interim.

Growing the Charger fan base is critical to their development in the NFL market, regardless of the size of the stadium.

Although they anticipate many ardent fans will make the 100mile commute from San Diego, it is imperative that they take certain steps to grow their fan base in the Los Angeles market.

Being active and visible in the community is a sure way to develop their local L.A. fan base.

On the Chargers quest to ingratiate themselves in the communities while developing a solid fan base, they will be participating in many important local events this October in an effort to gain support and grow their fan base as well as making their presence known in the local community. Fans and potential fans alike should show their support and see what the Chargers will bring to the community. The “black-ish” episode is especially ambitious, starting with the animated segment in which The Roots and Blacc, who also guest stars as himself in the show, perform the song “I’m Just a Slave.”

There are also two original musical numbers produced by guest star Fonzworth Bentley ("Think Like a Man Too”). They feature dancers, singers and the full cast of the comedy headed by actors Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross.

One of them, “We Built This,” honors slaves’ uncompensated labor that contributed to the U.S. economy _ which, according to one scene involving an exchange between Anderson’s Dre and Blacc, totaled $300 billion unadjusted for inflation.

His goals for the episode, which per usual uses clever humor and punchlines to leaven serious themes, aren’t quite so stratospheric.

The intention is to “go out there and say something and try to be honest with it,” he said. “That’s all we want to do, is start a conversation.”

TV’s ‘Black-ish’ makes an issue of ‘Juneteenth’ LOS ANGELES (AP) - If Juneteenth fails to ring a bell, the season debut episode of ABC’s “black-ish” should fix that.

With animation, musical numbers and help from The Roots and Aloe Blacc, the sitcom delves into the holiday that marks June 19, 1865, the date on which a Union Army general ordered laggard Texas to put a stop to slavery in the months following the Civil War’s end.

In the daring manner in which “black-ish” has tackled the casual use of the N-word, police shootings and other thorny issues, Tuesday’s episode (9 p.m. EDT) uses the holiday as a pivot point to debate what America honors of its past and what it sidelines.

Series creator and executive producer Kenya Barris admits he initially brushed off a fellow “black-ish” writer’s suggestion that the show address Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day and first celebrated in 1866.

Then one of Barris’ six children _ who are a regular source of inspiration _ schooled him on a historical figure that gets no lack of attention, the 15th-century Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. “‘Dad, you know Columbus never set foot in North America?”’ Barris recalled the preteen saying. “I said, ‘I think you’re mistaken, son.’ Then I decided to look it up and found he was absolutely right.”

Barris’ research turned up more, including accusations from Columbus’ contemporaries that he brutalized and enslaved people on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and mistreated others he encountered on his expeditions to the new world.

“It made me start thinking, ‘Why can we celebrate this guy, but when someone says Juneteenth it’s a laughable thing?”’ Barris said.

Drink Thrown on Lakers’ Fans that Knelt for Anthem

BY KHARI NIXON massappeal.com Across the sports world, political tensions have intensified in the wake of Donald Trump’s criticism of resistant NFL and NBA stars. And now that the social activism movement ignited

by Colin Kaepernick has successfully swept the NFL (and the White House) up in its tail wind, attention has somewhat shifted to the NBA, which begins its season in less than a fortnight.

Though the nation’s premiere basketball league has a higher toleration for social activism than the NFL regarding its players and coaches, the fans don’t all align with that thinking.

Case in point: the two people that were attacked with a soft drink for kneeling during the anthem at a recent Lakers game.

The incident appeared to happen during the Lakers vs. Nuggets preseason game at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California on Wednesday. New York Daily News columnist Shaun King surfaced the footage on Friday, which he says was initially deleted by its boastful originator, who filmed herself throwing a soft drink onto two people

seated in the stands at the arena. “’Take a kneel for the land of the slaves,’” she wrote in the tweet, mockingly. “Disrespect the flag and our country and that’s how we’ll react.”

The footage is brief and somewhat blurry, but the two recipients of the soda shower didn’t appear to be actively kneeling, meaning they were likely sought out after the national anthem ceremony was already over. In another tweet of the video, shared nearly 1,000 times, someone claims to know the exact identities and Twitter handles of the two

women involved with the drink toss. Both Twitter handles link to now non-existent accounts.

It’s an isolated incident and certainly not indicative of an overall theme that the league needs to immediately worry about. But if the White House vs. Socially Aware Athletes narrative continues, more and more, fans will be encouraged to pick a side. This could, unfortunately, just be the beginning.

Black California Counts

By Charlene Muhammad California Black Media LOS ANGELES - New America Media, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and the Advancement Project California hosted a panel discussion at the Japanese Cultural Center on the stakes and risks of the 2020 Census, and why California counts.

The event was part a collaborative effort among statewide non-profit organizations convened to help educate policymakers and community leaders about the policies and government investments needed for a fair and accurate count in 2020, according to sponsors of the Oct. 6 gathering.

Decisions being made by Congress and the Trump Administration will determine whether planning and funding for the 2020 Census are sufficient for a fair and accurate count, but already, Trump’s 2018-2019 budget request was already woefully inadequate and unrealistic, the non-profit advocates charged in a Census and California fact sheet.

“Necessary testing has already been cut back due to lack of sufficient funds. The window for the administration and Congress to prevent a failed 2020 Census is narrowing quickly,” the

document indicated.

“California’s more than 2.5 million young children are especially at risk of being missed. Black and Hispanic children have the highest undercounts of any age group. Sixteen California cities rank in the top 100 places with the highest number and percent of children under the age of 5 living in hard-to-count census tracts,” the fact sheet continued.

Advocates have prioritized ensuring there is sufficient funding in the 2018-2019 budget for outreach efforts, and that a committee of trusted, experienced organizational leaders is established to ensure hard-to-count populations are reached. They are also working to provide local governments with similar populations participate in a program established by Congress to improve the accuracy of the census address lists.

“We are at risk of losing federal funding for programs and political representation in the House in the decade after 2020,” said Dr. John Dobard, manager of Political Voice, Advancement Project California, which advocates for policy and systems changes that foster upward mobility in communities most impacted by racial and economic injustice.

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer Arizona’s Khalil Tate and Iowa State’s Joel Lanning were Named Walter Camp National FBS Players of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN. The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the Football Bowl Subdivision National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.

Tate of Ingelwood and Serra HS came off the bench to replace starting QB Brandon Dawkins and rushed for 327 yards setting the FBS record for single-game rushing yards by a quarterback. His four scores included runs of 58, 28, 75 and 47 yards to lead the Wildcats to a 45-42 win over Colorado. In addition, he completed 11-of-12 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown.

The big game earned Tate a starting role this week against UCLA. “Its hard not to justify not starting him,” said Wildcat Head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Tate is the fifth Arizona player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, and the first since linebacker Scooby Wright (Nov. 30, 2014).

Redshirt Senior, Linebacker from Ankeny, Iowa recorded eight tackles, recorded his first career fumble recovery, and tallied one quarterback sack as Iowa State (3-2) defeated third-ranked Oklahoma, 3831. Lanning also played quarterback during the game and was pivotal in short yardage situations. He was 2-for-3 through the air, putting up 25 yards. He also carried the ball nine times, racking up 35 yards.

This is the 14th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season.

A threat to an accurate count in the Black community he’s served has been the ability to actually culturally identify Blacks in the state, particularly because of tremendous shifts out of Los Angeles to the Inland Valley of San Bernardino and Riverside County, and other areas, stated Reverend Samuel Casey, executive director, Congregations Organized for Prophetic Engagement.

Another challenge was apathy and getting Blacks to participate, especially when it came to the federal government’s promise of more resources, he said.

Even the question format proves problematic, he said. “In each one of these communities in the Inland Valley, one of the challenges I know there’s going to be is African Americans explicitly identifying as African Americans or Black,” Casey stated.

“There are those who are multi-racial, who would probably prefer to identify as Latino or as Asian, or some other ethnicity, rather than identify as Black, even though we’re familiar with the

“One-drop” rule within our nation. If you have one drop of African blood in your system, you are by definition African American and/or Black,” Casey continued.

It will be important to pay attention to the cultural relevance of materials presented, he urged.

Other presenters were Ditas Katague (Chair, U.S. Census Bureau’s National Advisory Committee on Race, Ethnicities and Other Populations), Ofelia Medina (Director of State Civic Engagement Policy with NALEO (National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials) Educational Fund’s Policy Research and Advocacy, Stewart Kwoh (Founding President and Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles), and Dr. Joely Proudfit (Director of California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center, California State University- San Marcos) concurred that distrust of the American government, whether federal, state, or local, would be a major hurdle in getting residents to participate in the count.

“The state quickly realized in 1990, we had a huge undercount of over 800,000 people here in California, and we lost billions of dollars, and we lost getting an additional congressional seat,” Katague stated.

After investing millions of its own money for outreach in 1999 and partnering with ethnic media, California outpaced the entire country by two percentage points in participation, according to Katague.

“California gained an additional congressional seat, which was great … but that was by just 18 people being counted,” she said. She is most worried about the Census Bureau putting funding toward ethnic media advertising campaigns, which have had huge impacts.
