Chicago Crusader staff report Chicago and Denver on Monday, November 19, joined many cities in America that have been plagued by mass shootings.

A Black doctor was among four people who died in a mass shooting at Mercy Hospital in Chicago’s predominately Black Bronzeville neighborhood. She was identified as Tamara E. O’Neal.

O’Neal died after she was allegedly gunned down in the parking lot by her former fiancée. The incident was the beginning of a deadly shooting rampage that killed Chicago Police Officer Samuel Jimenez, 28. But as the city prepares to give him a ceremonial sendoff, gun violence that has claimed so many Black lives remains a persistent problem that once again has placed Chicago in the national spotlight.

While many Black victims are portrayed in Chicago media as underachieving individuals with criminal backgrounds, O’Neal was a well-educated and accomplished professional who attended church frequently. However, most of the attention in Chicago’s media has been on Jimenez’s death.

In addition to the O’Neal and Jimenez, a hospital pharmaceutical assistant was fatally shot after exiting an elevator. The victim’s name is being withheld until the family has been contacted.

In the middle of it all is Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, a Black police veteran who grew up in the city’s notorious Cabrini Green Housing projects that was immortalized in the television sitcom “Good Times.”

Another product of Cabrini Green is Kim Foxx, a Black Cook County State’s Attorney, who’s under pressure to clean up the city’s justice system that for so long has been infested with crooked cops who have tortured, harassed and locked up many innocent Blacks. Some say Foxx has not done enough to reform the justice system despite her pledge to do so after voters ousted her predecessor, Anita Alvarez in 2016, following the Laquan McDonald scandal.

For the Black community, the fatal shooting of Jimenez is bittersweet as the police misconduct trial of three officers accused of covering up the shooting of the McDonald shooting starts next Monday, November 26th after the long Thanksgiving holiday.

Jimenez leaves behind a wife and four children.

Jimenez was hired on the force in February 2017. He had recently completed his probationary period.

The mass shooting occurred as Chicago was preparing for the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The shooting rekindled painful memories of Police Commander Paul Bauer who died earlier this year while trying to apprehend a shooter at the James R. Thompson Center in the West

“It’s been a tough day for the Chicago Police Department and the City of Chicago,” said Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson during an emotional press conference.

During the press conference, Johnson described how the shooting unfolded around three in the afternoon.

He said there was a domestic dispute in the parking lot at Mercy Hospital. A friend tried to intervene before the gunman shot a female doctor whom he was once engaged to marry.

Johnson said at some point, the “male lifted up his shirt and displayed a handgun,” Johnson said shots were then fired and the female doctor was left wounded on the ground.

Police came to the scene after a 911 call that alerted

them of the shooting. The gunman started firing at them while the police were still in their squad cars, police said.

The man ran into the hospital as he was chased by police.

“They engaged the offender for several minutes with gunshots being fired” by the offender and by police, Johnson said.

Jimenez was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The female doctor died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Police scoured the hospital for any other gunmen, and some patients were evacuated to warming buses that were parked along South King Drive on the east side of Mercy Hospital.

Shortly before 5 p.m., Mercy Hospital said it was no longer an active-shooter scene.

A second officer was struck in his gun holster but was not seriously injured.

The L.A. Clippers Foundation works to inspire children through the game of basketball and utilize its unique position to provide resources and opportunities that make a positive difference toward leveling the playing field for youth in Southern California. The L.A. Clippers Foundation recently provided food and personal care items to 1,000 families in need at the annual Feed the Community event, and holiday giving will continue over the next few months, headlined by the 13th annual Adopt A Family event on December 18.

Although neither player is from America or grew up with Thanksgiving, the spirit of giving back is a universal language and each of them has seamlessly grasped the holiday spirit. “Giving back is most important thing; Because it’s Thanksgiving!” Gallinari preaches. Marcin Gortat states, “It’s great to do more than just bounce the ball. It’s a great opportunity to show the love, the show us love for 42 games at home and we can show the back by giving away turkeys.”

Gallinari and Marcin Gortat, along with Clippers MVPs, teamed with Ralph’s and Food 4 Less associates to pass out the turkeys and trimmings to over 500 families.

Which Ralphs and Food 4 Less have donated food items for Teamwork at the Table for 11 years. The joy the players received passing out the food and gift bags were just as evident as the appreciation the recipients were to receive the gift bags and foods.

This is yet another impressive effort by the LA Clippers the share their fortunes within the community and builds their fans base. Program Set Up by 2 Arrested at Starbucks PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Philadelphia is looking for a non-profit group to help set up a program for young entrepreneurs, a key part of the city’s settlement with two black men who were arrested for sitting at a Starbucks without ordering anything.

Project Elevate was established by Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson and will operate in city high schools.

The men settled with the city in May for a symbolic $1 each and a promise from officials to set up a program for young entrepreneurs. The city announced Monday they will award a grant of $200,000 to a non-profit group to design a pilot phase of the program.

Video of their April arrest prompted a national outcry and led the CEO of Starbucks to personally apologize to the men. The company also changed store policies and closed shops across the country one afternoon for bias training.

Town Renounces Racist Past OCOEE, Fla. (AP) – A central Florida town where dozens of African-Americans were massacred and a black neighborhood was burned down almost 100 years ago is renouncing its racist past.

Ocoee city commissioners plan to issue a proclamation Tuesday acknowledging the 1920 attack on the black community in that caused African-Americans to move away for decades.

The proclamation renounces the city’s past as “a sundown town,’’ a place where African-Americans could be endangered if they were in city limits after sunset. The Orlando Sentinel reports the proclamation reads: “Let it be known that Ocoee shall no longer be known as a sundown city but the sunrise city with the bright light of harmony, justice and prosperity shining upon all our citizens.’’

George Oliver, who this year became the first AfricanAmerican elected to the Ocoee City Commission, said it’s time to let people know that Ocoee has evolved.

“If you were black, you didn’t want to go through here, day or night, but if you had to, you made sure if at all possible that you got out of town before the sun went down,’’ Oliver said. “That’s changed. It’s time we let people know.’’

In 1920, a white mob attacked Ocoee’s black community after African-Americans attempted to vote.

The mob surrounded the home of July Perry, set fire to Perry’s neighborhood and massacred dozens of black residents. The mob lynched Perry in nearby Orlando.

After the massacre, about 500 black residents fled Ocoee, leaving behind their homes and possessions.

Ocoee had no black residents until the 1980, according to the U.S. census.

African-Americans now make up about a fifth of the town’s 46,000 residents, and Hispanics represent under a quarter of the population, according to the census.

Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson accompanied a group of central Florida residents to the April opening of a national lynching memorial and museum in Montgomery, Alabama. He said the memorial moved him.

“It sends chills down your back,’’ Johnson said.

Perry’s 79-year-old granddaughter, Gladys Franks Bell, said she never thought she’d live to see official recognition of the tragic event by town officials. Her then-teenage father and his siblings escaped Ocoee by hiding in woods and swampy wetlands.

“None of my family has ever forgotten,’’ Bell said.

The historic home of John and Alice Coltrane/National Trust for Historic Preservation to reconstruct our national identity while inspiring a new generation of activists to advocate for diverse historic places, according to the announcement.

“We are proud of how over this past year we’ve helped to broaden the conversation about the places that matter,” Stephanie Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, said in a news release.

“Since the launch of the Action Fund, we have seen overwhelming support across the country in saving spaces that tell the full American story.”

Launched in partnership with national foundations, and with support from a National Advisory Council, including co-chairs Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation, and actress and director Phylicia Rashad, the Action Fund has changed the landscape of African American preservation.

In year one, the Action Fund empowered youth through a hands-on preservation experience, modeled innovative approaches to interpreting and preserving African American cultural heritage at historic sites, continued on-the-ground work protecting significant historic places, and launched a national grant program.

“The African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund has seen remarkable grassroots engagement, in the more than 800 grant applications asking for help protecting African American historic places, and in the tremendous community support at newly-launched National Treasures like the John and Alice Coltrane Home,” said Brent Leggs, director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.

“As we embark on year two of the Action Fund, we will continue working to foster a national landscape where every person can see themselves, their history, and their potential in our collective story,” Leggs said.

In this inaugural year, the Action Fund was able to award 16 grants, totaling more than $1M, to preservation organizations across the country, with funding going to support the preservation of sites and stories of black history.

The grants, presented at Essence Festival this July, covered work in communities from Birmingham to the South Side of Chicago, including sites of struggle and strength, according to the announcement.

“The Action Fund grant enabled us to move forward with the goal of transforming the August Wilson House into a community space, a hub of art, memory, and interpretation that will support young artists in Pittsburgh and across the country, and celebrate August Wilson’s legacy,” said Paul A. Ellis, Jr., Executive Director of the August Wilson House, an inaugural grant recipient.

“This house and this community are more than just a place where August lived – they are the inspiration for his plays, and the physical representation of what he was able to accomplish,” he said.

In addition to grant funding, the National Trust through its Action Fund has supported four new National Treasure designations, including the childhood home of singer Nina Simone, and Memphis-based Clayborn Temple, famed for its role in the Sanitation Workers’ Strike of 1968.

In the coming year, the National Trust has pledged to continue work on key preservation efforts, including conducting research exploring the impact that preservation has on contemporary urban issues that disproportionately affect communities of color – equity, displacement and affordability.

King’s death along with the murders of President John F. Kennedy and his brother, Sen. Robert Kennedy – both of whom were proponents of civil rights and equal opportunity for African Americans and other minorities – were reminders to many that America still had not come close to achieving the slain leader’s “Dream.”

What’s more, in 1976, author Alex Haley released his family’s autobiography, “Roots.”

It would not only go onto become a best-selling book, but a much-watched and talked about ABC Television mini-series that re-awakened everyone to the darkness, horrors and inhumanity of the transatlantic slave trade.

“Alex Haley tapped into something very special, the idea that black Americans have been, are, and will always be compelled to understand their history,” said Dr. Kellie Jackson, an assistant professor of Africana Studies at Wellesley University.

Jackson’s research focuses on slavery, abolitionists, violence as a political discourse, historical film, and black women’s history.

That “Roots” spawned an era where African Americans would give their newborn children African-themed names was no surprise and counts as an important moment in self-recognition, said Jackson, whose new book, “Force & Freedom: Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence,” examines the conditions that led some black abolitionists to believe slavery might only be abolished by violent force.

NAACP Urges Rejection of Farr

The nation just experienced national elections which are not yet over, and which were tainted by egregious voting rights violations. That Majority Leader McConnell chooses this moment in time to vote on a judicial nominee known as the vote-suppressor-inchief is not lost on anyone. It is a slap in the face to

communities of color everywhere.

Thomas Farr poses a serious threat to civil rights, especially since he would preside over a jurisdiction with a large African-American population. Even among dangerous Trump nominees, Farr stands out for his decades-long crusade to disenfranchise African Americans. He learned how to intimidate Black voters from segregationist Senator Jesse Helms and helped turn North Carolina into ground zero for voter suppression tactics. His nomination is a travesty. His confirmation would be heresy.

We believe the American people want tolerance and unity, rather than hate and divisiveness, and that applies to the federal courts, too. We urge each and every Senator to reject this judicial throwback to white supremacy and segregation. The people of North Carolina and our entire country deserve better than this.

What if Black Professional Athletes Respected Black Economic Empowerment?

By Harry C. Alford & Kay DeBow Oh, what a wonderful world this would be for Black communities throughout our nation. We, as a people, have over $1.3 trillion (T) in annual spending. However, our Black-owned businesses account for over $183 billion. Do you see the problem? We don’t recycle our money within our own communities. Not even 20 percent of what we have stays within our own business infrastructure. As Malcolm X once remarked, “The ‘eagle’ flies on Friday in Black communities and by noon Saturday it is one dead bird.” Nothing recycles and thus, nothing is going to build or grow larger. We are consumer slaves.

We live in a complex on the Virginia side of Washington, DC. A few of our neighbors are professional athletes. You can always tell when their crew is assembling.

The parking area out front suddenly looks like a Maybach or Lamborghini car dealership. There is a million dollars’ worth of depreciating assets right before our eyes. They think it is so cool. We think it is depressing. I guess it is their money and their business. However, if we look collectively there is an immense opportunity slipping right before our eyes The Black percentage of professional football players exceeds 70%. The National Basketball Association approaches 90% +. These gifted athletes control billions of dollars that could be directed to significant economic empowerment for the Black communities from which they come. Allow us to show you a few examples of what could be done.

Basketball arenas and football stadiums are being built around our nation on an ongoing basis. Right now, there is usually no Black participation included during the construction and design of these stadiums. Levi Stadium in California had only 1.4% participation. Imagine if the Players’ Associations for these two sports would put this on the negotiating table before the owners: Thirty percent of all construction performed on the next stadiums be done by Black-owned and -managed construction firms. That should include architecture and engineering followed by construction management and all prime and subcontracting, accounting, all legal services. The stadiums should be built in areas that will not gentrify Black neighborhoods and business communities. Thirty percent of all concessions, restaurants, etc. that are allowed within the stadiums and arenas must be Black owned. Black advertising and public relations firms should be included.

Levi Stadium brings up another matter. The NFL and NBA player associations seem to have a great affinity to construction unions. They assume that they are fair and equitable to Black labor. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Only 2% of Black-owned construction companies are union. Why? Because of the Jim Crow treatment by these construction unions. The time is overdue for these Black athletes to step up and do the only responsible thing they can do. Don’t tolerate racist construction unions. Hell no! to solidarity.

Additionally, where are these teams parking their money? Financial institutions and money management firms should have significant Black utilization. Significant

should equate to over 30%. No more scandals such as Merrill Lynch bilking NBA players with the encouragement of their upper management (a Black CEO).

The athletes must participate in the selection of the Super Bowl city. There should be a rating system which determines the likelihood of racially diverse people participating in the wealth that a Super Bowl brings. Which city will have the blackest vendors? Who is printing the jerseys, the T-shirts, the souvenir books? Who is advertising the Super Bowl? And may we suggest that teams look for Black owned hotels.

These team owners are asleep at the wheel of diversity and inclusivity. They must feel pressured to have desire for diversity. The pressure will come from the athletes. Just because these teams have been using select vendors for dozens of decades doesn’t mean they can’t change now. The sooner they do it the better off America will be.

The player associations should have formal Memorandums of Understanding with the top Black professional organizations such as Black architecture and engineering associations, Black contractors, banks, accounting associations, attorneys, realtors, etc. This Godgiven natural athletic ability that is blessed on our people must be used via wide distribution of its influence and effects. These MOU’s should be publicized with ongoing updates to ensure that it is not just “window dressing” but real deal economic empowerment.

Now this would change the world! After doing that correctly we could move to our entertainers who would only perform at venues that have documented proof of Black construction, architecture/engineering participation.

Again, God has blessed us with remarkable talent. Let’s leverage it. Oh, how badly we need a bigger share of that $1.3 trillion. We can’t think of a better way. Our destiny is in our own hands.

attempts to rename Kunta Kinte, ‘Toby,’ the name in popular culture and memory never stuck,” Jackson said.

“Kunta Kinte is only referred to by his African name.

I think this is a signal of the value African Americans place on names. In the 1970s and beyond, giving black children Afrocentric names provided not only a feeling of pride, but a sense of heritage in history.”

Jackson continued: “Naming children after great rulers such as Nzinga, Kenyatta, or Chaka still resonates with many black parents today. I know parents who have given their children the name Obama. Names that are also signposts to historical moments. What’s more powerful than your name?”

Still, those names come with a price because many agree that hate is as American as Apple Pie and baseball.

And, victims of such hate not only include the once enslaved African American, but America is a country where it once was illegal for all women to vote.

It’s also a country that not only devastated Native Americans, but today still prevents those living on reservations to cast a ballot despite the historic amount of bloodshed and despair brought upon that group.

“I believe America does owe Native Americans the chance to cast a ballot,” said Shawn Halifax, a cultural history interpretation coordinator at the MacLeod Plantation Museum in Charleston, South Carolina. “I understand that what the law is and what people who are attempting to exercise their rights are told the law is can be two different things,” Halifax said.

America has always had a system of discrimination and prejudice against all groups who were not identified as “White Anglo-Saxon” native, said Walter Palmer, the founder of the Walter D. Palmer Leadership Learning Partners Charter School in Philadelphia and current faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches urban studies and social policy and practice.

“Because historically American indigenous native’s language, culture, history, customs and way of life has been wiped out and they have been a ward of the government, they lost their personhood,” Palmer said of Native Americans.

“As American citizens, native indigenous people should be entitled to all the same privileges, rights and entitlements as all other American citizens,” he said.

Palmer said America has continued to try and hold onto slavery, but in more legal forms like hate groups and prisons.

“After the abolishment of slavery and the end of the reconstruction period, there was the rise of the Klu Klux Klan, which was a replacement of the slave patrols after this period,” Palmer said.

“America always used the prison system as a means of threat, intimidation and social control and this was later enlarged to use Chain Gangs and Jim Crow laws to further control the African Americans,” he said.

Palmer said “Roots” was built on the legacy of prior black historians over the past two hundred years, like Fredrick Douglas, William B. Dubois, Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey, G. Carter Woodson, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. “The connection that African Americans have had to the African Diaspora goes back to the “Back to Africa” movement of the early 19th century like the American Colonization Society American that was created in 1821,” Palmer said.

For the 20th Century, “Roots” proved a watershed

moment, Halifax said.

“I imagine it inspired an incredible number of people to seek to learn more about their family’s past, because they knew little about it or had not been listening carefully to the stories of their elders,” Halifax said.

“I think ‘Roots’ influenced some white Americans.

I think the movie helped place the notion in the minds of many whites that enslaved populations were families and communities that experienced pain and suffering, that experienced joy and wonder, that were founders and builders of this country. That they were more than property,” he said.

Halifax continued: “I think ‘Roots’ helped usher changes regarding the placement of African Americans within the context of our national history. Of course, this did not happen just because of ‘Roots.’

“In fact, I think ‘Roots’ was a crashing wave into America’s consciousness that had been pushed by a swell generated during the Civil Rights and Black Power movements that preceded it. Stories from America’s history were to be highlighted as “American History” for so long were decided by white male academics.

“I think ‘Roots’ helped send a message. Historians needed to be more inclusive in their storytelling. It was during the 70s and 80s that more inclusive social histories were being researched and pursued in academia and academia began to become more diversified.

“By the 90s museums and historic sites began recognizing that there is more to America’s story than just rich white guys, their families, and the wars they waged.

And equally important it was by then that people began demanding more of these stories. Unfortunately, following the crashing wave of Roots there has been a very slow seep into the American conscious as a whole.”

“I think evidence of its importance is in the fact that its remake was released the same year as the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture,” Halifax said.

“I suspect that was not an accident. We have a long way still to go. The study by the Southern Poverty Law Center on how Slavery is taught in American schools is damning.”

Halifax pointed out that it took 100 years for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture to open. To lesser fanfare and just before the opening of that museum on the National Mall, two other smaller museums opened within a few months of each other.

Both state that their purpose is to share the history of enslaved people and their descendants. Both are former slave labor camps, known euphemistically as plantations – the Whitney Plantation in Edgard, Louisiana and McLeod Plantation Historic Site in Charleston, South Carolina.

“As far as I know they are the only two former plantation sites who have rejected the white dominated narrative, to look at these sites as places of memory for those held captive and enslaved and for those whose families survived,” Halifax said.

“These two sites hold promise as places of healing where slavery, its legacy, and American racism can be examined. In the end, I think Roots has had an important and lasting impact.

Tobias Harris to Host Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway

The most recent example of this is in the turkey giveaway that was held courtesy of their leading scorer Tobias Harris.

Due to his generosity, local families will now be able to have a turkey dinner on their table for this Thanksgiving.

Over 250 families received turkeys from Tobias Harris, and his mentees from his Tobias Troops Mentorship program, at the Weingart YMCA Wellness & Aquatic Center in South Central Los Angeles last week. Having collaborated with Clippers’ Mentorship Assist Zone, the Tobias Troops program has been launched in Los Angeles this season. 30 members of the Tobias’ Troops program joined Harris in distributing the Turkeys to needy families at the YMCA. Tobias’ Troops has worked with various schools and community service agencies around the country to inspire youth. Before coming to California, Harris played in Connecticut, Florida, New York and Michigan and contributed to each of those communities where being there. Harris has also garnered several community awards over the course of his NBA career.

Thanksgiving means a lot to him because, “I’ve always been blessed to have food, conversation and interaction to be able to give these turkey’s away for them to do the same, it’s what it’s all about.” When asked about what it means to work with the young men from Tobias Troops Harris says, “it’s awesome that he gets to pour into them, just like someone was able to pour into my life!”

With the Clippers commitment to the city of Los Angeles and the message they want to send through the L.A. Clippers Foundation, this is the ideal type of player with the character to present this message. Though Tobias isn’t alone in his efforts, he is certainly making a positive with his activities in the community. Review: Amazing Grace

The documentary of Aretha’s live recording of the best-selling gospel album of all time

In Amazing Grace, Aretha is a conduit who channels a spirit from above into the hearts of those who listen. With the premiere and distribution of this film, she can do that for eternity.

By Dwight Brown NNPA News Wire Film Critic Back in the day, if you couldn’t get to church on Sunday to hear the pastor’s sermon, you’d put on Aretha Franklin’s Amazing Grace album, the best-selling gospel record of all time, and she would give you your spiritual fix. After a long delay, and its share of controversy, this uplifting documentary that preserved her live recording of that album is finding distribution. It’s as if Franklin is sending a message to us from the great beyond. Thank heaven.

With the best of intentions, director Sydney Pollack and his crew filmed the Queen of Soul as she performed over two days, January 2nd and 3rd, at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles in 1972.

The smooth transition from her live recording to the now historic double album culminated with a Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance. The making of the documentary traveled a much rougher road. Apparently, Pollack and his crew had problems syncing the sound. It was a challenge that didn’t get resolved until producer Alan Elliot bought the rights from Pollack in 2007.

Elliott then had two problems to solve. 1.) Fix the technical hitches and make a cohesive documentary. 2.)

Overcome Franklin’s resistance; she successfully sued to stop the distribution of the film in 2011 and 2015. After she passed away, her estate gave permission for the film to be released, and it premiered at the DOC NYC Film Festival in New York on Monday November 12, 2018. So, was it worth the wait?

The master of ceremonies at the recording session is the legendary Reverend James Cleveland, whose rich baritone is somewhere between the soulful tones of Barry White and Teddy Pendergrass. Cleveland introduces the lady of soul with such reverence that you’d think a queen was walking into his church. And she is. Says the reverend with great pride: “She can sing anything. ‘Three Blind

Mice.’ Anything.”

Behind his pulpit is The Southern California Community Choir, directed by Alexander Hamilton.

The singers have more enthusiasm than fans at a Beyoncé concert. On the side of the pulpit, Franklin’s band warms up: Guitar: Cornell Dupree. Organ: Kenny Luper. Percussion: Pancho Morales. Drums: Bernard Purdie Bass: Chuck Rainey. The audience is a mix of parishioners, music fans and some well-known guests: Clara Ward, Aretha’s father Reverend C.L. Franklin, along with Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones.

Franklin floats into the room with an aura befitting Cleopatra. At the piano or standing in front of a mic on the podium, she launches into classic and contemporary gospel songs that show her versatility and musicianship.

Her voice is at the peak of its powers. Clear. Piercing.

Emotional. Divine. She settles into a modern gospel song written and formerly sung by Marvin Gaye “Wholy Holy.”

Then “How I Got Over” rocks the church to its core. The gospel standard “Precious Memories” is so solemn it could bring tears to anyone’s eyes. Playfully she blends the Carol King song “You’ve Got A Friend” with the very traditional “Precious Lord (Take My Hand),” displaying an equal feel for pop and gospel stylings.

Easily the most dramatic performance from the two days of singing has got be her intense rendition of “Mary Don’t You Weep.” It’s a classic spiritual that dates back to the Civil War when it was sung by slaves as a coded message that said that times will get better, oppressors will get their due, persevere and resist. In lyrics that the overseers could not fully understand, the chorus goes: “(Soloist) Pharaoh’s army. (Choir) Pharaoh’s army. (Soloist) I know you know that story of how they got drowned in the sea one day, oh yeah. (Choir) Drown in the Red Sea.” Franklin caresses the melody and draws extra meaning out of every word of a song that became popular again during the ‘60s civil rights movement.

There’s more on view than just a memorable performance by one of America’s most famous vocalists.

Also on exhibit is a musical form that has been an integral part of the black community since Africans first arrived in America. What audiences witness, through song and on display, is a rich resilient culture that has an undeniable affinity with music. Also, the love on view in this house of worship in Watts is not unique. It plays out on Sundays in black churches all over the country. It’s a continuous affirmation of customs. A spiritual calling. A communion with neighbors. And a front row seat to the evolution of black gospel music that started in fields and has grown into a very sophisticated art form with choirs, instruments and

amplification. Spirituals have come a long way.

Kudos to Alan Elliott for managing and bringing to fruition a creative process that has stymied others for years. He does his best, considering some of the original footage is out of focus. Editor Jeff Buchanan magically weaves together the performances, anecdotes and crowd scenes into a very tight and enthralling 87 minutes. The sumptuous sound is courtesy of the Grammy-winning producer/engineer Jimmy Douglass who handles music mixing duties for this doc and also worked on previous Aretha albums like Spirit in the Dark and Young, Gifted and Black. The pacing and sound of this documentary is extraordinary, especially when you consider that soundsyncing was the foil that caused the film’s 46-year delay.

Additionally, “Black Mexicans/La Negrada,” counts as the first Mexican feature film about the Afro-Mexican community and was filmed entirely with individuals from different towns around the Costa Chica in Oaxaca.

A women of color filmmaker competition will also take place and feature the panel discussion and the screening of, “No Shade,” which explores the hardships of the modern dating world through the dysmorphic presence of colorism as well as the fetishization of black women in a way that

organizers say is tactful and honest.

Jade is both effervescent and relatable as a 28-year old single woman of dark complexion who just “can’t seem to get it right,” let alone liberate herself from her unrequited love for the repressive and colorist Danny.

The world through her eyes is both a quirky and tumultuous obstacle course of courtship catastrophes and heart-gripping silences. Despite Jade’s line up of Tinder

Pastors are the noted spiritual guides in churches.

What this documentary makes clear is that gospel singers have an equal influence. They bring hope, a sense of empowerment, soul cleansing and sacred massages. In fact, after church, quite often it is the singer’s words and tunes that linger long after the reverend’s sermon has been forgotten.

In Amazing Grace, Aretha is a conduit who channels a spirit from above into the hearts of those who listen. With the premiere and distribution of this film, she can do that for eternity.

At some point in this thoroughly compelling doc, Franklin prophetically sings: “… I’m climbing, Higher mountains, Higher mountains, Trying to get home…”

African Diaspora Film Fest “Who is Black in America?”

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent The 26th annual installment of the African Diaspora International Film Festival promises to tackle the topic: “Who is Black in America?”

The popular festival, which showcases black filmmakers, actors, directors and producers all over the world, runs from Friday, Nov. 23 to Sunday, Dec. 9, at venues that include Teachers College at Columbia University, the Cinema Village, MIST Harlem, the Dwyer Cultural Center, and the Riverside Theater.

“There’s a lot new this year,” said Reinaldo BarrosoSpech, an educator in foreign languages and Black literature who created the festival with his wife, Diarah N’Daw-Spech, a financial consultant and university budget manager.

An opening night panel discussion and reception will focus on “Who is Black in America.” Panelists, who include director Marisol Gomez and poet Yvette Modestin, plan to dissect whether the film “Black Panther” has contributed to a better understanding of the Black experience and they’ll also explore what steps are needed to improve understanding, acceptance and acknowledgment of the diversity of the Black experiences in America.

The festival will also host screenings like Gomez’s “Angelica,” which deals with racism in Puerto Rico.

The film depicts Angelica, who has spent her whole life escaping from her mixed racial identity, but a family crisis forces her to return to Puerto Rico and rethink her life.

Festival-goers will also have an opportunity to watch “Scattered Africa: Faces and Voices of the African Diaspora,” “Sons of Benkos,” and “Cimarronaje en Panama,” documentaries that examine the contributions of Africans and their descendants to the wealth and power of the Americas and portrays elements of African culture that characterize everyday life throughout North America today.

“Scattered Africa” is based on director and anthropologist Sheila Walker’s experiences of discovering the origins of her own African American culture in Africa and her relationships with other Afro-descendant cultures in the Americas, including her individuals who were her teachers and cultural guides.

Directed by Silva Lucas, the “Sons of Benkos” counts as an entertaining documentary that explores the African culture of Colombia through music while “Cimarronaje en Panama” director Toshi Sakai expolores a time where two centuries before George Washington or Simon Bolivar dreamed of liberation from European tyranny, enslaved Africans in Panama fought for and gained their independence.

Finding refuge in the vast forests, they reclaimed their lives and formed free African communities throughout the isthmus.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs made his first public statements Sunday since the loss of Kim Porter, his longtime former girlfriend and mother of three of his children, saying they were “more than best friends” and “more than soul mates.”

Porter, a former model and actress, died unexpectedly at her Los Angeles home on Thursday at age 47. Authorities haven’t given a cause.

Combs had been silent until Sunday, when he sent a pair of tweets about Porter’s death.

“For the last three days I’ve been trying to wake up out of this nightmare,” Combs said in a tweet that included a video of him cuddling up to a pregnant Porter. “But I haven’t. I don’t know what I’m going to do without you baby. I miss you so much. Today I’m going to pay tribute to you, I’m going to try and find the words to explain our unexplainable relationship.”

In another tweet Combs said, “We were more than best friends, we were more than soul mates. ... And I miss you so much. Super Black Love.”

Porter and Combs were together with occasional breaks from 1994 until 2007. Together they have a 20-yearold son, Christian, and 11-year-old twin daughters, D’Lila Star and Jessie James. Combs also has three children from other relationships.

Porter also has a 27-year-old son, Quincy Brown, from a previous relationship, who was largely raised with Combs. Brown, an actor, appears on the Fox TV series “Star.”

Paramedics rushed to Porter’s house Thursday morning after calls saying she was unresponsive. She was declared dead soon after they arrived.

I only know him as a boxer, so I don’t really have an opinion on him. He’s in my way and that’s all I’m focusing on at the moment. I’m not going to hold no hard feelings. It’s just a sport.”

In reference to how he thought the fight would go Fury mentioned, “Deontay needs to land the right punch to detonate me, and I need to not let him do that!” “I’ve got to do whatever I can, not to let him hit me with that big right hand; clean time and time again. But he’s got to worry about getting out of the way of all my punches as well.” “The fans got nothing to lose in this fight. Me and Wilder are the only ones who’s got something to lose, in this fight.” “Someone’s 0 has got to go!”

Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, oddly enough both are alumni of ShoBox. Additionally, they are among the 78 ShoBox fighters who have gone on to win world titles.

This Heavyweight Championship fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury is sure not disappoint boxing fans.

Deontay Wilder comes into this blockbuster matchup as the WBC Heavyweight World Champion. Bruins Out-Duel Trojans in Cross Town Showdown

By Earl Heath Contributing Sports Writer It’s been a tough year for the UCLA football under new head coach Chip Kelly.

They began the season 0-5 and had so many injuries they began to look like a M.A.S.H unit. However, this past weekend a lot of bitterness went away as they defeated their cross town rival for the first time in four years 34-27.

Freshman JT Daniels connected on 20 of 34 passes for 337 yards and 2 scores. Michael Pittman caught 7 of them for 106 yards and Amon St. Brown had six catches for 98 yards.

Trailing 27-21 headed to the fourth quarter UCLA (3-8, 3-5 PAC 12) rose to the occasion on both sides of the ball.

Senior QB Wilton Speight completed 13 of 22 passes for 166 yards and Theo Howard was on the receiving end of 5 of them for 76 yards. Tight End Caleb Wilson had 5 receptions for 63 yards.

UC Davis Transfer Joshua Kelley continued his running ways exploding on a 55 yard run that helped the Bruins win the quarter 13-0. It was part of a season long 97 yard drive.

When USC got the ball sophomore Darnay Holmes

picked off Trojan quarterback JT Daniels and that led to a field goal for the Bruins. Bakersfield’s Krys Barnes help stymie USC (5-6, 4-5 PAC12). In the fourth he made big plays stopping USC on a 4th and 3 near the end of the game. Barnes had a big day leading the defense with 11 tackles.

However, the story of the game was Kelley who had 389 yards on the ground moving him into third place on the all-time single game list behind Maurice Jones-Drew (322 yards) vs. Washington in 2004 and Deshaun Foster (301 yards) also against Washington in 2001.

His forty carries were a record. “Forty” said Kelley, “I will have to use the ice bucket tonight for sure.”

The forty carries also got the attention of Head Coach Chip Kelly. “I wish he could have carried it a 100 times.” It was the seventh straight game he had a rushing touchdown.

That’s the longest since Skip Hicks 14 games since 19961997.

Cornelius accounted for 444 yards of offense (338 passing,106 rushing) and six touchdowns (including five passing and 1 rushing).

The red-shirt senior from Bushland, Texas completed 30 of 46 passes helping the Cowboys improve to 6-5 (3-5 Big-12) .

By Cameron Buford Whatsgoodinsports.com With all that has gone on here in the Southland, this Monday Night Football game between the Chiefs vs Rams was reassigned the Los Angeles Coliseum came as a reward to the families and the first responders of the tragic events which have impacted so many here in Southern California.

The first responders of the shootings Borderline Bar and Grille and raging Wosley fires that has impacted so many.

The Rams made it a point to recognize those supporting groups or our communities Oddly enough, this was the first Rams Monday Night Football game to be hosted at the Coliseum since, November 19, 1979. The Rams made it a point to honor several victim’s families, volunteers, community members and first responders of the unfortunate shootings and raging fires that have recently affected the Southern California community.

These tributes carried on through the evening, though they started out with members of Cal Lutheran Choir will perform the National Anthem; Family of Fallen Ventura County Sheriff Sergeant to Light the Torch and the coin toss will feature Mayors of the Greater Los Angeles Region.

Karen and Jordan Helus, wife and son of fallen Ventura County Sheriff Sergeant Ron Helus, will light the Coliseum Torch prior to kickoff. Helus was among the first law enforcement officers to arrive at the Borderline Bar & Grill on the night of November 7. This courageous San Fernando native’s actions saved many lives that night facilitated the safe escape of several people. He will be remembered as someone who served his community with unwavering honor.

Cal Lutheran alumnus and former choir member Justin Meek, one of the 12 victims of the Borderline Bar & Grill shootings. Therefore, members of the Cal Lutheran University Choir will sing the National Anthem, joined on-field by 200 first responders from the greater Los Angeles region.

The Rams will salute two heroes during Monday’s game. During the first quarter, the Rams will recognize Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) Captain & Army Reserves Staff Sergeant Ken Roberts. During the third quarter, Firefighter Michael Williams of Ventura County Fire Station 36 in Oak Park will be honored.

Dylan and Derek Adler, the sons of Sean Adler, who lost his life in the shooting at Borderline, will serve as the Rams honorary water boys of the game.

During the game players and coaches from both the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs wore hats honoring a variety of Los Angeles area fire and law enforcement agencies. The hats recognize the following agencies: California Highway Patrol, LAFD, LAPD, LA County Fire Department, Ventura County Fire Department, and Ventura County Sheriff.

These New Era produced hats will have the agency’s logo on the front of the cap, with either team’s logo on the side. The hats will be auctioned off on NFLAuction.com postgame with 100% of the proceeds going to the Conejo Valley Victims Fund and American Red Cross Southern California Wildfire Relief. In addition, game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off on NFL Auction with proceeds going to the relief efforts.

Both high powered offenses came into this game with a 9-1 record and it wasn’t farfetched to understand the scorekeeper was going to be busy. It is very likely that we

could see these same teams meet in Atlanta in February to decide the Championship of the NFL. Along with the players to execute their plan, Kansas City Head Coach and Andy Reid had their offenses primed for a big-time performance.

The Rams scored the first 2 Touchdowns, the Chiefs used a forced fumble to get them the lead in the second quarter, then Aaron Donald responded with a strip fumble of his own. The game was tied going into halftime with both quarterbacks boasting a QB rating of 123.5 out of 153.0. Mahomes had thrown for 3 touchdowns and Goff has thrown for 2 touchdowns to that point.

Another Aaron Donald strip fumble and an interception that was run back for a touchdown gave the Rams a 10-point lead at the 3rd quarter closed. The Chiefs fought back to take the lead before ultimately throwing an interception to Marcus Peters. That ended a valiant comeback in one of the most exciting games many fans and players have been a part of.

In this football game, we saw these two teams combined to score 14 touchdowns and 105 total points, which were the highest points to be scored on MNF and the third highest point total in any NFL game. The Chiefs and the Rams also combined for over 1000 total yards in this game. The Chiefs were the first to score 50 points in a loss and Patrick Mahomes’ 6 touchdown passes were the most thrown for on Monday Night. Another thing that made this game so exciting, regardless of who you were rooting for, was that there were 4 lead changes in the 4th quarter.

I asked Patrick Mahomes what he learned in tonight’s game, “Yeah, I mean it’s the same as when we played New England. I mean it’s just - you can’t make mistakes against great teams and when you play these games you know, these are the games you’re going to play hopefully in the playoffs and so you want to make sure that you limit your mistakes and that still at the same time be aggressive and still score points.”

Chiefs Linebacker Justin Houston said when asked about they showed their fans tonight, “I think we showed a lot of heart. We took several punches. Everybody’s got a game plan until you get hit in the mouth. We got hit in the mouth several times, but for us to keep fighting as a whole, I think that shows what type of team we are and how much heart we have.”

Rams Wide Receiver Robert Woods said when asked about executing on that game-winning drive, “Just driving the ball. We knew it was going to be similar to this. Just try to come out and execute and move the ball. I think we did that continuously. I think it came down to just being a ballplayer. I think Jared saw that look. Saw that it was double coverage inside and one-on-one with Gerald Everett outside, gave him a beautiful ball, and a playmaker toe tapping the sideline and finished the game.”

This was a fantastic game to be at, watch and enjoy. We saw big plays on offense and defense, we saw lead changes along with record-breaking performances. At 10-1 I expect the rams to get even better after this win and I believe the same for the Chiefs. In the true spirit of Thanksgiving, this is a time not to focus on one big meal on one big day. This is a time to commit and work even harder to end poverty and hunger in this land of plenty.

By Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. In the bloody summer of 1863, the Union Army defeated General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces at Gettysburg, a three-day battle that changed the course of the Civil War and the long journey from slavery to freedom.

Three months later, in a profound gesture of gratitude, President Abraham Lincoln officially proclaimed the fourth Thursday of November to be a national holiday, a national day of thanksgiving.

The Union would hold. The people would be free.

“No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things,” the proclamation read. “They are gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.”

Thanksgiving has always been about more than football and turkey. It is about justice and the creation of a more perfect union. It has always been political.

Poverty and hunger are enemies of the union. They are homegrown terrorists, traitors to the America we can and must become. They have no place in a nation as rich, powerful and fundamentally good as ours.

In the true spirit of Thanksgiving, this is a time not to focus on one big meal on one big day. This is a time to commit and work even harder to end poverty and hunger in this land of plenty.

We have much work to do. There are nine neighborhoods in Chicago – endangered communities – where poverty is at almost 20 percent and unemployment hovers around 40 percent.

That is a sin.

There are an estimated 13.1 million children – 1 in 6 – in the U.S. living in households where there is not enough to eat. Experts say that children who suffer from hunger in the first years of their education often lag behind their peers in school, a beginning that can haunt them for the rest of their lives.

The moral burden of Thanksgiving is not to eat turkey but to feed justice.

Held during the Great American Smokeout 2018 at the Hot and Cool Café in Leimert Park, the contest showcased poets, writers, and rappers performing their original pieces linking tobacco and social injustice.

“Art without a purpose is useless, so having a contest that has to do with cigarettes and linking that to social injustice and medical apartheid is a great way to share the information with our community,” said Nehanda. “My poem is a call to action for Black people to encourage them to transform our community.”

Research shows that African Americans and residents in low income communities are one of the main target groups of menthol cigarette advertising. A report from the American Cancer Society states that smoking-related illnesses are the number one cause of death in the AfricanAmerican community, surpassing all other causes of death, including AIDS, homicide, diabetes, and accidents. By 2020, the African American population will have suffered more than 4,700 excess deaths due to menthol in cigarettes says the Food and Drug Administration’s Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee.

“The Great American Smokeout has provided an opportunity for individuals, community groups, businesses, health care providers, and others to encourage people to use the date to make a plan to quit. Now, we are working to get the collective energy of our poets and artists into the movement,” said Ernesta Wright, executive director of the G.R.E.E.N. Initiative.

The event was hosted by the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC), The LOOP, The G.R.E.E.N. Foundation, Prevention Institute, the Hot and Cool Café, Aromas Stories, Abrafi Sanyika, and Heart of Yemalla, LLC and was designed to increase awareness of the tobacco industry’s negative effects on the African American community. The first, second, and third place winners received a cash prize ranging from $300 to $100.

The winners were selected by a panel of judges including poet Denise Lyles-Cook and radio personality Mother Love. Contestants were evaluated for their originality, educational content, and delivery.
